Speaker 2 (00:11):
Like a punch to that face.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
You got a little bit of breaking news here, Sean.
We were talking about Derek Stingley Junior. Well, it sounds
like David Mullagetta and the crew over there at Athletes First,
so they might have been listening and saying, oh, yeah, well, hey,
we got something for you. Adam Schefter, Texans all Pro
Derek Stingley Junior agreeing to a three year, ninety million
dollar extension. Eighty nine of that is guaranteed. He is

(00:38):
the highest paid defensive back in NFL history. As Adam
Schefter throws out, the cornerback market has now been completely reset.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Yeah. Well, and look like we said, not going to
get the forty, but thirty is about right. You're not
paying your corner forty. But I can tell you this,
there's a reason why he's getting paid that because he
can make a case that he was as good as
we had in the league last your disposition, and we
knew coming in if he just stayed healthy when Lovey
Smith drafted him, that went went well. When Lovey was
a head coach, and they made that pick that if

(01:10):
he just stayed healthy, that you had a monster at corner,
and they got him. Listen, if you're going to guarantee
eighty nine guarantee ninety I mean, well, I don't know
if that means you don't want to guarantee at all
because it makes it tough on others pro I mean
other teams. Ninety million and eighty nine of it's guaranteed.
What's the other million four? I mean, I guess you

(01:34):
can wipe your rear in because you got enough money
with it if you'd like. But eighty nine million guaranteed,
which means no matter what he'd getting paid. So good
on him. Great performance last year. I think their secondary
is as good a young secondary as there is in
a league. They've added physicality and attitude to it in
the back end. They their edge rushers can play with anybody.

(01:56):
Their linebackers run, they've got a nasty attitude. If they're
not a top five defense in the league this year,
I will be shocked. And I'm not just talking about yards,
I'm talking about points. As long as our offense doesn't
put him in position to give the other team short fields. Rightfully,
so earned it, deserves it, and he's got to be
really really happy this morning. I would imagine that he
can pay his bills. So I think he's gonna be okay.

(02:18):
I was gonna see him and good on the franchise
for doing this. I think that he'll be all right.
And you're right too.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
I mean, what he's got with Kamario Laster on the
other side from him, you had CJ. Gardner Johnson, You've
got Caylen Bullock back there, Jimmy Ward gonna be back
with this team, and then obviously Jalen Petrie is kind
of a little bit of a hybrid the star position,
playing a little bit more kind of like a linebacker,
but still being counted on in coverage situation.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
And they can count on him to cover. I mean,
Bullock has become a great ballhawk in the back end.
And the truth is, as you know, CJ was a
he could play on the slot and nickel when he
was in New Orleans as well. I mean he's been
able to do both. So you get versatile safeties that
can cover if necessary, so you don't have the substitute
all the time, and veteran leadership that gives you you

(03:05):
know because a lot of times these days, in truth,
you're not playing with three linebackers. You're playing with five dbs,
and at times in a dime package, you're playing with
six dbs, right, and you hope that those dbs are
either physical or have safety presence, that know how to tackle,
that can also cover. That's it. So if you have
four receivers, you're in a good you're pretty good. Three
receivers you got to have. It's under rate. We don't

(03:26):
talk about it enough across the country that it's no
longer just two. You better have three good guys. And
you know what, your slot guy, the guy who's a
nickel coverage guy, quite frankly, has a tougher job than
the guys on the edge because the crossers and the
stuff moving across the middle field. You can pin your
guy to the edges right and play outside the numbers.

(03:47):
Those guys inside that's a tough job, and they know
how versatile those guys have to be. And then you
get a corner who you can say, follow their best
player if necessary, if you're going to travel with him.
If not, you don't really need to on this team
because lassters a year or two away from us saying, damn,
they may have the best corner combo in the league.
They may have it now, well, really good.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
He showed it. He showed a lot of really good
things this year. And you know it's kind of gone.
Are the days of you're a boundary Oh, you're a
field guy. I mean it's that's.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
In college you get a boundary corner that's physically right
with the hash marks, well, the hash marks close together.
In the NFL, you're one hundred percent correct that I
need you to be be able to do it all.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, there's there's no longer a base three four or
anything like that. Now it's pretty much just all right,
you know, Nickel, that's your base defense right there. That's
pretty much the way the league.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Playots the times that dimes even more base than your
regular because people are playing four wides and empty in
the backfield on a regular basis. Anyway, you've got to
have guys that can run and cover but also can
get nosy in the run game. It's important.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah, not not as much twelve personnel anymore.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Now. If Harball has his way, there will be. He
has his way, there will be, and he'll bring it
back the forty nine ers don't mind getting it once
in a while. But the truth of the matter is
you've got to have those perimeter guys, and you've got
to have corners and safeties that can now cover and
then ball hawking safety and Bullock has proved that right
now as far as young goes, when it comes to
free safeties young players, he's as good as we have

(05:09):
in a league at that position.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah, I wanted to throw out that bit of news.
So again, if you weren't with us at the beginning,
Derek Stingley in the Texans in agreement on a three
year ninety million dollar contract extension. Eighty nine of that
guarantee thirty million base value per season. He is now
the highest paid defensive back in NFL history, and this
is reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN. All right, we'll

(05:32):
get back into us some astros also, we've in some
rockets you of age, and let you know how they
finish up there at TPC Sawgrass. All of that here
as we close up the eight o'clock hour here on
the Sean Salisbury Show, Dan Matthews, Shawn Salisbury, Triple, Emmanuel Elmore,
