(00:00):
We're the Sewn Salisbury Show continued. It's that time of the week's talking Astros
broadcaster Steve Sparks. Yeah, wemiss him last week a little holiday,
right, We had a memorial tohave Steve back in this week for his
weekly eight thirty visit. Steve,Welcome in, Astros broadcaster. Let me

(00:22):
start here, Steve. This pitchingstaff, when you consider everything that's gone
on, this starting pitching staff hasbecome the strength of the team right now.
When you talk about the consistency overthe last twelve to fifteen games,
they've been really friggin good. Theyhave. Yeah, everybody's starting to round
in with arra Getty and Hunter Brownpitching well now. And you know,

(00:43):
Robert and I were talking about onthe pregame show yesterday that we've just felt
like every night you got a goodchance to win. And that's the way
the Astros have felt in years past. So that's a good place to start.
If you want to turn things around, it's got to start with starting
pitchers, and those guys are doinga great job. Got Louis Garcia who
threw a live the other day onthe on the field too, and that

(01:03):
was really exciting to see the waythe ball was coming out of his hands.
So I don't want to put atimeline on it, but if you're
get him back sometime after the AllStar break, he'll be a great shot
in the arm too. Well,Steve, how did it look? I
mean when you were were you alittle bit amazed by it? I mean
it seems it just from what we'veheard, and now you were there,
you saw with your own eyes. What was it like? It was?

(01:25):
It was just jumping, you know. It looked better than it did even
his last healthy year. To behonest with you, Wow, I mean
he was jumping out that he wasin the low nineties effortlessly, and the
breaking stuff was just really sharp. It was only twenty pitches, so he
could go out there and just kindof gass it out. But it was
it exceeded my expectations by a ton. So it was great news. You

(01:47):
know. If he can just temperthings and just kind of coast through a
couple more lives and then go outon a rehab assignment, I think the
Astros are going to be really happywith the end product. I want to
talk about the two guys you met, and let's start with the arraghetti Steve.
I see every time I watch anotherstrikeout, six strikeouts, seven strikeouts,
eight strikeings. He seems to there'sI don't know if it's a mental

(02:08):
toughness. I love his grind,I do, and it seems to me
he's starting to adjust a major league, you know, to hitters, and
how you have to pitch, andhow you have to gear up on It
seems that for the most part, you can ask a guy to improve every
start. I feel like he has, Steve. Yeah, that's that's what

(02:29):
you're hoping for. You get ayoung guy in there, especially with a
pitcher that has this type of swingand myths, then you really start to
impress on him that, hey,all you got to do is get ahead
and then you can expand the strikezone. It doesn't work the other way
around nearly as well. So Ithink he's confident enough to challenge guys early

(02:49):
in accounts. Now, sometimes youcan probably tiptoe into a league as a
young guy and not really understand ifyour stuff plays at this level, and
if you get a little bit timidor whatever it might be, and start
to dance a little bit early inthe counts and start to fall behind where
you have to start working inward. Then it doesn't go well. And I
think he's learned that, and Ithink he's just going at guys with his

(03:13):
best stuff. He just he justrips it early in the counts and he
gets himself in really good, favorablesituations where he can go out there and
dominate. And you know, hestrikes out a lot of guys. And
when you strike out guys, there'sno risk of error or lucky hits or
anything like that. Right, Yeah, no question about Steve Sparks. For
his weekly eight thirty visit on Monday, joins US astros broadcast here on Sports

(03:36):
Talk seven ninety Steve, what's thebeen do you've noticed with your expert naked
eye about Hunter Brown? What's beenthe turnaround? That is? He's come
out with four or five pretty damngood starts in a row, and he
looks different. What is it forme? It's the two team fastball.
You know. I think I toldyou, you know a few weeks ago
that everything goes away from the riotings. Everything's away. Yeah, you did

(03:59):
about about three weeks ago. That'sexactly what you said. Yep. Even
it's fastball naturally cuts, you know, So everything going away. Every right
hander in the world was diving acrosshome plate, keeping the front shoulder closed
and just wailing on any mistake. So he adds the two seam fastball out
of the blue in Detroit, comingout of the bullpen, starts to run
some pitches in on rioties, startsto have success, starts to break bats

(04:24):
where guys can't dive anymore. Youknow, they're not taking advantage of mistakes,
so he can get away with thingsfrom time to time. And even
with that, Sean, I mean, you feel like, Okay, it
looks good, but you see theconfidence start to boil and then the velocity
ticks up a little bit because hejust he feels like he is in charge.

(04:45):
And that's what you love about whathe's doing right now. We've seen
it and flashes in years past, especially coming out of the bullpen, but
to do it as a starter rightnow, especially when the Ashhos need it
most. If they're going to turnthings around, it's going to be starting
pitchers and Arragetty and Hunter Brown gotto continue this run. No doubt,
Steve, is he limited his usageof the cutter, not throwing it as
much, or is it changed towho he's throwing it too. You know

(05:10):
what, it shows up as acutter. It's usually just his fastball that
cuts. Okay, just doesn't getbehind the baseball right like a lot of
guys. Some guys just supinate naturally, and that's where his fastball is.
So he'll cut it every once awhile and it looks more like a slider.
But a lot of times it sayscutter when it's just his fastball.
It runs away from the rioties.Steve, I'm we're concerned on this show
about Christian Hobb. I know you'renot a doctor, but you're you're around

(05:33):
it. Cavier and Erkidi and lastweek Dana Brown had said in about forty
eight hours when he was on ourWednesday show that they should know we don't
know. Well, do you haveany status on what you think or should
we be prepared for the worst forboth of these guys in this situation.
Yeah, I think you always preparefor the worst. But for me,

(05:54):
I think they're just looking at secondopinions. You know, if it's a
little iffy, then you want togo see if there's there's different routes you
might want to take with whatever's goingon. I have no idea what's going
on, but you know, thesesituations haven't looked good for a lot of
pictures around the league, so youprepare for the worst, you know,
and hopefully you're pleasantly surprised where,Okay, it looks like something that we

(06:17):
can probably massage out of there andgetting going here again pretty soon. So
same with urkidie. You know,we just don't know yet, so we'll
just deal with it when we getthere. And that's why teams have to
do it, you know. Andevery team is dealing with pitching woes right
now, you know. For youknow, there's probably ten different reasons why

(06:39):
so many pitchers are going down, but you just have to deal with it.
At this level. You just gotto have somebody to come in and
take their place. Yeah, theArragetties and Hunter Browns, as you mentioned,
got to continue to pitch like thisif you're gonna close ground. And
I'm just one of those guys andthink, well, if you have to
get a second opinion, you probablyare erring on the side of caution because
it rarely does a guy with goodnews go to the second opinion. But

(07:00):
hopefully we'll be wrong in this case. And you get these guys back,
but hey, still got to playthem. There's a bunch more to go.
We're sixty games in, Steve, and the barometer of a team,
well, I know team's going winstreaks, and you can win twenty two
of the last twenty five to getin, but seven and a half out.
It's a talented team. There's somesigns of some good things happening,
but the inconsistency in one run gamessixty games in? Is it fair to

(07:24):
judge the team on a barometer thatsays this is the majority of what they
are, that it's going to bethat type of grind this year. I
don't think so. Why, tobe honest, look at a couple of
Yeah, why Steve, just lookat a couple of recent World Series winners
and look at the talent that theyhave on offense. So if the pitching
does continue to do well, andthey're pitching has been great right since May,

(07:46):
they've got the best bullpen era inthe American League. Their starting pitchers
are doing really well. You've gothope on the horizon with Luis Garcia,
Lance mccallers junior. Maybe you'll getsome good news with a couple of the
other guys. But man, Ijust can't believe this is what the offense
is. I just really don't believeit. The one run games is troubling.

(08:11):
They're five and thirteen, Mariners aretwelve and four. Those are reversed.
The Astros are in first place. They just got to start executing.
They've got to move runners over, they've got to get them in from third
base with less than two outs. They just have to do a better job.
But there's been a couple of WorldSeries winners recent twenty nineteen Nationals for
twenty seven and thirty three at point, and the twenty twenty one Braves who

(08:35):
won the World Series didn't stay atfive hundred until one hundred and ten games
the end of the season. SoI think the Astros have a lot of
talent, and I think offensively, when things start to gel and they get
a little bit of momentum, Ithink they can. They can run off
fifteen out of twenty and think ofthat nature and get right back in it.

(08:56):
I don't think anybody's running away withit in this division. Everybody has
warts, but I think the Astroshave the fewest warts, and I think
I think it'll start to show prettysoon. I think this month of June
might be very telling you look atthe schedule. I think the Astros should
have a really good record this month, but they got to get it going.
I agree with you, like doyou panic? You know fans can

(09:16):
panic, but you know, Idon't think anybody's panicking. Agreed. Agreed,
Yeah, because those club the athletesjust think different than fans and we
and the media and fans do.And Steve we had said it on this
show earlier too, that that's gotto be the hope that this team's player,
just the town alone. Other teamsthat are their way out don't have
the skill set offensively to overcome tentwelve games out or seven and a half

(09:39):
games. The Astros still haven't raninto their full hot streak against good teams.
So I think we're with you andhold out hope on that and no
panic at all. All right, let me get to Ryan Presley. I
asked Dana Brown last week. Iasked Dana Brown last week if the demotion
if he would look at it asa demotion, meaning Ryan Presley to go
from the closer to the eight,And he said that may have something to

(10:00):
do with it. He didn't thinkit was a lack of confidence. Is
this a physical thing or a mentalthing? With Ryan Presley and the adle,
He's got four blown saves already, which is not like him. You
know how good he is. Yeah, you know what, he had a
really good stretch for about a monthwhere he had about a one and a
half the ra right last week orso, you know, it didn't go
real well with a couple of games, but he had a little injury on

(10:24):
his ring finger. I don't knowif that's affecting anything at all. If
I look at this stuff and Ilook at the batting average of balls and
play, he's been pretty unlucky. And when you're unlucky in the eighth inning,
then it's loud, right, youknow, and you know it's game
changing. So it's difficult right nowfor him. And when the results aren't

(10:46):
there, where are you at mentally? I think everybody could say, if
you're not doing well at your job, or none of us are, and
it's magnified so much at the majorleague level, then you are going to
take a hit with your confidence. So has he lost a little bit of
confidence? I would I would say, I would, Oh yeah, who
wouldn't. I'm with you, Steve. The being a pro and getting paid

(11:07):
doesn't mean you can't lose a littleconfidence when things aren't going well. It
just it hurts so much. Iyou know, you know, you're letting
down your team and the city andyour the organization and everything. So it
does hurt so uh, But Ihave confidence in his talent, you know,
and I have confidence in his mentalability to get through this. And

(11:28):
everybody goes through this from time totime. Hater did the first couple of
weeks of the season, and everybody'sgoing to go through little patches. But
you know, when the team's tryingto get back to five hundred and the
eighth inning, like I said,it gets magnified in it, and it
hurts, always tough to over come. And it's always tough to overcome a
lead off walk too, right,Steven, which is which will put you
We'll put you in trouble and likethat. But that goes to the pressing

(11:52):
part of it. Well, it'sstruggling, not locating. Somebody gets a
cheap hit on you, and itjust the carryover, and you're right,
it's it's uh, people don't I'llcome by and you know, they're not
judging our job every day. We'renot out in front of what maybe they
are, but we don't get tohear it as loudly as amazing baseball player
does. They get paid a lotof money to get judge. Yes,
they do. That's right, that'sright. It comes with the territory.
It comes with the territory. Sowhen you're a leverage reliever and he's I

(12:18):
mean, don't forget that his lastnineteen appearances in the playoffs have been scoreless,
right, don't forget about those dayseither, you know, it just
just happens. Sometimes you have somelittle patches every once in a while.
But his stuff is still really electric. And guys who've been that good at
the back end and in clutch momentssteve their strength becomes that mental toughness,
and I'm sure it's challenged a littlebit, but that's what you can lean

(12:39):
on with Brian Presley, aside fromthe fact that he's got good stuff as
well, my man, great, great stuff. Look forward to hearing the
broadcast. Let's go get three ofthem right off the bat here and take
care of their home business. Andwe look forward to visiting with you next
week and We always appreciate you,my man. All right, Thanks Sean,
Thanks everybody. Oh you too. That's Steve Sparks, Cardinals in town
and Justin Verlander on the Mountain nightSports Talk seven ninety. We'll talk what

(13:03):
Steve Sparks said and he thinks there'sa fifteen out of twenty in him.
I hope he's right. Sports Talkseven ninety
