Speaker 1 (00:00):
The zity in podcast Network.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Hello, Hello Hello Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary,
Gary too.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
That's that's so people can't if I'm on a flight, Yeah,
and people recognize me, they can't drop the pictures of
their dicks.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I would be you he dropping a picture of my
dick to Gary Gary Gary, though, I'd be like this guy's.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
As to be fair that I started this thing a
few years ago, and yeah, I was on airplanes and
we just started, you know, when you're bored for three hours,
just started randomly are dropping funny pictures. And then but
my phone was called like Elliott g Leave's phone, so
I changed it to Gary Gary, Gary.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
You were there in plane sight.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
I was on a flight once, Snakes on a plane
and someone kept air dropping the entire plane a picture
of blue waffle.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Oh yeah, and.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
Just you could see as it like just hit different
people on the plane, like just the disgust and shock.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
It was so bad.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah, I mean, my favorite one was we had an
uber driver who was a laughing yoga coach, you know
where you just sort of have fits of laughter you
want to release. And then we found his Instagram and
it was just him holding up a pile of fruit
and vegg. So we screenshotted it and we were completely
really hungover, and then we got into the plane and
we tried to air drop it for about three hours

(01:23):
on and off, and I reckon. Maybe one hundred people
accepted the picture of our driver holding.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
They didn't know he was your driver, just a random
guy holding produce.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
Well, yeah, imagine she's on a plane and your board.
You know, I love.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
It, especially because you're expecting a dick pic and then
it's a guy holding.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
From Imagine how many times that Uber driver people would
get in and go, God, you look familiar.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
I got heir dropped your This is not even this
is not even the interview stuff.

Speaker 5 (01:57):
I thought we started this.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
I think this is the interview. I think that's all
Example is time for.

Speaker 5 (02:01):
Yeah, you have to start with this and then introduce
me at the end.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, yeah, we'll make it a mystery interview. Huge news
that minooka Farm Symphony in the Domain twenty twenty five
has been expanded. The new and improved lineup now includes
Basement Jack's Drude is on the lineup and Elliott John
Gleave aka Example and he's on the line with us
now cure Example.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
My Hey, Dan, I thought that we just did the
best part of the interview before we started.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah, we've been talking for about five minutes.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
That was my favorite interview I've done for a long time.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Your favorite interview that hasn't gone on?

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, what are we doing here, guys?

Speaker 5 (02:40):
Yeah? What do you want to talk about? Apart from
what we're talking about before?

Speaker 2 (02:43):
I wanted to talk about the fact that I have
been listening to your music for about fourteen years and
I didn't realize that your name is Elliott gleave E
g G Example. Oh my god, pity the penny has
just drop, has just had our producer team who has
her hands on here.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Most people hear the name Example just go it's got
some big hits. I'm not going to question this ship name.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
Yeah. Yeah, And then they find out the meaning of
it and they're like.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
So much sense you are and I'm sure you and
this is not news to you. But our producer, not
that we needed it put together, always puts together a
cheat sheet of information for us before the interview, and
she couldn't get any information on you because you can't
just write Example into Google.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
So yeah, yeah, you have to put Example rapper. But
sometimes you get examples of a rapper.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
That's what they got. They got example of like wrights
free rap music that you can use in your videos.

Speaker 5 (03:42):
Oh nice, Yeah, maybe that's what I'm in the wrong business.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
It's good.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
You're quite elusive on Google, which I think maybe.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
You're the only person that is.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
You are coming back to New Zealand this summer, which
is excellent. You've been to New Zealand a few times.
I think you played R and V before, haven't you.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
I have been, so my history and my brief history
of NZ is I came to Rhythm and Vines. Yes,
I played like headline shows in Auckland, christ Church.

Speaker 5 (04:11):
Well, I've been to Eden.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
You've been all over and you remember the place names,
which is very impressive.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I've got I've got a spreadsheet of all the gigs
I've ever done.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Okay, in your mind, she's been going.

Speaker 5 (04:25):
Since yes, especiallyet.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
In my mind it's been going since two thousand and four.
Is everything from the city, the venue, the capacity, the
ticket price, defeat so I can look back and see
when I was no way fifty quid, when I was
getting paid silly money, and back to where you know,
I feel like I'm mostly on an upward curve again.

Speaker 5 (04:48):
Now that's good.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
But yeah, I've been to I've played seventeen times.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Seventeen times. You are more than familiar. There's always something
that reminds you of the play. So what do is
when you go in your mind you go to New
Zealand and specifically Auckland, what comes to mind for you? Example?

Speaker 5 (05:06):
Oh, well, see, I've got some really good mates in Auckland,
so I think of them.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
But I just think there's this sort of care free,
fun loving no ship attitudes.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Who are your friends in Auckland because we'll definitely know them?

Speaker 5 (05:20):
Uh this is about twelve.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Yeah, I just it reminds me a lot of when
I go to Ireland and Scotland. It's sort of like this.
The mentality of people in n Z reminds me of
when I go to Scotland and Ireland. Is it sort
of like they're just further energy and just that down
to her and takes no ship.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
I like it.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
We've got good beard here right example, we've.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Got amazing ban to I mean, I live in Brisbane
and I'm here for my kids because they go to
school it and I'm here for the weather.

Speaker 5 (05:49):
But end Z is just you know, it's magical.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
I've done the Bunges in Queenstown, I've done the skiing,
I've into Hobbit.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
And done everything.

Speaker 5 (06:00):
That's all.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
That's all we've got, that's all we've got to offer.

Speaker 5 (06:02):
Yeah, it's pretty much out to you. I've just lifted
the whole thing. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
I thought we were talking about the gig at the domain.
It's actually a tourism guy.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Yeah, they're gonna love it, Benzi tourism. We're gonna love it.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
I'm always interested to know, like the food that sticks
out that the times you have been here. I always
ask people, what is the food item that sticks out
to you that you remember?

Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yeah, you guys, for some reason, I don't know why.
I have incredible Asian fusion restaurants.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Baby shout out. Pontibi Road one of my favorites.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Yeah, you guys have so many amazing places and they're
all Asian on.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
And like, no I've been.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
I think I've been to like eighty nine countries and like,
usually all I ever see is the airport, the gig
and the hotel. Yeah, but I get to often eat
at the nicest places. But having been back and forth
to and Z obviously. I'm just across the pond now
in Brisbane. You guys just do Asian fusion better than
anyone else.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
I have to agree with you.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
I did nine countries. What's the worst country you've performed on?

Speaker 5 (07:05):
What's the worst country I've performed?

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Yeah, a hard question.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
Yeah, I'm glad. I'm glad this hasn't been filmed.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
This would be like a viral real, right, I don't
know if the worst country in terms the worst gig
or like the state of the country.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Country and the dictatorship that you Yeah, no, what country
did you have your worst experience?

Speaker 3 (07:28):
And to be honest, I've played there about twenty five times,
but you buy for me, it's just a bit soulless.
It's like there's no energy, there's no culture, there's no
you know, it's just yaha, beaches and.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
Shocking miles and tax avoiders.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
And it's just like you don't get me wrong.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
Someone offers do the right amount. I'll happy to go
back to buy in someone.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Wait, we're willing to relocate this radio.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
I've actually been there sometimes on stage. I've been there
so many times and just said, can you look wake up?

Speaker 5 (08:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Exactly, they can they can though, because they've got you tonight,
they heard David Gitta last night, and they've got the
Black Eyed Pays including Fergie tomorrow night, so they've gone everyone.
You know, it doesn't make sense.

Speaker 5 (08:21):
I find that going to the UAE.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
I just like the reason that people go to that
sort of part of the world. I think a lot
of the time is for money, and therefore you don't
get the best vibes. But you know, like the places
I found, like apart from my island of Scotland and
and z as I've already said, when I've been to
like Lithuania, Latvia Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, these places are just

(08:47):
so a lot of them have been.

Speaker 5 (08:49):
Through recent troubles and turmoil.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
So I guess that always, you know, brings out the
best of people in terms of just living life to
the fullest. Yeah, for sure, even like one, you know,
getting to play those places, they just they almost like
they can't believe you're there, and I'm there just something
I'm not that much a big deal, but they hear
your songs on radio or whatever, and then you turn
up and then.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
They're appreciative that you came.

Speaker 5 (09:13):
The appreciative Yeah, I mean I've played four gigs in Ukraine.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Right, okay before the war.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Yeah, not recently, no, But honestly, it's just unbelievable response,
Like the energy.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
That's amazing.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
You know where people are just so apprecive where and
that's what you want.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
With Miami or Jubaia's just a bit fake and then
they're a bit spoilt by it all.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
You know, we are appreciative here. Nobody comes to New
Zealand anymore. We got skipped by Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo,
Billie Eilish, everyone pretty much.

Speaker 5 (09:44):
So I feel like z is just everyone who makes
drummond bass now.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yess yeah, yeah, And the Wilkinsons that come here.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
And like Justin Bieber over there, yes he is.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
And knit Sky is like justin Timberlake and they come
here and they go, holy shit, I am so famous
in this country.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Becky Hill is our Beyonce pretty much.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
Yeah. Yeah, well but I'm coming back. Yes, I love
it every.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Time this gig that you're performing. We've gone a long
way from the gig. Let's get back to the gig.
It is phenomenal. It's the third year that this gig
is happening in the domain. You won't have played in
the domain before, I'm sure, unless you did Christmas Carols
in the park. That's what it used to get used for.
Now it has this huge dance music festival and every
year you're going to fricking love this show. At the

(10:33):
same time, the backdrop to this is your country and
our country are currently locked in a very heated battle
in the America's Cup. It's Great Britain versus New Zealand.
The All Blacks are going to play England at twicken Them.
I know you're in Brisbane, but they're going to your
motherland to play England later on this year, so there's
a rivalry going on. Would you, if we can organize
it when you're here, be willing to turn your back

(10:54):
on your country and don if not perform in an
All Blacks jersey.

Speaker 5 (11:01):
Put all That's Jersey on anytime. Yes.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
I'm just a massive fan of like amazing athletes and
amazing teams and an amazing sport. Happily with other I'm
a Fulham flan, so you're never going to see me
in a Chelsea shirt.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Yeah, okay, that's fair enough, that's fair enough. Instantly, Yeah,
you'll instantly win the crowd over. They'll just go berserk
for it.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Well, why don't you guys come back, We'll do a
follow up interview and then you can provide me with
the deal.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
That's a good deal, fantastic, that's going to be excellent,
it's going to be very good. To be slightly more
resistance to that, but it was great.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
He was like, yeah, I'm on board that, I say,
I'm king I want to ask because obviously Minoka Farm
Symphony in the domain, it's truly one of the greatest
events we have here in this country, a full symphony orchestra.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Have you ever played with that behind you before?

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Well, so I've already done Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth with
right this symphony crew. So I've I've I come on
with my DJ tens in. So I'm on the mic,
you know, shouting, rapping, singing all my all my songs.
Most people most I think most people call it a set,

(12:13):
you know, getting the crowd sort of riled up, and
then the orchestra come on and just bang out. I've
watched the show a few times now, just obviously like
covers and interpretations of all your favorite dance classics and
the conductor Conductress.

Speaker 5 (12:32):
She's incredible SG.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
And then you know, obviously everywhere I've been so far,
there's been a different orchestra in each city, but you know,
essentially the same show. And then there's obviously these vocalists
that come on. I've been coming on at the end
of every set and performing kickstarts. And I looked behind
me and I'm like, I've played with the band before,
and I've played with like a string quartet and you know,
doing live lounges and stuff, and there's like forty seven people.

Speaker 5 (12:57):
Behind me were way more talented than me.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
I don't know about that. You're a bloody triple threat.
What do you think is your favorite instrument out of
all of them?

Speaker 5 (13:06):
I love the timpany quickly.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
You know, when you see those guys with the big
bass drums around them and there's.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
A yeah, yeah, yeah, I know the thing. Yeah it's
a big single drum or, it's a sid of drums.

Speaker 5 (13:24):
Yeah. I just love the timpany.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Yeah, you took over one in my mouth.

Speaker 5 (13:32):
Anyone whoever came up with.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
The name, anyone who's stuck with playing the obo outside
of high school, I just respect to school on the bus. Yeah,
I'm like, how did you get through high school and
you're still here and you're playing the Obo?

Speaker 1 (13:46):
Good on you.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Yeah, if you go if you're like, oh, yeah, I
was the clarinet state champion, that sounds amazing. If you're like, oh,
it's the jazz flute state champions, I bet they don't
word the ogent. And then if you're like, obo state champion.

Speaker 5 (14:01):
They're like, well, what was your aftergaints? Yeah? Two other people?

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yeah, yeah you think gets you lost your virginity at
forty what Hey, we're so excited for this. This show
is phenomenal. It's great to have you on the lineup.
Thanks for chatting with us this afternoon.

Speaker 5 (14:22):
And I'll see you then.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Yeah, and we have you all blacks Jersey ready you.

Speaker 5 (14:25):
Have it ready man, Thanks for this guys.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
That's example. He's on the lineup for Minoca Farm Symphony
in the domain twenty five Change the Way You Kiss Me.
