most of the time. Coming upthis hour, we have the Health Alternative
of the Week, the Health outrageof the Week. We have a product
recall to talk about. We've gota top ten obese cities in America list.

(01:45):
Oh boy, wonder if the cityyou're living in is on the list.
And we'll finish off the hour withthe health mystery of the week.
So stay tuned and we'll get twophone calls and your health questions coming up
as well. We begin, however, this hour talking about DCLF coffee.
Are you sitting down why DCALF coffeeis linked to the Big C and I

(02:09):
do mean cancer? Well. Surveysshow that twenty six million Americans report drinking
DCLF coffee on a regular basis,Whether it's due to a desire to limit
caffeine try to avoid sleep disturbances whichfull throttled caffeine and coffee and energy drinks

(02:31):
can create, or you try toget away from coffee full throttled caffeine because
you have stomach problems with it orloose stool. Well, here we go
with this health advocacy group having petitionedthe Food and Drug Administration to remove a

(02:52):
chemical used to produce decaf coffee fromthe food supply. The chemical is called
methylene chloride. Methylene chloride has beenlinked to cancer in humans and animals.
With its minimal caffeine content, dcafcoffee is often touted as a better for

(03:15):
you alternative than traditional full throttle caffeinecoffee, but in recent months, concerns
have cropped up over this chemical usedto get the caffeine to extract the caffeine
from the coffee bean, and someexperts are saying it's dangerous. We're talking

(03:37):
about methylene chloride, which is what'sbeing used to get rid of the caffeine
off the decalf. The conversation overthe potential health risks of decaf coffee began
six months ago or so when anumber of health advocacy groups, including the
Environmental Defense Fund, petitioned the Foodand Recdministration FDA to ban the use of

(03:59):
this chemical called methylene chloride. Itis frequently used in the production of decaffeinated
coffee. Their petition states that methylenechloride, in addition to three other substances,
has been shown to cause cancer inhumans and animals, and is therefore
unsafe to include in the food supply. Currently, the FDA permits concentrations of

(04:21):
methylene chloride below ten parts per millionin decaffeinated beans, but is considering the
group's petition to prohibit the use ofits additive entirely. Further, just in
April, the Environmental Protection Agency EPAbanned most chemical or most commercial uses of

(04:44):
this methylene chloride that's in these decalfbeans that to take the caffeine out to
protect worker's health. Now, thismethylene chloride is bad news, folks.
It's colorless. It's a liquid thathas a range of uses when it come
comes to food production. Specifically, the FDA allows methylene chloride use in three
different circumstances. One is in decalfcoffee production. The chemical is used to

(05:09):
remove the caffeine as I mentioned, and coffee beans are first boiled in hot
water and then rinsed with this methylenechloride, which selectively bonds to caffeine and
methylene chloride gets this caffeine out ofthe bean. From there, coffee beans
are dried and roasted at approximately fourhundred degrees or higher, which removes basically

(05:32):
all of the remaining methylene chloride minusthe residual amount. It's the residual amount
that's left in there that researchers areworried about. It's still in there.
It's sort of like being a littlepregnant. There is no such thing.
Either have it in there or not. Now, if that were the only
thing you were exposed to in aday, a small amount of methylene chloride

(05:54):
in your decalf coffee, that wouldbe one thing. But that's not the
only thing you're exposed to. We'reexposed to a thousands of chemicals. That
just adds to your burden of toxicitythat you don't eat or want taking wrists
down the road. Why do it? The FDA also permits small amounts of
methylene chloride residue in hops extract, which is used in the manufacture of certain

(06:15):
beers. The chemical is also sometimesused in spice production. Can't tell you
which one. Beyond this, methylenechloride is mostly widely used in an industrial
solvent and paint stripper. Oh mygosh, they use this as an industrial
solvent. This methylene chloride that's beingused at Decaf Coffee. They use it

(06:38):
as a way to get crusty oldpaint off of wood as a paint stripper,
or off metal yuck. The chemicalcan also be found in aerosol products,
spray paints, car cleaners, andcan be used to manufacture camera film.

(07:00):
Oh my gosh, methylene chloride, folks is dangerous to choose more mentally
processed foods. You probably heard theadmonition not to consume ingredients you don't recognize,
so it's understandable if methylene chloride's nameand function as a paint stripper make
it sound like something to avoid, you might want to think about that.

(07:25):
And the Environmental Defense Funds petition mentionsmethylene chloride and how it's been linked to
cancer. It's considered a probable humancarcinogen, which means it can start cancer,
and the Occupational Safety and Health AdministrationOSHA also states that workplace exposure to

(07:46):
methylene chloride can lead to an increasedrisk of cancer and problems with your heart,
your liver, your central nervous system, and your skin. And this
exposure can happen via inhalation or contactwith skin while people are working the FDA
has set a limit of ten partsper million of the methylene chloride to decalf

(08:11):
coffee, which equates to ten dropsof water to ten gallons of water.
So, yes, there's a minusculeamount of methylene chloride you're being exposed to
if you drink decalf coffee. Butthat's not the only chemical you're exposed to.
Remember, we get hit with tensof thousands of these things on a
daily basis. Past reports, includinga twenty twenty three report from Clean Labeled

(08:35):
Project, have highlighted elevated levels ofmethylene chloride in certain coffee brands and decalf
products. However, if you're concernedabout your exposure to methylene chloride, some
companies use a decaffeinating process that avoidsthe chemical entirely. I get that you

(09:01):
don't want to go back to caffeine, full throttle coffee or energy drinks to
keep your eyes open so you don'tfall asleep driving that heavy machine called a
car or a truck. I getit. But on the other hand,
you don't want to drink something that'sgot a cancer of potential cancer causing agent
in it, like methylene chloride either. Well, well, maybe this is

(09:22):
the answer for you. You maywant to opt for decaf coffee brands that
use the Swiss water process or carbondioxide method for decaffeination, both of which
do not involve methylene chloride, thetoxin that we're talking about, which unbeknownst

(09:46):
to you prior to now, Andthat's why the Doctor Bob Martin Show exists
to bring this information to you, because, let's face it, there are
tens of millions of people twenty eightmillion, twenty six twenty seven to twenty
eight million people who are using dcalfand are being exposed to this methylene chloride
whether they know it or not.A typical cup of decaf coffee contains only

(10:11):
about two milligrams of caffeine. Yeah, it contains a little bit of caffeine
compared to a regular cup of coffee, which is about ninety five milligrams or
more of caffeine. But you certainlydon't want to add anything to your already
existing toxic burden load which most peopleare exposed to on a daily basis.

(10:33):
Get the methylene chloride out of yourdiet and stay tuned for the health alternative
of the week, because when wetalk about problems like this, I'm going
to offer up a really good andeasy solution that's healthy for you detail these
decaf coffee users, So stay tunedfor that. You are tuned into the

(11:58):
But if all you're tuning in forthe first time, we also have a

this. It's on my website atdoctor Bob dot com. Doctr bob dot
com. Should ultra process foods suchas donuts and French fries, cookies and
junk food be banned from selling thoseand making them available at schools and hospitals

(12:22):
to stop them from pushing aside allthe more nutritious alternatives that we have and
we know about and we ought tobe using. Yes or no? What

state your first name, the cityand state you're living in. Turn your
radio down for sure that it's notbluring in the background. That's very distracting.
First name, city and state, and then your question or your health
comment, making it brief. Revityis appreciated that number eight hundred six zero

(13:11):

leave a health comment or health relatedquestion. All right, it's time now,
ladies and gentlemen, for this week'sinstallment of the health Alternative of the
Week. All right, Well,I understand that the first segment of the

(13:46):
show, I Scared the beujibis outof those people who are decalf coffee drinkers,
because well, I stated the latestinformation out about a chemical that is
used to take the caffeine off thecoffee bean, which is a known carcinogen.
So there's the problem. But I'mgonna also offer up a solution beyond

(14:07):
just the Swiss process, which youcan remove through water. That's expensive.
The coffee costco way up, andI don't know where to find it anyway,
But here's a way to extricate yourselffrom coffee all together, so that
there's zero caffeine and there's zero methylenechloride, the known carcinogen that decaf coffee

(14:31):
drinkers are getting into every day.The health alternative of the week is called
Tichino roasted ground herbal coffee. Haveyou heard of it? Tichino roasted ground
herbal coffee, a dark brew madewith herbs, roots, fruits, nuts,
known as tichino, is a blendof naturally caffeine free herbs, roots,

(14:56):
fruits nuts that are roasted and groundto brew, and they taste almost
exactly like coffee really good tasting. One morning in nineteen ninety three. This
is how this Tichino spelled te teci or cci n o tsino came to

(15:22):
be. Caroline McDougall. She awokefrom a dream with a vision to create
a bold, robust coffee from roastedherbs. Propelled by her own sensitivity to
caffeine and the acidity that caused herto have digested problems, Caroline designed Tichino

(15:43):
to satisfy both coffee and tea drinkersalike, with a rich, full body
taste with health benefits and array offlavors and blends such as French roast,
Mexican chocolate, hazelnut, orange, dark chocolate, and dandelion coconut. Those

(16:03):
are all the different flavors you cantry in the Tichino line. Every cup
of tichino is brimming with nutritious, healthful benefits that are naturally released during the
brewing and are quickly absorbable because thenutrients are suspended in liquid, so digestion
isn't needed to remove them from fiber. It's a satisfying, warm drink that

(16:30):
will give you all the pleasure ofcoffee without the toxins of the methylene chlorid
if you're a decaf drinker, orthe negative effects of caffeine as a drug
on your central nervous system because it'scaffeine free. So if you're looking to
reduce caffeine, quitting coffee, maybelosing weight, going on a clans,

(16:53):
rebuilding your digestion, or improving youroverall health, you'll find in encouragement with

at natural grocers dot com. Naturalgrocers dot com. You're looking for this

of the week. All right, let's get right back to work with your
telephone calls and your questions. Nextup, we say hello to Lashan in

(18:25):
fort Worth, Texas. Good even. My name is Lashawan, calling from
Fort Worth, Texas, and Ithank the Lord that I found your program
just this year. But it hasbeen such a great help for me.
I have a question for my husbandwho has vision loss because of the nerve

(18:47):
optic nerve. I believe the doctorsaid. The doctor pretty much states that
there's nothing that they can do aboutit. I was wondering if because it's
a nerve damage, is there anyhelp force someone with nerve damage. My
number is listen to your program tomorrowand hopefully you get an answer or get

(19:11):
some kind of direction. But thankyou so much for all that you do.
And it has just been a blessingthat I found your program this year.
Thank you, You're very welcome.Such a sweet lady. Thank you
Lashawn for calling in Fort Worth,Texas area. Look, yes there is
something. Just because your doctors saythere's nothing that can be done doesn't mean

(19:32):
there's nothing that can be done. They just don't know what can be done.
Therefore, patients say, well,I guess not that that's the gospel.
Can't do anything. No, no, it's not true. Nerve tissue
can be often regenerated. Retinal damageis serious. What I would suggest is
we start with something called saffron extract. You can get this at health food
stores. This is stuff is amazing, saffron extract. It's the latest,

(19:56):
greatest stuff at helping rehabilitate damage nervetissue. Retinal damage, nerve tissue.
Now, let's just hope that thiscan be repaired, and I think it
can. Saffron extract, Vitamin Heneeds to be on a good supply of
vitamin A, vitamin C, vitaminD, E, and zinc, and

(20:17):
you can get all of those inan antioxidant formula at your local health food
store. In addition to that, the I supplements that all have to be
included in every I formula need tobe lutian xiaxanthon bill berry. And then
you want a form of B twelvewhich causes nerve growth factor called methyl colbaloman

(20:38):
B twelve methyl colbaloman B twelve andlastly, alphai poic acid. You give
him this full regiment of nutrients overthe next three to six months, and
let's hope that we can improve hisvision because I've seen it happen. And
if you missed all of that,go back and listen to it in the
podcast library. Stay tuned. I'mdoctor Bob. Margin anybody's called a fay

(21:00):
mistakes, but everybody's got a choiceto make. Everybody needs a leave of
faith. When are you taking youmoney? You in funds? All right,
doctor Bob marching back with you.Thank you so very much for tuning
into the program today and telling othersto do the very same thing. We

(21:21):
so appreciate you being here. Iwant to let you know too. We
have a caller hotline phone number thatyou can call in anytime you like,
in the night or day, inthe convenience and privacy of your home and
ask a health related question, eitherabout yourself or somebody else, or make
a health related comment. Here's thetoll free numbers so that you have it

(21:42):
for safekeeping. And if you're healthy, excellent, But if you've got somebody
in your life that's not passed thisnumber on to them and my website one
eight hundred six to zero six eightyeight twenty two eight hundred six zero six
eighty eight twenty two is our callerhotline for health questions or comments, and

(22:02):
the website doctor bob dot com spellingout the word doctor docto r bob dot
com Call her hotline eight hundred sixzero six eighty eight twenty two. Now,
before we get to the health outrageof the week, which is lengthy
but important, I want to remindyou that you might be doing a lot

(22:26):
of good things for yourself. AndI like that when I hear people that
are exercising regularly, that are eatingwell and staying away from the standard American
diet and eating more of a moreof a Mediterranean style diet. People that
are working on their stress levels bylowering their stress somehow someway, by keeping

(22:48):
a positive metal attitude, by surroundingyour social circle with positive people, taking
nutritional supplements. All of that's good, but you also need to make sure
you don't miss out on the opportunityto keep inflammation low in your oral cavity,
because so much inflammation begins in themouth, in the gums area,

(23:11):
in the teeth, in your oralmicrobiome in the mouth, and it invades
deeper into your body and it sabotagesand undermines your overall health with all these
good things you're using, So youshould use what I do, and that
is the Spry Spry dental defense system. My entire family uses it. I
use it, my colleagues use it. That understand health. We don't want

(23:34):
tooth decay, we don't want gingivitis, we don't want peridontal disease, we
don't want bad breath, and wedon't want all the toxins that are in
the prototypical toothpaste. I don't carewhich one you name, Crest, Colgate,
Thera brand, it doesn't matter. You look at the ingredient list and
so many of those four or fivesix syllable words you can't pronounce them.
You know they're not right. Sprytoothpaste and mouthrints. The stuff's amazing.

(24:03):
Now. I don't know about you, but I get a little uptight and
stressed when I have to visit mydental hygienas for a biannual cleaning. I
don't want the dentists coming in aftershe looks in there or he looks in
there and saying, oh, youhave the need for a tooth filling or
a crown or no. I don'twant any of that, and that's why

(24:26):
I use Spry Spry tooth based mouthrents. I even chew their gum and
their mints, suck on their mintsbecause it is important to keep the bad
germs out of the oral cavity. And that's what Spry does. It tricks
the germs into believing there's food therewhen it's really not. Now, this
stuff is delicious too. It comesin peppermint, cinnamon, and spearmint.

(24:49):
It works, it gets results. That's what matters. The plant based ingredient
in Spry toothpaste and mouth rents, gum and mince is anti cavity, anti
plati, anti bad news, sothat you don't have to worry about the
next time you're a your dental hygienistor your dental practice and they peer into
your mouth and they whisper one ofthose dreaded words or dreaded conversation with you.

(25:15):
You have a filling, you needa root canal, you need a
crowd, you need an extraction ouch. No. With a dental Spry dental
defense system, it creates an easyand inexpensive way to keep that from happening,
reduce your risk and have squeaky clean, fresh looking white teeth and no
bad breath from it either. SpryDental Defense find it at CBS and write

(25:40):
eight pharmacist, target vitamin shops, sprouts and natural grocers. For more information,
go to Clear dot com x lear dot com for Spray Dental Defense
System. All right, it's timenow for the health outrage of the week.
She's come on each time for thehealth outrage because it's nothing bullet it's

(26:07):
outrageous. It's not only a healthoutrage of the week, it's an outrage
of the month. It's the outrageof the year, it's the rage of
the decade. The health outrage ofthe week is check that. How about
the year? The broken healthcare systemhere in the US ranks dead last compared
to other high income countries. Andif you're not outraged, you're not paying

(26:30):
attention. Despite spending far more onhealthcare than any other nation, the US
continues to have the worst health caresystem. And when you have these television
announcers announcing that we have the besthealthcare system in the world, as soon
as you hear that come out oftheir pie hole, know that they're not
credible, and they're not doing theirhomework or they're just bamboozled. Don't get

(26:56):
bamboozled. When you compare our systemto other similar high income countries, we
are dead last. Why is thatwhen we spend the most out of any
country on the planet. There's somethingwrong with this picture. It needs to
be changed up. When you seecountries like Australia, Canada, France,

(27:17):
Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Swede, and Switzerland topping
the United States, and even theUnited Kingdom topping the United States, we've
got trouble. That was very disturbingfor a lot of people to learn about.
But it's an unsurprising finding of theCommonwealth Funds Mirror Mirror reflecting poorly that

(27:42):
the healthcare in the United States isbad news compared to other high income countries
that are doing it for a lotless, getting better results, and spending
a lot less money. For eachof the countries ranked in the Commonwealth Fund
report, researchers analyze seventy one indicatorsacross the key domains of healthcare systems,

(28:04):
performance, access to care, careprocess, administrative efficiency, equity, and
healthcare outcomes. The US ranked deadlast on these domains except one care process
in which it ranked second, resultingin an overall ranking of last. Now,

(28:27):
the sad part of this is whenyou look at this list, it's
embarrassing to believe that countries are kickingour booty when it comes to healthcare.
The US similarly ranked last among thesame peer countries in the Commonwealth Funds several
years ago worth of healthcare systems rankingreports. Remarkably, the US spends more

(28:51):
on healthcare as a proportion to grossdomestic product GDP, approaching eighteen percent.
Ladies and gentlemen, of our GDPgoes to not healthcare, but sick care,
because that's what we do. Wefix stuff when it breaks. Now,
granted, we have an emergency medicalsystem in the country that can save

(29:11):
lives, there's no question about that. But when it comes to teaching people
how to be their own best doctorsmost of the time and prevent this stuff
from happening in the first place,No, no, no, there's not
enough denaro there. There's not enoughmoney. There's not enough profitability in that.
So we fix stuff when it's broken. It's really sad. The Commonwealth

(29:32):
Fund report considers access to healthcare tobe good when people can obtain affordable care
in a timely manner. The USranked last on affordability of healthcare and ninth
on timeliness, which resulted in anoverall last place ranking for access to healthcare.

(29:52):
All right, stay tuned, comingup the top ten ob cities in
America. I'm doctor Bob Martin,so I'm a bush of number simon,

(30:19):
they have one never single minds up. I'm most today. Well, if
you think other people could benefit justlike you by tuning into the radio show

(30:40):
here, why keep it such abig secret already? I mean, we
are growing by leaps and bounds thanksto you. We are, after all,
the largest radio health talk show inAmerica in large part thanks to you
telling other people. And if you'vegot people in your life, loved one's,
friends, neighbors, co workers, your social media peeps, the best

(31:03):
way to tell them about this showis to invite them to listen to the
radio station you're listening to right nowby jotting down the call letters of the
radio station, the frequency on thedial, is it an AMRFM station,
and the time of the day,and just dole that out to as many
people as you want to help aspossible. Is there a higher calling.
I ask no, That's why I'mhere doing this. All right, ladies

(31:26):
and gentlemen, it's now time forthe product recall of the week. Well,
ice cream recalled. I hate totell you this full list of brands
impacted. A wide range of icecream products have been recalled due to a
potential contamination of Listeria. Listeria notgood. Numerous brands are included in this

(31:53):
week's product recall the week announced bythe Food and Or Administration and Manufacture Totally
Ink. That's the company, TotallyCool Ink that's got the recall going on
of the potential listeria, including theirHershey's, Friendlies, and the Frozen Farmer.

(32:15):
The issue was discovered after the FDAsampling found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes,
a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. Here's a breakdown of the across
thirteen brands that this company distributes thatare subject to the recall. The company
being Totally Cool Ink and their brandsinclude Friendlies, Alvin's Frozen Bakery, Hershey's

(32:42):
ice Cream, Yellow Marco, Jenny's, Cumberland Land Farms, The Frozen Farmer,
chip Witch, Taharka told Zina,Gelato, and Lasal those are the
brands. Listeria infections can cause foodpoisoning, which can lead to unpleasant symptoms
and can sometimes result in serious illness. Signs of listeria infection include high fever,

(33:07):
severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, and abdominal pain and diarrhea. So
if you were eating an ice creamcone or a bowl of ice cream and
you started to develop these symptoms, you might have it. Call you doctor
and stop eating the ice cream. After all, In more vulnerable individuals,
such as the very young, elderly, and those with weakened immune system,

(33:29):
these infections can be much more seriousand even deadly. So that's product recall
the week. We move right fromthe product recall of the week to the
top ten list of obese cities inAmerica. Are you wondering if you're in
one of these cities where it hasbeen tagged as one of the plumpest or

(33:58):
most obese cities in America? Maybeyou've been watching your neighbors, or you've
got friends or co workers, andyou're wondering that. Anyway, any direction
you look, you see people whoare massively overweight or obese. So the
researchers set out to look at wherethese cities are located in America the most

(34:23):
obese ones. And here we gowith the top ten obese cities in America.
Number ten on the list, Chattanooga, Tennessee, number nine, bet
and Rouge, Louisiana, Number eighton the list of the top ten most
obese cities in America, Lafayette,Louisiana. Back to Tennessee we go number

(34:49):
seven, Memphis, Tennessee coming inat number six, Knoxville, Tennessee,
number five on the list of topten most obese cities in America, Little
Rock, Arkansas. We move overto Alabama, number four, Mobile,
Alabama, coming in at number fourin the top ten most obese cities in

(35:15):
America. Number three on the listis Shreveport, Louisiana. Man oh Man,
Louisiana. In that on this lista lot? What are they eating
down there or doing? Number twoon the list of top ten most obese

(35:37):
cities Jackson, Mississippi. And cananybody guess the number one obese city in
the United States? According to thesesurveyors who go out and gather these data
set points? Can you guess it? Is it? The city you live

(35:58):
in? Are you living in themost obese city in the United States?
Not something to hang your head orto brag about if you live there.
But and I'm not making fun ofpeople, but I tell you what McAllen,
Texas is on top. I guessif you want to call a gold

(36:22):
Medal for obesity, that's where it'sat in McAllen, Texas, where apparently
the most obese people in America reside. I guess if I had a weight
loss center, I'd probably open upmultiple offices there, and perhaps there they
are located there. I don't know. There you have it, the top

(36:45):
ten most obese cities in America andof course the product gree Call of the
Week. We'll be right back. You're tuned into the Doctor Bob martinshow and
he said, Sunday out of youin the chambers to live like you again?

(37:10):
What's your gift? And you goteternity to think about what you do
with it? What did you dowith it? What did I do it?
All right? Had to wait forthe payoff there with Tim McGraw.
Thank you so very much for tuninginto the program today, ladies and gentlemen,

(37:32):
we just have a few minutes left. I thought I would dedicate it
to the health mystery of the week. Here we go. You might ask
the question, when your brain isgoing through all of its metabolic processes,
where does the waste products go?I need? I mean, your blood

(37:54):
is clean through your kidneys and detoxthrough your liver, and you gotta live
phatic system and your skin and everything. But where does the brain waste go?
Scientists think they finally figured how themystery. Scientists are beginning to understand
how the brain flushes out waste productsin order to stay healthy and fend off

(38:15):
these neurological diseases that we so oftenhear about that are tragic. Two teams
of scientists from Washington have uncovered signsthat a slow wave of electricity that pulses
through the brain during sleep pushes wasteproducts, including the protein closely associated with

(38:37):
Alzheimer's disease, from deep in thebrain to its surface. A vein passing
through the brain then acts as apipe to carry waste products out through the
barrier that separates the brain and therest of the body. This deposits them
into the bloodstream to be filtered outby the kidneys. But if the disposal

(39:00):
system stops working correctly, which canoccur with aging. In cases of traumatic
brain injury and chronic stress, thosewaste products can accumulate in the brain and
pull you down hardcore. It mayalso it may also allow immune cells to
penetrate the organ, leading to inflammationlinked to degenerative brain disorders. Now,

(39:23):
this study that they figured this outin this mystery was conducted in the animal
model, but researchers believe their findingsmatch up with research on potential causes of
Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Thislast February, scientists led by doctor Jonathan
Kipness, a neurologist at Washington StateUniversity in Saint Louis, answered the question

(39:45):
of how the brain gets waste outthrough the rapid protective barrier without using the
body's lymphatic system, a network ofdrains and fluids throughout the body. The
brain is not part of that system, and its waste disposal pathway is known
as the glymphatic system. Did youeven know about that? I never heard

(40:07):
about it until I read this. The glymphatic system it clears out waste generated
by energy consuming metabolic processes. Allthe chemical processes that continually working in the
body to ensure functions correctly, suchas carbon dioxide, damage by proteins and
dead cells. So I finally unraveledthe mystery of how the brain gets rid

(40:30):
of its waste through the glymphatic system. Amazing. It's the health mystery of
the week. I want to wishyou a healthy day and a healthy week
until we talk again. You've beenlistening to the Doctor Bob Margin Show.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
