Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're fact there for the Shawn Salsbury Show continues by
Astro's broadcaster in our weekly visit with Steve Sparks here
on Sports Talk seven ninety Steve, welcome in. You know
we're talking, Steve, and I know you see every single
thing in fine truth coment. Do you think when like
the Orioles, the Yankees, when any of these teams look
(00:21):
in their rear view mirror in the American League, do
you think that the first team they see is the
Astros as the biggest threat to them.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
I think the way they handle the Red Sox at Finway, yep,
I think he's probably going to garner a lot of attention.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
There's still a long way to go, but I think
you're right.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
I think everybody is starting to take notice and seeing
that this is what I see when I fill out
my scorecard. Feel pretty good about every night starter now
with Kakuchi in there and Arraghetti's pitching as well as
he is every single night, I feel like the Astros
have a great chance because of their starter.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Steve can't I make the call and I'm gonna get
back to the pitching in this performance and fanway, can
we make the argument that if the Astros go win
this division. I know it's a ways a way considering
what he's overcoming. I don't know if we've talked, maybe
we've even discussed this briefly, But isn't Joe Aspota got
to be in consideration for Manager of the Year considering everything.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yeah, there is a long way to go. So he
did everything he could to get back into this race. Yeah,
I applaud that, and.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
I think the.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Continuity of him and the trust and the communication, all
that has worked out perfectly.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Still a long way to go.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
One thing I do love now the way that the
Astros are playing and the Mariners. The Mariners are playing
good baseball too. The wild Cards in play now too,
And that seem that seemed like that was in the
rearview window about two weeks ago, three weeks ago. But Minnesota,
Kansas City, and Boston are now coming back to the
(02:00):
field and not only you want to win the division.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
But there's another way in now. So the Astros have
a couple of ways.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yeah, three weeks ago, Steve, that was that was dead.
I mean, we've talked about it. It was like the
chances are slim and damn near none. Well, here they
are now, and with this big sweep in Boston and
getting help from their friends. That's a good thing. Steve
Sparks Joneses for his weekly visit. All right, Steve, back
to this, if I were to tell you back in
spring that you're going to be able to count on
on a regular basis, Hunter Brown, Renel Blanco, and Spencer Arraghetty,
(02:32):
who have all gotten I mean, I know Blanco the innings,
but he's been consistent. Hunter Brown's gotten better. I mean
he looks like an ace. And then Arragetty, who's gotten better.
They're cutting down on walks. Steve, it just I mean
opposing teams would have said, no, no way, but here
we are. Just I mean, just those three focused right now?
Did Those are three guys that you're starting to get
the point where not only from fan base, but the
(02:53):
player's gotta you trust Hunter Brown to go in and
pitch Game two of a playoff series right now in
a big moment. That's how good they've been.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Nobody has more wins in all of baseball than Hunters
since June first, He's nine and two since then. Yeah,
we can rattle off a lot of statistics by these
guys now. But like I said, every single night, I
think you have the advantage with Kokuchi, who's been phenomenal
in his first two starts, just two starts, but he
looks great. But Arraghetti is getting stronger and stronger. Blanc
(03:26):
goes through ninety six the other night, and I thought
he may have been tailing off a little bit, but
then it looks like his.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Arm is starting to find that extra gear.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
I think I've told you this, there's a one hundred
innings kind of deal for starting pitchers, and this has
been going on for one hundred years, that there's a
dead arm period for a couple of three starts. The
guys go through, and you got to push through it.
You got to realize that it's just part of part
of the deal. You know, they go through it in
spring training at some point, or you know, the third
(03:57):
or fourth week of spring training, saying right around one
hundred innings, the one hundred and twenty innings guys will
go through those periods. And it looks like some of
these guys are beyond that now and have found new life.
With all these strikeouts. They look pretty strong, so they're
going to have to manage it. The rest of the
way out, but good signs with.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Verlander making his first rehab start.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Coming out of that well with fifty two pitches, and
you know, fingers crossed that he makes one more rehab
start fits back into the rotation when they start to
play sixteen in a row pretty soon.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Steve, think about this. We're talking playoffs and division and
possible World series. And we mentioned Blanco and Hunter, Brown
and Arraghetty and Kokuchi fromber who's been really, really good,
and none of those names are Verlander rehab, no Javier.
There's no Garcia, no Urkiti, no JP Frantz, no Lance
(04:51):
mc colors, and they still got I mean, it really
is the depth and the way they're taught in the
things that they believe in when they come here, like Kokuchi,
mixing in chain, all those things. Steve, I think it's
a fascinating season. I know it's crazy with a long
way to go, but I couldn't be more impressive. I
trust the fact that those five guys I named that
I can win with them, especially when I get the
(05:12):
bats from the top part of the lineup like I
got this past weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, you're right, and I think the mark of a
team or the measure of the team is how they
can endure yep, those gut punches, yep.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
And I don't think anybody's endured that as well as
they have this year, you know. So when you're talking
about all starting pitchers like that, and Kyle Tucker.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Is having an MVP type season to.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Be out for two and a half months, I just
don't think anybody else can do that. So I think
a lot of it has to do with confidence and
guys understanding that there's a system in place that they
just stay the course. I think Joe Spotto is a
big part of that, and to be able to do
what they're doing and where they are right now, and
(05:56):
now with the wild card also in play, you don't
want to look for the wild card in the division, yep,
don't get me wrong, But it's in play now.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
So that's that's two different ways you can get in
the playoffs. And once you get into the playoffs, anything
can happen.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
With what you said, you know, you look at the
way these guys are pitching right now.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
They've got a shot against.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Anybody, sure do Steve Steve sparks for a few more
minutes here for his Monday Weekly visit Tampa up next, Steve. I.
The way that this team's played and performed, and we
talked about the depth and the buy in and the
rest of it. And there's so many things you talked
about this weekend and in the way that they've done.
You mentioned Hunter Brown most wins and you know, nine
(06:34):
wins since a certain date and since they were twelve
and twenty two or twelve and twenty two or twelve
and twenty four, whatever it was, they've been like fifty
and thirty one and that the I eighty one game
since then. So just the way that they've come back.
But my thing is in this pave not fair question
if I say point to one thing. The biggest turnaround
for them may not be one guy, but one group.
(06:56):
What's the biggest reason this team has turned it around?
Because the Enies are still relevant?
Speaker 2 (07:01):
What is it? Well Bregman, you know he's starting to
hit the ball doing really well.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I'd say the biggest one though, is probably cater you know,
he had so many non sage situations early in the
season and it was a little disappointing early on. But
he's got a one and a half e RA in
his safe situations this year, so he's been knocking those
down when he needs to. He just didn't have those opportunities.
And the Astros are counting on that going into the season.
(07:30):
They were going to play six inning ball games, and
they just they weren't getting it done early. So they
turned it around and they've won the games that they're
supposed to. But I would say Hater and Bregman or
the two for me to come come to mind right
now is Man, you feel really good about the way
those two are performing right now? Those are those are
two huge pieces for the Astros.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Uh. The other thing.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
A little similar first game of this road trip, you know,
being walked off with the homer.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
In Arlington, yep.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
And it was a devastating loss, and for the Astros
to rattle off five in a row since then.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
It's a good point.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Reminds me a little bit of the World Series when
they had their most devastating loss of that postseason in
Game three in Philadelphia, and then.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Christian Javier and his brothers through the no hitter. They
never look back.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
So the way they respond to tough losses, I think
is what sticks out to me and the reason why
I bring.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
It up Steve, he took and you mentioned hater two
back to him. Took criticism obviously in the situations early
none say what twenty five in a row now, save
situations that he's closed out. To explain to fans why
they should believe he's still an elite closer. What do
you see that makes him an elite closer?
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Still, highest width percentage of any pitcher in baseball, You know,
that's what you want at the back end.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Somebody can get swing in minutes, gives up a double
the other night to Devers, which is the potential tying
run in the ninth inning, and Dever's never leaves second
base after that. You know, he strikes guys out, you
get to pop up. But he execute pitches at a
very high level, and he still has great stuff.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I trust him, you know, and I think I love
swinging myths in the ninth inning.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
And I think the Astros are really confident that he's
at the back end right now doing what he's always done.
He's a generational closer.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
And do you expect Yeah, he's sure as hell is
hence why he's been doing it so well for what now,
three teams in his career, or at least in the
major league level where he's been that dominant guy. Steve,
you do you believe that we'll see Verlander after one
more start and you'll get obviously a couple starts in August,
And do you think it's September when we see And
we're not doctors, but do you think it'll be September
(09:51):
before we see Kyle Tucker?
Speaker 3 (09:55):
I think Kyle's turned a corner. He's here in Tampa now,
this is where he lives. Yep, so he's here in
Tampa and I heard he's turned the corner. Should be
running some bases now, and I think that's a huge
sign on.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
The pain side, Steve, like where he's more pain free,
where he can where he can do those things. Is
that what you're talking about when you say, yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
He can turn and turn and push those things that
he needs to do to be able to be reactive
in the outfield and on the.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Base pass And I think I think he finally.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Cleared that hurdle, and I think it'll be pretty quick
after that. I think my guess is five to seven
games in the minor leagues or so, and hopefully he
can go out there.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
I don't want to put a timeframe on it, but
I think it's sooner than we thought.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
September.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
I think if I was the guest, I think sometime
in early September is when you could.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
Probably expect to see him back in the big leagues.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Yeah, I think I think Burlander is going to throw
one more rehab start and slide right in there and
go to a six man, And I think you feel
really good about those guys getting some extra rest.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
You got the six man says, wait a minute, I
pitched it pretty good, right, I mean, you know, I'm
saying it's a good problem to have now, and then
give those guys you ain't lying, my man, and it's
going to be one hell of a stretch run. And
what a shot in the arm it'll be. No, I mean,
no cliche intended when Tucker gets back to provide more
power from the left side. Steve great stuff man. Big
(11:16):
big series in Boston, another big series here, and that
may have been as important a series there was because
Seattle took their three in big fashion against the Mets.
So that was a huge series. And we look forward
to the call in Tampa and we appreciate you and
we'll look forward to next week on Monday, brother, Thank.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
You all right man, thanks for having you.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Bet that's great. Steve Sparks will come back and discuss
it's Sports Talk seven ninety. How about that all these
pitching starts and none of them have been from Verlander
or Hobby Air or Keaty recent to say that the
fact that this could be as impressive a season we've
seen from them if they pull it off, I don't
think that's overstating it. We'll discuss Sports Talk seven ninety
