With spring training rolling on yesterday afternoon the Astros took on the Mets for a second time now, in which they were victorious in with a final score of 8-5 down in West Palm. One name who had themselves a marvelous afternoon yesterday was none other than minor league prospect Cam Smith. The third baseman had a phenomenal game following with two hits, two home runs, and three RBI's all helping the Astros close out the game with a win. Noting Cam's age and infancy in the league and after his game yesterday, lots of chatter has begun in regards to the young third basemen getting a shot at the big leagues. Sean and Brian along with a few listeners discuss possibilities as to when can we expect young prospects like Cam to make the big leagues and what may be the reason why there tends to be prolonged signings from the pharm system.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Brad, we appreciate you holding what's up buddy.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
You know, I'm kind of scratching my head on this
Aeronauto and they're interested.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
Again.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
The main thing, who do you want to give up
for a declining athlete? Or he might have just had
a bad year. I don't know, but he is thirty
four I think thirty three or thirty four, so that's
not any advantage. But who would you I sure wouldn't
give up half of the top thirty prospects. I give

(00:34):
him maybe a couple of single A players you've never
heard of.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
So, Brad, the thing about the Aeronaudo trade, if it
goes through, if this actually happens, as we discussed this
a couple of days ago on Monday, is if you
are going to try to go get Aeronado, there's a
lot of money attached to it, so you can't give
up prospects. You're going to have to give up guys
that are on the active roster so you can move
around some money. So I don't even think it'd be

(00:59):
a single a double late trip. I don't think any prospects.
I would think it's going to be a guy like
Raffael Montero, and somebody else, you know what I mean,
Because there's money that's got to be moved around, because
Aeronato's making quite a bit. If you go and do it,
I don't know. We'll see though.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah. And then all of a sudden you got cam
Smith that like blew me away, and who's to say
he doesn't continue this. You can't put that guy in
the minors. I mean, you already got rid of Bregman.
Well he got rid of himself, and then you you
traded the other guy for cam Smith. Hey, you've already

(01:33):
passed that. Now it's time to move on with some
of these youngsters. You got Descenzo, you got cam Smith,
you got Shay Wickham, They're all ready to take a spot.
I think you just can't. I think Aeronatti's is just
going to mess it up. They didn't learn their lesson
with that first baseman that they are still playing his

(01:55):
last year of a twenty million that's not even made
in baseball anymore. So I'm thinking you've already passed all
these who cares go with these youngsters, and like, like
I was telling you again, cam Smith, what if he
keeps doing this? You can't keep you can't I mean,
I remember when Bragman first came up. I think he

(02:17):
got like a like a cup of coffee in the
minor leagues. He was shot right up to the major leagues.
So that's why I think I would keep cam Smith
on the roster. And if he takes somebody's spot, maybe
he takes the right field and then you put one
of that right field that they got into centerfield, and
so somebody's going to be sitting on the bench.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, it just opens your bench. Great, stet Brat got
to run a break. Great. Yeah, I will say this.
It's it's one thing I've been It's been on my
mind for a while. I keep just you know, it's
a note that I don't I don't talk about enough,
but need to. And it hit me again it needs
to be repeated in life. Think about in business and

(02:59):
everything we whether you turn on your TV, sports or reporters,
or in any walk life, you hear the phrase a
young infuse, young talent. We're not afraid to put young people,
whether it's whether it's a an influencer, whether it's a
you know, any job. Right, We're throwing young people into
stuff all the time, all the time. We got people

(03:22):
competing in the Olympics at eighteen years old, at sixteen,
at fourteen? Why are we so afraid when they get
to the pros to promote a young person right now?
I don't know how are we afraid they can't handle it?
But I get it. But there's a part of me
that the more shelter you put around, protecting them is
one thing, sheltering them is another. I don't think that helps.
It's just weird to me. Baseball is the one way,

(03:44):
and I know sometimes, well, if you'd have waited, maybe
the guy woud be better. I know there are stories like that,
where there's also the great stories that we waited too
long to promote a guy. We listen in this building,
we bring in a guy like Tripoli. Imagine I'm just
gonna use him as an example. Imagine if if I'd
have said when you two came in, if I'd have said, yeah,

(04:04):
Brian hasn't done this very long. He's new at it.
You know you've been doing I'm saying you weren't. You
hadn't been doing it fifteen years. She's too young to right.
You've been all that you were in the gas oil
and gas is bring you in it's like, eh, not
yet would have been a huge mistake because this has
been the best partner I've ever had, period, and I've
had a lot of good ones, and I've had more
love for this in my life. Imagine if Win Triple

(04:25):
E when we interviewed him, yeah, and said too young,
let's let him seizing himself on a show that's not
morning drive in one of the big markets in the country,
what we'd have missed out on.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Why is it that we don't do that in baseball
because we're afraid that, well, it's money's invested all that. Yeah,
but you find out great things and then the tough
minded ones will learn through their mistakes. That's the growth part.
I think we shelter minor league players too much. If
there's room, let them, let it rip. Let's say, yeah,
let's go, let's discuss that. I think that's a good

(04:59):
good top to discuss next right here on Sports Talk
