(00:54):

Ye, yes it is, andI want to disclose to you that you've

(01:18):

this hour of the Doctor Bob MartinShow. I'm Doctor Bob and my encouragement
to you is to become for youto become your own best doctor. Most
of the time, that's my goalbecause when you do, when you take
more charge of your health and responsibilityfor it, you're going to be better

(01:42):
off in general with your most preciouspossession, your health. All Right,
we're going to begin this hour talkingabout belly buttons are navels. What your
belly button reveals about your health Alittle bit different type of topic. Most

(02:04):
of us probably don't give our bellybutton a second thought. However, that
little skinfold could be a host forinfections, cysts, and even hernias that
you are completely unaware of. That'swhat experts are suggesting. Doctor Dan Bombguart,
a neuroscientist and physiologist at the Universityof Bristol, points out that the

(02:32):
belly button, known medically as thenavel, has more depth to it than
just a few millimeters. The bellybutton is a remnant of the umbilical cord,
which connects of fetus to its motherduring pregnancy, and there are many

(02:53):
variations, but the two main groupsof belly buttons, as many of you
know, are either oudies a bulgingbelly button you've seen them, or innies
where the belly buttons go way deepand some not so deep. Roughly ten

(03:15):
percent of people around the world haveaudies outi belly buttons, meaning their belly
button is protruding well. The remainderabout ninety percent of people have innies.
What is yours? I'll tell youI have an inny. I have a
slight innie. And the more itgoes in usually the fatter your abdomen is,

(03:38):
or the more adipacity you have.So you want to keep that abdomen
nice and tight and firm. Youwant that six pack or twelve pack or
whatever, and you'll you'll have lessof an inny. While the belly button
has no function after birth, subtlechanges to the way it appears could be

(04:03):
an indicator that something is wrong withyour health. One of these indications,
according to doctor Bombguard Notes, isan umbilical hernia, which occurs when part
of the intestines bulge through the bellybutton, literally through the abdominal wall because

(04:26):
there's a tear there. This causeis swelling or a bulge coming out of
the navel and that's why we shouldconstantly surveil our bodies, because when you
don't, and let's say you havethe beginnings of a umbilical hernia on the
side of that belly button, andit just keeps tearing and tearing and tearing

(04:50):
and gets bigger and bigger and bigger. By the time that abdominal wall gets
so torn, it may be requiredto have some type of a surgical intervention.
You don't want that. And maybeit was the sit ups doing them
incorrectly, or the abdominal crunches thatyou were doing down at the gym,

(05:14):
or something else you were doing inyour abdomen to try to reduce that sugar
goiter that's hanging out there that's exacerbatingor tearing at this abdominal wall that actually
caused it, and you may haveto modify your behavior. And that's why
it's important to constantly check yourself out. Now. These are usually harmless,

(05:40):
these tiny little umbilical tears or hernias, mainly affecting infants, though they are
also the second most common hernia inadults. Being overweight or having multiple pregnancies
can also increase the risk of adultdeveloping these umbilical hernias, primarily due to

(06:03):
strain and just bulging, excess pressurein the area, and weakness within the
walls of the abdominal area. Mostof the time, no treatment is necessary,
though the hernia may need to besurgically removed if it causes pain or
blocks the intestine, because it cansqueeze the intestine and cause that intestine to

(06:28):
die. That's a surgical emergency.You don't want that. You definitely don't
want that. Most people are moreworried about them from a cosmetic standpoint,
though. Doctor Baumgart also pointed outand pointed to a rare complication called Sister
Mary Joseph's nodule, which is namedafter a nun who discovered that many patients

(06:53):
with late stage cancer had swelling ora nodule near their belly button. This
can be a sign that a patient'scancer has spread or become more advanced.
Called Sister Mary Joseph's nodule, Wownamed it after the nun. That's interesting.

(07:15):
It's not seen as common these dayssince more cancers are now diagnosed earlier
before extensive spreading occurs. Another unusualcondition to catapult this condition is called Medusa's
head, also called a palm treesign. This is a network of painless

(07:42):
swollen veins around the belly button. So look in the mirror if you can't
see it from above, look inthe mirror and see if you can see
any kind of blood vessels or veinspopping out or in and around that area
that you didn't notice before, orhave somebody look at it for you,
and you're looking for like a sortof like a black or blue bruising effect

(08:07):
in and around the belly button. This is caused by portal hypertension portal hypertension,
which is high blood pressure in theportal vein. The portal vein carried
blood carries blood from the liver fromthe intestines, gall bladder, pancreas,
and spleen. The liver then processesnutrients in the blood and sends it to

(08:33):
the heart and Medusa's head. That'swhat it's called the condition. Medusa's head
on its own is not a disease, though it is thought that it's usually
a sign of some type of liverscarring, also referred to as cirrhosis of
the liver, so that can causewhat is referred to as Medusa's head or

(08:56):
also called a palm tree sign anetwork of painless, swollen veins around your
belly button. You could see blackand blue in that area, so check
it out. Now, the scarringmakes it harder for the blood to flow
through the veins through the livers veins, causing a build up in the portal
vein and flow to nearby veins nearthe belly button. Now this enlarges the

(09:22):
blood vessels into a Medusa like pattern. The belly button can also harbor infections,
especially if you have in any typestyle of belly button. This fold
can trap moisture, can trap debris. Many of you are also constantly digging

(09:43):
lint out of that area, andsome people dig this gross looking cheese out
of there. In warm environments,it's just prime area for bacteria to grow
in and any type of a bellybutton, so it's a good, good
idea to keep an eye on that. Sometimes it's so bad, I'm not

(10:05):
kidding you that some people will gointo an emergency room and they go,
yeah, I've got pain in mybelly button, and the smell coming out
of the belly button where that infectionis just about knocks over the emergency people
in the emergency room who we're tryingto check it out. They get to
get their mask on and hope forthe best. Signs of an infection in
the belly button include redness, pain, swelling, foul smell, and puss

(10:28):
and other fluids leaking out. Youdon't want any of that for sure,
so pay attention to your belly button. Check it out as you would check
out anything about your body, sothat if there is a problem, you
can report it to your health careprovider and or take care of it yourself.
All right, more news and interestinghealth related information. When we come

the words I'm not seeing as wellas I used to, or I think
I need stronger glasses. If youare nearing or past age forty, it's

program by simply jotting down the callletters of the radio station you're listening to,

(14:50):
the frequency on the dial, whetherit's an m R FM station,
the time of the day, andpass it on to as many people as
you can so they too can tunein and learn more about their most precious
possession, their health. All right, now, we're going to turn to
another topic, and that is horrifyingside effects of drug taken by forty five

(15:15):
million Americans. We became asexual aftertaking antidepressant drugs for a few weeks.
Now, our genitals have shrunk, and we're worried about we'll never have sex
again. Patients left sexless, joyless, and infertile after taking antidepressants are speaking

(15:41):
out, ladies and gentlemen about whatthey are calling a silent health crisis.
So many people are taking antidepressant drugs. I don't know if you've noticed this
or not. These drugs have beenaround for a long long time. The

(16:03):
first selects serotonin reuptake inhibitor drug SSRIdrug for short, Prozac, was approved
by the US Food and Drug AdministrationFDA in nineteen eighty seven and was introduced

(16:26):
into the United States in nineteen eightyeight. Well, investigative reporters heard from
many people across the United States,Canada, and Europe about the devastating symptoms
they claim have persisted years after theystopped taking common prescribed antidepressant drugs known as

(16:51):
select serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs or SSRIdrugs. And we're talking about some of
the most popular drugs that are usedin the antidepressant category, drugs that include
Prozac, packsil, Louvax, Selexa, Lexapro, and Zoloff. Now,

(17:15):
you may not be on one ofthese drugs maybe you are, but I'll
bet somebody you know is on oneof these drugs and they may be suffering
in silence in terms of having thesehorrifying side effects. These drugs are taken
by forty five million Americans on aregular basis. And here's another person weighing

(17:37):
in on it. Maxwell age twentyfour, from Ohio, said he has
been robbed of his vitality and confidencesince he came off Prozac that his doctor
prescribed as an antidepressant, one ofthe most popular of the SSRI family,
two years ago he got off ofit. He has struggled to get and

(18:02):
maintain an erection and is completely indifferenttowards sex now, which has made it
hard to hold down a stable romanticrelationship for him. Or here's another person
talking about it, reporting it toinvestigative reporters. Lexi Leos, twenty six,
from the District of Columbia, claimedthat taking Prozac for just a few

(18:26):
days caused her genitals to shrink, and they've still not returned to normal for
years years later. She fears shewill never be able to share an intimate
relationship with someone again as a resultof taking this antidepressant, one of the
more popular ones called prozac. Now. Their shrinking accounts come on the heels

(18:52):
of a lawsuit filed by doctors againstthe FDA, the Food and Drug Administration,
accusing the FDA the agency of failingto adequately warn patients of sexual side
effects that can last long after theystop taking the drugs. And that's part

(19:12):
of the problem. I mean, when somebody goes to a doctor's, Oh,
doctor, I'm just having so muchtrouble in my life. I'm sad,
I'm blue, life's a beach,I can't get ahead. I've got
that. Oh I'm good up.I can fix you up. Sounds like
you're depressed. You have all theclassic signs of depression. I've got this

(19:34):
wonderful drug that will solve it foryou. You down for that, and
the patient says, doc ya anything, and then they prescribe the drug.
But the question becomes, they haven'tsolved their problem by taking the drug.
How does that solve the problems thatcreated the depression in the first place,

(19:55):
or the anxiety? How does thatsolve it? Because when that drug wears
offer, when the day you decideto stop it, that problem is going
to come back because you haven't solvedit. And I'm not saying to stop
your drugs here. Do not believethat I'm telling you to stop an antidepressant
drug. If you happen to beon one, that is something you'll have
to take up with your doctor oryour pharmacist. Now, the FDA has

(20:18):
mandated for decades that SSRI makers includea label warning telling users they may cause
the drugs that is, may causeerect out as function, low libido,
vaginal dryness, and trouble orgasmin We'retalking about the drugs SSRI drugs, selective

(20:40):
serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs like Prozac andzoloft, Paxel, selects, lexapro,
all of those drugs, and peopledon't even consider that that could be the
problem. If they say, well, shoot, if it takes scare of
them, my depression, all everythinggets better. No, it's it's a
risk. The average drug, ladiesand gentlemen, the average drug has seventy

(21:03):
five or seventy or seventy five differentpotential adverse side effects. Now, doesn't
affect everybody this way, No,but you never know who's going to be
and you never think about that whenyou take the drug because you're trusting your
doctor. You're believing in the doctorsdoing the right thing on your behalf.
And that could be true or nottrue. But thousands of former patients say

(21:30):
the symptoms persist long after the useof these drugs, and according to a
lawsuit, the FDA dragged its feetin addressing their petition to attach warnings to
antidepressants about permanent zapped libido and fertilityissues. One of the people said,
I've been chemically castrated, quoting them, I've been chemically castrated. Anxiety patient

(21:56):
thirty three years of age warns menagainst ssripills that stripped his hyper sexual libido
and made him suicidal. Post meaningafter SSRI Sexual dysfunction or PSSD has been
acknowledged by the Canadian government and theEuropean Medical Agency since twenty eighteen. The

(22:22):
impact of these drugs are profound. They can affect your physical health and your
mental health and your emotional well being. It is difficult to overstate how demoralizing
it is for some of these patientsto live with these conditions that they figure,
well, okay, I've got youknow, I've got the condition as

(22:45):
a result of the drug. I'lljust stop it and the problem will go
away. No, many of them, it just persists because it's messed up
their whole serotonin and their brain chemistrysomehow. And so this is one of
those issues with buyer beware. Buyerbeware. You've got to do that.

(23:10):
You've got to be careful and understandthis, and there are some options.
There are options that you may wantto consider when it comes to, you
know, feeling blue, feeling down, feeling depressed, feeling like things just
aren't going your way. Besides believingthat there's a pharmaceutical answer. If you

(23:32):
want to take pharmaceuticals, that's yourchoice. You have that choice, but
you also have the choice to rejectit and look for other healthier, safer
options long term, which I willtalk about after this short break. So
stay right where you are and wewill finish up on this when we come

(23:52):

(28:26):
dot com, spell out the worddoctor doctor Bob dot com. Now,
I've been talking about this problem withthese horrible side effects that the drugs in
the class of ssr I drugs selectserotonin reuptakeing hibitor drugs also referred to as

(28:52):
ssr I drugs for short, talkingabout Prozac and Zoloff and lexapro and all
of those rus how they are creatingproblems. The FDA is being sued now
for not putting proper labeling on thesedrugs because so many of the users have
come back and had problems even afterthey stop taking the drugs. And again

(29:15):
I want to point out. I'mnot telling you to stop drugs. That's
what I do. This is somethingyou have to do with your doctor's guidance
or with a pharmacist guidance. I'mjust warning you about this. People get
caught off guard because they get onthese drugs and they trust their doctors,
and they believe in their doctors,so they think, oh, you know,
no problem, it must be safe. Gosh, my doctor's recommending it.

(29:36):
But these serotonin drugs can impact yourhormone levels, including your estrogen,
your testosterone, which are connected toall kinds of parts of your body,
and estimated fifty eight to seventy percentof antidepressant users experience some form of sexual

(30:00):
side effect, such as low libido. Here's another person, twenty six years
of age, stopped taking prozac afterjust three days of taking it. She
said, and I quote the firstthing that I really noticed after taking it.
It's just like where your gentle whereyour genitals kind of shrink to one

(30:23):
degree or another. Her saying this, she added that while she still may
feel attracted to a member of theopposite sex, the sexual urge do not
appear as a result of taking thisclass of drugs. It's not on the
label. Doctors aren't worrying about this. FDA's being sued over it. It
comes as doctors are doling out prescriptionsfor depression medications at rates never seen before.

(30:51):
At least six point five million teenagersand at least thirty eight million adults
have a prescription for an antidepressant inthe United States. That is embarrassing.
We are the most drugged nation onthe planet and we're one of the sickest
ones. What's wrong with this picture? But none of those labels on these

(31:17):
drugs is class of antidepressant drugs.SSRIs warn that these sexual side effects could
last for years after the person stopstaking the drug. In Canada health regulators,
they're acknowledged back in twenty twenty onethat these side effects can last for
years. Now, you need toknow that ninety five percent of the body's

(31:38):
serotonin production, which is what thesedrugs are messing with, is produced in
your gut, in your intestine.Ninety five percent of our serotonin is produced
in our gut. You would thinkdoctors would focus on that and helping the
body to make more serotonin so itwouldn't have to block its uptake by giving
you a drug that messes you over. The question becomes, why isn't there

(32:01):
a greater effort to correct the intestinalimbalances which may be negatively impacting serotonin production
in people who are depressed or anxious. That's the question. What about encouraging
depressed people to exercise more? Weknow that helps with depression. How about

(32:22):
encouraging people who are depressed and anxiousto get more sunlight. How about more
talk therapy rather than pharmaceuticals. Howabout taking supplements to help the body in
general and particularly the area of thebody that makes the serotonin, like probiotics
like doctor ohis probably oats, orgoing to the health food store and taking
five htp trip to Fan or SaintJohn's Wart or trip to Fan. It

(32:45):
goes on and on, and youwonder, well, if the body makes
ninety five percent of our needed serotonin, what happens? Why do people get
depressed? How about antibiotics that havedestroyed that part of the body, taking
anti antibiotics unnecessary, or taking otherpharmaceuticals which destroy the microbiome in the gut,
disallowing the body to make it serotonin. Then you don't get the serotonin

(33:08):
and you feel depressed. You seehow getting into this circle of drugs is
problematic. Well, how about alsoproviding this eating kiwi extra kiwi in your
diet, which has trip to fanin it, which is a precursor to
serotonin. You can do that darkchocolate, the good kind, the one
without lots of sugar and milk, the one that's at least seventy percent cacao.

(33:32):
Yeah, you can raise your serotoninwith that. Kim Chi, sour
kraut. These are all things thatare fermented, yogurt, Kiefer, kombucha.
They can ferment in your gut andhelp you to make more serotonin and
be less depressed. They help modulatethe release of these neurotransmitters, these via

(33:52):
the friendly bacteria. Now, justto keep people from being depressed. Uh.
My co pilot of the show,Phil said he heard something recently about
somebody singing a song about taking thesethings and taking pills for this and that.

(34:15):
Let's play that, Phil, golike them. I'm taking with a
dose of estrogen mixed with demarrol andprozec. Now I've got hair on my
chin. Son's on riddle len andbestraw. We thought he had add but
it turns out that the whole timehe is justin. Soob, if you're

(34:37):
a help, listen, decline, just take ten pills and you'll find your
fun. Oh my gosh, isn'tit true? I mean, I know
depression is a serious subject and we'renot, you know, making fun of
that, because people are truly depressed. But the way that we handle this

(34:59):
thing is absurd. I mean, here we I have in my hands a
study that says study destroys SSRI antidepressanttheory. First in twenty twenty two and
Landmark Research shot a large hole inthe whole low Serotonin Causes depression biochemical narrative,
previously accepted uncritically as the gospel, and which has sustained the multi billion

(35:24):
dollar SSRII sales commerce for decades.Wow. So what they're basically saying is
it is just a drug category inventedout a whole cloth, and the only
people are really benefiting by it.And I'm sure people do benefit by it,
especially placebo theory is strong and livinglife large. It's there. All

(41:19):

Readers digest condensed version. Brevity isappreciated, making it fair for everybody wishing
to get into the program. Allright, speaking of callers, let's get
back to it. Next up onthe call is Chuck calling in from Lexington,

(41:40):
Tennessee. Chuck from Lexington, Tennessee. I understand why I don't have
body odor, but why am Idrug resistant? Also, well, you
may be drug resistant because of andI'm not sure how he was talking in

(42:05):
reference to connecting the body odor himnot having body odor and having a drug
resistant resistance, and he could bedrug resistance because every one of our detox
system, which happens in the liverprimarily there's different phases of detoxification in the
liver, is complicated from a chemistrystandpoint. I won't bore you, but

(42:30):
each one of us has a littlebit of a different detox system on board.
A classic example is to explain this, Chuck, is to think about
this. I mean, how manypeople do you know that you eventually find
out if they drink let's say,one or two beers, they're like inebriated,
they can't even function or stand up. And then the next person,

(42:52):
their buddy or the person that they'rewith sitting next to them, they can
drink almost a half a half ofa bottle of wine or a six packer
more of beer and not be toohobbled by it, not seem to be
too intoxicated. It all has todo with the way that our body detoxifies

(43:15):
us through the liver and how fastand efficient those levels of detoxification are.
And some people genetically are just notgeared toward you know, toxic load,
you know, personally myself, Idon't mind telling you if and when I
do, and I rarely do havean adult beverage and some special celebration.

(43:39):
Oh it doesn't take much for meto feel it. Oh my gosh.
And I've got friends again that coulddrink whole bottles of wine, they can
take shots on end. It justseem like nothing is happening, and I
feel sorry for them because my bodyis saying no, and it punishes me
immediately, and a lot of otherpeople understand it can relate to this.

(43:59):
They get high easy. I wouldbe a very cheap date if I was
single, and I'm not. I'vebeen married well as of this August fifty
years. I'm not complaining or bragging. I'm just saying so. It has
to do with the way that wedetoxify, and also drug resistance can have
something to do with your exposure, your previous exposure. We now hear about

(44:21):
all this drug resistant activity that's goingon with antibiotics. They have been abused
and used by the medical profession.Yes, antibiotics are miracle drugs, no
question about it. If you geta bacterial infection that can save your life,
it is saved countless lives. Butwhen you take it so much,

(44:42):
either in the form of prescription drugsor it's in the beef that you're eating,
because cattle and livestock they get pumpedfull of antibiotics to get them fattened
up, keep out of infections. That goes into your body makes you drug
resistant for the next drug that theymay give you to save your life,
or it's in something else the wateror whatever. It may be, and

(45:04):
these could be some of the reasonswhy you are drug resistant. But you
can work with a functional medicine traineddoctor or an integratively trained doctor to go
through a detoxification process in your liver, clean up your gut, and give
you the appropriate nutrients and diet andlifestyle and maybe you can overcome this drug

(45:28):
resistance issue you have. Anyway,Chuck again, thank you for your phone
call. Appreciate you listening into theprogram and calling in with your questions.

(49:44):
if we can get another caller inbefore the end of the hour. Next
up is Rich calling in from Denver, Colorado. I got to Bob.
I'm Rick from Denver, and myquestion is I'm trying to figure out how
to get four out of my bathwater. I like to take detox baths,
I know, like putting things likelemons in there and theyking soa have

(50:08):
some salt helps get rid of it, but I really can't find it silted
for the bathtub. And I justwonder if you had any input. Okay,
Rick from Denver, thank you foryour phone call. Yeah, that's
an issue because if you're going tosit there and soak, maybe in a
bathtub, maybe it's a good ideato have the cleanest water coming into that
bathtub as possible. And some ofthe city and state municipalities have larger quantities

(50:36):
and higher concentrations of both fluoride andchlorine, which when you're in contact with
it does there's a certain amount ofit absorbs into your body and it can
impact certain organs and glands and tissues, including the thyroid gland. A lot
of doctors are looking at that thesedays, how these fluorides and chlorides and

(50:57):
stuff impacts the way that the hormonezones are in the thyroid gland. So
but the best system, rich,if you're in control of it, is
to have a whole house water systeminstalled. Make an investment in your health.
These whole house water systems help toremove these kinds of toxins and some

(51:23):
of them are more sophisticated, someare not. And that's what you would
be doing as you would be inquiringto the companies that make these whole house
water systems to say, okay, look what I want filtered out in a
perfect world into my home so thatI can perhaps drink the water, because

(51:44):
I'm certainly not going to drink sinkwater, and I also want to bathe
in it. I want that stuffremoved. So tell me about the water
system you have and how much itcosts, and has it been proven to
remove fluoride and chlorine in my water? And if so, I'll buy it.
I'm down. And then you getit and you never have to worry
about it again. You don't haveto worry about it brushing your teeth coming

(52:07):
through the faucet, or taking ashower or taking a bath. You'd be
looking for a whole house water systemthat blocks through these hepaphila or not hepa
filters, but charcoal filters and othersophisticated filtration technology to block these elements,
these toxicities that you don't want orneed. That technology exists, Rick,

(52:30):
and I'm glad you brought it up. Good health to you, sir.
All Right, ladies and gentlemen, stick around when we come back. We're
going to talk about how marriage morelikely to save you from cancer than chemo.
I kid you not. I'm doctorBob Martin.
