The Shawn Salisbury Show continued, Welcomeback to the Sean Salisbury Show. You're
on Sports Talk seven. I needshown Salisbury Brown and Leemamanuel Elmore. Let's
welcome in Astros general manager Dana Brownto the show. We do weekly Wednesday

(00:22):
nine thirty visit. And I imagineyou're rolling in here a little bit happier
after another victory, winning close games, extending big leads. I imagine the
day is a pretty good day tostart, and I know there's many more
to come, but been a betterweek so far. Dana. As far
as this baseball club's concerned, yeah, absolutely. You know my thoughts are

(00:45):
you know, as soon as westart to heat up, you know things
were going to turn around. AndI feel like right now and you know,
the bats are heating up, we'regetting pretty good starts, the bulltennis
locked in, and so yeah, good things are gonna happen when you can
do those things. And we talkedabout real quick about Kyle Tucker, and
I remember last year he said youwant to make him an Astro for his

(01:07):
career, which is a great thing. We'll get to that another time.
But the way he's hitting the ball, gap the gap all over the place,
plays gold glove caliber right field,I mean, and does it.
So what looks nonchalant, but makeno mistake, as you know, the
intensity, why is what is maybesomething we don't know about his grind what
makes him so good over and abovethe obvious that we can see with the

(01:29):
naked eye. Yeah, ultimately, excuse me. He's a five two player,
you know, and he can beatyou in so many ways. You
know, he can beat you withthe glove, he can beat you with
his legs, he can beat youwith his power, he can beat you
with his bat, you know, just to hit too itself and so and
then then definitely he can throw,so you know, he's got the five

(01:49):
tools. He's kind of a laidback player, you know, he's not
this flashy type guy. But hecomes and he grinds every day and he
has good at bats. You know, even last night they brought in their
heart thrower with the nasty, filthyslider and you know, he ended up
working out a wall because he didn'tget anything to hit. So he's that

(02:13):
kind of a player, you know. And yeah, he's exciting to watch,
and you know he's a big pieceof what we're doing. Here,
Dana. He doesn't seem like that. Whether it's like if he went on
a role like he is now hittingthe ball all over the ballpark and just
doing what he does, or whenmoney and talk of that contracts involved.
I don't feel from my optics thatthe guy good or bad ever really changes

(02:37):
his demeanor. And that's a goodthing to have that as you talk about
the marathon, he seems like aguy that can handle any stress or any
good stuff that's happening to him bothequally as well. Yeah, good point.
His heart and his stomach is they'reboth always on cruise control. But

(02:57):
his game is always on the upand up, and so you know he's
out there, he's playing. Sometimesyou don't know he's out there because he's
not this flashy guy. But boom, he'll come up in the eighth inning
and get a big hit, orhe'll steal a base, or he'll throw
someone out, or he'll make aplay in the corner, and he's just
even keel and that's how he goesabout his job. For him, it's

(03:22):
like another walk in the park. You know, for us it brings excitement,
of course, yeah, boy,we all need to have that persona
and demeanor and production that Kyle Tuckerbrings to the table. Dana Brown every
Wednesday nine thirty joins us. We'regonna get to Bregman and some other things,
but get to last night on theimmediate side. Here we're trying to
figure out, Dana, you knowwhat happened in La that the glove and

(03:45):
armand last year with the Yankees theytook a glove, replaced it and let
him stay in. And then herelast night with Blanco and the white substance,
sticky substance ejected faces a ten gamesuspension. Do you know, and
I mean this sincerely, do youknow the protocol of why in one ballpark
is there any uniformity to this theoverall get ejected because the sticky stuff approach?

(04:08):
What is the protocol? Yeah?I mean, I just think it's
the Empire's judgment on you know, what he thinks and what he feels if
he feels the glads the sticky Sowe will wait, you know, their
investigation in the outcome. I thinkyou know, if anybody that knows Blanco
and has been watching Blanco, hesweats profusely, right and you could just

(04:30):
see it coming off of him. It's dripping every time out there, regardless
of the temperature outside or the temperatureindoors, whatever the case may be.
And so I think it was probablyfor me just in my evaluation, looks
like a combination of heavy sweat andmaybe the rods and bags. So but
I don't know. They have tocome up with their investigation. Will await

(04:53):
them and see what's happening. Wedon't feel like the spin rates changed,
so there was no advantage there. So the spin rates are pretty much the
same on all of his pitches. So we'll await their investigation and see what
they say. But I was totallyshocked and surprise. You know, I
don't mean he's throwing so well andso you know, I just was totally

(05:15):
in all. So well, we'llfind out what they what they say.
Yeah, Dana, I'm with you. And we were discussing to say,
if spin rate doesn't change, andI got a rosin bag back there for
a reason. I mean, Iunderstand you're not in the rule business and
neither we, but we've got toquestion it. Then what's the big deal.
We've had rosen behind pitches mounds forever. Guys, Sweat you use it

(05:38):
for a reason. If it's notincreasing spin rate and giving you advantage,
and most of the advantages are thehitters anyway, with rules because they want
more scoring in baseball, then whythe rule? Why the rule with rosina?
I welcome the rule on uh,you know, if guys are cheating,
I think, right, you know, we should call them out right

(05:59):
at the end of it. Ithink when guys are cheating, you can
see that there's a definite advantage datawise and those kind of things. And
so they made a judgment call.As to the stickiness, I think if
you get a pitcher who sweats alot, and you got a rosin bag
and you have the cow high whichis the gloves made of I mean you,

(06:19):
I mean you may think it's sticky, you know. And so we'll
find out once MLB conducts their investigation. But we welcome, you know,
we welcome these investigations. We don'twant guys out there, you know,
cheating or using sticky substance or anythinglike that, and so we welcome that.
We don't want anyone to have anymore advantage than we have. So

(06:42):
ultimately we'll wait their investigation and seewhat they come up with. And one
last thing about this, Danny, because we were asked this from a caller,
and I don't know the answer. We figure, I know, they
put the glove away and go intothe where the umpires are. Does that
glove get sealed and shipped off? What's the when when we're waiting on the
suspension, what's the next part oncethe game's over? What do they do

(07:02):
with the glove? Yeah? Ithink you know, they immediately took a
look at the glove, as youguys saw, they did a brief investigation,
and I guess they're gonna, youknow, ship it out and figure
out there's some substance. I guessthat's what you know what the protocol is.
But but we don't know the protocol, right, Dana. That's my

(07:23):
point too. You. I meanwe're kind of we we're thinking we assume
they ship it off and somebody testedsomeplace else. Correct. I'm thinking that
there's some type of an investigation that'sgoing on and we will find out on
the on if there were substance andthe suspension if it is ten games,
So what do you what do youhow do you adjust to that? How

(07:43):
do you adjust the pitching staff ifhe's out for two starts, which that's
what it'll be. Yeah, twostarts for me, it'd be tough because
he's been you know, our youknow, our best picture. You know,
in terms of giving us innings. You know, he's four and oh
he's got to get earn run average. He's posting deep in games and so
that you know, anytime you losethat type of production, it will be

(08:03):
tough. So you know, wedo expect or Pd to be back here
soon. You know he'll give ussome good stocks. But you know,
let's hope that you know, he'snot out. So Dan, I know
that stress levels in close games area pain in the ass and they're not
fun. But I'm a big believerthat close games sometimes and maybe all the

(08:26):
time, build more character and knowmore about your team. You learn more
than you do when you win agame nine to two, because the hell,
I can even play when we're winningforty two to ten in a football
game. So with that, doyou follow that belief that went in a
two to one game when you hadto grind it out and a pitcher was
ejected? Do they build more characterfootball? I mean for your baseball team
and build more confidence as well?Yeah, I think it builds character,

(08:50):
confidence and all of that. Youknow, it brings some team. You
know, you have to use theentire team in games like that, as
you saw. You know, Kartinicomes in and gets another walk off hit,
So it brings the team together.I think there's a lot of good
I mean, not good for mylevel, right, but it's good for

(09:13):
the team, and particularly when youcome out on the winning side of those
games. I think it gives youconfidence that, look, we're moving in
the right direction. And now withour slow start, now that you know
we're starting to heat up, youknow, five out of our last six,
three in a row, you know, five and a half back with

(09:33):
one hundred and twenty games to go, and you're going to play the teams
that are above you multiple times. So it gives you, you know,
some confidence and you want to getback out there the next day and continue
to streak. But you know, they these games do breed character. You
like to be on the winning side, but the stress level is real.
Yes, that is so I imaginemore for you than any of us as

(09:54):
well. Astros GM Dana Brown fora few more minutes here on his weekly
nine thirty visit on Wednesdays, Dana. He's been so good, but the
struggles is pretty obvious. Right now, what's wrong with Ryan Presley? Yeah,
I mean think about Presley's out him. He threw a bunch of strikes.

(10:15):
He made one mistake right, andthat was the breaking ball that he
threw where a guy hit you know, a week flyball double down the line.
I think if he makes that thewipeout breaking ball, he gets out
of the inning with no problem. And it goes back to what I was
talking about, you know, youknow one week ago, two weeks ago,

(10:37):
three weeks ago. We we haveto get to the point where we
make that pitch right. And soif he makes it, Presley, I've
seen Presley strike out left hand hittersoften with that hard breaking ball down back
foot in it, and then he'sout of that inning. There's nothing right.
I mean, he makes the pitchwhere it's a he should bring the

(11:00):
ball out of half, caught toomuch of the play. Guy didn't even
hit it well, you know,he hit like a little looper down the
line that you know that bounced infor a double. And so I mean
it's all about making making the pitchand I have no question that Ryan Presley,
will you know, we'll get outand get after it and pitch important

(11:22):
innings. You know. Uh,So I have no problem. He's been
like that. He's a gamer,he's done it for years. He's you
know, he's done great things inthis organization. And so I think,
you know, with one hundred andtwenty games left, imagine how well this
guy's going to turn it around. And so I'm not panicked at all.

(11:43):
I believe we picked him up afteryou know, he you know, he
gave up the tie. He callsthe tie tie game and and hater went
to yep, And you know that'swhat teammates do. They pick each other
up. And you know, asI said, it was, it was
a it was a pitch that caughttoo much to strike strike zone and a
guy hit a blueber down the line. You've seen this a million times with

(12:05):
players, and Ryan's a with allappearances, a great team player and move
to the eighth, you know, the eighth slot, or can close if
you need him in the seventh. He's been a great teammate. But is
there a psychological issue, Dana? You know what I'm talking about, Whether
you're in the seventh grade or inpros and you've been around these players for
a long time. Is there afeeling of adjustment period going from closer to

(12:26):
eight and could there be any partof man I got demoted. I've got
to find what happened, because Hater'sgood, I mean that psychological part.
Get into get into his head fora minute, or get into ours.
How that adjustment takes place. Yeah, I think there's an adjustment that takes
place. There's no doubt. Youknow, you're used to pitching high impact

(12:46):
pressure innings in the ninth and yougo to the eighth, and these are
important games. Make no mistake.Every game that Ryan Presley's in it's an
important game. It's a game wherewe either tied over ahead, and so
he's still pitching high pressure innings. It's just the pressure is a little different
when you're pitching the ninth as opposedto the eighth. And so from a

(13:07):
psychological standpoint, I understand that part. But just from a talent and makeup
and grit standpoint, I think he'llget through it. I think, you
know, we we it's magnified. You know, when you get up to
a slow start because now you're ina new role. I think when the
when the smoke clears at the endof the day, you're gonna see Ryan

(13:28):
Presley with the good earn run average, with a good strikeout rate, with
the low hits per innings. Andso I think all of that. When
you look on the back of thecard, as you and I talk about
all the time, you'll see RyanPresley, Wow, got off to a
slow start, but sure enough hada good year, finished strong. The
numbers are consistent was what he's beendoing in the past, and so we

(13:52):
look for that because we know he'sthat talent. Didn't you tell us that
if Alex Bregman heats up that thisteam goes. When I ask about leader,
you unequivocally said his name. Imean the second I finished it was
out of your mouth. And thenyou said, if this guy gets hot,
we'll go where this guy takes us. Pretty validated this past week,
Hunt, you're starting to see differentproduction from him. Absolutely, he's heating

(14:16):
up man, and he's a grinder. I'm telling you, I've been watching
this guy since college, so Ireally have a good feel for what Pregnant
could do and what he means tothe club. And sure enough, you
know he heats up he can carrythe club. He's our team building guy.
When we have, you know, different things going on in the clubhouse,
guys will feed off of his energy. And when he starts to show

(14:41):
up, I'm telling you, thisteam's going to get rolling. I feel
good about where he is right now. He's getting locked in. He's having
good at bats. You know,he's driving the ball the other way that
you know, the double the otherday that tells you everything you need to
know. You know, the doublethe other day that gets over the right
fielder's head, home run, youknow, the multiple home runs that he's

(15:03):
hit. He's locked in right now. We want to keep him there.
And as he continues to roll.Look, this team is going to continue
to row. And I feel goodwhere we are, the direction, the
push that we're trying to make. And with one hundred and twenty games left,
I'm fired up real quick. Fifteenseconds you're don completely healthy. You're
seeing anything different? Yeah, Ijust think he's a matter. Look these

(15:30):
these sometimes these big power hitters thatcan really hit the ball to all fields.
You know, they get a littlestreaky. I think he's in a
street mode right now. Once he'susually the levels out and he just continues
to dominate as a hitter. Ithink right now he's in the downstreak,
but I think he's on his wayback. You know. Of course they're

(15:50):
pitching them tough, and every pitchit seems like, you know, it's
a fastball where they want it,that sweeper that they throw on the outer
half. They push him in hardwith the fastball. Look, this guy
could hit. Hitters hit, andwe always say hitters hit, you know,
they just he just he's gonna hit. And so he's gonna get to

(16:10):
the power and he's gonna do allthe good things we need to do.
But you know, there's some there'sa point that sometimes when a guy gets
a little cold, you know, the other guys have to pick him up,
and that's what the teams do.But I'm not worried one bit about
your and on. I think he'sgonna be fine. There's nothing doing him.
He's he's one hundred per he's stillgrinding, he's playing games in the

(16:30):
outfield, he's dhing. He's fine. It's just a matter of him.
It's just a matter of him gettinghot, and you'll see he'll run off,
you know, seven hits and tenat bats you know, four home
runs and fifteen at bats. It'scoming. So I just feel bad for
the picture on the other end that'sgonna receive it. Yeah, he's gonna

(16:52):
be on his way and and we'rewe're not We're not panicked at all.
Yeah, pity that guy. Well, I hope the stress levels are like
a nine to one win for youtonight. But hang in there. We
appreciate it. We'll see you.Uh, we'll see you next Wednesday.
Appreciate everything. Absolutely enjoy being onwith you guys every week. And uh,
hanging there, actual fans, we'recoming there, you go. Thanks
Dan, I appreciate it, anduh, let's do it. Appreciate it.

(17:15):
Hey, do we need to stayhere and just end it to the
rest of the show because that possible? Uh checked them on long too,
Triple E. And we borrow youfor a second. Put that collar on
hold real quick because we may haveto just kept Dane along and necessary today.
All right, tripley, How doesit work if we just finished the
show here and cut it off earlyhere, like in the next minute or

(17:37):
two, Will that allow you tocatch up to the top of the hour
with the interview Just so we're gonna. I think we we just roll.
Yeah, I think that's a goodidea, just so we'll take it for
a couple more minutes and then makeit up with Dana Brown. And he
had some good stuff to say today. So yeah, I just think confess
my fault for asking more questions. But guess what, sometimes you just got
to keep them a little longer.Yeah. So I think one of the
things that uh we about earlier, and I brought up the spin rates Dana

(18:02):
Brown made mentioned the spin rates andI teased it in the seven o'clock hour,
and we didn't get to it.We had so many callers, which
we enjoy every single day. Butlet me get to him real quick.
This is the spin rates from lastnight. So okay, so spin rate
up nineteen miles an hour on hisfastball. There you go. Yeah,
so I guess we we'll take it. Yeah, we'll take a break.
Yeah, well, we'll take abreak and get back next
