We're out there for the Sean SalisburyShow. Continued Sean Salisbury, Brian Alima,
Manuel Elmore. It's that time ofthe week. We moved him from
Wednesday to Friday. Astro's general managerDana Brown joining the show. Yep,
it is our Friday visit this week, nine thirty. Usually at Wednesdays at
nine thirty, god get a littlescouting in and check out some other people
(00:23):
in the organization. Dana Brown,Astros GM joins us. Dana, welcome
in. Let me start here. What is the most impressive thing in your
mind? Just one of them. What's the most impressive thing about your baseball
club this year in twenty twenty fourso far. Yeah, I mean the
most impressive thing is that we havethe grit that it's going to be necessary
(00:43):
to get through this tough time. You know, these guys battle and they've
been through this before, and soI would say the most impressive thing is
grit. You know, we havetalent. Well, if you have talent
but no grit, it's not thatgood. So we know that we got
to you know, hal the climb, and our guys are prepared to climate
(01:04):
and so you know, we're lookingto get hot eight games out of first
place, sixteen games swing to overtakethe Assos. I know you had mentioned
your goal first is to win thedivision. I know that's a tall task,
but there's still a lot of baseballto be played. So how tall
is the task to overcome eight gamesout at this stage of the season.
(01:26):
Yeah, I mean it's it's agrind. It's going to be it's not
going to be easy, but it'stotally doable. You know, I mentioned
before on the show, I've seenteams blow leads, seven game leads in
September, five game leads in September. You know, you know we got
we got to get on all cylinders. The main goal is get back to
five hundred first. That's our goal. You get back to five hundred,
(01:49):
you're right back in it. Andthat's when I tell you, Once you
get to five hundred, you getthe five game run or the seven game
run. That's when things start tolook pretty good. So you know,
our key is to get on allcylinders. You know, we've had times
this year where the pitching is reallygood, the hitting is really good,
you know, the bullpen's really good. We just haven't had a consistent time
(02:10):
where the bats, the starting pitching, and the bullpen. We're all on
all cylinders for a period or twoor three weeks. I think we'll get
that. And I think once weget that, that's when we're going to
get really hot. Damn. Soyou know, with go ahead, sorry,
(02:30):
you know, go ahead. Yeah. I was just gonna say,
with twenty seven games left to theAll Star break, you know, it's
imperative that we get hot. Okay. So if you're eight or ten games
out come All Star break? Howuh what's your thought process then? Is
that? Is that too much?Too big a hill to climb? And
where's your mode? Come trade deadline? If you're ten games out or you're
(02:53):
this far under five hundred, comecome All Star break? Yeah, I
mean that would be very disappointing becausethe team is very good. You know,
I don't foresee that happening, youknow, so that's a hypothetical.
I just don't foresee it happening.I just think the rotation is too good
right now. And I mean ourpitcher has been thrown very well. We've
been getting pretty good starts. Youknow. We got to know rough start
(03:14):
the other day with Ramburg, buthe's been good and so we've been getting
really good starts, and as Imentioned, once we get all on all
cylinders, I think that's when thingsare going to change. We just you
know, we will have good startsand then you know, we'll blow the
lead. You know, we'll havegood starts, but we won't get the
timely hits. And so we gotto get on all cylinders in order for
(03:35):
this thing to start to click, which I believe will happen sooner rather than
later. Uh, definitely before thenext twenty seven games, which is that
that's the point of all start breakAstro's GM Dana Brown for his weekly visit
this week on Friday every Wednesday normallyat nine thirty. Dandy, you mentioned
getting on all cylinders, and yetyou know this almost eighty games into the
season, right, you know inthe that you are inconsistently consistent. Is
(03:59):
that makes sense? Or consistently inconsistent? So what tells you with the inconsistency
of the team other than talent thatthis team can get on all cylinders?
What points to that for the fan? Yeah? I mentioned it. Grit.
You know, we have grit, and then we have guys that are
experiencing they've done it. Before. You know, these guys have you know
(04:21):
this, This Astros organization has beenoutstanding. You know, we've gone,
like I said before, seven straightces's and so ultimately, these guys know
how to get the job done. It's just a matter of getting getting hot.
You know, it's good to beback home. We've been playing a
lot better at home, you know. You know our last three home stands,
(04:41):
you know, we've been playing alot better twelve and eight or whatever
it is. So I think thisit's really time. It's time to get
hot, you know. And Ijust I think this is the time of
year where the teams get hot. That that June run, the June and
early July is is where you learna lot of about the character of a
team. And I think, youknow, over these next five weeks,
(05:03):
we're going to really learn a lot, Danny. You have to to get
the ninety wins, this team wouldhave to play like six thirty five baseball
or so is your team capable ofdoing that? Absolutely loot over you know
six, you know, six, that's very doable for our club, very
duable. That's a sixty something ortwenty something right that. I mean,
(05:26):
that's thirty games over five hundred orso. Right, Yeah, But I
mean we're capable of doing it,you know, and so ultimately I think
we will do it. I thinkwe have the pitching to do it.
Look, if we didn't have goodstarters, and if our pen you know,
was leaking oil, you know, then I would worry about it.
You know. I just think, you know, I don't think our pens
(05:49):
leak and oil. I just thinkwe got guys that have the ability.
They're healthy, they just haven't beengetting it done. They're used to getting
it done. And as I mentionedbefore, when you have a group of
veteran guys don't get it done,it's just a matter of time. If
I say the easiest decision in baseballis that Jose Abray you should not be
playing. What do you say tothat, Well, I say, look,
(06:11):
we're having conversations. We know thatthe guy is struggling. You know,
there's a human element to this thatI think some people don't realize.
You know, the guy's been toyou warriors entire life. We've given him
some opportunity to make some adjustments, and you know, quite frankly, we're
having conversations as to, you know, what we could do to get this
thing moving, and so you know, he's part of the conversation. But
(06:36):
you know, at some point, you know, we you know, as
Joe mentioned, you know, thereis a timeline, so you know we're
going to have to make some decisionsand and and as we continue to talk
through this, you know, youknow, we'll do what's best for the
team for sure. Dana Brown astrosGM for his weekly visit. Dana,
Joe and you both mentioned about turningthe corner with a brave and listen,
(06:58):
it's not just him. There's alot of elements. But when the struggles
real, people want to talk aboutone position. We get that, but
it has been a disappointing production fromfirst base. So with the Bray you,
when you guys both mentioned about turningthe corner, explain to me and
our listeners, what does that cornerlook like? What is turning the corner
for not only Jose to bray you, but your guy's decision to either keep
(07:21):
playing him or not playing him. What's the corner look like? Yeah,
well, the corner looks like.Look, we've given Jose, you know,
some time to you know, putthings together. You know, he
accepted assignment to go back to tripleA. And so turning a corner means,
look, let's continue to look atthis, let's evaluate it, and
(07:41):
at some point here soon, youknow, we realize we're up against time,
and we realize we're up against thebreak. We realize that, you
know, we we have to getthis thing moving. So you know,
turning the corner would be Okay,we've exhausted all options, and now we
have to make a decision. Andand then that's basically it is it?
(08:03):
Are you is it a Is ita disservice to the other guys on the
team playing playing him at first base? Well, I mean I think,
you know, a disservice would be, you know, a guy who we
we know is not going to beyou know, any good, right,
so we we're giving him an opportunity. We've given him the opportunity. We're
(08:28):
consistently having conversations. Uh, youknow, this guy has battled his tail
off, he's gone down, likeI said, he went down to you
know, the minor leagues to tryto get it fixed. And you know,
sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn'twork. And you know, we
realize that, uh, you know, we're up against time. So we're
we're having conversations about making you know, tough decisions, and we'll we'll well
(08:50):
hopefully, uh, you know, figure figure this thing out here soon and
so we can get this ball rolling. All right. Your roster construction,
I know you believe so so bigin it, and I think a lot
of people in this city do aswell. Would you do it any different
if you had to do it overagain, or do you believe wholeheartedly in
the construction of the roster as itis now? Yeah, it's a good
(09:13):
roster. I mean, like Isaid, make no mistake about it.
The roster's good. It's just thatwe have, you know, some players
that are underperforming, you know, and we got to get these players hot.
We got to get these players toturn the corner. And so,
you know, if you would havetold me, you know, that Bregman
would have gotten off to the startthat he got off to, I would
have said, you know, there'sno way. I know, he's usually
(09:35):
you know, a slow starter, but not that slow, you know.
And so now he's heating up withthe fourteen game hitting street. I think
we're right at the brink of turningthis thing around, and good things are
going to happen for this organization. You can't keep a good team down.
It's just you know, it's impossible. And I just wholeheartedly believe that.
I have been in the game forthirty four years, and I've never seen
(09:58):
a good team like this fall apart. The good the cream always rises to
the top. These guys will deliver. Uh, They'll be good. I
don't I've never seen a good teamjust give it up and fall apart.
These guys will turn the corner.I really believe in it, you know,
And it's gonna happen here soon.Danny you uh we we've talked about
(10:18):
your own. Everybody's always looking forpitching. You're taking calls, making calls
whenever you can upgrade the pitching partof it. Injuries have been a big
part of it, unfortunately, withthe the Rkidi and Javier situation and waiting
on Garcia and mccullors to get back. So as it is now, with
that will when you're shopping for apitcher, will it in order to get
(10:39):
a frontline pitcher, will it haveto sting a bunch on this roster or
in your minor leagues with your farmsystem to be able to go get a
frontline roster, frontline pitcher. Yeah. I mean, I don't know if
a frontline pitcher is going to beavailable. You know, a lot of
the front line pitchers, you know, teams are gonna on to one because
(11:01):
they're in the postseason or and makinga run for the postation. Or two
you may have a front line guythat's young and you want to keep them
long term. So I don't thinkthe front line guys are you know,
growing on trees. But I wouldsay this getting Garcia back, you know,
that's going to be a big help. And I think right now,
as you know, the way ourrotation is, it's a good rotation.
(11:26):
This rotation could definitely get you backto the postseason without a question. And
then if you add Garcia in there, you know, in six weeks or
so, the rotation is even better. So I think we're good enough.
I think we still have some depthin the minor leagues, although we are
into our depth right now. Butwe're good enough. It's just a matter
(11:48):
of, like I said, gettingon all cylinders. I mean, we've
had times where you know, thepitching's been outstanding, the rotation. We've
had times where the pen's been outstanding. We just have it hit those cylinder
is where we're cruising with good starts, we're getting good pitching at the back
end, and we're getting the timelyhits that usually happens with good teams,
(12:11):
which I feel this is a goodteam that will happen and we will get
on the roll. I don't foreseethis thing falling apart on us. I
really don't. I mean if Ithought that, look, we had a
hole here and a hole there anda hole over here, you know,
I mean you could talk about firstbase, you know, uh, you
know, we may have to makean adjustment there. But ultimately, you
(12:33):
know, we have some guys thatcould really get this thing down and we'll
turn it around. Will you wouldis it just pitchers you're looking at or
would you Are you looking at anotherposition on your team come trade time?
Yeah, I mean we get I'malways in the market for pitching, as
I mentioned before, so that's nosecret. And then if you know,
(12:54):
if there, if there's a batthat we can go get, you know,
we would, we will definitely attainthat that would be a nice piece
to pick up, you know, particularly you know, sometimes you throw you
know, another bat in your lineup, or one of the guys or two
of the guys get hot and hittingis contagious. All of a sudden,
you know, you get hot.You know, guys start getting hot.
(13:16):
Everybody wants to get in on it, and things will turn around. So
if there's a bat that's available thatmakes sense for us, we're not afraid
to move on it. Are youwilling to give up and it's I know,
for different reasons. The the youknow, the minor league system and
you know has been depleted for forsome reasons that we've talked about before.
(13:37):
Are you willing to give up highend prospects to get either that everyday player,
a bat or a whatever, thefront line pitcher. If there is
such a thing available to go geta picture, you willing to part with
top prospects. I mean, we'vedone it in the past, So would
you do it now? I wouldsay we'll do whatever. I would say
(13:58):
that we will do we have todo to try to get this team over
the hump. But ultimately it hasto make sense for the organization, you
know, it has to make sensethat we can get a guy that still
has you know, some time, whether he's got you know, we can
get him this the rest of thisyear and all of next year. You
know, that makes sense, youknow, but for a rental, it'd
(14:20):
be a little bit more difficult. That'd be a tougher decision that we would
have to make of the trade deadlive and so we will, you know,
we're gonna have We've already started tohave some discussions about different trades,
but you know, not that Icould talk about it over there right Ultimately,
you know, we're we're we're we'retalking about these things, and so
(14:41):
we won't make the right decision.Let me ask you finally, Jana,
before we let you go. Aguy like Joey low Braffido, you know,
the lad. It felt like thelast up and down was almost a
wasted you know, he's there andhe's back in the minor leagues. What
if I said he can hit onethirty? Why not use that guy at
first base and play him every dayand let him work his way through it?
(15:03):
Has that been discussed? It was, Yeah, it was tough.
It was tough sending him down thistime. We didn't you know, expect,
you know, DZ to get hurt, and thank god he didn't have
to go on to the I luh. But you know, as soon
as we can get low Pafiito backhere, we'll get him back. But
you know, it's just it wasthe timing of it was really difficult because
(15:26):
got hurt, and you know,we don't you know, we didn't want
to play short. We had alittle surplus in the outfield, not much
of a surplus behind the plate, and so we had to get some coverage
there. But ultimately low Pa Fidowill be a part of this team.
He will be a part of thisrun towards you know, as we get
closer to the All Star break andgetting to the final few months of this
(15:48):
Uh, low Pa Fido will bea big part of it. I think
he's come up. He's proven youknow that you know he's a gamer and
that he's he can learn on thejob and he can get better right before
your eyes. So make no mistakefor you know, all those who love
low Pafedo, we love him too, and he will be a part of
this run. Can he be ineveryday first baseman for you guys in twenty
(16:10):
twenty four, Well, I meanhe's gonna play some. He's gonna play
some first base, a triple A. You know, we don't know that
yet. You know, we stillwe're still evaluating him, but we're not
afraid. If he makes the mostsense, we're not afraid to do it
well. We'll try to get hisbat in the lineup somewhere or the other.
We haven't given him any big leaguegames at first base yet, but
(16:34):
ultimately I feel like he's going tobe a part of this run, whether
it's a first base or right fieldor wherever. Not right field but left
field. Sorry, there you go, Dana. Good luck in this series.
Great to have you on and thanksfor justin for us this week to
Friday, and we'll look forward toour Wednesday visit, which means we get
you in about five days. Appreciateyou and happy Father's Day to thank you.
(16:56):
