Speaker 1 (00:02):
Say, old, okay, let's do this.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Sewn Salisbury there to usc true, longtime friend Shawn Salisbury.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Bryan Lima, go Lobos. This is the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
I mean I kind of went ahead and I buried
the lead right there. As you know, I was saying,
if you're waking up, you're probably like, well, wait a.
Speaker 5 (00:28):
Minute, you know where's Lilima. He's off today. Uh, he's
on assignment.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
That's what.
Speaker 4 (00:34):
That's what a buddy of mine always, you know, so
you don't give away people's personals.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
They're on assignment. Yeah, so Lima's on assignment, sex change assignment.
Speaker 5 (00:41):
No, like on assignment, like he's he's doing work outside.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
I got it. I just just say it like it is.
Speaker 5 (00:47):
He he needs uh load management, he's a load leaves
is a load load management. Okay. So he played like
four innings and so I gotta give him day off.
D m P coaches, Yeah, I did scheduled dated. Listen,
it's a long season, Danny boy, you know what I'm saying. Uh,
And I told him, I said, listen, you play about
(01:08):
four innings every other day. Take take the day off.
I mean, why wouldn't. I Hopefully it'll be back tomorrow.
I got to see how is you know, if wor
his metal attitude is. You know what I'm saying, I
gotta check it.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Get him in the cage, yeah, me, and maybe get
him out in the outfield runing little bit.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
We want to get a big game type decisions. Tripley
and I are making a game type decision. But hey,
I don't want to overwork it. I mean four innings.
Four innings is a tough stretch, right. He gave me
like sixty pitchers. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. I mean,
and then I would like this, Yeah, give the right,
give me Matthews, Yeah that's yeah. The what was it?
(01:42):
Or the what's my guy? Ozzie wanted the big fellow
Bobby bobbye. Yeah, he'd wrap it around like he's hugging
a big old fat guy.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Yeah, give me, give me the big tall exactly.
Speaker 5 (01:52):
I simply it was wasn't a toy. You just touched
his wrist, didn't pound it. Joe just put his two
fingers on his wrist. And then you get he's taking
your pulse. You need to get the a J.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Hinch. And I've even seen Joe do this a little
bit just a simple point.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Yeah, the point I'm a I'm a hold like you're
holding the force Sam.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:08):
And it's like like side arm when I'm walking out.
I look, I point with the left and go like this,
you give it the double, the double with the right wrist, like,
give me this, especially if you got double barrel action
in the yea, because then you know it's one of
those that the bullpen coach out there is like you
want the left e, you want the right like who okay,
I got to stick it out wide so he knows
it's the writing there you go. But yeah, so Lily,
(02:30):
I mean load management. I mean I'm trying to work
him into being a KG veteran where he can handle
you know, seven and a third.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
But you know, give a little.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
As they talk about with Alex Bregman, he posts every
day exactly place hurt. That's a place hurt. One of
the great cliches. Ever, that's it. Now you'll be back.
That's exactly what it is. And there is a big
difference injured. You don't play hurt.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
You do.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
Okay, you see what I'm saying there, you got it.
But you know, some guys will miss a week because
of hangnail. So I don't think we've got li Lima
there yet. I think he's tougher than that.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Now. I mean that you played long enough you know,
to know too that there are certain guys that if
there is any sort of issue whatsoever, can't count on him.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
He ain't gonna goude if.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
There's a hit, if somebody's got a cold in Pittsburgh
and he's in California, not l Lima, but those we
all know that guy, right, Yeah, I can't go today.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Well it's tough man.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Well, the buddy of mine's sisters, brothers, grandmother's friends, dad's mom,
sister don't has to go to has to take the
kid to daycare today. So I can't comme in that
that goes outside of the locker room because we all
know that guy or girl.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
We we've all worked with them.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
Is there was a guy that I worked with in
a previous market that it was one of those things
that it was almost a running joke.
Speaker 5 (03:48):
Don't ask him how his day is. Don't do not,
because you'll keep you there for twenty minutes the woes.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Because it is not just a well, you know things
are good, you know, how is your morning? That's good, Like,
that's the normal response there. You know, if I'm a
little tired, I feel great. Yeah yeah, if you saw
if you saw me. Although, funny thing is current Jets
interim coach Jeff Ulbrick. When I knew him in Atlanta,
remember you know, he he'd walk up to people, Hey,
how are you feeling the day? A little tired? No, brother,
we don't. We don't talk that way, and there you go.
(04:15):
That's that's talk, right, that's good dude.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Man.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
That was That was those you know, the the Pete
Carrol guys. You're always that way.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
If your coffee's cold, it's still hot if you want
it hot, right, the sun shining regardless of how much
it's raining.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
That's Pete. He one team, one hard people.
Speaker 6 (04:32):
There.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
There you go everything. He was a huge coaches.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Everything's great even when you know sometimes maybe it's not.
But it's that constant seeing the seeing the good and everything.
So yeah, that that that one guy. So he'd keep you,
he's gonna let you go. It's like the winning what's
it e or and winning the po that the dark that's.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
What it was.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
I mean, it was the Donkey's ears were always back down.
You know and just letting you know.
Speaker 5 (04:54):
Oh, well you know, let's let's let's role play.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Hey, what's what's his name?
Speaker 5 (04:58):
No, leave his name out us Steve to protect his Yeah, yeah,
we'll go Steve.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Okay, Hey Steve and man, good to see. How's your day? Well,
you know, the dog woke up that he was a
New York guy. Oh the dog woke up this morning
wasn't great. Let outside, back legs aren't work.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
It's like, I dude, look, I love dogs as much
as anybody. We took him to the vet. He said,
he's a little sore, but he's gonna be okay. Then
the game meds and then I went to the pharmacy
and it took me fifty and I can't believe the
price of pharmaceuticals for for pets.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
See that's where like it's almost kind of the the
Larry David or even like Seinfeld kind of interactions of
you know, hey, don't talk to that guy because you
know what you're gonna get right.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
And I mean, and that's the.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Thing, like, you know, you take mental inventory of everyone
of you know, you see him in the hallway, I better.
So funny thing is, former boss I used to work
with just me and give that resting bitch face and
nobody will talk to you. So when when we're at
SEC Media Days in Dallas, me and Gordy this past one, yeah,
this past one. So former boss I used to work with,
I was not the biggest fan of ran into him
(05:58):
once talked to thumb all right, whatever, and he used
to come by our table to kind of, like, you know,
just kind of make small talk. So I had Gordy
to start to do a little bit of like run
interference of Hey, if you see him coming, let me know.
I immediately would put my headsets like you and then
I'd start, you know, point to the point to the microphone,
Hey buddy, and there's nothing going on.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
In your ears. Yeah yeah, yeah, absolutely, there's one of
those guys. Yeah yeah, Do you avoid it all?
Speaker 1 (06:25):
You've got to, you know.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Hey, look, you know I learned a long time ago
you got to put up boundaries with certain people.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
And that's one of them.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
And another one too is boundaries is at a gym
or at an airport. Especially to you ever do remotes.
This is a PSA for listeners out there. We love
talking with you whenever we're out remotes. We would love to,
you know, take pictures, do all that kind of stuff.
You see the head you see the headsets on. Conversation, Yeah,
wait till the wait till the headsets off. That is
that is the visual. Do not approach that. Do not disturb.
(06:54):
If you're at hotels, you know, you get the placard
on the door, do not disturb.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Remote one on one. That's it.
Speaker 5 (06:59):
There you go, remote it, remote one. We'll take the pictures,
we'll do it all. We'll listen to the stories. Well,
well we'll hear your your suggestions.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
As if you're the PD that that's the one that
always cracks me up to hey, hey, you know what
you guys need to start talking about. I'm like, you're
immediately gonna lose me now, Like that's that's that's the one. Yeah,
that's that's that. You're gonna that you're gonna go where
you own the station. We're pros for a reason doing this, buddy,
Like I think we know, like what's you know, what we.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Believe is the hits. We like to play the hits.
That's it.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
We love to play the hits. I mean, and then
it leads you to triple a big hit player. He's
a huge hit player. But you're right about remote the
headsets on, but got to go nothing to hang on
to about twelve minutes, will be right back at it.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
That's it, nothing but hits and bangers. When it comes to,
uh to hey, tripley, what what's today?
Speaker 5 (07:49):
Is today?
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Thursday? Thursday? Or what do we what do we go?
I was I was gonna ask you that.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
And tomorrow could be freak Show Friday, even though we know,
I mean, even though it's even though it's, uh, what
do we call it? It's uh?
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Uh what? What? What's our music?
Speaker 5 (08:01):
Again? It's the Fights on Friday? But it can we
can lead into it's it's freak Show Friday. And and
there's a plotthora of options to go with on Fridays.
Fight song Friday right there? Yeah, what do we normally
call Thursday? What Thursday? Uh? Throw back? The should have
known that because it's Thursday. So what do we want today?
We want seventies seventies rock or seventies soul? Last last
(08:25):
week we did triplely didn't we do a motown?
Speaker 1 (08:28):
Was that?
Speaker 5 (08:28):
Or was that motown Monday? Or did we do it
on Wednesday? Did we do motown on this past Monday.
I think we did, didn't we So Thursday, Dan, you're
the you're the guest today.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
I mean, you know, I'm always a rock guy, and
I actually was going classic rock this morning for whatever reason.
I was for two of the new Jersey legends this morning,
Springstein and.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Who else bon Jovi.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
I should have known that well, especially.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
To you know, with bon Jovi, it's watching the Aaron
hernandez FX thing.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
And of course he was Tyl Belichick. That's a matter
of fact. Belichick was aly. You know, Belichick was a
roady for him in the eye. He'd go and travel,
he'd travel to go watch mon concert. Roady up a lif.
It wasn't just once in a while in Jersey or
in Boston. Yeah, a big time.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
You got Belichick moving hands, oh yeah, and drum drum, belichicking.
Speaker 5 (09:13):
What people don't know about Belichick. He's a lot more
fun than people think.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
He's showing that now, which is fun to see. He
was listen.
Speaker 5 (09:19):
He had a job to do, and he did it
quite well, sure, and maybe different than people would like
a job. Well, he's He's the one hundred and eighty
degree difference of Pete Carroll when it come to jovial
and everybody in the room and Joe Brown, but just
to come work effectively for both. But Bill when he's away,
whether it's the boat, I mean, you know, so many
fifty years younger than him, these dat he got Belichick.
(09:41):
Belichick's a fun dude. Now, see it's funny too.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
Julian Edelman on one of his numerous podcasts that he does,
he brought that up about you know, one of the
concerns there were the reports of why didn't Belichick Atlanta,
why didn't he get any of these other jobs? And
it was relating to players, and Edelman's point was incredibly valid.
He goes, I think, if anything, he's shown you he
can relate to players even more now with his dating life.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
I was, yeah, exactly, it's like, hey, can you relate
to players? Well, the woman i'm dating younger than my
second year star, So I'm pretty good. Don't hate whatever
Bills got by, But yeah, no, he's a lot more.
He's a lot more when I say fun, yeah, a
lot more, you know, free and easy when he's not
around doing football all the time.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
So I know he would be a tough get in
terms of a show, but he wouldn't. Now, I would
hope not, and it would be fun to try to
get him on. But where I'm going with this is
I see that now John Gruden is back on social
media and he's doing kind of one of his you
know videos or whatever.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
All the time. I want to get Gruden. Yeah, Oh,
he'd be a blast. And I know that it's probably
gonna come up.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
The parameters can't talk to the NFL stuff, all of that,
all right, fine, Like I'm talking about like the legals.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
Oh yeah, we want to talk football a little personality
and just you know, there's no question because I definitely
want to get him on.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
But he's one of those guys like you just say, hey,
coach C. J. Stroud, Well, I'll tell you what I LoveJ.
Stroud Man. That guy's game.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
Man.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Yeah, there you go your groove.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
We had agree and we don't even have to You
don't have to ask him five questions. No, he'll take
you where you want to go. Real quick. About Belichick,
and I think I've shared this. It's not a pat
on the back, but to show you how what he
meant to me. I and I'm gonna tell you this
and this honest to god truth. I don't even know
if I've shared it on this show. Then when I
was doing television ESPN, my goal was not to talk
over the new person, the amateur in football they didn't
(11:24):
know when you're doing a studio show, and not to
talk under the expert because I know. I know for
a fact that those guys were watching NFL live in
Sports Center. They tell you they're because they're looking for
any insight they can get from somebody. I always love that.
Oh I don't watch all what they do, at least somebody,
and I love respect the ones who tell you they
actually watch. So we're going through and a huge Belichick fan,
(11:45):
right whether you like his personality, I love him, and
I love the way he goes about his business on
how to build a team, and he's just if you
like axes and oh Bill Belichick knows him as well
as anybody put Belichick and saving on one of those
boards like you see saving a college gamemen.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
His personality, yes, phenomenal.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
So I'm at ESPN doing television and you know Bill.
You can't talk to assistant coaches with Bill, but he
always I know this for if he respected what I
did because I wasn't a hot take guy. I talked
football fairly without you know, making things up on that.
I'd watch it and talk it fairly, don't make it personal,
right right, and I and I would make it. I'm
not telling a team, well, this team plays cover two
(12:21):
when their base coverage is not cover too, and they
only play it two percent of the time, where you
just bs and the fan.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
I can fool a fan on television, you just can't. Well.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
The good news is, though, too is I mean, you're
probably one of those guys that can ask certain people
a question, not certain morning show hosts.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
They can't ask certain people a question, right, Yeah, because
you play, which is so absurd Jerry. I wish Jerry
was aud here because I'd back up our ja and
seat and say, He's exactly right. If you can't answer
a tough one, you're not No. One of your team's
not winning if that's the case. So with Belichick and I,
I really in every single NFL Live show, I told
myself this, and this is honest to god truth, I said,
(12:56):
what would you say if Belichick was watching again today? Sure?
Speaker 1 (12:59):
How would you like?
Speaker 7 (13:00):
So?
Speaker 5 (13:00):
I wanted to not to please him, but it was
almost like the experts approval right, And so I did it,
and I'd go do features like I did a feature
on Brady. So I didn't just want to sit behind
a desk and be a blowhard if I criticized some
of your compliment. I wanted to make sure that an
NFL count on. I'd go do features. So I'd say
something on Monday, and I'd be in Baltimore Raven's locker
(13:22):
room on Tuesday, or in New England on Wednesday. Because
I've showed my faces that have sent somebody else to
do it. You want to stand on a strong and
if I give a hardcore opinion. I did it against
Baltimore one day in the year they won a Super Bowl,
and I three days later they sent me in to
do a feature on the defense.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
I walk in it.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
Syrah Goose looks me pissed. He goes, get over here,
and Ray's standing next to him, and I walked up.
He goes, I can't believe you know saw the features,
says and he has tagos You're kind of right, and
give you a big old hugged racing. But if I
don't show up, they normally say, well, this guy just
sits from Afar and doesn't come back up. And it's
not just you go there when you say good stuff.
(13:58):
I had to walk into there after I criticized them.
I saw, and I saw Ray missed like three tackles
in the game, and Ray doesn't miss three tackles in
five games two and I talked about I walked there Ray.
You know, I watched the saved Tay he goes, he was,
he was great about it. It was it was fair,
and it was that's why it's supposed to be.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
I don't have obviously, I don't have the chops of
what you have in terms of playing, you know, and
having that type of reputation. I'd only run into a
similar situation once and the player you know, tried to
make a show of it in the locker room to
talk to you, and and all I just said was
I quietly walked up and I go, Okay, what did
I say that was not true? What what did I
say that was not true? If they can't answer, then
(14:35):
there's do just mat on the emotions.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
I turned around, I walked off, right, And so you
show your face and they respect you more, not just
sitting me out the death. So and Belichick when I'd
always seen him, he was always kind, come up and
shake my hand or get you a half hug. So
about six five, six years into my career at ESPN
that you know, we have our own little mailbox. These
teams will send Christmas cards, so you get some of them.
Some were just you know, signed, but they don't know
(14:57):
who they're signed to. And he wrote me a personal
card and note. That's nice, and I still have it.
And the only reason I say it not a pound
in the back is is that it meant so much
to me to get that approval. So the way he
wrote the note, I'm thinking, that's how I know he
pays attention, right, And I cherished it because it was
a guy that he didn't know that when I went
on TV, I wanted to make sure that if he
(15:18):
was the guy judging me that I was talking that
x's and knows that I was accurate and that's the truth.
So and when I got it, I'm like, when I
saw him next, I said, thanks man, it meant a
lot to me. And then he's just playing the no deal.
But it meant it because it was in his writing
and handwriting. It wasn't a form letter and that kind
of told me that the guy with all that non
emotion we wanted as he pay attentions, he care that
(15:40):
he does care and you're seeing all that personality. And
it's still to this day is one of my five
favorite like go to the mailbox' just like mailbox money,
but this wasn't money.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
It makes sense, so it meant a lot to me.
It was mental money.
Speaker 5 (15:50):
That's a real well and I still think about it
to this day, and I still do when you're giving analysis, think, okay,
at Belichick sitting in the studios, look like you're a dumbass,
or does he look like you know football?
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Sure?
Speaker 5 (16:01):
And that meant a lot to me, And then you
know the opinion. I just don't think he's a He
never liked the blowhard hot take stuff and probably still doesn't.
And you won't get him saying it right. If he
says it, I would imagine he believes it. He's got
something behind that's exactly right. Yeah, So good stuff anyway.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
All right, So we'll get into the Texans a little
bit as the show goes along, as they get ready
for the Green Bay Packers up at Lambeau. As matter
of fact, we'll get into it a little bit coming
up next, cause a lot of people focusing on this
part of the matchup on Sunday. I think there is
one for each side that both teams are gonna need
to worry about. We'll discuss that on the other side
(16:38):
as we roll along here on the Sean Salisbury Show,
Dan Matthews and for Brian and Lima here Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Let's go.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
This is the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
But Mike, this cut like a couple of kiss Oh yeah,
the kiss the foul to finish Mike tur Rico onions.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
Yeah, I uh, that's a Let me tell you, there's
not a personal live that's driving in their car or
just woke up coffee. That cut plays in. Your energy
is at a whole new level. Oh that's a pre game.
Let's go lay up line. If you're or in your
headset before you go out, the layup line or good
batting pressure you get into You've taken a couple of
(17:21):
swings and all of a sudden, the you know, the
music person in the in the building while people are
filing in a batting practice that kicks in. All of
a sudden, you're instead of hitting gap to gap you're
pumping it up into the upper tank. There's no doubt.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Yeah, you're you're, you're, you know, going after Bobby Dynamite
up there on the uh on the railroad track.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Yeah right, you are above Bobby D. You don't think
about Bobby D.
Speaker 8 (17:42):
I I don't Boy's nuts going to some speech.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Oh yeah, I know Bobby Bobby D's nuts.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Yeah, I walk I walked right into I should have
seen it. I should have read it.
Speaker 5 (17:58):
Like a book.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Is awake right now, he said, if he's not, he said,
got his ass? I was leaning.
Speaker 4 (18:03):
I was leaning you you picked me off at second,
got him leaning?
Speaker 5 (18:09):
You got him?
Speaker 4 (18:10):
I was like Jazz Chisholm, and you knew that feeble
replay attempt was not gonna work.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
Got his ass? You got me? Yeah, you're about to go,
oh yeah, I love.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
I just I solemnly sorry to jog back to the Dougoutyeah,
it's it's hope that nobody would.
Speaker 5 (18:26):
Say anything in six twenty six. You're thinking there's no
way these nuts comes out. That's no. Well, you know
it's like like you throw me a first pitch fastball,
Why wait till you get up on me? One? Two?
You don't know if you're getting another good one. Yeah,
where you could throw me the sweeper. You can throw
me a two steamer. You pump a dog on a
slider on the other half to see what he's got.
You threw me cheese. Do you throw a fastball down
(18:48):
the plate? I got up protank it fish. If I'm
looking for it, I'm swinging. You're damn right hunting fastballs. Brother,
You did well, You did well. You set it up.
I gave one hundred and ten percent it, Dan, I
took it one these nuts at a time. You know
what I'm saying, Tripoli, That music got me going. Yeah,
you're cleared my mind and bammed these nuts. Yeah, you're
(19:10):
a real blue collar guy, knows to the grinds. Yeah,
launch guy, first guy in, last guy out.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
That's it. Yeah, yeah, all of them.
Speaker 5 (19:17):
It's incredibly you know what, hey, uh, working will and
wishing won't. Just remember that Danny Chuck Pagano would be
proud of you. You know, he was a g A
at my at SC when I was Do you do
you know what the coaching staff was when I was
my freshman year?
Speaker 1 (19:32):
Lay it out?
Speaker 5 (19:34):
RC Slocum defensive coordinator Dave one Stead defensive line coach
and linebackers. So David Dave Wantstead coach defensive line.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Did RC already have the white hair back then one
set with the mustache?
Speaker 5 (19:46):
Oh yeah, oh wants to have the mustache. RCI did
just a little salt and pepper. But so RCI. Artie
Jigentina was one of the great he would be in
this day'd be considered one of the five best recruiters
in the country. Right, and coach linebackers. Pagano was the
Uh was a g A Hudson Hawk, Dallas Cowboys Hall
of Fame offensive line coach all those years with a
(20:08):
mind of that offensive line coach we had, Uh, why
am I losing my mind? Uh? Mike Holmgrian's offensive coordinator
in Seattle, Gil Hapscholl was our wife coach North Turner
offensive coordinator. I was going to say when he took
over for Paul Hackett, who you know who that is?
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (20:26):
And his son who's having a little trouble in New York.
But that was that. That's part of the staff there.
You think, yeah, you think you think that, you think
we were pretty good. It's gonna say all those guys
going to the going to the NFL. And I told
you too that uh one of it was actually your
teammates brother, but he played in the league too. Uh,
Sammy Knight work out with Sammy Ryan Knight. Let me
(20:48):
tell you real quick, Sammy Samuel validate this from Rubideau
High School in California. Ryan Knight six foot six one
May six foot six one two old five freshman year
walking and was the number one recruited running back in
the country.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
And Sammy came on after. Was a good defensive, a
good player. Man. Well, you don't play in the league
if you're hot.
Speaker 5 (21:08):
Ryan Knight would bench press when he he'd won, when
he was done warm up to twenty five, he'd put
like three fifteen on it, and when he would go down,
he would stop two inches from a chest and hold
it and push it back up without using his chest.
Now as the running back dude he was, he he
was jacked, but his bench and people were tripping. He'd
(21:30):
bench pressed like four or five, but at three fifteen
when he'd still be warming up, and he'd do it
for like ten or twelve, and he would bring it
two inches. He never he never bench press touching his chest.
And you know some guys will bounce into it. Yeah,
and so you mentioned Sammy Knight, Ryan Knight, I wish
the world could have got a really good taste of him,
because when he came in and smooth is is is
(21:50):
as that dog on freshly, you know, wax tile in
your kitchen. Man.
Speaker 4 (21:54):
Well, especially me play if you're gonna play running back
at sc with that lineage, yeah, you better bring it.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Damn right and go. Just do yourself.
Speaker 5 (22:02):
But he was as higher recruited as any of those guys.
Just do yourself, favorite, whatever it is. Your your warm
up is do twelve of them and don't touch your
chest with your bet. And now imagine a two hundred
and five pound running back at about three point fifteen
is doing it and not banging it up his chest
in bench press four or five. And that's back in
the in late eighties, mid eighties. Well, a lot of
(22:22):
guys would tell you they do that, but you got
to see it. The same guy who says he runs
four to three and then he's never broken four four
five because his hamm he's always tight.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Right, Ryan, I sat there.
Speaker 5 (22:32):
And watched with my own I said, three fifteen not
touching his chest, and that's a one hundred and ten
pounds more than him. That was warm up weight, and
he's doing it for reps. Craziness. Matt's you know what's it?
Not going to day?
Speaker 1 (22:42):
No, no, not going.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
We all knew those teammates. They're always our favorite, all right.
So what I teased coming out of the first segment,
we're actually gonna do it on the other side part
of the Texans Packers matchup. That's going to be massive
on Sunday. We will let you hear that next right
here on The Sean Salisbury Show, Dan matth Few, Shawn
Salisbury Triple, Emmanuel Elmore Sports Talk seven ninety. The Shawn
(23:06):
Salisbury Show continued, as I'll try to go through these
as quickly as possible. Sean is hez Aushai here, he's
got a knee, Henri too at, he's got a concussion
at least in concussion protocol. Kamarrow last year, Jimmy Ward,
Robert Woods, they were all DNP yesterday. As the last
(23:26):
three I just mentioned right there, they're not going to
go this week. It sounds like at least what Aaron
Wilson are seven ninety contributor thrown out there and Joe
Joe Mixon limited, but it's a Wednesday practice. I mean,
I think it's also too slow and steady as the
race when it comes to being able to, you know,
make sure that he's good to go for Sunday.
Speaker 5 (23:46):
I don't need my running back once the season starts.
If I'm Derek Henry in Baltimore, no, I'm not practiced.
I don't practice him much during the week. By the
time Thursday hits he I mean, you don't. I've been
on team. Just some guys. There are certain guys that
will have a teammate to Kenny Easily. It was a
Hall of Fame safety ease. His legs were and his
feet were beat up, and you know, Chuck Knox was like,
(24:09):
and you know how some guys said, why is that
guy practicing? Well, he had enough skin in the game
and Kenny easily if you moved in the hallway, Kenny
easily hit you. And he was like, this is a
freaking football playing Jesse. So he'd pull the sweats up
and he'd like, help coach during practice. We didn't need
easily to practice. And if the running backs who take
that punishment, why do I need Derek Henry running around
(24:29):
every day. Just as long as you're mentally into the
new game plan, get a few carries, get the lactic
acid out. Derreck Henry ain't carrying football very much during
the week, and neither should I had Joe Mixon. You
think I need to tell him how competitive be on Sunday,
He's fine. As long as the mental he's around practice,
I don't need. Matter of fact, I need the other
two guys carrying most of the practice running the ball.
(24:50):
I think that Joe Mixon has a pretty good idea
what the zone read is and how to be patient runner.
And I'd rather do you think I want him stepping
on my right guard's ankle on a cutback run and
hurt it. Not that I want the other guys, but
Joe's the guy, those big backs of all the players.
It's those guys you're talking about, and when I talked
about easily, those guys who are mixing it up. I
don't need my running back to practice four days during
(25:12):
the week.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
I need him healthy for Sunday.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
Well, it's it's a story to h I listened to
Busting with the Boys. Yeah, they're hilarious and uh Lawan
was telling a story about when he played with Julio
Jones in Tennessee and he, you know, in the training room,
not going to day.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
No, I don't do this here. I do it on Sundays.
Speaker 5 (25:30):
He goes, oh, he's still that guy, right, you know,
And and when they are that, it's a great one
because when they are that guy, you don't argue. If
it's a second year guy, like, get your ass up
and get out in the practice. You need the mental work.
But once a guy's got the game plan locked in,
which mixing does. The same verbige that slow accuses comes
from Zach Taylor for the most part, because they're in
that McVeigh Shanahan trade. Right, Kevin O'Connell, Why do you
(25:51):
think they got cam acors in Minnesota? Same thing. He
don't have to learn new verbiage. So you're right, Julio,
just give you a break. Well, you're talking practice, but
they I don't need. I didn't need. If Gary Zimmerman,
who practice anyway, was hurt as a Hall of Fame
left tackle, you know it's okay, Gary, I think we're
gonna be okay on Son, I need you there practice field.
(26:12):
All Americans are fine as long as they're Sunday all
Americans do. Give me the Sunday guy, right, and the
Derrick Henrys and if Joe Mixon or some of these guys,
I don't need like a strong safety and a running
back two bodies that are t'm tire alignment.
Speaker 1 (26:25):
They're killing it.
Speaker 5 (26:26):
You think you needed Ray Lewis to practice every day
in Baltimore, be around to coach it up and listen
to the metal side. But I'm talking about physically do that.
Joe Mixon doesn't need to carry the ball one more
time and practice for my money for the rest of
the season. He gets enough of it on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
And that's why Eric Parsigen told Rudy Rudiger, Hey, look,
I wish you know half my players had your heart.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
J T. O'Hara.
Speaker 4 (26:44):
If you had half the heart that Rudiger has, yeah,
you'd be an All American.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
Gotta have Rudiger's. As it stands now, you're now on
the prep team. Get out of here. You know who
O'Hara was.
Speaker 5 (26:54):
Who is Vince Vaughan, Oh that's right, Yeah, a young
Vince Vaughn. And this you got to run to get
rand Ven in this.
Speaker 4 (27:02):
You know what thinks it's the super Bowl. Yeah, there
you goes the football at him.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
Great movie. Yeah, then you get Mateias kind of sticking
up for him.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Yeah, it never gets old. Does I love it that
Vince Vaughan he was, Yeah, he was. Jt Ohara love it.
And then at the end he became the good guy. Yeah,
come on, we gotta play.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Him right, and we're rooting on Rudy Rudiger. But a
good guy.
Speaker 4 (27:20):
I met him in person. He's a good guy. He
got great stories to tell you. I remember I saw
his nephew play years ago. His nephew played baseball at
Arizona State. Oh really, And I was in Omaha and
it used to be one of those you know, they'd
show the crowd and they showed and they showed, Hey
there's Rudy Rudiger and everybody out and the crowd started.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Chating Rudy Rudy.
Speaker 5 (27:36):
And why wouldn't you No, Absolutely, you have classic Speaking
of those injuries, getting back to you talked about it
that list depending on who's going to go and who's not.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Disadvanced.
Speaker 5 (27:46):
I mean, if the linebackers are, you're gonna see a
lot of play action out of Green Bay this week.
You were thin at that spot already, You're gonna see
a lot of play action because also what play action
is gonna do if you run the ball effectively early,
is they with all the pressures that they dial up
and that the edge rushers are getting, You're gonna do
everything you can to make sure running stretch play and
running inside zone at them that Will Anderson and Danil
(28:10):
Hunter don't get to put their white knuckle their three
point stancer stand up and just take b line at
the quarterback. And Jordan loves the threat on the edge
when he breaks breaks contained. This is going to be
this a hell of a matchup.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
Well, Josh Jacobs is a huge part of that as well,
and Damiko Ryan's actually talked about what Josh Jacobs means
for this match up.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
Yesterday.
Speaker 9 (28:30):
What an exciting day for Damien, right, I think everybody's
fired up to see him, you know, get the big run,
the explosive run. It shows the work that Damien is
put in. It's just showing that that clip there in
the team meeting. Everybody's going crazy with Damien and how
physical that run was right for him to break through
the line and also to break two tackles and the
(28:50):
speed to finish the run. It was just, man, I'm
happy for Damien and proud of him for the work
that he's put in while he's been out with injury.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
But he showed up.
Speaker 9 (29:00):
They showed that he was ready to go, and he
made a made an outstand and play for our team
and a play to help us, you know, win that game.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
All right, full disclosure, we wanted Demiko on Josh Jacobs.
We'll get that free a little bit later on, but
nod after the break, I want to tell us, let's
let's do it.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
After we're talking.
Speaker 5 (29:16):
About Pierce, who apparently who's catching on to this zone
scheme and hens why they felt they could move dari
and that they could move cam Akers because he's getting
better at understanding when that.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
Touchdown run that Damian Pierce said last week burst it
looked like a guy that used to wear number twenty
three here.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
Yeah, and that's the truth. So and that if you
can compare them to that guy, life's good. In the
back of it, it feels like they in the meeting
rooms and stuff. Pierce has taken elevated and it is
starting to understand what they're trying to get accomplished, or
can they wouldn't have traded camp Makers, they wouldn't have
so and has done a great job of being versative
for them. Who is the Texans version of Maurice orban Right?
(29:55):
Somebody pointed that out the other day and I said,
that's perfect. He's a yes, and he does it all
and doesn't complain and gives you some good gives you
good minutes off the bench.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Does that make sense?
Speaker 7 (30:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (30:03):
You need those, no doubt real quick about this, Josh Jacobs,
you're gonna play. There are guys that are hammers in
the league, Henry. We got one here and a hammer
that's not just a hammer part of the time that
they get better as they get going. And I think
one of the core losses the Raiders is not having
that guy, and we think who you got to stop
(30:23):
when you play them? Oh, Jordan love right. The pat
this defense this week, I can guarantee you is going
in knowing they have to con I haven't heard the clip,
but I'll be shocked if they're not talking about the
physicality and the burst and the hammer that Josh Jacobs brings.
You got to defend that first, because if you don't
and you decide to play soft and just get after
(30:44):
the quarterback Josh Jacobs will have a field.
Speaker 4 (30:46):
Day off the top coming up next. You're gonna hear that.
You're also gonna hear C. J. Stroud talking up his
own guys in terms of the matchup on the ground
on Sunday in in Green Bay. We'll do that on
the other side, Roger John, I see you guys there
on the phone lines. Get to you on the other
side as well. This is Sean Salisbury Show Sports Talk seven.

Hello Haters from LA to New York. Parker up and
kiss hour. Ask astros, Oh, by goodness, this is Sports
Talk seven ninety Home of Your Astros twenty seventeen. Cheps
doubt about it? Sehn Salisbury show continues right now?
Speaker 1 (33:10):
Maybe the nighthol time.
Speaker 4 (33:11):
I mean, you know you got Freddie Freeman playing through
the ankle right now, you got uh Anthony Rizzo.
Speaker 5 (33:15):
Yeah, I might, we might stick him with a look.
You know, I don't. I'm a game time decision.
Speaker 4 (33:20):
There's there's even some who wonder, speaking of Anthony Rizzo,
if you know, things don't work out where your third
baseman doesn't wear number two anymore with Bregman on the
back of the jersey. I was wonders if Anthony Rizzo
could be part of this clubhouse next year.
Speaker 5 (33:33):
Being first playing first base. Yeah, you go a lot worse.
Sure he could, Sure he could. He's still when healthy.
He's still really good.
Speaker 4 (33:44):
No, he's outsteeming defensively great. Great clubhouse guy.
Speaker 5 (33:47):
I was gonna say, he's a really good culture in
the fit in guy, So that'd be huge.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
That'd be nice. Brian will maybe moving down.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
And he's and he saw also an LSU fan, so
that that definitely helps. So when you know, when La
Shoe guy goes out, you get how about keep one
and bring the other. I would love both, Yeah, me
and you both, man, that'd be would be nice. Little
bit more purple and gold in the clubhouse, will get nice.
Speaker 5 (34:09):
There you go. How much purple and gold we got
in this building? Here we got We've got Christmas party,
it's purple and gold. We we've got more. We've got
more than enough to spare. Yeah, damn right, we do.
We're deep here.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
If if minute made park ever called, we've got we've
We've got your purple and gold.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
No, we got we got you for.
Speaker 5 (34:26):
You, no doubt about.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
So I don't know. I'm gonna have probably have him
bunt tomorrow. Okay, I don't know.
Speaker 5 (34:30):
Even if the bases are packed, we just haven't laid
one down. Take a hack, yeah, warning warning tack power
if you're if you're out there, you're playing. If if
you're if you're out there, you're good enough to go.
I'm going to keep him right in the middle of
the run producing line and let him drive it. He's
at a gap to gap guy, that's it. He'll be back.
Just like I said. He got to get his legs
under it. What do we call it his sea legs? Well,
(34:51):
I mean, you know, you know what he is. He's
he's he's ed reading the tunnel. Don't ask me if
I'm hurt. Yeah, he's you know, we call those guys gamers.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
Yeah, Ed Reed all the way through his career, he
was that guy. Roger, like I said, get to you
here in just a second. But did tease the Damiko
Ryans talking about Josh Jacobs Sam he's tough.
Speaker 9 (35:13):
I think it's been a nice addition for them. I
know Matt wants to run the football. That's where they
want to thrive, that's where they want to live. First
things first, they want to establish a run game and
run it as much as they can. And so with Jacobs,
he's a strong, powerful runner, great contact balance. You know,
one guy doesn't take him down a lot. So it
has to be a collective effort from our defense or
(35:36):
backside guys, everybody getting off of blocks, closing, and we
have to swarm and corral Jacobs because he's such a
tough runner.
Speaker 4 (35:44):
I mean, you talked about Derrick Henry earlier. Funny enough
to former Alabama guys Josh Jacobs showing to be that
guy in the league. It's funny too. You know how
guys coming out of that program. For the longest time,
that was a program that was known for go with
one guy, stick with him and he can go. The
only other time that really before you got to the
later stages of Nick Saban's time with how he handled
(36:06):
running backs was probably Ingram and also Trent Richardson. But
then after he didn't have mark Ingram there anymore. It
was all Trent Richardson. And then once he got to
the league you found out, Oh yeah, this guy's already
got a lot of miles.
Speaker 5 (36:21):
Oh yeah, they will remember down the stretch in Henry's
last year, it was like three weeks and a really
carried at forty forty five forty four time, made like
one hundred carries in three weeks.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
He's also built like a mountain well.
Speaker 5 (36:33):
And he's still going. Yeah, and he's still going. And
right now is if you had an offensive Player of
the Year, it's him. And he's got to be in
the MVP.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Talk.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
The way he's playing. Derrick Henry and Josh Jacobs may
not have the same thought, but he he's not running
away from you, I assure you now. He may run
away from the secondary.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
But he is. He will look you up.
Speaker 5 (36:51):
If you decide that you're not going to tackle well
this week, you're gonna have some chin on you. You're gonna
have some the crown of your helmet chin right on
your chin. It's gonna he will thump you, and you better.
You better bring it, and you better get your ass
sitting down a little bit and get off your heel
because he said he's a thumper man.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
Kind of reminds me years ago when Connor Barwin was here.
I asked him about trying to tackle MJD. Maurice Jones
Drew and he said he remembers the first time he
hit him, and he used an export of obviously to
describe how it felt. But he goes, he hit me
about as much as I hit.
Speaker 5 (37:21):
Him, all right, And those guys delivered. They don't. If
it's you, them and the sideline, you better be prepared.
They're sure not. And the similarities in the four guys
we're talking about love Jacob's mixing stroud young quarterbacks with game.
They can carry you for a long time. They can
(37:41):
make every throw. They can both buy time with their legs,
and that superstardom is in front of them. If this
scent continues and you got backs. Both can handle thirty
touches a game. Both get better as it goes on
because they're there to hit you, hit you where you out.
And then the one time you decided to make an
(38:02):
arm tackle, it's for forty. And those similarities, and if
Nico Collins was here, this is a better receiving group,
but two receiving groups that can get vertical and threatened.
So there's some similarities on both these football teams on
the offensive side of the ball. And this I actually
think the Packers may be the most complete.
Speaker 1 (38:21):
Have they played Baltimore yet?
Speaker 5 (38:23):
Who the Texans open with against Colts and they see
they beat the Colts, They beat Chicago, they beat Jacksonville,
lost to Minnesota in New England, and the games in
Buffalo and Buffalo. This is the most complete team they've played. Now,
I'm not saying they're better in Buffalo because Josh Allen's
been carrying them. You saw what they did against the Jets.
They're playing good football. But it's a complete team in
(38:44):
my opinion, it's the one they're getting ready to play
Sunday well.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
And then also too, I mean, you talked about not
having Nico Collins, you talked about what Joe Mixon means.
We saw what Damian piercemitht last week. You were talking
about c J Stroud, confidence, everything of the sort right there.
CJ is saying yesterday it's mixing and it's pierced. They
give him a lot of confidence and you got the
my bad, let's go.
Speaker 10 (39:07):
When Stephan Joe came here, they were just like, man,
you got it, bro, Like you just you had what
it takes, because I mean, we've been around it, you know,
these past couple of years, being around Borrow and Josh Allen,
so you know, and they're not comparing me to those guys,
I don't think, but you know, they're just telling me
like I have that or I have that that way
I carry myself, you know, and I s I thought
(39:29):
that was pretty cool because I never really heard that before,
especially with two guys who've been around some some really
successful quarterbacks. So I thought that was pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
Very cool.
Speaker 4 (39:38):
Steph Diggs of course was the other player along with
Joe Mixon.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
But yeah, I mean telling him right there.
Speaker 5 (39:43):
Something These guys saw the quarterbacks in their in their
infancy and they said, no, he didn't eat here.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
But it's good to hear it well, And that's.
Speaker 4 (39:50):
It's one of those things if you're sure of yourself,
which I think we can all agree c. J. Stroud is,
it's still nice to hear people say, hey, you're still
that guy.
Speaker 5 (39:56):
And you also want the listen. We all want it.
He didn't needed to be successful. We want the approval
of veterans from your peers.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
Josh.
Speaker 5 (40:03):
Yeah, we get Josh Allen's with Kirk Cousins who put
up I mean, uh, Steph Diggs with Cousins put up
a bunch of numbers, and with Josh Allen, quarterbacks comes
here putting them in that.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Yeah, that's that's a special fan.
Speaker 5 (40:14):
And then you got a thumper who's been around Joe Burrow,
and we know what Joe's done in his career and
he comes in and says, you're you're that guy basically,
and that's so regardless knowing that they feel that way
about you, it's important. You want your teammates listen a fan.
You want the fans respect with somebody who doesn't know you.
You don't know what they're thinking about you, but you
want those guys in the locker room to say, no
matter what happens, Seven's got us and I think it's
(40:35):
and I think seven believes it. No matter what happens,
I turn in hand at the big fellow, we got
a chance to win every time that guy works. Yeah,
and that's that's what That's what you want to hear
from your your teammates, your co workers, everybody of the sort.
Speaker 4 (40:46):
You want that approval. All right, coming up next, Roger,
I see you right there. You want to join Roger
and Jeff, you can do so seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Once again that sebon one
three two one two five seven ninety our one in
the books. Too much fun to be had, much more
to be had For the next three hours. Dan Matthews

Speaker 6 (41:09):
At hd TW Houston.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
I heard radio station and the rocket is Sports Talk
seven ninety your home for your home. Jens Salisbury, Old Salisbury, Houston.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Okay, let's do this.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
Sewn Salisbury, The to usc Truth, longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
Bryan Lima, go Lobos. This is the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 1 (41:44):
Yeah, it was on the he's on the port is
he in the Porties day to day? Day to day?
Speaker 5 (41:49):
We thought about renegging his scholarship. Oh okay, just taking
it away from him because he keeps asking me from
he keeps asking me for more n I L money, tripley.
He said, sew man, the show's going, Greg, can I
get some more n I L? That's you know, like, man, dude,
I mean you heard what. You heard what you might
have to go get me another five stars? But you
heard what Mike Gundy said. Oh, there is no negotiating
now we're we're playing. Yeah, well we'll do that in
(42:11):
December exactly right, We're gonna we're in season. So I mean,
I you know, I'm trying to keep them focused. Triple E.
I mean, do we got another five star in the
recruiting base? We got one coming down to Pike. Don't
we do we got mean, can we send them?
Speaker 1 (42:25):
Do we send them?
Speaker 5 (42:25):
Leave it of the portal? Now you know what, I'm
gonna make the decision. First of all, it's great to
have you come in. It's one of those guys says
you're the arch Manning. Now you come here, you arch man,
your archman. Take it you're arch Manning.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
Great. Got I've got Dad in the stands the goofy hat.
Speaker 5 (42:40):
We already know that if we play you that we're
we're winning championships. I got a guy in Lilima who's
a championship guy. I can't let her. He's my guy,
right been my guy, and he's you know, he's been
with me. Is like Belichick and say he just he's
you see what I just compared me to leave it
to Belichick and Savid, no, wait what just sounded good though,
But he's my guy. So I think I'm gonna just in.
(43:00):
I'm gonna I'm gonna insert him back in the lineup.
But we were grateful that we have a guy coming
to throw for three fifty.
Speaker 4 (43:05):
And speaking of Cooper, Manning wearing the speedy Gonzales hat
up and stands at Red River there's certain you know,
body types that that you know you can you can
wear certain things like you know, for big guys, we
look forward to being able to put on you know,
but to Hawaiian shirt, I was gonna say, yeah, you
want to be tucked. Yeah, you want especially untucked. Yeah
(43:27):
you got you gotta make sure because it's funny. One
of our coworkers here, I showed up one day when
I when I was a little heavier, and I had
the shirt tucked in because I was somewhere.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
He goes, don't tuck it in. You got a guy
can't can't have.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
But then but when you wear it, well like that
you chose Kayle, It's like, I'll tuck it in. Yeah,
however you want see. I believe Andy Reid looks you know,
he's big fella. Yeah, and Andy Reid. I think Andy
probably is a I think he's got to be a
Tommy Bahama untucked guy.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
The leisure wear.
Speaker 5 (43:56):
He's a kind of they should have him as an endorsement.
He feels like Tommy. I'm gonna say that fishing shirts, yeah,
like especially the warmer months.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
Yeah you want to go that route. I think that's
that's him. So and we'll leave it.
Speaker 5 (44:08):
You know, he's a he's a joggers guy. Yeah, you know,
joggers guy. So we keep him in the you know,
easy to get an nil deal, you know, in the collector.
We got so we got him. He'll be back tomorrow
and uh we love him. We kid. We're not letting
get into the portal. Matter of fact, if here triple
he ever tried to get into the portal, I'll just
call up my uh uh, what's his name, Tommy Tuto's, yeah,
(44:32):
and uh, he'll he'll show up, but he'll he'll tell
them bring a shovel and don't tell anybody where you're going.
Polly walled Polly Walnuts will tell hey, Brian and Tripley,
grab yourself a shovel. We'll pick you up. It'll be
a dark sedan. And guess what, don't tell anybody where
you're going. Well, if they try to get in the portal,
they make dead.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
Make sure, make sure, make sure they're not a maid guy.
Though Tommy DeVito found out the wrong way. You know,
you kill Billy Batsy. He's a made guy. There's nothing
you can do about it. And you step in the room,
you look at the fish and and then oh no.
Speaker 1 (45:01):
Yep exactly.
Speaker 5 (45:01):
And I also you know I'll be at the at
my uh office at the dry cleaning. We'll be doing
some dry cleaning right at the dry cleaner. Yeah, and
just I'll just do you know, they don't want Tommy
Toute's or Billy Joe one thumb. That would be the
country version of Billy Joe, you know, add the middle name.
Speaker 1 (45:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (45:18):
But if all of a sudden Poully Walnut shows up
and they try to get in the portal, it won't
end well for him.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
At that point. It's too late, exactly.
Speaker 5 (45:26):
Say that. Once you decide, Once you decide that if
Pauli just shows up, even if you try to retract
the well, we don't want to go on the portals.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
It's it's too late.
Speaker 4 (45:35):
Well, you don't want to be Jimmy Conway at the
payphone yo on the street corner. That's it. It really
got the gym. Yeah, there's no doubt about it. It
was Tony Cisoro too, of all people that did it
to Tommy. I mean he meant more to Henry than
he did to Tommy, although he did introduce the two.
Speaker 5 (45:51):
Now and now you're said, if people aren't movie goers
or watching. You're like, if you if you don't know,
you don't. If you don't know, you don't know. And
should that's it?
Speaker 1 (45:59):
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (45:59):
I can't. I can't help you at that point. The
guy we're talking about, Alma would know because he never
seen any.
Speaker 1 (46:04):
Of those movies. That's disappointing. We're gonna fix it, though, Roger.
Speaker 4 (46:06):
On the Northwest Side, he knows he wants to wait
in here on Sports Talk seven ninety Roger, appreciate your patience, buddy.
Speaker 1 (46:12):
What's up?
Speaker 11 (46:13):
Good morning, guys looking to show Dan shot and a
guy on.
Speaker 12 (46:18):
The wheels of steel, missartripul League, Hey, so real quick.
Speaker 11 (46:21):
I I love my Rockets team if you know that
to write or die with them, you know, I just
saw an article yesterday and that kind of just put me
over the top with this Rockets fan base, and it's
getting they're getting just about as delusional as a Cowboys
fan base, and I really hate to see that. You
got a guy who absolutely has a futured hatred for money. Obviously,
(46:42):
they put three grand and some change on the Rockets
to win the championship this year, and that's all well
and good, and maybe they can't catch lightning in a bottle.
Speaker 12 (46:50):
Who knows.
Speaker 11 (46:50):
But what I'm saying is this tan base has gotta
stop gragging the cart before the horse. It's embarrassing. And
you know, and I think I know what I'm talking
about because forever for every dream, dregs are hardening my
Grady's walk through his door. You know, I've had to
put up with the Day Finals and Buck Johnson's and
you know the Granny Waiters and all these other cats
that came through here that would work a damn and
(47:12):
you know it's it's nice.
Speaker 1 (47:13):
Did you did you just play the Grandville Waiters card?
Speaker 12 (47:19):
Here's so, here's the deal, and here's the deal.
Speaker 11 (47:22):
I just wish that these young and I know it's
a younger generation that's doing this, and you know, we're
about to find out what that with that jailing green
with the Jaien grists, which is really about this and
make a break season for this guy and if he does,
you know, elevate his game to where the potential and
that's you know, potential has been uh you know, taking
people had a lot of money for potential in the
(47:43):
sports world. So uh, I really hope that it does
happen like that, and we do get there. But you know,
this team, to me, like just a few more leaders
on this group. I really think Cam Cam Whitmore can
be that guy. And I really think Rich Shepherd can
be a guy like that. And you just can't rely
on Adoka and and Van Fleet and Jeff Green to
do all the head of lifting in that regard.
Speaker 12 (48:04):
So I just really hope that it really happens.
Speaker 11 (48:07):
But I just think it's crazy worthy when I see
articles like this, and and I just you know, it's
kind of embarrassing.
Speaker 5 (48:13):
I gotta I gotta look. I did not I did
not see the article, but I will read it now. Roger,
do you think they're a playoff team?
Speaker 11 (48:20):
I really hope so. And you know that's what I'm saying.
I don't know if they are, and how how can And.
Speaker 13 (48:26):
I would like to ride the high books like everybody else,
but I really can't say. I hope they know they
get enough talent to be But that's how Gallard of
the Western Conference come on. That's not an easy task,
talking about coming from the west from the east should
be it's easier.
Speaker 12 (48:40):
But I really don't know.
Speaker 4 (48:42):
I hope and Roger, Roger maybe You're hearing from different people,
But I mean it sounds like from people I talk
with the organization. More than anything, it's just belief in
terms of having these guys together, getting guys back from
last year. You add Steven Adams, uh, you get Tarry
Easton hopefully healthy this year. I mean, that's what I'm
hearing it from. I mean, but I don't know. I'm
in the same boat with Sean. I don't know what
(49:04):
article you're talking about, but at least I'm not necessarily
hearing a ton of people like hyping up without any
real expectation. I mean, are you mostly just going off
of that? And then you know, also some guy out
there in Vegas.
Speaker 1 (49:17):
Putting down some money.
Speaker 11 (49:18):
I just read the I just read the comments and
stuff like that, and I just I just think it's silly.
I just I just think it's it's really premature to
be you know, you know, get to a get to
a conference championship, and that's with ady team that can
be with the Texas are I just I just really
want them to.
Speaker 12 (49:34):
Have that natural progression and then yeah, let's move forward.
Speaker 11 (49:37):
I just I just think it's a little embarrassing. But
you know, I'm a old school kind of guy. So
that's just me roder, right, guys.
Speaker 1 (49:45):
I mean I think that it's it's not even you know,
I think you should have some optimism.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
I do. I mean, I'm talking about the city belief
NBA championship. It's not they're not ready for that yet.
But here's the thing, and we can carry this over
on to the other side. I mean, there's a difference
between having belief and hope.
Speaker 4 (50:00):
Last year, they hoped that they could actually have a
good season, and by their standards at least for what
they had for the first couple of years with a
bunch of young guys, there was hope because you doubled
what you had done those years.
Speaker 5 (50:10):
Yeah, think about it like we'll kind of think about
the Texans three wins to ten wins. Yeah, in the
NBA going from mid twenties to forty two forty one
wins last year. What was our expectation for the Texans
last year? Our expectation seven to eight wins. Get better,
so playing meaningful football games in November and December correctly,
So then once we got to that point as to
(50:30):
be able to get to the playoffs. Even tho they
can't be five hundred, then yeah, you adjusted your expectations
a little bit because you were like, hey, you're there,
so you might as well do it. And now look,
with ten wins, the expectations now are no longer just
win the division. It's to be playing in February and.
Speaker 1 (50:43):
Get out a divisional round weekend. There's no question.
Speaker 5 (50:46):
And further with the Rockets, if they have the same
ascent and quantum leap that they went from last year
the year before to last year to get them five hundred,
give us five more wins and they're in the hunt.
Dude's there.
Speaker 4 (51:00):
And it's also too I mean, you know you don't
you don't factor in that. Is there a move made
at the deadline last year where they say, hey, this
is the move that carries us over to the next
step in terms of this rebuild and the next level
of maturity.
Speaker 5 (51:12):
And they get a thumper and at it where you
get a guy who can bang and create some of
the intimidation of physicality. It's all going to come down.
I know they can score. I know that they can that.
Their their athleticism is through the roof, and they've got
great leadership and U Dooka can coach the buy in
on the defensive end consistently will be the difference they'll
(51:32):
knock down.
Speaker 1 (51:33):
They'll have games they don't see.
Speaker 5 (51:34):
You've got to be able to win games when you're
not shooting well on the other end, or get into
the rim or getting to the free throw line. So
on those it's like a quarterback who plays poorly still
finds a way to keep you in the game and win.
Speaker 1 (51:44):
Garrett Smider, that's exactly right.
Speaker 5 (51:46):
Seem and make big plays when it matters the most
and show big balls, which he did continually. So in
this one, can you win games when you're not scoring
and you get to that point where you knock out?
And we won ninety four ninety two because and we
shot twenty seven percent. But on the defensive end, we've
played we played them the way they played us, and
we found a way to win. That's where you That's
(52:07):
when I when I look say, Sean, what's what do
they look like on the defensive end when things aren't
when they're not scoring, And if that's the commitment they
get on that end, I do believe the Rockets can.
Speaker 4 (52:16):
Be one of those possible playing teams lot that you
on there will carry it over to the other side.
You want to weigh in, do so seven one three, two,
one two five, seven ninety. Plenty of Texans still to
get to as well as they get ready for the
Green Bay Packers this weekend.
Speaker 1 (52:29):
We'll do all of that with you till ten.
Speaker 5 (52:31):
Right here, Sean Salisbury Show, Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 8 (52:35):
You both proudly and broadcasting from the most hated city
in baseball, Houston rides with the Shawn Salisbury Show.
Speaker 3 (52:47):
On Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (52:53):
All right, Sean, what are you hearing out there now?
Speaker 3 (52:56):
The Salisbury's takeout Salisbury on the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 4 (53:04):
Yeah what voice guy just said, It's not wrong and
it's going to play out even more like so, I
asked this question last night, Sean, and I even threw
out a hashtag on Twitter because the Dodgers are now
up to one in their series over the Mets, and
the Yankees up to ohero in their series against Cleveland
(53:25):
and the LCS on the al side.
Speaker 1 (53:27):
N L side hasn't had a close game yet.
Speaker 4 (53:29):
It's not had a close game yet, and hopefully maybe
the Grimace can can can pull him over the top
tonight and the Mets can even it up, but it's
looking like the Dodgers probably are on their way, which,
by the way.
Speaker 5 (53:40):
Have seventy plus percent of the time you win game three,
you win the series.
Speaker 4 (53:43):
It's I mean, game three and game five are usually
the momentum turners. And we saw that in the World Series.
And funny enough, who won the World Series that year?
Despite what many people out in La and you know
your LA City council, Oh, we recognize the Dodgers as
the world champions.
Speaker 2 (54:00):
I won.
Speaker 4 (54:00):
Don't you worry about cleaning up your own city and
other things that actually matter? As a post A lot longer,
I was gonna say, yeah, that's it's probably much more
than anyway.
Speaker 1 (54:07):
We're getting buried in the weeds here.
Speaker 4 (54:09):
But the hashtag I threw out last night was hashtag
shot or stabbed, because because I feel like as an
Astros fan, that's kind of the your fate is not
good because you're no longer in it. But it's coming
down to if you have to choose between the two,
would you rather be shot or would you rather be stabbed?
In terms of are you rooting for the Dodgers are
(54:31):
you rooting for the Yankees?
Speaker 5 (54:34):
This is easy for me, being an sc guy who's
two of my very close close friends played for the
Dodgers and those world serious teams, Marshall and Sacks, and
we were in each was in Mike's wedding. He and
I were The reason I say that is I rooted
from listen to Vince Cully forever. It's not even and
I as a as a lifelong diehard Socks fan, m h,
it's easy. I mean, I respect the Yankees. I would
(54:57):
have wanted Derek Jeter on my team I love. I mean,
now for my viewing pleasure, I want the Yankees and
the Dodgers in it because it is that's that's old
school baseball, blue blood baseball. That's why. Yet for that reason, yeah,
I've been rooting for Cleveland for a while because I
love their grind. I do.
Speaker 1 (55:14):
It would be awesome.
Speaker 5 (55:15):
TV doesn't want it, but for just your viewing pleasure,
even if you hate him more like them, that's the
intensity of a series you want. Yet, the Mets and
the Yankees TV would love that. What they don't want.
They don't want Cleveland in a television Baseball doesn't. I
don't mean that a negative way, and those fans deserve it.
After what they have to endure football wise. But yeah,
for choosing Dodgers the Yankees, which one is established? I'm
(55:36):
taking the Give me the Dodgers over the Yankees all day,
every day, twice on Sunday. Even though I respect the Yankees,
I think I did their players. I'm not one of
those guys at well, would you want a Yankee? Yeah,
I'll take Judge and I'll take some of those guys
Juan Soto.
Speaker 1 (55:52):
But I got to give me the Dodgers all day
in that series.
Speaker 4 (55:55):
And this is, I mean the Major League Baseball version
of the old you know, Lakers Celtics.
Speaker 1 (56:00):
I mean you got that.
Speaker 4 (56:01):
I mean, I'm sure that the NBA, if you ever
asked them what would be your ideal NBA Finals, they
would say the Knicks and the Lakers. That would be
the one. If they got that, they would like or Celtics.
They'd be doing backflips.
Speaker 5 (56:11):
I mean, you wouldn't choose anybody else on the West
and old school.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
And it'd be the same deal for the NFL. Who
who do you want?
Speaker 4 (56:17):
They want the Packer, Well, I mean Packers wouldn't be bad,
but they would want the Cowboys and the Steelers.
Speaker 5 (56:23):
Right, they'd love that and even throw in the Giants
because of media market. But all the Cowboys, Jerry's America's team.
That's not what we may want. We made maybe a
while before we see those, but that's what they I would.
Speaker 4 (56:35):
Count on the Steelers much more than I'd count on
with Jerry still being there. We're gonna get into that
actually a little bit later on because I hadn't had
a chance to weigh in on that. But no, with
the Dodgers, you know what they kind of remind me of.
They remind me of like that like really prep school
team that you couldn't stand when you were in high school.
Like I'm at Saint Thomas and we you know, we
(56:56):
thought that, you know, all the Jesuit guys they were soft.
They never been pun in the face any of those things.
Neither are we for that matter. But that I mean
the Dodgers, there is a ton of players on that
team that honestly, they need a good They need a
good Yeah, they need they need a little good serving
of it. I think there's certain guys that, especially the
(57:17):
way that they continue to act like I mean, you
had Clayton Kershaw being asked about, you know, coming back
to minute made Parko sow those rings out there.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
It's been almost ten years, Clayton, get past it, dude.
Speaker 4 (57:29):
And you want to you want to know why you
haven't been back to that point because you're still thinking
about them, You're still worried about what they're doing.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
This is astro. It's a great thing. If you're an astro.
Love it. So I ask you, so your Yankees over Dodgers.
Speaker 4 (57:43):
Oh yeah, I'm absently that's over I mean, that's over Yankee,
that's over all of them, because I mean, the funny
thing is and that's the weird thing. We got into
this a little bit last night on the Night and.
Speaker 5 (57:52):
Mets are a likable team because they're incredibly likable, which
is never the way.
Speaker 1 (57:55):
That they are. Right the AG six team, they were irreprehensible.
You hated them.
Speaker 5 (58:00):
They were Terribojo and Hernandez in that group you're talking.
I mean, you know, they just attagonize the hell out
of you too, antagonized and played good baseball, which drove Ray.
Speaker 1 (58:12):
They drove people crazy.
Speaker 4 (58:13):
They're a team. If you're a fan of them, I
love them. But obviously if you play against them, there
are a bunch of agitators. There are a bunch of
guys you can't stand. I mean, look, the Astros have
been that for the longest time. And the unfortunate thing is,
I dude, what that guy is.
Speaker 5 (58:28):
Oh they just in hojo, the whole the whole group
of them. But they were good man, There there was
a there was Cleveland's both there.
Speaker 4 (58:35):
There was a buddy of mine who used to have
a line about somebody that if they were an a
you know what, he would call them a supreme a
you know what. And I think Wally Backman when her bill.
Absolutely yeah, they they fit that bill. But no, this
Dodgers team, there's there's no Steve Garvey's on this team.
There's no any of those guys that that Tommy little
sort of mister Dodger himself. I mean, you got Max
(58:56):
Mounsey last night, they're up seven to nothing, and look
it was a nice home run.
Speaker 1 (58:59):
It was a good one.
Speaker 4 (59:00):
But dude, like, if you want to try to be
one of the arbiters of the game in terms of oh,
well we didn't like what they did, and try to
be you know, the moral high horse of you know,
trying to say how, you know, everybody else should play
the game.
Speaker 1 (59:14):
Well, then do it yourself or how they should act.
Speaker 5 (59:16):
Right, Yeah, Oh, there's a there's there's no question the
Dodgers are easy to dislike.
Speaker 4 (59:22):
And the funny thing is, and we brought this up
last night, I actually like Aaron Judge.
Speaker 5 (59:27):
I'm a huge Aaron Judge fan. I think he's a finale.
I think he's a great person.
Speaker 4 (59:31):
And don't worry about disliking gim Carlo Stanton because they
don't like gim Carlo Stanton up there anyway. But I mean,
in terms of everything else, Garrett Cole would it kind
of hurt to see him.
Speaker 1 (59:42):
Judge doesn't bother me at all. I like him.
Speaker 5 (59:44):
Matter of fact. I think he's a I think he's
one of the great faces of the league. And he
just seems like a good I remember I was in
a four game series and but four years ago, five
years agoing Fenaway Park and maybe four years ago, and
it was against the Yankees, sunny and between every inning
and now this is not that big a deal, but
every inning he made sure a Red Sox fan, after
(01:00:06):
warming up in the outfield, had a ball.
Speaker 1 (01:00:08):
He and he treated you know, they boo him and
they but he just was.
Speaker 5 (01:00:11):
He was he was a type of guy like you
know you're getting booed, but you still endear yourself to
the fans. I think Aaron Judge is a hell of
a good guy and a great player.
Speaker 4 (01:00:17):
And the funny thing is I never really understood that.
I mean, you know, I watched it obviously from a
far years ago, but I had a chance in two
thousand and four to go up to Fenway and actually
and got to experience Yankees Red Sox, and I remember
like it that there was a genuine respect for guys
like Jeter and Posada and guy Andy Bard Williams right,
because I mean pettit at time obviously with the Astros,
(01:00:40):
but it was, hey, those guys are Yankees. Now for
the guy playing third base that were number thirteen, they
didn't like him, and clearly Jason Varitek didn't like him either.
Speaker 5 (01:00:49):
He wasn't he I mean, I don't even I know
they do. I still have a hard time considering Alex Rodriguez.
Now they tell you consider Yankee, can consider the source.
I've also said this enough that if enough people say
something about a guy, that it's got to be true.
Like I don't think I've ever heard one positive word
about that guy. And I've never met him in person,
been in the same room as I met him, so
(01:01:10):
I don't know. I do know this though, give me
Jeter over if if I was as a Red Sue,
who I would I take from the dark Side to
the Red Sox. You can give you Jeter, you can
give me Jorge Posada, you give me Aaron Judge. I'll
take those guys over there any day of the week
because their gamer. And you know what, Judge is not
an antagonizer either. He just he plays baseball the right
(01:01:30):
way and he seems like a good and I can
imagine him being just a good dude in public all
the time.
Speaker 4 (01:01:34):
But I've also already said, I mean there's certain National
Baseball writers. The mute on social media is going up
if if indeed we get the World Series that we
think we're gonna get. Yeah, like, I'm not going to
look at it. I'm not going to look at certain
guys that, you know, maybe have the last name McCullough,
maybe have the last name passing. I'm just I'm not
I will get a cavity even seeing it. Do you
(01:01:56):
know what I will do watch every end of all
and hope it goes seven games if there's no football on,
if the fiance doesn't want to watch another episode of
Vampire Diary.
Speaker 1 (01:02:09):
On who the football is, depending on who the football is.
Speaker 4 (01:02:12):
I think we're hitting the Bravo season two, so might
have to watch some Bravo.
Speaker 5 (01:02:15):
You go ahead. I gotta say love mom with you.
You go ahead. I'll be I will watch you. If
it's not a great baseball game, you I'll be tuned. O.
Speaker 4 (01:02:23):
Hey, vander Pump rules needs their love to all right.
Uh Shena, see you're right there, John, See you're right
there as well. Get to you on the other side.
I do want to carry this over because I mean
it does seem like especially too with the hatred for
both fan bases and of course then with us, there
is a lot of emotions at right on that. So
we can continue that conversation on the other side. Dan
Matthews in for Brian Lima. He's Sean Salisbury Triple Emmanuel
(01:02:45):

Speaker 1 (01:02:49):

Speaker 14 (01:02:50):
Let's talk about your total wellness optimization fellas my team
at Men's Tea Clinic celebrating ten years this year. Right here,
in the city of Houston and up in Dallas Fort Worth.
For you, fellas can be caused by your body's gradual
depletion of testosterone from natural as well as environmental factors,
beginning as early as your late twenties. Yes, that's correct,
your late twenties. So if you're listening to me talk

and treating the underlying causes of low TI with their
team of dedicated medical experts that are obsessed with men's

Clinic for a year and a half now and it
completely changed my life. I go to the Spring location
(01:03:34):
and I meet with Sean every single Monday. Over the
last couple of weeks, I've been traveling, so they have
set me up to help with me being gone for
a couple of days here and there, and they always
get me right with my testosterone treatment and my total
wellness optimization plan. It is such an easy procedure. All
you do is you go over there, get a little
(01:03:55):
blood drawn, get your levels checked, and you get the
information back within ten to fifteen minutes, and then you
can start your total wellness optimization plan. The biggest thing
for me was getting over some brain fog, the plateaus
that I was hitting in the gym, and just throughout
the day I felt like I was sleepwalking. My lifts
in the gym were awful. I just did not feel
like myself. Come to find out, I had low testosterone.
So get over to Men's Tea Clinic right now, get
(01:04:16):
your levels checked, and then get on a Total one
is optimization plan. Five area locations The Heights, pair Land, Pasadena,
Cypress in Spring, Dedicated provider's convenient clinic hours, cash and
insurance options makes it easy to get in and get
out and get back to being you. Total one is

Speaker 3 (01:04:49):
I had to live out the Shawn Salisbury show continued.
Speaker 5 (01:04:54):
God see Central California, and they say the.
Speaker 4 (01:04:57):
Same people you tell them you're a fan of a
certain being. I know, what's your favorite album.
Speaker 5 (01:05:01):
I don't have a favorite album because I don't listen
albums anymore. Neither do you the kind of I actually
do have a turntable and get it. But yeah, I
know what you're saying. It's the snob part of it.
Speaker 1 (01:05:13):
But you're right. And I like craft beer too.
Speaker 5 (01:05:16):
But if I'm having a Mexican beer, don't hate because
I didn't get one years your Seattle local. I p
a no. I mean, look, you know I'm a as
you know, I'm a big spindle taps my guys, So
I'm a spindle tay. I drink that about eighty five
ninety percent of the time and they've turned me onto one.
But snob no, because I'll grab myself a nice dose.
Eki's in a medello six ways to Sunday. Matter of fact,
(01:05:38):
I think I'm not drinking. I get, but I'm not
drinking spindle tap or I PA, you give me all
you line up the Mexican beers from one to ten
and the eight of them are my favorite, my favorite beer.
Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
You know, people talk about and she and I see
you're right there, get you here in just a second. Now.
Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
People talk about the best beers out there, game day beer,
airport beer, after you mow the lawn, beer, after golf beer,
all of those one here in the area that I
know that we can all agree on Friday night text
mix beer Friday night. Oh yeah, and in a bottle
you got you got the chips and see and then
(01:06:13):
that bottle. Yeah, I mean, you know, the draft is nice,
but you know if they bring me and and of
course too, uh, the the mug dressed, oh yeah, ten
preferably Yeah, and that mug's cold as could be. Yeah,
and butture changes like eight seconds on the beer. You
got the lime wedge right there.
Speaker 5 (01:06:30):
Make sure you get the poor right yeah, good Mexican beer, brother,
I'm telling you, and I'll tell you speaking of those.
Speaker 1 (01:06:34):
Vibes are elite.
Speaker 5 (01:06:35):
When you get that, I'm gonna I'm gonna say something
you're gonna say. I don't know, Sean, And maybe it's
because it's not a lot of booze in or to
what have you. But old school I call the guzzle beer,
the one where you come in from on the lawn
and you don't want to sip. Yeah, you're sweating shirt off, yeah,
and you and you guzzle it. I'm gonna tell you something,
and it's a true the Champagne of beers. Miller High
(01:06:55):
Life in a bottle. That's the best guzzle beer because
it's not burning your throat going down, you know what
I'm saying. It's and it's like when you're done with it,
you're not feeling like you're, okay, I'm buzzed. You're not
getting buzzed off a Miller High Life. But it goes
down because you know there's a little water in it,
but it goes down so smooth, and you get it
out of it and you don't get out of the
refrigerator cold. This is the Clint Eastwood or the Yetti
(01:07:17):
cooler on your porch stuff at Nice and I do
all the fridge. I still I keep it Yetti cooler
out of my back just for extra extra cold.
Speaker 1 (01:07:25):
And you and it's so.
Speaker 5 (01:07:25):
Cold that you can hear and you twist off the
top and it makes that wish yep, and then you
guzzle that beer. That is the best guzzle beer on
the planet. It's a shamp Old Miller High not anywhere else,
not in a bottle.
Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
I'm talking.
Speaker 4 (01:07:37):
I mean, I'm talking about to you know, college, the
national title of beers that has a light at the end.
You know what I'm talking about. Oh yeah, oh yeah,
oh yeah, I absolutely would. And because it was cheap
and I both know is if you showed up to
a party with the more name brands right there, somebody Oh.
Speaker 5 (01:07:55):
Yeah, mom and dad, Oh yeah, you're on scholarship. Yeah,
there's no you can spare a little bit more with that. Yeah, exactly,
most of us, most of us at SCO scholarship do.
Speaker 1 (01:08:06):
We didn't have anybody, so we were scrabbled around. We
were drinking.
Speaker 5 (01:08:09):
We were drinking tall Magnums or eight ball and that's
and that would get you. We'd go do that in
the springtime, after spring practice was over, you'd go to
like an afternoon move your matt air, just play at
the house. It's nice, warm weather in Los Angeles, exactly
watching McGuire and Randy Johns.
Speaker 1 (01:08:29):
That's honestly God truth.
Speaker 5 (01:08:30):
And we go we drink Magnums or Tall Boys, old
eight ball, some split small liquor because it was inexpensive.
The liquor store was right around the corner and you
could drink. You could order a twelve package for like
five bucks. What a time it was. It was awesome.
It was freaking awesome. And he didn't You didn't care
what it tastes like going down. You were looking for
the effect of cheering. Cheering on the baseball team with
a little buzz. We go watch the Jensen Twins. Do
(01:08:53):
you remember Luke Jensen who played ambidextros. We'd go sit
there in the stands and go crazy watching him serve
one hundred and fifty miles an hour with his left
hand and then the next serve popping it over and
playing ambidextras and doing the exact same thing with his
right hand with the same force. We were like Luke,
and we'd set up there and go crazy, a bunch
of drunk idiots for the football team, drag it like crazy,
(01:09:13):
loving life.
Speaker 1 (01:09:13):
Man, I miss those days. You know what.
Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
It's one of those. You have Doc Brown right in
front of me, the DeLorean. You want to go back
to being eighteen nineteen. Yep, you didn't even get to
the teen of nineteen. Right there, I said, yes, just
for a little while. I like the age I'm at now,
just for a little wi. I don't want to live
there anymore.
Speaker 5 (01:09:30):
But I'll tell you what, take me back there for
just a minute, Tripoly and just.
Speaker 1 (01:09:34):
A minute or one minute or maybe a week. I
was gonna say, can I stay for the party?
Speaker 5 (01:09:39):
All right? A month?
Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
And then the next morning I can? You know, wait hey,
and you double down?
Speaker 4 (01:09:44):
Yeah, damn, it's an awesome dream right there, right brother,
all right, g you, we'll get to you on the
other side. You want to join her and Jeff there,
you can do so seOne three two one two five
seven ninety. Once again that seven one three two one
two five seven ninety. A little nostalgia doesn't hurt anybody,
as that took up our time right here. But we'll
continue the conversation on the other side, Dan Matthews and
for Brian Lima, he Sean Salisbury, Triple Emmanuel Elmore Sports
(01:10:07):
SOX seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:10:10):
Let the celebration start or Sean Salisbury on Sports Talk
seven ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:10:17):
Yeah you got to shoes in that stage, Yeah, you
sure do. Yeah, you have to choose. You can't have both.
Can't be a Yankee and met Fan camp Be in Alabama.
You cannot what is the uh who? What?
Speaker 1 (01:10:26):
What was Mackovic's name in that movie?
Speaker 5 (01:10:28):
Again?
Speaker 4 (01:10:29):
He was Cyrus the Virus? Yeah, who was because remember
it was the guy that was begging for his life?
Was Cyrus the virus?
Speaker 5 (01:10:36):
That's exactly right and killed him? What was uh Danny Tradill? No,
what was uh Trail? It wasn't towreo twenty three? What
was his or thirty two?
Speaker 1 (01:10:47):
I mean yeah, he was sick of Yeah, he was
in that movie. I love Danny Trail.
Speaker 5 (01:10:50):
He got good taco shops too, And that's what I
heard Trails tackles.
Speaker 1 (01:10:53):
He Yonse met him once said he couldn't have been nicer.
Speaker 5 (01:10:55):
What was what was my guy?
Speaker 3 (01:10:57):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:10:57):
Blucemy's name in that movie? Ah? God, I care remember.
Speaker 4 (01:11:00):
Sticks out as Cyrus the Virus? And I remember what
was it Cusack was Larkin? Yeah, he's probably out saving
the rainforest or something.
Speaker 5 (01:11:10):
Yeah. They had a group of they cast that movie
pretty good. It was a good movie. I did underrated.
I like it. Maybe it's properly rated, but I've seen
like four thousand times.
Speaker 4 (01:11:20):
If it's one of those, you know it comes on.
It'll definitely be watched. Even if it's on like one
of the networks with commercials.
Speaker 5 (01:11:26):
And it's around in the background, you're watching it absolutely
for sure, no doubt. Sheena and Sugarland wants to weigh
in here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 7 (01:11:32):
She know what's going on, Good morning, So great music
selection today for first of all, Green Everything, y'all are saying, yeah,
it's great, triple he keep it going so loving ACDC
love that guitar riff, so it's coming on my playlist
and yeah, also agreed that song always makes me think
(01:11:53):
of conn Air every time I hear it. And then uh,
just righte away in on the Yankee the Dodgers conversations.
So we were talking about this actually the other night
at the dinner table. My six year old daughter was asking, well,
you know, Astros are out. She was actually room for
the Padres, they're out.
Speaker 15 (01:12:10):
We were room for the Royals. Then they're out. She's like,
who were room for. I'm like, well, obviously Met's in Cleveland.
She's like, and if they.
Speaker 7 (01:12:17):
Both lose, husband and I just look at each other like,
h like, I guess the Yankees, And.
Speaker 15 (01:12:22):
She looked at us dumbstruck. She was like, you can't
root for the Yankees. They're the evil Empire. You can't
root for them.
Speaker 5 (01:12:29):
See, And so are you? I mean, I'm curious, Shena,
are you? Because they're American League? So if you hate
both teams, would you take the one that you say, well,
let's keep in the American League because that shows that
the American League's the better league? Or why would if
you if they're in the American League and you hate
them both the same? Or do you hate them both
the same?
Speaker 7 (01:12:48):
So there's a few things Dodgers, just the continuing to
be irritatingly butt hurt about twenty seventeen.
Speaker 1 (01:12:57):
And go they can't get over it drives me up
a wall.
Speaker 15 (01:12:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:12:59):
And secondly that they try to, you know, justify themselves
as a good team by the shortened twenty twenty year
that they won, which is an asterisk year.
Speaker 15 (01:13:10):
That doesn't even count.
Speaker 7 (01:13:12):
And I hate the idea that they go and just
buy a team and pay seven hundred million dollars on
Otani and then.
Speaker 15 (01:13:18):
Boom World Series title.
Speaker 7 (01:13:20):
So they spent that money, it's World Series Champions or bust.
Speaker 15 (01:13:25):
I want them a.
Speaker 5 (01:13:25):
Bust, don't you wish that we would go buy spend
seven hundred million too. That'd be kind of cool.
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
But I'm with her. You're you're so right, But what
it be?
Speaker 5 (01:13:37):
And like I said, if we had to pay to
keep Bregman and Tucker and grab another one, I hate it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:42):
What is somebody else do but yours? Like, yeah, you
know what I'm saying.
Speaker 5 (01:13:45):
It's like, man, I wish we had the money to
pay Atani or we do, but we're not going to
pay it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:49):
But you're exactly right. I think that here.
Speaker 5 (01:13:51):
And you know what's even more irritating is that they
constantly talk there there these payrolls are so high, and
they've got one abbreviated title since nineteen eight eight, and
they're still talking that they've won twelve like they're like
they're the they've won three in a row. You make
a great point. And I guess my affinity just because
of friends in the history of me being in Los
Angeles and being there because as a Red Sox guy too,
(01:14:13):
my whole life. You know, damn well, I can't root
for the Yankees. That's it, and I just can't.
Speaker 15 (01:14:18):
That's completely understandable.
Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
I understand that for the Yankees there you go, so
we'll see should be then, you.
Speaker 7 (01:14:24):
Know, also being just completely shoved down our throat Otani
all the time, I mean, getting the eight and forty
eight steals and home runs and then you know the
constant little graphics on the side of the screen to
go watch Otani on this channel Towni's coming up in
this many batters.
Speaker 15 (01:14:40):
I'm so it's like, I like Otan.
Speaker 7 (01:14:42):
He's amazing, Claire, I mean, absolutely amazing, but I am
so sick of.
Speaker 5 (01:14:48):
Him enough the tawny fatigue and the fact that he's
really good is Ian Wigs is like, Okay, maybe Homers.
Speaker 1 (01:14:54):
Yeah, you're right, great point man.
Speaker 5 (01:14:56):
So you guys got your Yankees all the way now
if it's not the mess Cleveland.
Speaker 15 (01:15:00):
Okay, yes, all right, that's correct.
Speaker 5 (01:15:03):
And then I'm just going to piss everybody off on
the Dodgers or Crown Shape.
Speaker 1 (01:15:06):
I'm kidding. I gotta I'm a great one.
Speaker 5 (01:15:09):
Thanks for the appreciate thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:15:12):
And I'm with her on the part because it's what
have we talked about a lot with baseball don't do
enough to promote the individual stars, and I think that
they've gotten better about it.
Speaker 5 (01:15:24):
Right and make sure I called her. She was thinking
because we get so many great callers and I can't
see the collar board today, so I want to make
sure remember, like I said earlier, she loves she and
her kids. They have a lot of conversations at the
table for she's passionate baseball.
Speaker 4 (01:15:40):
But I will I do think that probably it comes
down to this of Astro fans. I do think that
they look at Yankee fans as there are still pockets
that will try to, you know, troll on on social
media all that. But then true Yankee fans that I know,
you know you bring up the Astros in conversation.
Speaker 1 (01:15:57):
Now they respect them. There's a mutual respect.
Speaker 4 (01:15:59):
It's it's a hey, look, don't like what you guys did,
but you've, honestly, ever since then, you've you've handled us
pretty good in the postseason.
Speaker 5 (01:16:07):
Good fans, passionate fans. That's why I don't have a
problem with Philly fans and Yankee fans. There's there's a
clown in every group. Sure, we all have them, but
I like Boston good fan bases. Now, they can be harsh,
but you're right, the ones that know know, and that's
really the only ones you care about. Because if you
let them fan bases drive you crazy opposite fan bases.
(01:16:28):
But in this one, I wonder, even on the third
leg of that you're talking about, are people do they care?
Speaker 1 (01:16:34):
The next week? Do you even care? Are you watching?
Speaker 4 (01:16:37):
Well, it's also too why are you talking about me?
If if we don't matter, why are you still talking
about us? It matters to the Dodgers then it always will.
That's fine, They're gonna have to get over it. And
that's exactly it. I mean, soon enough, you have to,
Like I will say this. I brought up the Clayton
Kershaw example earlier, Kei k Herniandez when he was asked
about it, was just like, I don't care anymore. I've
played them since like it's it's done. It's over with.
Speaker 5 (01:17:01):
Take care of business, right, go take care of business
and you don't have to worry. You don't have to say, well,
we should have won. Now you go take care of
this one in a full season when everybody expected you
to win a World Series, because if they don't, it's
a failure this year because they've they've they've got too
many good players not to just get to the AL
the NLCS and not get to the World Series.
Speaker 4 (01:17:18):
Then here's the thing. Can you do it again? Can
you do it again? Can you do it again? I
mean that's with everything that people might say about the Astros,
you cannot discount what they've done.
Speaker 5 (01:17:27):
It's legendary. The Braves run and their time and the
Astros run. And to cap it off with the World Series,
and when you're disappointed that you didn't make it to
an eighth straight ALCS.
Speaker 4 (01:17:37):
Things are good, you damn right they are. So we'll
get into speaking of the Astros. A former member of
the Astros organization saying some interesting things about his former employer.
Will let you hear that as the show goes along.
And also to speaking of you know, fan bases everything.
This has kind of become a little bit of a
hot discussion since Red River last weekend. Nice little video
(01:18:00):
out there and some people have reacted, so we'll talk
about that too as well.
Speaker 1 (01:18:04):
Two hours down, two more to go.

playing with, so I'm looking forward to it. That's a
that's a fun golf course we've got. And then to
quite a bit here on this show today.
Speaker 4 (01:19:03):
Obviously, even though the Astros aren't in it, there is
still baseball happening. The Dodgers two one lead now in
the NLCS eight nothing win last night over the Mets
in Queen's Game four. Tonight, Yoshiyamamoto against Jose Kintana. Game
three ALCS in Cleveland gets under way. Yankees up two
to oho in the series over the Guardians, Clark Schmidt
(01:19:24):
Matthew Boyd the lefty going for the Guardians. We got
into some Texans as well today. Lengthy injury report for
the Texas.
Speaker 5 (01:19:33):
Big weekend man. This is a complete game. They're going
to have to play. It's tough and a fun place
to go.
Speaker 4 (01:19:38):
This is this is the game that I mean. You know,
we heard early on in the season Demiko Ryan's talking
about Texans or beating the Texans, pre snap penalties, all
those things. The last few weeks, I think we can
agree they've cleaned those up, haven't had those as much.
I think, if I'm not mistaken, the Patriots game was
their least penalized of the season. I mean, you still
had some issues here.
Speaker 1 (01:19:57):
And there, but that's a good thing. That's something they
had to clean up.
Speaker 4 (01:20:00):
I mean, because that well, I mean, and it was
also too, I mean, something that could lose you games.
I mean, I've said at numerous times that you can
win a game now and lose it later. And I
mean they beat the Chicago Bears when the Chicago Bears
were not anywhere close to the football they're playing right now.
You get a little bit better quarterback play out of Caleb.
(01:20:20):
You know, Caleb Williams that night. You're not talking about
a Texans win that night. So you were lucky to
win that one. Same deal with Indianapolis. And I'm not
going to apologize for the win over the Bills wasn't
necessarily perfect, no, but you beat a good playoff team.
I mean that's huge, a team that was in very
much position to be able to represent the AFC last year,
but then they ran into a buzz saw that was
(01:20:41):
called the Chiefs.
Speaker 5 (01:20:42):
And you're the best quarterback they'd faced in Josh Allen.
Your defense played him to the point of to the
tune in nine out of thirty.
Speaker 4 (01:20:49):
You made him look incredibly pedestrians exactly right, and he's nothing.
Speaker 5 (01:20:53):
He's nothing near pedestrian. The guys that play making fool
on the field, but they made him look very pedestrian
and averag and you're hoping you can come out now.
I would imagine there's gonna be more than ten balls
that don't hit the ground that are in the Packers
receivers in back's hands. Jordan loves a good player and
an accurate player, but you'd love to hope that you
could pin him down and make them one dimensional. And
(01:21:15):
they literally made Buffalo one dimensional, and that one dimensions
running it. You know they can run the football and
Josh Allen can run it, but they made a one
dimension We're able to overcome it if you can make
them one dimensional and not let the Josh Jacobs run
game and be balanced to where Jordan loves having his
way and they're still running the football. I don't usually
care about yards. It's more the attempts. If they're running
(01:21:36):
it twenty five, twenty eight, thirty times. When you hit
that thirty times threshold, whoever you are, this team or
the opponent you are in the game, that means you're
sticking in your game plan, you want to run it,
and you're doing good things. The overwhelming stat every week,
look go ahead and count them.
Speaker 1 (01:21:51):
This week.
Speaker 5 (01:21:51):
I'll guarant ask to you the team that runs the
ball more attempts wise, don't look at the yards, look
at the attempts. The team that runs the ballmore attempts
wise will win. I don't know who's buy week it
is this week, but let's just say you were playing
not sixteen. It'll say you're playing fourteen of them. I'll
guarantee you nine to ten of the eleven it sunded
some weeks twelve thirty of the team that attempted to
rushing more that's not late rushes to in a game
(01:22:14):
that's rushing throughout a game is will win seventy five
to eighty five percent of time. This day, it's cruise control.
It's it's cruise control in the game. And you know,
I was talking with Manny Diaz few years ago. He
had the line, eat your vegetables. This was talking about
defending the run. But that is the most basic of football.
I mean, you know, it's one of those things you
(01:22:35):
talk about with the game. Oh when the forward pass
was invented. The passing game's fun. The passing game is great.
The passing game is the same as the aliup dunk.
It's the same as a huge three pointer, huge home run,
Choeotani hitting one last night.
Speaker 4 (01:22:49):
I mean, that's that's what it is. You love to
take the top off the offense. That's all fine. But
you ask any offensive lineman what's your favorite part of
the game. And I'll run blocking and if I can
move that guy in front of me, and I can
let them know it's not gonna be fun for you.
Speaker 1 (01:23:02):
Body blows. We can grind you down.
Speaker 5 (01:23:04):
Body blows meaning run the ball, physically steal your soul
as an opponent.
Speaker 1 (01:23:10):
They seriously, Yeah, I mean you can't stop it.
Speaker 5 (01:23:12):
Yeah, When and you go into the lot room after
getting pounded into submission with a team that runs it
and handles the line scrimge. You come out of that
one going home, it's like not only they beat you physically,
but it lingers longer in the mental side of it,
because somebody beats you at your own game.
Speaker 4 (01:23:27):
That's why football's the best, because if you win that way, well,
you feel really good.
Speaker 5 (01:23:32):
If you lose that way, it's the most amaning thing
in it. It's a steel locker room, it's a soul.
That's a quiet bus ride. Guy makes a great throw
and you give up three hundred and twenty yards passing,
give up twenty five yards. Rushing guy makes a couple
of great throws in the end. No smier stor even
though you don't want to live with it. That's that's
just sometimes you just got to tip the old hat
(01:23:53):
and say not even tip tip, take it off, throw
it to him and hand it to him. Say that's
just ballsy and great. But when they hand it and
they hand it and it's third and six and they
hand it and get a first down, you're like, oh
my gosh, they're they're there, and it's it's the ribcade
shots man, And that's what good running teams do make
the Packers one dimensional, and maybe you'll have the same
success you had against Buffalo. I don't see anybody running
(01:24:14):
away with this game because both teams are there's some
really good things to like on both. But we've seen
what Mixon does here, and I'm telling you if Josh Jacobs,
if they've got to limit that and hope that you know,
they pressure Love enough to not allow him to sit
back there and deliver the ball on time. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:24:29):
Fully, Phonicassi obviously has been a guy. It's been a
lot to this team on the interior defensive line as well.
As you're not gonna have Mario Edwards Junior. I mean
we found that out earlier in the week suspension for him.
But you get to Nico Autry back as well, so
I mean that's a huge boost for you. What do
you look like at the running back spots? I mean,
you know, talking about the injury report for the Texans yesterday,
(01:24:52):
I mean it was a lengthy one for them. D
NPS as E's al Shaire dealing with the knee. Talked
about fully fun Acosi, he's got the shoulder. Not looking
like you're gonna have Kamari Laster Henry Toteau, Jimmy Ward
or Robert Woods for this one. Laramy Tunsseell was limited
participation yesterday. But that's also one too that I think.
(01:25:13):
Now you look at the injury report and you're no,
where's Tunsel. Oh he didn't practice today, What a surprise.
He'll show up on He'll be there on Sunday. And
that's what we talked about earlier too as well. Is
I mean I get it with tunsl and we do
this all time. Talked about gim Carlo Stanton earlier and
Yankee fans, and I remember I asked a buddy of
mine years ago, I go, why do people like why
do they hate him so much? He goes, look at
(01:25:34):
the contract, because that's what it is. There's a certain
expectation that people hope that you reach. And if you
don't get anywhere close to that, even if you do
get to what you think, your expectations are on your mind,
it's a crucial situation. Oh you grind it into a
double play. Shocking. Wow, that's weird. You never do that
in this situation.
Speaker 5 (01:25:53):
Yeah. I and I one thing though that I always laugh.
We think that because a guy makes more money, he
gets mooed harder. I know our expect go up, but
one hundred million dollars doesn't care. You're going to ground out.
You're going to ground out. You are who you are.
It's and I always say, why are we blaming the player?
All of us would ask for that kind of money. Dude,
talk to the organization that paid him if you got
a problem with it, or not just him in any situation.
(01:26:16):
If you have it with Watson, you may have a
problem with all the extra curricular stuff. But the guy said,
I'd want two hundred thirty million dollars, David Muligeda, you
should be giving him. If you're Watson a crown, you
get you two hundred thirty million guaranteed dollars, did his
job and then some and you go into Cleveland. Why
are you talk to Andrew Berry and Jimmy Haslam, the
gentle manager of the owner. Why are you mad? Or
Stefanski if he had any saying the coach, But I'm
(01:26:39):
not mad at you if you go ask for it. Now,
if you're in the middle of a season and you're
under a five year deal and you're two years in
and you quit on the team because you're not getting
your money, like some of these transfers that play three
games and a leave as a starting quarterback at UNLV.
I got a problem with it because you're quitting on
the team. But if you're in your offseason, it's your wallet,
not mine. And you asked for two hundred and fifty
million dollars or three hundred million dollars and you get it.
Speaker 1 (01:27:03):
Why, first off, why.
Speaker 5 (01:27:04):
Am I mad? Yes, my expectations are high, But I
got news for you. Money has zero to do with
success on the field. It got you paid, it doesn't
mean it's going to continue to produce results that validate
your pay.
Speaker 4 (01:27:16):
Every single guy in that locker room and we don't
see holdouts as much anymore. I mean, you know, especially
out of rookies, that used to be a thing. But
now you've got the slotted pay scale. You know what
you're gonna get there. There is no you know, squeezing
the limon for a little bit more choose. You're just
you're just not gonna be able to do that. But
when it comes to veteran players, I mean we've seen
(01:27:36):
it here in Houston. Of hey, are you upset with
so and so for not being here? No, it's a business.
I guess the players don't. We want them there, but
we got to keep working. As long as you root
for the player to get his it doesn't disrupt team,
but you don't. Good players, good teammates don't get another guys.
Wall should be doing especially too with the you know,
oh you know, don't be greedy all these things. Oh
(01:27:58):
I do this for free. First off, you wouldn't. If
you do, you're a full But it's any of us
in our own professional life. I mean, if you go
in for a negotiation in terms of your deal, you're
not going to say, oh, you know what, I like
you guys so much, because guess then who you're letting down.
You're letting down the homestead and you And I remember
I had a coach years ago that told me I
(01:28:20):
got one group of two people that I can be
nice to.
Speaker 1 (01:28:23):
My family's always going to be there.
Speaker 5 (01:28:24):
Yes. And also you're also when you think it mine,
if you're getting a contract, you're just setting that. You're
just setting the stage for the next guys to get
paid too. You really are, So you keep that mindsetting.
You're setting now, oh we got this. Now there's where
the there's where the we know where the floor is. Now,
who's going to bust through the ceiling and get higher?
But you sometimes guys will keep teammates in mind. You say,
(01:28:45):
why would I get mad at him? Mine's coming up
in a year play the same position. Please get as
much as you can. That's how you feel.
Speaker 4 (01:28:51):
I mean, you've seen it in baseball with Alex Bregman.
Matt Chapman gets his deal. Who else is Matt Chapman
represented by Scott boris exactly right? I mean, they're they're
I mean, and we see it all the time in
the NFL with quarterbacks. Hey, this guy just you know,
they're they're the highest paid quarterback, well for now for.
Speaker 5 (01:29:08):
About a month until the next guy, or two months
and the next day and the next guy. And as
we see these contracts, we know that the highest that
those guys you got over fifty million dollars are not
your best quarterback. Now the mahomess are. But Dak's not
a top five quarterback. Run now he's getting paid. Good
player two is not top five quarter good player. But
their situations the Kirkut, their situation called for great timing award,
(01:29:28):
got a payment. That's okay, I don't I don't think
that they're I don't have after watching him, I don't judge. Oh,
you made twenty so you were underpaid, So I'm not
going to judge you as hard. You make fifty your
fifty five or sixty year overpaid, So I'm gonna judge
you ours. You know, if you if you yank the
ball into the ground at twenty million or sixty million,
you yank the ball on the ground and the criticism.
Speaker 1 (01:29:50):
So the salary has nothing to do with my approach
to how they're going.
Speaker 5 (01:29:54):
The simple thing is whether Dak makes a buck or
makes fifty million, he's underachieving and got to be better.
Speaker 4 (01:29:59):
Yeah, I mean, the contract doesn't have anything to do
with it at that point. It's just a convenient excuse
that a lot of people want to.
Speaker 5 (01:30:04):
Of course, Yeah, you stay, Well, talk to the people
who paid the guys if you got a.
Speaker 1 (01:30:07):
Problem with it, not the guy who got the money.
Speaker 4 (01:30:09):
Well, just make sure you're an expert if if indeed
you know you are going that route with that that
guy in particular, that's.
Speaker 5 (01:30:16):
How Jerry feels right now. Well, good on my guys,
Sean and r J for standing their ground. Hey, you
know what you know they should have done. They should
have showed up at that meeting. They should have showed up.
When I was yesterday or a couple last couple of days,
I said, I would have said, because he interrupted us,
I would have said, you know, he interrupted them.
Speaker 1 (01:30:31):
I would say, by the way, is that an invite?
Speaker 5 (01:30:34):
Can we go? I was gonna say, when I'll drive myself.
When does the plane leave? That's exactly I'll ride out
there with absolutely well, I'll even you know, whatever gas
money I can ship in for.
Speaker 4 (01:30:43):
We'll do our best. Biscuit Joe. Uh see you guys
right there on the phone lines. Get to you on
the other side. Also to a little bit more to

back to former QB Sean Salisbury on Sports Talk seven
ninety getting medieval on him Shun.
Speaker 1 (01:33:08):
Hence the name. That's what always crusts me up. You
don't have to be redundant.
Speaker 5 (01:33:11):
Tell me that, oh chaps, you know, without the with
THET They ask, yeah, well, guess what that's that's the
very definition.
Speaker 4 (01:33:17):
That's that's exactly it. Because again, if it was the
other way, they would just be pants.
Speaker 5 (01:33:21):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (01:33:22):
So a little lesson for you all out there. But yeah,
I'll have to ask.
Speaker 1 (01:33:27):
Little Limo be like, dude, well, what's going on here?
Speaker 5 (01:33:30):
What do you want?
Speaker 1 (01:33:31):
Leathers and chains? Sometimes interesting.
Speaker 5 (01:33:34):
Everybody's welcome, you just got you just gotta know what
type of convention you're signing up for.
Speaker 1 (01:33:39):
I think in the right that's it. No know, the
people we roll with.
Speaker 4 (01:33:44):
We know Biscuit as he weighs in here on Sports
Talk seven ninety, what's going on, Biscuit?
Speaker 6 (01:33:49):
Hey, man, ain't too much living change going on today? Man, Sean.
I'm just I'm just say it against these women's game
is more entertaining than the men in the finals.
Speaker 5 (01:34:03):
Man, wait, you know what I was Obviously I didn't
watch last So tell me what what was Who won
last night?
Speaker 1 (01:34:09):
Did the lens win or who? Who won?
Speaker 5 (01:34:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:34:11):
At least one on a logo three by in that
school with two seconds.
Speaker 5 (01:34:16):
Oh so they took it to the brink again. I mean,
these guys did this this game. These games are close
and tight and so one and on a on a
knockdown three huh.
Speaker 6 (01:34:25):
Man from the logo good Grace.
Speaker 1 (01:34:28):
So is Steph Curry and Oscar Is that who did it?
Is that who we're talking about?
Speaker 5 (01:34:31):
Yeah, school man.
Speaker 6 (01:34:33):
And they came from a fifteen point down and win it.
Speaker 5 (01:34:37):
Every time you call me, then the one time I'm
going to two en, it's gonna be one hundred and
twenty to seven. But no, dude, you're You're right, and
you've been a you might be one of the best.
Speaker 1 (01:34:47):
You and I've talked about it, and you know you
might be.
Speaker 5 (01:34:50):
You might you might be as good of ambassador as
a fan of anybody on the planet because you're not
just watching well, you're watching teams.
Speaker 16 (01:34:58):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:34:58):
It's not just Caitlyn Clark, who I know your infinity first,
she's spectacular.
Speaker 1 (01:35:02):
Well, you're watching some good hoops.
Speaker 5 (01:35:04):
Brother.
Speaker 1 (01:35:04):
We need you.
Speaker 5 (01:35:05):
We probably need to put you on the set and
have you start analyzing it because you're filling me in
every single day.
Speaker 1 (01:35:09):
I love it.
Speaker 6 (01:35:10):
Hey man, I'm from Indiana. Shine. We just hoops.
Speaker 1 (01:35:12):
And I was about to say say you don't you
don't have a choice. I was about to say that's.
Speaker 5 (01:35:18):
DNA, man, and that ain't ever going away. That's Indiana
hoops assembly. Oh I got you man, awesome stuff basket.
Speaker 6 (01:35:24):
PSA to the Texas fans and going up to Green
Bay this week. Man, that's hospital country man.
Speaker 1 (01:35:30):
Yes it is hot shine.
Speaker 6 (01:35:32):
I made a mistake that my niece was going to
school up there. I think it was like forty or
fifty miles from Green Bay. And you know, me and
my wife, I went to Wisconsin for my cousin's uh
and that's into the basketball train up there a Wisconsin,
and so we now let's go visit. We went to
visit her, you know, pick her up, take her out
to get us some groceries. Yep, you know, go out
(01:35:53):
to heat or whatever, breakfast or whatever. And we go
into the restaurant. And you know, from little Indiana, I
haven't never had a problem going to restaurant, being the
only brother.
Speaker 5 (01:36:02):
You know.
Speaker 6 (01:36:03):
We go on the restaurant, we're getting all these looks
and stuff, and then the way that comes up and say, well,
by the way, they not looking at it because you
color looking at it because of what you got on
your head and the shirt you go on. I forgot
I had on my cowboy here. You mean it was like,
right ready to ruing me out the restaurant because of
the cowboy here. But oh yeah, so it's it's gonna
(01:36:23):
be interested for the Texans this week.
Speaker 5 (01:36:25):
Sure, that's the Ties is. You know, that's tough place.
Lambell is a tough go and there's history there, but
they're also a good football team and you waltz in there.
But it's a different feeling. It'll be a great watch
and imagine a little cool air, Biscuit, real quick. I
was about to say, what you're telling your stories like,
oh man, it's twenty twenty four, we not Are they
not beyond that yet? You're telling me there's still a town.
I mean, I'm sure they're out there, Biscuit. Do you
walk in You're thinking they're staring at me because I'm
(01:36:46):
because I'm black, and then you realize you're wearing cowboys stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:36:49):
He's okay, now I get it. So that's that's.
Speaker 5 (01:36:52):
A I was gonna say, Okay, I could accept that. Part.
I was to say, please, Biscuit, tell me you're not
coming over to tell you guys, no, we're not sorry,
said what what what year are we in? That's a
that's a good story. So did you keep the cowboy
gear on as the key, my man, you kept it all. Yeah,
that's there.
Speaker 1 (01:37:06):
You go, there, you go there.
Speaker 6 (01:37:08):
You went back and forth with a couple of Patriots,
but it was all.
Speaker 5 (01:37:12):
I love it. This kid, you're the best brother. I
appreciate the story. Man, that's great. Appreciate call. Yeah you too.
What he did, dude, there's no there's no bigger ambassador
as a fan that calls this show for the w
NBA than him.
Speaker 4 (01:37:25):
But he does it right. They're they're playing damn good
basketball to watch and they actually have players that people
want to watch. Yeah, I've talked about this with the
NBA for the most part that where are the stars?
Speaker 5 (01:37:34):
Yeah, well there's plenty. There's plenty of them in the
w NBA. But you know, you can talk about Lebron.
Speaker 4 (01:37:38):
But like I had this conversation with Ross last week,
Like I could go outside with a picture of Shay
Gil just Alexander and ask ten people one person, one
person would know who it is.
Speaker 5 (01:37:48):
But I can tell you right now, you walk outside
and show a picture of Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark
right now, Honest to god, Yeah, there's a lot of people.
There's more people knowing and it comes with the pr
and the pub and the water. But you can't hide
from the fact that arenas are being stat I mean,
they're they're filling them up and they're and then they're
validating with some pretty damn good basketballs watching every every
one of them.
Speaker 4 (01:38:08):
And why is that, Sean, Because probably women who go
into the w NBA, they've been playing college level for
two three years, whereas you've got guys who weren't even
probably developed enough to be a good enough college player.
They just were better athletes than everybody else. They had
more size, whatever it might be. Why are you talking
about Brownie James like that? It is deeper than Bronnie James.
(01:38:30):
It is deeper than Brownie James. Yes it is, but
I mean, and and the funny thing is to talking
about Lambo and we'll actually hear from C. J. Stroud
and Debiko Ryans talked about it obviously, Stroud playing his
first game there years ago. I remember, you know Mike Smith, uh,
the the former Falcons go and he was asked years
ago when they were gonna go play. You know what,
(01:38:50):
what do you always think of when you go to
lambeau Field. I remember one thing. He said, orange hunting jackets,
he said, he said, you just see when they're when
it's really cool out there, he goes, you look into
the stands and you just see a bunch of orange
hunting jackets in there.
Speaker 5 (01:39:04):
So that's that's that's part of your damn right. Oh yeah, yeah,
and that's one of it's.
Speaker 1 (01:39:09):
The the ice fishermen.
Speaker 5 (01:39:12):
And it's a great It's just you know what, if
you've never been there, it's going to be a great
treat for fans.
Speaker 4 (01:39:17):
I just heard, like you know, it's one of those
you've been to Fenway, and Fenway seriously is a ballpark
in the middle of a neighborhood. And so is this
like you step out exactly what it is. You step
out like around the corner and it's, oh, hey, there's a.
Speaker 5 (01:39:27):
Ball anymore so, because you know, we got the lands
Landsdown is like Landsdown Avenue a street right behind and all.
Speaker 1 (01:39:34):
The bars and stuff.
Speaker 5 (01:39:35):
It's literally they plopped it down and in some family
homes and old school and it is regularly is the
same way phenomenon. That's exactly right, great stuff real quick
before you go to break down, uh on our guy
Mattress smack the needs in North Carolina and Florida. Back
and I were talking yesterday, sent me Messa. I said,
what can we do to help? He said, they're still
beyond belief, tremendous needs. Right and Max sent two fifty
two foot trucks to North Carolina yesterday all the essentials
(01:39:59):
and what they still look warm clothing because it's now
the high elevations North Carolina getting oh yeah, getting cold,
and some of those people are suffering among the other
things that you know help people survive in this that
get them through, which may be months for some of them.
Speaker 1 (01:40:12):
And I think they're probably still looking for bodies.
Speaker 5 (01:40:15):
So whatever you can do to help, Any donations would
be great to use, and you know where you can
drop them off right there on I forty five with
Mattress Mack. It doesn't matter if it's one, doesn't matter
if it's fifty. Drop them off because I think how
people helped us when we went through ours. It's important
and who the hell knows when the next one's coming.
But there's still a lot of needs and we usually think, well,
warm weather hurricanes, but now it's getting cold. So those donations,
(01:40:38):
if you have anything sitting around that can keep people
warm and we can donate it, please do.
Speaker 4 (01:40:42):
You can always count on Mattress Mac. There's no doubt
about it, the very best man. He's the best for
a reason for sure. And I mean if it's helping
people in western North Carolina, Tennessee, or if it's helping
us out here, I mean, he always steps up. So
we can always count our man between Tidwell and Parker.
All right, Joe, get to you on the other side
as well. We'll also get into a little bit of
Astro's conversation because a former member of the organization saying
(01:41:06):
some interesting things that might kind of raise the intenna
for some of you out there. We'll talk about that
and let you hear from them on the other side
right here on Sports Talk seven to ninety.
Speaker 5 (01:41:15):
Hey, guys, listen, country boys roofing country with the k
Boys with a Z. My guy, John, take care of you.
No price gouging. The reason I jump out in front
with that is at times like this, that's the last
thing we need, last thing we need, and John won't
do it. For instance, if you're not military or education
or a first responder, you mentioned my name, one thousand
dollars discount on your full roof. When you go there
(01:41:38):
and you get the estimate, take a thousand off when
you do your whole roof, and one thousand, five hundred
if you are military or educators or first responders, we're
giving you fifteen hundred dollars discount on the roof. Now,
you can't double dip on both, but if you're one
or the other, you go in there and get that discount.
When people are price gouging, Country Boys roofing is not.
They'll go anywhere in Houston. No job is to big
(01:42:00):
or too small. They want to make sure you're safe
and secure, and you deserve that. You just do so.

that could be we'd have to hear Cookie Seg. I
was gonya say.
Speaker 4 (01:42:47):
You know, people say Cookie you know, looks like Michael McDonald.
Speaker 7 (01:42:51):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (01:42:51):
I can also see Bob Seger. You know he's got
He's got a little bit of Bob Seger. That's a
good with a nice silver hair, yeah, dude, and a
full head of locks.
Speaker 5 (01:42:58):
Yeah. Yeah, And there's nobody better on the planet. Cookie
miss is the best.
Speaker 1 (01:43:02):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:43:02):
He coached me in the Litle League maybe oh he did. Yeah, awesome.
He's had the best storytellers and good people on the planet.
They love him.
Speaker 4 (01:43:09):
Storytellers And I'll tell you what, you got to be
on your toes with that guy.
Speaker 1 (01:43:12):
He's funny. It's sneaky funny, sneaky funny.
Speaker 5 (01:43:15):
Yeah. For people who don't know you just don't want
jokes coming at you. Oh yeah, Oh he'll get you.
You cannot be caught flat footed. I'm telling you. He's
one of those guys in the locker room. He loved
having tough but also funniest. Hell yeah, and if you
if he saw, if he saw a little blood in
the water, Oh, Greg could pounce. I love it.
Speaker 4 (01:43:34):
The finn would be out of the water. There's no
doubt about it. Greg, one of the all time greats.
Before we get back to the phone lines against seven

Side see you right there by the way, Dan Matthews
in for Brian Lima. He's Sean Salisbury, Triple E Emmanuel
Elmar Sean Salisbury Show Sports Sox seven ninety. Happy anniversary
to you and to anybody else out there that two
(01:43:57):
years ago found out some significant news because as I
just saw repurposed on Twitter, this was October seventeenth, twenty
twenty two, Adam Schefter a significant shake up in Houston.
Texans are parting ways with their executive vice president of
football Operations, Jackie easter Be sources tel ESPN. Easter Be,
(01:44:18):
hired in twenty nineteen, had a major voice in the ORGANIZA.
Speaker 5 (01:44:21):
So you're saying this is a celebration today.
Speaker 1 (01:44:23):
You damn right it is because you think c J.
Speaker 5 (01:44:26):
Stroud.
Speaker 17 (01:44:26):
C J.
Speaker 5 (01:44:27):
Stroud might be here, because you know he didn't have
character concerns.
Speaker 1 (01:44:30):
Right, that's a good point.
Speaker 5 (01:44:32):
I would imagine that they feel pretty good about moving forward.
Speaker 4 (01:44:36):
And I was gonna say, I mean, you know, I
still never met Jackie. I didn't have you heard too. Now,
now I had heard stories. I guess like there were
like dinners or something that like some in the media
got to go on and it was pretty evident from
some of those dinners where it was this guy.
Speaker 1 (01:44:51):
Has no idea what he's talking about. Like, isn't that
the worst?
Speaker 4 (01:44:54):
Like when you have somebody who thinks of the smartest
person in the room and then like you listen to
them in about I don't know, seconds of the conversation,
you're like, yeah, you have no idea, which it's.
Speaker 1 (01:45:03):
The one in the room is not saying much.
Speaker 5 (01:45:04):
You gotta worry that it's not the one who does
all the talking.
Speaker 4 (01:45:08):
In terms of smarts and also toughness too as well.
They'll get you always tell people go to the locker room.
Don't fight the quiet guy. Ever, fight the quiet guy
working in silence.
Speaker 5 (01:45:17):
Right there you go, But you know he's I don't
even know where he is now cares I don't know
where he is. But the organization has moved in the
right direction and right now has become one of the
stronger organizations in football.
Speaker 4 (01:45:27):
You went from being a laughingstock of those people down
there have no idea what the hell they're doing, and
they didn't to all of this sudden.
Speaker 5 (01:45:34):
Strong firm ownership now and they're doing a great job
and the front office, great scouting department. Your draft picks
are hitting, you're playing good football. You're winning when you're
playing well, and you're finding ways to win when you don't.
Things look good in the future. You've amassed assets and
you're not. You know, it doesn't feel like you're overpaying
too many players. You did a great job of signing
(01:45:54):
free agents and making trades and drafting. Yeah, they've they've
built something pretty good here. I think this is more
than sustainable. And it all starts with the guy. Well,
the front off is getting right players, been a head coach,
and ownership getting the right head coach, and then that
head coach getting good coaches around him to know how
to teach, and finding that quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:46:12):
And they found him that building did not have a culture.
He might have tried to say that they did, They didn't.
This isn't a youth group. Okay, this is an actual organization.
It's at business and you're dealing with grown ups at
a certain point, so make act like grown ups. Well
it's not only that, like the raw raw, and like
the positivity and all of that, and the T shirts
and the slogans and all the things on the wall.
(01:46:34):
Like you know, you were talking about reps earlier. It
reminded me of Butch Jones's line when he was at
Tennessee somebody asked him about an injured player. He goes, well,
he could still get a leadership rep. And people are
like Jesus, man, you seriously have no idea what you're
doing at this job, do you.
Speaker 5 (01:46:47):
It don't be too cheesy as what you're saying, dude,
And I like good motivational stuff and the rest of it.
But they take care of their business. It has a
purpose absolutely if you apply it takes care of it.
They take care of their business. And I can tell
you this that this is they've done it the right way.
So it's not one of those who say a year
and a half from now, they're not gonna be any good.
They're doing it the right way. No, this is just
out of respect for the way they've overcome all the
(01:47:08):
they were as laughed at an organization and top three
in the league five years three, four years ago, three
years ago.
Speaker 4 (01:47:14):
You knew the day that Demiko Ryans got hired that
things were changing, cur because remembering what he was as
a player here and how respected he was.
Speaker 1 (01:47:24):
I mean Fred Warner.
Speaker 4 (01:47:25):
I remembered watching an interview with him, and I think
it was you know, Aaron Andrews interviewing him, and you know,
she asked, you know, how'd you become a pro? He
quickly goes, Tomiko Ryans. Demiko Ryans taught me what it
was like to be a pro. There you go, so
and he's doing that same thing here. No, he absolutely,
his energy doesn't change. He's positive.
Speaker 5 (01:47:43):
He knows when to be critical when ness there and
he calls out there weakness.
Speaker 1 (01:47:46):
We can't be penalied. We can't win like that. But
he's upbeat.
Speaker 5 (01:47:49):
So when a coach is like that, criticize a way,
compliment a way, do what you want, because there's a
and it's not See, liking is different.
Speaker 1 (01:47:56):
You can like a guy and not respect him.
Speaker 5 (01:47:58):
Most of the time, when you respect a guy, that's
much more sustainable than that does he like me or not?
Speaker 1 (01:48:03):
Who cares about that part. I need to know if
he respects.
Speaker 5 (01:48:06):
Me, and I think he's going he's got the ears
and eyes and buying of everybody in that locker room.
Speaker 4 (01:48:10):
Well, because it's also too I mean, I think people,
you know, you want the coach that will yell, paint
off the walls. You had that guy, and you saw
how players reacted to him. I mean, especially the one
guy who was programmed from the beginning to love this city,
who after Bill O'Brien got fired, was on a press
conference saying that guy alienated our fan base, like they
(01:48:30):
hate us now because of that guy. And unfortunately paraphrasing,
of course, but that's pretty much what he said.
Speaker 5 (01:48:34):
If Bill would have just stuck the football instead of
tried to go power hunger with GM and doing all that,
he was pretty good X and doing some good things
at Boston College. He was better then and they won
some divisions. The problem is he got carried away, and
not single handedly, but he had a big hand in
setting this organization back, and he self inflicted brought on.
The embrasiveness that he brought on, it permeated through everything.
(01:48:57):
It was hard for fans to root for.
Speaker 4 (01:48:59):
You know, Bill O'Brien's a really good football coach. I mean,
trust me, just ask him. He'll tell you, oh yeah,
he'll tell you oh.
Speaker 5 (01:49:04):
Yeah, and he is. But I'd prefer me to tell
you than him. But you know, you're you're exactly thing.
I bring it up all the time.
Speaker 4 (01:49:11):
I mean, it's just like, why do you always need
this positive affirmation you're either a good coach or or not? Like,
why do you need to Like I heard that recent
interview he had like before the season where he was like,
you know, hey, we're all good football coaches.
Speaker 5 (01:49:22):
You guys know that. It's like not everything. I'm not
even just talking about Bill. Not everybody's a good football coach. No,
they got there because their buddy's the coach and there
maybe now they made no x's and o's.
Speaker 1 (01:49:32):
They don't have a coach. They're a really good recruiter. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:49:35):
Not everybody that claims to be an experts an expert.
Now they may be in their own mind, but not
everybody's an expert. But the great think about Andy Reid.
When's the last time you heard Andy Reid tell you
he's a good coach. He doesn't have to say it
louder to the people. Does he doesn't have to, as
Belichick ever talks to you how good a coach he is.
Speaker 4 (01:49:50):
Nick Chubb had that line when he was in college
of hey, you know you don't promote yourself. He goes,
Ferrari doesn't promote itself.
Speaker 1 (01:49:55):
Yeah, why would they? Yeah? Yeah, so to me, I don't.
It's okay.
Speaker 5 (01:50:01):
I let us tell you how good you are, and
you'll never hear Andy retail how good he is. Gonna
end up put mustard colored tach.
Speaker 4 (01:50:08):
You know the experts are when when other people tell you, hey,
you're pretty good at this.
Speaker 5 (01:50:13):
You know what you do?
Speaker 4 (01:50:14):
That's exactly all right, Joe. I know, I promise to
get to you. Promise top other side get to you.
And also to the former astro some interesting things to say.
We will talk about that as we close out the
nine o'clock hour.

and Dad, I do it exactly like that. So yeah,
I take it a step further. Oh yeah, there's no,
there's absolutely no doubt. So yeah, no, you know the thread.
I'm gonna do that. Okay, Well you need to help packing.
I think I'm gonna say, Pops, there you go, Yeah,
there you go.
Speaker 4 (01:51:41):
The Astros conversation will actually kick that to the top
of the hour. We'll continue the Texans conversation right here.
Jill on the north side.
Speaker 1 (01:51:48):
What's the way? In Sports Talk seven ninety? What's up?
Speaker 5 (01:51:50):
Joe?
Speaker 15 (01:51:52):
Hey, how's a guy?
Speaker 3 (01:51:53):
What's I had a two questions.
Speaker 18 (01:51:56):
Uh, one of them. The Texans have been winning some
close games, and do you think that means that they're
growing as a team or we should have won those
games by more than that considering the status that we've
been put at. In question two, we lost to the
Vikings pretty bad. And if we lose to Green Bay
and the Lions in the same manner, do you think
(01:52:16):
we're not Super Bowl contenders? But on the flip side
of that, if we win both those games, does that
make the Super Bowl contenders? Does the matter either way?
And I hang up in there right now.
Speaker 5 (01:52:25):
Let me address this first one for you and we
can both address both. I had come from from locker rooms.
I've been in and watching this game. You learn far
more in growth and test your team more when you're
in games that you didn't play well and you found
a way to win. Now, we all wanted to look
forty five to ten. It's great, you'll get one of
those this year, But you live more in those games
(01:52:47):
that you've seen close games in the NFL. Go find
me twenty times this year where you're going to get
a ten point spread in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (01:52:53):
Doesn't happen.
Speaker 5 (01:52:54):
So these games are always, I mean, for the most part,
they're always close. Now you may have the I mean
at least the line six and a half, three and
a half, two and a half, seven a half. And
I'm not even just talking about betting. It's double digit
spreads in the NFL, which means there's only about five
plays and a couple players that are the difference in
a football game. And so to me, winning games when
you play ugly, that to me is is it hits
(01:53:16):
deeper on your own team and draw because you go
into a game and you beat somebody forty two to
you put it this way, if they beat Buffalo forty
five to seven, you didn't learn anything. And you're also
not going to beat Buffalo forty five to seven. If
you play them ten times, you won't beat them. Forty
five to seven. Anymore of those times, it'll be back
and forth. Even if you played Carolina, as we saw
they got beat last year, it happened, so I'm big
on now.
Speaker 1 (01:53:37):
It's fun.
Speaker 5 (01:53:37):
It's a funner week when you kick somebody's ass, but
it's a better growth and more. You learn far more,
and I think your team feels better about themselves when
they gut out wins that weren't exactly the way they
wanted it and didn't go the way they wanted I
think you learn more about yourself as a player.
Speaker 4 (01:53:55):
The first part of it is when you get to
the later parts of this season, and I know that
everybody's looking at the back to back between Kansas City
and also too coming back home for Baltimore. Those will
not be games if you win them that you're winning
by ten boys. Those will be games if you win them,
you're winning by one score, if that's seven, if that's three,
if it's six, If you're getting out of there with
(01:54:15):
a win, you're probably getting out of it with they
close won. And I mean this one, it's kind of
the same deal. And the reason why I bring that
up too, is because if you want to accomplish those goals.
You're not going to be blowing out the team in
the divisional round. I mean, you know what they did
last year to Cleveland. They did a lot of that
because they just basically just they bulldozed Cleveland. You've got
(01:54:36):
to they break them down, and they were just they
were a shadow of themselves.
Speaker 1 (01:54:39):
You're mostly going to be in one possession games at
the end of the game.
Speaker 4 (01:54:43):
And that mentally too. You're in those spots. It's believability.
It's it's the college example. A few years ago. If everybody, oh, Clemson,
are they really for real? Well, they showed you finally
when Deshaun Watson found Hunter renfro.
Speaker 5 (01:54:54):
Oh. Yeah, they're in a close game because they know
they can win those games. If they're in that if
they're in that battle validates story. I asked l Way
years ago. I think I've shared this on here before.
I asked Lway years ago. We were sitting having a beer,
I said, at a golf term. I said, John, how
do you do it? I said, Every times when maybe
you're not as sharp early in a game, but all
of a sudden late in the fourth quarter, you're you know,
forty fifty comebacks in the fourth quarter, I said, how
(01:55:16):
do you do I'm waiting for a scientific answer. I'm
sitting here as a young quarterback. I want to hear
what he has to say. And he said, John, you
know what. I did it once and then I did
it a second time, meaning I meaning the team, and
then from then on, by the time I got the
third time, they and I just expected that that was
gonna have regardless when he got to the end of
the game, we had the football.
Speaker 1 (01:55:34):
They expected it.
Speaker 5 (01:55:35):
There was no scientific answer, There was no we did
this different when the Mets on the pregame, so you
saw them yesterday. How did you guys turn this around?
I don't really know. And John didn't really have an
answer for you. The answer was he had balls of
steel and the team knew that no matter what happened,
no matter how we're playing, we're within a touchdown or
a field goal. John's got us. And that's what and
(01:55:55):
I think that's what we're talking about here. They're gonna
do you want to develop? The reputation is that it
does not matter, but you learn more in those games.
And a quick answer for your other one. If they
lose to Ben, losing to MISSI lose to the Packers
losing the liance. If they beat I think they're already
in the AFC hierarchy in twenty twenty four. They are
because they're winning those two games if they lose the both.
I mean, right now, if you said if they played
(01:56:18):
ten times, do I believe the Vikings would beat the
Texans more than they beat them on a neutral set,
I don't. I think it'd be six to four, seven
to three, five to five. It would be you had
a bad day, Park. I think Detroit right now is
a better team than the Texans. Sure, but they're beatable
and you can beat them if you play them right.
So I two losses won't tell me they can't make it,
and two wins won't tell me their super Bowl bound,
(01:56:38):
but it'll tell me about the character of what I
see in the games and how they play them win
or lose.
Speaker 1 (01:56:43):
Well, I mean, look at last year too. I get
that you didn't have CJ.
Speaker 4 (01:56:45):
Stroud for the game, but you had Cleveland team into
town and just absolutely muld you over like you had
zero chants that day. And of course people of course
the lazy take of it. Oh well, you know you
had an easy time with them, then well, the Texans
proved Okay, we can learn from that tape. We can
go back and then we can show you what we
learned second time around.
Speaker 1 (01:57:05):
They showed them what they learned the second time.
Speaker 5 (01:57:07):
Really tough to beat good teams playoff typeans twice in
the same year. It's hard to do it, just is.
But yeah, so either way, how they play in those
games that he's talking about will tell me far more
than if they If Golf makes a late throw and
they win the game, it's not gonna tell me they're
not can't keep compete and they beat And if they
beat him by two touchdowns, I'll say they're playing pretty confident.
(01:57:29):
But four plays in the next game and a quarterback
making a bad decision and a coach making a bad
time out call cost us throw the flag at the
wrong time that ends up losing you a game. It's capable,
and it wouldn't have to be Detroit. You can do
that against the team that's not very good. So it's
how you handle those the end game. I'm big on
the pregame preparation, in the end game adjustment, and then
(01:57:49):
I get a better idea that the Houston Texans are
real in the AFC, and those three teams you mentioned Vikings, Lions,
and Packers are all very relevant in the NFL. See
as we know, the Vikings are still sitting at undefeated.
Speaker 4 (01:58:02):
They're five and one, and I'm not going to do
the if the playoffs started today, but they've got the
second most wins in the UNFC. So that's got to
show you what you've been able to do to this point.
I don't care about style points, I don't care about anything.
You're five and one, so don't apologize for anything, and
still hope that your best football is in front of you,
which I'm sure the Texans sure hope is the case.
(01:58:22):
All right, So on the other side, nine o'clock hour
will continue the Texans conversation. We'll finally get to the
former member of the Astros organization. Some interesting stuff to say.
We'll talk about that. Let you hear from them as
we start off to nine o'clock hour.

Speaker 2 (01:59:22):
To usc true longtime friend, Shawn Salisbury.
Speaker 3 (01:59:24):
Ryan Lima, go Lobos. This is the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 4 (01:59:32):
There's Game four coming up later on tonight, Yosi Yamamoto
against Jose Quintana. Game three Alcus tonight in Cleveland. Yankees
up two to oh in that series over the Guardians.
Texan's back on the practice field that yesterday. They'll get
back out there a little later this morning before heading
up to Green Bay to take on the Packers this
weekend Thursday night football Tonight got the Saints in Broncos
(01:59:57):
in New Orleans. No Chris Olave, no Rashid Shaheed for
the Saints. I was going through some of the names
that Spencer Rattler is going to be counting on Sean
for this game.
Speaker 1 (02:00:10):
One of them, yep, a guy named bub means well.
Speaker 5 (02:00:14):
I think he'll have all the means to make a
play in the game. I think it means I think
he means business. This weekend. You got tonight, I should
I say this weekend. You know, uh, he could. He
could probably give you some of the mean girls approaching
the game.
Speaker 4 (02:00:30):
Mason Tipton and Cedric Wilson Junior also going to be
a part of the receiver corps. Come a long way
from Marcus Colston and Courtney Roby, and I mean, anybody
else that was catching passes from Drew Brees means a
lot to him.
Speaker 1 (02:00:47):
Better better mean a lot to Dennis Allen.
Speaker 5 (02:00:50):
Although that that the whispers have already started, but they've
been doing that for a couple of years. About is
Dennis Dennis the hell of a defensive coordinator? Can they
get back after that first start when he was now,
oh look we got it going on.
Speaker 1 (02:01:03):
I don't think he's necessarily the problem either. They need
more players.
Speaker 4 (02:01:07):
It's it's yeah, well who's in charge of those players?
So mister, I'm gonna sit up here chewing my gum
and I'm going to pull up my notepad and you know, hey,
you know what was it? I watched it the other
day and people there in New Orleans are bringing it
up right now. If you know, oh, Tom Leandry, this
was his record, dude, don't try to compare Dennis Allen
to those guys, like what you're making an ass of
(02:01:29):
yourself in this entire process.
Speaker 5 (02:01:31):
I actually stopped stopped doing it. I didn't know if
Dennis was going to make it through last offseason. Honest
at a good coach, but some guys just did the
head coaching. It may not be their their biggest strength.
They they've underachieved at times, but you know you're starting
quarterback shirt. You're finding out who Rattler is. Defense looked
(02:01:51):
horribly horrible last week, A chance to come back and
not let it fester. And I actually think it's not
a bad thing that win. A young quarterback only gets
a short week. You want to know why you're not
think about it right. You get it out of your
mind from last and he did some good things and
things have to improve on, but you don't let it
fester for a full week. You're not tempted as an
(02:02:11):
offensive staff to put in extra stuff that you saw
and you panic and say we got to add more.
Keep it simple, let him do the things he does
well and expand it with different formation and stuff. You
don't need seventy plays. So a short week can actually
be beneficial in my mind to a young quarterback.
Speaker 4 (02:02:29):
So if you're looking for a receiver, pickup bubb means
tipped in or even Cedric Wilson Junior is a possibility
for you out there.
Speaker 1 (02:02:38):
So I think we all know what this game means.
It means a lot. It means a.
Speaker 4 (02:02:43):
Ton, every every by any by any means necessary.
Speaker 1 (02:02:47):
See I do you do you sincerely mean it? Oh?
Speaker 4 (02:02:50):
I mean it fully well. I can do this as
well as anybody. I love it, trust me, I forgot
love it all right. Brandon wants the way in here
on Sports Talk seven ninety Brandon, what's up, buddy, Brandon.
Speaker 1 (02:03:06):
I've got to go, Brandon. We'll get you a little
bit later on.
Speaker 4 (02:03:11):
But I mentioned a former member of the Astros organization
having some interesting things to say, and the former member
of the organization, Dusty Baker, was on a podcast with
Joel Sherman and also with John Hayman as he was
being asked about his time with the Astros, also just
(02:03:31):
what eventually led to him deciding to step away, and
Dusty Baker talking about some of the things that he
ran into during his time with the Astros.
Speaker 19 (02:03:42):
Some of the battles with the front office I've had
for a number of years. Sometimes you get tired of
fighting city Hall on something that you are ready, that
you're sure about. Now, granted, I did want to win
back to back. That's what I wanted to do, probably
more than anything. The reason you know I came back,
and let's face it, at seventy years old, you know
(02:04:04):
most people have just drawn their pinsion and their social security,
and you know I was making a good living and
doing what I like to do.
Speaker 4 (02:04:13):
All right, that's not necessarily anything surprising in that first
bite right there. I mean Dusty even talking about a
little bit when he had his retirement press conference, and look,
he accomplished everything he ever needed to. He was a
heck of a ball player during his time. Hall of
Fame manager. He'll be in Cooper's town here when his
time comes that he's able to get into enshrinement, there's
(02:04:35):
no There's no doubt about that. And I think after
they lost to the Rangers in the LCS, it was
pretty much well known that might be his last game,
because again, what else do you need to accomplish.
Speaker 5 (02:04:44):
I'd tried to talk about if I was a team
that needed to turn around, I try to tell you
I had good players. I don't think Dusky's going to
go for a five year turnaround. I think he once
watched his kid play and spend time and he only
on his vineyard and he likes to garden and do
all those things. And knowing him a long time passionate guy,
but he's listened many. I would try to talk him
out of it. If I was a good team that
(02:05:05):
maybe somebody left or retire, I would try to talk
him out if.
Speaker 1 (02:05:08):
It was out of it.
Speaker 5 (02:05:09):
If I was an organist, I say, can you give
come back, give us three years, Let's let's see what
it looks like. I don't think he wants to rebuild somebody.
You give him a good team, he would, And I
understand why i'd want to win back to back. And
I also understand some of his frustration of him not
getting his own coaching staff as well well.
Speaker 4 (02:05:22):
And we'll get into that here in just a second,
because that was something that he did weigh in on.
But I mean, just before we get to there, I
mean the time that you needed him to come in
and stabilize this thing, he did.
Speaker 1 (02:05:35):
And I mean he's ever been a more difficult time
to do it.
Speaker 4 (02:05:37):
There was no more of a difficult time to do
it not only of what you were just coming off
of from you know, having to answer to the rest
of baseball for but also too, I mean covid all
of those things.
Speaker 5 (02:05:48):
I mean, he was an incredible navigator through it. And regardless,
he just was. You can disagree with some of his
pitching moves and what you didn't like, disagree with every manager,
that's everybody. That's right, so for him, and I know
people's argument, but well, he has a great team, great players.
Speaker 1 (02:06:01):
Yeah, he was fortunate.
Speaker 5 (02:06:03):
That isn't not the goal the goal, but there's a
reason they brought him here and to just to stabilize
everything through that and the horrible you know feedback you
got from around every ballpark you went in, meaning because
of the cheating scan on the rest of it. So
I thought he was perfect for the time he was here.
You know, I'm he's a friend and a fan, so
(02:06:23):
I maybe even more so. I love Dusty Baker, and
I think Joe Spott is doing a nice job. If
I was an organization, I'd see if I could convince
Dusty Baker talking him out of retirement. I'd for if
you're if you're close and need that stabilization or a
veteran leader. Uh and who knows baseball as well. He
Dusty Baker has seen it all. Stay on the vineyard.
Speaker 1 (02:06:41):
I think.
Speaker 5 (02:06:42):
No my attempt to say, dude, you've done enough, you're
you're on the way to the Hall of Fame. Enjoy
your son, travel around, do whatever you want. To be
a consultant like he is for the Giants. Sure, and
enjoy yourself and do media. Hell, he's really good on babes. Yeah,
and then you get to set your schedule, go in
twice a week and do it, set your skin sed
and go for selfish reasons because I think he's good
(02:07:03):
at that his job. But he's also really good at
that putting on a coat and tiang going there and
talking baseball because he's not Dusty's not a forty year
old manager trying to get back in. Dusty's seen it all.
He's not afraid to criticize or compliment somebody because he
doesn't care about that. That what if the organization doesn't
harm me, He doesn't need him to. Yeah, he it's
people chasing him, not the other way around. And if
(02:07:23):
he didn't want to do it, but TV's good on Dusty.
Speaker 4 (02:07:26):
You talked about the organizational being able to run things
the way you want to, coaching staff, all those different
types of things. Dusty Baker did talk about that we're
up against it, so we'll save that for the other
side as well. You can react to these words as
well if you want to. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety. Once you get that seb one
three two one two five seven ninety. More from Dusty

Domdalphon on Sports Talk seven ninety Home of Your Stros
This is your demographic man. Yeah, everybody in this arena
loves this music. Yeah, Less Alexander man Hey, I will
never speak ill of Less in terms of what he
did for this city. Well, in terms of the organization
(02:09:04):
they won some championships.
Speaker 5 (02:09:05):
To just wish that the music at games was a
little bit different, that's all.
Speaker 1 (02:09:09):
That's all. I didn't need to hear.
Speaker 5 (02:09:10):
Hey, we're coming out of a huge timeout money money.
It's like, what a great cut. But I did tell
you a hockey game. I'm not an old timers day. Yeah, yeah,
that that cut.
Speaker 4 (02:09:24):
Yeah, there was probably about like five percent of the
arena that actually was just like, yeah, this is a
bigger true.
Speaker 5 (02:09:30):
Arena and stadium music are so important. Well, I mean,
like it's funny, you know.
Speaker 4 (02:09:34):
Growing up, we Will Rock You was like the the
the premier stadium anthem along with Rock and Roll Number two,
the newest one. You know, we were talking about this
just aay mee Gordy and I can't remember who else
was out in the bullpen that seven Nation Army is
that song now.
Speaker 1 (02:09:49):
That it's just it's just so easy, right, yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:09:51):
You know, I mean, and everybody can you know, be
able to channelong with it? Uh, you know all that.
That's exactly right, that's it. Yeah, it's all about the fans, right.
Speaking of the fans, some of you were fans of
some of you were not of Dusty Baker, and you know,
you know, Sean you brought up the point about being
able to pick his coaching staff and everything else of
(02:10:13):
the sort, and in terms of talking about his time
with the Astros, that was one of the things that
Dusty Baker did talk about with Joel Sherman and John Hayman.
Speaker 19 (02:10:22):
You know, the thing about modern baseball now is that
you know, you're expected to, you know, to kind of
fall in line on what they want you to do,
and then if it doesn't work, you're out there by
yourself and justifying, you know, and say we when it
(02:10:44):
really wasn't we, but it was it was day. But
you can't say they, because then you don't sound like
a loyal employee, you know, Like I love Houston, and
you know, I like the organization.
Speaker 3 (02:10:54):
I liked.
Speaker 19 (02:10:56):
Jim Crane, especially because you know, he's one of the
few people in the game that never, you know, told
me a lie. And I'm big on, you know, being
honest with me, and you know, but the one thing
that that kind of bothered me a little bit is
that I only chose one one person on my staff.
(02:11:16):
And you know, when you choose your staff, most of
the time, loci comes with it. Not to say they
were disloyal, but you know that was a J. Hinch's staff.
Everybody there except one guy.
Speaker 1 (02:11:30):
All right.
Speaker 4 (02:11:30):
So I know a lot of people want to jump
on the second part. First, I don't think he's necessarily
talking about the astros as like this is an ASTROS thing.
I mean, I would probably venture to guess a minute
and a half we heard from him in the two
cuts is that he spoke pretty highly of his time.
You just heard what he said about Jim Crane that
he appreciated his relationship with him. Worked with a couple
(02:11:51):
of different general managers during his time as well. Him
and James Click came in at the same time. Obviously
towards the end of his tenure was the beginning of
Dana bur So. I mean, there is that relationship that's there.
There's going to be agreements, there's gonna be disagreements, all
of those things.
Speaker 1 (02:12:06):
That's that's life. You don't worry about that.
Speaker 4 (02:12:09):
I know that people are going to jump on the
second part right there, Sean, because they're going to say, well,
you took the job, you knew what you were stepping into.
I think it's also though, too, it's easy to have
the benefit of hindsight right there, because you're talking about
a guy who wanted another chance, and he wanted a
chance to be able to win a world title, and
I only he did and he did do that. He
(02:12:30):
accomplished that goal. But some people might say, well, why
wouldn't you ask for that upfront? I don't think he
felt like he was in a position.
Speaker 5 (02:12:35):
To do that.
Speaker 1 (02:12:36):
He may have asked and I got it. Well, and
here's part of that as well.
Speaker 5 (02:12:39):
I can tell you this, I know for a fact
Dusty Baker does love this town. And I know for
a fact that he loves managing and loves being around
the players, and ohs, and let me just play the
what if game? This I don't know for a fact.
I have not talked to him about this, this part
of it, the what if game?
Speaker 1 (02:12:56):
What if?
Speaker 5 (02:12:58):
What if somebody was undercutting him as on the coaching stuff, Well,
what if somebody was. I mean, he didn't name names.
What if somebody Why would anybody be mad at that?
They're not we as fans or some of us in media.
We don't know how deep that way. I don't know
if it did. I'm just saying, why would we be
mad at him? If he said, you know, if there
was somebody on his staff that he felt, whether he
did or not, wasn't loyal. And if you heard him
(02:13:19):
when he introduced it, he said, in modern baseball and
the way we do baseball night is the Astros baseball
We they hire And he's right, somebody hire, whether it's
in Pittsburgh or wherever they hire, You tell you who
you got to keep, the reason why you want another chance,
and the Astros, of course he's going to take the job,
even though you know an he won a World Series
without the guys he wanted to bring in. That being said,
(02:13:41):
you adjust to it and adapt like we tell our
players to. But when that happens, when somebody tells you
who you got to hire anywhere if you win, it's
all great. But when when that run comes to an
end and you're moving on, it's He's right, it is
become you. Those weren't your guys. Now they may end
up being your guys. They're there, but they weren't the
guys you brought in that you wanted in the first place.
(02:14:03):
So there's I don't think it's derogatory at all. I mean,
we kill people for not you know, we go crazy
when they don't tell us the truth. Sure, honest, he's transparent. Honest,
I mean I understand what that bother. If I'm a
head coach and you tell me that I can't hire
my own plug guys, i'n have a hard time taking it.
But if it's a good team, you say, okay, let
me adjust, and some would just say I'm not taking it.
Speaker 1 (02:14:23):
If you have more than one option, and.
Speaker 4 (02:14:24):
If anything with Dusty, I mean, you know, in terms
of transparency, everything else of the sort. Those were some
of the criticisms that people had that he doesn't let
out a little bit more.
Speaker 1 (02:14:34):
And I mean, you know, I know that now.
Speaker 4 (02:14:35):
It's a difference between him and Joe Espata in terms of,
you know, what do you get from Joe as opposed
to what you get from Dusty. I think that Dusty
kind of looked at it as a certain way if
the personality showed, there's no doubt about that. I always
had good interactions with them. I don't know if everybody did.
That's for them to worry about on that. Well, that's individually,
that's on them. But it's also though too. I mean,
(02:14:57):
to his point seventy years old, and that's why he
decided to walk away, was saying, look, I've done everything
I need to do and there are things that go
with it that frankly at that age, I mean, it's
it's Danny Glover in Lethal weapis I'm too old for this.
He finally said, I'm too old for this. I don't
need to do this anymore. It's it's not worth banging
(02:15:18):
my head against that wall anymore.
Speaker 5 (02:15:20):
And I love that he complimented James Jim Crane, who
traded in with respect and was honest with him all
the way through.
Speaker 1 (02:15:26):
I like that.
Speaker 5 (02:15:27):
I'm one that believes you should be able to hire
your own staff. That's why you're bringing me in to
do it. But you know, then you've got to decide
as the guy who the possible manager, the guyho's getting hired.
Is it worth bringing guys into how you're going to
do things that weren't the guys you hired. Now, I
will say this, and you were talking about, you know,
the dusty and winning at seventy years old. How many
(02:15:49):
guys that's why we'd all take the given People say, well,
you took the job. How many people do you know
it's seventy that weren't already in the organization managing to
get to read a new contract. They get hired by
a team that's got these type of players, and you
get hired at seventy to be the manager. Normally you're
on the end of it. Like you said, you've been
(02:16:11):
in that organization. You just died to retire, or he
had a bad season, get fired, and you just go
you're done. Rarely are you going out in search of
a seventy year old manager on a team but he
was perfect for this team because the veterans can handle
the clubhouse, and he lets those guys handle and police themselves.
Speaker 4 (02:16:25):
Well, it's also too, I mean I think, like when
Bruce Bochi retired from the Giants, I think that he
had every full intent purpose that he was done with baseball.
Speaker 1 (02:16:33):
He'd had enough.
Speaker 4 (02:16:34):
But then obviously the Rangers called him up, and he
looked at the club and said, yeah, that's good ball. Chance,
Yeah that could be fun. The same deal goes Terry
Francona just you know, just got hired by health. His
health is good, so he caught it back. I mean,
I think that probably when he stepped away from the
Cleveland job, he said, that's it. I've done what I
needed to do. I won world titles, I got close here,
things negotiable. Brother, It is because it's also too. You
(02:16:56):
step away enough, you let the emotions kind of died him,
and then you do I mean, where you're kind of like,
what am I doing?
Speaker 1 (02:17:03):
I want to do this?
Speaker 5 (02:17:04):
How many people retire and then a year or two
later I see it all the time with friends, buddies
and minor people I know retire. Two years later they
started a new business. Why because they I mean, they're
tired of play. Get tired of playing golf every day,
thirty six hols are tired. They want to get out,
and the lifestyle they've had for forty or fifty years
is you wake up, you go to work. It's the chase.
Of course, it is the destinations. Ah, I've achieved the
(02:17:26):
destination matter of fact, and everything I do the actually
the landing spot in my life. The destination is not
when I say DestinE, it's not the destination. It's the
when you say chase, it's the road to get there.
It's the journey, the journey love. When you get to
the destination, sometimes it's actually you know you expect it.
It's anti climactic. It's all the things leading up that
you go through to get there. And I believe anybody
(02:17:48):
that's retired can be tempted to come back. So when
you retire, you retire. But man, like a concert guy musician,
I'm retired, and then all of a sudden, the money and
that matters, good money, a chance to be around, stay
young and stay energetic and do what you've always done.
And then they say, we'll give you a hundred million
dollars for the contract tour, all right, we'll do We'll
do another.
Speaker 1 (02:18:04):
I go and you know what, I can get on
the road and do this.
Speaker 5 (02:18:08):
So and you know, why would we be mad at
people I'm not saying you are that want to continue
their career after taking a step back. What a luxury
it is to be able to walk away and sit
back and still know you want and then come back
and go win a World Series and continue to validate
a Hall of Fame career. We all that option, whether
you choose it or not is fine. So do I
(02:18:29):
believe Dusty's done managing?
Speaker 1 (02:18:31):
Probably? But do I believe that what if the team
What if his.
Speaker 5 (02:18:35):
Son's team calls in one one day, you know, he's
a major league star and says, hey, man, love to
have you manage us for three year contract.
Speaker 1 (02:18:43):
You don't think he'd consider it. Of course he would.
Somebody wants him.
Speaker 5 (02:18:46):
He's in he's young, acting, he's cool, he's the smoothest,
coolest guy in a room. Now, whether you disagree with
some of his stuff and then run ins with him,
that's okay. Those happen with every manager, So you know
those are both Bouch and Frank Con are great examples
as well, so Dusty, I don't think he said anything
to this derogatory. No, he said what everybody feels, and
we'd wonder, well, that was a generic and if you know,
(02:19:06):
he told you would have liked to hire his own people,
but loves Jim Crank.
Speaker 4 (02:19:09):
Because it's also too I mean, you know, if you
read those quotes, you're kind of like, oh, is he
talking about Dana?
Speaker 1 (02:19:13):
Is he talking about James? Click? Who is he talking
about here? Who care? Who was on his staff that
you know he's talking about it?
Speaker 5 (02:19:20):
Don't you respect a guy who didn't name names on
his way out. Finally we got a guy who just
doesn't call people out when he leaves.
Speaker 4 (02:19:24):
He didn't explicitly say that someone was trying to undercut him,
and he said it's a possibility when you don't have
people that.
Speaker 5 (02:19:30):
I know, whether it exactly you're saying, the loyalty usually
comes from people a little closer to you, sure, or
at least you expect it to be right, because it's
like family to me. My teammates were family. I was
around them more than it was my family during the season. Yeah,
and when you're a manager with him all those days,
So yeah, I don't think there's anything derogatory, there's nothing.
Speaker 1 (02:19:47):
Well, I can't believe he didn't throw anybody under the bus.
Speaker 5 (02:19:50):
No, I mean, he just said some things he'd like
as a manager, and that baseball's kind of changed that way,
that you're gonna you want this job, You're going to
take on what we tell you to take on.
Speaker 4 (02:19:57):
People say they want the truth, and then when they
get it, sometimes they don't like it.
Speaker 5 (02:20:02):
Yeah, that's well, that's that's a fact that unfortunately, Dusty's
not going to back off from the way he feels
about something. To stay your feelings, That's exactly right. The
hell does he care if people are upset? Whatever?
Speaker 4 (02:20:12):
Anthony, I see you're right there, Tony, I see you
right there. I know you guys went to weigh in
on those Dusty Baker comments.
Speaker 1 (02:20:18):
Will do that much more.
Speaker 4 (02:20:19):
Final thirty minutes of the show right here, Sports Talk
seven ninety I.
Speaker 3 (02:20:24):
Had to live there for the Sean Salisbury Show, continued.
Speaker 4 (02:20:30):
Daily source for on this day in Saint Louis Cardinals history.
I think we know where I'm going with us Brad Ldge,
Albert Poohols, everybody's standing in the stadium.
Speaker 5 (02:20:43):
Are you really going there? And then a fateful slider
back in two thousand and five, it was hit to
Saint Louis. Actually it was hit to Saint Louis. Bobby
Dynamite didn't even have to duck for that one.
Speaker 4 (02:20:52):
They're like, you know, you know, it's like one of
those like you you hear one off the bat, or
you see one off the bat and you look at
your left fielder and he's.
Speaker 1 (02:20:59):
Still staring aim and looking at home plate.
Speaker 4 (02:21:01):
Doesn't even nobody did that better than Carlos Lee, like
he he was notorious for. If it was just a
no doubter of just his feet were planted, you'd just
give it a quick look and knew there's there's no
there's no.
Speaker 5 (02:21:13):
Back to home plate when we hit that high up
and that the upper tank forget it. Yeah, so get it.
Speaker 1 (02:21:18):
So I'm sorry Astros fans.
Speaker 4 (02:21:20):
But a couple of days later, a guy named roy
Oswalt makes Bourbon. Now he went and threw a gym
up in Saint Louis. You got to celebrate and then
got to go the World Series for the first time.
Speaker 1 (02:21:31):
Country tough with that right, he could ramp it back.
Speaker 4 (02:21:33):
You've heard, you've heard the car engine story, haven't you
before Anthony and Tony get to you, guys, see you
right there.
Speaker 1 (02:21:40):
You haven't heard the car engine story about Oswalt.
Speaker 4 (02:21:42):
Yeah, so, so he had like some sort of like
impingement or something in his shoulder. He's back on his
land in Mississippi working on his truck and I guess
there was a grounded wire or something.
Speaker 1 (02:21:53):
It shocked him. It knocked him back, and he gets.
Speaker 4 (02:21:57):
Back up off the ground, you know, kind of pulling
himself together. Hey, am all right, you know things. Good,
shoulder didn't hurt anymore. There you go, that's said muscle stem.
Speaker 5 (02:22:06):
Yeah. Maybe not that he got it the natural win
didn't want it that way, got it and go back
out there and ramp it up in the upper nineties again.
Speaker 1 (02:22:15):
So yeah, Oswalt was fun to watch it.
Speaker 4 (02:22:16):
He was he was. He was a gamer, no doubt
about it. Anthony and deer Park was the way in here.
On Sports Talk seven ninety Anthony, what's up, buddy.
Speaker 16 (02:22:24):
Hey, good morning guys, Sean Dan. I enjoy you on
Stace City Saturdays.
Speaker 5 (02:22:29):
Man.
Speaker 16 (02:22:29):
Thanks, Hey, I hate that I missed Texans Talk. I'm
real proud of those guys, man. They got the most
wins in the NFL right now, and I still think
they haven't played close to their their best football. But
as far as the Dusty thing goes, I can't wrap
my head around the hate. Dusty came in and took
the reins of by far the biggest villains in baseball
(02:22:53):
and took us to two League Championship series and the
World Series championship. And you know, I didn't always agree
with the strings that he pulled, and that's the case
with every coach across any sport. I think we as
fans always will have a grit here and there. But
I think at the end of the day, Dusty did
(02:23:15):
exactly what the Astros organization hired him to do. So
I've never understood the Dusty hate.
Speaker 1 (02:23:21):
Couldn't agree more.
Speaker 5 (02:23:23):
Well, there's maybe some BFF agreements on whether you played
Maldonado and who was playing the position. I get that,
but I questioned that at times about a spot of
this year too. It's okay, Dusty Baker did a hell
of a job here, and I mean, I mean, I
don't know if we're so spoiled that we're like, wow, yeah,
every decision they make is not going to be right.
Every decision of spoted me every decision. AJ Hinchman was
(02:23:45):
not right. But the majority of these good managers, the
majority of them they win with. And Dusty Baker I think,
like I said, I criticism is one thing, hatred's another.
I think Dusty Baker was outstanding here, and you can
make an argument while he was here he made his
big a difference as any manager did in that short
period of time that was here for three years or
whatever it was four years at their point in time.
Speaker 1 (02:24:07):
It was also a reputation I think that followed him in.
Speaker 5 (02:24:09):
I mean that as fair about Oh he doesn't handle
pitching staffs, for sure, judge him by that. I know
we all have history said well he want any good there. Well,
if we lived our life like that, none of us
would have a gig.
Speaker 1 (02:24:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:24:19):
I think he was thought of as being like kind
of a slightly more successful Buck Showalter, Like he got
the giants there, but then, like you said, managing the pitching, well,
you managed the pitching better, you might beat the Angels.
Speaker 6 (02:24:29):
Now.
Speaker 4 (02:24:29):
I think he was a Hall of Famer before he
got here. Same deal in Chicago of you know everybody,
you know, oh, Steve Bartman. But then you know, if
Alex Gonzales fields a routine ground ball at shortstop. We're
not even talking about that. We're not talking about how
pitchers were used anything of the sort. You're talking about
the Cubs going to the World Series that year. So
I think there was a lot of that that people
kind of again had their intenna raised about with Dusty Baker.
Speaker 1 (02:24:52):
But it again goes back to you. You brought up
Joe Espota.
Speaker 4 (02:24:55):
I mean, how many times this year did we hear
about he's in over his head, he's too nice, players,
all these different types of things, But then you also
saw that there was a method to the madness. You
can't run hot in baseball like that's If you do
that as a manager, you will be gone, Especially when
you have a veteran clubhouse like the Astros have. Somebody
will go up to Jim Crane's office and they won't knock,
(02:25:17):
they won't open the door, They'll just walk in and say,
this guy sucks. I will not play for that guy.
We all hate him. Player do not want to play
for that guy.
Speaker 5 (02:25:26):
Players performances will usually tell you how they feel about
a manager, and they were pretty damn good when he
was here, just like they did a nice job. It
was up and down, a little less consistency, but that
goes with injuries and Joe Spot and it was just
one of those years and they'll they'll be they'll be better.
And aj Hinch he had to get through his his
times as well. So Dusty is a veteran exp Hey,
let's just given much required been in the league a
(02:25:47):
long time. We expected it, and I think Dusty Baker
did more than deliver when he was here.
Speaker 4 (02:25:52):
It's also too, it's again another thing that was not
his fault is aj Hinch was so beloved and it
was also when the announcement was made he was fired,
it was like why, like I you know, get the suspension,
all of that kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:26:06):
Whatever could he have done more?
Speaker 4 (02:26:07):
We can have that discussion another time forever about but there,
that's what it went in for Brands.
Speaker 1 (02:26:13):
He's not a Hinch well.
Speaker 5 (02:26:14):
And also he wasn't responsible for a J Hinch and
that team. He wasn't here. That's on them. He brought
in to fix it. And I tell you what, there's
a lot of places and people that would have come
into that if football, basketball, or baseball, and couldn't have
fixed it. And you'd have left without another title. He
helped wasn't the only reason, but he was a big reason,
and helped a team stay good and stay consistent and
(02:26:37):
win a World Series and continue to win the same
things that they won before him, Division championships and getting
themselves to the ALCS. Dusty Baker owes no apology for
why he was here or what he said.
Speaker 1 (02:26:48):
He didn't rip anybody. He didn't. He was just fair
like all of us.
Speaker 4 (02:26:52):
He gave us reasons for he for why and and
and the reasons why he stepped the way is he
again accomplished what he needed to.
Speaker 5 (02:26:58):
If you're a PD programmed for in this business and
they tell you do the hiring and you get who
you want, but then they say no, never mind, you
only get to hire one person and we're going to
hire the you're the PD is I mean, you do
it because you want the PD job.
Speaker 1 (02:27:12):
But you're kind of.
Speaker 5 (02:27:13):
Saying, well, that's I had my eye on this guy
because I know there's nothing any job, sales, whatever, it
is just the way it works.
Speaker 1 (02:27:20):
But then you fit in and go go win. And
that's what he did. You want me to cook the meal,
let me buy the groceries.
Speaker 5 (02:27:25):
That's a bill Bill Parcells style. That's the best, one
of the best, and I don't need to buy them all.
I just have a saying, hey, get two cans instead
of one. Right, that's okay with that, man, okay with that.
Speaker 4 (02:27:34):
You know, although in these times, you know, you go
to certain grocery stores, then you get to.
Speaker 5 (02:27:39):
Half a can. Yeah, you get to that counter for
the price of seven can.
Speaker 4 (02:27:42):
There's a little bit of sticker shock once the final
total comes up on the screen. All right, Tony, I
see you right there, get to you on the other side.
Will continue this as we close out this edition of
The Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 3 (02:27:56):
This is the Sean Salisbury Show.
Speaker 5 (02:27:58):
Salesful, every single one. It's like Sheridan's cornered the market.
I mean, that dude is crushing television right now. And
Stallone's perfect for that role. You know, he just keeps going.
I think a lot of people in Hollywood must like him,
not just his grind, but just he seems like a
(02:28:19):
pretty genuine dude. And like Sandler, to the loyalty of
his people. He's loyal to all those guys, you know,
the Schwarzenegger's and the god I hope Bruce Willis is
doing okay. You know, I know his health is deteriorating
a little bit, but is Willis? Those guys is and
I love that loyalty. And and you know, his sister
(02:28:40):
in this one in Tulsa King is the one he
was after. And what's the Copland? You see Copland? Underrated movie?
You got to see Compland Copland's a good ass movie.
I agree. And Stallone has had a crush on her
in that and all these years. That's exactly right. And
now she's you know, his sister in this show, in
this movie Tulsa King, it's got a great storyline drugs
(02:29:03):
in mind. He got a good group that he kind
of put together from cannabis store to bartender and singer
and turn it around and now they're all and the
dude who's his chauffeur making more money than the guys
that are trying to chase him and kill him.
Speaker 1 (02:29:16):
I mean, it's classic.
Speaker 5 (02:29:17):
So Stallone, it's it's a good If you haven't watched,
it's good to and it's good. Once you get into
the rhythm, you'll like it. And Stallone's perfect for the role.
Speaker 4 (02:29:24):
I love that that that scene too, where he gives
the guy a stack of money, Go go buy a Lincoln.
Speaker 1 (02:29:28):
Yeah, that's exactly right.
Speaker 5 (02:29:30):
Take take me to the dealers' Stallan's you know, got
his group of people that and there's not two of
them are the same, but they're all pretty cool. And
then he added a big dude, who's a who's this protector? Now,
who's we might be able to break a gun in half.
So it's a it's pretty cool man, good show. So
there you go. That's all and stallone has withstood the
test of time. It's been pretty cool man. It seems
(02:29:53):
like a it seems like a good dude. To people
he's around, they say father time is undefeated.
Speaker 4 (02:29:58):
I think slice s alone is safe. He might beaten
all the time. Now you've get you've got one loss. Yeah,
I'm living proof. I understand too what people might say,
chemicals all that. Hey, look, I mean, soon enough, nature
takes its course, and it hadn't necessarily seem to have
taken it with uh sly.
Speaker 1 (02:30:13):
It is funny, Tony. I'll get to you here in
just a second. It is funny.
Speaker 4 (02:30:16):
I remember he posted a picture with Dolph Lungern a
couple of years ago, and people were like angry. It's
like guys and ladies, you do realize that it's a character.
Dolph is not really Evan Drago that I mean, he
played it and he played it well.
Speaker 5 (02:30:31):
Yeah, it's and and sly slie and then so so
did Creed got the revenge on on one. That's exactly right.
So and all those guys, whether it's in the you
know the uh with Uh what's the show with Statham
and all those where they're beating not not untouchables, or
(02:30:52):
it's I mean all those guys along, they're all in
that with him. Stam and him are tight. He goes
in all these movies. I just I like loyalty, Yeah
I do. And you know what, he's built that group
of a handful of dudes and and people that that
loyalty and then you know, people like them together and
they're doing and Okay, he may be at some point
he's gonna be to the point where he's he's just
(02:31:13):
gonna turn over that group, yeah, to the to the
to one of the younger dudes. But I still like
those movies. Man, I like the whole you do, and
I like I just think Stallone seems like a good
guy and if you're loyal, I'm in for sure.
Speaker 4 (02:31:27):
I am one hundred percent. Be loyal, be genuine, don't
be disingenuous. Those are the rules of the Shan Seals.
Speaker 1 (02:31:33):
Don't be a prick.
Speaker 5 (02:31:34):
Well, some of the time you gotta be that guy
fits in with the disingenuous.
Speaker 4 (02:31:38):
Yeah, although they'll tell you to your face that they're not.
I'm a nice guy. You sure keep telling yourself that.
Speaker 1 (02:31:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:31:44):
Tony and Angleton closes out here on Sports Talk seven
ninety Tony, what's up.
Speaker 1 (02:31:49):
I'm loyal to this show.
Speaker 5 (02:31:50):
I am. I listen all the time.
Speaker 1 (02:31:52):
Damn right, Tony, damn right, thank.
Speaker 5 (02:31:54):
You, the Dusty Baker.
Speaker 17 (02:31:57):
As soon as I heard the Dusty Baker thinks, I'm
uh okay, here we go.
Speaker 12 (02:32:03):
This is not the first time he said anything.
Speaker 5 (02:32:05):
Go back and listen to the press conference his last
press conference.
Speaker 17 (02:32:08):
What he said about sometimes just not say anything was
better than saying anything at all. And and I listen,
that's the staff that he inherited. He inherited the staff,
the whole staff. And only only remember that was was
new was was Lopez first base coach? So what so
he's talking probably talking about GP Gary Pettis and I
(02:32:33):
think there was you know there was there was problems, man,
But but they still want a World series despite all that.
Speaker 5 (02:32:40):
That's important. Do you got to compartmentalize, man, That's the
way it works. And they went to they went the
two world series one one of them, went to three.
Speaker 17 (02:32:48):
Ale al c s.
Speaker 6 (02:32:49):
There's one, one, two of them.
Speaker 5 (02:32:51):
I mean, you know, uh, you can pick all you want.
Speaker 17 (02:32:55):
Dusty Baker came in and did it, and a very
very difficult circumstances came in and did it exactly.
Speaker 5 (02:33:00):
Amen, Tony. Amen. And I don't know who if if Tony,
great stuff man, thank you for the calling for always
being a part of the show. I who knows. It
might not have been anybody here. But the bottom line
is you always like to put your wall around.
Speaker 1 (02:33:15):
You with the people. When I talk about the people
you trust, we all do that. And why would you?
Speaker 5 (02:33:19):
And we'll wonder about your leadership if you didn't have
weren't precise in who you wanted, dynamic and who you wanted.
But the Astros were able to adapt and Baker and
the team and do their thing and they keep winning.
Speaker 1 (02:33:29):
And that's a good thing.
Speaker 4 (02:33:31):
We try to keep winning here on the Sean Salisbury
Show again. Dan Matthews in today for Brian Lima Alima
back tomorrow, Triple E Emmanuel Elmore.
Speaker 1 (02:33:38):
He's Sean Salisbury.
Speaker 4 (02:33:40):
Next up Stan Norfleet, Chris Gordy come on your way
right here. Sports Talk seven ninety
