Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right here. We aren't glad to have you here.
You know, one of my favorite times of the year
in Colorado is the autumn or the fall. Not a
big fan of the winter, to be honest, I don't
like the cold weather. I try to take as many
trips to Africa for my charity work as I can
during wintertime. That's something I try to do. But I
do like the fall, and the fall just reminds you
(00:21):
that you better start getting that furnace ready because winter
is on the way. Is your furnace ready? Did it
close up last winter? Kind of going? Well, honey, this
house is not getting heated as efficiently as it used to.
Maybe you know your furnaces on its last leg. Maybe
you just want to have it looked at to see
if it's on his last leg. Hey, now's the time
fall of the year as September October. It's the perfect
(00:43):
time to get one hour heating and air conditioning out
there and have them do what I call the tune
up or the maintenance check. They'll make sure that thing's
ready to go, so the when the real cold weather hits,
you just flip it on it. You're ready to go.
You don't want to flip it on when the cold
weather comes and go, oh, shoot, it's not working, and
you probably say something worse than shoot at that point.
So listen, be ready when the cold weather comes and
(01:03):
this snow starts to fly, have that furnace up and running,
and go ahead and schedule that maintenance check with one
hour Heating and Air conditioning one hour Heat and Air
dot com slash Jimmy Laky. This is who I use
at the House of Laky. They've been serving Colorado for
thirty five plus years on those beautiful Orange Vans vehicles
and they take care of your best, top top notch
customer service, a seamless customer service. I think some of
(01:26):
the best pros in the industry. I indeed think that,
and again you're just gonna I'm telling you I've used
them for over a decade. I've even had to replace
the entire HVAC systems at my home. One hour Heat
and Air dot com slash Jimmy Lakey one hour Heat
and Air dot com slash Jimmy Leaky. One hour Heat
and Air dot com slast Jimmy Leaky eight five five
(01:46):
one hour eight five five one hour. Be sure to
tell him that Jimmy Leakey is talking about him on
the radio eight five five one hour. All right, let
me bring in to the program a lot of conversation
about the debate and of course the commemoration of septem
for the eleventh today. But kN Kachigan is on the hotline.
He's written a book called Behind Closed Doors in the
(02:08):
room with Reagan and Nixon. He had a lot of
private moments with Reagan and Nixon because he was in
their communications department, help write speeches, road speeches for Ronald
Reagan and Ken Kachigi and is on the hotline now
and with a new movie out about Reagan, a lot
of interest in what Reagan was like behind closed Doors.
(02:28):
So kN Kachig and walking to the program again, Hi, Jimmy,
I'm doing very well. Let me ask you, you were
with the Nixon and Reagan throughout several years in Washington
debate time. Did you spend any time either prepping for
debate or watching the debate prep? We just had a
big debate last night, so it's on my mind.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
I did. Yeah, I was involved in debate prep for
President Reagan in nineteen eighty four, and I should have
been more involved in it because it did work out
so well. I was unhappy with his debate teams preparation,
and I tried to get more My staff put together
(03:11):
a lot of the debate information, but unfortunately my team
wasn't involved in the precise debate. Be from books. I
watched the debate preparation for President Reagan and was disappointed
in how they did it. And we didn't have a
very good debate that first one with Walter Mondale in
(03:34):
October of nineteen eighty four, but we recovered in the
second debate he did really well, and in nineteen eighty
I traveled with him in the nineteen eighty campaign, and
then I came up with the line that helped him
in that debate. You might remember it, are you better
off than you were four years ago? So that seemed
(03:57):
to help pretty much.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Jimmy, it is weird to hear a line that you
came up with and you wrote for Ronald Reagan or
gave to Ronald Reagan. It was even used last night
in the debate. They asked Kamala Harris hey Donald Trump
as asking if people are better off four years ago
than they are today? Is it kind of weird to go, hey,
I kind of came up with that a few years ago.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
You know, I didn't know he was going to use that.
That was interesting, it was it was not prepared, h
you know, that was not I was not actually part
of that debate prep team. That that was a different
debate prep team. That line was actually used about three
weeks before the debate and Langhorn actually in Pennsylvania, the
(04:41):
state where the debate was last night, and it was
at a mall in Langhorn, the Oxford Mall, Langmorn, Pennsylvania,
and we were campaigning, and you know, I was the
chief street trader on the campaign trail and struggling, struggling,
struggling to come up with lines that would resonate to
(05:03):
get the point across that Jimmy Carter was a failure.
And one day I came up with it, and the
first generation was asked yourself, are you better off today
than you were in nineteen seventy six? And then we
honed it down and a few days later Reagan used
it again in another location I think was LA and
(05:28):
he tweaked it and switched it. We switched it to
are you better off today than you were fo than
you were four years ago and then so I didn't
know he was going to use that in the debate.
But it worked out pretty well, don't it, Jimmy, Yeah,
it really did.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Kim Kchigen is my guest. He's reading the book called
Behind Closed Doors in the room with Reagan and Nixon,
and again Hugh was in the room as a speechwriter,
especially the senior speechwriter for President Reagan and senior political
advisor as well. Kim Kinchig on the hotline, I can
a lot of interest in Reagan with this new movie.
The critics thought I wouldn't do well, It's done quite
(06:05):
well in the box office. Have you had a chance
to see this movie? And do you field there's an
accurate portrayal?
Speaker 2 (06:12):
I did. I did watch the movie. Actually, I was
sitting right next to John Boy here at a premiere
in Newport Beach. Uh and uh uh I turned around
and and and told John, I said, you still got
it man. He he was great in the movie. And uh, well,
movies are dramatizations of how they do everything, and uh
(06:39):
much of it is a great uh portrayal of of
of how things were in the back in those days.
And and Dennis Quaid does a great portrayal of of
Reagan and Penel plan Penelope and Millard does a nice
portrayal of Nancy Reagan, and I will I will say
(07:01):
this that the portrayal she does of of of Nancy
Reagan and her role in the Reagan presidency is spot on.
And uh, the there's a couple of scenes in there,
one of how Lady Thatcher's shaped help shape Reagan's portrayal
(07:22):
role in the Cold War and Reagan's relationship with the
Gorbachev was correct. But you can't jam, you know, a
whole lifetime of running Reagan into one movie. But it's
a good dramatization and people will enjoy the movie. They
should enjoy the movie. But you want to fill in
(07:43):
all the yeah, uh in betweens, go to my book
and get the real stuff where you'll get all the
conversations between me and Reagan and and the crusade and
and how he talked to people, and how he how
he talked to his inner circle, and what happened in
the Oval office in Air Force one Camp David. The
(08:06):
movie is sort of a quick look at everything, but
it's a fun movie and entertaining.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Yeah, the was a Ken Kaschicken, can we have a
couple of moments left? I remember I was up twenty
I think it's a twenty sixteen Republican convention. I ended
up going back and forth to the convention hall sharing
transportation with Ed Rollins at the time, and he told
me some of the funniest stories about Reagan. He said,
towards the end of Reagan's term, he'd always hand him
(08:32):
coins and say, you're gonna need these for a payphone.
You're gonna need these for parking soon, he said. Reagular
is always handing him Nichols and quarters at dimes has
said you're going to have to travel differently now. Is
that the Reagan you knew.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Regulars? The jokes are Rollins was full of the boom
with a good part of the time, so you got
the best of both of them. But anyway, Reagan was
full of humor, always had a good story and and
that was one of his way to pass pass the time,
(09:07):
uh was to spend a good yarn and tell a
good story about one of his movies, or about one
of his roles, or about people he knew in Hollywood.
And so he was always a good storyteller, always, always
a good laugh.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Uh, kN Kitschigan, it's a pleasure. I always liked the
conversation behind Closed Doors in the Room with Reagan and Nixon.
If you saw the Reagan movie, just so fill in
