The Shawn Salisbury Show continued.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Welcome back to the Shawn Salisbury Show. You're on Sports
Talk seven ninety. Shawn Salisbury, Brian Lima, Manuel Elmore continue
to talk to Houston Texans taking on the Colts. Let's
welcome in NFL insider Aaron Wilson.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah, we do k c RP right, kkkp R k
p r C. Did I say it? I said it's
Casey KPRC channel to Ksey Casem. Yeah, there you go.
Those are the initials run together. You got to say
it fast, KHRC two Sports two sports. There you go.
You catch them there, you catch them right here on
Sports seven ninety dot com, on our show every Friday,
and on Twitter at Aaron Wilson knows the league as
(00:41):
well as anybody, and also these Texans. It's great to
have him on for his eight thirty visit. Aaron, let
me start here. People ask me all the time about
how do you fix during the season, you know, physicality
and or protections. Is it the quarterback missing hot reads?
Is it the five guys up front that are missing
easy blocks and not understanding concepts. Is that the coordinator
is not put in a position. Is it the offensive
(01:02):
line coach. Well, there's a lot of questions and I
think everybody's involved in protections, but they are not doing
a good job of it. How do you fix it?
Speaker 3 (01:12):
The way you do it is you have to address
lack of experience and you have to see what can
you do to get you know, the learning curve up.
When you have a young center j scrugs who's making
those line calls. You've got a young quarterback that wants
to be more involved in making the line calls. And
(01:33):
you've got a second year offensive coordinator. As far as
being a play caller, Bobby had a background. You know,
it's a passing in quator, but it's Kyle Shanahan that
runs the forty nine ers offense. So you have a
lot of younger people age and experience, so they how
they gain it. You know, you really back to them
(01:54):
by fire. They have these rough moments. There were I
don't think every week you're going to see something as
clever as what Jeff Hasleay the Packers even sported him
up with. I think he deserves some credit for coming
up with something kind of fresh, but some of it
isn't that tough to stop its basic alignment of climb
a technique. And it's not just the young people. You know,
(02:15):
it's Dalton Salts letting a free rusher Xavier McKinney to
hit the CG S droughut of the back.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yeah, when he didn't have anybody to block. That's his guy.
He's got to swing. You got to look inside out
and at least get a hand on him his outside arm.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Right. Yeah, that's a poor effort. Yeah. So what I
what else leads me with is it is dangerous because
it's not just that you can't run your offense. That's
bad enough. If you get your quarterback hurt the flip
side of this, then it's the sky is falling mentality.
I mean, look out, look at the mood around here.
Look at social media. I mean they're five and two.
(02:51):
People are freaking out, and it just shows you had
the expectation to rech higher. But also probably you know,
there's no respective and they lost by two points at
lambeau Field. This is not a tragedy. I think some
perspective is an order. It's bad and they played a
bad game, but you know it's tight of Howard. I've
(03:11):
talked like I've interviewed every offensive linement about this, uh
and at this point, yeah, yeah, I all got all
five all five guys since Sunday or at Sunday when
I was at Lambeau like with Laramie, And yeah, they're
accountable about it. And the problem is it's like a
basketball team. All five guys have to be in unison
(03:33):
working as one, and if one guy screws up, the
whole play is bad. They did fix the penalty issue
that they're that one that they're coachable and two that
the coaches are able to coach something. So I think
it's you know, is he going to give, you know,
(03:53):
get that many sacks and hits every week? No?
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Probably not.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Do they have some protection issues they are going to
crop up again. Good defenses, good pass rushers, Yeah, probably so.
I mean those those guys are good. And that guy
played the game of his life, no no relation to me,
Eric Wilson. Two sacks, four tackles for losses. It's like
his heros on fire. I mean, this guy was flying
around the field and I think whatever it was, there's
(04:20):
some inspired play by a Green Bay and I think
it's hard to win up there. It's a very, very
tough atmosphere. Teams to go in and get him win
at Lambell. They almost did it. They still almost won
the game if not for some you saw Bobby's comments.
Bobby took a lot of accountability for the play calls
for what didn't work. Uh, he says, it's on him.
(04:41):
You know. I like the way they've handled the setback.
I don't think that there's been no finger pointing. I
think these guys, you know, they stick together and that's
good to see. And you know CJ straight through his
helmet on the sideline, he's frustrated, had some words, but
nothing outlandish. And then what you say this week, I
got respect from my line. You know. I believe in
these guys.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
Oh you got yeah, Yeah, those are the things you
have to say. I mean, of course, and everybody in
that locker room should defend In there, you defend your home,
you defend your family, and that's the way it should be,
regardless of what everybody on the outside saying. Or you'll
have no chance. You got rabbit ors, You're in trouble
now with that. Let me get back to this protection
thing about Scruggs being young and c J Stroud. I've
always believed and Stroud's proven that he's a big time
(05:23):
player in this league, and if he wants to be
more involved in protections, I would never especially if the
center's young. He's not a twelve year KG veteran who's
a pro bowler, or he's a guy who's you know,
a Kelsey who's been in the league and knows how
to do it. I don't understand why the onus. I
can never remember Kirk Loudermilk was our center in Minnesota.
Now if he wanted something, you're you're calling your Kate
Shawn Sean, check it, check it, check right? This role
(05:45):
protection make Mike forty eight? Okay? Fine? Well why wouldn't
we don't do that enough? In high school, guys are
snapping their head over to the coach. In college, they're
doing the same thing. Why aren't we allowed? Why aren't
they allowing a quarterback who's got a better vision than
anybody else, he's standing up the centers in a two
point stance? Why on the way, and he's young. Why
(06:05):
wouldn't we let CJ. Stroud direct the protections and understand
where his unblocked guy is so he understands it and
puts them in a position that we as it. That's
called part of growing as a quarterback. Why not, right?
Speaker 3 (06:17):
I think they're going to get there. And another thing
that was reiterating, I think some people had some questions
about this. Does CJ have the ability to audible?
Speaker 1 (06:25):
And yes, yes, that was my next question. How much
how much freedom does he get?
Speaker 3 (06:30):
He has the freedom, he has the green light. He
can change the play if he wants to. It's just
a question of as a young guy, do you do
that in your second year? Do you change a lot?
Answer probably is very very infrequently that he would be
something like that. He's gonna trust what Slowick gives him,
and most of the time slog has I mean like
the third and fifteen, like he noted they'd scored on
(06:52):
that play a couple of years ago. It just it
wouldn't have worked anyway if he caught it because of
the press coverage and the type window. He would have
to atop the clock and it wasn't going to work.
There was an ill fated play. The running plays, they
knew what was coming. They'd run them before, as he said,
(07:13):
and the packers loaded up and they stopped him. And
you know, Joe Mixon, I mean he's he's great, but
you know, is he gonna you know, run everybody over.
You know, he's gonna make everybody miss, like Barry Standers
and Water Payton. No, that was like that's who he is.
He's a good back, but you know it was there
was no way he was gonna get free from those plays.
(07:33):
And it just left you where you you almost had
this your first intended to twelve with some you know,
time and enough time to get in there and run
some better plays. They're better off throwing.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
It was a bad series and working the inside of
the numbers, set outside the numbers.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Yep. Yeah, Now you gotta beat the Colts. You're there
four and three, you're five and two Colts on the
pass rush of this team, and they got Jonathan Taylor back,
they got good receiver Zalac Pearce, they got downs, they
got Michael Fittman, and we get a secondary that you know,
it's giving up some plays. Uh yeah, Statistically they're they're good,
but they give up big plays. In the opener. They
(08:11):
made some changes. You're man from the USC Camin Bullock,
lights out, all rookie type of kid. Uh three interceptions.
He's a big part of the solution they get Kamari
Lassner back maybe looks a little bit different. I mean
that was a difference in the game. They were picking
on the Angela Ross. There was the clean release of
the line for the touchdowns on Tam Wicks. You know,
(08:32):
Lasser maybe he makes that play, yep, maybe he's locking
that guy down. So uh, they're you know, still play
at linebacker. They've got Totsou couldn't practice two days in
a row because it was concussion, and Allow missed this
game with a knee injury. Jimmyward and missed this game
with the coroin injury. And you know, I think it's tough.
(08:52):
I look at, you know, the Devin White thing, that's
more depth, that's not trying to plug him in. You know,
we'll see how long are these other guys out, But
I think it's going to be just Jack Hansen and
w has played well on Sunday and see what they
can do. Aaron, this will be an easy.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Game, yep. Aaron Wilson, you can catch him see him
on TV Channel two here in town and he also
sports seven ninety dot com and also on our show
every Friday at eight thirty, and you catch him on
Twitter at Aaron Wilson. Let me hit this first off
about Devin White. Twenty six years old, phenomenal player at LSU,
(09:32):
phenomenal start to a career in Tampa, and it feels
almost like overnight his game went to South, can't get
on the field and Philly gets beat out. Now he's
on a you know, he's trying trying to he wanted
a big contract. He's in the prime of his career.
Has this game fallen off that much or did he
just not fit with Philly and anymore with Tampa? Where
is he at? Do they believe they got a steal
(09:54):
and can make him a player again?
Speaker 3 (09:57):
They think that he's a good player to work with,
that he could that they can bring that out into
him again. You know, maybe not one hundred and forty
tackle nine sack Devin White, but you know he's still
in his physical prime. What happened to him in Tampa
A lot of it had to do with money, and
I think it became a distraction for him and personal
issue because of his contract and they didn't want to
(10:20):
commit to him. I have to ask Jason Light why
they've never really said why they didn't want to do it.
Maybe it was the financial demands. You know, he does
have BA representing them, and it looks for him more
than they wanted to pay. But they don't value the
off the ball linebacker that way. A lot of teams
don't in Philly. It's a big fangio. You know, Vick.
(10:40):
Vick is a stickler. Didn't seem like you documented knowledge
of the defense was the same as the other guys
they've plugged in. So he lost his starting job and
they never played them, which isn't weird if you don't
really rotate linebackers. If you're not a starter, you're not
going to play. And then personal reasons, I would say
(11:02):
when they lifted that for the fifth game, that's like,
all right, just cut me and you know, and then
he's been out there. He hasn't had tryouts or visits.
He's not the kind of guy you really have to
work him out. Uh. The guy ran a four to
four to two coming out of LSU at two thirty seven.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
Yeah, he is a freak show.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Then oh, he's as fast as the running backs are faster.
So I just think with the Beagle, Ryan's got a
very away with linebackers. Work with this guy, you know,
obviously you're committed out. He's Austi here three years, thirty
four and that's been a good investment. But just to
Tole have to be the guy next to him, and
so to has played well, you get some concussions, you
(11:45):
got to look at you know, do you want to
create some competition for the guy next to him. Maybe
you're signing him for the off season kind of on
another proven deal and see how it goes. But I
don't have problem with them bringing him in. Kicking these
tires a big risk, no risk, really. I posted the
contract last night. It's one year at one point one
two five million rate, but it's actually just six hundred
(12:08):
at eighty thousand and change. Yeah, so it's a good investment.
Nick in Cerio, you know, it's good that he looks
for opportunities like that when he can't improve the team
to reals. So they're not talking about the trade deadline,
but everybody else is maybe they want to add something.
I don't know, we're going to see. You know, they're
(12:29):
getting guys back, and everybody talks about corner like Jeffacuda
is going to be back in a couple of weeks.
Does you need more to will be back in the
next few weeks, and then maybe people feel differently about
the depth at the positions in the second area that
primarily that's what they've been talking about. I don't know.
I don't know if they make a move.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Yeah, let me finish with this. How if Jonathan Taylor plays,
if you make them one dimensional and don't give up
the chunk play like they did a couple times against
the Colts in the game one, How does a forty
eight percent completion percentage guy beat you sustaining drives?
Speaker 3 (13:07):
He shouldn't that, you know, sometimes he hits those like
you know, he didn't hit a d Mitchell who was
wide open. He got a beat last or last this
person at they'll start and they got lucky the Texans.
That wasn't a touchdown should have been. He still hit
a ton of deep balls and he's hard to tackle.
He got Jonathan Taylor for him to hand off through
(13:27):
Jonathan's back this week, that's usually an issue to try
to either get like that stop They didn't. You know,
they could hang Josh Jay Hilps for a little bit,
but he was heard from them. I think they got
a challenge against his offense. I think that's figure issues.
They have a low pressure rate. The Colts. They do
get the first bunker back, but it's his first game back.
(13:48):
I don't know. I looked at it and I think
Texans on paper, they stack up well. It should be
another winnable game, and Joe Mixon is probably the X factor.
Joe at one hundred and fifty nine yards. Guys to
give one hundred and eighty one yards last week and
Joe's going to roll right now. You can take a
one hundred yard games. I said, you put it on
Joe of Joe carry you. You know, he's the bell cow.
(14:12):
Maybe he can really be the guy that takes you
to a victory, fix them to put them in a
great spot heading into a very winnable Jets game. We
have some Jets team that I think is a mess,
and you know the oh yeah it's New York, it's
Aaron Rodgers, it's all those things. So but yeah, that
(14:34):
would be an interesting one. I'll be up there for
that one, and I'll just to you know, just take
one game. The time of the cliche goes. But I
look at this game and I think they should take
care of business. They play better at home I think
they went.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
There. He oh, okay, yes, no problem, you just we
we went the mike went dead for the headset dead.
We didn't hear, but you just said they played better.
They played better at home is what you ended with
us last week and they went at home.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
YEP.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Should be interesting man. I will give me a score
in your mind. What do you got.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Texas twenty four Colts.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Twenty four to seventeen win by a touchdown? Sounds good
to me? Which you'll get him to six and two
and they still have not played their best game yet.
Look forward to it. Aaron, great stuff, brother, enjoy the
game on Sunday. We always appreciate your insight man. That's
Aaron Wilson. Will come back discuss
