(00:04):
Welcome back to the Shawn Salis RayShow here on Sports Talk seven ninety Shawn
Salisbury, Brian Lima, Manuel Elmore. Now it's time to welcome in Astros
general manager Dana Brown to the show. Yeah, a few minutes early.
He got stuff to do. We'realways grateful that he makes time for us
on his weekly visit on a Wednesdayand the book. Sorry, data,
it's a modern technology sometimes gets inthe way. Good to have you on

(00:24):
Astros GM for his weekly visit.Dan, let me start here. What
do you learn about your team withwins like last night? Yeah, so
last night you learn that they havegrit. You know that it's a day
after losing a tough one the daybefore, and then you you come in
and then you're you're behind, andthen you just show grit to fight back,

(00:48):
you know, and a couple ofbig home runs and we're right back
in it. And so that's ahuge win. You know, it's a
huge run for your morale because youlose that game, you know, the
day before, and if you losethat one, it's like even you know,
more excruciating. So the way theguys fought back and pulled that off,
you know, that's that show ussome grit and some character, Dana.

(01:11):
There's a lot of reasons you guysare playing much better baseball, as
you've told us, with the marathonof a season that you'll roll off some
wins and we'll get to a coupleof nights ago. But last night,
huge win. Character builder if youhad one, and I'm only going to
give you one to point to,what's been the biggest reason you're playing better
baseball right now? Yeah, thebiggest reason we're playing better baseball is we're

(01:33):
getting really good starts. You know, when you get these quality starts,
you know, you get in aposition where you could run off some games.
And I think the fact that we'regetting quality starts that that's and you
know, of course, you knowI'm only pack only to pick warn but
the bullpen's been good too, Butthe fact that we're getting the quality starts
is very helpful. Did in Javier'scase any concern and maybe the reason we

(01:57):
heard mechanics he mentioned and Joe dida spota. Are you concerned about a
three or four mile an hour differencein the where where you know where his
fastball was last night? No?I mean Javier has these moments, you
know, where he didn't have thehop to his stuff, and so I
don't really have that much of aconcern, you know, you know,

(02:20):
we need to get him back ontrack because we're going to need him,
but I don't have that much ofconcern. We need to really, uh
stay focused on him turning the cornerbecause we're going to need him down the
stretch. Do do we know whatthe mechanics they had mentioned mechanics? Do
do we know what the mechanical youknow, the game before, what eight
strikeouts to start? Eight strikeouts inone walk look like Javier? Do we

(02:42):
know in a short period of timewhat that mechanic or mechanics might be,
Dana. I think it could berhythm and timing, you know, uh,
you know, he's got that highelevation of his front glove and he's
got the lean back, and sometimeshe'll get out of sync, and I
think it's the rhythm and timing ofhis delivery that gets him out of sink

(03:04):
a little bit. So I'm surethey're gonna work on it on his side
and hopefully would get him back, you know, to being the true Javier
that he is astros GM Dana Brownfor his weekly visit a few minutes early
this week. Thank goodness, he'sgot stuff to do and we're grateful to
have him. All right, Dana, let's roll over to the night before
fromber and admitted that he got offscript. Let me start with the first

(03:29):
question. Why. Yeah, becauseyou know, sometimes as a you know,
veteran, as a veteran guy, sometimes you know, you want to
go with a pitch that you're feelinggood about and it may not be the
case. You know, sometimes youget in the rhythm of the game and

(03:49):
you think, oh, I canget this guy out with a change up.
Oh, darn, I made amistake with that change up three run
Homer, you know, and oh, I think I can get this guy
down with my breaking ball. Well, no, the breaking ball was putting
a bit bad location, and sothat's what happened. And you'll see how
fast a game to turn around.Yes, so hopefully hopefully he can build

(04:13):
on this and learn from this, because you know, it could be damaging
and so ultimately, uh, youknow, we put a lot of work
into you know, calling the rightpitches and things like that, and so
we got to follow the script.Hey, well with that script and when
somebody breaks the script and he's aveteran in the league, and you know

(04:34):
those losses like that Dane I saidon the show, and wins the same
way like last night, when overthe course of a season there's a you
know, a handful of both, you look back and say that was one
that wasn't one of the sixty lossesor sixty five losses or one of the
one hundred wins or ninety five wins. Those can be detriment, detrimental to
a team. So not letting infesterand getting the win huge. But back

(04:56):
to Frombers what he did and said, does it need to be addressed with
him when he admits that he wentoff script and has it, Yeah,
it's already going to address you know, So we don't wait around. And
in course of one hundred and sixtytwo games. You know, even hitters
get off off script. You knowsometimes they you know, they try to

(05:17):
pull balls that they know that theyshould be going the other way. We
say, look, you got tolook away on this picture. Don't look
in look away, And hitters wouldget off script. It happens. It's
part of the game. And asI mentioned, we gotta we got to
learn from it. We got tomake the adjustment and we got to keep
it moving in the right direction. You can't dwell on it. You lip

(05:40):
it in the bud. You learnfrom it, you get back on course,
because each one of these games thatyou mentioned will count, and so
getting off script is something that wedon't want to do. We want to
stay locked in. These wins arevery important, particularly trying to get back
to five hundred. As I mentionedbefore, get back to five hundred,
Go on, Ane, another nicerun and before you know, good things

(06:02):
are happening and you're you're you're elevatingyourself in the standing. Yeah, Dana,
when you were watching that game, like a lot of us, did
you, did you notice with yournaked eye, like what's going on here?
Was there a part of you thatknew and could see visibly that things
were changing with his script? Yeah? I mean to the change up to
Shanuel. You know, I thinkif you droves, if you throw hard

(06:25):
stuff to Shanuel, I think youcan get it by them. You know,
uh, you throw soft stuff. As you saw even last night,
he gets off speed pitchers. He'san off speed hitter. And you get
off that script before you know ityou start running into trouble and and it's
almost like you know, flying theplane. You got to follow the instruments.
You can't go with your instinct. And sometimes guys want to go up

(06:45):
their instincts instead of following the instruments. So ultimately we got to stick the
script. I think the players understandwe address these things right away, and
so we don't you know, wedon't let it festor sometimes you wait for
the next day. Some times wereaddressed it that night. Sometimes we wait
till the next day because guys arefrustrated, they're angry, and you know,
you want to catch them, uhyou know when they're when they're calming

(07:08):
down a little bit. So ultimatelywe address it, and uh, you
know, we got to get backon script and run off somewhere wins and
the script teams playing well. Yep, the team's playing well right now.
We're nine out of we're seven outof our last nine at home. You
know, we have been struggling, you know, at home at time.
So there's some good things happening withthis club. And uh, you know,
we're nine out of our last twelve. Uh, good things are happening.

(07:30):
Dana with a Brave's return. Whenwhen? When will we see him
in a major league dugout? Yeah, I think we've got a chance of
seeing him in a major league dugoutpotentially sometime maybe this weekend or early next
week. We're just finalizing some thingsdown in West Palm Beach. Uh that

(07:50):
he's seemed to be getting his timing, he's seemed to be getting his loads
right, he's having you know, better at bats, and so you know,
at some point, you know, the goal is to probably get him
in two Triple A games. Ifwe can get him in those two Triple
A games, and then you know, take it from there. But there's
a good chance that we'll see himmaybe early next week or the latter part

(08:16):
of this weekend. Dana, depthis important and you know that, and
you've talked about a Bray, youand the guys like Dubond who've added depth
and get McCormick back. Okay,So with with this situation with the Bray
who you sent down there for areason, and we've talked about this ad
nauseum. So now with his eminentreturn, is there any you've been a
baseball guy for a lot of decades, is there any concern We know how

(08:39):
confidence in reps are Singleton's playing goodbaseball, hit a bomb last night.
Any concerns that the collateral part ofplatooning, if you're going to give a
bray you run at first base?Any with platooning that he loses, meaning
Singleton seeing more pitches that he's seeingand it's obviously helped him. Are you
concerned it all with collateral damage tothe team about production at that position or

(09:01):
any other position that platoons. Well, I would say you're only going to
play if you're productive, right,And so I think Joe's got that thought
proces in his mind. Uh,you know, we have to put the
team first, and so if you'renot producing, you know, it's going
to be tough to crack this lineup. If you're producing, you're going to

(09:22):
play, you know, that's thebottom line. I mean, you've got
to produce, you know, whetherit's defensively and offensively or you have to
be a big, you know, big part of the bat, you know,
whether it's the middle of the orderor whatever the case may be.
But we need production and if youif you do not produce, it's going
to be really difficult to crack thislineup. So, uh, you know,

(09:43):
you could, you can start withthe platoon process, thought process,
but ultimately, if you're not producing, you can't play. So and that's
just the way it's. That's theway it's going to be when he's in
the dugout on a major league team, on on the Astros, in your
dugout, who's your starting first baseman? Well, I mean that's a Joe

(10:05):
question right now, but I wouldsay, right now, you know,
Singleton the first baseman. And youknow, when we when when he comes
back, you know, we'll gethim in some games. We'll see how
it looks. And I mean,if they both start to jail, then
you know we can we can workwith the platoon. But you know,
ultimately, uh, you know,if you're hot, you're gonna play.

(10:28):
If you're cold, you're you're you'reprobably gonna sit. You know, That's
probably how Joe's gonna do it.I don't want to speak to Joe,
but I'm sure from our conversations youknow you're gonna have to produce in order
to play. Astros GM Dana Brownfor his weekly visit for a couple more
minutes a little early this week, and we're thankful for it here on Sports
Talk seven ninety. Hey, theBengo card for a lot of us didn't

(10:50):
have Jake Myers hidden in the ninethirty or so. O PS. He's
played great baseball. I think he'sthe biggest pleasant surprise on the team.
But you guys said coming out ofspring that he was going to get in.
So did Joe every opportunity to winthat job and keep it, and
you had confidence this has to beI mean, he's an everyday guy now,
man, this has to be anunbelievable pleasant surprise for you guys so

(11:13):
far or did you see this comingwith him? Yeah? I mean our
data people continue to talk about howproductive they thought, you know, Myers
could be. I'm excited about Myers. I fire you know, every time
I see him in a clubhouse,I fire him up with a comment.
You know, when he gets ahit in the game, I get fired
up in the box, you know, because he's Yeah, he's taking charge

(11:37):
of this opportunity to play every day. And we told him early on,
look, you're gonna get a chanceto show us what you can do.
And it's exciting to see when guysreally answer the bell and Honestly, he's
been good and you know, wewe we hope he continues, Uh,
you know, to produce because it'sbeen really fun to watch. We're excited

(11:58):
about them, and so if youcan keep this up, it's going to
be really big for our club. How do you manage the low perfeto Dubond,
McCormick, and Myers. So Myers, who's earned that job, gets
to get most of the run,but also get work for your guys in
Dana you've mentioned depth how important itis. How you how do you manage
that that like force them right there. Yeah, it's a good problem to

(12:22):
have, you know, when youhave good players and you have to you
know, juggle to get them inthe game. Uh. You know,
Uh, you handle it by saying, okay, you know, if you're
hot, you're gonna play. Youknow, if you cool off, you
know, we may sit you aday or two. Well, ultimately,
uh, you know, you mayhave to make a roster move. There's

(12:43):
different things you know to do interms of how you handle it. But
initially, I think you know,if you're if you're hot and you're producing,
Uh, this is a really goodproblem to have because guys will lock
in, you know, because theyknow. Look, I mean, I
got it. I got guys thatare playing well, and so I got

(13:03):
to be a big part of thisproduction. And you know, and if
if I'm not, you know,I may have to get optioned out or
whatever the case may be. Butyou know, ultimately, I think Joe's
gonna play the hot hand or thehot bat. You know, I should
say so, you know, thisis a good problem to have no doubt
about it. Dana. You toldus about Bregman. We talked about last
week. The when he gets going, that's the guy. And he got

(13:24):
going in the sixth hole, inthe five hole. And it may be
a Joe question, but I don'thave Joe, So I'll ask somebody who's
smarter about it than I am.You, why move Payne out of the
four hole and put Bregman back inthere? When Paina is hitting like he's
an All star and playing great defense, Why was it necessary to move that
lineup like that? Yeah, Imean answer Joe question. Maybe Joe thought,

(13:45):
like Bregman handles this particular picture.Well, sometimes we'll have the matchups,
you know, and Joe will playthe matchups. You know, if
Bregman's hitting like three fifty off apitcher. You know, he may put
him a little bit higher in thelineup. I ultimately, I think Pregnant
will get hot and stay hot. He's the second half player and uh,
you know, so he's contributing defensively. He got hot there for a second

(14:07):
we thought like, oh man, this is gonna be great. Pregnant is
starting to heat up. Uh,and I think he will. He will
heat up. He will definitely heatup. I know, as I mentioned
before, I've been watching this guysince college baseball and I know he's a
gamer and I can't wait until heheats up. I think it's coming,

(14:28):
and uh, you know when whenit comes, it's going to be pretty
special to watch. So you know, stay tuned for that. I think
he's going to turn the corner andyou know, good things are going to
start to happen. We got toneed him to heat up, and he
knows it. Yeah, we gotwe got a taste of that what we've
had here in Houston for a whilewith then we got a taste of it.
Over the last couple of weeks,he has started to heat up.
I'll leave you with this, andit's a good thing and it's going to

(14:50):
be an expensive one, as weknow, are you guys, And the
way he's playing his lights out thatthat guy in right field, I think
you know who I'm to talk aboutis pretty good. Are you talking extension
with him? Currently with Kyle Tucker? Currently? Not talking extension. We
love Kyle Tucker. He's the heckof a player, you know. And

(15:11):
at some point, as I mentioned, we got him, you know,
we have him under contract through twentyfive yep, you know, and and
at some point we will talk.We will be in touch with his agent.
I'm talking to his agent during springtraining and things like that, and
so, I mean he knows thatat some point and offers coming. But
right now we're not in discussion.Uh. But you know, we we

(15:33):
love him, we love to havehim. We love him to retire here
if you know, if possible, and so we'll do We'll do whatever we
got to do to try to keephim. That'll be an off season conversation,
Dana. That'll be an off seasonconversation, not during the season.
Yeah, I mean, I don'tknow that. You know, at some
point we'll talk about it. Itcould be sometime this year, you know,

(15:56):
it could be off season. Itcould be early next year right now,
I don't know that. The onlything I can tell you is that
the agent is well aware that we, you know, we want to sign
him here. He's well aware thatwe want to sign him here, and
so at some point, you know, we will have a conversation. I
love what he's doing right now. He's been very productive. He's on a

(16:18):
mission. He's driving the ball,he's pretty much carrying us. Yeah,
he's pretty good. At some pointwe'll get this, we'll get an offer
up to him. Yeah, butwe we'd love to keep him here.
Yeah, hitting it all over theballpark. It's a good win, good
good last ten games plus, andanother series is going to start. And
I know you got the Memorial Dayweek in ahead, so enjoy that,

(16:38):
enjoy your baseball club, and we'llsee you after today's game and then when
you get back home, and we'lllook forward to next week's talk. Dana,
thanks for adjusting your time, andwe appreciate you absolutely. I'm fired
up, Astro fans. Thank youfor coming there, going We're going to
try to keep rolling. Appreciate you, Dana. Thank you. That's Dana
Brown. A lot to discuss andsoak in. We get thirty minutes to

(16:59):

he I love the fact that eventhough he had to adjust, he come
on and give us a lot ofabout fifteen good minutes. So we'll talk
about the Abrave situation and Alex Bregmanin the four hole and Kyle Tucker's contract.
