(00:00):
We are. It's NFL Draft today. I used to really enjoy watching the
(00:04):
NFL Draft, especially with just Saturdaya Sunday. I don't enjoy it as
much now that it's Thursday, Friday, Saturday. He goes on forever.
But yes, I'll be tuned intothat tonight unless there's an American idol on
television. If there's American idol,I mean even watch it now. I'll
watch the draft tonight and no predict. No, I don't do a mock
draft or anything like that. Ijust kind of enjoy it. I don't
know what it is. It's kindof therapeutic, not as fun as it
(00:25):
used to be. But I doenjoy the draft. Who the Broncos choose,
I have no clue, don't Idon't know they've got They got Zach
Williams, a quarterback all as wellas the Broncos. It's going to be
a fantastics Sorry. I couldn't evenget through that with a straight face.
Anyway, the NFL Draft tonight,I'm sure I have let me to talk
about tomorrow. Caleb Williams. I'dbe cautious of him, That's just me.
(00:46):
That'd be very cautious of him.But hey, the Chicago Bears seemed
to pick a new quarterback every coupleof years in the draft, don't they.
They seemed to always it's a rotationthere. It really is all right,
good to have you here. Let'sbring it back here to northern col
Dorado, and let's talk to LoriSaine, a Well County commissioner. And
she's been on the program many manytimes before. And it's an election year.
(01:07):
We'll give you her website. She'srunning for office, and we'll give
you that website here in just amoment. But yesterday or this week,
i should say, the Board ofCounty Commissioners in Well County, there was
a discussion about the sheriff, SteveRiams in particular, but funding the department.
As you recall, Steve Riams wason the program a couple of weeks
ago talking about the funding woes hehad, the recruitment issues. He had
(01:32):
talked about the jail that made statewidenews as far as having to kind of
de staff some of the help ofthe jail. So they've got some funding
issues. They've not been fully fundedthe Sheriff's department. Lori Saye's been trying
to work on that as he's awell county commissioner and Loriie Sane is on
the hotline. Good morning, Lourie. How are you. I'm Jim excellent.
Jemmy, how are you. I'mdoing very well. Thank you very
(01:55):
much. Let's dive in here. It's been a discussion, became a kind
of statewide news when they talk, when Steve Reims, when publicans said,
listen, we don't have the fundingwe need. We got to cut some
of our staff and get the jailput it. We've got to cut some
services, animal services and other things. You just got to cut services to
keep Weld County safe because i haven'tbeen funded. That has now changed,
(02:16):
I'm understanding this week. Yes,and it was a long battle, and
because people are a little bit haty, I'm just going to go over a
quick timeline. But back in thesummer fifth a sheriff came ask some more
funding for retention and hiring, andwe had several work sessions in the last
four months on the same topic. And you can hear me in the audio
advocating for the sheriff because we've gotsome nice to have in our budgets,
(02:38):
but not need to have. Andobviously the sheriff is they need to have,
and the commissioners, you know, finally run Alando I think it was
March twentieth, gave the sheriff partialfunding and then he makes that surprise announcement
to the media that he's pulling deputiesfrom the community, the staff, the
jail, including animal control. Ithink that's where you came in, Jimmy.
(02:58):
With a couple of shows on andsince then, I immediately called another
work session after that show. Thevote was four to one against voting the
sheriff, even though we could havepulled from four different funding sources. But
then I noticed this past week wewere getting work sessions for other budget requests
(03:20):
in the millions of dollars, butnot for the sheriff. And it turns
out we had just received a fourpoint seven million dollars one time injection to
their general funds from a bill.So basically what happened from then I forced
the issue in the public with theresolution to let folks know, put pressure
on because at this point we haveno excuse. It did get shot down
(03:42):
after some time wagging. On Monday, I forced the issue again with neta
resolution yesterday, this time including thesheriff and DA as a priority because I
learned he hadn't received his funding yeteither for hiring retention. And the VA's
requests are a larger than previously authorized. So at the most basic level of
government, Jimmy, you've got tohave police in court and other services need
(04:04):
to be prioritized around that. Thatresolution was shot down again, but I
made a motion to fully fund thesheriff that was shot down, but another
commissioner made the same emotion and itpassed. So you know, regardless it
got done. The sheriffs that hewas surprised. He wasn't expecting it.
(04:24):
I know they don't want to givethis commissioner credits, but I mean,
there's no doubt. I think atthis point I'm the change agent and lost
stuff that's going on. It seemslike I have to do my business in
the public to put some light onwhat's going on, Jimmy, to get
the right things done for the peopleWill County. And that's why I serve
we need to get the right thingsdone and we need to prioritize our most
(04:45):
basic services. So you're putting resolutionsout of the fully funded the sheriff,
and for some reason, they're notreally going anywhere. Why is that?
What do you think your colleagues upthere are that seems like, hey,
let's all vote for that. It'snot like you're fully funded the Botany Department
or something. I mean, it'sjust the sheriff of Weld County. What
do you think the hesitation was oris and has been? Honestly, I
(05:10):
don't know. I mean, wewe have other funding sources. We even
have millions and millions of dollars insome of these that are accounts that are
just sitting there on some of thesedepartments that are being underutilized. And we
really shouldn't be in the business ofdoing piggy banks. And you know,
I've talked to a couple of directorsabout that. They completely agree with that.
So we could have pulled funding fromvarious other sources. We could have
(05:32):
even put off, say capal improvementprojects, because again, our priority should
be providing those services to people WeldCounty. And when you make an announcement
that you're a deputy free zone, then what do you think is going to
happen with people around the county. What the signal is that going to send
to I mean, we were havingobviously an immigration problem in Denver, that
(05:57):
that problem is moving north to WeldCounty. We do have criminals that cross
our border as well. Obviously thisis something that could not continue in its
current function. And of course withthe sheriff announcing that the citizens can just
take care of animal control, youknow that's a little dangerous too. I
mean, you know, there aresome dangerous animals out there, and I
don't want people to get hurt. So, you know, people do expect
(06:19):
that service since we've been providing it, even if it's not statutorial statutorially required.
I think one of the things yousaid earlier on Lorie's saying, my
guess Wealth County Commissioner, is thatyou had an infusion of millions of dollars
from the state legislature. Well,a lot of times people don't realize that
how that's how it works. Theypass the bills down to the dome of
(06:40):
dummies, Jared Poldo signed them, and all of a sudden, millions of
dollars that have been collected in Netverget doled out to the state to different
counties and municipalities. And is thatwhat happened here? Is at how this
influx of cash came to Well County. Yeah, and the bill itself was
poorly constructed. And basically it's aproperty. It's our own money coming back
(07:00):
to us. Right, It's kindof like a several government scheme. You
know, we're going to give youtoo much taxes, You're going to give
us a rebate back and say,oh, what a great state government.
But it's our taxpayer money that weshould have received. Anyway, it's a
bizarre world. We live in Loriesaying you are running for Well County Commissioner
at large, you have a campaignwebsite. First of all, I know
(07:23):
that in the legislature, especially inWashington, d C. They kind of
go on summer break in summer recessso that these politicians can stay out of
trouble and not be forced on anykind of votes. In Washington, does
a Well kind of commissioners do theytake a summer break? Do you guys
still meet every week? Kind ofwhat's the schedule there? Now, we're
not like Congress and we're not likethe state legislatures, So we meet all
(07:46):
your long and if you want toshow up. And by the way,
public comment has been partially restored, you can now petition the government for your
grievances up to fifteen minutes total forthe entire room, unless waves, but
those are Monday and Wednesday mornings startingat nine am. So you're I do
encourage people to come watch procedures.I notice the more constituents are in the
(08:11):
room, the nicer everything tracks along. So it'd be great if people would
would show and show their support. But yeah, we're we do meet all
year long. Mauri saying, ifsomebody wants to contact you, you have
a website. Where do they go, ma'am? It is www dot sane
for Weld dot com, s AI, N E, F O R
(08:33):
or numeral four for Weld dot com, SANE for Weld dot com. That's
s A I any saying for Well, Lorisaye, appreciate you coming on the
program. Lorisane, Weld County commissioner. Talk about the they got some money
for the sheriff. That's a goodthing, right, That's just amazing how
that takes so long, and oh, well we got a fund to that
(08:56):
other stuff. You know, there'sone thing you want to fund is probably
law enforcement. Unless you're the Cityand County of Denry, you want to
cut that. I don't think Weldwants to be that. I don't think
so. Anyway, we'll be backNews Talk six hundred, case col
