(00:02):
Saulisbury. Okay, let's do this. Sean Salisbury, The USC Truths,
longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury, BryanLima, go Lobos, this is the
Sean Salsbury Show. Is Josh Haderbroken? I guess we're supposed to say
(00:29):
it's early. That's usually the waywe all respond the first twenty five games
of a season or what have you. I I don't know if he's broken.
He sure hasn't looked the same sincethe very opening of the season when
he came out there, when BingoBango Bongo struck out the side. He
hasn't looked that same on a consistentbasis. Since I think we all assume
(00:53):
when a guy's taken, when youget what is considered by many accounts as
good a closer as there is inbaseball, and you go get him and
spend a lot of money, youjust assume I did that, He's just
going to dominate every single time out. But when we say he broken,
So has Bregman broken? You don'tr last night, I know, but
my point. You get my point? Yeah, I mean, if somebody
(01:14):
starts, so was Ronald Lacuni broken? I wonder what the FASE fan base
to think about him because he isI mean his normal. Well, he
hit the ball he had to seehe smoked the ball over the fence last
night. But foul. That wasa home run that went foul on one
of his bats when it was agreat at bat against AARRAGEDI and it was
in the second inning. I meanit was like fifty to twelve pitch or
(01:34):
whatever. Back kept fouling him offand eventually drew the walk. But he's
not broken. No, So mypoint is, do my feelings on Josh
Hater are. I can tell youthis. I don't think it broke him,
but something's cracked right now. Idon't know if it's mechanical flaw.
It's hard to find the mechanics onthat guy because he comes from you know,
he's at less than three quarter sidewinder, you know what I'm saying.
(01:56):
So you can't you don't get theyou know, mechanics if it's you're watching
Verlin as mechanics or somebody like GarrettCole that you see in the past,
or go back to the Bob Gibson'sord, those guys who don't waste motion,
whatever, the mcken nolan Ryan, you know, we don't have any
guys listening to the ball, youknow, their glove and ball over the
and ball hand over their head anymorebecause too much energy being and Nolan right
and then a high leg kick right, all those things. So I don't
(02:17):
know if it's a mechanical flaw. You know, we were at Steve Shark's
breakdown break Down Hunter Brown yesterday andit was it makes complete sense. So
I don't know. I don't know. What tells me is when you're getting
raked like he is, that theball's flat, that there's no jump to
it, there's no late life. And he throws hard, as we know,
(02:38):
but you can throw as hard asyou want, but if there's no
movement, you know, running awayor down or running in on somebody,
And maybe that's I mean, Ihaven't charted every pitch for Josh Hetter.
I just when he pitches, heseems too easy to hit for a guy
who is as dominant a closer asthere's been, you know, in quite
some time. He's really that good. So I don't I don't being Brokes
(03:00):
not something. I guess I'm tryingto talk myself into him being still Josh
Hader. Yeah, and I'm sureas hell not ready. I've seen closers
come to this and they struggle, and all of a sudden they pick up
their tempo and start roland as theseason goes on. But there's there's something
not right. And it could simplybe I mean, we give it.
We don't do this for uh pictures. We want to do it for hitters.
(03:23):
Slow start. Guess what that means. We're in trouble as opposed to
a slow hitter. It's like,oh, it's early, it's cold out,
so we don't give them a chance. St we just consider other guy.
Yeah, what happened? Well,I know what we need to do
for Josh Hader. She look atthe back of his baseball card. Right,
I watch how many people they'll calland say this was a terrible move
in the off season. Watch,Oh, I say, it's already coming.
(03:46):
Oh I saw, I saw hegot added into the Why did we
sign Jose Bray you, why didwe sign Rafael Montaro? And why did
we sign Josh Hader? I sawthat, and the math was up with
all of their contracts already, yes, already, and we haven't we haven't
hit the twenty five game mark yet, right, but because when a closer,
it's like I've said before, whena closer doesn't close it out,
(04:11):
it's almost feels like there's more focuson them because they're getting such a specialized
role. They don't get for it. Bat's a game where you can struggle
three of them, strike out threetimes, and then hit a home run
and you're back. When you're acloser, and if you're going well fine,
we just expected when you all ofa sudden drop off. We are
looking for every reason in the worldwide. Does he look the same,
(04:31):
No, I just it looks tome like I'm just on TV. And
when I say, I mean Ifollow closely mechanics and baseball and I love
it and watch a lot of it. It just looks to me when he
is at his best, there wasdifferent hop and movement, late movement and
life. It just feels like it'sa it's a flat pitch. And we
hear guys talk about all the timethat like a John Smoltz we said,
(04:53):
Steve's sparks talk about it is whenit doesn't matter what you throw, I
don't care if it's a if yourcurveball all cutter, change up, if
it all comes in flat fastball.Guess what happens if those guys are sitting
on they'll hit it. And sothat right there is it just doesn't seem
like there's a lot of you know, that energy when you wake up you
(05:14):
kind of just get through your day. It feels like his pitching it's just
kind of trying to get through asopposed to when you go up there.
You knew that dominant when you steppedin the batter's box, your chances of
hitting Josh Hader were very slim, right you did. You had to,
You had to, You had todo something special with him. So do
I think he's broke? No,But I can tell you this something needs
a fixing and that can just beone adjustment as mechanics or dare we say
(05:39):
he's tired? I don't want tohear that. I mean, but we
but we do like to say thatabout everyday players, right we do.
It's crazy we pictures get looked adifferent maybe because it's the lack of appearances
they get, but over the courseof a year as opposed to an every
day player. But I'm trying tomanifest that this isn't broke. But I'll
tell you what he's getting raked toomany times for him right now. And
I get the people's concern, butI'm also not really willing to say this
(06:01):
guy's a bust, is a pigas a signing in the off season just
yet. He recorded one out lastnight, four hits, four earned,
one walk, one K, sohe went walk, he got, he
issued the walk, and then hegave up four straight hits and then he
gets old Matt Olsen out. Andwhen he got Matt Olsen out, that's
(06:23):
that's the hater. You looked atpainting two fastballs and then dropping off a
nasty slider that Olsen swings through lefty, lefty. Yeah, yeah, that
look that looked like normal Josh haters. There is no doubt. Here's the
problem. Though we see it oncehe's given us a chance. It's like
a good hitter when the runers inscoring position, we expect to get a
hit every time he comes to theplate, even though it's not possible.
And with hater, I don't know, Brian, I when I watch it,
(06:45):
it's like it was. It feelslike there's not a a I like
when you walk in there against closersand you almost feel as a hitter that
your chances are limited, not justfrom us watching. So it uh,
there's there's a lack of consistency anda lack of domination that you expect that
first. Like I said, hisfirst appearance here is an astro. When
(07:08):
he pumped it up there and wentthree strikeouts in a row, I thought,
yeah, was this a good one? But look but even then not
fair. I mean, we jumpright out and we already said it,
and we said it, but whenyou get the seven, eight, nine,
it's especially big. More game over. Yeah, good morning, good
afternoon, good night. It's done. And you know what, it's been
anything but that so far. Doyou know how many innings Seth Martinez has
(07:30):
already thrown this season? They aresix and twelve, so they're eighteen games
in. Every time I look up, he's warming up. Uh, he's
He's thrown more bullpen warm up sessionsto go on the mound than most starting
pitchers have over their three or fourstarts so far the season. It's crazy,
he's he's appeared for him to bea workhorse though. Eleven innings.
Yeah, it's crazy. It's creatinggames in he's thrown eleven innies. Well,
(07:55):
that's got to tell you something. And you know what that tells you?
Do I trust the other guys becauseI'm constantly using Seth Martinez. Secondly,
and issues from a distance, Imean how I would evaluate something like
that. And secondly, is wegot to get deeper. I need to
bypass him a few times where likeJavier's seventh you know, getting us to
(08:16):
the seventh inning, then it's whathe got through seven, right, right,
so you get that. Now we'retalking those guys need about two or
three games in a row where theydon't have to You don't have to mess
with Seth Martinez. I've heard thefatigue word mentioned here for three straight years
about pitchers and oh, Javier isgetting fatigued. Hasn't pitched this many innings.
We can't wear out a bullpen. Two years ago when they won the
(08:37):
World Series, a bullpen and thepitching staff was ridiculous. And so if
that's the case about we got toprotect you from wearing them out. Seth
Martinez asked, needs a quick Theyneed to sit him in that in that
put him in the dugout, notin the bullpen, and say you're not
don't you dare even walk out tothe bullpen tonight. You're watching the game
from in here because we don't needyou tonight or tomorrow. And that's coming
(09:00):
upon starting pitching score more runs, which they didn't do last night. And
that's another thing that's maddening. Butyou'll go hang out. The discrepancy between
they're bad and they're good is reallythere's a gap between it. They just
haven't gone out and played like eightstraight games of really just kind of solid
baseball. It's either we're not verygood at pitching, we're not very good
at hitting, depending on what dayit is. And then it's like when
(09:22):
you play them like on Sunday, like the Rangers did, it's like this
is a World Series team right somewherein the middle translations getting lost. So
yeah, man, Brian, Iseth Martinez. I'm telling you, when
all somebody's get up at the bullpen, you know it comes to your mind.
Now, Martinez Martinez, at thisrate, he's gonna have more You're
gonna have more innings than a startingpitcher. It gets twenty five starts as
(09:43):
a little hyperbolic, but still, hell, he'll pitch more innings and than
Lance mc colors will this year atthis stage, depending on or Garcia,
how long it takes to get themback. It's nuts that key, Well,
I got news for you, youknow what to It's not like he's
got the reputation of being a dominminute pitions. Good for him and his
gutsy He reminds me of the bullpensJP France from last year, who was
(10:05):
a starter, came in when youneeded him second, Just call Seth.
He's like Mikey and the Life Serialcommercial. He'll get it done. He'll
go out there and pitch. ButI can tell you this, this keeps
up around August, he'll be nogood to you at that point in time.
If we're going by what history tellsor what people tell. The experts
say of well, he'll get armedthe fatigual kick in. Well, if
(10:26):
that's the case, this Seth Martinezneeds some time off. Yeah, he
really does eleven innings already in eighteengames. Yeah, that's too much.
That's a lot, Yes, itis. It's a lot of appearances for
Seth Martinez. That showed me thatyour starters are not going long in ballgames.
Speaking of starters for the Astros, last night, Spencer Arraghetti getting his
(10:48):
second career start on the mount.Let's look at how he did. That's
next on Sports Talk seven to eighty. Back to the Sean Salisbury Show on
Sports Talk seven ninety Sport Your Asteroids, Your Rockets, Your Voice, seven
to ten, The First Pitch, six o'clock on Deck Show, Kaylyn Clark
(11:11):
drafting number one overall, and thew n B A Texans with an off
season workout program kicking off at NRGStadium. I mean, you're looking for
Josh Hatter to come back home?Isn't that the song? So how to
happen? That pictures? That wasyour reference? Dude, your early morning
(11:31):
when you close your eyes and squintand sing and sing to me, and
then when you don't know the words, it's still the most cloud. Then
you'll fuck into the where you goin thro the whole. I just got
say I love you, man.People probably think we're absolutely nut John,
(11:58):
Dude, you and I are thetype of guys that we go say,
Man, I gotta go get tothe guy, go see my psychologist,
which is fine, right, youknow, No, don't don't knock on
that two of us doesn't need Igot a therapist, says that's in the
radio. No, do you ismy thing, the reason why I don't
go in and see it. Bythe end of the hour, he'll be
laid on the count chair. Hesaid, I charged three hundred dollars an
(12:24):
hour for this whack chop. That'sso true. He'd say, three hundred
dollars an hour, bitch, getout of my office. It's up to
a grand hour. I'll have thatguy. You having to seek help.
So you say, I wonder ifpeople think we're whack chops. No,
(12:46):
I don't wonder if there's no moreCaptain obvious staying on the plane. Hey,
I got the two biggest guarantees onthe planet. Caitlin Clark's the first
pick and you and I an consideredwhack chops. Shocked. Oh man,
oh yeah, excuse me. Ican't fink right now. My therapist,
(13:11):
I swear, at one point,was like, you don't understand that's that's
that's not okay in life, Like, yeah, Sandra, I know,
that's why Why do you think I'mhere? Why I'm sitting on your damn
couch. Oh my gosh, again, I'm so glad she does not listen
to radio. Hey, Sean, that's not normal thinking, no crap,
(13:31):
I wouldn't need you. Okay,I'm sweating man. Welcome, Welcome to
show, Tripley, Good morning, what's up? Good morning, guys.
Triple already made his appointment after beingwith us for four months. Oh my
gosh, all right, whoa showsto the list of the braves. Harry
(13:56):
Getty got his second major league start. He gets the loss, only made
it through four I would say itwas a better start than his first one.
Let's see four innings, four hits, two and and runs, five
k's, two walks. It justseems like what I watched last night,
his out stuff was not there. No, but I'll tell you what I
(14:18):
did like he lived over around norwhen he had to ramp it up,
and he was living in the middleof the mid nineties a lot. I
mean, I know it wasn't along outing, but I felt like he
was around ninety two ninety three inhis opening start, you know what I'm
saying, where he was last night. He was pumping it up a little
couple more miles an hour. Itfelt like I don't know what the average
of every pitch was on his fastball. But we're still looking for him.
(14:39):
I think he's still trying to figureout what is his out pitch, and
he don't think he's got a lotto think about. Not only that,
you know what a lot of peoplethink it's an advantage, and for some
it is. But you know how, you grow up someplace here. He
went to high school here at SingleRanch, and you've been high you know,
(15:00):
been a high a great high schoolplayer, and all of a sudden,
now you're playing for that team localall your buddies. Not that you
want to be around friends, butI can tell you there's also an added
pressure. That family's there every game, your buddies are thinking about it.
You've got to be in the ticketbusiness be cause you don't think is high
school budiy say, man, you'rethrowing tonight? Can we come? And
it's great to have a rooting section. I don't know if that's how it
feels, but it is normal tosometimes say, man, it's too bad
(15:26):
I'm not about two states away,so at least I can focus because you
want to impressure you. I remembermy very first start in the NFL.
You know how it fell on?It fell on, came back home Minnesota,
play in the Rams in Anaheim,an hour from my house. How's
my first starting. Now we playedwell and we won, and I played
well that day, but I knowgoing into that week, part of the
(15:46):
distraction two or three days was tickets, how many of my high school friends,
my college buddies that are coming thatdidn't play, my family, and
so all those things that use upyour mindset. I got a job to
do still, so with him,I would understand you're trying to impress.
You know, your staff and yourteammates, and they can all tell you
that it doesn't matter, but itdoes. So it's a great advantage once
you settle in. Man, I'mplaying in my hometown, but for opposite.
(16:07):
For me, I finished my careermy last year was in San Diego,
my hometown. I wanted to finishthere. He gets to start here,
so which at some point it'll bean advantage. But he lived in
mid nineties. It was ninety fourninety five a lot, so I did
like that. But Brian, youhit it perfect. When I'm watching him
pitch, I think got an arsenal. He got you know, three or
four pitches, but hasn't perfected theone that's his outpitch just yet. Like
(16:30):
Javier. Now, damn that dougOn that that change ups devastating. But
what's been is outpitch, elevated fastballthat has late life on it and jumps
and you feel like it's ninety sevenwhen it's ninety two or ninety three.
So I think and I can understandthat two starts in, you're sitting here
going through your mind. Jackson Holidayfinally got a first hit. You don't
think this guy can rake. Hecan hit with the broomstick. But what
(16:52):
do you think he's thinking. Family'salways in the stand. I mean,
they're trying to see his son getthe first hit, supporting him. You
want that, his wife, allthose things. And finally, now,
don't be surprised if Jackson Holiday goeson a run. It's four hundred for
two months or a month, right, And the same thing here once he
figures out what his out pitches, and it's just command because you're mentally and
emotionally and physically overloaded this quickly intoyour career. Yeah, eighty seven pitches
(17:17):
in four innings. He spoke tothe media after the game last night and
talked about his album. I tryto treat every game the same. I
think, the more that I canstay in my middle, stay in my
process and kind of just make itmore about executing there between pitches. I
think that I get better results thatway. Obviously, when when you make
it into something bigger than it mightbe, a lot of times it's easy
(17:37):
to let the moment get big.And I feel like what I did a
good job of tonight was reminding myselfthat I wouldn't be here unless there was
a reason, and that I justneed to be myself and execute pitches in
those situations. It's a great pointthe moments we make them, so a
lot of times we borrow trouble andthose stressful moments never rear their head.
How you handle them, and whenthey do, you can handle him.
(18:00):
And also by saying you know thathe did a good job, that he
that he's here for a reason, that's exactly right. They didn't advance you
through this and put you in positionto come start a second game against Listen,
the dude's two starts have been againstthe Texas Rangers and the Atlanta Braves.
Welcome. Yeah, you know whatI'm saying. Of course, so
(18:22):
it's not gonna get a lot harderwhen it comes to hitters the guys you
face. So but I love itand I love that approach. It was
all humble but confident that he's herebecause he can pitch. Now, it's
just a matter of him commanding it, and he will. But uh,
finding that one pitch that your goto when everything else fails? Do you
have the one pitch? Okay, when your out pitch fails, what's your
(18:44):
second out pitch? So once itgets the first one, you can deal
the second one. But like ahitter, he gets that first win under
his belt of that first six inning, you know, three hits and gives
up one run or shuts him out. Then all of a sudden you say,
okay, now I know kind ofwho I am as you try to
figure it out. This is thisis part for the course for young pitchers
trying to figure out. Hell, there's guy who's been in the league a
while still trying to figure this stuffout. It ain't easy placing and he's
(19:07):
faced two, I mean two monsterlineups in his two starts. Yeah,
I can imagine that. Making yourmajor league debut. Oh, here you
go, here's the defending champs ofTexas Rangers. And oh, by the
way, your next start against theAtlanta Braves. Yeah, good luck.
No doubt with with the dudes inthis lineup. Ronal Occunyr Junior two hits
last night, Ozzy Albi's had one, Austin Riley three. Well, was
(19:30):
Austin Riley a good player? Yeah, he's pretty good. Yeah, really
good player. Yeah, let's see. I mean they've got dudes that are
Acuna is hitting two eighty eight,Alby's is hitting three seventeen, Austin Riley's
sitting two ninety two, Matt Olsenhitting two eighty six, Ozuna is hitting
three sixty five, Michael Harris issecond, hitting two ninety and their power
oh and by the way, JaredKellenick hitting three eighty seven. Yeah,
(19:53):
and their power surge ridiculous hasn't evenstarted yet though, as because Albi's is
capable of I mean he's he hita bunch of home runs the last couple
of years an MVP candidate. Ithink throughout the a lot of last year
early on especially, we know whatOzona can do. Olsen will hit you
forty. I mean, they're they'rethey're packed with power and they haven't even
(20:15):
that surge hasn't even begun yet,So stay tuned. Yeah, Oh,
they're pretty damn good. Yeap, all right, let's uh excuse me.
Let's look at this lineup for theHouston Astros. Offensively al Twove stays on
fire. That's next on Sports Talkseven ninety Yah, Sports Talk seven ninety
but also curt of Pro and theHouston Astros. Insert of Pro Cert of
Pro Painters is the official painting partnerof your Houston Astros. Winners begat winners
(20:41):
like being around each other and makingthings better and bringing everybody with them.
And sert of Pro, whether it'sa home or business interior X tier,
they will elevate it, they willelevate the optics, they will elevate the
quality of it. Let's say you'removing out of your home and you want
to make sure you sell and getthe price. You know how they always
talk about that presentation lawn everything. When people first see it, they see
(21:03):
a paint chob too, next tire, and when they walk in, boom,
paint job pops. That's if yourmovement, but if you want to
stay in for you, the qualitypainting help you choose the paints. They're
there to make sure that it's it'slocal, it's timely, and they're going
to paint your home the same waythey'd paint their own. All those things

nothing curt of Pro can't do tomake your home look better and to make
you happy with that quality painting. It's expensive to own a home and a

(21:52):
ninety of the ninety people Home foryour Home teams kicking off their off season
workout program. A couple of theplayers and head coach to Miko Ryan's spoke
to the media yesterday. We'll discussthat later on in the show. By
the way, who corrected us?Yeah, it was great, y K?
Why at K? Why my son? Yeah, I was a Royals
(22:15):
on his first start. Because Iremember the families in the stands and Julia
Morales was interviewing him, and theywere raking too. I mean they got
a decent lineup. I mean they'dbe the Braves on the surface, but
they hammered around Astro's pitching to thetune of well the Astros just can't go
there and win very often. Butyes, it was the Royals and the
Braves for Spencer Aarraghetty, not theRangers. You know what it is blue
(22:36):
uniforms. They kind of look likethe Rangers the way they were raking.
But yeah, that's that's exactly right. So thank you for that, for
that correction. Hey guess what, but who's counting right exactly? But thank
you for that. That's you're exactlyright and as much improved Royals lineup as
well as he as he was sayingthey hammered the Astros the entire series,
and they did, and they've gotsome really good young players on that roster.
(22:56):
To the point is, is thatSpencer Aragetty still looking for that outpitch
right, Yeah, and hopefully he'llfind it. Had one on here on
Twitter as well, So thank youfor that. Message is from a friend
who always let's see, we'll justtalking about I'll find out who it was.
Was talking about, why is uhjosh Hater in this game? Managers
(23:18):
making some strange decisions? Why wasJosh Hader in last night? Let's see
you work? He entered the game? What they were down three to one?
I believe, Yeah, just toget work. He's been in a
lot of non a lot of alot of or a handful. It feels
like a non safe situations this year, which you're trying to keep him out
of. Correct. Yeah, solet's see. I got to find out
who said it. I want togive credit. I always like to give
(23:40):
our peeps credit. Yeah. Goinginto that inning when Josh Hader came in,
they were, oh, it wasa two to one game? Oh
was Oh, then then that's thereason. Then there's the answer of the
reason. Why is it three?I just scored four? That's exactly right?
Okay, it was two one tillthe night they scored for right,
and it was it still two onewhen he entered. There you go,
(24:03):
so yes, So why would hebe in the game. The reason why?
You're trying to keep it close witha chance to win, that's why.
And I was you I thought itwas three to one, but oh,
it says this is Giants Insider podcastLet's See, and newspapers it's said,
hey, your new manager is makingsome weird decisions. Why is hater
in the game two? Why wouldyou close? I think, and that's
(24:26):
probably I mean, I think there'sthis misconception that the only time a closer
comes in is in the safe situation. Well, you'd like that, but
if you need to, you know, eke out a win and it's within
a runner two. I think evenat three to one, they'd probably put
him in. Brian, know, when it's four to one or five to
one, unless he hasn't had workin a handful of days, you would
not put him in. If heneeded work, he'd put him in.
But the game was close, andthat needs to be addressed as well,
(24:51):
no doubt. Seven one three, two one two five, seven ninety is
the number to join. Let's talkto miss Carroll. Miss Carroll, Good
morning, on and Brian, Goodmorning, Sean, Good morning. How
are you Miss Carrol? Okay,I'm fine now listen, my attitude still
says the same. Now. Thereality is they gotta get out of this
(25:19):
mental, non consistent hitting smut.Once they get out, look out Jack
because I'm telling you, Jose howTuv is heating up. The rest of
them are gonna do it, andwe're gonna look back on this. Oh
(25:45):
huh. They were six and twelve, Okay, now they're fourteen and something.
Well, hey, you know theygonna turn this around. It's a
mental thing and they got to getout of it all Raghetty. I am
proud of it. Why because hehas confidence and if he has the guts
(26:17):
to pitch like he did see ifwe had a got more offense, we
were the one shown up. Butit's too late for our Shoultar could have
water. Game two is tonight. We can bounce back. And I'm optimistic
(26:41):
with this team. And it's nota Spotterer. It doesn't have anything to
do with a spotder. He's anice man and everything like that. It's
a mental thing with the players. They have got the bus loose, and
when they bus loose, it's it'sgoing to be history. What you saying,
(27:06):
missus Sean Smary And I hope Ihope that matts mac as he can
let me go out the dollar dollnight and and I can come back saying,
hey, I told you so,you got it. Miss Carroll,
thank you the confidence she oozing fromfrom everywhere with her. She always liked
(27:26):
that and and I love it,and I'm with her on Spencer Araghatty.
I love the kid's guts and thereI think he I do and his family
should be proud of the way he'scoming out of here grinding. And I
know it hasn't the result hasn't beenwhat they've wanted. But I'm convinced that
the best I've ever seen at anythingthey've done in business or in sports learn
far more from getting knocked around andexperiencing some success. But the growth part,
(27:52):
and the constant growth in your gamer, in your business, or in
your livelihood or in your life comesfrom that, you know, getting knocked
off your feet a few times,or the unpaved road is I like to
refer to it. That's where youspend most of your time. And how
to get back to the paved roadis what we all want. And I'm
I'm rooting for him, and Ithink his family and you know, his
high school and those would be proudof the way he's going out there grinding
(28:14):
then learning, because it's a toughbusiness and tough to be successful anytime.
Let alone early in your career. But Miss Carroll's confidence, I mean,
I think there's a lot of mentalto this. There's some mechanical flaws on
the mound, and I'm sure, but there's a lot mental because what happens
when you when you're struggling, Brian, you grind a little more, right,
And maybe grinding more doesn't always meangrinding smarter. So yeah, and
if U and I hope Miss Carrollgets out to Dodger dog night. Who
(28:37):
Dodger dog? I'm saying, Dodgerdog, dollar dog. I'm sitting here
watching the Blue Jays and was thinkingabout O. Tani can't get anybody across
with runners in scoring position, youhave a tough time getting people across dollar
dog night. Yeah, even thoughif you haven't had a Dodger dog,
if you're out there, go getone of those two. Never happened?
Okay? Yeah? Good? NiceDodger Gilzzy. Huh, nice Glizzy,
nice gluzy be perfect for you. What's so? Is there something special about
(28:59):
a Dodger dog? Is that justgonna fits right perfectly in your mouth?
Oh? It does? Yeah,it's a good fit. Yeah. What
do you mean by it fits perfectlyin your mouth. It tastes good.
Uh huh. Yeah, So thereyou go. But dollar dog night,
I hope miss Carroll gets there andnothing like a good dollar dog pumping out
about eight of them between me andyou, you feel good about it?
Not right now? Not this early, too early for al No, I'll
(29:21):
knock down a hot dog at sevenam now again. Yeah, don't tell
me. Hmm. Interesting. Soare we are we? I don't want
to sound too critical here, butyou're going to but are we are we
like excited for a four innings froma rookie? No? No, no,
I'm excited. It's not the wordoptimistic, is I Okay, So
(29:48):
if he comes out and has nothingbut success, what's the first thing you're
going to say? We got it, We got the next Spencer Strider,
right right, That's why. Butthat's why he's at the big league level.
Yeah. But at some point intime, even even no matter what,
he will go through what I don'tknow Fromer did at times last year.
I'm talking about Vettras, what ChristianXavier did at times. We can't
get out of what the first handof a postseason. I just think that
(30:11):
yes, for our well, okay, short term, short term success is
a blast. What would you rafif I told you short term success or
long term consistency and success, butyou got to go through the struggles to
get there. You'll take the firstone, right. Nobody wants that.
We all want CJ. Stroud ona pitching mounts as a hitter. We
want it to look like it madeit look he did. That's outlier,
(30:33):
buddy. You know and I bothknow that ain't normal. And so no,
I don't think you're excited. Imean excited. Well, look he
gave us what eighty pitches in fourthings. No, but I do think
you see things along the way thattell you he's not backing down, which
is to me right now that opticis more important and that feeling for him
will sustain him longer than Oh,it looks good and he's getting some people
(30:55):
out. But I still don't knowhow mentally tough he is. I think
we're figuring it out that he's notgoing to back it. He may go
through struggles, but I think he'slooking forward to another start as opposed to
man, I'm not ready for this, and to me that's hugely important.
His eyes don't look big to me. He just looks like he's struggling to
find at times the consistency out pitchthat he wants with a second pitch that
(31:15):
gets people out. Yeah, it'slike I mean, when you preach baseball
from like a coaching perspective, it'sa game of failure. So you got
to take the small wins in everysituation. Whether you can go up there
and have a nine pitch at batand still strike out. But yeah,
that's a win of my book.Yes, that's a hell of an at
bat. You just didn't get theout some of you want, especially well,
you can hit the ball one hundredand ten miles off the bat and
he goes right to the short start. Is that a law? I mean,
(31:37):
yeah, you'd like to get itto fall in and you're they even
themselves out. Then you'll hit aone that you had to say, there's
no way that ball falls and youget a base hit. It's the same
thing with pitching. But I needto find out and like you said,
the small wins are really large wins, especially for young pitchers that know that.
Okay, I see this a littledifferent, and he's still trying to
figure out hitters. He probably doesn'teven know how to study hitters yet because
he's too worried about getting his gameright, which is normal as well.
(32:01):
It's gonna turn out fine for him. I'm more concerned about when they go
in how mentally and emotionally tough foryou and things, because you knew things
were gonna go bad for any whenI say bad, have an inning where
it's a little sideways, and hey, he'll get it worked out. And
I think these two starts so farfor him have been paramount in his growth,
(32:21):
even though it hasn't looked it withthe result. Yeah, and I
mean really when you look at theline outside of the pitch count getting up
eighty seven pitches, and I believeit was the second inning that was there
was the big inning where he gaveit was the third one against the Royal,
third inning against the Royal second inning, yas. Yeah, I mean
four innings, four hits, twoear and run, four hits against this
lineup. He can walk away feelinggood about some stuff. Mat Yeah,
(32:45):
there's no doubt about it. Ithink that. And once again, he's
here for a reason. And nowsome of it may be injuries, because
I mean, he probably wouldn't havegot to start if the whole staff was
healthy. Matter of fact, hewouldn't have but so in that part of
it, did you throw him intothe fire a little sooner? But off
by all accounts, his spring earnedhim an opportunity to come up here and
(33:06):
pitch, so good for him.Looks it seems like a lot of people
were kind of questioning why Josh Haterwas in the game. Joe Spott spoke
about why Josh Hater was in thatball game, Let's talk about it next
on Sports Talk seven ninety some warSean Salisbury on Sports Talk seven ninety where
Astro's in Rockets played and Real Texanstalk. Top of the ninth. Astro's
(33:30):
up two to one. Obviously,he gives up four runs, walks a
hitter, then gives up four straight. Did not pitch well. It's been
a struggle so far for Josh hadWell. Manager Joe Spott was asked why
he went with Josh Hader in thatball game, and this is what the
skipper had to say. You know, he's been you know, my freshest
(33:51):
arm, you know, from myguys from the bullpen. Right now,
so trying to I'm thinking about thenext two games before the off day and
you know, he's the guys thatusually comes in and shut the door down
in the ninth Okay, freshest arm, so that if that's the only reason
(34:15):
that he came in, I wouldhave also it's happened once and was listening
to a broadcast earlier this year thetalk of bringing him in, and they
think believe they did bring him inwhen the game was close, so they
had a chance to win it atthe end. You don't want it to
get out of hand to where itsyou're in a two to one or three
to two ball game, and thenit gets to six to two and then
he doesn't get work and your teamtwo run homer is a lot different than
(34:38):
having to score four or five runsin the ninth inning, So you're trying
to keep it within striking distance.I think that's happened this year already now
as far as last night. Ifthe only reason you brought him in was
because he's your freshest arm in thebullpen, then the big picture is that's
not good this early in the seasout. Too many arms are getting overworked.
(34:59):
Yeah, that's a problem. Nowif you think about the next two
days. Now, here's my nextthing. What if it's two to one
tonight, yeah, in the nightand they're winning. My question is where
is Ryan Presley if he was notavailable last night two to one in the
ninth available tonight, okay. Butif if it's two to one in the
ninth in a safe situation, you'reputting Hater in. I don't think Josh
(35:19):
Hater is gonna be available me personally, no, right now? Yeah,
because of last night, too manypitchesday and and and that's okay, well,
but that's that's my point. Yeah, that's his freshest arm, right,
Yeah, that's the yeah. Okay, So okay, so the next
two safe situations, now you're gonnahave to go to somebody else. Or
(35:40):
on the Wednesday day game, doesHater come back and you say we can
use him, then I would imaginehe'll tell his manager I'm available if necessary.
So point being is if if ifit's your freshest arm, it's one
thing I prefer, and the freshestarm I get. But I prefer to
look at it. The game wasstill in doubt and you're still coming to
the plate in the bottom of theninth inning, that your best guy that's
(36:04):
usually alights out closer in his pastis let's keep it close. He needs
some more. He's fresh, Let'sget him some work now. Hopefully it'll
still be within a run going intothe ninth inning and are at lasted bat
and we're good enough that one swingof the bat we win by two or
at least send it to extra innings. I gotta believe that has to play
into this decision. Now. Ifit was five to one when he came
(36:28):
in, then that's the dumbest thenit would Then it would have been you're
a little overwhelmed as a manager makingthat decision. That's exactly right. But
two to one against the time thatyou're trying to trying to third straight,
and it's that home and it's afirst game of a series, sending a
message. I get that. Seeto me? That was in thinking about
(36:50):
it. That's the main reason. And if a manager tells us that's his
freshest arm, should we not believeit? Why should she somebody watching on
TV? You think they know moreabout it? How do I know more
about the fresh arms than he does. I'll tell you his arms not fresh
SETH Martinez. Yeah, after allthe work he's got in, so I
don't know now if they're in asafe suge, I'll tell you now,
(37:12):
here's what happens, Brian. Let'sthink they're in a safe situation tonight and
they lose it, and I blowa safe and it's not Josh Hater.
You know, their revision is history'scoming right back there to see if you'd
have used him on Monday, ifyou wouldn't have used him, then he
had him in a safe situation. So really, you can't win for losing,
no, he as a manager, you just can't. And people would
have made different decisions, but mineis regardless. He knows the fresh arms.
(37:36):
I mean we assume from watching ifsome guys pitch back to back days
and throw them sixty pitches as awullpen guy, or fifty pitches because he
had to get four outs, thenguess what. He's not available the next
day. That's pretty obvious. Butif that's that's his guy's closer and you're
thinking, of course it's Josh Hater, we're gonna have a chance to win
it the ninth I get that partof the decision. Presley hasn't thrown since
Friday, so why was he notavailable last night? I mean Obviously we
(37:58):
don't know closer on his team thelast three or four years, Ryan Presley,
that's a as Dana Brown would sayabout the lineup, that's a joe
a spot, A question. Idon't know. It's weird. Is he
okay? If you haven't pitched sinceFriday? Why is I would have gone
to Brian Presley last night if RyanPresley was available, honestly, two to
(38:21):
one game and the top of theninth. He's used to situations like that.
So if it's not, so,where was he ran? Well,
we've seen Hater since since Friday?Right, So why is Ryan Presley fresh
if we haven't seen him since Friday? But Hater isn't I mean fresh?
But but but Presley isn't when hehasn't seen the mount since Friday. How
is Josh Hater your freshest arm yet? Ryan Presley hasn't pitched since Friday?
(38:47):
To me, it's to me,I think it just comes down to this,
Brian, that you wanted to keepit close. How else? So
now that we've talked through this, then we realized that Pressy hasn't pitched since
Friday. That answer doesn't make sense, especially since it's a guy who's used
to closing anyway, that's his normalrole. Seed, you didn't feel comfortable
(39:08):
putting him in. That can't bea confidence thing already, can it?
Yeah? No, no way, there's no way. Right. Remember we
said you've got three closures in essence, if you need them to shift them
around depending on the work Hella Bray, you can come and close out a
game for you to night too normally, so you have three of them that
are interchangeable, with hater being yourfull time closer. So that I have
no idea, we will ask DaneBrown tomorrow Presley's usage, and if he
(39:32):
didn't, if you're in a safesituation night, I would imagine Ryan Presley's
got to be your guy tonight.Right, excuse me? Why was he
the guy last night? I haveno idea because they weren't winning. I
don't know, but you'd think, well, he needs work too, writ
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. I don't know, Bud, I
don't know that answer. And nownow it now it's questioning people question it
(39:53):
makes a little more sense, isthat what you're saying? Yeah, now
it's now, it's now understand it. Yeah, I could have swore I
saw Presley pitch over the weekend,But now that I look back, he
hadn't pitched since Friday, So whatwhat did I'm so confused now? Where
was Ryan Presley? Welcome to prosports, brother, thank you, I'm
(40:15):
glad to be here. No,but no, welcome to college sports.
What I've been about the reason I'msaying for all of us, welcome to
pro sports and decisions that made everyright? That's my point. Yeah,
hmm, something's afoot? Or aheel? Or yeah? Or could?
Do you want to be a heel? You want to pull the heel?
Roll? No? Well, Idon't mind being I don't really care if
(40:37):
people think I am or not thatthat doesn't bug me at all. If
it doesn't matter. It's been itbefore, it won't be the last time
or the first time. We'll callyou the heel, that's what you know.
We won't do, though, callme Lake to dinner. Damn.
Right there you go. Right, let's get into seven o'clock hours seven one
three, two, one two five, seven ninety. I still want to

to usc truth. Longtime friend shownSalisbury, Brian Lolma, go Lobos.
This is the Sean sALS Very Show. Dimiko Ryan spoke to the media at
an RG stadium. Our own AdamWexler of the A Team was out there
get some audio to discuss with them. Very exciting offseason for the Texans.
(43:17):
The NFL Draft is next. Let'ssee next Thursday, so about a week
and two days away from the NFLDraft. Obviously, the Texans don't have
a first round pick. We'll UH. As we inch closer to that NFL
Draft, we'll start to break downwho we could potentially see the Texans drafting
next Thursday. Seven one, three, two two five seven ninety the number
(43:39):
to join and UH. Before weget out to the phone lines and talk
to John Uh, here's a littlemore on Josh Hater. Excuse me,
Josh haters Josh Hayter. Last nightpitching for his second consecutive day, he
allowed five consecutive braves to reach base, He issued a walk, and then
(44:01):
four straight hits, giving up fourruns. Sean, do you know what
his e r A is? Afterjust nine appearances fifteen nine point three nine,
he has one save, a blownlead and a blown save. Well,
if you're into numerology, A nine, A three, and a nine.
Good numerology there you feel me,Doc, what's nine plus three?
(44:23):
Also, that's twelve, and what'sthe plus nine plus that's twenty one?
You just want blackjack match, saynumerology right off flowing? So nine three
nine, we just don't want himto live there. Yeah, well let's
start. What about three six nine? Damn? She fine? Is that
a cut? Yeah? Who's saysthat cut? You know what? I
don't who sings that cut? Thirtysix nine? Damn, she's fine.
(44:46):
It doesn't ring a bill? Whatas long is that? Come on?
Man? Really? As long isthat get Low by Little John? Yeah?
My favorite cut? Damn? Howabout you get yeah there? Yeah,
there we go. Yes, Idon't know the words, but now
I know. Now, I knowthat, I understand that. I wouldn't
know math. You could have givenme a hundred guesses. And why are
(45:08):
you yelling off? The bus gotdown my mouth? That's the cut?
Yeah, yeah, of course Iknow that song. I didn't know that.
Yeah, dude, I'll stand upat the club and I'll be club
and with that cut MAT's off asKings of Cronow tell me, people don't
jump up and do this. Yeah, it's the what's that the line you
(45:30):
used? It's three six nine grand? Yeah, I got you, jo,
It's got you. Whole culture atseven o five in the morning,
seven one three two two five. The Culture Club. That's it? Name
me the front man, Well, the front person for the Culture Club.
Why'd you say you said front man? Is he not a man anymore?
(45:51):
Did he transfer to the woman?I'm just being respectful, okay, front
person culture Culture Club. They're anEnglish new wave band. Who the hell?
Really? You don't, yes, trying to put some respect. Pretty
(46:12):
sure he's man. You don't reallywant to me and that that they're cut.
Yeah, you don't really want tomake me cryit. That's make exactly
little Culture Club this morning. Thereyou go, let's talk to John.
What's up John? Hey, guys, before I get to my point,
how about c J. Stroud thrownout the first pitch last night? You
(46:34):
know, you know what's what's crazy, John, is you watch CJ.
Stroud throw the football all over thefield, down the field, hell of
a rookie year. And then youwatch him get on the mound and you
see him throw in his baseball forhim and is terrible, but it still
makes it looks like a like abeyond, like a like a little leaguer
out there for the first time,a little little risk right down the pipe.
(47:00):
He put it where the catcher's glovewas though. Yeah, it is
true, and that sh that shouldn'tsurprise us. You know, you know,
John, I don't know why you'recalling it. You don't even want
c J. Stroud. You wantedWill Levins No, I wanted a quarterback
next, But you know c J. Stroud was my choice. But but
yeah, Will Anderson will no LevinsNo, I know you want Will Anderson.
(47:22):
No, Will Levins Man called himelevens. Okay, yeah, there's
no end. Okay, uh butyeah, but Stroud through right down him.
But did you expect you know what, I'll bet you he was nervous
too. I'll bet you he wasjust as nervous for that as he does
in FOOTBA because football is is moh, that's what you do. You
go in there, throw the firstpitch. It's like, oh, I
know, that's my point. Yeah, it's like, okay, well,
let me just grab this baseball andthrow a strike right down the middle.
(47:44):
Even Angel Hernandez couldn't have missed that. Cah, god, yeah you could
have. Maybe there you go,yeah maybe, so you know what,
But you know, I'm getting backto my point. There was making during
spring training in the beginning of theseason, and all that, the fact
that we never went out and gotthat that you know, stud picture.
It's just I'm really worried about thisrelief staff. You know, it's already
being strained and these guys are gonnabe just gassed out going into August.
(48:07):
Like you said, Sean, I'mI'm very worried. We're not getting any
length at all in the starting pitchersand it's gonna, boy, it's gonna
wear these guys down. It's andit's it's happening at an accelerated rate.
I think. So. Yeah,if people aren't concerned about that, then
then we're not watching the same game. I'm with you right now. You
got something's got to get fixed there, right John, No doubt about it,
(48:28):
no question, Absolutely great stuff, buddy. Appreciate you, Okay,
thanks guys, appreciate you. Yeah, I mean we we talked about it,
Sean. Like like John mintioned,we talked about this coming into into
this season. Is is the uhquestion marks of fromber Christian Xavier obviously justin
excuse me, justin Verland are gettinghurt in spring training and the fact that
(48:49):
they let uh Ryan Stanek, filmAton and hectoran Ais go and yet really
didn't bolster it. And now withyour starters not being able to make get
through four innings, his call likewe see it, Buddy, listen when
you lose five starters. Yeah AHouston, Houston and iHeart Radio station.

here's a little more on Josh Hater. Excuse me, Josh Hater.
So Josh Hayter last night pitching forhis second consecutive day, he allowed five

We just don't want him to livethere? Yeah? What about three

Who's sings that cut? You knowwhat? I don't who sings that cut?

Damn? How yeah, there yougo? Yeah, there we go.
Now, yeah, I don't knowthe words, but now I know.
Now I know that I understand that. I wouldn't know, Mattha,
you could have given me one hundredguesses and windows. Why are you yelling
(51:50):
off the bus? Down my bout? Oh that's the cut? Yeah,
yeah, of course I know. That's all. I didn't know that.
Yeah, dude, I'll stand upat the club and I'll be club and
with that cut, MAT's off askings of Cronown. Tell me, people

(52:19):
got you. Old Culture at seveno five in the morning, seven one

You said front man? Is henot a man anymore? Did he

Culture Club. They're an English newwave band. Who the hell you know?
(52:43):
Really? You don't know that?Yes, trying to put some respect,
Okay, pretty sure he's man.You don't really want to hurt me
that that they're cut? Yeah, you don't really want to make me crew.
That's a h exactly little culture clubthis morning. There you go,
(53:05):
let's talk to John. What's up? John? Hey, guys, before
I get to my point, howabout c J. Stroud thrown out the
first pitch last night? You know, you know what's h what's crazy John?
As you watch CJ. Stroud throwthe football all over the field,
down the field, hell of arookie year. And then he watched him
get on the mount and you seehim throw in his baseball for him and
(53:28):
it is terrible, but it stillmakes it. Everybody threw it. It
looks like a like a beyond, like a like a little leaguer out there
for the first time, a littlelittle wrist right down the pipe. He
put it where the catcher's glove was. Though, yeah, it is true,
and that should that shouldn't surprise us. You know, you know,
(53:49):
John, I don't know why you'recalling it. You didn't even want c
J. Stroud. You wanted WillEvins. No, I wanted a quarterback
next, but you know, andc J. Stroud was my choice.
But but yeah, Wills Will Evansnons No, I know you want Will
Anderson. No, Will Evans Mann'sOkay, yeah, there's no end.
Okay, uh but yeah, butstrouth through right down to but did you
(54:10):
expect you know what, I'll betyou he was nervous too. I'll bet
you was just as nervous for thatas he does in football, because football
is his m Oh, that's whatyou do. When you go in there
and throw the first pitch, it'slike, oh, I know, that's
my point. Yeah, it's like, okay, well, let me just
grab this baseball and throw a strikeright down the middle. Even Angel Hernandez
couldn't have missed that. Cah,god, yeah you could have maybe there
you go, yeah, maybe soyou know what, But you know,
(54:31):
I'm getting back to my point thatI was making during spring training in the
beginning of the season and all that, the fact that we never went out
and got that that you know, stut pitcher. It's just I'm really worried
about this relief staff. You know, it's already being strained, and these
guys are gonna be just gasped outgoing into August. Like you said,
Sean, I'm I'm very worried. We're not getting any length at all in
(54:53):
the starting pitchers and it's gonna boy, it's gonna wear these guys down.
It's and it's it's happening in anexcel I think. So. Yeah,
if people aren't concerned about that, then then we're not watching the same game.
I'm with you right now. Yougot something's got to get fixed there,
right John, No doubt about it, no question, Absolutely great stuff,
Buddy. Appreciate you. Appreciate you, John. Yeah, I mean
(55:15):
we we talked about it, Sean. Like, like John mentioned, we
talked about this coming into into thisseason. Is is the uh question marks
of Fromber, Christian Xavier obviously justinexcuse me, justin Verland are getting hurt
in spring training and the fact thatthey let uh Ryan Stanek, film Aton
and Hector and Airis go and yetreally didn't bolster it. And now with
(55:38):
your starters not being able to makeit through four innings, just call like
we see it, buddy, Listenwhen you lose five starters. Yeah,
and we say, well, Fromberwas healthy going in fine, but he
still missed two starts. He's notpitching against in either one of these next
two games. He's going to gethis start against Washington on the road,
and which hopefully will be a Verlanderstart. Well, that being said,
(56:02):
you cannot lose five starting pitchers andtell me everything's okay. You just can't.
And John didn't. I don't thinkanybody suggesting it. You can't just
thought to say, oh we're gonnabe fine. We're gonna be fine.
We get them all healthy. Verlandergoes out there as long as it doesn't
linger Fromberg gets back out there andfor whatever reason he's missed a few starts,
(56:22):
said, you know, whether it'stired or arms soreness, but didn't
get an MRI location of the sorenesson the arm. Whatever, mental and
emotional strength and all those things.Physical strength getting back out there, but
you're not okay. There's not ateam in baseball that can. They're not
the Atlanta Braves, not the Dodgers. I don't care because eventually pitching,
(56:43):
I mean, you'll be able tohit. You'll also go through slumps,
and when that happens, you cannotsay, oh, we're gonna be okay.
Well, okay, it's not goodenough for this franchise or any other
team that expects to win a WorldSeries. So when we say it and
say we got this guy and Arraghetti'sjumping into it, a good job.
We see Seth Martinez coming out ofthe bullpen and need more at one hundred
(57:04):
round. The bottom line is youare going to suffer when you have five
starting pitchers hurt. Period. Nowthe question is is it a deep hurt
or is it on the surface hurtwhere you can hang in there. I
tell everybody is healthy and somebody elsehave to carry you. Like when you
get ten runs, ten runs, eight runs, nine runs, eleven runs.
Now it's a different ballgame, butthat's not going to happen. People
(57:25):
don't average nine runs a game inMajor League Baseball, and their wins have
been extreme, their losses have beensomewhat brutal at times. I'll even take
the in between stuff where they sustainconsistency because they're good enough. As long
as they come up the plate inseven, eight, and nine, within
a run or two, they alwayshave a chance to win because those bats
will eventually explode and Bregman will hita home run. Okay, it will
(57:49):
eventually happen. So if again,I just want to ask one thing before
we get to the stakeout. IfRyan Presley hasn't pitched since Friday, how
was josh Ada your freshest arm inthe bullpen. I wish I could sit
here, and if we speculate,I have no idea unless he's unless he's
already got armed fatigue, or theylost confidence in putting him in because literally
(58:10):
he wasn't your freshest arm. Butmaybe in Joe's spot, his mind talking
to the pitching coach and bullpen staffand in his mind saying, well,
even though Ryan Presley worked, didn'twork after since Friday and Hater did that,
he still felt like Hater was asfresh as arm. Hard to sell
that, but if Joe believed it. Dude, once again, who's the
(58:32):
manager to Joe's spotted decision? Whetheryou like it or not, doesn't make
sense to me. I'm a calllike I see it. Why is Ryan
Presting not in that game? Theonly thing I can think of is it
was close and you wanted a chanceto swing the bat in the ninth and
thought that Hater would keep you withinone swing of the bat, and that
didn't happen. And now it iseasy to speculate. Now, I'll tell
you what. If he gets himout and it's two to one and they
(58:55):
go into the bottom of the ninthand win three to two. Joe A.
Spott will be the King today.A great decision to put to keep
Hater in there, get him workfresh arm, according to Joe Spotta,
and that he kept us close. You wouldn't be having this conversation day if
Hater did his normal job, whichis in this past. Yeah, get
you out. He didn't even getthe two outs, but he got one
(59:15):
out, one out. Yeah,he recorded one out. But also,
Joe Spotted knows how good Ryan Presleyis now. Obviously he struggled a bit
this season, probably trying to getcomfortable in his new role. But yet
you've seen him come into the ninthplenty of times. Joe Spott has been
around long enough to know that RyanPresley is comfortable in that ninth inning.
Well so, I apparently last nighthe wasn't. Does it make sense to
(59:37):
you? No, but my headwill explode trying to figure it out.
I'm here for you, though,Why don't you want it? You want
me to bring the couch in?No, I'm good. We got comfy
chairs that roll on, unbelievable.Sure, yeah, I'm good right now.
Okay, I'll let you know asa show goes on, show goes
on. No, No, no, yeah, okay, you ready get
the stake out? You want tosteak something now and or what? Yeah?
I'm ready? Come on, dude, I get some girl. Mark.
(01:00:00):
I'm here the whole time. Youare going you are, I ain't
going anywhere. Okay, let's goto the steakout. Next on Sports Talk
seven to eighty. This is SportsTalk seven ninety, home of the Rockets,
Astros and the best line up inHouston Sports. Now back to Sean
Salisbury. All right, Sean, what are you hearing out there now?
(01:00:23):
The Salisbury's takeout, Salisbury Takeout onthe Sean Salisbury Show. Time for the
steakout here on the Sean Salisbury Show, Sean Brown and Tripoli here with you.
The Astros losing to the Braves,Game two of the Serious night at
(01:00:44):
Mini May Park, seven to tento the first pitch, six o'clock on
Deck Show. Right here on sevennine, your home for Astros baseball,
a Texans kickoff their offseason workout program. All right, Sean, for the
steakout, gonna turn our attention tobasketball. We'll go back to Astros Talk
at seven thirty. But for thestakeout. Obviously, the WNBA had their
(01:01:04):
draft last night and probably the mostcoverage I think I've ever seen from the
WNBA. Kaylen Clark goes number oneoverall, rightfully, So did you see
her her contract that she's gonna get. I did not, And congratulations to
her and all the other young womenwho were drafted and get to start their
(01:01:27):
careers. And nowadays when we're sayingget to go make money, but a
lot of them have already maken moneybecause of name, image and likeness and
the collectives. So good for them. And I did not see her contract,
but her endorsement money is going tobe huge and it should be.
Why because she's brought eyes to asport that desperately needed more of them.
And she is a and if ourOlympic team doesn't take her, and Lisa
(01:01:47):
Leslie said it, we don't geton that plane without Caitlin Clark. She
is already a bona fide baller.Yeah, she has to be on the
Olympic team absolutely, If nothing elsefor the eyes, it's going to draw
the telecast. And I got newsfor you. This isn't just cosmetic stuff
when it comes to I'm not talkingabout her looks. I'm talking about cosmetic
game where she's all flash and dashand can't play. We know she can
(01:02:10):
shoot, she can rebound, she'sa hell of a passer high basketball IQ.
She has to go on the Olympicteam, and quite frankly, I
wouldn't be surprised she comes out ofthe Olympics one of the better players on
at Lisa Leslie's right, the formergreat player. She has to be on
that and she should get paid becausemoney is revenue, moving the needle,
making everybody else pay more attention andget other people paid. She's done it.
(01:02:37):
Yeah, I don't have problem.I don't know what her contract's going
to be, but her off thecourt money may match that, if not
more, at some point, maybeit already does. She signed a She's
got a four year rookie contract. She was drafted number one overall to the
Indiana Fever. Her jersey's sold outlast night on their website. Right,
that's to be expected. Four years, three hundred and thirty eight fifty six
(01:02:58):
dollars twenty twenty four. She's goingto make seventy a little over seventy six
grand twenty twenty five. She's gonnamake a little over seventy eight grand twenty
twenty six. She's gonna make almosteighty six thousand dollars and then twenty twenty
seven she has an option, butthat that part of the contract is gonna
pay her at ninety seven five andeighty two dollars. Well, here's what
I know. The first off, when the WNBA, we saw the change
(01:03:22):
in college ratings. She was backin college. She should be making far
more than that name image, andlike that she's gonna make. She's making
more. Her endorsement money's gonna blowaway all that salary. Matter of fact,
her endorsement money she can sock away. She can live off the dog
on contract. Right. But whenpeople say, well that's not equal pay
yet, well, in the WNBAthey're gonna need to fill and they very
(01:03:44):
well may do it in Indianapolis. Now, WNBA arenas with fifteen seventeen thousand
people for every home game and onthe road people come and they will.
And then you got to say, well, she's grossly underpaid and by standards
of what she's done in her career, in which if you were just talking
about not eyes on it, who'swatching on TV, if you're just talking
about performance on the court, hell, yeh, she deserves a lot more
(01:04:05):
money. If you're talking about whatshe's done for visuals, she deserves a
ton more money. But what they'regoing to see over these four years is
if the ratings in the WNBA startto match what we saw in college basketball,
then the salaries will go up.And it also tells you they can't
afford to pay her much more onthat because there's a lot of people making
money, but these eyes. Mypoint is when these eyes continue to do
(01:04:27):
what happens, Sponsorship dollars go up, ratings go up, salary cap and
all those other things, and arookie salary it goes up. She is
I don't want to say single handily, because there's a lot of good players,
but she has changed the game withthe way they visualize college women's basketball.
Now, who's going to sustain itnext? Is that Juji Watkins is
at a bunch of other Caitlin Clark's. That's the key we see it now,
(01:04:48):
to keep those eyes on it incollege hoops, you gotta do it.
Now. We're going to see ifthe carryover goes from college to the
WNBA. She was the first pick, and rightfully so on the court,
grossly underpaid, but when it comesto the ratings and eyeballs and the and
why why isn't she making as muchas Steph Curry or Lebron will because consistently,
(01:05:08):
now she's gonna have to draw thosesame people to the building, which
hopefully she will for for women's sportsand women's basketball. And but what she
did for college basketball has been nothingshort of phenomenal, and the attention that
she's had eyes turned to now we'vegot to find somebody that can sustain it
like her to continue this in collegeand for her to go do the same
thing in the WNBA. But goodfor her. She deserved to be the
(01:05:29):
first pick. She's a hell ofa marketer and she's a She's not just
a flash in the pan. Thiswoman can play, Yeah, she can.
She can knock it down from theparking lot seven seven. I talked
to Drew. Drew, what's goingon? Hey, good morning fellas,
appreciate you having me and wanted totouch on a few different things. I
get right into it first on thetop of the goer, just discuss them.
With the WNBA and the money thatthe women get, I think they
(01:05:55):
do deserve more. They very skew. But at the same time, I
did that myself. Your questions doyou watch the games? Do you or
three questions, do you watch thegames, do you buy the merch or
do you go to the games,Because if your answer no to all those
questions, and it's a little disingenuousfor you to say, oh, man,
that's ridiculous, they should get more, they should get well, you're
(01:06:16):
you're you get helped that out byyou know, participating and honestly myself,
uh, you know, looking inthe mirror, I haven't. I haven't
went to a game while I'm here, and you've seen you know, I
wish the comments with something bad,But I don't watch the games. I
don't buy the merch so I cansit here and say, oh, they
should be paying more. They shouldthey they that's criminal, that's ridiculous.
(01:06:39):
But I ain't doing anything to help. So, UH just just wanted to
kind of say that real quick, and then uh to the Astros. I
know there's been a lot of talkingabout panic leader and where where you are
in your thinking of where the teamis gonna be right now. Uh,
they're just you know, y'all saidit before. They're they're just not a
consistently fifteen Their feasts of famine, with the with the with the offense,
(01:07:03):
and then the pitching. You justnever know what you're gonna get. So
I'm still confident in this team becausei know it's like, hey, you
know, you can't say last coupleof years and it's what have you done
for me lately? For sure,But you also got to balance that with
a track record. When teams aredynasties, you do have to give them
the benefit of the doubt because they'vebeen through adversity in the past and they
(01:07:27):
and they've gotten through it. SoI know it's not the team of old.
I know it's like hey, twentytwenty two, you know, to
a certain extent, But at thesame time, this is an Astros team
that has a pedigree and I'm anI'm gonna trust that until they give me
a complete reason or not to uh. But then wrapping up real quick rockets,
(01:07:47):
I'm really satisfied with them going tofive hundred. Uh. For them
not to make the playoffs, Imean, for them not to make the
play in with forty one wins isinsane and that it shows you how competitive
that the Western Conference was, andI'm just glad that they competed up until
basically the final the final minutes, the final segments on the car they competed
(01:08:11):
and that's that's ultimately what I wantedto see from them this year and for
them to take the jump next year. But these these playoffs are about to
be really fun with all these thingsthat I can't wait to watch them starting
tonight and then with my Texans justwrapping it all up. Man, they
hear those guys. Hear those guyscome back and have such a consistent message.
Uh with Will Anderson when he saidyou have to have a certain mindset
(01:08:36):
and that the Texans and for everybody, and it sounded the same way when
he talked about Alabama and a fewyears ago, years ago, Bill O'Brien
would have been none of our playerswould have been saying nothing something like this.
He legos to steal that in theseguys. And I'm just I'm just
super pumped and ready for the draft, ready for the off season, ready
(01:08:57):
for them to come back in andshow how improved. So yeah, I
just wanted to get in and hopoff until I've spent a lot of time.
But you have those shows go rockets, so uh, text and appreciate
you'll. I thank you, Drew, Drew, thank you very much.
I will say this, and I'mWithdrew on this. I have been to
plenty of college women's basketball games.I have I have never, and i've
(01:09:23):
never and I listen, I amso happy for them. But he's right,
you want to pay him. Haveyou ever been to a w NBA
game? Bought a ticket? I'vebeen to one. I was a kid,
as an adult, as an adult, No, and I wasn't here
watch I wasn't here when when CynthiaCooper, who is a classmate of mine
in college, wasn't here? Youknow no better. I've watched games on
TV. It was at the Summit. I believe I watched games on TV.
(01:09:44):
I've never been to used to be. It's not a matter of disrespect
at all. I've just never beento a w n B A game.
I wasn't overly interested because I don't. I'm more of a TV guy anyway.
When it comes to even men's Iwon't go to. I watched Texans
games on TV right. I likedthat analyzing and I'd like to hear the
broadcast and I can focus more. But I've never been to one, and
(01:10:06):
so Drew's right, that did putyour money where your mouth. That's right.
I support him and want them successful, And you're right. The first
w NBA game i'll watch, probablythat i'll ever go to in person's probably
some point in time to watch CaitlynClark play. What she's done. Open
my eyes. But that's a Iraised my hand as a person who's never
been to a w NBA game andI'm in the business of sports. Yeah,
(01:10:29):
and this, But I'll tell youwhat if I was back there and
I was in Indianana, or Iwas traveling and Caitlin Clark was in an
arena near me. Worth the money, worth the price of ticket, worth
the visual, and that's what we'reall looking for. We've seen it on
the golf course with Tiger Woods. We've seen I don't know if he's going
to change the game like that, but she sure has changed college basketball's visuals.
Now we need somebody to sustain itand be great like he has been
for a long time. I justlooked on the Indiana Fever website to try
(01:10:54):
to get it. Kaitlyn Clark Jersey. There's nothing either. Good luck.
Yeah, they're calling, So therethere you have it. That's the point.
But I and I don't say itproudly. I don't wear as a
badge of honor. But she haschanged to the point that I would go
to a WNBA game now. I'vehad a lot of friends that have played
it over the years, watched onTV, but I've never been into a
w NBA game while the arena. In the arena while to buy a ticket
(01:11:15):
and go play, I go watchher play. Yes you would, and
then you discovered and what she's alsodone has allowed you to discover that there's
a lot of good players, butshe's just taking it to another level.
For whatever reason, we've we've fallenin love with the Caitlin Clark game and
the way she goes about her business. I think also with all the haters
from the w NBA, like DianaTarrossi talking out of her ass and the
(01:11:36):
things like that, makes me rootfor her even more, oh harder than
you've ever rooted because you know what, I don't know why they're not rooting
for success, because her success isgoing to allow others to be successful.
And you know what, records aremade to be broken. At some point,
she made it being better than youI don't know. Tarassi's a mount
Rushmore. Yeah, but one ofthe best. You don't see she doesn't
(01:11:56):
need to do anything but encourage.Look at Lisa Leslie said, put her
on the Olympic team. All itis is if you're rooting for women's success,
women empowering women. What apter that? There's no more empowering sports face
for women right now on the planetthan Caitlyn Clark Right seven one three two
one two five seven. Let's getback to the Astros. Can it get
any worse for jose Abray you? That's next. The Shawn Salisbury Show continues
(01:12:20):
on seven ninety and continues in yourhome, Say Alexa play Sports Talk seven
ninety on iHeartRadio seven one three, two one two five seven ninety. Got
a couple of guys that want toget in. So let's get back out
to the phone lines and talk toyou the Astros fan, Roger, what's
up? What's going on? Mybrothers? What's up? All right?
(01:12:40):
So? I got a question.I got a question for you, John,
which which leak of this mighty watchMighty Astros cruise ship gets uh gets
plugged up first? And do youthink because I I I think the pitching
staff is gonna be okay in acouple of weeks. I really do.
And I think the second run thesecond term for Arrogetty. You saw that,
(01:13:01):
you saw the results the guy was, there's a lot better, He's
more controlled, more first pitch strikes. We like that, you know.
Uh so I was thinking the samefor uh maybe uh JP Fretz a regal
thinking Leonard Brown is gonna it's gonnamake it past the seat. I think
he's gonna be set down, He'sgonna be said down. I just think
(01:13:23):
his mechanics are off. Throwing tothe left side too much, always throws
that inside corner. I just Ithink he's got some kind of mental issue
going onert Hey, Roger, realquick, let me I will well answer
your question. You may you've gotthe question in mind there, Brian.
What he asked, well, hewill be the first plug to be filled,
will be the whole first hole plugged, is Roger. I'll ask you,
(01:13:43):
what makes you think that it's gonnaget better quick just because we're getting
volanted back? What have you seenfrom Fromber that tells you he's gonna be
Fromber? What have you seen fromHunter Brown that tells you you you.
I mean, I'm not saying it'snot what I want. When you're watching
you tell me what? What? Why? Why all this sudden the change?
Because five days ago you were youwere in the tank about it.
Well, because I see that,I see the progression. I see that,
(01:14:06):
I see the improvement. I seethe improvement. I see the guys
working. I see the coaches grinding, because that they they had to be
in there. Because I see whenthe miller comes out there, and he's
coming out there on a mission onthat mound, and he ain't you know,
he ain't pulling no punches. He'sout, he's in their faces and
he's he's telling I see this.I see this that. I like this
because that means they're they're not youknow, Van's and around it. They're
(01:14:29):
trying to get this thing fixed andface quickly. So I like that.
I see the progression. So ifI if I didn't see it, I
would say I would tell you guys, But no, I see this.
Uh something's up with Hunter Brown.I'm not sure where it is. I
can't figure it out. I don'tthink he can't either. So what I'm
saying about this is I say thatto say this, So if if Hunter
Brown doesn't it doesn't make you start, or he doesn't go long, or
(01:14:53):
he gives up so x amount ofruns, it's fine because I really think,
what what's the guys getting back inthe road, Like we're gonna have
a surplus of pictures, so it'sgonna be okay. But I don't think,
why is that gonna be okay?Roger? That'll be three outings of
of like barely three innings from HunterBrown. That's not okay. You're saying
you want to keep him in therotation or you think he's gonna push him
(01:15:15):
out. I think we have enough. I think we have enough arms to
cover his innings, is what I'msaying. We'll be fine. Well,
I mean it's in my opinion.I don't know it's gonna be okay for
him, but it's not gonna beokay for this. Did you did you
hear what we said about Seth Martinezin the six o'clock hour. It's we're
eighteen games in and Seth Martinez hasalready appeared in eleven innings. Well,
(01:15:40):
he seems to be doing he seemsto be That's not good for long chevity,
though, is what I'm saying, you cannot you can't continue to have
bad outings from Hunter Brown. Butwe're gonna have other guys coming in.
Roger, I think what you're saying. I think what you're saying is that
when they get help, when theyget it'll be here. But that's just
(01:16:01):
that's just the first plug of thewhole. We shout up to unders understand,
we've got a big sample slide ofthis gaglin hide offense. We gotta
get you next, and then wegot to know what But about that black
hole at first base that we've alreadytalked to David browny we already hurt from
from a spata. It's not gonnachange. You're gonna keep rolling them out
until Will's fall off. So Iwould say to the master, you guys,
(01:16:26):
which one gets filled and which pluggets filled first faster? Which one's
more important? All right? Thanks, Roger, appreciate it. And I
think Rogers making a point too,is that when they get the guys back
that Hunter Brown his presence will probablynot even be in the starting rotation.
He gets fixed, right, there'sno doubt. So I understand he's a
little more confident in the health gettingback quickly than I am because I got
(01:16:46):
to see it first. I don'twant it to linger, but I understand
where Roger's coming from, and seeinglike Erra Getty gets some work and watching
Seth Martinez thriving this but eventually thearm will fall off keeps him not literally,
there's no doubt. So that's howopinion varies. But yeah, to
answer his question, the first holethat's gonna get plugged up is the health
part, because Verlander and Frober shouldbe making starts more than likely in Washington.
(01:17:10):
That gives you two fifths back.So that's the first one that gets
plugged up first. I think therenow two ways of the first basement first
base situation is gonna get plugged up. One way is you're gonna ride this
out because you're paying him. You'regonna rest him often. You're gonna platune
him with Singleton and others. It'sgonna be like three or four guys playing
first base, and you're gonna hopein July that bray You gets hot and

me today, how I feel itcould change in a week, just like
it does for everybody. Second baseal two v. First base is I'm

just shuffling. I'll bray you sinceI'm paying him, keeping him on a
roster. When he gets warmed up, he's the platoon guy. He comes
in one once in a while,or I need a pinch it home run.
Hopefully he runs into one and getsthat back. Is is I'm just
shuffling. When Diaz isn't catching,he's either dhing or playing first base depending
on Jordan and left field, orif he's dching and flip side when Diaz
(01:18:15):
is catching, you know who Myfirst basement is. Yes, that's exactly
what KG thirty year old veteran, good leader, a switch hitter, so
you don't have to pinch it forhim. That's where it starts. And
then until they prove me that wrong, that that can't happen, that they
can't scoop a ball up at firstbase it's a short hop, then I'll
adjust. But I've experimented with it, so it's time to experiment now with
I love, loyalty, don't careabout the back of the baseball card.
(01:18:39):
You need rest, we're aging,we've heard that he needs rest. Then
you're going to rest four days aweek. The other two are going to
play five days a week, dependingon where they are. That's just the
way. That's the best way tofix first base until you prove here.
And if you want to bring theyoung guy up, then all of a
sudden you say, okay, Victor, you're still spoting. Yeah, Joey
Loprafido, Then low Perfido, you'rethe guy that's going to fill in when
Diaz, when is catching your playingfirst base, you and Victor are gonna
(01:19:01):
go back and forth and we're gonnause that part of your game. Other
than that, that's the best way. Because I can hit one hundred.
That's all there is to it.Yeah, a lifetime achievement awards are great,
and I have nothing but respect fora brave. That first pace position

call with an endorser. Seven one, three, two two five, seven
ninety is the number to join.Let's start with Rob. Rob. Welcome
in. Oh, good morning, guys. Try and keep it quick.
Uh, just fears the Hunter Brownnew goes. You know, personally,
I'm almost I'm about done with theHunter Brown experiment. Just I want to
(01:22:00):
recap that real quick when you guys, before he jumps on me off the
course of his career so far.I know we all have high hopes for
him, and I mean I stillhope everything goes well for him. But
he's been up for a couple ofyears now. He's got an overall record
of thirteen and fifteen in an ERAover five this season so far. We
know he's been bad. But thebiggest number that jumps out to me,
aside from the innings pitched, ishe's got a walks and hits, pr
(01:22:24):
innings pitched for almost four you channelout four base runners at inning, you'll
never you'll never eat up innings. And in terms of what to do with
them, I don't see any reasonas to why we can't. If we're
gonna, if we're gonna keep toyingaround with it, send him to the
bullpen. That's where we have seenhim be successful consistently in the past.
(01:22:45):
And the reason I say that isas a starter, if you can't eat
up innings, if you cannot saveyour bullpen, then you're no good erd.
You can be a bad starter, but it still get four at least
four, if not five innings pergame. You've got to. But this
guy so far has got. Thereare four five relievers on our team as
we speak, the hob the exactsame amounts, if not more innings pitched
(01:23:09):
than him. And the way thatI've seen Seth Martinez through so far this
year, Seth Martinez has eleven inningspitched as a reliever. Yeah, Hanant
Brown's got seven innings pitched, Yeah, eleven innings. Eleven innings for Seth
Martinez in eighteen games already. That'sconcerning rob that's not that's not good.
I mean, obviously it's good becausehe is performing and pitching pretty well,
but that longevity this season, SethMartinez is gonna be burnt out by by
(01:23:32):
July right exactly. But he's aquality pitcher. So if we can only
get two thirds to one solid inningout of Hunter Brown at this point,
put him in the bullpen, becausethat's what a reliever's made to do,
is get you two to three outsand move on. Seth Martinez is shown
that he can be better than that. Brandon Belak has shown that he can
be better than that in the past. Brandon Black has been in the starter
(01:23:54):
role for us before and he's youknow, he's never been a stud,
but he's gotten a job done.We have other options, and Hunter Brown
has shown success in the bullpen,he's not shown it as a starter.
Yeah, and I think it's timeto go back to where we had him
and rob real quick before I letyou go. Just looking at some of
his career numbers, Hunter Brown,Uh, he has started thirty four games
(01:24:15):
and in those games, uh,he averages just above five innings pitch per
outing, which I don't know.I need more for my starters. I
gotta get at least I gotta getat least a consistent six throwing a seven
or an eight every now and thenget me a nine and surprise me,
make me really happy. But ifI can't average at least six innings out
(01:24:36):
of you, yeah, and thenyou're not a starter in my book,
You're a longer leiever at best.Yeah. I appreciate the call, Rob,
thank you. And I don't think. I don't think he you know,
he said, you know before peoplejump on him. I don't think
people are gonna jump on I thinka lot of a lot of people thought
this was going to be a movingyear for Hunter Brown. Where we thought
we were gonna see and again it'sstill early. I think, you know,
with the talent that he has,he can work through it. But
(01:24:58):
so far, small sample size thisseason three games started, only seven and
two thirds innings pitch. He's gotan era of almost seventeen. Obviously not
ideal. You know, tonight's amassive start for Hunter Brown. Let's continue
on the phone line to talk toBiscuit. Biscuit, what's going on?
Man, Hey, what's up mybrother? What's going on? That's v
(01:25:21):
I'm not I'm not gonna be aboutPlus we'll see what happened at the end
of the season. Man, Hey, Biscuit, give us a shout back.
Biscuit, give us a shout back. Man, you're a real choppy
Uh cannot it? Was it choppingon your end as well? Triple yeah,
okay, I couldn't hear, Biscuit, give us a shout back.
(01:25:41):
If if you're listening to seven onethree seven j W you're up next.
Man, what's going on? Goodmorning fellas morning, well listen, yeah,
good morning to you, sir,and as well as to my football
friend over there big where he started. So you're not there today, huh
(01:26:02):
okay, No, he's here,No, he's here. He had to
Sean stepped out for just a second. He's on a conference call. He'll
be uh, he'll be back ina couple of minutes. Anyway, I
think they want to make it apaggage deal talking about Uh, I bray
you on first, I bray youthe picture and uh, my gosh,
(01:26:24):
have mercy, What in the worldis going on with this? Uh?
With this uh, this kid,you can't can't say that he's a picture
when he when he can't even getover the Mound and Martinez. They tried
this deal with him for two yearsnow, don't you think it's time to
(01:26:45):
get rid of him? Which whichMartinez? I'm talking about the picture Martinez,
Seth Martinez. Yes, he's pitchedreally well this year. J W.
Well, then I guess I gotmy name's mixed up. Who was
it? They got to two runsscored on him after they pulled Hunter Brown
(01:27:06):
out. I'd have to go backand look at that game log. It
doesn't matter. But Hater, we'renot getting our money out of him.
That's for darn sure. That's beena struggle so far for Josh Hater.
That's pretty much all I had tosay. I'm just disgusted with it.
(01:27:27):
I'm not giving up on him,but they need to get up and fixed.
This boat is as saken pretty quick. We appreciate the call, j
W. Thank you. Yeah,it's for Josh Hater. It's been it's
been not good so far. He'sgot over a nine e R. A
Ryan Pressey has struggled, Brian A. Bray You has struggled. The middle
(01:27:47):
Relief has struggled. Seth Martinez hasbeen a bright spot. Brandon Belack has
come in and got his job donefor the most part. And then I
go back to tonight's game, HunterBrown, huge start for him, not
just for the team, but forhim himself. He has not pitched well
early in the season. Three startsfor him, he's only got seven to
(01:28:08):
two thirds innings pitched. I don'tknow about about you on that math,
tripley, but that's uh, that'snot good. That's very not good.
It's not good. Oh that's uhyeah, that's what is that? Seven?
But three? I mean that's that'slike, uh not even the three
innings per per start. That's that'snot good. That's like two point three
so you know, two and ahalf innings, yes, yeah, not
(01:28:29):
ideals. No, that's not good. All right, let's get to the
eight o'clock hour. Let's talk aboutfirst base. How long of a leash
will jose A Bray you have ashe continues to struggle at the plate?
Seven one three, two one twofive seven ninety. Also for you,

a start for him. Josh Haderrough out, gives up a walk,
(01:30:01):
and then four consecutive hits, givesup four runs, all of them earned.
They lose six to one. JoseAltuve continues to stay hot, three
more hits. He is currently hittingover four hundred on the season, four
to seventy six on base a sluggingpercentage of seven twenty two would be nice
(01:30:25):
if that can continue. Talking abouta guy who gave a new contract to
this validate and at least start thisseason. Well he did, He's validated
his whole career. But just like, oh, okay, I got paid,
let me go out and show youwhy I got paid again. Hey,
guy's he's just a phenomenal baseball player. Well, what a what a
what a great just you know what, I'm always intrigued with guys when they
(01:30:45):
did make me happy watching him play. I'm happy watching jose Al t ve
play even when you know, haveyou ever noticed, even when he makes
a base running blunder it that hekind of does it one hundred miles They're
like, Man, I'm just andit doesn't do it for put it this
way for laziness. Sometimes I thinkit just gets too. He's over zealous
(01:31:05):
at times and over ambitious all thebases because he's just as doesn't it fit
his personality? Ball four inches abovethe strike zone? What's he do?
Hammers? I think that that's kindof the way he plays. He runs
the basis too, I'm gonna takethis little chance and when it works,
it's great. When it does,it's like man, what's wrong, Jose,
But I just he's as beloved andI fortunately for some that may not
(01:31:27):
have been in other cities, whetherit's in their careers or as a fan
and lived in a lot of differentplaces, he's beloved here as anybody is
in their own town, as asan athlete, honest to God, as
a baseball player. I the love. But you know what, it's not
just love. Because the guy's alifer here and has overcome his story.
That still love. He's the loveof baseball, and I truly think he
gets joy from playing. And Idon't think that's the case. A matter
(01:31:50):
of fact, I guarantee you that'snot the case with a lot of athletes.
They're playing for other reasons and whateverthat is, that's on them.
I actually think Jose al two badloves to play baseball every day. But
as joy shows, smiling talking toplayers, I just it's easy to be
a fan of the guy. Andboy is he raking right now. He
is frigging gracious hitting over four hundredbottle that up right, It's crazy.
(01:32:13):
Seven seven items go to Tom TomGood morning, Good morning, guys.
I see you got to shingle uptoday. The psychiatrist is in. You're
doing a great job suiting some Astrofan egos mine included. Hey, I
got a question for both of you, and I'm not trying to be funny
with this question. My son saidthis to me this morning. He was
(01:32:34):
listening with me. I took themto school, and he said, ask
them if they think the Astros aregoing to get to ten wins before they
get to twenty losses? The hellof questions? Yeah, yeah, you
know there's six and twelve and youknow they're kind of right on that borderline.
Uh, you know, I'm goingto keep the faith still. I
(01:32:57):
see things that we can give mehope obviously sleep. He just talked about
jose L two. They Uh,the guy's just unbelievable man. And you
look at him and you see howhis size, between his size and his
heart. You know, the restof the team ought to look up to
him, and I know they do. I know everybody, everybody does.
But Hunter Brown. Let me justsay this about Hunter Brown. It's not
(01:33:21):
a it's not an experiment with HunterBrown. It's a project. You know
what. We need this guy toget to five and a third innings at
least in one start. He needsto pick up his game. Don't walk
(01:33:42):
anybody, throw strikes, let himhit it. I don't know what else
to say. You know, maybeI'm thinking here the other day, I
was thinking maybe when jay V getsback here, I'm someone to sue him.
I don't know, you know,we're reaching with Hunter Brown. I
just can't believe. This guy's gota talent. He's got ability, He's
shown it. He won ten gameslast year. You can win ten games
(01:34:04):
in this league, you can winfifteen. So you know, I don't
know what the answer is to him, but we can't give up on him
ability. Yeah, Tom, agreat point, and yeah, and great
phone calling to your son. Ilove the question. And we always appreciate
you chiming in daily, my manand giving us some good stuff. We
(01:34:26):
appreciate that, and we look forwardto hearing from you tomorrow. I can
tell you this two things, HunterBrown. Stuff is too good, as
Steve Sparks mentioned, mechanical where he'sthrown it jump. The thing with him
is the level of inconsistency. Igot to even take it. The level
of bad pitching to start the seasonis a tad bit alarming. Yeah,
(01:34:48):
but he didn't forget how to hedidn't forget. Hopefully he doesn't forget how
talented he is. But there's somethingthat that's some's got lost in translation,
mechanics wise or confidence wise, forwhatever reason. Of course, you can't
commit quit on him. You're toocommitted to him right now, and quite
frankly, you need him to begood now. That may be back to
(01:35:12):
I don't know, in the bullpentriple A. Whatever it is, he's
got to find it. And Tom'sone hundred percent correct. I think the
question exists, if fair, whatare they at right now? Eight and
what's their record? There are sixand twelve six and twelve eighteen games in
Yeah, so they are four gamesaway from ten and eight games away from
I gotta believe they're getting the tenwins before twenty losses. I would think,
(01:35:33):
though I got Now, then theschedule's fairly the next two where they
got they're in Mexico City coming downthe pike here in a little bit,
and they're in Washington to start this. So they go to Washington and then
they have Chicago Cubs, and thenthey're in Mexico City, right, and
then they go to Mexico City againstColorado. There you go well the first,
(01:35:56):
the first and the third series. They should be favored in those series,
the second one. The only reasonI say that the Cub situation is
because it's Wrigley Field. You neverknow what the hell's gonna go on there
where the winds blowing and the popfly ends up out or could still be
cold. I don't know they shouldbe. I mean, they're the better
team in all three. But theway they're playing this year talks about well
(01:36:17):
one good, one bad, oneaverage, two bad, two good.
It's that's the problem. So Igot to believe they're getting four wins before
eight losses, Buddy at Washington,at Chicago, in Mexico City for Colorado,
and then at home against the ClevelandGuardians. They should be favored in
all of those matchups in my opinion. Oh, there's no doubt. Favors
(01:36:40):
one thing. Yeah, finishing itout's another. So we're gonna see.
I'm going to lean towards they're gettingto ten wins before twenty losses. I
would think so, and I liketo say they do it comfortably, but
it does beg the question if yousaid, Sean, they're six and sixteen.
I don't know what my answer wouldbe the Homer part of me would
say when I say Homer, therooting for the fan, they just knowing

right, and then they go toMexico City against Colorado. There you
go, Well, the first, the first in the third series, they
(01:44:15):
should be favored in those series. The second one. The only reason I
say the Cub situation is because it'sWrigley Field. You never know what the
hell is gonna go on there wherethe wind's blowing and pop fly ends up
out or could still be cold.I don't know they should be. I
mean, they're the better team inall three. But the way they're playing
this year talks about well one good, one bad, one average, two
bad, two good. It's that'sthe problem. So I got to believe
(01:44:41):
they're getting four wins before eight lossesBuddy at Washington, at Chicago, in
Mexico City for Colorado, and thenat home against the Cleveland Guardians. They
should be favored in all of thosematchups in my opinion. Oh, there's
no doubt. Favors one thing, yeah, finishing it out to another.
So we're gonna I'm going to leantowards they're getting to ten wins before twenty
(01:45:02):
losses, I would think so,and I'd like to say they do it
comfortably, but it does beg thequestion if you said, Sean, they're
six and sixteen. I don't knowwhat my answer would be. The Homer
part of me would say, whenI say Homer, the rooting for the
fan then just knowing at some pointthey're busting out and going to play six,
(01:45:23):
eight, ten, twelve games ofAstros type baseball. But you would
have to choose the latter right now. If it was if they were four
wins four wins away or four lossesaway from twenty losses and four wins away
from twenty wins, I'm gonna leanon this one to answer his son's question,
they're getting four wins before they're gettingeight losses. It's tee. If
(01:45:45):
now, if you want to talkabout a little bit of alarm clock going
off, and if they if theyget to twenty losses before ten wins,
you you should start to your concernlevel should raise to you into that six
and a half seven range, andI'm serious about that. Then you than
the alarming some will have happened inthose games where you're saying the oh,
some are already there. I'm notconcerns about certain individuals. I'm not concerned
(01:46:10):
about the sum. I'm really notBrian overall, I'm really not. Injuries
are always a concern. The partsthat fit into that sum. Some of
the parts are unbelievable right now, some and now, well, some of
the parts are playing better than thesum of it. Over the big picture,
I just trust that the Astros aregoing to come out of it and
the sum is going to look reallygood because they're good. But it's the
(01:46:30):
parts right now, the Hunter Browns, Bregman's power, the first base position,
finding, settling down in center field, all these things, and bullpen
success. So there's a lot ofparts to put together. But it'd be
hard pressed for me. I'd takeany bet right now this said Astros get
ten wins before they get to twentylosses. You'd be hard pressed to find
me a bet that I wouldn't takeon that one before we get to break
(01:46:53):
one here. One thing that Ialso wanted to talk about, just real
quick is last night's Jesse Javez camein for the Braves. H He is
in his seventeenth big league season, thrown between like eighty eight and ninety miles
an hour, and those eighty eightto ninety minine hour fastballs blew right past
Josea Bray. You I mean hecouldn't catch up to him. I don't
(01:47:16):
know. I look, man,he's hitting point zero or he's hitting point
eighty, whatever it is, hey, zero eight zero can't run him out
there, No, you can't.I don't care if you're paying nineteen second,
I'll stand from to this. Itold you right now. As much
as I want, as much asI want to push forward, and I
don't want to push time ford,I want time to slow down for all
of it goes too fast anyway,But as much I like to push forward
(01:47:39):
to the August jse Bray you Septemberlast year, I'm all in or you
know how. The late starts arefine, but we can't. And as
much as I'd like to say,Hunter Brown's giving me three great starts,
those are two position one position toone player. That if Hunter Brown goes
out there and does not pitch wellin this next start, that's tonight,
right, it is. Yes,if he does not go out there and
pitch one is miserable, yep, yeah, you have to move him,
(01:48:01):
maybe down to triple a to getmore work. You just have to.
You're gonna have to. I meanyou're gonna have to move somebody one fromber
and Verlin or come back. Somaybe that's the one. Well and tell
whatever it is, he's got toget right. He's got to get right
on it. And if it hurtsyour feelings, that's okay. We'll get
a little test you because right nowhe's being tested. But he's got to
get right. And I don't carewhere it is, but it's got to
happen. Todd Kallius had a prettyfoment, funny moment late in that game
(01:48:26):

that? It's funny you say thatbecause I got my high school I got

she's a game changer. Man.And for me, Sean, they
talk about her shooting, but Iain't seen nobody throw some bounced pass.
Man. Yeah, she's got greatbasketball IQ and and quart awareness and vision.
Doesn't she special? Man? Ohman? She got a game man

To Shana. I put her upthere with Tiger Woods, Serena Wims.
Some people come along, man,and they is never the same after they
stepped on the scene. Maggie Johnson, Larry Bird, no questions people.
Once they step on the scene, everything else changes. And that's what it

looks like with Clarks. So agreed, I'm excited to watch it, yep.
And she's good for every men andwomen's sports because men now eyes are

what we're doing watching on TV exactly. Yeah, don't want that. Last
night on the broadcast, Todd Kallispretty funny moment him and Jeff blomb.
It was the top of the eighthinning two to one ball game. This
is what Todd Callis had to say. By the way, going back to
Hi Wade comment, if it's twelvetwelve three game in the eighth, you
(01:53:29):
guys do all the waves. Youwant to have have a blast, but
it's this kind of a game we'restirred it up to you. I don't
want the wave. I don't knowa great game. Okay from the players
perspective. To your point what youjust said, I'll explain it is if
the fans were doing the wave inthat situation. It told me that they
we're not focus on the game. That's the only thing I'm to say.
So I'm saying, as your resaid, I'm gonna say this and I'll say
(01:53:56):
it again. Ban the wave.I think does a Todd callus agree with
you? Yes, it was twoto one, two to one in the
game, in a really tight ballgame against the freaking Braves at home,
and you're in a ballgame, andJeff Blum said it perfectly. The players
understand that if they're doing the wavein a two to one game, those
fans are not paying attention to thegame. It's the same fan that spends
(01:54:19):
their time texting the entire game aboutthis. I don't mind if you have
your phone. You got to tellyour fan to take a picture of the
ballpark. But when you're on yourphone for nine innings of a baseball game
a good one, uh huh.I've never understood that time. But I
don't even pull my phone. Imean, maybe to take a picture.
We want to get the nice, all the whole panoramic look of it,
but I don't. Or you're takinga selfie with your family or everybody's I
(01:54:40):
get it, but the whole thing. Will I just stayed home. Then
it makes no sense to me thewave. I haven't done the wave in
thirty thirty years. I'll I willnever stand for a wave. I don't
care. Matter of fact, evenmore so if it's about to win a
World series again, I'm not standingfor a wave. No. I have
now for Yeah, if you're seven, if alls, I see a seven
(01:55:01):
year old stand up eight year old'syoung kids, and I'm all for it.
Stand up kids and let it rip. But it's never the kid that
stands up says let's do the wave. It's not the twelve year old.
It's the grown adults who's pissed atyou when you don't stand up to the
wave and everybody's looking at him like, dude, sits your happy ass down,
happy as it's played out. Likethe music dances, some things just
(01:55:21):
get played out for a while andwe wear them out too much because you
played the same song over and overagain. Take a little break, come
back, Show it to me onceevery four years, and we'll be like,
whoa a little comeback song? Yeah? No, bury it, throw
away the key. The wave sucks. The wave sucks, man, the
only wave we should be worried aboutit is the tasty one right there on
(01:55:43):
the West coast. Get popping itaway and go yeah, tasty waves.
Yeah, may maybe it'spokoli. Okay, let's go get some tasty waves and
go go go surf. You know, Okay, I don't need at the
ball game and people coming old. That's old, good, good good.
Yes, I've stayed the good thatI'm an old head when it to that,
that's a game. I don't care. I don't care if it's fifty
to three. Matter of fact,it's even just as bad because nobody's enthused
(01:56:09):
anymore that you're doing the wave.Sit in your own living room and do
it. Leave the rest of usout of it. Can't confirm c J.
Stroud did not participate in the wavelast night. Well then he gets
it. Plus he's a grown adult, he's not four, all right.
Todd Kaws is doing the Lord's workman on a Monday. Hey, can
(01:56:29):
I hear an a man place?Can I get in? What's in that
Jessica? Can I get an what'sthat country song? There? You go?
The one? Can I get ana shot in? Shut? I'm
like, can I get an amen? It's a I can't you know it's
is it Jessica who sings that song? Can I get an A man?
Can I get it? Can Iget a Yeah? Yeah, that's right.
(01:56:53):
Why can I not find it?I don't know, but you know
who you know the you know thecut him talking about right? Can I
get aujah? Che Yes, that'sthe car. Okay, there you go,
and that's what you need. Thehallelujah. The A man is banned
the wave Hallelujah. Amen. Thenthe next time somebody doesn't. There you
(01:57:16):
go. Dear Lord, forgive mefor I have sinned. I did the
way. Don't do it? Okay, there you go. Eight year olds
have at it. And also, you know you're talking about taking out your
phone and uh you know, gettingpayrint reviews and taking selfies. You mentioned
taking selfies with your your buddies.Sean, we're not taking something. I
don't, dude, I'm not talkingabout me. I'm just saying I don't.
You will not see me unless Ihave to check on my dogs or
(01:57:41):
if I'm at a ballpark, unlessit was to take it out and take
it with. You know, you'retaking a picture of you and your buddies
together walking through at the Crawford boxes. My stone is never coming out.
Yeah, no, I'll have somebodyelse take the photo if my If my
phone does not come out, thatwhy I don't need it at that point
in time. I don't need it. There's nothing, you know. I'm
there for a reason and to watchit. And if it's a blowout,
(01:58:02):
yes what I'm doing. Yeah,if it's twelve to one in the fifth
inning, I'm beating traffic, I'llsee and I'll listen on the radio and
watch the rest at home. Ifit's a close game, there's no reason
to be on it. And ifI got something to say to somebody,
you know what it can do friggin'wait, yeah, exactly. I don't
need that bad That's just me.It's annoying when you look around and it's
like and then the twelve year oldis on his phone at twelve year old
(01:58:23):
with his dad or his mom.Get that generation back of their going to
a ballgame. Man, you're watchingthe World Series type team play. So
that's just me. I don't I'mnot into that. I'm not all That

going on? Hey, how youdoing, guys? Good man? What's
on your mind this morning? Yeah? I just wanted to check me in
real quick on first of all,the wave thing. And we could usually
(02:01:04):
go to a handful of games everyyear and it just seems like it never
fails. I get stuck in asection with these jack wagons doing the wave
and hey, is it? Isit the one? Do you all get
stuck in the section of the dudesthat are starting it? Or are you
just saying like people that actually doit, we get stuck in a say,
and to your point, I mean, usually it's a bunch of families
(02:01:24):
that probably come once a year withtheir kids and you know, so,
I mean, and they're all lookingat me when it goes by it happened,
go, and my wife is lookingat me like, you know,
just just just smile and say, don't worry. Yeah, don't you do
it? Yeah? No, Andso it's usually that and I get it.
It's just you know, like yousaid to the baseball fan, the
pure baseball fan. We're trying towatch the game, and to the people
(02:01:45):
that are doing this, I thinkit's just an event that's a night out.
The baseball game is secondary. Yeah, so it's just it is what
it is. But real quick,I agree, Hunter Browns start tonight is
huge moving forward because we got toget his head straight. If he has
another or if he lays another egglike that, I think you're right buying
that trip down maybe maybe in order. Uh. And it's like I said,
(02:02:06):
I didn't get to watch the endof the game last night. We
had something going on, but itwas two to one when I chimed out
and I looked and saw we gotbeat by whatever. We got beat by
it. So I'm just not surewhat the answer is. I think it's
going to be up and down fora while. We're gonna crank out that
three game winning speak at some point, but we just got to keep grinding,
all right. Guess thanks appreciate it, Mike. I fully believe that
(02:02:26):
if Hunter Brown's start as not goodtonight, and I'm hoping it changes his
fortune tonight. If not, youhave to take him out of the rotation.
I don't care who you put inthere. Tonight's massive for him,
Like there's no question. Stop thisgonna sound I'd start Montero over him.
Think about that. Yeah, that'smy point. I mean that's gonna be
in a bit hyperbolk. Be yougetting my point? I get it,
(02:02:47):
I understand not because over the longhaul, he's not going to be great.
And I'm not quitting on him.Quitting on somebody, you know what,
would be just getting ready, youknow what, turning your back on
him and saying we're not even talkingabout him anymore. That's like we're he's
a done deal. Damn no,no, no, the guy's got too
much stuff to be a done deal. But when you're going through it,
who of us doesn't need a littleswift kick in the rear or a little
(02:03:08):
adjustment, whether it's an attitude mechanics. I told you this last week.
If this continues, five on myfive things that need to be addressed quickly
by the astros. One of themwas Hunter Brown's trip to the minor leagues.
If this continues, yeah, becauseoh if okay, so trip to
the bullpen, fine, or ifyou want to put him in the bullpen
and say give me because we don'twant to crush Seth Martinez's season by constantly
(02:03:30):
running him out there. Fine, but I'm getting to the point if it's
ain't another bad when he gives youtwo and two thirds innings and it's like
this is unbelievable, that it's thenthe mental and the mechanics start to come
together in the wrong way, andthey and it is and it goes south.
You got to get it fixed beforeit festers into a lost season,
let alone a lot a rough monthand a half. If he has another
(02:03:54):
pour outing tonight and they don't movehim to the bullpen or set him down
trip that, then what you're justrolling back out there. Well, here's
what you're saying is well, itbecomes the Abreu factor. You're just running
him out there because you're hoping thathe gets it right. You're gonna let
him learn on the fly. One'sage is different, listen, I don't
know. I also I do subscribeto Brian letting you know what, you
(02:04:17):
pitch yourself out of it. Dude, get Austin. I'm big on not
letting people run from adversity. Ihate that. But there also comes a
point in time when the team's biggerthan the individual. The individual got to
get it fixed, whether it's mechanicalflaw, whether it's tired, whatever it
might be with it. Not justHunter Brown, anybody across sports. I
get that too, that hey,gut it out, get out. But
(02:04:39):
there also then it becomes the pointof diminishing returns. You keep gutting it
out and gutting out, you're digginga hole. And instead of digging a
hole where you're digging on the sideof the of the hole. So you
build steps to get out, you'redigging yourself deeper hole by not building steps,
and you just every time boom again. And I'm convinced that we're on
the verge of that. If thisguy goes out and has another I can't
(02:05:00):
even call it subpar. Dude,Yeah, they've been awful. He's averaged
like two point three innings. Can'tdo it. It's like a little over
two inning. Good. But ifthat's all he can give you, then
he'll be long relief in the bull'sand maybe that's where you that's the stop
on the way to sugarland and see, Okay, get him out of the
bullpen. Let's see if he canregain location and confidence in one inning is
opposed to saying, dude, weneed you for six right now, you'd
(02:05:23):
take four guys. Stuff is toogood to be floundering like this. But
you can't let him keep digging ahole. If it happens, if tonight's
one of those nights, then you'vegot to strongly consider making a move and
moving somebody into a different spot inthat rotation, or bringing somebody up to
fill that. I don't know whereyou get it, but you're gonna have
to and well Verlander and from Oryou're gonna get that question andrewed right and
without you having to really make adecision. It's an easy one. Yeah,
(02:05:45):
when Verlander's back and from Ur back, Yeah, he goes to the
bullpen and if that doesn't work, then he then the cars. The gps
got to be set towards sugar Land. Yeah, if, if, if,
and when Verlander comes back it lookslike he's gonna pitch on Friday,
hopefully, then you're they're gonna havemake a corresponding move to bring him off
the I L there's only one guyyou can take out, yeah, and
that's the guy, Yes, theonly guy you can take rotation. Even
(02:06:08):
if he pitches well tonight, he'sstill the odd man out. There's no
doubt Blanco ain't going anywhere Fromber whenhe's in there, Christian Hobby is there.
I guess maybe you would consider wellstuff, But to me that the
obvious one is is Hunter Brown.I'm not even including Ergatty because it's still
we don't know if this is justholding over until both Fromber and Verlander get
(02:06:30):
back in the first place. Yeah, I would, I would assume.
I don't know. I'm not Suretyis here to stay just yet, right,
that's my point. I'm not.I mean, I think he's got
a great future, but he maybe more tune ups in the minor league
level. But if let's let's puthim to the side of the other guys,
Hunter Brown is the one that youcannot stay in this rotation if this
(02:06:54):
continues, and even if it doesn'tright now and Verlander comes in and Fromber's
healthy, he's the one right nowit's giving you that you say, let's
move to the bullpen, see ifwe can regain something back there. Yeah,
I would say he'd probably be prettygood out of the bullpen. And
we looked at his numbers while youwere on your little conference call, and
uh, I did some quick math. In his career so far as a
(02:07:14):
starter, Hunter Brown average is likebarely over five innings a start and it's
going down by the by in ahurry at these to the start of this
season. I listen. If heregains it, that's nothing but great news.
I want the option of having Igot seven starters. What do I
do? Yeah, right now,we don't have that option. Yeah,
sure don't we meaning the Astros. We're going to turn our attention to the
Texans and out real quick before weget the break. Did you do off
(02:07:36):
season workout programs with the team?Is that like that's not a mandatory thing,
is it? No? I knowit is OTAs, but like they
started training program and stuff. Iwhen I was in San Diego because I
lived there and went there my offseason home. It whenever they required like
a two week peer Like if wetry to come in a lot of guys
show up. You get on aplane and go spend the two weeks throwing.
(02:07:57):
But we didn't have ot AS.We had mini camps. Yeah,
and at the they started to ramplemore time in the off season. And
then there's guys who have incentives. If you show up to the offseason program,
you get an extra fifty thousand, one hundred thousand dollar bonus. Who
of us wouldn't do that, butjust to be around the fellas. But
it was not required. You know, there were times when you're like I
was in my off season home whenit was in Arizona, when I was
playing in Minnesota, that I'd gotrain with a bunch of guys because a
(02:08:18):
lot of athletes are out there,so do that. But anytime they said
we need you here, even thoughit's not mandatory, like you here,
it's the voluntary mandatory thing, whichdoesn't seem to nowadays. Even if it's
voluntary mandatory, guys aren't showing upa lot of times, and some that
are just committed to a will.I just always felt it was good to
be seen and to be around thefellas. I did, and quite frankly,
(02:08:39):
I had a blast who didn't wantto be around the fellas for a
week, like a week vacation.Go there and throw it around a lot
for four or five days, havea cold, and get back and go
back home, get your plan. But you just wanted them to also see,
Okay, this guy's committed this offseason, not only there, but how
your body looked and what she'd beendoing. And I just think it makes
you a better player. I don'tunderstand why guys wouldn't show up at least
(02:09:00):
harshly to their off season program. To be around the guys. Man,
that's got to be pretty pretty cool. Man. You go from like your
Arizona off season home, go upto Minneapolis, throw the throw a couple
of routes, hang out with thefellas, sit down, have a little
oe, and a couple of Marlboroughreds. Oh yeah, grits, A
couple of grits, couple of lungdarts. Yeah, man, talk shop,
and then head on back to Yeah, went back to Arizona. Hurt,
(02:09:22):
Yeah, didn't hurt. Knocked downanother grid on the plane? Yeah,
back where they used to the aircondition will blow it up front?
Oh yeah, nuts. I wasaround then, Okay, and I saw
that. Yes, they used tosmoking on planes. Hey, the guy
in front of you is with thewind blow the air condition blowing. Hey,
man, that's not gonna affect you. Sure it's not on the roll
behind him? Okay, my eyesare puffed out. I'm twelve, and
(02:09:45):
if people are smoking grits on aplane. And back then, Saint Belle,
you know, nobody was telling youabout your seatbelt or whatever. Man,
well whatever, it's a man,and people walk your Hell, they
didn't only walk up to the tothe gate. They walk you down the
hallway to get on the plane. They say, oh, see it a
couple of days. Enjoy your youryour vacation with your buddies and their family.
And the person in front of youprobably has Marl Burls. You could
probably bum one while you're nine,Okay, gosh. I remember being a
(02:10:11):
kid man and my parents would alwaysplay uh Friday night poker with uh the
Kelly family back in the backside ofthe neighborhood, and they used to all
smoke together inside the house while playingpoker. They'd be like ten of them,
all ripping SIGs and it's like it'sgets stuck in the walls and then
you can never get it out.I'm trying to take a nap on the
couch because it's ten o'clock a nightand I'm tired, little eight year old,
(02:10:31):
and they're just ripping. I can'teven imagine. And the and there
you walk into the crib and theywalk in the crib and it looks like,
you know, the smoke after youlight fireworks. That's what it's like
hovering around your living room. Hey, oh, I need two cards,
Give me two cards and just playpoker. Give me two I need two.
Yeah, and they're just puffing awayto grit. And my mom didn't
drinking drinking my two swine or somesheep vodka, or my mom used to
(02:10:54):
drink white Russians. Oh, whodoesn't like a white Russia? Right?

Back to the Sean Salisbury Show onSports Talk seven ninety The Sewan Salisbury Show.
The Texans kicked off their offseason workoutprogram yesterday. Demiko Ryans spoke to
the media talked about the upcoming draft, which is next week. This is
what coach Ryan's had to say.But when you look at the draft and
(02:13:01):
how we approach it, we approachit the same. Right. We go
through, evaluate all the positions andtry to have a good feel for the
guys that we would like to addto our team. And like we don't
just because we've added guys at alot of different positions, that doesn't stop
us from evaluating every position and lookingat every avenue to continue to upgrade our
(02:13:24):
team and continue to get our teambetter. So for the draft process,
our process will be exactly the same. Who can we add to our team
that adds value to our locker roomas value to us on the field.
Don't hate to valuate and don't hateadd value. Value is everything you know
(02:13:45):
where he gets that value from. That's a Nick Saban talk. What do
you bring Like when a player isa backup and wants to says I should
be the starter save he wants to. Okay, what value bringing coaches do?
And it's not just value on x'sand o's. It's value on leadership,
it's value on overcoming adversity. It'svalue in the locker room. It's
(02:14:07):
value when you're not starting. Doyou are you a I call it being
a truck or a trailer. Youwant to be the truck, you damn
right, you do. Now,everybody needs pulled along at some point,
but the key is not to dropan anchor while they're pulling you, or
you slow the whole thing down anddisrupt it. So you want to be
a truck, not a trailer.And if you've got a bunch of trucks,
(02:14:31):
guess what. Every now and thenthere may be a straggler, load
the monolis's go and what happens isthat strength and numbers. Even on a
football team. I'm just telling you, when a bunch of guys are doing
it, you know what, thefour or five guys that aren't doing it,
they either jump in and say,you know what, I got to
do this because I'm watching them.I want to hang around. That's how
you do it. You ask abunch of questions, and the one or
two extra stragglers, guess what they'refind themselves in August cut looking for another
(02:14:52):
team or another job, whether it'shere anywhere else. If you set the
standard like that, so you're lookingfor trucks, not trailers, and you're
looking for guys who add value, and some of the best value on the
planet in your draft happens after thefirst round. They're not drafting dudes in
this draft. They're not looking forhope. They're drafting guys with full evaluation,
(02:15:16):
as if they had a first roundpick, and who's going to make
my team better? Inevitably somebody that'sstarting is going to miss a game or
two in the fall. You hopeit's not a long term you get lucky
and stay healthy. But when thathappens, you know what, the second
round, a third or fourth roundpick that made the team's gonna have to
do play. Look what happened tothe linebacker who is here is now in
(02:15:37):
Minnesota. No, the Blake Cashman, your your your big stud gets hurt,
you become a starter. Now yougo get paid at another place and
had tackle after tackle aft tackle. He's the guy that was ready that wasn't
a first round draft pick built, and you know what he's gonna do in
Minnesota. They'll start him, he'llperform, and he'd be and now he's
(02:16:00):
created value not only for himself butfor wherever he goes. The reason I
use him is because he's not thehighly pubb Look at Grenard came here,
created value. Grenard got paid becausehis m got paid. And you see
improvement Sackwiites for the most part everyyear. So coming here, you don't
think. You don't think Daniel Hunter'sbringing value to this team. And then
(02:16:22):
people are always watching how those guyswork and what they do and bring to
the locker room. So you haveto there's your team a lot of times,
and your draft will be judged notjust by the first round guy.
The overall draft will be usually judgedby the entire body of work. And
it's a tougher task when you don'thave a first round pick, But I'll
tell you what, it's also satisfying. Teams grow fast when you can build
(02:16:43):
it within that Your second round pickdidn't fold up and was a horrible pick,
and a year later you went andgot a free agent and you're like,
damn, what a waste that wasyou don't want that to be the
case. No, I still I'mcurious as to what they're going to do.
Says they don't have a first roundpick, Like, what kind of
guys they're not trading up? Idon't think they're going to defend. They
(02:17:03):
gotta have go get it some kindof defensive background, and I would say
probably the extra linebacker up and somebodyin the back end for sure. And
then you know, do you doyou scramble in the third round? Do
you grab alignment? Do you gotI think that you always want win in
doubt, in my opinion, winand out grab me a big fell up
front that can they can make adifference, and then the perimeter. But
I always say, for me withthis, what if all of a sudden,
(02:17:26):
third round rolls around and a receiverthat you liked, that you had
them in the second round but youwanted somebody else there shows up. Greed,
brother, Yeah, I'm all aroundgreed about points points points, points
points. But I think the bethe depth on the back end and stout
in the interior. Continue to growthat because inevitably those bodies beaten on you.
(02:17:46):
You're gonna the rotation. The moreguys rotate there and they do in
the back end because you need anickel and dime. If they got If
the team's got three good receivers andyou've got two good corners, I'm already
at a disadvantage. I would imagineyou will see a corner slash, that
type of defensive player drafted fairly early, depending on what they're doing. And
they're not drafting for their health. They're drafting to make the team healthier.
(02:18:09):
And I think that you're you'll seethat. But listen, once you get
by the first round, dude, unless it's a heavy need, best available
and if you've got a plethora ofgreat pass rushers in the second round,
pick shows up and a guy whowas supposed to be a first rounder and
he's sitting there, and guess whatyou do? You draft him. I'm
a big best available guy unless theneed is overwhelming at a position. Plethora
a good word, Yeah, itreally is a solid one solid word before
(02:18:31):
nine o'clock. Really good, reallyreally good. Uh. CJ. Stroud
spoke to the media yesterday and hetalked about the offseason workouts that he's already
had. He's been working out withStefon Diggs and Tank Dell back healthy,
back working out with the team. What did the quarterback have to say about
that. Let's get into the nineo'clock hour and discuss it on Sports Talk
seven to eighty. Okay, let'sdo this. Sean Salisbury usc true longtime
(02:19:01):
friend Shown Salisbury, Ryan Lon Lima, Go Lobo. This is the Sean
Sells Very Show. Speaking to themedia, he talked about some off season
workouts. Tank Dell obviously rehabbing,he's back fully healthy, working out with
the team. He worked out uhwith c J. Stroud and Steffan Diggs
(02:19:22):
over in LA And this is whatc J. Stroud had to say about
those workouts. I was very excited. I met him at the Pro Bowl
and you know, just gone tomeet each other, to meet you know,
his kids, and you know,to see what type of person he
was, and you know, justbeing able to grow our relationship from there.
You know, it's really cool justto be able to not only go
from that scene to now him beinga teammate of mine and just really excited
(02:19:46):
to get to work with him.So that's actually c J. Stroud talking
about playing alongside Steffan Diggs and Sohere is uh, here is CJ talking
about the the workouts with Tank Dellin l A. It was great.
Yeah, you know he's he's likeyou said, man, he's gotten a
lot better mentally. You know,I think either for both of us really
(02:20:09):
all the rookies no coming in ayear too. You know, everything's starting
to slow down and the wheels areturning so much up up in your head.
You know, you're starting to playball, and you know, having
a being able to throw with himin LA was really big. And you
know, Mention looks amazing as well, and some of the guys that came
out as well. So you know, it's been amazing to get some work
(02:20:30):
in. Can you talk a littlebit about the wheels turning as a rookie
and how he kind of mentioned himand Tank Dale both where the game starts
to kind of slow down a littlebit. The wheels aren't always turning.
Listen, man, you're having tryingto learn offense and get yourself right in
a short period of time in anoffseason and then go apply it to eleven
(02:20:50):
on eleven in the fall in fallcamp and then you roll in listen,
and this is a compliment the greatest. Listen, and I'll just speaker from
year one to year two. Justthe mental and emotional part of the playing
the position. Understanding what you're lookingat is a world of difference. In
a light switch, I don't wantto say it fully goes on the boy,
(02:21:11):
it's brighter and it is as arookie, you think about it,
he still has no idea how toplay, how he's really going to play
now, his talent and where tothrow the fall. He's just got his
DNA and everything he's done to putthe work in to be ready. But
my man, if he stays healthyand they continue to build this, you
haven't seen anywhere near the football he'sgonna make. And the decisions here's what
(02:21:33):
happened. A decision that may maytake a half a second or a second
now comes down because you're you're anticipatingmore you're seeing. So it's one thing
for me to learn all the verbageon my own team and my own offense.
Now I got to go in andlearn every single defense, study every
coordinator, know every coverage. Sonow I've learned mine and I got to
play it in September. I don'thave a learning curve of CJ. Shoudt.
(02:21:54):
You're starting me from day one?Why because you earned the job and
rightfully so. So what he's talkingabout is the lights, which going on
about understanding just how your own teammateswork and your own offense and what Bobby
Sloke's trying to do. But onthe other side is how to attack coverage
and get through your progression so it'seven more urgent without being hurried, and
(02:22:15):
then you're settled in like, Okay, I've seen this before. Everything was
a first for him last year.Everything's the first, even though you may
have seen some of it in college. I got news for a brother.
It moves a lot faster. Highschool to college is wild factor. College
to the NFL is enormous, andguys who get it and go to work
(02:22:37):
one season doesn't may listen. Ifhe goes out and flounders and plays poorly,
you know what they're going to sayseeing this movie before he goes out,
and so you're trying to fight againstthat. All the great stuff that's
happening. If he's able to lockin, which I think he is,
and realize he hadn't played his bestfootball yet, there's much work to do.
We're in for one hell of atreat over the next. Well,
(02:22:58):
he'll be the best player here sinceWarren Moon left this city. And he
is, and I know that's highpraise, but he's already got those instincts
you can see. And so nomatter how much success you have, he's
still playing on ability and a littlebit. He's playing on a quarter of
a tank right now because he's hewas a rookie that it goes to half
or three quarters of a tank nowand it just the gas tank keeps filled
(02:23:20):
up. And you know what itdoes. It stays filled up because now
you understand, even in a badthrow, you understand what they're trying to
do. It's like a golf Firsttime you play golf, you hit a
ball snap hooked? Did you knowhow you did it? You're like,
I have no idea how to fixit? Well, these pro golfers,
now, okay, slight lower slightleft hand adjustment for right here. Oh,
now the ball's drawn. They knowimmediately the fix. I mean now,
(02:23:43):
applying it in a tournament when you'rechoking on your own spit it a
gush a different story, but theyknow by ballflight the immediate fix without somebody
telling him. When you get tothat point as a quarterback, even though
you want people to help you tinker. Now you're at a different you are
at a completely different level of playin the position right now. He was
a beginning golfer last year, nowbeginning golfer the does how to win his
(02:24:05):
rookie year on tour. Now he'sthe second year guy who's won three or
four times, and it's like,I'm going for the major, and we
know what the major is in theNFL. I'm telling you the picture is
clear, the difference between year oneand year two, and the clear picture
from a quarterback position. If you'regrinding like he is with his skill set,
no one had to fix it.Quicker as a big part of it.
(02:24:28):
And that's part of what he's talkingabout in my mind as well.
You believe in sophomore slumps. Ibelieve in people watching you and saying,
okay, I know how to attackhim a little more. But I think
they exist. But I don't know. I think it's just the reason we
call sophomore slump. I believe sometimesthat if you're successful as a rookie,
you can get comfortable as the secondyear guy thinking you've arrived. I'm not
(02:24:48):
saying it's on you're arrogant, butwe do if it's just natural. If
we talk about, well, theguy's gonna lose his confidence if he doesn't
have great success. Isn't it justone hundred and eighty degrees the other way?
If he has great success, wouldn'the be a little bit The natural
reaction would be, I'm pretty damngood when you're sitting at home alone not
telling anybody, So you got tofight again. You have to grind as
hard with success as you did withthe failure, meaning smarter and prepare so
(02:25:13):
you can stay there. We're notjudging quarterbacks on one We're judging them on
their level of consistency and greatness overa long period of time. I can
find any swinging unit to go outand have one good season, maybe not
quite like his as a rookie, but you get my point. The key
is elevating, and to me,I'll know when the quarterbacks arrive on those
decisions. But as we saw itlast year, in the sustain of that
people want to come player, butthat you make everybody better, they elevate
(02:25:37):
their study habits, they elevate theiroff the sea off season have just by
your presence. You don't have totell them. Warren Moon like I always
refer to him, but these onedidn't. And if Warren finally said,
hey, we're having a workout, like you guys there, you know what
that means. You show your assup and if you don't, all you
have to do is run into thenext day. He didn't even say anything.
Message sent right, and it justmakes it. He's the game in

that if you're successful as a rookie, you can get comfortable as the second
year guy thinking you've arrived. I'mnot saying it's on you're arrogant, but
(02:32:46):
we do. It's just natural. If we talk about, well, the
guy's gonna lose his confidence if hedoesn't have great success. Isn't it just
one hundred and eighty degrees the otherway if he has great success, wouldn't
he be a little bit The naturalreaction would be, I'm pretty damn good
when you're sitting home alone not tellinganybody. So you got to fight again.
You have to grind as hard withsuccess as you did with the failure,
(02:33:07):
meaning smarter and prepare so you canstay there. We're not judging quarterbacks
on one We're judging them on theirlevel of consistency and greatness over a long
period of time. I can findany swinging unit to go out and have
one good season, maybe not quitelike his as a rookie, but you
get my point. The key iselevating and to me, I'll know when
the quarterbacks arrive on those decisions. But as we saw it last year,
in the sustain of that people wantto come player, but that you make
(02:33:31):
everybody better, They elevate their studyhabits, they elevate their off the sea
off season have just by your presence. You don't have to tell them.
Warren Moon like I always refer tohim, but he's one. And if
Warren finally said, hey, we'rehaving a workout, like you guys there,
you know what that means. Youshow your ass up and if you
don't. All you have to dois run into the next day. He
(02:33:52):
didn't even say anything. Message sentright, and it just makes you raise
the game in the bar. He'salready raised the bar. Now that the
bar's there, keep there and raiseit even more. And he's got the
rare ability to do that. Wesaw it so light. Sweet, I'm
just telling you, brother, it'sa much brighter switch in year two from
year one. And you say,how Sean, you don't watch and see
you're going to see just how sosophomore slump. No, I just believe
(02:34:15):
you're in your second year and peoplefigure it out a little bit better and
you haven't made enough adjustments from rookiearto year. It happens all the time,
and then a guy comes back andplays great in year three. He
adjusted to that. Failure is gonnahappen. But failure doesn't mean a lifetime
sentence. You can you can overcomea failure. Failure is just a temporary
thing, just like motivation is disciplineand sustaining good to be able to get
(02:34:35):
out of it quicker is the mostimportant thing. And don't you don't you
know you're not mired in slumps ona regular basis at quarterback or you lose
your job. That's not the dangerhere. The danger is how high is
this elevation going to go? Yeah, and coming back this year, you're
gonna have a lot of offensive lineand returning they should have a better offensive
line for him. And you knowwhat they do. There's so much pride
they now start to take the prideof this isn't our rookie quarterback. We
(02:34:56):
don't know where we're going. Thisis you hit my quarterback late. We're
fight right, And you watch themchase guys down, pull guys off the
pile, and say and willing torisk getting kicked out of a game.
I know it sounds crazy. That'swhy you need depth of the position.
Willing to be risk and getting kickedout of a game to protect your guy
from getting cheap shots and getting hit. Because you know what, we know
now that the way to beat theHouston Texans is somehow, some way.
(02:35:18):
You got to find a way notto let that guy get the ball out
of his hand forget hit and whenhe throws it, we saw enough of
that. You got to find away to put it in third and forty
because that dude's got everything you wantin a quarterback and enough movement and like
Burrow to buy time to create andthat's buying time in the pocket as well
and coverage. His biggest advance forthis year, Brian will be his ability
(02:35:41):
to see what's happening on the defensiveside. It's pretty refreshing to talk about
when it comes to the success ofand it's a hell of a watch.

We're gonna have to turn this matterover to Sean Oh no more. Sean
Salisbury on Sports Talk seven ninety talkingTexans in the NFL. Seven one three
two point two five, seven ninetythe number to join. Let's talk to
Ray. Ray. Good morning, welcome in, Hey, good morning guys.
Always good to hear from you.Guys. Good morning. So I
(02:37:52):
want to make a couple of commentsand hang out showing me like I normally
do. But you guys are mentioningthe sophomore slump. I hear a lot
of people saying it's not always apromise that a quarterback should have a sophomore
slump. When you look at guys, guys like having my Holmes, you
(02:38:15):
can probably say Dak Princecott, guyslike that they didn't have sophomore sumps.
If you're just a good quarterback andyou're just it, then it's not a
guarantee that you're going to have asophomore slump. I think I think CJ
just gets it, and I don'tsee he's not the quarterback that that to
me, seems like you would haveone because what he processed information at the
(02:38:37):
line of scrimmage, his decision makingand everything it's just it's just way ahead
of his time, and you don'tsee that happening. I don't see a
regression. I think the Dolphins willbe just fine. You know. I'll
hang up and listen and see whatyou guys have to say. I love
the receiving corps as well, solooking forward to some big things. But
you guys take care of that.A great day, you know what,
(02:38:58):
Ray, I am one hundred. There are those guys, and I think
he's one of them as well.Great players can see any coverage, can
play in any system, and theyjust make the system better. And I
think that's the case with him.I sophomore slump. Would he consider a
slumpy through one less touchdown or aphenomenal seasoning through five more? Yeah,
I'm with you. Sophomore slumps arefor the inconsistent guys who get it sometimes
(02:39:22):
don't get it all the time. The great ones, they may go through
better statistical seasons, which sometimes doesn'tpaint the whole picture either better or worse.
You can still be making progress.I think with the expectations in the
bar, this guy's set is sohigh. I'm with you. I do
not expect to no no offense He'snot some of those quarterbacks that you saw
(02:39:43):
have sophomore slumps over the course theircareer and they could have gone on to
greatness. He's He's better than alot of those guys that were decent or
good as rookies, but not asgood as him. He's just a different
level. And you can't compare theworld the quarterback world the second your guys
to him, comparing to the wayit usually works out now, I should
expect to see quantum leaps from hisperformance. I don't know about the team
for Carolina with with Bryce Young inhis performance, if he's who they thought
(02:40:07):
they were, the football savant that'sbeen used before with you know, and
I give you air quotes, sowith him, so I am. But
with CJ. Stroud did, we'retalking a different level player. I wouldn't
expect a full on season slump atany point in time in his career.
The mere mortals do that. Thisguy's taking his level, his game to
a pretty different level as far asrookie quarterbacks go. There's nothing about him
(02:40:31):
that said rookie other than his contractlast year. In his performance, I
mean his his contract which is undera rookie contract, nothing about his performance.
You've pointed out you would I showedyou him he didn't know what he
was in and you were just watchingfootball, you'd say he'd been in a
league a long time, right,Yeah, you definitely could tell if he
was a rookie at pretty much anypoint last season. Ready for the big
news out of the NFL. Iam, this's just announced. The NFL
(02:40:56):
has announced that Applebee's is now thenew official grill and bar sponsor of the
NFL. Love it, So they'rethe that's a big announcment. So it's
the it's the what sponsor of theNFL, the new restaurant sponsor, the
new official grilling bar sponsor of theNFL. So does that mean? So
(02:41:22):
when they when they're up there andwe're talking and like they're doing a game
brought to you by Applebee's, that'sso that's the one. All right?
Good apple Bee's got some coin then, I mean apple they got some coin
because that best. So that's alot of corporate money there. Good for
Applebee's. H I'm Sean Salisbury forApplebee's, and I know good good restaurants
(02:41:43):
and bars, grilling bars. Yeah, Applebee's. I feel it's already there.
Let's go Applebee's. I mean youhave been to one? Yeah,
why are you laughing? Applebee's dude? Whoa, whoa? What are we
doing? So if you said itwas Denny's, you'd be okay with it.
(02:42:03):
Or that's Apple's, Well, what'swrong with you? Can we get
a Chili's thrown in there? Maybemaybe some people think got Maybe they think
TGI Friday has already had his run. You're telling me right now, right
this second multi year partnership agreement,as we sit here today, you're telling
me you're down on the Applebee's NationalFootball League official sponsor of the Bar and
(02:42:26):
Grill grilling bars, the grill andBar, Barn Girl grilling Bar. They
put the vitals first. They don'thate apple bee That's everybody's local neighborhood grilling
bar. Is it Apple's? Yeah? When was that time you went to
an applebe sean in truth? Exactly? What is that? They had had
(02:42:48):
had maya town of Escondido. Theyhad the pictures of like local they call
them local heroes. They call themlocal heroes. So football pictures of high
school and college. I mean theyhad a all of I don't know what
they call the wall fame. Fora decade, me and a handful of
other guy's pictures were hanging in Applebe's. That's pretty cool. So that's the
last time I went. So I'vegot affinity for Appleby's. The other ones
(02:43:09):
who actually thought I was good, you know Jersey doubt they were always they
treated us great. Yeah, sothat's a local Escondido apples. Then when
they redesigned and stuff, they're puttingother stuff there, But it was it
had to be at least a decadethat a handful of us were in there.
So I had my own part ofthe wall with my high school,
college, NFL career pictures, anduh, it was a nice celebration.
(02:43:31):
So that I have an affinity forApplebee's because they I had a fool They
thought I was good because they weremy hometown restaurant. Because of you know,
they rallied around as high school playersand guys who had careers that were
from that hometown. You want tohear what the chief marketing officer at Applebee's
Grill and Bar said, your damnrights idea Joel Yashinsky all right says,
(02:43:54):
quote applebee fans are NFL fans, which is why We were excited to bring
America's favorite grill and bart together withAmerica's number one sport in a way that
will create a fun and engaging experiencefor all. We have the best food
and drinks to enjoy while watching games, whether dining at our restaurants or enjoying
Applebee's to go at home from America'sfavorite boneless wings, mozzarella sticks, and
(02:44:16):
more to a wide range of barofferings. There's no better place than Applebee's
to enjoy watching football. We can'twait to provide great experiences, enough opportunities
to our fans. End quote. How do you like the mask? I'll
tell you what you want? Youwant to you want to go watch a
text? You want to host theTexans watch party? You know where to
go? Brother? What's wrong withyou? Applebee's Grilling bar? Baby,
(02:44:37):
Me, Me and Applebee's babe.Yeah, we're partying today, Sunday fun
days. Look what apple Bees boys? You know? You know what it's
all about. First of all, when's last time you walked through an Applebee's.
Dude, It's spent college. Weused toe to apples on road.
Okay, so it was good enough. This was free, all right?
(02:45:00):
So let me ask you. Sohow about it? How about you go
and take a test drive before youstart to bury. Applebee's. You want
to go out, Yeah, Idon't even know where's the nears apples.
I don't know, okay until Ibuild my bar and grill that Applebee's is
a place to go for you,right, Applebee's. Let's find an Applebee's.
You remember to spell it for you, dude. There's there's one,
two, three, four, there, there's six great in the city.
(02:45:22):
Then you'll have a chance to getto one. Okay, so go find
that one way up north of Conro. There you go, go get yourself
up to Applebee's, test it out, and then come back and report back
and let us know. You know, how are the wings the victials.
I'll do it for you to I'llgo with you. I'll treat yes,
so you can get a taste ofmaybe a good egg roll. I mean,
what do they call not that youdo they have the cheese rolls?
No? What are those things called? You get them cheese egg rolls,
(02:45:43):
But they're like they're they're breaded witha like an egg roll in it's like
a Hamburger egg roll. What's withthe side? No, you'll get them
at Chili's too. Yeah they havethe egg roll. Yeah yeah, something
like that, right, yeah, like that or South south right southwest Edgros
something like that. Test them all, kind of go through the menu and
see if you lift the beers coldenough for you. Oh no, there's
there's an Applebee's up in near Tomball. There you go. So because you're
(02:46:07):
like, Applebee's is the official grilland bar of guess what, Applebee's did
more than anybody else, probably coins, thank you. All right, so
they're gonna they're gonna go all inon this, and you know what,
you'll be watching a game in Applebe's. You will, yes, you will.
Fright. Applebe's calls and wants usto do an endorsement for him for
(02:46:28):
a year. Okay, by theway, when Applebee's, when you call
being the guy who was what ahometown hero is they called me, which
I was no hold down here, but let's ride with that one. Yeah.
And when you call in, thenational marketing guy says, you know,
we want to get into local. That's what Houston. They got a
championship team. Let's go to thebroadcast team. Apple Bee's. They just
want you to know make it mine, not his. Okay, take the
(02:46:50):
money out of his pocket. Hescrewed the pooch. I've told him how
great it is. So you knowwhat, when you called it'll say you
just say Who's it's the Sean soundswe show with him and him and Tripoli
and who over that other guy doesn'tmatter about him. And when we said
free food, he's not. Youdidn't get You don't get these damn cheese
sick. Tell you what, man, there's a lot of places that I
(02:47:13):
want to go to watch a footballgame on Sundays, and Applebee's number one
on my list now that I knowis the official sponsor of the NFL.
I mean, come on, man, that's the way to shift that aaradigm
shift and a little attitude change,a little last kissing, and listen,
I mean, dude, listen tothe Senior vice President of Sponsor Sponsorship Management,
Tracy Rodberg. She says, quoteApplebee's shares the league's commitment of providing
(02:47:39):
best in class game day experiences, and we're thrilled to be able to bring
our fans together with Applebee's in themonths and years ahead. End quote why
are you laughing? Come on,man, it's Applebee's. So you're probably
say someplace like about wings that you'dtell me, and I'd say overrated,
And it's probably some big name place. And and I'll leave it out if
I have an opinion right now, because I'm not going to bury somebody.
(02:48:01):
But you're just calling your favorite wingstopwing place. You just named it.
It's wingstop. Yes, it is, fuckers, and I got I think
there's a lot of good I cantell you what the ranch dressing, your
blue cheese dressing you dip them inis that wingstop did not even close?
The ranch is the most important partof the meal, Yes, sir,
Hey, the two most wingstop. And I'm gonna tell you another good one
(02:48:24):
is frigging out back steakhouse. FriggingI want to buy it, like fifty
gallon drums, I do. Iagree. So that's it. So really,
there's a lot of good wing places. I know people, so why
make them better at home? ButI get all that. Yeah, but
if you're talking about like a place, regular place, I put it this
way. If I'm ordering Wings towatch the Astros play on a Saturday,
(02:48:45):
I'll call wing stop first, firstplace. I until somebody proves me better
over a consistent amount of time, with all the different flavors of garlic,
palm, whatever, and until somebodymatches their ranks. The only ranch I
have tasted when you dip the tasteas good as that is. Every everybody
that has ranch dip out back shouldbe selling their ranch dip to whoever wants
(02:49:05):
it dipped in their their wings orif you're dipping French fries whatever it is,
you put ranch on. That's theone. Yeah, there's nothing better
than dipping your your flaming on anda good thing at ranch right at outback.
Have you got it? Well?Yes, by a still, get
you a steak from outback after you'vehad that nice salad or you know a
little salad or maybe a blumin onion, their cheese fries, whatever it is,
(02:49:26):
and then you get the steak.Dude, you take that steak and
you dip it in that ranch.Okay, now I'm not going to tell
you to do that with your tomahawkthat you made it home. But if
you're looking for a change up pitchand you're putting steak, you know,
sauce in your steak, dip itin ranch and watch your and and watch
you said, don't do it andwatch watch your flavorship grow knock you down
(02:49:48):
at fasts? Am I not rightabout? Am I not right about?
Outbacks ranch? Their ranch is phenomenal. It's very underra just you might as
well take it to your hips andyour ass because it's that. That's when
you know it's and it's not runny. It thick enough where it sticks on
the wing when you pick it up, so it's not all over your bib.
Yes, fiel me. Doctor Applebee'snamed the official grill and bar of
(02:50:09):
the National Football League the NFL.Crazy stuff, Sean. You know when
I'm dipping wings into ranch and youget ranch in your eye, kind of

do it is get rid of yourglasses in contact so they don't fog up

(02:50:31):
you can't see because you need glasses, well, if you get Lasik procedure
in great eye care, like doctorJeff Witze, well, guess what.
That's all solved. Okay, that'sall sold and you don't have to mess
with it. Can you imagine howto your green contact in and a piece
of ranch hits yet? See,if you got lasik, you're good to
go. Just wipe it off andkeep it moving. Son. All right,
there you go, and wits itVision can provide the expert. He's

(02:52:41):

(02:53:28):
Yeah, I'm gonna go home watchit the day. In her case,
in her case, horrible would fitwhere she was as a she's a
little bit freaky. So while you'reat while you're asleep, she you know,
cops feels and stuff on one ofthe guys and he works for her,
so she's like, uh, shewants him, and and you know
it's it's obviously fun comedy. Butshe is like a she's like a zoid,
(02:53:54):
and while she's working on your teeth, she's making sure she doesn't use
teeth, if that makes sense.Yeah, I am right. What a
year do you think Horrible Bosses wasreleased? Two thousand and five or six?
No, two thousand and eight, twenty eleven? Oh okay, I
can't believe it's been thirteen years.Yeah it was. Okay, so it
(02:54:15):

(02:54:37):
movie game? Are you kidding me? Unbelievable? Well, the thumb's pointing
at himself. Okay, the thumbis pointing at himself. Believable. You
know what we gotta do. Weought to have a movie quiz for Triple
E every Friday. Lest what weshould do Okay, Trubly, we know
we've done this before with Brian ina he caught up on about twenty five
(02:55:01):
movies that he'd never seen before, and I know he's grateful for that.

gets even for guys that killed hisfamily. Yes, yeah, that's uh
man, great, that is phenomenalmovie too. It's gonna be epic.
But no, he said it's gonnabe biblical. What movie was that?
Yes, there you go. Bothof those Gerard Butler movies are if you
(02:56:26):
want action and the twists and turns, and Denni Thieves is off the charts
then of course. I mean youknow Fletch, that was movie number one.
Do you love it, dude?Yeah? Yeah, triple So.
What we used to do here onthe on the show is I don't have
a very good, uh movie background, if you will. And him and
(02:56:46):
Ryan used to give me a hardtime all the time about movies because I
couldn't catch their movie quotes, whichI have a lot of movie quotes myself,
but it's, uh, it's notThe bandwidth isn't as wide as him
and Rhinos. There he did aquiz, a movie quiz every Friday,

of It's funny, great, JasonBateman's hilarious. Yeah, it's just a
great that that crew is phenomenal. So as long as everybody's having fun,
you know what I mean? Yeah, like tonight in the Ashles Braisee game,
I just hope both teams have fun. No, I don't. I
hope they're miserable. As long aswe win. And if even if the
(02:57:30):
Astros are miserable in the win,I'm okay with that. Just win,
Just win, baby, just winbaby. Yeah? Is what did vincel
Bardi say? Winning's not Winning's notwinning? Isn't? What do you say?
Winnings? Everything? Winning is notthe one I don't even know it's
isn't. It's the only thing. It's the only there you go, that's
(02:57:50):
right, Winning is there. It'sthe only thing meaning And I get there.
Go win. Give me an uglyloss versus a pretty win and I'm
all in any day of the week. So yes, win at all costs
tonight, sure of hurting somebody. You never win a game unless you beat
the guy in front of you.The score on the board doesn't mean anything.
Well no, man, yeah no, but if you win, but
you know what if you beat theguy. But no, if you beat
(02:58:11):
the guy in front of you,you know what usually happens. Yeah,
if mostly, if you're winning mostof your battles, individual battles, the
team battle wins. So yeah, winning isn't everything. It's the only thing
that's exactly right. While you learnlessons when you're younger, at this stage,
it's winning and the astros need togo get this win tonight. I
just make everybody happy. Even ifit's an ugly one, you'll take it.
You just got to have the rightattitude. What is what? What
(02:58:31):
are you are you giving motivational speechthis morning? Vince Lobardi inspired me.
Man, Yeah, it's not theonly thing. It's everything, right,
Winning isn't everything, it's the onlyYeah, you just had it backwards,
Yeah right, exactly. There yougo, so apply it to your kids,
saying Vince Vince Lobardi, probably notscared. You know, he was
never scared. I talked to I'vetalked to somebody who played for him,
(02:58:54):
and the ship, the stories heshared, his like Hall of Famer where
nothing short of of phenomenal. Andyou're thinking, oh my gosh, I
want to play for him. Butman, you're like a little nervous to
play for him because he didn't hedidn't pull punches. But you know the
impact he made. Love those kindof coaches. Yeah, I mean he's
literally you know, the the trophiesname after him. Yeah, that means
(02:59:16):
you made an impact pretty good andmeans you have the right attitude. There
you go, you love that headtof the right attitude. Control what you
can control. Damn right, that'sright. Absolutely Hopefully they'll control the win
and the control will be plate dominanceor around the plate tonight with movement for
Hunter Brown. Brown's massive start forhim tonight, Let's talk about it next
in Sports Talk seven to eighty.Who's Shan He's the yse eternal judge who
(02:59:39):
sits on high He has the finalsay on all disputes. Back to the
Sean Salisbury Show on Sports Talk sevenninety with us Dan Northley, Chris Cordy
coming up next in about ten minutes. Right at ten a m Astros,
you get back in the win column. Hunter Brown, with a huge outing
(03:00:00):
for himself tonight, has not pitchedwell this season. I can't stay how
big of a start this is forhim. I think it's it's it's as
important as put it this way. This is one of those outside of a
guy coming off an injury in thelast couple of years, Actually this is
important to start this early and somebody'syou see normally say let's let veterans settle
(03:00:22):
in. Our guy's coming off ofyou know, elbow, Tommy John has
been out and he comes out.How does this start going to be?
Where's the pitch limit? This isa This was supposed to be a moving
year for Hunter Brown, right inmy opinion, I said at the beginning
of the season, I still believeit. And we're far from you know,
saying he can't pitch. Of coursehe can pitch. You've seen moments
of it in every game where he'sgot something. We just got to see
(03:00:43):
it sustained more. You've got tohave more success. But it's been a
while since a third year pitcher didstart this important. Has come up this
soon in the season for me atleast for the optics on him, for
his confidence, and for the waythe team I think would look at him
and they may be sold and they'regoing to let him pitch his way through
it all the time. Okay, have had it, but there's some things
(03:01:05):
that need to be fixed because hehas not been sharp at all. It's
been a bad look and it's beena bad performance and he's got to go
out there and get some things fixedquickly if he wants to stay in the
starting rotation, in my opinion, needs to get going. Yeah, there's
no question about it. Seven onethree Final call the show, Tyrone,
what's going on? Hey? Goodenough? Listen, guys, listen,
(03:01:26):
there was something real quick because y'allgot Dana Brown on your show and other
so don't I want to get yourtake on something because in sports you don't
need to be politically correct, andI think it's time Dana Brown, ohs
all the astros sayings y'all get himon your show to point blank? Would
it be inconceivable to just ask himpoint black? Look, how long are
you going to put up with uh? With h brave youth? I asked
(03:01:50):
him that last week, Tyrone.I asked him that last week and he
said what he said, Well,we believe in the back of the baseball
card, basically meaning what a brain'sdone in his past, that he's a
slow starter, and that they're gonnaget him more rest. I'm just telling
you what he told. What hetold me the show. They're gonna lose
twenty time. Everybody says, I'msecretary of hearing people talking about he's getting
(03:02:11):
paid, so we got to playhim. He's getting paid. Look,
they're gonna lose twenty times as muchmoney to pay him as twenty nineteen million.
They're gonna lose one hundred and ninetymillion by playing the guy. And
listen, there was a guy calledlast night on the post game show,
and he echoed my words that I'vebeen saying for a year. The man
is bringing down the team. He'slook at he's a great guy that the
(03:02:33):
clip Hulls loves him. But youcan only pat a guy on the butt
so many times, have three strikesout and does what he does for the
last year and a half. Itisn't just a half a year. The
season runs for six months, notthree months. It's time he's losing money
for the team. He's he's killingthe swag on the team. They know
(03:02:56):
it. That's human nature. It'spsychological. Somebody has last night. Yes,
it's psychological. You can't look aguy on here and say that's great
job. Man. It's over. It's done, and I wish the guy
could start to hit. I wishhe could find a game, but I
believe the game has passed him byand it's time for him to see that.
I know the man's trying. It'sa shame, but that's the way
(03:03:18):
it is. But listen, Okay, so he said, look at the
back of the baseball card. Well, thanks Dana for telling the Astros fans.
That's great answer. But I appreciatethe quar Thanks Jim Carrey. Jim
Carrey was the best debt pan actorsince Robin Williams, y'all were talking to
you. I still think he couldcome up with something off the script.
Jim Carrey better than other than RobinWilliams, than anybody in the business,
(03:03:43):
one of the business. Thank youvery much for the phone call. TYR.
One of the great overactors of alltime. You know he's selling something
down. Jim Carrey back to thespaceball thing. I don't think many people
are arguing no, that Jose A. Brave shouldn't be in the lineup.
I'm not even sure that their ownteam they're giving him. It seems like
a little more rest believes he shouldbe in the lineup every day. I
think we're starting to see the performances. Is obviously a problem, and I
(03:04:05):
don't think there's any doubt great teammatenot a great player, does that make
sense? As I speak, Agreat teammate and there comes a point in
time when that's fine, But lifetimeachievement awards can't keep you in the lineup.
And I think he knows that, and he's probably pressing as hard as
anybody. But at some point timeyou're gonna have to make the hard decision
that he's the fill in guy andthat somebody else is playing first base on
a regular basis and you let themplay through their struggles. That's what's going
(03:04:28):
to have to happen. That that'sa weak point on this team right now.
It's got to get fixed, especiallywith the the the extremes on one
the bad end and the incredible nightwhen they'll hang ten or twelve or eleven
runs on you. But it's theend between stuff where there's there's not a
level of consistency. The extremes aregonna come all the time. The problem
(03:04:50):
is finding that middle ground where theyhaven't found it yet. To start this
season, yep, and it startsto find it tonight. YEP. Starts
tonight with Hunter brown and his outand see if he can get through at
least give us five innings from HunterBrowns. We'll see what happens. They
play the Braves tonight on deck.Show starts at six o'clock right here on
seven ninety. That's gonna do itfor the Shawn Salisbury Show. He is
Shawn Salisbury, our producer Triple Emmanuell R. I'm Brian Lima. Thank
(03:05:13):
you for listening. We're back tomorrowmorning at six a m. Don't go
anywhere. Next up, we'll stayin Northfleet. Chris Cordy coming up next
to the Sports Talk seven ninety
