MoviePod is a podcast about reclaimed cinema. The films covered are ones that have had a noticeable shift in reception since their initial release. These include cult films that have a die-hard fandom that have rejected the critics. It also includes films have been claimed by communities and subcultures as representation. Hosted by Brian Wishart, a film buff in London, Ontario, Canada. Each week I will be joined by a guest. Bonus episodes under the MoviePod Dispatch umbrella will cover various topics such as film festivals and new releases. You can email questions to be read on the air to moviepodmailbag@gmail.com Do not cold contact me with AI generated interview requests.
Neither of Rob Zombie's Halloween movies received much critical fanfare. People found his approach to making Michael Myers a deeper character to be unnecessary and Zombie's typical filmmaking style was seen as off-putting. However, his sequel has gained a better reputation over time as people have have appreciated the increased violence and psychological tension.
Maeve is back to discuss what I believe is by far Rob Zombie's best fi...
The second follow-up to William Friedkin's horror masterpiece had high expectations but didn't quite become the critical bounce back as expected from the reviled Exorcist II: The Heretic. Overtime William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist III is now widely considered the best sequel in the franchise it features what is considered to be one of the greatest jump scares in horror history.
MoviePod's third and final TIFF 2026 episode is finally here! I'm joined by Dalton Pike to discuss the rest of the films that we saw this year including my personal favourite film of the festival, Possible Love, and some heavy hitters such as Minotaur, Ken Russell's The Devils, Danny Boyle's Ink, Look Back, All of a Sudden and the People's Choice Midnight Madness winner:Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney.
The movies discussed are ...
By popular demand: MoviePod is talking Digger.
Kevin and I ended up talking about Digger for an hour before another recording. Luckily I hit the record button so we just made it an episode. He's a defender and I'm a heavy detractor. Since this recording he has watched it again and is a bigger fan of Digger Rockwell in Alejandro González Iñárritu's polarizing film than even before.
This is a discussion that is full of spoilers. We al...
MoviePod Dispatch: Torus (2026) w/ director Kevin Tuck, and a Forest City Film Festival 2026 Preview
Friend of the show Kevin Tuck created a microbudget indie sci-fi film called Torus that will be having its world premiere at the 2026 Forest City Film Festival in London, Ontario later this month. I got a chance to ask him some questions about independent filmmaking and the ambition of making science fiction on a low budget.
We also preview some other local independent films that are playing at FCFF that caught our eye.

There's a new Resident Evil movie by Zach Cregger coming out this week so MoviePod is returning to the Biohazard well. Maeve is back on the show to discuss Paul W. S. Anderson's best Resident Evil film, the fifth one, Retribution.
This movie has a fascinating video game logic to it. The stylized action stands out and the movie is just a real riot of fun. If you have not seen the other movies in the franchise, this is still a film w...
Sometimes when fans complain enough they will redo the ending of your hit TV show! Except Neon Genesis Evangelion is no Stranger Things. The ending of EVA was abstract and had to be rushed to keep up with a demanding schedule. After the controversial finale, Hideaki Anno and Gainax decided to reinterpret and remake the finale for the series with a two-part theatrical event. The first being a recap film of the series for newcomers a...
Charles Laughton directed exactly one movie: The Night of the Hunter. Audiences and critics disliked it due to its shocking (for 1955) content. Laughton took the criticism to heart and never directed a movie again.
People began to come around to the movie in the 70s as the New Hollywood era flourished. Audiences were not as shocked by the content shown and the films reputation has grown steadily since and it is now considered to be...
It's the movie that depicted a conflict that literally brought down the Fourth French Republic. French critics hated it and it took five years for France to release Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers to release theatrically. Internationally, it was incredibly well regarded. American audiences that were against the Vietnam War gravitated towards it. Due to its grounded depiction of urban resilience and guerilla warfare groups ...
This is one of the movies that made me decide to choose this format for the podcast. Polarizing when it came out, thanks to an inferior theatrical cut, it released in the same month as other sci-fi gems like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, The Thing and E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial. As time went on and additional cuts of the film were released, people went back to the sci-fi noir Blade Runner with deeper appreciation. It is now con...
There's a new Spider-Man in the theatre so it's the perfect excuse to revisit the fantastic, yet maligned, third Sam Raimi film in his trilogy. This film ended a series but people came around to it a bit more a decade later when Tom Holland became the new Spider-Man and people realized this movie was funny on purpose and that the melodrama is something that is missing from the MCU.
Spider-Man 3 is directed by Sam Raimi. It stars Tob...
This is a big one. Batman AND Superman in the same movie? What could go wrong? To many, nothing went wrong and the three hour extended cut of Zack Snyder's superhero team up movie is a a great film. However, those people are wrong. This is possibly my most hated movie ever. I will hand it to them that the longer version is a more coherent movie. Snyder fans to this day like the auteur vision of this film and with films such as Zack...
With one of our greats, Sam Neill, passing away I brough back Dalton Pike to the show to talk about his favourite Jurassic Park film, Joe Johnston's Jurassic Park III. The movie had a mixed reception upon release. However, Spielberg's mixed reception of The Lost World has had people debate for many years on which Jurassic Park sequel is the superior film.
This episode has Dalton explain his love for talking animal films to my absolu...
In tribute of the late Sam Neill, I brought Maeve back onto the show to talk about Paul W.S. Anderson's sci-fi horror cult film Event Horizon. It was critically blasted upon release. Decades later, it has influenced a lot of sci-fi video games such as Dead Space and the iconic scene of Sam Neill using a piece of paper to illustrate how a wormhole works has been used in in movies like Interstellar.
We also find a way to shit on the M...
As a bonus film that doesn't really fit the format, I am joined again by Audens and egg_brained to discuss the disappointing film Minions: The Rise of Gru! Hopefully the new film in theatres now will rectify the mistakes of this film and feature a lot more slapstick minion violence.

Welcome to Jackass!
To celebrate Jackass: Best and Last the supposedly final installment of the slapstick comedy franchise, Dalton is back on the show to chat about a series that both mean a lot to the both of us.
Jackass was considered low brow initially. However, the films reviewed better overtime as critics came to realize that the comradery and friendship of the cast are what make it special... on top of the gross out gags and hi...
Happy Pride Month!
Surfers, bank heists and homoeroticism are at the centre of Kathryn Bigelow's film about masculinity. This Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves is a true cult classic.
I'm joined by Daberhasher to explore this wild movie with an absolutely hilarious discussion.
Point Break is directed by Kathryn Bigelow, produced by James Cameron, written by W. Peter Iliff and maybe James Cameron. It stars Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, ...
Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind premiered in Japan to good reviews. A year later, an awful cut of the film emerged in North America called Warriors of the Wind which misread the tone of the movie and featured a bad English dub. That bad dub changed anime in the west because Miyazaki's hatred of it had him and his people threaten Harvey Weinstein with a prop katana when he wanted to cut Princess Mononoke over a d...

Is Patti Smith not just the "Godmother of Punk", but also the "Original True Crime Girl"? What really happened the night of the Jay Z nightclub stabbing? What do the Diddy indictments truly reveal? All these stories and more, on artists from every genre and their true crimes, in our massive 260-plus story archive. The Dead, the Stones, Johnny, Willie, Frank, Kurt, Courtney, Gaga, Lana, Taylor, and too many to name.
