Speaker 1 (00:01):
KBMS Houston a CBS HD two Houston, my heart radio station,
the Astross, the Rockets, Rockets your home for your home teams.
This is Sports Talk seven ninety Saulsbury, Oldbury, Salisbury, Houston. Okay,
(00:23):
let's do this. Sean Salisbury, the to USC true, longtime friend,
Shawn Salisbury, Bryan Lima, go Lobos. This is the Sean
Salisbury Show.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Pitchers and catchers reporting in two days for the Astros.
University of Houston beats Baylor in Big Twelve Conference play.
They are now twelve and one in conference play. Stocks
some Astros. Buster Oney reporting yesterday that the Alex Bragman
(00:58):
saga could be coming to a close here shortly. I'm
assuming he means this week. He mentioned the Tigers, the Cubs,
the Red Sox as the three teams that he could
see Alex Pregman signing with. He did not make any
mention of the Houston Astros. It's probably the first report
that I've read in a couple of days or a
couple of weeks actually that does not make any mention
(01:20):
of the Houston Astros.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Not sure what information he has.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
It's different from any other reporter that's been speculating on this.
This thing is dragged on so long. It's February eleventh.
Pitchers and catchers are reporting on the thirteenth, first full
workout with everybody's gonna be on the eighteenth, so we're
essentially seven days away from the official full squad spring training.
(01:44):
Don't know where Alex Pregman's gonna go. There's been some
reports out that you had the Cubs off from a
four year deal with some opt outs, you had the
Red Sox, you had the Tigers. Tigers offered him reportedly
a six year deal, but he doesn't want to go
to Detroit one fifty six here in the CD of Houston.
There was also another report that the Astros increase their offer.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Yet we don't know any of the money. We don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
We don't know the money that the Cubs offered, the
Tigers offer, the Red Sox offered. All we know is
six for one fifty six. What's the aav of twenty
six million dollars a year.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
It's ain't enough.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
I know a lot of people are pretty much over
this whole situation, But at the end of the day,
it's Alex Bregman. He's a pillar of this organization, a
massive part of the Golden age of baseball, and.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
We don't know where he's gonna go. So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
I think I think one of the biggest Okay, let's
just say triple Let's just say that Alex Bregman is
no longer. Obviously he's not an Asher right now because
he's a free agent. Let's say he does not come back, Okay,
which it's looking like that.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
That is looking like that, all right.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
So one of the big questions that I've heard a
lot of people talk about, uh a part of the
fan base as well, who's gonna be the next leader
for the Astros. Alex Begman had a full grip on
what goes on in that clubhouse. He helped out the
pitching staff, an absolute grinder that you hear from. Dana
Brown talks about him. We heard Jeremy Penney talk about him.
So who's gonna be that next guy? Kyle Tucker, don't
(03:10):
forget he's not here anymore.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Nope, he's gone.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Justin Verlander not here anymore, gone. Martine Maldonado hasn't been
here gone. They're your leaders right there that I just mentioned, Well,
you still have Jose al Tuve. You still got Jordon Alvarez.
JOSEL Tuve kind of does things quiet in his own way.
We know that Jordon Alvarez is a quiet, gentle giant,
doesn't do a lot of talking. From from what we know,
(03:34):
I'm sure he has some kind of president and we
know he has a presidence in the Ashle's clubhouse.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Who's gonna be that next guy? Though?
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Well, we got some audio Joe, A spot of the
manager was on. Let me let me make sure I
get this correct here. It's Chandler Rome's new podcast, Chandler
Rome uh covering the astros beat for the Athletic. It's
Crush City Pod, Crush City Territory, the Krush City Pod.
He was all Chandler Roam, this is, uh, Joe, a
(04:01):
spot of talking about the leadership role.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Who's going to be that player that you pick? He's
going to have? Like I could see, who's like you
pick to click? And for me is for me? Is
you know I told the person Jeremy Pena because I
think he's the next guy that I also see stepping
up and being kind of the vocal leader in our club.
You know, he's that guy that when we are doing
(04:27):
our meetings and were walking around the clubhouse. He's he's
he wants to be the guy say, you know, but
but he sees the breakmans and he sees the other
guys's being there longer. But I think if you know,
not if Briakman does not return, I could see Jeremy
being a little bit more like, you know, hey, maybe
(04:48):
we could we try to do this because he's done it.
But I think you could probably see him kind of
taking that next step forward in that leadership of a
role in the clubhouse and be phenomenal. You know, that
shortstop middling fielder usually are the ones who are have
that that personality and a zene there. So I could
(05:08):
see him being that dude this year where he's having
a monster year on the field. And also we're talking
about having conversations about you know, you know, conversation he's
had with some of the players are standing up and
having like a little team meeting, you know. So I
could see Jeremy Bean being that guy.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
All right, that's a manager. Joe spot on the Crush
City pod with Chandler Rome and Tyler Stafford talking about
Jeremy Pania could be that next guy to be the
vocal leader and everything we know about Jeremy Pinia had
a unbelievable rookie season in the playoffs, they won the
World Series that year he won, He's won a Gold Glove.
(05:47):
He was ALCS MVP in twenty twenty two. He was
a World Series MVP in twenty twenty two his rookie year.
During the regular season, let's see, he hit two fifty
three seven fifteen ops. Twenty twenty three he hit two
sixty three with a seven five ops. And in this
past season two sixty six of the seven oh one ops.
(06:09):
So he's basically been a two sixty hitter in his
career so far. Yeah, going into year four, let's see
the strikeout numbers have got to come down. He strikes
strikes out around one hundred and twenty times a year.
On base, probably needs to go up a tick. I
(06:31):
would say, walk right down. He only walks about twenty
five times a year. So he's a free swinger. So
I'm sure, I'm sure he's gonna make some adjustments. You
saw the adjustments mechanically this past season, less hand movement
in the box. It looked like it kind of helped
out a bit pitch selections still a little bit uh
suspect if you will, chasing those sliders on the outer half.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
But it was better. It was a little bit better.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
But yeah, if you're gonna if he's gonna be the
guy to step up, not just in the club, but
you're also gonna need production from him because yeah, on
the field, because you are definitely losing production from Alex Bregman,
even though Alex Bregman, you know, notoriously takes a couple
of months to really get going. I'm excited to see
uh Esak Perettis and what his role is going to be,
(07:17):
especially with the short porch to left. Obviously, Krishia Walker
is a is a signing that's really kind of underrated
throughout the league. Gold glove type first baseman can bang
drop bombs hopefully with that short porch and left as well.
But yeah, there's definitely gonna be some leadership that's gonna
someone's gonna have to step up into that role. And
you just heard it from the manager, Joe Spot himself.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
So I would hope, yeah, I would hope for I
feel like he's fit for it.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
I would think so, man, I would think he's your
and if not, you grow into the role, right exactly. Yes,
I think that's a very good point. You have to
grow into it, and we've seen it he's at times.
Last year the defense was a little suspect as well.
When Shawn and I talked to him at at Astro's FanFest,
he was He was way different than what I remember
(08:04):
because we had interviewed him the year prior. The year prior,
more close to the vest stereotypical coaches talk, you know,
like didn't really light and lighten up very much, didn't
kind of joke around with us. And in this past
season or I'm sorry, just a couple of weeks ago
at Ashal's FanFest, he was laughing, making jokes with us,
talking about uh Bregman calling him at two o'clock in
the morning, mentioned it now, Tuve, I mean just kind
(08:26):
of being a guys guy.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah, I got it. Yeah, lighting up big dogs.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Poorly's got a girlfriend, now, yeah, maybe maybe you have
to the roster. He selected his lead off hit or
as his uh as the one to be be as Jack. Yeah. Yeah,
good for Jeremy Payana. So we'll see, man, we'll see.
I just can't believe that it's I just can't believe
it's February eleventh and Alex Bregman is still free agent.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
I told y'all, what was your date? I said, the
twenty fifth, Yeah, but I went into March. Mine the March,
March third. We're rolling, We're in the second.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Shawn's is done. Yeah, I think his was. His was
last Friday. His was the seventh, Yours was the what
the twenty fifth?
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Okay? Mine was the third?
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Okay, okay, March third, that's the first Monday in March.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
So we'll see, dude. The way it's rolling, man, I
don't know. I think who knows?
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Man?
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Who knows? At this point? Yeah, just crazy.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
February eleventh, th Alex Bregman is still a free agent.
Let's get to break seven one three, two point two five,
seven ninety is the number to join. We're gonna continue
to talk to Astros Baseball. The pitching you have. Do
you have some concerns with the pitching staff? Got a
couple guys that are gonna be coming back from injury
but won't be ready at the beginning of the season.
Who's the name that we could potentially see step up
(09:47):
and get into the rotation? Also coming up in the
nine o'clock hour, we got some Texans news and notes.
Looks like they could be rumored to try and go
get a wide receiver via trade or free agent. Who
could that be? That's coming up in the nine clock hour.
Let's continue to talk Astras next right here on The
Shawn Salisbury Show
