all over again. Plus the social media platforms are over
(03:15):
there that you can follow me on. It's all there
on my site at doctor Bob dot com spelling out
the word doctor doctor Bob dot com. We begin this
hour with a discussion about what happens to teenagers who
are woofing down too much caffeine. Let's say it Starbucks
(03:39):
or one of their favorite coffee shops, and particularly this
time of year. Starbucks, what they do is they roll
out these specialty drinks, seasonal specialty drinks to lure more
customers into the stores. Which is fine, it's their prerogative,
(04:00):
and it's the trendiest drink right now of the autumn season.
But you might have heard of one of these, you
may be drinking one of these yourself, or you've got
a teenager in your life that's also sucking them down.
We're talking about the pumpkin spiced latte that Starbucks and
other companies roll out during this time of year. Did
(04:21):
you know that they can actually increase the risk of
somebody becoming depressed. It increases teenager's risk of depression, It's true. Now,
large versions of the TikTok famous drink. I guess that's
where the pumpkin spiced latte originated from and sold by
(04:46):
coffee outlets throughout the nation, including Starbucks, those babies, those drinks.
The pumpkin spiced latte contains nearly one hundred and thirty
five whopping milligrams of caffeine per drink. This is far
in excess of the one hundred milligrams per day that
(05:08):
twelve to eighteen year olds are recommended to limit themselves to.
And when I'm reading that, well, why do we even
need twelve to eighteen year olds having any caffeine to
any measurable degree that's not naturally occurring, perhaps in food
or drink. Well, not only could too much of the
(05:31):
central nervous system drug stimulant called caffeine increase the risk
of heart problems, it can it can also make a
teenager more likely to develop mental health conditions like depression.
And can you imagine. Okay, so the teenagers drinking all
these pumpkin lattes and the parent notices that the teenager
(05:55):
is now depressed, has symptoms of depression. They want to
be alone. They're in their rooms, they don't want to
do anything, they don't want to eat. They seem down
and sad and lonely. The parent takes the teenager into
the medical doctor. The medical doctor diagnoses depression and they
put them on antidepressant drugs, all because they were drinking
(06:19):
too many pumpkin spiced lattes or these caffeinated energy drinks.
We know that excessive caffeine intake for young teens can
lead to an increased risk of heart problems. In fact,
it increases heart rate and can cause a condition known
as tachycardia, which is dangerous. Can be dangerous especially in
(06:42):
teens with underlying heart conditions, and especially teens who are
overweight and or received one or more COVID shots, and
these spike proteins are in their heart area or vessels.
And if their obese add one more problem, well, a
lot of them are because they're sucking down so much
(07:03):
sugar in those pumpkin spice lattes in addition to all
the caffeine, so physical harm aside, Ladies and gentlemen too
much caffeine and teenagers can lead to mood swings and restlessness.
Why do we allow them to have it? Parents need
to think about this as well as exacerbating mental health
(07:23):
issues such as anxiety and depression, which are already common
problems that adolescents teenagers have to grapple with as they're
trying to navigate through all the changes in their lives
to begin with, why do we need to add one
more stress rounder their bodies?
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Well?
Speaker 2 (07:40):
In fact that a there's a fact that the large
pumpkin spice latte contains more than a teen's dose. Limitation.
I don't know who sets those limitations up. There's apparently
a limitation of caffeine, and it means it's worth talking
to your teenager, whether it's your own injure or your grandchild.
(08:03):
Some of them are hitting it after school, and some
of them are taking it before school, and some before
and after. Remind them that there is always an option
to ask for let's say, decalf, so they're not so
wired and stressed and they're not on that caffeine high
that's whips sawing their nervous system because it does, and
(08:28):
they don't have to necessarily order the seasons on trend beverage,
or better yet, encourage the teenager to avoid Starbucks and
save a ton of money for more important things like
saving up for the purchase of an automobile or college tuition.
That would be novel idea. How about making a non
caffeinated herbal drink at home with some unsweetened coconut or
(08:52):
almond milk, maybe using some natural sweeteners like stevia, or
maybe a little bit of honeting instead of refined white sugar.
There are options, you have. Caffeine isn't the only potential
health danger posed by these pumpkin spice latts. According to
information on starbucks wess website, it's venti, its large version
(09:17):
of the pumpkin spice latte contains over forty two grams
of sugar and ten ten teaspoons of sugar. Amazing, not
good and not good for them. Consuming too much sugar, course,
has been linked to issues like obesity, tooth decay, and
(09:38):
a whole host of other health problems. Caffeine consumption among
young people has become an increased target for calls for regulation,
particularly regarding energy drinks. Energy drinks contain between eighty and
three hundred milligrams of caffeine, and some of these teenagers
do both energy drinks and the pumpkin spot pumpkin latte
(09:59):
drinks when they come out. And you've got those monster
energy examples over there with one hundred and sixty milligrams
of caffeine, and there's too many caffeinated over the top
caffeinism affected teenagers in my opinion. We know that caffeine
stimulates the person's body and can hike their blood pressure.
(10:22):
It causes blood vessels to constrict, which can consequently increase
heart rate. We know that caffeine is negatively associated with
depression in patients age twenty and older with less than
ninety milligrams, So young people teenagers thirteen to nineteen may
be adversely affected with depression, even more so based on
(10:44):
their body weight. So my suggestion is reject the pumpkin
spice latte and move to something healthier, about some water
or some non caffeinated herbal tea. We'll be right back
with our special guest, doctor Bob Martin. All right, welcome
(11:21):
or welcome back to this hour at the Doctor Bob
Martin Show. Thank you so very much for tuning into

Show call her hotline phone number, and of course the
(12:25):
website where all things health related news exists, plus the
podcast library and all the social media platforms that's over
there at doctor Bob dot com spelling out the word
doctor d Octo r Bob dot com. All right, we're
going to turn our attention now to a very important
topic that is cholesterol awareness and also heart health and
(12:45):
how you can ratchet up and ensure exercise endurance. We've
got a special guest joining us now. His name is
doctor Jim Leval. He's a good friend and colleague. He's
a c pharmacist, author, board certified clinical nutritionist and heart
health expert. We'll be talking to Jim about exciting new
(13:09):
heart health research from our friends over at Chiolic, showing
age garlic extras ability to help improve the exercise capacity
of middle aged endurance athletes and help with faster muscle
recovery times. We'll also discuss the importance of cholesterol awareness
(13:31):
and give everyone a helpful primer. And with that, let
us welcome doctor Jim Leavell to the Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Good day to you, Jim, Good day.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
How you doing, doctor Bob.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
I'm doing well. Great to hear your voice. I just
wanted for full disclosure let the audience know that doctor
Lavelle is one of my postgraduate education teachers. So we
see one another at conventions and posiums and so forth,
and we love having him on the show. He's one
of our favorites because he can really bring it folks
(14:06):
when it comes to health related news, and you'll find
that out shortly. Jim, let's begin with the question. Most
of us know that the Kyola guarde kyla age garlic
extract has been one of the leading cardiovascular subments available
now for fifty years. My audience is clearly up to
speed on that. But for those who are new to
(14:29):
the show, can you please give them a thumbnail sketch
of really what we're talking about here?
Speaker 3 (14:36):
Sure? Yeah, so, I mean kyolic age garlic extract. What
makes it unique is that when you age it, it
changes the composition of the garlics. So first of all,
you get rid of the odor. So if you're you know,
one of those people that's sensitive to garlic, when you
eat it and you know you have a little bit
of that stinking rose effect that no longer occurs. Most
(14:56):
importantly is that the new compounds that are made for
aging the garlic have had over nine hundred publications on
them and they support everything from lowering blood pressure. Multiple
double mind randomized placebo control crossover trials helped to reduce
vulnerable plaque, which you know, if you're familiar with coronary
(15:17):
artery scores out there listening. It helps to reduce vulnerable plaque.
And if you were on a stat and already and
you took age garlic, studies showed that it reduces the
rate at which you will plaque. It helps to support
building up your antioxidant status, It helps with detoxification status,
and it helps to improve the types of lipids that
(15:39):
your body are making. Because cholesterol is kind of a
broad term. We want to make good cholesterol subfractions and
not the bad ones. And so you know, in essence,
I look at age garlic extract is probably one of
the most important so number one killer's heart disease. So
this is one of the most important supplements people can take.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Now, Jim, most people might be they may be saying
to themselves, well, I don't have plaque. Nobody's mentioned athosclerosis
to me, so why do I need to worry about this?
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Yeah? Exactly. So I think you know an ounce of prevention, right,
it's you know, if you don't have if you have
a clear scan and your blood pressure isn't currently slightly elevated,
and if you don't feel like your circulation is a
little bit off, and you haven't been told that you're
you have a little bit of fat accumulating on your liver,
(16:36):
or you haven't been told that you know you're pre diabetic,
well then yeah, then it's totally prevention. But otherwise, but
just I think what I just said fits about three
quarters of the US population. But if you're not an
exactory of any of those things, well then you know,
take it for prevention, especially the new study. If you're fit,
(16:58):
it turns out a starlic extract on the Reed study
could be incredibly interesting to you. If you're super healthy,
you're out there exercising, and you have some interest in
improving the way that you can recover. So I think
it fits just about every one. I'm a huge proponent
for it, obviously been you know, speaking for Kyolic for
(17:20):
oh gosh two decades now.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
M yeah, well that's it. I understand there's been that
new research about age garlic extract that was presented earlier
this year at the seventh International Garlic Symposium in Munich, Germany.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
Absolutely was and I was there, so it was pretty interesting,
you know. I mean, you know, you get used to thinking, oh, wow,
yeah it's for heart health or you know, bone health
even or hey, it's going to help people that are
pre diabetic to build up there a dipping nectin levels.
But this was interesting because it actually showed that it
(17:58):
increased the volume of oxygen intake uptake, which is called
v O two max. So and then it also helped
in terms of LAC tape build up, and that meant
you're not going to be sore as long and you're
going to be able to recover faster, especially in middle
aged individuals. So you know, if you're really young, you're
(18:19):
twenty years old, you might not see a huge impact,
but once you're training and you're in your late thirties on,
this could have a tremendous impact. So you know, the
Reed study I think was really interesting. That kind of
makes a lot of sense, right, doctor Bob, because we
know that it improves peripheral circulation, so you get better
oxygenation because you're getting blood flow, you know, outter your
(18:44):
extremities better. But they actually measured this. I think it
was fascinating.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
You're listening to the sound of doctor Jim Laval, who
is a clinical pharmacist, author, Board certified clinical nutritionness and
heart health expert. He's bringing us up to date, ladies
and gentlemen on the latest research associated with consuming or
supplementing with Kyolic spelled KYO l I C Kyolic aged
(19:15):
garlic extract. Now they have various formulas available in health
food stores nationwide. You can certainly also find out more
about what they're doing and much of the elements we're
discussing here over their website Kyolic spelled ky O l
I C dot com. You can hit their website for that.
(19:39):
You can also call their toll free number if you
have questions as well at eight hundred four to two
one two nine nine eight eight hundred four to two
one two nine nine eight. You can also follow Kyolic
on Facebook at Kyo Life that's Kyo Life, and Instagram
(20:02):
at the Kyle Life. You can also find them, of course,
as I said, online and health food stores have it.
I mean, we have been talking about this topic, I
think doctor Levell and we're going to take a break
here shortly. I think we've been talking about this topic together.
I don't know how many years, but it's been a lot,
and there have been so many people who have benefited
(20:25):
through this. But when we come back, because some people
might say to themselves, yeah, garlic's great. I like the
taste of garlics. So garlic's good, I'll just eat more
of it and kind of miss the message behind. Why
it is that a concentrated form of garlic that removes
the odorant but yet concentrates it makes it even that
(20:47):
much more therapeutic is important and I want you to
cover that when we come back from this break, sir.
All right, ladies and gentlemens stand by. We'll be back
with our special guest, pharmacist doctor James Leval. I'm doctor
Bob Martin. Are you waiting on a line next take?
Speaker 3 (21:04):
Are you waiting for the perfect nights?
Speaker 2 (21:07):
Are you waiting to the time is night?
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Why don't you want to learn to deal with don't
you want to take the wheel and steer it?
Speaker 2 (21:19):
Don't you be another man?
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Why what are you in?
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Well, you're tuned into the largest and longest daring radio
health talk show in America, barn and in large part
thanks to you, ladies and gentlemen. And if you think
this is an important show that maybe your family members,
your friends, your co workers, your neighbors ought to be
able to tune into the program. Certainly a way to
(21:48):
refer them is to listen to your radio station locally
where you're at, jot down the call letters of the station,
whether it's an AM r FM station, the frequency on
the dial time of and just pass out on to
as many people as you know, helping them to find
health and wellness. Naturally, that's what we do. We're here
each and every week for that very reason. We've got
(22:11):
a special guest with us. We'll return to doctor James Laval.
He is a board certified clinical nutritionist, heart health expert,
pharmacist and author of many books. And here's some really
great news. You've probably heard the expression nothing in life
is free. Of course, we've all heard that. Well it's wrong.
(22:32):
It's wrong today, especially because the good folks over at
Wacanaga of America, the makers of a wide variety of
quality chiolic supplements, which happen to be the ones we're
talking about right now, are offering Doctor Bob Martin Show
listeners free supplement samples and valuable money saving coupons on
(22:52):
their supplements. So if you would like to receive the
very supplements we're talking about right here, a free sample
of chiolic supplements for either herd health, their cardiovascular formulations,
immune support, or stress and fatigue relief simply go over
to their website at kyolic KYO l i C dot com,
(23:15):
Forward slash Radio to request your free nutritional supplements, samples
and money saving coupon offers no obligation whatsoever. Kyolic KYO
l I C dot com, Forward slash Radio and thank
you to Coyolic for offering that up for our audience.
(23:36):
Right back to our conversation with doctor James laval Jim.
Before we took the break, I asked, you know, some
people are thinking, oh, garlic's great. I've heard it's super
for a lot of things, the common cold, maybe other things.
But why don't I just ratchet up my level of
consuming it? What is Can you compare and contrast the
difference between eating garlic and taking the either encapsulated form
(24:00):
or the liquid age garlic extract.
Speaker 3 (24:03):
Yeah, I mean, look, eating garlic is good, and eating
garlic is good for you, but it doesn't have the
same properties. When you age the garlic, a new compound
gets formed called s Alleel system, and there's other compounds
that come out of it as well that support your
immune system. You know, it's you know, phenomenal what happens
(24:26):
in the transformation, So you can eat all the garlic
you want, but it will not have the same effect
as what we just discussed in that middle aged you know,
endurance athlete study where improvement and VO two max occurred,
the lactate threshold improved, muscle fatigue went down, or all
the heart health benefits that I mentioned earlier, where you
(24:48):
make better lipids, they're healthier, you reduce plaque risk. You know,
you you know, you create a whole other group of
benefits that occur when you take aged gark and it's
there's only one company that's done that. It's Walker Naga,
and they're the ones that have supported I mean, you'd
(25:10):
be hard pressed to find another nutraceutical that has as
many publications and ongoing research as age garlic extract.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
Right.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
A lot of a lot of times companies will have
one or two studies they've got they're doing publishing five
six studies a year in most cases on their compounds
from leading universities. That's the other piece. So whether it's
UCLA Department of Cardiology with doctor Matthew Budoff, University of Florida,
(25:40):
I mean, these are major institutions that are actually showing
the benefit to it.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
I've lost track of how many they've done. In fact,
I don't know if I can count that high anymore.
I mean, that's there's that many studies. The last time
I think we were on the show, Jim was like
nine hundred plus. Am I wrong?
Speaker 3 (25:56):
Yeah, there's nine hundred plus publications and literally hundreds of studies,
I mean studies that have been published. And as you know,
doctor Bob, it is not easy to get study published,
nor to get it published in a leading journal. I
mean they're scrutinized heavily so that the study and the
way it's designed shows that there's real benefit to this.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Muh. Doctor Jim Levell is with us, Ladies and gentlemen.
You can find out more about this topic and access
the website of Kyolic at kyolic dot com. Kyolic dot
com course Kyolic Gauge Garlic formulas are available at local
natural health retailers nationwide or online. Jim, can you share
(26:43):
some of the scientifically backstrategies for managing and mitigating the
muscle soreness ensuring that our listeners can stick to their
exercise routines because a lot of them, you know, they
get sore and then you know they're desired needs to
get in shape or lose weight just goes down the
drain because they now say, wow, it's I'm too sore,
I'm not going back to the gym, and then of
(27:05):
course their long term fitness goals also go down the
drain too.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
Yeah. Well, as you what you and I are huge
advocates for it is that you know you've got to
be able to hydrate yourself. Well, make sure that you're
getting you know, plenty of water, and I would even
say if you're exercising regularly, think about taking electrolytes. Most
people get low and magnesium, and magnesium helps get rid
of that lactate as well. You can roll out with
(27:31):
a foam roller. That's another one that's really good from
the exercise side. Get a good massage is important. Turns
out that a little bit of caffeine will actually reduce
your soreness by almost fifty percent, So a cup of coffee,
not a gallon, that can be really helpful. And then
you know people taking beat you. So it's another one
(27:51):
that helps improve circulation, in conjunction with taking the h
garlic extract of course, So there's a lot of things
that you can do, but I think one of the
most important aspects is you know, when you're exercising, watch
that you don't overtrain. I mean, I think it's one
thing that a lot of times people get, you know,
they if they're training really hard and they're very sore. Hey,
(28:13):
you know what, maybe that's a day to do a
lighter walk, get on that roller, hydrate well, stretch a little.
Just don't keep pushing and pushing.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Now, I want to clarify something Jimmy said. Little caffeine,
uh help helps with recovery. I just did a segment
on how Starbucks has just rolled out their pumpkin lattes
which are loaded, and teenagers that are consuming it are
becoming depressed. So jim don't rain on my party over
here with that news.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
You No, I'll tell you what right now, you are
one hundred percent right. I'm talking about black coffee. I mean,
not the double pump, double whip, triple sugar, extra grande,
whatever they're called. I don't even know it's trick called, yeah,
but not that it's you know, it really is interesting
how that gets in the way of U something that's
(29:06):
positive and I'm not. And look, we also have to
keep in mind that there are some people that don't
tolerate caffeine. So if you're one of those folks that
you drink any caffeine at all and your body doesn't
process it and it keeps you up at night, well
you're not a candidate for that. But you can, you
can roll, you can, you can, you know, go get
a massage. You you can take iola gage garlic extract,
and you can hydrate yourself really well, especially make sure
(29:29):
you get that magnesia and then you especially if you're
exercising regularly.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
All right, great information, folks. We're talking with doctor Jim Leval, pharmacist, author,
clinical nutritionist. You can find Kyoa Gauged garlic extract supplements
health food stores nationwide. You can also go to Kyolic
ky O l i C dot com. We're gonna come
back with Marv conversation with doctor Laval. Stay with us.
(29:54):
You're tuned into the Doctor Bob margin Show.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
So so good.
Speaker 4 (30:11):
I'm a bossom number summencible, the one never singles a
I don't.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
I'm today day, healthy and happy. Welcome and welcome back
to this hour of the Doctor Bob Martin Show. We
thank you for tuning into the program. Today. Our special
guest with us is doctor Jim Laval. He's a pharmacist
clinical nutrition is heart health expert and author. And we're
on the topic of aged garlic extract and how it
(30:54):
continues to show through science how effective and how important
it is for human beings to consume it. Now, if
you want to know how, doctor Jim Leval is so
far ahead of most healthcare providers and particularly his colleagues,
I'm going to be talking about a subject next hour
about how eggs are cooked and how there are unexpected
(31:19):
effects that can impact your health with ratcheting up cancer
depending on how you cook your eggs. Now that might
seem new to you right now, and the National Institutes
of Health are talking about it, these oxy steroles. But
I remember at least five years ago at a dinner
(31:42):
meeting at Waucanaga of America at the Paradise Hotel during
a symposium, doctor Jim Levell our guest getting up and
talking about if we don't cook eggs correctly and we
put too much heat to them, it will denature them
and it will cause all kinds of health race. This
was five years ago, folks. This guy that you're listening
to right now was way out in front of this
(32:04):
and here they are today talking about it five years later.
So congratulations on that, doctor Laval.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
I appreciate that. Well, I'm always looking for the latest
information and trying to dig it up as early in
the curve as possible.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
I thought that was great. Okay, let's get to the
next question. We urge all of our listeners and followers
the speaking of cholesterol. Cholesterol awareness should be key as
a components to everyone heart heeld strategy. How important is
cholesterol education because there's a lot of misinformation out there,
as you well know.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
Yeah, it's incredibly important. I think people, you know, they
still think that, oh, I just have to get my
cholesterol numbers, and they get their basic cholesterol number and
then maybe they get their LDL and HDL and treglysa
ride and hey the cholesterol number didn't look too bad.
Hey you're good to go. But the problem is it's
the fractions of cholesterol that are the problems. So you
(32:59):
can have lipoproteins like apo lipoprotein B, which if that's high,
that is directly linked to reducing your longevity quotient I
meaning how long you're going to live, as well as
lipoprotein little A, And it turns out that you know,
when you take H garlic extract, it will improve not
(33:22):
only your cholesterol levels, because you know, studies show about
a seven to ten percent reduction in your total cholesterol level,
but it also helps to reduce those bad actor lipids
like aphilepoprotein B, lipoprotein little A, and it also helps
in terms of oxidized LDL. So for your listeners, you
can think of it as cholesterol that's rusted when it's
(33:43):
oxidation is rusting and so it's damaging the cholesterol, the
cholesterol that is bored its way into the inner lining
of your artery because when you're making bad act or lipid,
you're also making smaller lipids and so they bore in
there and then your body is under oxidator. Then you're
not eating enough vegetables, you're not getting in healthy fruits,
(34:04):
you're not taking antioxidants, and so therefore you end up
under a heightened oxidative stress and that's going to increase
that risk for plaquing those arteries. So it's really important
that people understand their lipids. Go and get a cholesterol test,
ask for an advanced lipid test if you really want
to understand you said that person that said, hey, I
(34:26):
don't have any plaque. Yeah, but if you have those
kind of particles, that's a problem. And by the way,
heart attacks occur forty percent, you know, you know, literally
forty percent of the time. It's not even due to cholesterol,
but it could be due to inflammation in your arteries,
which is a feature when you look at those advanced
liptid particles.
Speaker 2 (34:47):

now to be obese by two thousand and thirty, and
you know that that's a big number. Uh. And then
getting that exercise you can you know, even if you
do thirty minutes of moderate exercise, take a brisk walk
(35:42):
five times a week to six times a week, that
can dramatically reduce your heart risk. And then of course
other things like avoiding cigarettes are obvious, but even environmental burden.
You look at the kind of things that you've got
on your household. Are you're using natural you know, cleaning
your for your house, are you using air filtration? All
(36:03):
of those things are important. And then obviously use hgarlic extract.

oh four, that's probably one of the more popular ones.
