Just about concluding their 6 game homestand and teeing off their series against the Kansas City Royals, the Astros fall short in yesterday's series opener rallying back late in the 7th & 8th inning following a final of 7-5. With Ryan Gusto on the mound for the Astros' and stretching the bullpen a bit yesterday, Sean and Dan share a few things they've noted from yesterdays game mixed with a few things they saw the Astros do better in comparison to what they've done recently following past games and series.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boy, you're back.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
This is the Sean Salisbury show.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
You beat at it. Taylor Scott Bennett SUSA. That guy's
been quietly really good for this team.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
So that bullpen's been, aside from a few gaffes, has
been pretty damn impressive. For sure, they've starting pitching has
been impressive too, But this has been the strength of
the team. So I'm highly underrated. When you look at
across the board, it doesn't get talked about enough how
lights out they've been.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
But wouldn't it be nice to be able to have
a show like six fifty two here on a Tuesday
if last night the Astros came back and won eight
to seven, where you say, man, you know what, bullpen
they were great, But boy, those bats really stepped up. Man.
I mean they those late innings, the bottom of the order,
guys getting it going, and they they were the reason
that you won this game. It would be nice to like,

(00:52):
aside from the Minnesota finale this year, I can't think
of any other time that I've said that about the
team where you say, you know what, the bats willed
this team to win like they they stepped up like
It's so many times we talk about how the pitching
stepped up, and the pitching was great. I love having that,
trust me, it's much better than the alternative. But I mean,

(01:13):
there's just it's always so many times where one side
leaves a little bit left to be desired. And it
hadn't been the pitching very much this year.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
No, it hasn't. And when it comes to the hitting
part of it, I feel like it's been groundhog Day
for a while, leading back to last year, where it's
similar conversation left runners in the scoring position, didn't close
it out, pitching doing a great job hanging in like
kind of similar to last year of Blanco got rolling

(01:42):
boom eight innings of two hit ball the other night.
Just at times when you need it right, so they are.
I guess it's nondescript at the plate right now? Does
that make sense? You know you'll get the pain is
playing a really good baseball. I'll twove a couple more hits.
You start to see the iron Da has come to life.
There's no doubt. The truth is from up and down.

(02:04):
Other than Painia, Jake Myers and Paratus have been your
most consistent guys that they're showing up box score wise
on a regular basis, they just are so yeah, and
it's been pitching. Put it this way, you're counting on pitching.
Starting pitching been solid. You got to you hope starting

(02:26):
pitching continues and gets healthy. But you know, at the
top of the order, it's it's pretty damn good. And
when you get bloc or you're really your fourth guy
when things are, when everything's normal, doing what he did
the other day, it's on the verge of spectacular. The bullpen,
it's almost like an offensive line that doesn't give up sacks.
We don't talk about them until they struggle. It's like, oh, yeah,

(02:48):
oh man, their top five offensive line in the league.
How can we ever talk about him well because people
love to talk about the negative part, not the positive.
We just got, Oh we just expected with this bullpen,
we've come to expect and that they're just going to
get it done. And then the hitting is the hope
right now, where at the hope phase of the hitting
where let's hope they get going again. Let's hope the

(03:09):
new guys contribute. Let's hope Jordan gets healthy. Let's hope
that Pained continues to be great in the lead off spot.
Let's hope Jake Myers. This is this out of body
experience at the plate continues. Let's hope that Christian Walker
continues to hit it hard and it falls the right way.
I mean, there's a lot of hope, but the problem
is hope doesn't sustain what you're looking for. Dan, And

(03:30):
that's five runs here, seven runs there, and nine runs there. Oh,
great job, relentless, six straight hits by a team, and
you know they'll get it. It'll happen. The question is
it's been the inconsistency of the play. That's not even
hard criticism, that's just pretty factual from last year. So
that's why it's a little bit of groundhog Day. But
there's one that you pretty much know every night it

(03:52):
feels like they're going to get it done. Bullpen, you
think the pitching starting pitching when the first two guys go,
I got a pretty good idea. And the second guy,
especially that ye're in the game. We said it last
week when he picked said, don't expect to score. If
you get three runs, be happy. And you're pitching staff
as to approp how many runs they get off Hunter
Brown zero, So you go in knowing if you score

(04:13):
three or four runs off him and when Fromber's going good,
you're in the game. But the chances are it's one
of those they're going six to seven innings and it's
going to be a late inning win or loss, depending
on who's swinging the bat so and Hunter Brown's been
on the fortune side of it this year and he
just dominates. So but it's that pitching staff, the bullpen,
which underrated, but like a good offensive line, you don't

(04:34):
talk about him when they're going good, only when they
blow a save or have one of those days. It's
the hitting. It's the inconsistency that drives you crazy because
this team was always built on one through seven or
eight being relentless and killing pitching staffs. We're not there yet.
It's just inconsistent. You look at it and say potential,
but we know what potential does. Potential will get a
coach fired if you're not careful. So they've got to

(04:57):
pick that part of it up then they will. But
when and how long does that run last?

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Yeah, definitely, And we can continue this conversation as we
get into the seven o'clock hour again seven one three, two,
one two five seven ninety Also to today on the
stakeout is this really something that you want to bring
to a game. We'll discuss all of that here as
we get into the seven o'clock hour here on the
Seawn Salisbury Show.
