Speaker 1 (00:02):
Saulsbury. Old, Okay, let's do this.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Sean Salisbury, there to usc truth, longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Bryan Lima, go Lobos. This is the Sean Salisbury Show.
Welcome back in the studio.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Yeah, good to be here. I'm getting there, man, getting closer.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
All's well, how you guys doing? Yeah, Man, good morning.
Jordan has uh let's see a knee sprain. Officially had
some X rays yesterday, showed some inflammation, got an MRI
and it shows that he has a knee spring. He's
gonna be out this series. But the hope is he
can play against the Guardians.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I really don't know how to trust this, to be
honest with you, I don't and I don't mean it
just I'm just talking about history wise. I don't know
how to treat this with the with the Astros, I
don't even know why. I mean they The question is
that is it just a bruce? Is it just a sprain?
(01:12):
Should I say because the last one was just a
deep bruise?
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Right? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Now, I understand they protect their players, but uh, you
have reason if you're a fan to question how severe
this is. Is it just really just a two game thing?
He's back no problem or is it deeper than that,
and they're hoping that he recovers quick. But I get
why they pretend, like I said, after the history of
knowing when they've told us, you know, from Javier sore
(01:41):
neck and he's on the eye out with it, you know,
Tommy john so with Kyle Tucker, Bruce Chin. Seventy plus
games later he's playing. So I get why they protect him.
But I also I tread lightly and knowing when somebody's
coming back. I actually think for me, as good as
this team hit when they're going good and they are relentless,
(02:04):
but there are times this year when they've gone through
streaks of they just don't hit. My biggest concern is
in a short series they picked two games not to hit, Yeah,
and you get eliminated.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
And that I mean one day you look at it
and then Jordan's got two home runs, three guys hit
his solo, I mean, all Homer, they rake up seventeen
hits and you're like, all's well. Then two of the
next three games they can't muster up two runs. That
it concerns me that they could go through a quick
(02:36):
series of we just didn't rake and if they do that,
that's the scary part of a wild card round.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yeah, and especially if you go against the Tigers, because
the way it stands right now, Scooble is going to
pitch game one for the Tigers against the Astros in
a wild card series. That guy's nasty.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
And then when you get up a game, guess what
now you yea, Now the pressure falls severely on the
team who's down one. I just my concern is, I
never thought I'd say this about this team. Is the
consistent raking throughout the playoffs because when they're cold at
the wrong time. Now, fortunately, their pitching has been good
enough to keep them in games when they don't score
(03:18):
a lot. But like games last night, what they did
four hits. Yeah, And if you go through two games
like that, and I assure you the Detroit's pitching staff
is formidable at the top and pretty good and relief too,
and they're playing really good baseball the second half of
the season. It's a dangerous situation that concerns me. And
Jordan's injury, I'll until I see him back out there
(03:41):
going one hundred percent, then it'll concern me about how
severe it actually is.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yeah, and we know how it goes with the imaging
and medical reporting, injury reporting from the astros. The original
scan for Kyle Tucker showed a bone bruise. Christian Navier
had a neck injury justin Verland or just a neck injury.
Next thing you know, Tommy John for Christian Javier, next
(04:06):
thing you know, two and a half months for Justin Verlander.
So knee sprain. I don't know if that's good news.
I don't know if that's bad news. I'm assuming it's
better news that to hear that there's no injury with
his ac L, m c L, whatever else is in there,
what it's use in their PCL, the ligaments seem to
be okay. I don't Oh, I can tell you in
(04:26):
the knee injury world, you would know better than anybody
in the knee injury is sprain, knee is the world?
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Is fine, severe sprain. There's no way he's missing just
two games or three with US series.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
If it's severe.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Now, if they can clinch this and give him a
little extra rest, maybe that's a good thing. But until
I see him out there with withhold my judgment on
oh yeah, he'll be back in two days. I don't
know if he'll be back in two days because I've
seen them. I mean, what was supposed to be two
weeks ended up seventy five or whatever games for Kyle Tucker,
(05:02):
So we'll see. I just know this, this team has
to hit in a short series. You can't go two
games without it because the pitching. Now, everybody's pitching is good,
and the first game, the first series, you'll face that
Detroit team's pitching is really good upfront, especially the guy
they're gonna run out there first.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, last night for the Astros, like you said, four hits,
Al Tuvey, Diez Pania, Jason Hayward. They scored one run
and it was on a solo blast from Jason Hayward.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
And Hunter Brown did a nice job again last night.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, six and these pitch three hits, one and run eight.
K's three walks.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Good. Trust.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
It seems like every time he goes out now he's
giving you a good outing, giving me a chance.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
But you're not gonna win even with that.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
You'll waste an out and given up one run as
you saw last night in a clinching situation.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
So it's not like it didn't matter.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
They were trying to win it last night and get
it over with, and Seattle said not yet.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
So there we go.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Caleb Ferguson came in, gave up a run. Brian King
came in, gave up two runs, Seth Martinez two runs,
bullpens a little beat up.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
I mean this, we're getting down to the stretch, and.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Man, oh man, first of all, you just got to
clinch the division four game lead.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Gotta win tonight from Valdez on the mound. Like I'm
not trying to trying.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
To go to that whole route of it's a must
win game, but damn, you gotta get this division locked
up so you can at least secure a playoff spot.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
You don't want to.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
You don't have to come down to you know, God
forbid you lose two out of three or get swept
by the Mariners. Next thing you know, you're pressing and
you're going into Cleveland. Take on the Guardians and.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Listen.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
And the last thing you want to do is let
this thing fester until you get no rest at all.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Right, so they want to say no rest. At least
you clinch it.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
You can pick and choose who you want to get
rest on any given day, and if if even on
the mound, you can skip a start if that's what
you need for somebody, and move somebody up, slide somebody in,
if somebody needs a little extra rest. Whatever it is
you want to do, you can do that. But not
until it's done and stranger things have happened. They say,
(07:12):
I want to put that. You don't want to be
in that situation. Yeah, and they say no rest for
the wicked? Is it the wicked or the weary? Wicked?
It is money, don't grow on trees.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
No rest for the weary, or no west for the
No rest for the wicked. Yeah, this one is ain't
No rest for the wicked. Cage the Elephant.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
Was this a song? Yeah? Oh okay, what we had today?
How on to Tuesday?
Speaker 2 (07:34):
I was to say, if we had an alternative rock today,
I could, you know, throw that bad boy up there?
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Whose things? That well known band, Cage the Elephant.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Yeah, I love them, great group. I can't wait to
see him live, really yeah I can't. I'll get you
a couple of tickets. Oh, I got them backstage. Oh
are you like a groopie? Well, I'm sorry a roadie
the road We're just tired. I Follo him around, wear
the T shirts all the time.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
That's good. I love I love those old school alternative
T shirts. Share They're pretty sweet. Yeah, unlike them.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Do you do you think there is something to be
said with how how this season has gone for the
Houston Astros and that they just flat out might be
tired having to grind out so many different wins to
cut that tent they started ten to twenty four, right,
So what I'm saying is, do you think it comes to.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
A point where you just hit a wall? Right?
Speaker 2 (08:33):
And you know, I'm not I'm not saying you need
the rest, but like, damn, like, that's got to be
a lot this season to climb out of a ten
and twenty four hole. You're down ten games in the division,
You bust your ass with all these different injuries, and
then just you get to a certain point you're like, God,
I'm just this is just exhausting.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, that's real.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Where you've extended all every ounce of energy emotionally, physically,
and mentally and there's nothing left in the tank. I
think that exists. Fortunately it can't, Yeah, it can't. Dodgers
are tired. Uh, the the Atlanta Braves are tired. I'm
sure Philly's tired. Who was in the World Series last
year Arizona and the Rangers. Rangers obviously played tired all year.
(09:17):
The Arizona's tired, and they're in a grind trying to
trying to get themselves in this, you know, in a
in a good position.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
So yeah, no, you're you're I do believe that's real.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
I do believe that you can expend so much energy
in the chase by the time you need to kick.
It's like somebody who kicks too early, but they needed
to kick. They had to or they wouldn't even be
in this position to be in the division lead right
now with a chance to clinch.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
Yeah, I believe.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
I don't know how much it exists here, but I
do believe it does exist. That you extend all and
every ounce of the energy you got and by the
time you get there, you say, man, what's left in
the tank? Hence why you got us? I mean the
ki it's weird, it's I know it sounds, but it
is like a race that did we did we kick
too early, but unfortunately they put themselves in position early
(10:02):
to have to chase the entire year. Well, when I
say chase the entire until they got up. So what
the last they've had a lead for what two months now, yeah,
a month and a half whatever it's been, Yeah, something
like that. But at that point in time, now you're saying,
we don't want to fall into it, because you know,
your whole thought was, well, Seattle's going to get hot again,
and they really haven't extended hotness for a while now.
(10:24):
They've been up and down the hole, well since service,
before he got fired, after he got fired, it's just
kind of been up and down for them. So you're
in a great position. But yes, I do believe it exists.
But you have to reserve enough in the tank or
be veteran enough in the tank and have enough youth
that you've got to somehow, some way, you got to
call on that energy level that's there and whatever's on reserve.
(10:44):
Because I'm sure everybody's tired, but the astros a little extra.
This will be a lot of years in a row
where they're playing extra baseball and it'll catch up to you. Yeah,
that can't be an excuse in the end, though.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
The chase mode is more so what I was trying
to say, but you said it way more elegantly than
I did.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
They do.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
They chase so hard that that when you when you
chase that hard that you can I've seen it on
teams and then all of a sudden, you get to
the last three or four games, say okay, we're here,
and then you just can't quite muster up enough.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
Now they're gonna win the division.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
They're gonna take care, they're gonna win a game and
finish and finish this thing off. But it's just a
it's tough sledding, man, it's tough sledden, and it's hard
to win, and it's hard to win when you've been
in the you know you're the you're the dog chasing
the rabbit the whole time. You're not the rabbit, and
they've been the rabbit in the division. But it didn't
feel comfortable ever. Even at five and a half, you
(11:40):
felt like six games it feels better.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
But baseball's too odd.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
We've seen too many people come down late and finish
and go on a streak where you're like, non, they
won ten in a row. Yeah, so important to keep
that in mind. But they have to muster up the
strength and you hope that injuries and you know the
veterans that they've overcome the injuries that they can handle
as the veteran group, knowing how to get the rest
necessary and mentally be sharp enough to take care of
(12:05):
their business.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Jo Spottas spoke to the media last night about Jordan
Alvarez and his injury. What is the latest and how
much time could he miss. We'll discuss the next right
