Speaker 1 (00:00):
And now Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.
Hey friends, welcome another edition to Move the Sticks is
off and running here and for DJ.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
I am Red Lewis here with great Bucky Brooks, and
we are fired up as the rookie draft is coming
down to the wire, down to the end. We'll get
to that in today's episode. We'll get you our coordinator
of the week. But Bucky boy, the San Francisco forty
nine ers are a rolling on Monday night football.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
What's happening, brother?

Speaker 3 (00:31):
No, what's going on? Man?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Like?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
It's kind of crazy.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
You talk about the Monday night football game, Niners just
going up and down the field and until they put
the graphic up at one point, Red, I think it
was nineteen street droughts without a punt. Sixteen of those
ended in scores. I think ten of those were maybe
touchdowns and six field goals. It's really amazing to see
and I'm gonna save this. I think this is Kyle
Shanahan's best coaching job in terms of all that he

(00:55):
had to deal with with the injuries Bosa Warner, Rock
Purdy for a big part of the season, all sideline
George Kidle not being available, Brandon Aiyuk just going a
wall on and yet this team is sitting here with
a legitimate chance to be the number one steed in
the NFC. Is something that I don't think anybody could

(01:16):
have envisioned early in the year when they started getting
hit with the injuries.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Man, pretty dang impressive, I think.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
I mean, obviously, the offense always to a certain degree,
runs through Christian McCaffrey. Now, there was a time of
the year where he was, you know, touching the ball
thirty times a game. It felt like, you know, whether
that was you know, attempts in the run game or
targets and receptions in the pass game.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
He obviously still has scored two touchdowns in this game.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
But man, the downfield pass game from Brock Purty last
night and really these last couple of weeks that you
were kind of alluding to there, they're averaging almost seven
yards of play, you know, over four hundred and forty
yards total, and he's throwing the football with some real
like just I mean, this this is like the Brock

(02:02):
party before he got injured in the NFC Championship game
against Philly.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Yeah, you know, yes, the explosive efficiency that you're seeing
from the position. And one of the things that we've
always loved about the Shanahan system is it creates explosive
plays in the passing game, and it's very easy for
the quarterback to be able to get it done were
they able to run the football, the play action passing
that comes off of that, the big plays over the middle,

(02:26):
and you're seeing anybody in everybody.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
I su he's got more sightings.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
When we hadn't talked about him in years, all of
a sudden he showed us and he's making plays.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
He got other guys all over the PERIMETERSLN.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Jennings and Kendrick Born and yeah, I mean.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
They're able to kind of put it together with a
hodgepodge of players, and it's really a testament to what
Kyle Shanahan is.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Able to do on the whiteboard.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
I would say the same. The other thing.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Now, look like George Kittle got banged up in this game.
Obviously he missed a ton of time early with the hammy,
and now it sounded like it was an ankle.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
See, we'll see how that affects them.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
I Mean, this does feel like a team that cannot
afford to lose anybody you know cannot There are a
few teams that can afford to lose guys this time
of year. But like especially with where the forty nine
ers are from a baseline perspective in terms of season
inning injuries that they've already suffered, which brings me to
the defensive side of the ball. You said this might
be Kyle Shanahan's best coaching job. Is this Robert Sala's

(03:22):
best coaching job? Considering no Nick Bosa, no Fred Warner,
defense still playing at a pretty high level.

Speaker 4 (03:28):
Yeah, And I think people have to understand that you
have to judge the Niners differently based on what he's
he's had to switch. Before the Niners were what I
considered a shut him down defense, meaning they weren't trying
to concede yards. They were playing real tight coverage on
the outside, and even though it was zone, they were
trying to snuff people out. Now, with the injuries and
the young guys playing and the back us playing, they're

(03:49):
a little more bim but don't break, But they concentrate
on being.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Good in a few different areas.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
One can be great in the red zone and two
can we turn the opponent over when we get a chance. Now,
the turnovers a little more random when it comes to it,
but the red zone defense, that's where they're putting a
lot of their time and energy in terms of being
able to make it very very difficult for people to
get sevens and making them settle for threes.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
That's a great point too.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
And there are certain, you know, areas which they excelled
on Monday Night, and that was you know, with Jonathan
Taylor and kind of with Christian McCaffery. But Jonathan Taylor
has more long speed to me at this at this
point in their careers, Like, if you can avoid the
explosive runs like those game changing runs, you've kind of
won the day. Like he might get you know, eighty
seventy five, eighty yards, you know, whatever it is, because

(04:35):
they've got to keep handed in the football. I think
he ended up with he actually ended up with with
forty six on sixteen attempts in this one, but zero
explosive runs, zero.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Runs longer than ten yards in this game.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
That is a huge win, especially when you've got you know, look,
Philip Rivers, I think there's a ton of credit for
what he's done, but the fact is you'd rather at
this point, you'd rather, you know, rush Philip Rivers than
deal with Jonathan Taylor on the ground.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
And I think it was very difficult for the Niners
to prepare for the Coast because you just didn't know
what Philip Rivers is going to have, and so you
can load up Jonathan Taylor. And very early in the game,
Philip Rivers was dealing because you tried to bliss him.
He was able to find the checkdowns quickly the ball
came out of his hands. Then you try to sit
back in a sof zone and he was killing you
underneath with the check downs and the underneath throws to

(05:23):
catch and run things.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
And it took a while for the Niners took around them.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
It really took a cool I mean the first half
going into the third quarter before they were able to
kind of get him under wraps. But the Niners are
sitting pretty because they can control their own destiny. They
have the Chicago Bears on tap, and then I think
they finished with the Seahawks.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Man, they went both those games.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
Right, They're going to be the number one seed and
everyone's going to have to come through Levi Stadium, which
is kind of Bananzaz.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
The thing I know, it's been a terrific run, certainly
for the San Francisco forty nine ers. And if we
are are just assessing exactly where they are, I was
trying to get a sense when for the rest of
their schedule. So let me just pulling that up here

(06:10):
real quickly. The rest of their schedule finishes with the Bears.
That's going to be a Hecko matchup right three days
after Christmas, So Bears Niners. That'll be in Santa Clara
and then they and then the season finales against Seattle
and who knows where where that takes them right at
the end of this thing. So there's there's some you know,
some possibilities out there as you're mentioning here with the

(06:33):
forty nine ers, that man, that's that's pretty big time.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Now on the.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Flip side, let's get to the Colts side of things here. Look,
they're they're not eliminated mathematically, but it's going to be
pretty tough. They've now lost five straight, six of their
last seven. They would be just the sixth team since
the merger to start seven and one and ultimately missed
the playoffs. Like, think about that, that's that's not and look,

(06:58):
that's what happens, you know. Unfortunately, the Colts have been
here before with you know, starting quarterback injuries. But that's
a tough spot to be in.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Yes, justified to be in.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
And I think what people have to understand is their
schedule was so backloaded. All the heavy hitters on the
schedule were in secession right down the last half of
the season, and that coincided with Daniel Jones getting hurt. First,
getting banged up, you know, with the broken fibia. I
think that's what he had, and then eventually he pops
his achille.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Got cracked fibula, and then yeah, and then the achilles went.

Speaker 4 (07:29):
So he was compromised for a couple of weeks before
he was eventually lost for the season.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
And then you played with Riley Leonard.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
He has to come out, and then you bring Philip
Rivers off the bench, and that's just hard to navigate
the schedule that they were tasked with.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
That's it, man.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
I think Shane Steich and lou Ana Rumo, I know
there's gonna be a lot of talk about whether those
guys should go, but I just see this team as
being a really good team. They've just been snaked bit,
and I don't know if switching the people makes it better.
I just think it's unfortunate that they're having to deal
with that, and I know one no one wants to
hear it. But this team is a really good team.

(08:05):
You saw that last night in spite of the injuries
and a forty four year quarterback getting off the couch.
I just don't know what turnover changes. But they have
a quarterback situation with Daniel Jones Anthony Richison, and they
have Philip Rivers like they have a quarterback the limit.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
They have to figure that position out.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
So if you are Colt's ownership, you know what which
look Obviously you know it's similar but not the same
rights as when Jim was there. Obviously his daughter's you know,
stepping into a bigger role here. But are you comfortable

(08:43):
with what you saw from Shanstiken and Daniel Jones to
feel good enough to leave that as this is the
way we want to roll, especially coming off the Achilles
right and knowing that it was in a limited sample
size and as before the competition was really starting to
ratchet up as you're talking about here, Like from an

(09:04):
ownership perspective, are you feeling comfortable enough to let that
stay his status quo moving forward.

Speaker 4 (09:10):
I think you have to be given the landscape of
the quarterbacks, what else is out there?

Speaker 3 (09:16):
Right? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (09:16):
I mean when you look at it, Daniel Jones is
probably the best option on the free agent market because
remember people are talking about Mac Jones.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Mack Jones has another year.

Speaker 4 (09:24):
On his deals, a one year deal for Daniel Yeah,
so you have to trade for Mac Jones. And then
if you think of the other options and possibilities, none
of them match up to Daniel Jones, who knows your system,
perform well in your system, you got it. And then
in the draft, I mean, let's be honest right now,
and looking at the twenty six quarterback class, it's Fernando

(09:44):
Mendoza and a lot of questions like, it's one quarterback
that we can legitimately talk about being in the class.
The rest of the guys are not franchise changers or savers.
To me, this speaks to, hey, man, we need to
run it back with Daniel Jones and see if we
can find that answer while we have him in to.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
So I think that's that's a tough spot to be
in because look, I think you know, this thing goes
forward the way it was trending, and you're like, man,
this is this is great. Well, you know, whether we
got a franchise Daniel Jones, you know, just to get
him for this next year, figure out a long term
deal that sort of thing, or let it play out
for another year if if you're really curious, because you
certainly could, you know, although that's never the way that

(10:25):
these players want to attack this thing.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
Now.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
The injury also a part of it. It's it's just
a cloudy spot to be in and they're too good
to be in the market for Fernando Mendoza. Uh, you're
gonna be long gone by the time the Colts come
on the clock most likely, you know, if especially if
if it's a supply and demand issue where there's a
bunch of teams that want a quarterback and he's really
the only one that fits the bill at the time,

(10:50):
then yeah, so they would. Yeah, yeah, so it made
there may only be one team that gets a shot,
you know, and and right now as a as a
pretty good race between the Giants and the Raiders for
that one spot. So we'll kind of see where that
ends up. But yeah, okay, so that's where the colts

(11:11):
in the forty nine ers are. So we will put
a bow on Week sixteen. In the NFL, we are
down to the final two weeks, Week seventeen. In Week eighteen,
will get Christmas Day games coming up here this week,
so a lot to look forward to on a couple
of days of football here in Week seventeen.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
Okay, let's jump into the rookie draft.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Another good week for Bucky Brooks, who is making a
serious push down the stretch here, getting wins in the
receiver category with tter Roa McMillan just over nineteen fantasy
points and in the running back position just over Omrion Hampton.
I keep getting screwed here, okays a second time, and
I've had a guy that is not playing, that got

(11:54):
hurt or whatever and was not available and just gives
me a big old goose egg. Woody Marks is questionable.
I got no I got no help from Gavin on
this front to be like, hey, you want to substitute
a running back because I went with Jawar Jordan on
my actual fantasy team. I ended up, you know, having
a decent day. Wouldn't have it wouldn't have surpassed Omaron Hampton,

(12:14):
but would have would have beat DJ out and snuck
an extra point in there. Uh. Anyway, that's where we're
at there. I did get the win for Harold Fannin
at nearly twenty points.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Actually the high scorer of the day for Russie cit.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
Yeah, it's he's the new Tyler Warren, especially with Shador
Sanders at quarterback. So that's where that I got three points.
Bucky ends up with seven DJ two, So that brings
our race. At this point. I am still in first,
but by a tight margin sixty nine points, followed by
Bucky at sixty five. DJ way down there at fifty
eight points. Oh looky, yeah, look at you.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
Let's go. Let's go. Okay.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
So that's where the standings are for this past week.
Let's jump into what things will look like this week
for the week seventeen edition. Bucky is the first pick.
I had the second pick. DJ's in the three hole,
so he'll have back to back picks at three and four,
and then we'll kind of go back around and I'll
come come back in and then Bucky o' up back
to back picks on the on the second half, So

(13:17):
you have the first pick, My friend, is there a
place that you want to go?

Speaker 4 (13:22):
Man, this is a tough one because man number one
overall pick has a lot of pressure on it. But yeah,
given the guy was a high score last week, I
think we have to go with Harrol Finn and Junior.
In the matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, I'm just thinking.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
She do her.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
He's only found one guy that he can depend on,
and so forty four as they got and red I have.
You know, they're handing them the ball a little four
back leaning to his pass as a running back lett
him touch the ball in the ball line.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
So I like that Harrold Fan Junior.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Yeah, I try to just lock up you know, a
three points right there, So no need for me to
jump in on tight ends. I'll wait on that, I think.
So I'll about my picking the litter, the running backs
and the uh and the receivers, and there's really only
been you know, Tedo McMillan has been like the receiver
as of late. And it's a tough matchup though this

(14:11):
week for the Panthers, they're gonna be sitting here playing
the Seattle Seahawks and they're doing it. Is that when
you're in Seattle. I no, but it's in Charlotte. Whoknakooa
went off against the Seahawks, that's for sure, Dash.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
Or do I go with the running backs here?

Speaker 2 (14:29):
I feel like there's probably Judkins got hurt a little bit,
Traveon Henderson got hurt and he went out and did
not return. So there's like, I feel like there's less
running there's less running backs now, and the Chargers are
going up against the Texans defense.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Goodness gracious, this is this is a difficult choice.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
I think I'm gonna stick with Tetoap McMillan right there.
So I'm gonna take the first receiver off the board
and go TETROA McMillan for the Carolina Panthers against the
Seattle Seahawks.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
That means DJ. I get to make two picks.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
For DJ. I'm gonna give him Omari and Hampton, so
I'll give him. I'll give him running back one for
his Chargers right there, and then I got to give
him another pick here. I'm gonna give him a Mecca Buka,
keep him with the receiver he had last week. So
we'll go back to Buka. And so now it is

(15:26):
back to me. So I'm gonna make another selection and
I'm gonna take r J. Harvey running back to le Bron.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Oh what are we doing? R J Harvey? Sorry? Yeah,
watch Sean Payton. Just give it to him.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
Just give it to him.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
I know.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
I mean, like just like he's Alvin Kamar all over again.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Yeah. Oh man, that's that's tough. So now that leaves me,
uh running back wise.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Yeah, you need a running back and you need a receiver.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
You have to.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
I'm gonna take Aston Gent because he had a big game.
Actually thought that somebody had him in the draft. Now
at wide receiver, okay, we're still because you took T
Mac right, I took T Mac. Yeah, you took T
Mac and Mecca Buka is gone. Dang it, who's left?
Who's left out there?

Speaker 2 (16:19):
The third receiver has been so hard this year, so
I mean it's good. It's a good exercise. So in
terms of receiving yards, yeah, it's it's Abuka and Teterol
McMillan are both up there at the top. They're obviously
off the board. The next receiver is Luther Burdon with
four hundred and seventy nine yards and he's got thirty
six catches. Jayden Higgins is getting closer. L K o'mannor

(16:42):
you know, is kind of just out there.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
They never know.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
I think I have to go with the Bears just because, like,
and you know, the fun thing in watching that game
on Saturday, he's around. But they found DJ Moore and
I didn't like that because I like when DJ Moore
is not found because the ball goes in other areas.
But let's let's take our chance with Luther Burnon going.
They need this to got to get this this dub.
They're playing the Niners, so maybe there's more to go around.

(17:05):
So yeah, with a bird a.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Yeah, and you know that the tight end, the third
tight end has gotten increasingly more. Oh wait, I need
to give DJ a tight end too, but he's last,
So I've got my choice for the second tight end,
which we've kind of been on the Colston Loveland train here.
Tyler Warren has not caught more than three balls in
a game since week twelve. It's been three catches, two catches,
three catches, three catches. So you're seeing the Daniel Jones

(17:31):
effect there. Now he's been targeted, you know, six times,
six times, eight times. That's been a little bit, you know,
just finding some consistency with both Ryley Leonard and Philip
Rivers has been difficult for Warren.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
I think I got to go with Colston Loveland.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
Here I liked it, though I liked it.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Yeah, I think I got to go Colston Loveland, and
I think I will do that. And I guess that
leaves for DJ. Do we want to give DJ Gadsden
or when give him Tyler Warren?

Speaker 4 (18:03):
Well, if Riley Lennard plays, I would be more likely
to give him Tyler Warren.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
But I just don't know.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
We don't know.

Speaker 4 (18:09):
Yeah, Randy guess, and they would give him two charges.
He'll probably be mad about having two charges on the team.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
Okay, all right, let's give him Tyler Warren.

Speaker 3 (18:18):
You can't get playing his first round pick, my first
round pick.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Yeah, he was number He was the number one pick
of the draft for like the first eight weeks of
the season. So DJ finishes with a Buca, Hampton, Warren, Bucky.
You end up with uh fannin genty and you went
with Burden, and then I closed it out with Harvey T.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Mac and Loveland. There we go.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
Okay, so the picks are in. It's getting close, and
we got two weeks left. Week eight team is going
to be even more difficult dealing with teams you know,
resting plaid.

Speaker 1 (18:59):
We don't know.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
I hate, I hate doing the final week of the
regular season, but we'll see. This is where we're at
right now. Okay, when we come back, we'll.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
Talk about our Coordinator of the week. Quick break here
and move the sticks.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
All right back here with you time for Hot or
Not brought to you by with Sambie Hot Cloud Storage.
And it is our coordinator of the week and it
is a hot offense with a hot young quarterback, talking
about the rookie Tyler Shuck. And so we are giving
our Coordinator the Week award to Saints offensive coordinator Doug
nuss Meyer. Now this is kind of a joint award

(19:36):
because Kellen Moore is the play caller, but Nuts is
the OC and quarterbacks coach spends a lot of time
with Shuck, and so we wanted to give nuss Meyer
some credit here. Look, he has been a well traveled dude,
you know, and obviously his son, you know, Garrett is
quarterback we'll be talking about as he makes his transition
from LSU into the NFL. True coaches son that dude's

(19:57):
got excellent fundamentals, great, great, just a technician at the
quarterback spot.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
That's neither here nor there.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
But I think that's what he's doing with Tyler Shuck
like that's that's kind of the point here. He is
really harnessing that great talent that we saw, you know,
at times throughout his seven year college career, and both
in the run game and in the past game, he's
showing you what a what kind of a valuable weapon
he has become. So let's just give you a little
background again on nus Nuss began his uh he you.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Know, was a draft pick out of Idaho.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
I think, yeah, it was fourth want to say, his
fourth round back in nineteen ninety four and was picked
by the Saints. So I got to know him quite
a bit when I was messing around with my dad,
you know in the locker rooms.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
Was great.

Speaker 2 (20:41):
Actually held the Superdome longest touchdown pass record, like inside
the Superdome for a touchdown pass he threw to Terry Guess.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
A receiver.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yeah yeah, yeah, this is this is a long time
ago now that was quickly erased when Drew Brees got
the town. That record went away pretty quickly, but then
played a little bit bounce around the NFL a little
bit with the Broncos Colts, and then got into Canada
to finish his career.

Speaker 1 (21:11):
But his coaching career has been really interesting. I mean,
he has been at some.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Blue bloods of college football and then you know talking
about Washington where he was the OC quarterbacks coach, Alabama
for two years, Michigan, Florida for three years, and then
got back into the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. Spent
five years there. Starting at twenty eighteen, was with Kellen
Moore with the Chargers and then went with him to

(21:36):
Philly as the quarterbacks coach, and then when Kellen took
the head coaching job at New Orleans, brought us in
as the OC.

Speaker 1 (21:43):
SO Tyler Shuck who's.

Speaker 2 (21:45):
Been starting for the last last few games here over
three hundred yards a lot. It's been The stats have
been quiet Buck in the past game, but they lit
up in this game. What have you seen in terms
of the progression from Shuck to kind of gives some
clarity as to what Nuts has been doing there.

Speaker 4 (22:02):
Look, I say Nuts and Kellen Moore have done a
really good job of giving Tyler shared confidence and Tyler
Shuff this is the thing, and we talked about you,
one of his biggest advocates during the pre draft process
in terms of his maturity but also the skills that
he brings to the table athletic, big time arm talent.
You would see that arm talent displayed on several prominent

(22:22):
plays at Louisville, and you're seeing all of those things
come up. I think what has really happened for Shut
is him displaying the dude factor that has helped his
teammates fall in love with him. That's been the separating
factor between him and Spencer Ratler. Like he started to
show some due qualities on scrambles and improvisational plays. You
saw the big time arm talent and it clicked. We're

(22:45):
seeing Chris o'lavey show back up, a guy that we
loved in the draft process. All of a sudden, he's open,
yeah and making plays. And a lot of this is
due to Tyler Shutt having the arm talent and the
confidence and the maturity to kind of make happen.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
Yeah, I've been really impressive. And I just think again,
I remember talking to Shuck a little bit before the
season and I was like, tell me a little bit
about Nuss and how it's working with Kellen. He's like, well, look,
you know, Kellen is so meticulous in detailed and serious
about everything he does. Right, It's why he's been such
a great coach in the league. Whereas Nuts is a
little bit more like he'll let you have it, kind

(23:21):
of a little bit more in your face.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
You know, like you you know, it might curse a
little bit, whereas Kellen's a little bit more straight arrow.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
But to have those kind of both, you know, both personalities,
it feels like they kind of give Chuck what he
needs in all different scenarios. And look at this is
a note you know for rookie quarterbacks and for coaches
in the league, like just because they don't start Week
one doesn't mean you know that they're a failure, right,

(23:47):
Like it took some took their time, and Spencer Ratler
took some lumps there as Shuck kind of continued to
refine himself within this offense in New Orleans. And now
I think you're seeing the benefits of that.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
Buck.

Speaker 3 (23:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
So, and I think what it does is another lesson
when it comes to the quarterback process. A lot of
times we see the quarterback classes just the first rounders.
But Tyler schev was a guy who was a fringe
first round talent, drafted in the second round, in and
out the lineup early, but then he settled in. And
you know, at a time when everyone is wondering how
Philip Rivers is able to come off the couch and

(24:21):
play after five years sabbatical at the age of forty
four and have success, I think we just have to
exhibit more patience as these guys are developing, and I
think we have to take guys with more experience coming
into the coming into the pros. I think all of
that stuff matters, whether he's a seven year player or not.
The amount of starts, there's something about the maturity that

(24:41):
he's been able to play, and I think that that
maturity helps them weather storms so they can get to
the other side of the ricky struggles that every quarterback
has to face.

Speaker 2 (24:50):
It's not a given, it's not a guarantee, but more
often than not, the player with more experience rather than
you know, maybe like super high level traits a little
bit higher than the other guy. If you're comparing them,
I'm going to take the deal with experience every time.
And that's that's that's just what the data tells us
at this point.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
I mean we've seen it, man, I said, and saw
it on Sunday bo Nix being a guy that came
with sixty plus stars. We saw brock Perdy be a
seventh rounder. We had almost fifty starts when he entered.
I mean, the data does say that if you get
a guy who has significant stars, he tends to have
a better career. Just look, man, In anything in life,
experience and expertise matters. And the other way that you

(25:32):
develop an expertise is you have to have the experience.
And I think we're seeing it at quarterback.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
Well there it is. That was this week's Hot or
Not segment.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
