Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we're fat.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
The Shawn Salisbury Show continued.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
What About Shawn Salisbury.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Show here on Sports Talk seven ninety. You can also
listen to us on the free iHeartRadio app. And it
is that time of the show here on a Friday
to talk Texans and Lions, NFL Insider or KPRC Channel
two Sports. Aaron Wilson joins the show.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, you can also get him at Aaron Wilson on Twitter,
covering the Texans in the NFL as well as anybody
in the country. And we're grateful we have him here,
all right, my man, First and foremost, how let's get
to the trade deadline that passed. How active or how
much did they seek offensive line wide receiver. Did they
go fast and furious or were they What we got
(00:50):
in the building is what's going to sustain it for us,
all right.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
They never took a real aggressive approach. They explored a
few things. They just you know, didn't have a lot
of cap space or a big guard contract or wide receiver.
In the case of wide receiver, you know, when you've
already major big move to trade for a Stefan Diggs
in the off season and you put a lot of
salary into the position with Nico Collins, there's not a lot
(01:14):
you can do, and you know, to think that they
can snap their fingers and they're going to have at
guard like a Wyatt Teller or Nate Davis or Brandon Shurf,
all of them were available and give up even more
draft capital and paint a man. I just think he
(01:35):
was unrealistic and I don't think that they did anything
to create outside expectations. They were very the Nico Ryans,
you know, kind of made clear like, hey, we're not
just to make moves to make moves. This He didn't
say this is fantasy football, but that was kind of
where he headed. I think they've got a good enough
roster and you've made these investments. You got to coach
(01:57):
these guys to develop the talent and work with what
you have. And I think a lot of people get
caught up in the trade deadline because it's exciting and
they think that, oh, you're one move away, and that's
the way a lot of fans think. But they have
to be a lot more conventional and logical they're thinking.
And I don't think they did anything wrong. And you know,
in dumping Khalil Davis for a seventh round pick. Okay,
(02:21):
well you may have had to cut him or Kurt
Heinish next week when you get back Mario Rebards Junior.
A lot of people forget that that his suspension is
ending after this Detroit game, right went pretty fast, yep,
and he's a good football player. They get him back,
all right?
Speaker 3 (02:37):
With that, Aaron, and going back to and you're you're right.
I had said on this show when we always appreciate
you joining on Friday, the guys in the building are
going to be what's the difference if you get a
guy on offensive line? It was going to be a
depth thing and the receiver wise, you were going to
hope Nico gets back, And we had said the room
was pretty damn good in the offseason, and now they're
one down, two down, but one down when Nico Collins
(02:59):
gets back with digs that the simple question is, and
the conflict is offensive line play. Detroit's really good and
it's only going to get tougher as the season goes on,
obviously into December. So how how do you combat the
weakness of the team, And we know what that is
past protection? How are they going to combat that?
Speaker 1 (03:20):
You have to coach these guys up. And we're talking
with Chris Stausser yesterday off camera, but there there's some
audio that I've posted on my feed. You can hear
the frustration. What they have to do, you know, is
fundamentally block better. You watch the tape and you can
see why there be you know, guys turn their shoulders,
(03:43):
guys get you know, don't get to the point, their
hand placements bad. There are a lot of fundamental issues.
And here's some of the numbers. Check makes them seven
and a half sacks. That's the most among the scars,
five sacks. G Scruggs. As for sinners, Kenyon Green, who's
got a shoulder injury and is resting and rehabbing that
(04:05):
his sidelined indefinitely, he's got six sacks and he's got
the most pressures a lot of any guard. So it's
no secret it's the interior. Because Laramie Tunts is the
fourth highest rated pass blocker, he's only allowed two sacks,
and Titus Howard has held his own on the right
side your bookend tackles, and you've got problems with all
(04:26):
three of those guys. It's not all just the line
calls it's not just what you saw in Green Bank,
w A lot of that, you know, is confusion, and
some of it just you know, Juice Scrugs being a
first year starting center after playing guard as a rookie.
I look at it and I think, you know, for
Chris Strausser, it was up in years. You know, maybe
(04:48):
maybe this will be his last year. We'll see. I
look at it all and I think it's They're all culpable.
But the only way is to fix it is to
not have t this drive becoming this gun shy, throw
off his back foot guy whis in him at all,
But that's what they're turning him into.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
That's human nature of what's happening.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Yeah, I mean the guy's eleven for thirty one because
he's running for his life back there. All right, Well, Aaron,
let me can't run the offense other than running the
ball this way.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Right, Okay, So with that, let me go back to you.
You made great points on Okay, we are nine games
into the season, and you you went through a litany
of this guy, you know, taking the wrong step. Hands
aren't the right place now, I mean, eyes aren't in
the right place. How and I know the other guys
are getting paid too. It's tough to block. But how
(05:34):
are we tech? How are we to? They sure as
hell are. It's a tough position. You gotta have all five.
You can have four of them working. If the fifth
one's not, you're gonna get beat you. You're gonna take
sacks and pressure. So with that, how is technique a
problem nine weeks, ten weeks into the season. Why is
the same things happening week after week after week and
it's happening against simple twists and stunts? Why?
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Right? They say? You know, to be a great teacher,
you have to be able to teach your slowest learner,
not just your best students. So it's got to be
broken down and taught, and then all those players have
to be coachable and drill and drill and drill and
work on the fundamentals because players do improve, players do
(06:19):
get better. And like Chris Shauser said, if they couldn't play,
they wouldn't be here. We didn't think they could play
because he was asked, do you even have the good
enough players to get this done? And he defended the guys,
and he defended Kenyingary and that's what he's supposed to do.
He's just out there and throwers got to the bus obviously,
But the truth of the matter is, he said, no
(06:42):
one's happy about it. We have to not getting a
job done. And why do you have an offensive line
coach doing a group interview with the beat Because we
asked to speak to him and he was gracious enough
to meet with us, and the Fiard department arranged it
to discuss the answers. He said, you know, he feared
to be sooner rather than later that he had come
(07:02):
in and have to talk about it because it's been
a deficiency, and that sometimes happens in the NFL. It's
not always just like the only guy that doesn't interview
is the guy that or the position group that, oh yeah,
you know, look how great they're doing. Well. It's more
than that, you know, sometimes there's accountability. He's very accountable.
That said, you know, how does it get better? I mean,
(07:23):
you know, if I'd be an offensive line coach, if
I could answer that question. You know, there's lots of
great offensive line coaches that have business league, you know,
the Joe Bugles and Nantescar neck Is. No Es Strausers
are the biggest name. No, it doesn't mean he can't
teach these guys and they can't play better football. I
look at it all and I think they have too
many of the same sort of low key personalities across
(07:46):
the line. You know, we have yet to see like
a real feisty type of play from any of these
guys as far as like finishing the block. I'm not
advocating violence or fighting, but I mean, I do think
there's something intimidation factor with something. If that's not who
(08:07):
you are, it's just gonna be an out of character,
like weird move to you know, personal foul someone. I
don't think that's what you need. I think, you know,
you got to do it within the elements of the
game play to the echo of the whistle, that kind
of thing is what I'm talking about doing. But they
got to knock some on their butt and they got
to get mad. It's got to bother them enough that
you do something about it. You can't just be frustrated.
(08:29):
Uh and uh. Tyas Howard had kind of a funny
line this week, O Gallows, you were we were talking about.
He watched the movie drum Line tream Winds, a movie
about a band marching band in the South, and you know,
he's the one band, one sound, and he's right, it's
gotta be all five guys in the movie. I remember
(08:50):
I watched this movie a long time ago. They played
a song called Flight of the Bumblebee. Well it sounded great,
and you know, the band was awesome, and they got
to be like that. You know. Grade five is like
a basketball team doing a weave drill. They all have
great footwork, they're all in tune. And this this is
looking like a song or a dance step that's out
(09:13):
of step. You know, it's been a bad show so far.
And they're a prideful group. And I know all those guys,
they all care and they're all great guys, but they're
not getting.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
To job them a couple more minutes with Aaron Wilson,
you get him at Aaron Wilson on Twitter covers football
as well as anybody and covers these texts. All right,
let me get these two in real quick. Nico'collins, where
are we with him?
Speaker 1 (09:40):
He is physically ready to play. They're making a decision
to hold him out. He is, you know, in the
view of the medical he has passed all these tests,
the whole regiment of them. His speed is full speed,
his conditioning is where it's should be. He hasn't been
(10:02):
returned to practice, and I do expect them to play
against the Dallas Cowboys. They have not done it this week,
and that's their choice. Sometimes with hamstrings, you do something
one week later because you don't want any risk of
a flare up. So you know, they're playing it safe
with their seventy five million dollar investment, and that's a choice.
(10:24):
So you know, for people who want to didn't quite
understand my statement from earlier in the week. He is
physically ready to play. That's what my sources, TELVI and
I believe it that he is ready, and for weeks
he's been on track. But you know, what the player
wants in terms of like the players always want to play,
They always want to get back out there as fast
(10:45):
as possible, and what the team is looking in terms
of the big picture can be different. So that's a decision.
And I know a lot of people are like, well,
if he's physically ready, to want him out there, because
they want him out there still bad, But the team's
got to do what they feel is the right thing
for him and for the good of the overall football team.
(11:06):
So that's the decision. And that's the thing that varies
a lot of times. Like last week, people thought, well,
as these off here and Jimmy, they're practicing. If you
look at the video, they're moving kind of stiff. They
weren't really ready. It was a short week to play
the Jets, so very obvious. This week they're practicing, they're
moving around well, and we know they'll play. And that's
(11:26):
my understanding from all those guys. You get him, you
pull those guys back. But yeah, for Niko, Yeah, they
just that's their opinion. And there could be a rushtackt
there cauld be all kinds of things, but they made
that decision. I think it's a different kind of injury
than a hamstring. Maybe he's playing, but that's the choice
they've made, and so that's what they're going with. And No,
(11:47):
I don't think that they would roll them out on
Friday and say let's play Sunday. I mean, you know,
I mean, if they did that, I think any kind
of gamesmanship if he was to practice, let's say he
did hypothetically, if he did that, do I think anyone
will believe he's played Sunday night? No, why wouldn't he
practice Clint Stands Thursday, so you know Die is pretty
(12:08):
much cast at this point. That wait till next week
and they'll need him against the Dallas Cowboys. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
I'm sure that the fans, some of the fan base
is going to be bothered by that decision from the organization.
But I get it because tissue injuries.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
They're right at me so and as if I'm not
in charge of it, I they want to shoot them,
they want to shoot the messenger, and that's okay. I'm
accountable for any kind of report. But never did I
say he will be back for sure this week playing football.
I'm just giving a health update, and it was optimistic
enough that yeah, probably people think, well that means they
(12:47):
have to Well, no, they don't have to do anything,
and they run the team the way they want to
run it. It's the same thing with personnel decisions, and
they make those decisions, not the media.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Right, all right, let me got thirty seconds, so get there.
I know this is a tough one, but I do
got to get it in before you go. I think
that the Detroit Lions are the best team that the
Texans have faced, all around, best teams. Tell me why
I'm right or wrong, they.
Speaker 1 (13:12):
Have the best backfield. Jared Goffin's precise passer, his rhythm,
his throwing to aman Roth Saint Brown, the ability to
just pile up for sounds, and he can even get
deep if he needs. To Look at the backfield, they're
good enough. They're getting nicknames, video game nicknames, Siic and Knuckles.
That's Jamiir Gibbs and David Montgomery. They're both on pace
(13:35):
for over a thousand rushing yards and fifteen touchdowns each.
That hasn't happened for a backfield since Lamar Jackson Marketing
Room with the Ravens in twenty nineteen. Pretty good. Yeah,
they got Frank Ragnow, they got Penny Sools, they got
studs up front. They got a lot of good offensive linemen.
On defense, they play an attacking, aggressive style. Their safeties
(13:56):
Brian Branch and Kirmy Joseph combined already for ten interceptions
at this point in the season. Look at the pace
they're on yep, I mean Krimi Joseph is playing like
some and Reid type of football statistically through his first
couple of seasons.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
This is special.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Stuff's happening back there. When they're glad in that defense, yep.
And they're doing it without Eton Hudginson. They traded for
Darius Smith. This is a very tough football game, yep.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
And they also as I'll let you go on this,
this is the most aggressive not not a head coach,
play caller mix, just pure coordinator. This is the best
coordinator and the most aggressive they're going to face this year.
In my opinion, they are Ben Johnson's special my man,
great stuff. What'd you give me a score?
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Ryan's twenty four text and seventeenth.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
There you go went by touch seven point victory, my man,
great stuff. Appreciate all the insight and we'll look forward
to next week. Have a great weekend. Thank you, thank you.
That's great. Aaron Wilson will come back and discuss he
got the Lions by seven. Nico Collins physically ready to go,
but not going to play. They're taking extra caution. Does
that mean they can to eat? To Detroit Sports Talk
