I'm talking about Sako Smith Schmidty,who was a nineteen ninety graduate of
Grand Rapids Central High of course nowInnovation Central High School and attending Grand Rapids
Community College. Wound up leaving forJackson State, then graduated in nineteen ninety

seven, ultimately worked his way upuntil he became a writer in Indianapolis and
anna in Atlanta on the NBA beat. Wound up working for NBATV at NBA
dot Com, becoming one of themost prominent NBA reporters there were. Sadly
he passed away in two thousand andone due to complications to COVID nineteen.

He got remembered for his incredible legacyby NBA stars like Chris Paul, Dwayne
Wade actually wrote that he had alwaysonly had positive interactions with Seiku, very
very big in the NBA community,and they asked the city of Grand Rapids
if they'd be willing to honor him. Well, yesterday it was actually Sako's
birthday, and that's exactly what theydid. They have made a new section

of Auburn Avenue between Wealthy Street toLate Drive as Sako Smith Way. That's
the stretch of street that he actuallygrew up on. And his sister Misty
just saying how Grand Rapids was alwaysa part of who he was born and

this was always part of who hewas as a person. So seeing the
sign go up speaks volumes about hislegacy and that legacy will roll on.

trends to education opportunities. They heredhe only had one class to go before

he could get his degree, andthey stepped in to help Lyman. Receiving
his associates just a few months shyof his eightieth birthday, He'll walk across
that stage on Saturday, telling ABCseven is not a big deal. I'm
