(00:00):
We're about for the Shawn Salisbury Showcontinued. It's always great to have Steve
with us on this road trip, and they're in Toronto for the day game
today in a four game series. It's now at three and a half.
Astra's broadcaster Steve Sparks for his weeklyMonday visit, Steve, Welcome. In
ten days ago, this team wasten games out. You talked about get

(00:24):
to five hundred. We've had thisconversation. We blink, and it didn't
seem like a blink, but weblink. They're three and a half out,
playing really good baseball and overcoming stuffthat may happen a bad fromber performance,
and they find a way to godo stuff they weren't doing at the
beginning of the season. Who isthis team, Steve? I think they're

(00:45):
more like this team and this isthe office that we imagine the first months
of the season when they got offto a poor start. But they're playing
as well as anybody this last month. They're seventeen and eight, and I
think you're starting to see some guysemerge as bona fide, really top end

(01:07):
pitchers right now with Hunter Spitzer,Ari Gatty Flashes, Taylor Scott what he's
been able to do this year inera below one and a half. But
I told you early on and Ifeel still feel like this offense is one
of the best in baseball and they'restarting to show it. And there's a
couple of guys still aren't swinging thebats like we know they're capable, and

(01:30):
guys, there's gonna be ebbs andflows. But I feel really good about
this team, especially when Tucker getsback, that this is going to be
one of the toughest offenses to handlewhen you go into any series. Now,
would I would rather have good pitchingthe good hitting. Yeah, but
right now this is what the Astrosare dealt with. Steve, do you
think this is a good pitching team. They're pitching great. I'll say that

(01:56):
it's right, so you hold yourbreath whole lot. There's just not a
lot below that you feel great aboutcoming up. I mean, it's the
biggest reason why they had a bullpengame yesterday. I think Sean Duban probably
puts his name in the in thein the ring as far as being maybe
another starter, you know, ifthey keep stretching him out a little bit,

(02:19):
he's certainly interesting. But depth wise, can they take another hit as
far as an injury, then itdoesn't look like it right now. So
they got to keep them healthy. So that's that's the manage the workload,
whatever you want to do, theygot to be pretty careful. Steve Sparks
for his weekly visit here Astros broadcasteron Sports Talk seven ninety well, I

(02:40):
asked who the Astros were, Steve, who's from bra Valdez. Well,
he's somebody you can match up againstand he can dominate any lineup. That
that's who he can be. Whohe is on any given day. You
just never really know is he gonnais he gonna overthrow or is he gonna

(03:02):
stay within himself and be the groundball machine that we've seen And that's what
you're hoping you can get out ofhim, you know. You know,
with free agency and all those things, it tends to make guys push a
little further and try to do alittle too much, and you start to
look at your numbers as a whole. The man, I strikeout numbers are

(03:23):
a little lower than years past.I better start ramping it up to give
myself the best chance to get abig contract. And you start to do
things a little weird. So ifthey can kind of just manage that stuff,
you know, thank goodness. Imean it's not injury related or anything
physical. You can tell that becausehe's got such a great arm and great

(03:46):
stuff. So just to manage hisemotions and things of that nature. One
thing that I saw in this lastweek in particular, I'm starting to see
Bregman and Altuve go to the moundmore, you know, and initiate visits
and take a leadership role to tryto keep guys on the right track,
especially knowing that you got some youngguys, you got some guys that get

(04:10):
emotional like Fromber that they might needan extra touch Steve. If Fromber ever
gets to the point where he canmanage his emotions to the point of,
Okay, we're all listen. Idon't mind a guy getting pissed off,
but to be able to kick backin immediately and compartmentalize right back to being
the picture that he is. Ifhe can, ever, let's say,

(04:31):
get within ten percent of his physicaltalent, Now what kind of picture we
looking at. Well, we sawa couple of years ago before the pitchclock,
And I'm not blaming the pitchclock.I love the pitch clock, right,
but he had a routine where hewould step off with when he felt
things going haywire, where he wouldlook up, you know, maybe at

(04:53):
the foul pole and just kind ofreset and reboot. And it took about
twenty seconds or or whatever it didto kind of reboot and reset, take
some breaths, and go back andstart from square one again. So he's
not able to do that anymore, and I think he's gotten rushed in that
process, so it's a little harderfor him to reboot. Steve Sparks,

(05:14):
Astros Broadcaster Weekly, visit four gameseries in Toronto three and a half out
now and have reached what they said. I mean, Dana Brown wanted them
within five games by the end ofJuly ahead of that, and this team
has got to their five hundred stage. So Steve, let me ask it.
I know this is an unfair questionand there's probably not one answer,
but if you were pointing to tryingto explain to somebody who hadn't watched Astros

(05:35):
baseball, and they said, giveme a name of why the turnaround?
Who are the lead dog in theturnaround? Who is it? Well,
that's an unfair question. It is, of course it is. But you
know what, you're so brilliant.I can ask you one fair questions and
I know there are may be tenof them, but you see it all
is there, you know one whereit's like all of a sudden you just

(05:56):
hit you quick. Oh yep, that's the reason. And it may be
five of them, and it isa fair, but maybe one that just
sticks out that that there's been anintegral part of this turnaround for this team.
I'll say Hunter Brown, and Iknow he doesn't play every day,
but he's got a great chance towin the American League Pitcher of the Month.
He was a perfect four to zeroand the IRA and Bob Gibson territory.

(06:18):
You know, so his turnaround hasbeen huge for the Astros. I
mean, with Verlander down and someguys scuttling a little bit, you just
I thought I thought Hunter may havebeen on the verge of getting sit down
at one point, and to seewhat he's been able to do in his
last six or seven starts has beenremarkable. I really applaud his tenacity and

(06:44):
I love his demeanor and all thatstuff. He pitches a little angry.
Everything about him and the way he'sgoing about it right now, suggests that
he's very confident with that two seamfastball going in on right handers. He
keeps him on us now and heshatters backs. So Eric Gatty's picked up

(07:05):
what Hunter's doing. He's starting tothrow a two seamer now his last couple
of starts, and Eric Gatty hadno walks, ten strikeouts in his last
start. So you're starting to seea couple of these young guys really emerge.
So my answer is Hunter Brown, you know, but there's a lot
of guys. I mean, Jordanwas great this month, Yiner. A
lot of these guys really picked upthe slack, Yes, and it was

(07:27):
so impressive to see him get thoseten strikeouts. Araghetty with that no walks
which has been a problem for thisteam for walks at times this year,
and they look like they're starting toget it at least a lot of times
under control. You know, Steve, what's crazy about this Hunter Brown stuff,
considering where it's started and where itis and his grind to get better,
and no disrespect to Renelle Blanco orHurt Verlander, but in truth,

(07:47):
you look at it, and Iknow experience comes into play with this,
but he's pitching well enough now you'dhave to feel comfortable running him out as
a lead guy. If if hehad to get the start because of timing
in and opening series, you'd feelpretty comfortable he'd get through it and and
quite frankly, make dominate you.If he's got it right. Yeah,

(08:07):
I think he's got everything it takesto be uh a top of the rotation
pitcher. When you look at what'sinside and you can just tell that there's
a there's a really big heart.I probably said this on the on this
show before, but Dusty Baker talkedabout going fishing with him a few times
and learning some things and really gettingto know him, and he came away

(08:28):
just as impressed as we are.But one thing he learned about him is
that he has three older sisters.I said, what does that mean?
What does that tell you as acoach? He said, Well, that
means he didn't do anything for himselfand I got to kick him in the
rear every once in a while.I thought that was pretty good. But
I mean, he's a he's aself motivator. Though. Man, he's

(08:48):
a tough kid, so you know, you get somebody from the heart of
Detroit. I don't think you haveto worry about what kind of what kind
of guts are going to give youon a day to day performance. Steve
Leel look like a playoff team tome the way there we know playoff talent.
That was a no brainer when theseason started. But looked like they're
playing like a playoff team and havereally picked this thing up. And you
said June had to be a movingmonth and it has been. So let

(09:11):
me push this a little forward.Do they have to make a pitching move
for them to be a World Seriesteam? I told you this, man,
you don't have to do anything ifyou feel like you have to do
something desperate, right, But butbut to give you to give you a
better feeling about it because you're worriedabout the depth of it and it's a
little thin, is it would itbe a smarter move to go get another

(09:35):
arm if it makes your team better? It certainly is, you know,
And if you don't feel like youhave internal options, it certainly is the
trading the future for a big namebecause you feel like you have to,
right, Uh, I think you'vegot to be pretty careful just because of
the state that the Astros minor leaguesare in right now. You got to

(09:58):
think of you got to think ofabout next year at the same time you're
doing this, and I understand thatyou may not get any more shots,
you know, and you want totake all the shots you can while while
that window is open. But Ithink they've got an opportunity to keep the
window open for quite a while,so they've got a lot of talent.
But I would I would just becareful, especially in the pitching front.

(10:20):
And I think the Astros need pitchingmore than anything else, just because it's
thin and you're getting later into theseason and some of these guys like Blanco
and Brown and Arraghetti are gonna needa blow. They're gonna need a rest,
maybe a skip starter or two,you know, down the roads,
and maybe a six man rotation togive them some rest. But I would
be careful, you know, tofeel like you have to make a big

(10:43):
splash, because I don't think theyhave to. I think they're really good.
I think they would scare anybody goinginto a playoff series, and you
just have to, you know, you talked about from er Valdez a little
earlier. Coach them up, man, get them ready, you know,
and and help him, help himto get over whatever hurdle there might be
mentally, you know, in aseason where he's healthy, you can tell

(11:07):
he's so in ninety seven ninety eightmiles per hour. Uh, just get
him over the hump, talk tohim and help him get to what we
know he can do. Like he'llgo and run three or four starts,
but it's like what we saw inthat last start that leaves you a little
perplexed and wondering what could have been. No question about Steve all End with
this one, and we appreciate you. I know, got a day game

(11:28):
today in Toronto on Canadian or CanadaDay. Uh what is is? Do
do you think there's a chance thatthey're in play for an everyday player at
the trade deadline? Yeah, Ithink there's a chance. I think anything
is open for business. I thinkthey're gonna look and try anything. I

(11:52):
would probably like. If I wasthe guest, I would say it's not
going to be a huge name, you know, but I would say either
front. But one thing I thinkthat they need more than anything is I
think they need some pitching depth.I think they need some insurance, whether
it's another starter or a couple coupleof relievers. You get Louis Garcia maybe

(12:15):
back in a few weeks. Itsounds like he's doing great. His next
rehab starts going to be in CorpusChristie. That's a great sign. I
know. Mccollers isn't too far behindthat. And you're starting to see some
guys back. You guys aren't talkingabout ten Murphy at all, are you?
No? Well, I mean we'vementioned his name, but we have
gotten gone into no depth talking abouthim. Steve so he's been around,

(12:37):
and from what I understand, Uh, they're gonna be able to get ten
Murphy, who's a legitimate relief pitcherwho's gonna get some big outs for the
Astros the last month and a halfof the season. My eyes, that's
that's my prediction. So, uh, they've got they've got something. Kendall
Gregman has a shot to help himat the very end. He's ahead of

(12:58):
schedule his rehab stuff, So youknow, there's some other things kind of
going on that leads you to believebur later of course he's playing catchup.
Believe again, I think I heardthat yesterday. So you know, just
hold on for dear life. Goinginto the All Star break and figure out

(13:18):
a way to massage these young pitcherswho were pitching so well to get him
to the Fennis line. Yeah, good names to look forward to. And
Steve real quick. I lied,I had one more quick one and about
thirty seconds. Let you go.Is there a chance we won't see Kyle
Tucker before the All Star Break?I think there's a chance. Yeah,

(13:39):
yeah, you know, he hasn'tHe hasn't gone out to run or anything
like that, but I think he'sdoing some stuff as far as swinging the
bats and and things of that nature. But it's just taking time, you
know, And I know it's frustratingfor him. I saw him in the
lobby when we got to the hotellate last night and I didn't you know,

(14:00):
I'm sure everybody's asking him, soyou know, you don't want to
pile on there. But I knowit's eating at him to get back in
there to help the team. Buthey, hats off to the team fifteen
and seven since he's been gone, and he was their best player in the
first two months of the season,so whatever they had to do to pick
up the slack, they got itdone and had the best month of any

(14:22):
other team in the month of June, even without Kyle Tucker only playing two
games at the beginning of the month. Well, it's just phenomenal. It's
been a hell of a run,a hell of a month. Keep it
going and then get a little restat the allsto break and let's roll the
second half. Steve, great stuff. Enjoy Toronto and the rest of this
road trip. We look forward tonext Monday. Brother, Thank you,
Thanks An here. I appreciate youtoo. That's great Steve Sparks come back

(14:43):
and visit. Gave you names tolook forward to, and you know he
can be validated. Farmer's ramping itup. It's just to settle in mentally.
