And we're there for the Sean SalisburyShow continued. Welcome back to the Sean
Salisbury Show here on Sports Talk sevenninety Sean Salisbury, Brian Limamanuel Elmore every
single Wednesday at nine thirty. Let'swelcome in Astros General Manager Dana Brown.
We do we always look forward tothis favorite time on Wednesday talking to Dana
(00:22):
Brown, the Astro GM. Gratefulfor his weekly visit here on Sports Talk
seven ninety. Dana. We justgot news, Welcome in, first off,
and congratulations on these last two wins. And just got news from the
Astros site that Jose Orkeaty is goingto have Tommy John surgery. So in
the last couple of days or Keatyand Javier both, let me just get
(00:42):
your emotional thoughts on this for bothof these guys who will be out for
an extended time with Tommy John.Yeah, tough time of course for the
club. Those guys have been prettygood pitchers for this organization and both have
pitched in the postseason, so it'svery difficult that they're going to available surgery.
(01:02):
We don't know to the we don'tknow the extent of it until the
doctor gets in certainly Tommy John isthe possibility, but we won't know that
until they have the surgeris Uh.You know, I think it's been a
tough ride for those guys. Youknow, they've been battling through some things
and so let's finally get them fixedand you know, we'll get Hobby Air
(01:25):
back, you know, probably sometimenext year. It's gonna be a tough
time, but you know, overall, the rotation is still pretty much intact,
and we've been pretty good, youknow, with the three to zero
five earned run average over the lasttwenty three games. So uh, you
know, uh, while we're goingto miss those guys, we're certainly still
(01:46):
moving in the right direction. Dan. And you're not a doctor, and
neither am I. But you consultwith them, Hector. As a general
manager, you want to know allthe results and why something happens. But
around baseball and maybe people you've talkedto with your insight, and maybe it's
just because the Astros, it feelslike it's happening more often nowadays. Well
do any reason, do anybody giveyou a reason why we feel like it
(02:07):
is it? Is it spin rate? Is it velocity? Why this is
happening? So often. Yeah,I think kids are throwing harder at a
younger age. I mean I thinkback. You know, I've been in
the game for thirty four years.I think back. You know, in
my tenth year, you know,if you throw, if you touch ninety
three, it was a big deal. It's like, Wow, that guy's
(02:29):
up to ninety three. I mean, now ninety three is an average fastball.
You know, guys are touching onehundred, one hundred and one hundred
and two. So I think guysare throwing harder at a younger age.
And I think that's probably even toall of these surgeries. I'm certain,
I'm certain that that's probably a partof it. I'm sure there's other reasons
(02:49):
why guys are having surgeries as well. I'm not a doctor, but you
know, just looking at the trendof years in the game, I just
know guys are certainly throwing harder, and there's more surgeries. As GM Dana
Brown for his weekly visit here onSports Talk seven ninety Always grateful to have
him on. Dana. I don'tknow, with your thirty four years in
baseball, have you ever seen wherea team could overcome And I know you're
(03:13):
hoping to get mccullors and Garcia backmidway through or sometime around that time All
Star Breaker beyond, we're four frontlinestarters, guys that have been impactful that
the team's had to overcome four ofthem and still be as competitive as you
guys want to be. Have youseen that in your thirty four years of
baseball? Yeah? I think youknow, when you have the depth that
(03:36):
we have in our pitching, youknow, if you look at our rotation
now, ropations, really it's reallygood. So you know, we have
you know, the veteran and Verlanderof course, and the veteran in Valdez,
and then you know Blanco getting himinto the rotation, the idea to
(03:57):
put him into the rotation. That'sbeen big. It's been one of our
best pitchers. And then we havetwo young guys who are turning the corner
Arrogetty and Brown. These guys havebeen pitching very well. You know,
rag Getty took a line drive offthe calf yesterday, but he's gonna be
He's gonna be all right. Butlook, our rotation is still intact.
We still have a you know,a playoff type rotation. You know,
(04:19):
we have frontline guys I mean,if we get into any we get into
the we get into the playoffs,we can we can battle anybody with our
front two. And then you know, our are our three. After that,
you know we have we have JVand we have Foal dead and as
our front two. And then youknow what Blanco was throwing the ball well,
and and then of course the twoyoung guys are turning the corner.
(04:41):
So I really think that, uh, you know, losing these guys,
it's very unfortunate, but I thinkultimately we're still in position to go on
a run. We're still in positionto hit the postseason. Uh, it's
not time to hit the panic buttonyet. And so, uh, I
still fully feel really good about it. As I mentioned, over the last
twenty three you know games, we'vegot a three zero five and run average
(05:04):
for our starter, So I thinkour pitch is gonna be okay. Yeah,
and then they've done a phenomenal joblast what fifteen or so starts,
So Dane, let me continue withthis pitching stuff. Let's for instance,
and with that you talked about howgood they've been, and they have been,
but now considering now, there's gotto be some ifs by it though
now there's more pressure with these fourguys still hurt. Isn't there not more
(05:27):
pressure to say, damn, wedon't have a big luxury to lose another
one for fifteen days, even ifit's missing two starts. I mean,
now, the durability and when youthink about Hunter Brown, Renel Blanco and
Arraghetti, the length in which they'regoing to have to go with this so
you don't tax a bullpen and they'venever gone that many innings. Is there
a concern about durability with the fiveguys you got and what are you gonna
(05:50):
do if one of them goes downand God forbid none of them do.
Yeah, Ultimately we've tapped into ourthe depth of our pitching for sure,
you know, with the other guysgoing down. But we still feel like
we've got a couple guys in tripleA if something else happens. You know,
and as you guys have heard metalk on the show a lot,
(06:12):
I'm always in the market to getpitching, pitching, pitching, pitching.
Anytime you can get pitching, Ithink it's going to help your ball clubs.
So you know, we're always inthe market for pitching. There's never
a time that we're not in themarket. I've said that multiple times.
So I think, based on myexperience and based on what I'm seeing,
these five that we have are legitimatestarters. These guys can certainly get us
(06:35):
to the postseason, and if weget in, certainly we could have a
run. So I'm not discouraged,a little disappointed that our guys are going
down. But look, I've saidit before, ninety seven postseason games in
the last seven years. For youknow, going to this CS for seven
(06:58):
years straight, that's like a littlemore than a half a season more,
which shortens your off season as welland your rest time for your arms,
and so at some point you knowyour guys are going to go down.
It's just you know, the runof this organization of success, you know,
and we're like battling. So we'reright there and we're not giving in,
(07:19):
and we still have a good rotationand good things are happening in this
organization. I'm very optimistic, that'sno doubt. Dana Brown Astro's GM for
his weekly visit here on Sports Talkseven nine. Are Dana with that?
You mentioned the optimism and the extrainnings and all the things you've got to
look forward to. But you mentionedalso and earlier in the week it talked
(07:40):
about you can't see really a scenarioand i'll paraphrase a little bit of being
a seller. So let's tie intowhat you just said about pitching and the
trade deadline and now not having towait being aggressive. How aggressive will you
be in the buyer market, whetherit's for an everyday player and or a
pitcher, And how aggressive are youyou now going after that or are you
(08:03):
kind of picking and choosing or areyou on those phone lines today working those
phones to find out if you needto be aggressive already? Yeah, I
want people to understand, honestly,we are always in the market for pitching.
We're always acquiring, we're always waiverclaiming, We're always doing these things
when it comes to pitching, becausewe realize, in the course of one
hundred and sixty two games, youare gonna need pitching. You're gonna need
(08:28):
depth to get through a season, and so we're always in the market for
pitching, and so you know, anything that makes sense to us, we
will do. We get an opportunityto acquire another arm, we will acquire
the arm. But right now,I really feel good about our rotation,
you know. And as I feelgood about this rotation, and as we
continue to play this season, youknow, we will have phone calls and
(08:52):
we probably will talk to other teams, and if there's something out there that
makes sense for the Astros, we'lldo it. So but make no mistake,
our pictureing has been really good lately. So you know, I'm not
you know, I'm not worried.I'm excited about you know what's coming up.
Our guys are playing a lot ofgood baseball here, and so we
(09:15):
got guys heating up like dis withthe bat, you know, and so
I think things are going to startto We're going to get on all cylinders.
I've said it the whole time.I felt like we haven't hit our
stride. We hit it for likea week. But we're going to get
on all cylinders. We're going torun off some games. We need to
get back to five hundred. That'sour goal right now. Get back to
five hundred. Once you get backto five hundred, you go on a
six game run, a semi gamerun, you know, before you know
(09:39):
it, your ten games over fivehundred and so and you're back in first
place. So that's the goal.I think we're still good enough and I'm
not worried at all. And let'sjust say not not a significant and just
somebody was fatigued or tired and hadto miss two or three stars like from
Er did a little earlier. Okay, who would be the next guy up?
Who would be the next guy thatgave you three stars? Who would
it be? I mean we haveguys like blue Ball, who's aj blue
(10:03):
Ball, who's throwing well down there? Uh, you know we can go
get Colton Gordon. Uh, youknow, we we have guys you know
that are throwing well in the minorleagues. Hech Jake Walls and Double A
is throwing very well. I mean, you know, maybe we'll move him
up to triple A at some point. And you know, you just never
know which one of these young guysare gonna pop. But we still have
(10:24):
depth that we haven't tapped into. And so ultimately, uh, you know,
we're gonna, We're gonna, We'regonna be all right. I really
feel good. I feel comfortable youknow where we are. I do realize
we have tapped into some of ourstarter depth, you know, which,
uh you know we're gonna have tobuild that up and hopefully some of these
young guys could step up. ButI will tell you this, in this
(10:46):
organization, young players have been steppingup year after year, and it has
to give the you know, thesome comfort to our fans that we've had
young players step up year after year. We've had players walk out of here,
and we've had young players step inand stand up. And that's a
testament to our player development, forour scouting, you know, testament to
(11:07):
our analytics and data information that wecan find players. And so we will
not stop that. We will keepthe pedal to the metal. We'll keep
going hard, and you know, ultimately our plan is to win. Our
windows always open. As Jim Crainhas said, you know, we want
to win, and we want tocontinue to be postseason balance. And the
goal seems to always be for thisfranchise like the Good Ones is World Series
(11:30):
because that's who you guys aren't talentedenough to do it. And the way
the staff has been pitching has obviouslybeen really really damn lights out as of
late. So let me ask youmay not be fair, but I don't
care. You don't have to answerif you don't want, but I'm going
to put you to I'm gonna pressyou on this right now with these five
starters. Forget what you got comingdown with Garcia mccolors today and knowing what
we know about our Keatie and Javierare your starting five A world series winning
(11:56):
starting five right now? Our startingfive definitely world series. As I mentioned
before, if you take uh,JV So Ferlander and Javier, those are
two pillars at the top of yourrotation. Prom and er and and j
(12:16):
Yeah, j jv and and andValdez there, those two guys are are
pillars. So I have no problem, uh with those two guys as pillars.
Blanco has been having a career year. You know, we gave this
guy the change up, he tookoff and and so he's he's been one
(12:37):
of our best starters. So youput those three guys, I'll match that
up in the five, you know, five game series and then you know
if you have to go, youhave to go to a seven game series
that you get deeper for the postseason. You know you're gonna get a good
start out. A Hunter Brown,we've seen Hunter Brown do it. Let
me think about this, You're afourth starter, like a Hunter Brown,
(12:58):
he's gonna come in and be ninetyfour to ninety eight with a hard cutter
and a good breaking ball. There'snot many teams that can do that.
So I feel really good about ourchances of getting to the postseason. First
of all, winning the division. We got to win the division. Then
you get into the postseason, youset your rotation up, and we got
a chance of going on a run. We got a really good offense too.
(13:22):
So there's still a lot of goodthings going on are in Houston,
and and the fans have seen it, Like I said, time and time
again, a guy goes down, another guy steps up, a guy walks
out the door, another young playercomes in and play and performs. And
it's been constant. You know,it's been constant. So you know,
this isn't for the you know,a week of heart, this is this
(13:46):
is for the Warriors. Baseball isa grind. It's one hundred and sixty
two and we're preparing daily for injuriesand you know, players leaving. We're
not talking about today only when weget in our front office we're here,
we're talking about, Hey, whodo we have coming? What do we
got to do here? Who're redrafting? What is this guy's timeline. So
(14:09):
there's a lot of conversations going on. We don't talk just for today.
We build for the future. AndH. You know, when you build
that foundation the right way, youknow, it's it's pretty solid. So
we're we're we're on the move forthis last fifteen seconds. I got you.
How close are what do you havevingKyle Tucker back in the lineup?
Yeah, I mean it's you know, when you get hit on that shin
(14:31):
bone, any kind of bone bruise. H, it's going to be day
to day. You know, oncehe starts to move, h and starts
to feel good walking. Right now, he's still it's still it's still very
sore. And I've seen these bonebruises turn around in a matter of forty
eight hours. Right now is stillsore. Uh. And so I think,
(14:54):
you know, at some point, you know, we could potentially get
it back this weekend. Uh.But it is a deep bone bruise.
I don't know, if you know, most of us have been watching the
games and they saw it, andI mean he went down and he stayed
down for a while, sure did. I'm just very I'm very thankful that,
you know, when he took xrayse you know, the x rays
(15:15):
were negative, so in terms ofany fractures, so that's a that's a
that's a good thing. So youknow what, we're counting our blessings right
now. We hope to have themback, you know, this weekend.
But you know those when you falla ball off like that and it hits
you square on the bone, itis very, very painful. So hopefully
(15:35):
this weekend. Yeah, well,we look forward to my man, and
we look forward today's game and goget the sweep, and we'll look forward
to talking to you next week.Thank you. Absolutely hanging there, Astroal
fans. We're still moving, We'restill moving in the right direction. There
you go. Thanks Dana and thatDana Bron will come back and discuss.
We finish up the show Sports Talkseven ninety
