Anyone who has consumed a Quarter Pounder hamburger from McDonald's in recent weeks is being urged to stay alert if they notice changes to their bodies. A major outbreak of the bacteria E Coli has been linked to about fast food stores in Mountain West states, killing one and hospitalizing 10 others. The outbreak has resulted in about 2,700 stores, roughly one-fifth of those in the US, discontinuing the chain's Quarter Pounder. [‘The Dr. Bob Martin Show’]

dot com, doctor bob dot com. You have the social
media platform over there where you can follow me and
I post up things that we're going to talk about
on this program before it airs over at instagram x
and LinkedIn Now. Last hour, I sort of teased this

(02:26):
before our special guest in a discussion about the big
c we had, which was good and if you missed it,
it'll be in the podcast libraries of this coming Wednesday.
But we talked about the cancer and how to reduce
your risk and an amazing story of a lady who's
been going now for eighteen years, using unconventional ways to
manage her cancer, and you might want to listen to

(02:49):
that story in the podcast library as of this coming Wednesday.
But I teased before we brought our special guest Larry
Lougxton on the show, I teased an article about how
these autoimmune diseases are going up all the time, and
autoimmune disease, just so you have a recollection of it,
is a condition in which your body's immune system mistakes

(03:14):
its own healthy tissues as a foreign substance or activity,
and it attacks them. Most of these autoimmune diseases cause
inflammation that can affect so many parts of our bodies.
And some of the more common forms of autoimmune diseases
that you may recognize, there's like over one hundred of them.

(03:36):
But the ones that you might recognize or hear about,
or maybe you have one or somebody else does, Type two,
type one diabetes, type one diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, chigrins,
what else, Crohn's disease, psoriasis. They're all autoimmune diseases where

(03:58):
the body is attacking itself, as strange as it sounds,
for some reason, and there's a lot of speculation as
to why it does. So why would the body attack itself, Well,
it's seeking out a mission to destroy something it doesn't like.
Usually that's an underlying, low grade, simmering infection of some
sort that's not been recognized and has not been put

(04:21):
down properly or completely. And I mean, you've got at
least twenty five to fifty million Americans with autoimmune diseases.
Most of the them are women, about eighty percent. So
what do you do? Well? I brought to the table
some information you might want to know about one to
prevent autoimmune disease with a special vitamin. It's available, and

(04:42):
it's inexpensive, and most people need more of it. And
if you have an autoimmune disease, you should be taking
this absolutely, no question about it. And that vitamin is
vitamin D. Three researchers have discovered a link between vitamin
D deficiency and autoimmune diseases, lighting the importance of adequate intake,

(05:03):
especially during childhood development. And so it's not just an
adult vitamin. This should be used by children as well
to try to reduce their risk going forward. Now we're
in fall right now, and winter's coming soon. It'll be
here in December, toward the end of December, and of
course we've got all these beautiful colors now with fall

(05:24):
here and the changing of the temperatures, they're dropping and
in some places these changes signal that it is time
to brace yourself for winter. And during winter, of course,
the sun's angle is too low to produce vitamin D
in the skin, and this affects our levels of this

(05:45):
essential nutrient that's actually a hormone, believe it or not,
but we call it a vitamin. And when you have D,
as in dog vitamin D three deficiency, things can get
very very bad. In fact, the nickname of vitamin D
is the sunshine vitamin or the winter vitamin. Vitamin D,

(06:05):
ladies and gentlemen, is so essential as a nutrient that
it has been established to help the body absorbed calcium
to promote strong bones. It helps strengthen our immune system.
It plays an important role in our cardiovascular system. It
helps maintain our muscle mass, regulate our blood pressure. It

(06:26):
helps our kidneys manage salts. It plays a role in
our brain health and our cognitive function, our memory, and
promotes healthy growth in all tissues that it is receptive
for and about. So vitamin D is critical. We don't
test for it enough in terms of blood testing, and

(06:46):
we should be doing that on a regular basis. So
the next time you're in your doctor's always getting a
blood test, make sure you ask for a twenty five
hydroxy vitamin D test. Just say vitamin D, doctor, please
please check my vitamin D. Most people will come up
low if you're not taking it or you're not in
the sun on a regular basis. And I'm not saying

(07:08):
to go out and get sunburns. No, you need small
amounts of sun on a freaking basis. That's good. That's
how you get the conversion of the ultraviolet rays hitting
your cholesterol and your skin and converting that to vitamin D. Ultimately.
Most recent research published in Science Advances has discovered another
important role of vitamin D in which it helps to

(07:30):
regulate our immune system. As a child develops, the thymus
glan which is up in the upper chest area right
between your clavigals area just below and below your sternam.
There it helps to train the immune system's cells to
distinguish between body tissue and these invaders. The new research

(07:54):
that I'm talking about suggests that vitamin D deficiency during
this crucial stage of life causes our thymus glands, which
is massively important to our immune capacity, to age more quickly.
So if children grow up and they're not outdoors getting
enough sunlight, or they're not getting it dietarily, which is

(08:18):
hard to do to get, then they end up with
vitamin D deficiency early in life, and their thymus gland suffers,
and therefore their immune system suffers, and they are at
a higher risk down the road of developing these brutal
and mysterious autoimmune diseases, of which there are more than
one hundred of them. Depending on your genetic makeup, it

(08:41):
might be triggered. So what impacts vitamin D deficiency well,
An aging thymist leads to a leaky immune system that
according to author of this study, doctor John White, a
professor in and the chair of McGill's University Department of Physiology.

(09:02):
He says in a quote, this means the thymus gland
becomes less effective at filtering out immune cells that could
mistakenly attack healthy tissues, increasing the risk of these autoimmune
diseases like type one diabetes, especially in children. You add
to that, in children, you give them milk too early

(09:23):
in life, cow milk as a toddler or an infant,
and that at ratchets up type one diabetes, another autoimmune problem.
And doctor White also goes on to say, our findings
bring new clarity to this connection and could lead to
new strategies for preventing autoimmune diseases. Well, this strategy should
be everybody needs to get checked for vitamin D in

(09:46):
their blood testing on a regular basis at least annually,
and should be taking vitamin D on a regular basis. Now,
this breakthrough study builds on previous research following over ten
thousand children finding that those given dietary supplements early in
life containing vitamin D three D three to avoid developing

(10:08):
vitamin D deficiency had a fivefold decrease in the risk
of developing type one diabetes later in life. Now, add
to that, you're keeping these children away from cow milk.
I mean early on, we're talking about toddlers and infants.
You just cannot feed them cow milk or they're at
risk of type two type one diabetes because it's risky.

(10:28):
So there's the key. Make sure you get tested and
take vitamin D three on a maintenance level, and make
sure your children are getting tested for it. There's food
sources of it, of course, to salmon, sardines, cod liver oil, egg, yolks, types,
certain types of mushroom have sources of vitamin D, but

(10:49):
supplementally is where it's at. Folks. All right, when we
come back from this break, we're gonna get right after
phone calls into the show. I'm doctor Bob marchin trouble.

Speaker 4 (11:03):
You know you.

Speaker 5 (11:08):

part that's thanks to you. We so appreciate you telling
other people about this radio show so they too can

(11:45):
news and information that we bring to the table. The
extension of this radio show is my personal website over

D O C T O R Bob dot com. You've
got the podcast libraries all over there, and we also

(12:07):
the Doctor Bob Martin Show Caller hotline phone number. You

health will break down. Your body, you know, can give
you signals and signs, and if you need quick help,
call this number and I will you'll hear me answering

(12:29):
the phone, and I will ask you to give your
first name only, first name only, the city and state
in which you're living in, and the question that you
want to ask about your health or the health of
somebody else. It's that simple again. The number eight hundred
six zero six eighty eight two to two eight hundred
six zero six eighty eight twenty two. All right, let's go. First,

(12:54):
up is Mark calling in from Medford, Oregon.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Yeah, Doctor Bob, this is Mark, Medford, Oregon. Two weeks
ago we were shopping, I got in the got into
the house and I started going white, gone of losing cognitive.

(13:17):
My face was white as a ghost. Betsy had to
grab my walker and help me sit down. I seed
myself I had no control there and he had to.
He grabbed my walker and helped me, and I was

(13:40):
dragging my seat until I got to the chair in
the dining room and I had to sit there for
about twenty minutes and very concerned about the issue.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Thank you, Doc, Okay, Mark, thank you for your phone call.
You know, when when situations like this arise, the best
thing you can do is called nine to one one.
You need to do that. That's an emergency situation all
I mean, from the get go, those are emergencies nine
to one one. Best thing to do not sit around

(14:17):
and try to analyze it, or call a relative for
a lifeline. No, no, no, or call radio show.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
No.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
You need to get to an emergency room because this
could be any number of serious things, mark from possible
blood pressure issues. It could be your it could have
just been your blood sugar being low, or it could
be like a neurological problem like a like a possible
transient ischemic attack like a mini stroke going on. When

(14:47):
you have dramatic disabling events like you describe here. That's
why we have nine to one one. Meanwhile, I'm glad
that you're able to make the phone call here into
our caller hotline phoner, but I suggest that you get
an appointment with your medical doctor asap and get checked out.

(15:08):
They're going to probably want to do a number of
tests to try to figure out what happened, and hopefully
it won't happen again, or they can at least try
to pinpoint what it could have been and then try
to head that off. It could have been maybe something
medication you're taking. Make sure you consider that as well.
And again I'm glad you're okay, Mark, and I appreciate

(15:28):
your phone call. All right, Next up on our doctor
Bob March and caller hotline phone number at eight hundred
six zero six eight eight two two one eight hundred
six zero six eighty eight twenty two. Here comes Albert
in Lebanon, Oregon.

Speaker 6 (15:45):
Why, Doctor Bob, This is Albert from leven In, Oregon.
I've heard you talk about oregano quite a bit lately.
I get heartburn when I eat acidy foods, but I've
been putting in a lot of oregano and my dinners
and it seems like I don't get any heartburn. Is
there any relationship to that and what does help heartburn?

Speaker 7 (16:09):
That's it?

Speaker 3 (16:10):
Thanks, by Okay, thank you for your call, Albert. A
lot of people have heartburn or acid indigestion, no question
about it. And if you're getting relief by you know,
with your heartburn, by taking a reganal oil, it may
indicate that you have an infection called hpylori or Helicopacter pylori.

(16:34):
It is a bacterium that can absolutely cause heartburn and
acid indigestion. Your body when it sees that infection. It
is an infection in your stomach, and it comes through
food and water and kissing. The World Health Organization says
it about sixty percent of Americans have that infection, whether

(16:54):
they know it or not. And when you have it,
your body recognizes it and it tries to produce acid
in your stomach because that's where it ends up. Often
it tries to produce acid to try to burn it out,
but it never really burns it out because it's kind
of there and it's very invasive. So the oregano oil, however,
is very escrotic, which means that it's hot and it

(17:16):
kind of like the organism hates it because it'll burn
it out. But that's what maybe is stopping the organism
and your body from recognizing that it's there and not
producing and try to burn it out with acid. So
that's the key there. Avoid food also and drink that
tends to set your heart burn off. Watch out for alcohol, caffeine,

(17:41):
greasy foods, some spicy foods, even though oregano I would
consider that a spicy food. And of course don't use tobacco.
These are all common things that cause heartburn. And even
not chewing your food well enough before you swallow a
bite of food. I don't care what it is, you
should chew it twenty times before you swallow it. Don't

(18:03):
use lots of fluids in and around the meal, maybe
just maybe three to six ounce's maximum, but not these
big gulps, these carbonated beverages or alcohol or anything else
during a meal, because it helps to dilute important enzymes
and particularly that break down the food. So you want

(18:23):
that and you want to just kick back and not Also,
do not lie down or sit for immediately after eating.
Walk around a little bit because some people that suffer
with something called heidel hernia, which is a diaphramatic hernia
where the stomach is up through into the esophagus that
can It is a major contributor to heartburn or acid indigestion.

(18:46):
So wait, at least you know, thirty minutes before sitting
down if you want to watch television, and or three
hours before going to bed, because those will generate heartburn
for sure. All right, and I appreciate your phone and
call into the program hour. Next up is Kim. She's
calling in from Bellevue, Iowa.

Speaker 7 (19:06):
Hi, this is Kim from Bellevue, Iowa. My question is
about canker saurce I seem to have a lot of
canker saws. I know that they might be caused by
eating too much tomato. OU eat capacity foods, but I'm
wondering if there is anything to prevent those or blow

(19:29):
them down a little bit.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
All Right, Kim, thanks for your call. No, they're not
caused by eating tomato e ascidy foods, because if that
were the case, everybody at canker saws eating salsa and
tomatoes and everything else. So no, it's not that there's
something else in play here. And usually with canker sores,
we see people with B twelve deficiency. Vitamin B twelve

(19:52):
deficiency can absolutely cause canker sores to increase. Now you
want to take a methylated form of bec complex with
that methylated form of be complex with that, and see
if your iron is also low, because sometimes serum iron
or ferretin can be low. I would also suggest you
avoid gluten as much as possible, gluten like wheat, rye, spelt,

(20:18):
and grains that have gluten in them, because they can
also increase the risk of canker source. And just make
sure you don't have any dental issues happening, because they
can also cause problems. There's mouthwashes out there with dgl
or ridiculousenerized liquorice and zinc in it. I would maybe
look at that get away from sodium laurel sulfate, switch

(20:41):
over to what we call spry dental defense or spry
mouthwash or spry mouth rints. All right, Kim, thank you
very much for your phone call. I'm doctor Bob Martin.
We'll be right back. Are you waiting for the right excuse?

Speaker 4 (21:03):
Are you waiting for sign and choose?

Speaker 2 (21:06):
Why are you waiting?

Speaker 4 (21:07):
It's the time? Is money.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
In five? I'm to.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
Life the fine type.

the phone, and I will ask you to state your

calls and questions very shortly here. Before we do, though,
I want to remind you how important it is to consume,
if you have the opportunity, consume more superfruits. You may
have heard of superfruits in the past. Well, one superfruit

(23:16):
that a lot of people are talking about and researchers
are talking about because of its medicinal and therapeutic value
when you consume it. They're ronia berries Aronia ronia berries.
They're considered the king of superfruits and are rich in
important nutrients and antioxidants. Ronia berries contain what are called
phenolic compounds, which naturally help ronia berries the plant resist

(23:42):
disease and premature death. So when ronia berries are ingested
by us by humans, they have been shown to provide
anti inflammatory properties and may help us to prevent a
whole wide variety of challenges health wise, including reducing risk
of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and kidney problems and liri

(24:05):
issues and metabology disorces, even the Big Sea. So it's
worthy to note that scientific studies have proven and subsequently
published in peer review scientific journals that these ronia berries,
when consumed, have health giving compounds that were found to
be potentially able to fight and help us resist influenza

(24:28):
like an anti flu substance, which is fantastic. This is
the time of the year. We definitely want to get
to that and now you can eat, you know, some
ernia berries if you can find them in their organic source.
But if it's more cost effective and more convenient for you,
you can also take Ronia Berry Complex. It's a nutritional

(24:51):
supplement Ronia Berry Complex by a company by the name
of Terry Naturally Vitamins. It contains Erronia baric extract AB
which delivers a concentrated and consistent source of these amazing superfruit. Additionally,
Aronia very Complex includes French grape seed extract VX one
grape seed extract and incredible effective botanical for strong heart

(25:15):
muscle function, arterial protection, healthy blood pressure levels and cholesterol balance.
So look for Aronia Very Complex at finer health food
stores or you can go to the website Terry Naturally
Vitamins dot com Terry Naturally Vitamins dot com. You're looking
for Ronia Very Complex. You can also call the company

(25:37):
directly to find a store nearest to you eight six
six five nine eight five four eight seven for Ronia
Very Complex the supplement. All right, now, let's get right
back to work with your telephone calls and your questions
on the topic of health. Next up, we say hello

(25:58):
to Julie in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Speaker 5 (26:02):
Hi, Doctor Martin. My name is Julie from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
I just have a question about my father in law.
He is eighty four years old and recently has had
some kidney malfunctioning, and I guess they're just trying to

(26:25):
change his medications around. He also has gout, so they
stopped his Omega three fish oils and I was just
wondering what that reasoning could be because it doesn't have
any purines in it and didn't think it affects kidney functions.

(26:45):
So just wanted to find out what you thought about
Omega three fish oils for him. He takes like twelve
hundred milligrams a day.

Speaker 3 (26:54):
Thank you, Okay, Julie from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thank you for
your call. I appreciate it. Now I do not understand
why your dad's doctors would take him off of the
Omega three supplement he's taken. Maybe he's on some other
medication that they're concerned about, would interact with it. I

(27:15):
don't think, but you should ask them directly. I don't
see any evidence in fact Omega three oils are actually
helpful for people who suffer from gout, a form of arthritis.
They reduce inflammation. So I'm not sure what your doctors
are thinking, but I would certainly ask them directly. Maybe,
as I said, he may be on some other form
of medication for which they have good reasoning behind that,

(27:40):
so do that. But also he needs to be drinking
only pure water, no chlorinated tap water or dairy foods.
These are things that anybody that has any kind of
kidney related issue should pay close attention to, not tap
water and nol or nation. I would suggest in his case,

(28:02):
because of his kidney challenges, he drink distilled water. Now,
normally I don't recommend distilled water, but for people who
have kidney challenges, especially end stage kidney disease, they should
be drinking distilled water and getting their minerals through some
other source. You got to get the purest form of
water into him, no chlorine, no anything else. So that's
what you do. Now. There are foods also that he

(28:26):
can consume July, A variety of organic vegetables to help
with his kidney function. That's really where it's at, because
the gout situation is relevant to that. Organic veggies are
the key, and I would suggest organic veggies like leafy
green veggies, raw veggies particularly, and cook veggies. Aim for

(28:52):
a variety of those. Get them in the organic form.
If you can beats and beat juice, excellent greens. We're
talking about spinach and tomatoes, purple potatoes. Seaweed is great, cucumbers, celery,
these are all the best choices, and so the variety
of fruits are especially good, are things like cranberries, black cherries, pomegranate, blueberries.

(29:21):
And if he's consuming like lemon and lime juice, it
is also helpful for cleaning and clearing out toxins in
the kidneys. So your dad is probably not getting organic
anything in the hospital setting, and the sooner he's out
of there, once they're finished with the crisis management, the
better off he's going to be helping to control his

(29:43):
own foods at home. All right, I thank you for
calling on his behalf. Ladies and gentlemen, stand by, We're
coming right back. You are tuned into the Doctor Bob

I was thinking about putting this information in the product

(33:05):
recall the week, but it's too serious for that, and
it's too ongoing. If you ate recently at McDonald's, you're
probably hearing about this news. Take these safety measures amid
a deadly E. Coal I breakout that has happened. Anyone
who has consumed a quarter pounder hamburger at McDonald's in
recent weeks is being urged to stay alert if they

(33:28):
notice changes in their bodies. A major outbreak of the
bacteria E. Coli has been linked to about fast food stores,
a lot of fast food stores, especially in the Mountain
West States, killing one and hospitalizing. And I think the
number has gone up since this, and I think it's
in the twenties now. The outbreak has resulted in two

(33:53):
thousand and seven hundred McDonald's stores, roughly one fifth of
those in the US, discontin the chain's quarter pounder, probably
temporarily as officials suspect it's patty these patties of the
quarter pounder burgers at McDonald's to be contaminated. They thought

(34:14):
at one time it was the onions, which I don't
know if they've isolated that or not. More likely to
be the patty being an animal food as opposed to
an onion, which you know, bugs don't like as much.
The CDC says anyone who ate a quarter pounder at McDonald's,
which is consumed by one hundred thousand Americans per day.
One hundred thousand Americans consume quarter pounder burgers. I didn't

(34:38):
know that. And if you feel sick though, or if
you felt sick, you should contact your doctor immediately, and
food safety experts reported that those who ate at a
McDonald's should remain vigilant for days to over a week
after being exposed, as symptoms could evolve over time. In
other words, they are latent. E Coli kills up to

(35:00):
a fifth of people it infects, so the advice is
not to wait and to seek help immediately. So far,
a lot of Americans are confirmed to have the illness
after eating McDonald's, but that's very likely to be under counted.
I think there's at least fifty more than fifty. Tom Skinner,

(35:24):
a spokesperson for the CDC, said, we fully expect to
see more cases. McDonald's has moved rather quickly to take
action which they should hopefully to prevent as many cases
as possible, and however, the agency warned customers if you
have severe symptoms of E. Coli infection after eating a
quarter pounder hamburger at McDonald's, seek healthcare and tell your

(35:48):
provider about what you ate. While most patients recover on
their own, those with severe illness or a weakened immune
system or some other cool morbidity have been suspected of
having more serious potential. There we're talking about signs of
bloody diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and dehydration. The agency also

(36:09):
advises seeking help for these problems if they have not abated.
So the outbreak spread to at least ten states that
we know of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Montana, Utah,
and Oregon. Symptoms of this type of infection E Coli

(36:34):
include fever, abdominal pain, pale skin, fatigue, irritability, bruising, bleeding,
even from the nose and mouth, so it's serious. And
make sure you stay on top of your fluids also,
they're suggesting. So there you have it all right, stam bye,
we are coming back with the final segment of this
hour here on the Doctor Bob Martsin Show. I need

(37:01):
a miracle.

Speaker 8 (37:06):
Will no man who you are and no man watch
of Tom. There will come time and you can be
a kid on your.

Speaker 1 (37:16):
Own and then you hold out of desperation.

Speaker 3 (37:21):
Julia now and I welcome you back to this hour
The Doctor Bob Martin Show. But don't go anywhere. Coming
up shortly here, I'm going to be talking about a
popular antidepressant drug class that can turn you into a
raging alcoholic. So you go into your doctor for depression

(37:42):
and your doctor prescribes in an antidepressant drug and suddenly
you become an alcoholic. Wait to hear the story that
happened and how that can occur. Also, I'm going to
be talking about the world's dirtiest cruise ships teeming with
Oh this is you, maggots and disease revealed by the CDC.

(38:03):
All of that, plus this week's installments of the Health Alternative,
Health Outrage, Product Recall, and Health mystery. All of that's
coming up, so don't go anywhere, all right, Let's get
right back to the phone calls. To get into the
phone call and before the end of the hour, here
is here is Mary calling in from Corpus Christi, Texas.

Speaker 9 (38:19):
This is Mary from Corpus Christi, Texas. And my question
is my twenty two year old daughter is suffering from
acme and I think it may be gut health related
and we've tried many things to try to heal the

(38:39):
acme and we're just struggling with it and are trying
not to use accutain. So what are your suggestions for
trying to heal the acme? Thank you?

Speaker 3 (38:52):
All right, thank you for calling on her. Behalf well.
You got to make sure she's doing a proper cleanse
and exfoliate program. I would suggest getting some advice and
some training by a esthetician or a skin specialist. She
needs change her diet because many of these teenagers and
young people who get acne are drinking soda pop, they're

(39:15):
eating junk food and fast foods too much, so we
may be up for a dietary change. Stress is also
a factor. If she's feeling stress, find a way to
encourage her to reduce it by doing things that can
chill her out, maybe distract her with exercise, maybe meditating,

(39:37):
deep breathing exercises very important. You can also find in
health food stores some natural products that reduce acne because
it's a bacterial infection on the skin. And if you
can find one in the health food store and they're
readily available that has a combination of tea tree oil

(40:00):
in it, phenomenal for pimples and acne breakouts. Rosemary oil,
which is an essential oil, also been found to be effective.
We like to use coconut oil. We like to use
apricot seed oil for acne. And for your daughter, she
should be taking because she's likely got bacterial problems in

(40:24):
her gut, in her microbiome. I recommend doctor Ohiris probiotics,
maybe three of those right before going to bed every night,
and a good multi vitamin mineral along with golden seal
herb seven days on, seven days off for maybe sixty
or ninety days. That should help. All right, thank you
for calling on her behalf. I'm doctor Bob marchinat
