With spring training coursing on into the weekend the Astros continue to roll out their new talent, gauging the potential they may have rolling into the start of the season. With everyone showcasing their offseason pickups hopefully good enough to stay on the big league's rosters, players followed with new names arriving on the scene have all been getting reps in preparation for possible call-ups. Assessing the Astros spring training and the production seen thus far in their games, the organization seems to be left quite alright in regards to ushering into a new era following the departure of a few veterans leaving the clubhouse this offseason. With the release of the American and National League power rankings, Sean and Brian take a moment discussing rather than how the team may look on paper and what we've seen so far, can the Astros be considered a power ranking team in the American League this year?

Speaker 1 (00:01):
This Sean Salisbury Show continues to continue. Just a couple
of games left for Kelvin Samson and that squad.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
UH.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Latest, I saw that they were up to number four
in the rankings, and you talked about ranking Sean Power
Rankings American League. Are the Astros a top five power
ranked team in your opinion?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
That's what I asked. All right, let's go through it.
You've got the you got the stand, you got the
like the division rosters there, so we don't have to
sit there and think about each one. All right, So
starting out in the East, you got let's start Yankees.
When I put the Yankees ahead of the Astros today,
and I'm talking about how it's gonna end up today
going in where they're ranked, right, Yeah, the answer first

(00:45):
off on that is Yankees.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
You would take the Yankees ahead of the Astros right now?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Correct?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah? Boston, man, there's that had a sneaky off season.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
I feel like I feel for me the Red Sox
and the the UH Astros. It's six and one half
dozen and the other I think there that's a pretty
equal match. I can see them both battling for a
playoff spot, right Yeah. Toronto, they're just to big, a
bunch of a bunch of big underachievers, although they're rossiest
album but pretty good, right, underachieved. Always Tampa is always

(01:14):
going to hang around. Yeah, you know, they're just always healthy.
Pitching staff always keeps and they're well managed for the
most part. And then who am I missing in the
Baltimore that they're that's a I think Baltimore is better
than Boston. And you a bunch of frat guys that
are really good players. Yeah, the Sigma News that are
really that are just really that's exactly right. So there's

(01:35):
two and a tie. I mean, the Red Sox you
could take the Red Sox, you could take the Astros, right.
I still like the Astros pitching staff, frontline when healthy,
but the Red Sox grind and their bats are pretty good. Yeah,
you know they can come. So either way, we wouldn't
have this conversation if you're talking about veterans with Tucker
and Bregman. But things have changed and maybe the averages

(01:57):
and the I know one thing, the production first base
is going to be way up. So there's that now
in Cleveland still ahead, right, Uh, they over they seem
to overachieved, but look the good pitching staff and Roma
is a top ten player in the league. Yeah, so
similar the Willans White Sox. The the AL Central is
not bad. No, it's deep, but it's not dominant. Does

(02:19):
that make sense?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Detroit, Kansas City, Cleveland, those are your three front runners
and division Minnesota respect.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
On Detroit right, and then out west. Yeah, there's two
or three t Seattle. So the truth is they're probably
hovering around between five and seven power rankings. They tied
for fifth with two other teams like Boston and Cleveland. Right. Yeah,
I think Detroit's slide advantage because the pitching, i mean
left handed dominant there and Hinch is doing a good job.

(02:47):
But I would put the Astros in Detroit fairly similar.
I'm well, Minnesota's got some good moments, they're.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Not the Astros.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
No, So you start to think about power rankings going in,
and you can probably lump through three games to decide
between Texas, Seattle, and the Astros. All things being equal,
When the season's done, I'll be shocked if any of
those three teams are like eight games out of the
teams in first place. So point is, I think we
know who the biggest dogs are. Put it this way,

(03:15):
every year going in, we've always said the big dogs,
astros are one or two or three. This year they're
probably going in a little less of the big dog.
But maybe just maybe the fact that they don't have
to live up to it, you know, that constant pressure
of being the dominant overwhelming may serve them well. Why
they may have a chance to actually take a deep
breath and not have to live up to expect it.

(03:36):
Although you place expectations on yourself, but I'm talking about
the expected.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Oh, this is a ninety five win team. This is
a ninety four win team.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
They're a division of their World Series World Series because
they're not getting as much. Oh, they're a World Series team.
This is now shifted down to this is a battling
for a playoff team. Now, a month from now, we
may be saying this team started off twenty five or
two months from now twenty five and eight. Man, look
at how good they're doing. These young players and new
players came in and they're kicking ass. So but on
paper right now you wouldn't have him in the top three.

(04:03):
But from four to seven, yeah, I think that's probably
where it is, right Yeah, And expectations that I think
nationally are lowered a little bit. That doesn't mean that
they're building their lower but that's so sometimes that takes
a little pressure off that you can be free swingers.
And right now, quite frankly, there's gonna be a lot
of people that question, well, did they get enough? Well,
we know the young guys how good they can be,
but nationally, the narrative is going to be, did they

(04:24):
take a step back in the spring?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
I mean in the off season because they lost, well,
you lost two all stars, that's pretty much the way
it is.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, and you lost excuse me, a five tool player
in Kyle Tucker. Yeah, obviously Alex Bregman. But also you
say Kakuchi is not a part of.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
The staff, and Presley and Kokuchi gone, and they're not
getting much run or mentioned about being here Nash. It's like, oh,
but those are regardless of what we say. Presley was pretty good, yeah,
and Kokuchi was off the charts.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
So and that's an eight what an angel's advantage? Right,
So we'll see, But that that's where it sits now.
They're expectations, but the nationally lowered a little bit. That
doesn't mean that our expectations have to you know, they've
spoiled it to the point where we expect them to
win the division. Although this year it's gonna be like
it is I guess every year, but it's gonna be you.
You you can't take a week off, nope, during the

(05:16):
season this year, because if you do, you'll be down
three games.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
You can't. You can't lose series to lesser teams.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Seat the teams you have to beat or you're supposed
to be right what I say always Birdie the.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Part five five? Yeah, gotcha right, that's exactly right. Tell
the Yankees that's a par three.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
You hope to win some sometimes you're gonna bow get
sometimes you're gonna take a double and it may decide
the division or who goes the World Series. But you
got a Birdie the par five. You can't lose series
to Oakland. You can't not lose series to teams that
you just can't. You absolutely can't, because at the end
of the season you look back and say, man, remember
those five games we lost. The three teams that are

(05:53):
did won sixty five games, and it happens. But you
can't when you're gonna be in a tight race. You
got a fifteen game if you're the Dodgers, you can
afford to Tobogia Part three. You can't afford to do
that here, No, you can't. You just don't have that luxury.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Yeah, you saw the effect last year and went from
potentially being the two seed and you dropped into the
wild Card series and then you got beat.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
And you know what you better do aside from Berdie,
you better make you better hit the green two on
part five and mixing eagles along the way as well,
beating the Yankees and the Yankees team that's exactly right.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, taking three out of four, sweeping guys, Yeah, the
good ones. Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
On the road right there in a hostile environment, no question.
