Caller of the night: Anne issued a book to Sir Peter Snell

While talking about Sir Peter Snell (and his breaking of the mile world record by 0.1s at Cooks Gardens), Anne phoned to reminisce about the time she met Peter at a library.

At least, she WOULD have reminisced, if she could hear Marcus ask her questions about the encounter...

Now I have didn't go to Cook's Gardens, but I
actually worked up at the Auckland Central Library in nineteen
seventy five and issued a library book to Sir Peter Snell.
Goodness me, amazing.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Guy, How did that happen? What was the book?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Well? I am during my Christmas holidays, I got a
job holiday dril and working up at Auckland Central Library.
And this was actually the second year that i'd worked

(01:00):
up there, and they wanted extra people, so on registration
I was working up in the children's section and I
went down to registration and Sir Peter Snell came in
and I issued him a library book.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Well, now, of course he wouldn't have been Sir Peter
Snell then, was he?

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Was?

Speaker 2 (01:20):
He just Peter Snell?

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Yes? Do you remember what the claim to fame?

Speaker 2 (01:28):
That could be an hour long topic. Do you remember
what the book was?

Speaker 3 (01:31):
An amazing guy?

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Is that what the book was? What title was the
book that he got? And you issued him a book?
Do you remember what book?

Speaker 3 (01:48):
It was yes, yes, so, and actually when you said
he went to Taror, I actually used to go down
there for holidays. I had relatives who lived down there.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah, I think I think I've just asked you what
book he was giving. I was asking you what book
he was getting out of the library, and so Anne,
and can you hear me?

Speaker 3 (02:20):
So quite amazing really and can you hear me? Mm?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Anne? You say, and can you hear me talking to you? Yeah? Hi, Anne,
it's Marcus. How are you? What's happening? And I was
just asking what was the book that you issued to him?

Speaker 3 (02:41):
I can't remember. I can't remember what the name of
the book was, but I it was, you know it was.
It's something I've always remembered and muche special doing that something.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
You've always remembered us not remembering the book? Is that right?

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Do you do you remember what the book looked like? Yes?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
So, as I say, I can't remember that you know
what the name of the book was. But I followed
him right through until I saw and it's actually the
Woman's Weekly where I read that and on the radio
that he passed away.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
So he came up with a book, right, And you
don't know what the book was or what the book
looked like? Have I got that right?

Speaker 3 (03:21):
Is that right?

Speaker 2 (03:24):
You didn't? You don't don't remember what the book looked like?

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Hmmm, yes, so can you?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
And are you hearing what I'm saying? Are you hearing
what I'm saying? It's it feels like yeah. I've asked you,
do you remember what the book looked like?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yes, it's quite quite amazing.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
And did you have a conversation with him? What did
you say to him? And I've asked.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
I think it's good that you know you remember all
these things. Do you remember?

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Do you remember the conversation you had with him?

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (04:14):
And how did that go?

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Yes? Thank youious, Brigand.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Wow, there's a hard conversation for mine. What was I
missing out? Then? And she gone? Peter Steale comes up?
You think, well, what's the book? Right? Is it? How

(04:42):
to run Faster? Is it? I wasn't quite sure she
had the phone on delay or something was happening, but
she kept saying yes, like what she would hear me
because I won't say something. She'd say yes, Nisha turned
the volume down. The phone was just saying yes to
