Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're out there for the Sean Salisbury Show continued. Yeah,
for his weekly visit here on Sports Talk seven ninety
every Wednesday at nine thirty, Dana Brown joins US ten
games to go between Astros wins Mariners losses. We're at
seven for the magic number. Dana, welcome in. Let's start
first with team health overall, so we don't have to

(00:22):
waste a lot of time on each individual. Just where
you are with you know, as we head towards the
stretch here, and where you are with overall team health
and what are the concerns.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, I mean I think that you know, our guys
are are getting better. For sure. You know, we lost
Gamble to the fracture. That's you know, that was a
tough loss for us, you know, but ultimately, I think
we've monitored Bregman's time well and I think he's filling
the whole lot better and so he's going to be

(00:55):
able to post, and so you know, I think that
you know, we're pretty much you know, the turn in
the corner. I think the guy's feel a lot better,
and you know, ultimately we'd like to get this thing
clenched and give these guys a little bit of a
breather down the stretch, We're still trying to monitor giving
a few guys a day off here in the day

(01:15):
off there. These guys have been grinding. You know, as
I've always mentioned, one hundred and sixty two games, these
guys have grinding. We've got ten left, so one point
fifty two so far, and you know we've been in
the grinder. So ultimately, U Tucker, he feels pretty good.
We're getting back to back games for him. And you know,

(01:37):
I think by the time we can get this thing
clenched and get into the postseason, we should be one
hundred percent. Dana.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
With that about rest, you know it's a slippery slope
on do you keep it with momentum? Do you get
the guys going? I mean the seven of the nine hitters,
the first six last night, oh for twenty one? Obviously
you want the big boppers to get into a rhythm.
Let's talk about rest. Will you rest, so, I mean,
will Joe rest the players leading in and tell it's
clinched or are we going to play the full go

(02:06):
right now until you get it clinched before a couple
of days of rest, hopefully before the playoffs start.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yeah, I think you'll see some type of combination. I
don't think we'll rest multiple guys. I do think you
have to give, you know, some of our guys a
little bit of a breather. I mean, Penia has been
playing almost every day, you know too, they plays almost
every day. Eurodan plays almost every day. These guys are
been in the grind and you know, the tough, the

(02:35):
type of season we've had, and so I think we
have to give these guys somewhat of a breather as
we rolle forward. I don't think we'll put two of
our big guys on a day's rest on the same day,
but I do think we have to mix in a
day off for these guys particularly. I mean, he may
even try to give one of these guys a rest today,

(02:57):
you know, after playing a game kicking in as for
midnight last night, you know, and then he got a
game today, So I think maybe he may even rest
a guy today.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Tucker had day off yesterday, so curious about him with
missing what seventy plus games, Dana and trying to get
him where the power bat and he's got his rhythm
that you talked about, getting his rhythm where it's dialed
in for the postseason. Let's specifically focus on him. What's
more important for him now, rest or reps.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah, I think it's a combination because you know, he's
he's just outside of the spring training mode because we're
trying to get him those back to back games, and
so you can't you can't ride him too hard because
the worst thing that can happen is, you know, he
pulls a hamstring or a grime, you know, just because
you know you're playing every day. So I think he's

(03:49):
going to have to get some rest. I think it's
timing is fine. I think you know he's he's having
quality at bats. He's starting to drive the ball, and
I think you guys can see from watching a game
that you know he's not fully running as fast as
Tucker would usually run. But I think he's getting after

(04:09):
it and you know he's getting there. So I think
we we have to pull back a little bit, and
that's why you'll see him get those days off. He'll
be in a lot of today. I'm sure he had
a rescue. He was rested yesterday.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Still not though, Dana, still I mean, still working on
getting back. Is it when you say spring training mode
Is it spring training mode health wise or is the
spring training mode timing wise?

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah, I think it's spring training in terms of you know,
we always talk about being in baseball shape, yep, and
I don't think he's back in baseball shape yet. You
could tell with his lower half, you know, for those
of for those of us who's watching the game, but
he's the lower half. You know, I don't think he's sprinting,
you know, as fast as we've seen Tucker sprint, you know,

(04:56):
we've seen Tucker still basic. And you know, I think
first the third is fine. I don't think his sprint
down the line or you know, the stolen base factor
is actually there yet. But I do think he's getting there.
And you know, as I mentioned, the worst thing you
could do is try to push him too hard, too fast.

(05:17):
But we still have some time, we still have games,
and I really feel strongly that by the postseason he'll
be in uh, he'll be in baseball shape.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Astros GM Dana Brown joins his first place Astros ten
games to go, getting closer and closer to clinch, and
joins us here for his weekly nine to thirty visit
on Sports Talk seven ninety. Let me Switch to the
pitching staff and Kokuchie, you made this deal, We've discussed
it and it's been awesome. Did you I know, what
you expected because you made the deal. But has he

(05:47):
exceeded your expectations?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, I mean we still have a few starts left
to go, and you know, so we want to see
him help us get there to the postseason and then
do well in the postseason. I certainly feel good about,
you know, the way he's been throwing, and so, you know,
as we sit here in Houston and it ain't over yet,
so we still have to grind through this and get

(06:11):
you know, get to the postseason and also let's try
to get deep and get back to winning the World Series.
But uh, we're certainly you know, pleased by you know,
how well he's throwing in the start that he's gotten
off to and so ultimately we've been very happy with
the trade.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Your weekly analysis of Justin Berlander, where are we?

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, I mean his last start was pretty good. I
mean I think he's really getting through it, and you know,
we will continue to evaluate his starts. You know, I
think he may have like two more starts left, and
you know, but it was really really good to see
that he threw well, you know, his last start, grinding
through the five innings as I mentioned before, and uh,

(06:58):
you know, he really turned the corner. So we're hoping
that he continues to build off of that, and then
we'll make our assessment as we get closer.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Danny, your your hitters have set such high expectations because
they I mean, well, they've proven it and track record
says it. But are you concerned at all with the
inconsistency of the big boys up front?

Speaker 2 (07:20):
No, not at all. You know, you faced the guy
like Cease last night. Filthy, filthy, I mean really one
of the top pitches in baseball, uh, you know, wicket slider.
But you know, I'll tell you what our guys will,
they'll get dialed in and and and yesterday was a
really good example of postseason baseball. It was a well

(07:42):
pitched game and you know, you know, the pitcher who
made the mistakes was going to be the one that
would take the loss. And so you know, our guys,
you know, we grinded through it. You know, their bats
were tough, you know, but see, you got to take
the cat you gotta give them credit. But I think
that's getting us ready for postseason baseball. I think we're

(08:05):
you know, at the position where these guys will be
dialed in. They've done it before. These guys, they're not
strangers to the postseason. They're not raw rock guys. But
these guys will dial it up when it's time. And so,
you know, getting to see a guy like Cease this
late in the year, I think it's a good thing
for the club because it's going to be a reminder that, look,

(08:28):
this is what the postseason is going to look like.
You're going to face all of the best starters from
the best clubs, and so you better get ready.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Danny, you're a big confidence body language guy. We talked,
you like to just spit around and get a feel
for what's going on. Been in baseball a long time
from last year to this year. Confident just what you
see from the body language and players, Uh, confident and
just business as usual.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Yes, totally confident. As I mentioned this, this group has
the heartbeat and the stomach for this, for this run,
for this postseason, for all the runs that you know
we've been on here in Houston. Uh, there's no panic,
you know, and I think some of the other clubs,
you know, you watch guys, you know, towards the end,
down the stretch, you know you'll see you'll see panic.

(09:14):
But I think this guys, these guys have been through
it so much here and I think there's just no panic.
And and I've learned that about the club because you know,
when I first came in, I thought like, man, we
got to get a little bit more raw rah. But
that's not the way these guys are. These guys are like, look,

(09:34):
we've been here before. We're not going to panic. We're
going to keep the heartbeat down and you know we're
going to get after it. And so I trust these guys.
I trust the way they played, you know, coming back
from ten games back when you're when you're starting, rotation
was depleted, and you know, these guys, you know, all

(09:54):
turned the corner. They stucked it up when they had to.
And that's just the makeup of this club.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Does it Does it bother you that it's not more
raw raw? I mean, just in all your years of baseball,
do you do you is there a feeling or do
you just do you just put the trust in veterans
and I'll let them police what they're doing. Does the
raw raw lack of raw raw bother you obviously a
lean on more production.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Yeah, I think I think with sometimes what we don't
see behind the scenes, you know, like the game the
other night, it was a big game that we won
in San Diego. The play that was made by Kessinger.
I thought our guys were I thought our guys were
fired up. I think, you know, that's what our guys are.
You know, they'll have moments where they get fired up,

(10:39):
but they're not this raw rock club. And I actually
like it because I think it works for them, and
you know, they're able. Like I said, to keep the
heart rate down because that's an important part of baseball.
You cannot panic in this game. And if you panic,
you know, you see Kessinger come in the game the
other day, he hadn't played, you know, just me the

(11:00):
unbelievable play to end that game. And that's you know,
that's that's what this club is. You know, Tessser made
that nice play last year when we played Texas and
the CS. You know in game five. You know, he
just comes in off the bench, and this is what
this club is made of. And I think there's moments
behind the scene and then sometimes even in the in

(11:22):
the clubhouse and in the dugout. These guys get fired
up and we don't always we don't always see it
on the field, but ultimately, these guys know what they
need to do to win, and I trust them.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
A couple more minutes with Dana Brown Sports Talk seven
ninety our weekly visit with Astro's GM. A couple, just
a couple like overall baseball questions, Dane, we haven't talked
to you about this in a while. One is, and
I know you have so much respect for the umpires
in baseball and the reverence with you hold it in.
But just on the electronic part of it, what's your
thoughts on electronics strike zone?

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Yeah, I mean, it'd be great to have electronics strike zone.
I think it's in the works right now. They're trying
it out and triple I think these guys, uh, the umpires,
you know, they make a ton of calls. You know,
they're still in the nineties percentile whiles in terms of
strike and balls called. You know, it's just that, you know,

(12:15):
we all get frustrated at times because often when it's
a big moment in the game, it's like, oh that
was that looked like a ball or you know, that
looked like a strike, and and so the frustration for
us rises, of course. But uh, you know, all in all,
these guys are still in the mid ninety percentile in

(12:35):
terms of balls and strikes called. But it's painful when
it's a ball or a strike called on you and
it's it's you know, it's not the right call. I can't,
you know, to be honest, it's painful. But I think
you know, getting electronic strike zone, you know, will be helpful.
I think we're working it out in Triple A and
I think at some point, you know, all the players

(12:55):
were welcome getting the calls right. I think that's where
we would like to be get the calls right. We
could all lay down at night and say, look, we
got beat by the other club. But it's tough. You know,
when a call is blown or a ball is far
outside and it's called it's called the strike, and you know,
those things are tough to deal with. But I think
there's you know, the things put in place so we

(13:17):
can get this thing right. But you know, it just
hadn't filtered to the major league level yet. We're trying
it in Triple A. But you know, for the most part.
You know, as I mentioned, these guys are in the
ninety five Cintown in terms of being right. It's just
the frustrating part. It's that four or five percent when
they miss. You know, it's always frustrating because it's it's

(13:38):
a big moment of the game where you feel like
the game is getting away from you.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
And finally, baseball business and you know with the season,
win a championship, the rest of it, but people want
to know about business. One of the favorites in Houston
Alex Bregman. When will you guys get more urgent on this? When? When?
When will you approach this after the season? How quickly?
And where are we?

Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah? So when we were in Ana, I'm you know,
I had a quick conversation with Boris because he you know,
he was there, he was at the stadium, and so
you know, at some point we will have the conversation.
We're not in talks right now, but you know, make
no mistakes, you know, or make no mistake, We're going
to have some conversation about Bregmant. I mean, I think
Bregmant is a big part of this team. I think

(14:27):
he loves being here and we love having him and
so at some point we will we will sit down
and talk. But Bregman has done a lot of great
things for this organization and we love to see him stay.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Hey, Dan, was there any sense from Scott Boris that
that there was frustration that it hasn't been talked about
or is he in the same league as you guys?
We got time.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
No, not at all, no frustration. It's just you know, uh,
conversation and we we had a quick conversation and we
said we're going to talk about it. And I I
think he knows where we are, we know where they
are in terms of wanting to stay, and we want
him to stay, and so it's just a matter of
us sitting down and trying to come to an agreement.

(15:11):
But there was no no urgency, no panic. I think
he knows well that at some point we'll try to
put our best foot forward.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
All right, my man, At this time next week we
hopefully be division champs. That sound pretty good to you.
I think that sound that'll be another one. And then
rolling through the postseason and get some guys some rest
before that starts sounds.

Speaker 2 (15:33):
Great to me. I mean, we need to get this
thing before next Wednesday. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and we get that.
Before next season we'll be fired up, astro Fan, we'll
be getting ready for the postseason again, and so you know,
we're excited. It's been a long year for us, but
we stayed in the grind and we're in a good
position right now, being twelve over and five up. We

(15:55):
tend to go. So let's go astro Fan.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
Yeah, one of the more phenomenal from where you were
and where you are now, it's unbelievable. And we'll talk
about that again another time. Thanks, Dane, appreciate it, and
good luck these next ten and we'll talk to you
before this postseason starts to look forward to next week.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
All right, take care now, you too.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
Appreciate It's Dana Brown. It's Sports Talk seven ninety. Come
back and wrap it up here on a Thursday. He'll
be back on Wednesday next week. I had to move
it a little because of nighttime scheduled late games. That's
thanks to Dana Brown. It is Sports Talk seven ninety
