Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we're about.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
The Shawn Salisbury Show continues well about to Sean Salisbury
Show here on Sports Talk seven ninety Sean Salisbury, Brian
Alemamanuel Elmore. As we do every single Friday, eight thirty
in the morning, we welcome an NFL insider, Aaron Wilson.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Yes, we do always a thirty on Friday, k PRC
channel two where you can catch Aaron Wilson will all
this great stuff on Twitter at Aaron Wilson and also
catch him here, go to blog check it out, does
unbelievable work across the NFL. And right here for the
Houston Texans. All right, Aaron, tell me why we should
(00:45):
be concerned about They're two and one, But should we
be uncomfortable with the start overall as a football team
for the Texans.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
There are enough reasons to be concerned. The pass protection
gives you some pause. There are i would say proliference penalties.
That is probably the most least troubling thing because it's
very fixable. But the running game has been non existent
other than the first game and the cold, civisive and
vulnerable against the run, and that was with Joe Mixon
(01:18):
pound of the football and then he gets hurt. Injuries
are a reason to have some you know, healthy amount
of tempaticism about the depth because of you know, they
didn't run the ball well at all with cam Akers,
they kind of stopped running. They fell behind. But you
know there are only a couple of ook runs with
(01:40):
a nine yard run but averagely got two yards and
change per carry against the Vikings, his old team. This
was a big deal to him. And then they can't
get any traction. You know, they can't get any community
because of the false starts and the illegal formation penalties.
Legal formations really fixable fall starts, the concentration issue, that's
(02:03):
not the largest concern, but they are vulnerable against the
past two deep throws. That's been a pattern they that's
don't have. You know, Jimmy Ward's growing injury. He's if
he's for this week now because of this latest injury.
He's had growing and hip injuries in the past, so
(02:25):
that's something to watch and have tank bell this week
to the British groups. So you've got a fair amount
of things going on, and then no mixing and no
Pierce so it's the same backfield as last week. And
then after that, oh, I mean there's optimism too, but
you ask for things that are problems. Those are the
(02:48):
problematic is in my list as far as you know
where they're at. I think they can rush the past
very well. They can generally stop the run. Been do
it against Sarah Jones. But I think overall it's going
to be a good front set and it's stopping people
and creating conflict for quarterbacks. But I don't know. I
(03:10):
think upside is fine. I mean, they still probably win
this game, even I think they're a bit shorthanded. I
just don't think very highly of the Jaguars. I don't
think anybody really does at this point, not as franchise
right now that people have a lot of respect for
Sherman Lawrence is declining. They basically have ATM and that's
(03:33):
about it. And they don't have a ton of dudes
and a few guys on defense. Yeah, I just don't
think this is a game where if you have an
injured player even you don't have to necessarily you know,
play them and you know, rush them out there. Because
(03:53):
the Jaguars aren't that good.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Aaron Wilson fow them on Twitter at Aaron Wilson KPRC
channel too. Well as well doing all his great work.
All right, let men get back to how long we
How long is mixing out for?
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Do we know till week to week? So when you
already missed two like this week, now we're into the
three four. So I don't think it was an ir
situation ever, It's just might feel better next week, might
be a chance for to get back out there from Buffalo,
(04:26):
but maybe not. I mean, the thing is too we're
getting close to a time where you need a ramp
up week because you've been out that long. We practice
for a few days and then play football again.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Aaron with you mentioned and they're still two in one.
Then they beat a couple of teams that are not
very good right now, and this team this week is
a bad football team. You're one hundred percent correct, meaning Jacksonville.
So with that, let me get the tunsil stuff. They've
been in the league since twenty sixteen. He's he's a
hell of player, wants the ball snapped, but well, well
it's not the biggest issue, but it's a big issue.
(05:00):
It's going to cost him a game and maybe already
has been part of it. This can't continue, and the
accountability and goes with it. I don't want to hear
about crowd noise from any of that, and I love
the guy and the player, but when the pre snap pas,
this can't have it's a lack of focus because at
some point you just got to go on movement and
it's putting his team in a bind. So, how difficult
(05:22):
or how firm was Dimico's conversation with a veteran who
needs to be better when the other four guys aren't
moving at the line of scrimmage. How difficult was that
conversation or firm was that conversation between Dimico and Laramie Tunseel.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
I mean, I know he emphasized them a pretty too,
like these that words or anything like that, but it's
an emphasize of the team meetings and they've they've talked
about it incessantly really since the game happened. But he's
not the only one that they're talking to about. You know,
they have you an issue with the Senate where some
(06:01):
of the center's movement is causing some of it. It's
also causing juice scrugs to get the same penalty. And
then you have the illegal formations, which is they're saying
as a debate with where they're lined up. And the
thing is they should have known it because it's the
Hockeyley crew which called three of them in one series
(06:22):
in the first series of the season against the Ravens.
Obviously that's their tendency. The league office told them to
watch that, so they're all over it and you can.
There's analytics for all the rest as far as Laramie
and then the how you know firm you view him.
He's also one of your best football players, so you
(06:43):
don't used to work with him in a constructive manner,
you know, hoously it's serious and stress it. He gets that,
and you know, I think I'm not going to an
interview with him after the game, And hasn't you know,
chatt with him informally this week? But uh, you know,
I think some of this stuff with him has been
(07:04):
over the top as far as reaction with fans and
some of the press. But he's still the guy that
block Miuth Geartt and does a lot of good things.
But yeah, it's he could afford to be late to
your point, Sean, like you know, wait to the ball
snaps and still block his man because he's that talented,
right and so it's he's always looked for an edge,
(07:25):
always wanting to jump. It's not that he doesn't know
the snapcam because if somebodyle are like, well don't you
know what snap you know when it's when it's on, uh,
that that's not the issue. It's a more of a
compulsion for him trying to get the edge. And I
don't know if you what you do about that, but
you just drill it, drill it, drill it, talk to
(07:47):
him about it. But it's you know, he's a leading
penalty guy in the NFL. Statistically, he's been flagged ten
times with nine accepted and they rank third in the
NFL penalty So we're all it was twenty eight accepted
and two hundred thirty three hours, significant amount of yardage.
We'll talk about there, all right, Aaron.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
With the secondary, as you mentioned, giving up some big
plays and sam Donold played a really good game last
week and moving forward to this one, and they're not
nearly as capable in Jacksonville. Capable a little bit, but
not nearly with the way they're playing. So with that,
giving up the big plays in the secondary here and
you mentioned, you know, injuries to the offense will Bobby
Slowick and with your on your third running back, third
(08:30):
string running back, will we see more attack, push the
ball down the field mode this week so they can
get back into what we have more explosive coverage.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Yeah, so yes, I think you have a little bit
of the iffy situation with Nico Collins. I'm told that
Nico is going to try to play right. He's a
hamstring and so he's in treatment around the cloud trying
to get loose enough se with limited and yesterday's practice
added to the editor report, Hamshring's tight, and they'll see
(09:03):
can he know get up and go and get the
separation that he normally does. There's no one really in
their secondary to be super concerned with the Andran Cisco.
I mean, there's a couple of good players, but they
just don't have a lot of guys and there's no
Gamin Ramsy's flurking around there. It's just they play that
(09:25):
in demand. They should be able to be man coverage.
We've seen that in the past with when he was
out there Tank Dale. Tank's got the bruise ribs and
not expected to play. We'll see you run out there
for practice. I don't think he will I think he's out,
and you know you can get it done with other guys.
So you've got Stefan Diggs, You've got Dalton Salts. I
(09:48):
gonna have a little bit of more of Xavier Hutchinson,
Robert Woods, maybe John Mattually a third to be active
this week. But those are some things going on. But
I think you throw the ball in these guys. I
don't see why wouldn't be able to. I think that
Theudiu drives are very precise, very good passer, good leader.
I think there's yards to be had. Maybe you're run
the ball. I'm much I don't know. It's not thinking
(10:11):
without making that the backfield that that's going to be
like at the forefront of their game plan. But I
throw the ball. The problem they've had with the other
stuff is too high and what you do to that
is you run the ball and you throw intermediately. But
it does cut off a deep pass and the statistically,
so it's fourner. Your four to three yards is the
(10:35):
average combined passing yards per game overall for these games.
So passing is down around the league. It's a historically
low level since nineteen ninety three. The past, it's declined
each year, the past four or five years, a lot
of it is it's too high. Yeah, and yet.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
Every real thing, yet, every every rule in football is
set up for the offense to be successful. Is and
and you mentioned it. Two things you have to do
when you're playing two high safeties. You've got to be
able to run the ball. You can't let a team
play in two high safeties prevent you from running it.
You just have to be That's just called attitude and
(11:13):
grown man stuff. Secondly, when you play too high, there
are plenty of spots to hit. You've got to be
a patient thrower if they're going to play too high,
and you've got to throw a deep dig route or
make sure you're hitting the vendor behind the mic linebacker.
You've got to be efficient in the short the intermediate
passing game and take Patience will be your top thing.
So patients and the ability to run the football. If
(11:35):
you can't be too high with your quarterback and your
receivers being accurate and moving the ball methodically down the
field and run it, then you don't deserve to win.
It's easy to beat if you're a patient thrower, and
we know this kid is good enough to do it.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
He is, and it's just a matter of thing he's
got to call the right plays. CG City is the
most confidence by the slower. It's just, you know, we've
all got to buy in. So I guess is that
the buy him. You know that that's something they're talking about.
So we'll see how it is this week. I know,
been talking to Bobby yesterday, the offense coordinator. It was
(12:10):
interesting to hear a lot of his comments. He was
pretty steadfast, just like Nico Ryans has no excuses for
the penalty, and he also acknowledged that they got unblocked
guys running free and it's not the way it's drawn up.
He said also that I think there was five times
he could count where everybody meeting, every single player was
(12:31):
playing their assignment. So that sounds like a coaching issue
and a coachability issue for these guys. So they have
some things to fix over there. And for offense that
was hyped up. I mean, remember we were talking about
three thousand yard receivers things like that. They are not
looking up those expectations so far.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
No doubt, great stuff, man, this would be nice to
play a complete game. Got a hammer Jacksonville. They're not
very good and we'll look forward to next Friday. Go
do your thing as always, my man, We appreciate you.
Thanks Aeron, that's a great Aaron Wilson, and come back
and discuss five plays where everybody was on the same
page and what sixty plus plays that you can't do.
(13:13):
Sports Talk seven to nine will discuss next
