(00:00):
All right, we got our guy, Dana Brown. Oh okay, good,
(00:02):
there you go, astros GM DanaBrown for his weekly visit, and
we'll kind of blow through this breaka little bit and keep daying around.
Dana, welcome in. Good tohave you. You've been saying all year
long, and for two of youa year and a half now sean long
season. Hang with us. Well, here you are a week ago,
ten games out, a bunch ofgames, six or seven games under five
(00:24):
hundred, and literally in seven days, you're four and a half out.
You said you wanted to get tofive hundred by the All Star breaker better,
and here you are. This mustfeel pretty good about your team.
I know it's not you're not arrivedyet, but this last week had to
feel real good. Absolutely still reallygood here. Sorry for the reception we
couldn't get through here, no probley. Ultimately that, ultimately the guys are
(00:48):
playing better. And you know, when you're in this position, you know,
it's always exciting because the guys aregetting after it, and that's exactly
what we wanted. You know, the has been really good over the last
month or so. The guys arestarting to swing the bats. The defense
is really good. It's an excitingtime, exciting time here now and then
(01:11):
things are flowing in the right direction. Dany know, it's interesting about this
too. You you've preached this aboutyour team's going to get hot, and
you know, as fans and mediasay, yeah, yeah, but win
win, and you said it,But I don't think that was just cosmetic.
You deeply believe that this team wasthat good and here we are with
validation. I know you got tocontinue to sustain it, but this is
(01:33):
the team you expected come spring training. Correct, absolutely, you know one
thing, you know, I've beenin the game a long time, as
I always talked about, and whenI know the difference between a good club
and a bad club. This isa really good club. And I know
it was just a matter of time. It's one hundred and sixty two games.
(01:53):
We're just about halfway, you know, at the eighty one game mark.
You know, we're right on thebrink of growing getting the five hundred.
And I said, once we getto five hundred, you get you
get on the hot streak. That'swhen you push the envelope and you end
up five over, ten over, and then you're in business. So uh,
you know, the boys are trueto form. They're they're working it
(02:14):
out, they're grinding through it.I've talked about the grit that they have,
and uh, you know, they'replaying good baseball right now. Danny,
you with all with the naked eyethat we see in your expertise in
baseball that you see which is deeperthan us, and you're around the team
every day. But is there somethinghitting gym or something that we don't get
to see that is also part andparcel to this turnaround for your team.
(02:38):
No, I just think it's contagious. You know, good baseball is contagious.
When one guy gets hot and hestarts to hit, the other guy
gets contagious. The other guy justbounces off those guys, just like the
start of yesterday's game. You know, we got those four or five hits
right in a row. It justget contagious after a while. The guys
are feating off each other. Uh. And as I mentioned, it's a
(03:00):
team and these guys loved the game, and I knew it was just a
matter of time, you know, before they break out. And the one
thing we have to do is wehave to stay at it. You know,
we have to you know, thisgame can humble you. So you
have to keep grinding. You haveto keep your foot on the pedal and
keep it moving. Dan, I'mcurious about this, and I know it
may sound like an odd question, but what makes you more giddy? We're
(03:21):
in a time when launch angle andhome runs and power is important. You've
talked about power and slugging, You'vementioned it regularly, But what makes you
more giddy, Like when you werestruggling and you get to going good the
small ball part of it where you'regetting four and five hits in a row,
or when your team's power surge goescrazy. If you had to choose
one, what makes you smile alittle bit more? Yeah, I like
(03:45):
the small ball, you know, because I know that's what it takes to
be a championship club. I mean, you know, when it gets down
to it and the pitching gets alittle tougher as you know you get into
the postseason, you have to beable to play small ball. You have
to be able to get runners over, you have to do all the little
things to help you win baseball games. I know we're going to hit home
runs at times, but the homeruns aren't always going to be there.
(04:06):
There's times you got to drive theball in the gap. There's times you
got to get the runner over, you know. There's times you got to
lay down a bunch like Jake didlast night. That was outstanding, you
know. So there's times that youhave to play small ball, and those
those little things help you win alot of baseball games, particularly when it
comes down to the end when thepitching's really good. You only you know,
(04:26):
you need four or five runs towin the game. Astros GM data
Brown for his weekly visit. Weappreciate him. Know he's going to be
doing some travel in the next coupleof days. So glad we were able
to fit fit this in. Danawith the first base position, you had
spoken to us about, Hey,guys are gonna get it bats. We'll
mix and match and do the things. And I know it was a difficult
human nature decision for a bray you. But at that position, is your
(04:49):
current roster good enough to use guysto get the production you want from first
base or is that something you're goingto have to look at come trade deadline.
Yeah, I mean I would saythis team one of the more years
who they said our great year thatyear. But you guys still won the
World Series. I wasn't here atthe time. Uh, what we what
(05:12):
we'd like to have a first basementand a nine hundred ops. Absolutely,
I mean we get a chance todo that. You don't have to trade
deadline and it makes sense for us. We don't have to mortgage the farm,
and we can add to it.Well, we'll get after it,
you know. Uh. But ultimatelyright now, I think you know,
the mixing and matching. Uh,you know, it's a part of what
we're doing. You know, wehave to fight with what we have.
(05:34):
Uh. You know, we're gonnamix in dubond, We're gonna mix in
Singleton, and so you know, ultimately we you know that position, we'll
we'll mix and match and unless wecan do better and it makes sense.
Hey, let me get your expertiseabout the way you you know, when
in developing players and seeing their skillset, which is such a talent of
yours over your career. If Isaid five years from now, is Joey
(05:58):
low berfito and outfield or a firstbaseman? What would you tell me?
Yeah, I would say he's anoutfielder. I mean, with that type
of athleticism, I would say he'san outfielder, so for sure, you
know, can he can he playfirst? Well, we continue to give
him some brown balls at first base, Yes, but I think you know,
(06:19):
I mean, you see the divingplay that he made the other day.
Play he's going into the gap,No doubt. This guy's athletic,
he's got energy. You usually don'tput those guys at first base, but
if you have to, if youhave to spell that, you'll do it.
But you know, ultimately I seethis guy, you know, as
an outfielder. You know, butbut if you know, there's there's been
guys that could play first, thatcould play left, and I think he
(06:41):
could do you know, he coulddo multiple things. But with that athleticism,
you'd like to see him in theoutfields for sure. Yeah, Dana,
With getting to the injury thing, should we be starting with Verlander?
How concerned should we be? Anddo we have a timeline? Yeah?
I mean these things sometimes, youknow, they're a little bit tougher to
think. You know, we thoughtit would be you know, a quick
(07:02):
fifteen day I l and you knowthat he would be he would be all
right, But he still has somediscomfort in his neck and so we have
to pay attention to that, andyou know, we have to grind through
it as we wait for him tocome back. And uh, it's hard
to put timetables on injuries. Uh, you know, particularly with veteran players,
you know, when they get alittle older. So I think that
(07:25):
at some point, uh, youknow, we'll get him back. I
think he felt like he was feelinga little bit better yesterday, which is
good news. But you know,we want him to get back as soon
as we could, but we haveto we have to be patient and make
sure we don't rush him back. And Kyle Tucker has been such a durable
player here. You know, we'vetalked about it and this pain threshold and
that's a serious, serious, deepbruise injury. What is his timetable and
(07:49):
should we kind of temper our?Could this actually be to the All Star
break that we don't see Kyle Tuckeror do we expect him sooner? I
would expect him a little sooner.Yesterday he took the swings off the tee.
You know, we are playing well, you know, we're twelve and
six without him, but we definitelyneed him. You know, maybe that
twelve and six would be a littlebit different. You know, maybe we'd
(08:11):
be fourteen and four or something, but we're definitely gonna need him. But
he took some swings off the teeyesterday. That's a good sign. So
hopefully we can get him out thererunning and moving. I think it's more
so when he starts to run,or if he wants to make a quick
cut or a quick turn instead ofrunning straight line. I think that's part
(08:33):
of, you know, the sowordnessthat he feels. But I would I
had mentioned yesterday I thought maybe hopefullywe'll get to back inside of ten days.
It'd be nice Dan, if youhad to choose, I mean a
fifth starter. I mean, who'sthe fifth starter for you right now?
Who is that guy? Yeah?I mean we had talked about you know,
(08:56):
of course we use bloss but youknow for the minor show to discomfort.
He's actually going to play catch himtodays. So that's good. He
may be fine and he maybe maybehe can come back and help us fill
that spot. But we do havein house, you know, we could
you know, Dugan's you know, pitched for us last year. He started
some games. He's a good swingman. To have a guy who goes
(09:18):
on the I l maybe there's achance that you know, we could put
him in that position, stretch himout. He's got pretty good stuff,
you know, he got weapons toget right handers the left handers out.
And so right now, you know, we have a mix of a few
guys. You know, we havesome guys from Triple A the throwing the
ball well, aj bou ball. You know, we have Gusto who's throwing
well, he threw well again lastnight, and so you know, we
(09:41):
have some options. You know,of course, well we rather JV get
back here and we push everybody down. But ultimately, uh, you know,
we still have some depth that wedidn't we didn't tap into. You
speaking to put a smile on yourface, I would imagine Hunter Brown's doing
plenty of that. This guy lookslike a front ace the way he's throwing
the baseball. Yeah, hundred.Brown's been outstanding in the month of June,
(10:05):
and this five starts he's four andoh and you know he's dealing with
like a one, one and changeErnie. So he's getting after it and
it's been exciting to see because he'sbeen battling all year. You know,
we all remember the Kansas City gamewhere you know he didn't throw so well.
But guess what, that's what tellsyou. That tells you about what
I talk about this club, thegrit, the relentlessness of these guys continuing
(10:30):
to battle to get back to formto where they know they're capable of being.
And so he's a great example ofit. You know, slow start,
but he's been in the grind rightnow with that four and oh in
the last five starts with the oneErnie. I mean he's getting after Dan
a couple of just a couple moreminutes, We'll get you out of here.
And I appreciate you being patient withus with the phone lines. Let
(10:52):
me at the catcher position. Iunderstand with Victor, with KROTENI out,
is there any concern if a guyhe's got a hammy for a week and
a half, what would you dodepth wise right now if one of your
catchers missed any significant time And hopefullythat won't happen. Yeah, I mean,
I think we're gonna be okay inthat spot. Uh. You know,
(11:13):
Salazar has proven that you know,he could fill in the gap,
you know, for a week. You know, he comes in, gives
you good at bat, really goodcatcher, you know, really good receiver,
really good game caller. Uh,pitchers love throwing to him. So
you know, I feel good.I feel good about where we are catching
(11:33):
wise. You know, we're lookinginto you know, maybe adding some depth
to our triple A catching and andand that may help us. But you
know, ultimately, you know,we we feel pretty good in that spot,
you know. I mean, aslong as it's not a significant amount
of time, you know, wefeel pretty good. You know, we
want to get Karatini back. Hopefullyhe'll be back in three weeks or so.
(11:56):
But you know he's working his tailoff too. I saw him in
it in his room, getting hisexercises and stuff, and so, uh,
the boys had grit, they'll bebad. Yeank, you've been preaching
that. So let me in withthis. If you had and you you
love to talk to your players, and you know, just give him a
little bit of motivation at times, and you picking your spots. If you
had two minutes to sit down, which you do with Jake Arraghetty, maybe
(12:20):
you've done this. What would youtell him about his start today or about
moving forward this year? Yeah,I've always talked to Jay Arrogetty. I'm
sorry. I've always talked to Aragettysince he's been up, you know,
and I tell arag Getty, look, I like to see the fire in
your eyes. You know, whenyou have that fire in your eyes,
you're a different guy. You know. Keep the intensity and keep the fire.
(12:41):
And if you got that fire burning, you know how to make that
pitch. You can get it upto ninety six when you have to.
You can break that slider off. That nasty pitch is a swinging Mets pitch
at times, and uh, youknow, just keep the fire going.
That's what I would tell him,and that's what I've been telling him,
and he understands exactly what I'm whatI'm saying, you know, because he'll
have a game where he will cruisefor five or six innings and the fire
(13:05):
is burning. I just got totell him, Look, if you run
into a roadblock early and you giveup a run or two, turn the
fire on. Keep it going.Yeah. And I'm saying here thinking of
Jake Arietta. It's Spencer Arraghetty andJake Arietta, the former Cubs pitcher.
I think you and I are onthe same page, Aragedy. So there
we don't have Jake. We don'thave that Jake, but we do have
Spencer Aarraghetty. So he does havemajor league makeup, doesn't he? Oh?
(13:31):
Absolutely, you know, and andand the other part of this that
guys don't understand. You have tohave the heartbeat for this and the stomach,
you know, because sometimes you're gonnagive up a bomb and you got
to, you know, you haveto turn the doll up or you have
to you know, wipe it outand go get the next guy. I
mean, it's just part of thegame. There's other players out there that
(13:52):
are just as good as you,but the person who knows how to you
know, make the adjustments, thoseare the guys that end up on top.
And so so you know, that'sjust part of what we do in
baseball. You know, there's alot of good players out here, but
the players that have the heart andthe stomach for it, you know,
those are the ones that usually endup on top. Well, Spencer will
get that start today and a chanceof the sweep and in seven eight days,
(14:16):
five and a half games made upon the division. It's been impressive.
You've been preaching it and it's awesometo see in a lot of good
news from today's talk. We appreciateyou and we'll talk to you next Wednesday.
Enjoy the road trip after you geton it today, brother, appreciate
you. Absolutely chance to be fivehundred. Let's go astro fans get behind
us. There you go, Thanksa lot, appreciate it. That's Dana Brown
