Speaker 1 (00:00):
I won't let my body outly outweigh everything that I'm made,
won't spend my life trying to change. I'm learning to
love who I am. I get I'm strong, I feel free,
I know who every part of me it's beautiful and
then will always out way if you feel it. With

(00:24):
joy in the air, she'll some love to the boom
that Let's say a good day and did you and
die out Happy Saturday outweigh fam. The last three weeks
we've been talking skincare with Hannah Ellis and week one
is about disordered eating and how it affects our skin.
Then we talked about filters and a review of our

(00:47):
skin and what really is healthy skin and it's not
you with an Instagram filter, that is for sure. So
you can go back and listen to those the last
two Saturdays if you want to. And today we're gonna
talk about our mental health and how our skincare concerns
can affect are thinking and our mental health and how

(01:10):
to even overcome anxiety when it comes to your skin. So, Hannah,
is this something that that you see as an esthetician
and what are your thoughts around skincare and mental health?
It's such a broad question, but I really think that
especially if you suffer from anxiety or if you come
from place of like disordered eating or body dysmorphia at all,

(01:32):
and maybe body dysmorphia is more along the lines of
this kind of thing. But I feel like some people
that what what they see in the mirror first thing
in the morning, like just to brush their teeth, they're
already like critiquing themselves. You know, they're starting their day
off with like, oh my god, am I going to
have another pimple today? Or am I not gonna or
like what's what am I going to see that I

(01:53):
don't like today, and constantly picking themselves apart, causing this
anxiety and like kind of just self hatred almost. It's
so sad to say, but I see it in people
who have almost have like they've gotten great results with us,
and then like maybe their skin does a normal thing,
like it gets a blemish, like one every couple of

(02:14):
months or something, and they're like it's like everything falls
apart for them, and you kind of just see this
like spiral and you're like whoa, okay, hold on, remember
what we talked about in your first consultation, is that
this is like like blemishes happen, or you know, we
start to you know, you just have to re educate.
But for me, like I don't know if I said
this at all, but my motto has always been, like

(02:34):
I empower or we empower our clients to achieve the
healthiest skin of their life. And we do that through
education first, an understanding of your body right and understanding
of what your skin is supposed to do, and then
through you like corrective home care products and corrective treatments.
But first is that like education, And we talked about

(02:55):
this a little bit on week two just about how
coming from place of gratitude for your body first thank you,
understanding like how your skin is protecting you or what
is healthy skin in the first place, really can help
like reset some anxiety a little bit. But anxiety can
manifest in so many ways in your skin, whether it's

(03:17):
just stress in your life and then that showing up
as inflammation in your body and then a skin condition
in reaction to that, or people who have actual like
picking disorders, like picking at their skin, and we like
to give people action items for those things specifically, whether
it's like as simple as like I really want you

(03:38):
to look in the mirror at night every night before bed,
and just picture of the skin that you want. It
actually reduces stress levels in your body to just like
believe that you're on the path to healthy skin. Or
if you are someone who is like an extreme picker
at blemishes, um or just even at nothing, when you
have anxiety, you start like scratching or picking at things

(04:00):
you find like a tiny little bump or something to
start messing with it. I'm always like, okay, we need
to do something else with our hands here, whether it's
like I mean, as simple as getting it like a
little fidget spinner or getting an ice roller. You can
find those anywhere nowadays, but you can also, like super
cheap just use an ice cube like ice your skin
twice a day. Just giving your hands something else to

(04:23):
do besides like picking those action items really help. So
I'm tying it all in with the motto that we
have because I think that empowering your clients to achieve
healthy skin is so much more than you coming in
for facials and using the serum that serum or this
like certain topical acne medication or whatever. It's more about

(04:46):
giving you real life tools to believe that you are
on the path to healthy skin or the skin of
that you want. I've realized at the times because when
I was thick into my eating disorder was probably when
I had the most stress and anxiety because I was
constantly picking myself apart, and that did include my face.

(05:09):
Even though it was just an overall yes, body dysmorphia
was a thing just control and picture like a roller
coaster for me, at least, my eating disorder would kind
of have its highs and it slows ups and downs,
and when when it low actually was good because it wasn't.
I wasn't completely in my behavior. I had some control,

(05:32):
but then it would spiral and I was spiraling. That's
when I would like be in my magnifying mirror and
extracting all kinds of things and trying to I was
creating more issues for myself because I was on the high.
You know. It was when my eating disorder was month
to month. I just see how and I don't know.

(05:54):
I never was able to do any studies on myself
to see how hormones were playing a role of when
I would get hyper fixated and focused on stuff or
I would be more spiraling, as I would call it
just kind of out of control. But that's when I
would be kind of also ripping my face apart with
my fingernails, and I oddly also had some satisfaction in

(06:15):
that too. But then there was shame and regret because
I would look in the mirror and my face would
be so puffy and swollen. That awful. But in the moment,
it was everything. It's a hot it's a hot. Yes,
it's like drugs. Yes, it's you taking control right in
Layman's terms, Like I really do think like picking especially

(06:35):
is like you just feel like there's nothing else that
you can do to make X y Z feel better,
and so you hyper fixate on this one thing or
like if I can just get this core out of
this the lemit like out of this blemish, it will
just relieve me of so much. And it literally does.
Extracting a blemish like has this release that you can

(06:56):
almost visualize, right, but well you can vigilize because you
can see it. But then you back up and you're like,
I just created Mount Vesuvius of like redness and blood,
you know what I mean. Like now it's worse, but
in the moment, you're like fixated and you're up close
in this magmire and you don't even realize what you're doing,

(07:17):
and you're like, I'm not gonna use my nails. I'm
not gonna like dig in with my fingers. I'm just
gonna like lightly press and get this out. No, we're
you're like digging in its snowballs into this thing that
you're like back up and you're like, oh no, it's
a physical head to tell like, h now what how
much makeup? And I have to use to cod or whatever.

(07:37):
They're gonna know. People are gonna know that I did
like that I picked at this or it made it
look worse. It's just such a cycle, but it is
it is so relieving in the moment, like it's a
tactical thing. You have to do something with your hands
because you just need to grab onto some kind of
control that you're like, I'm taking care of this, whether

(07:59):
that is like a simp skincare routine, right, but we're
not picking. We're just gonna do a quick cleanse, a
quick remoisturize or something. Um. Instead of picking, we're going
to ice the pimple instead of you know, going to
bed like loathing yourself. You know what I mean? Just
be like I'm gonna picture of the skin that I want,
and I mean I would hope that you have a
professional it's helping you guide you to that point because

(08:21):
if you really do feel that anxious and that worried,
I really think seeing an esthetician that helps you like
come up with a plan kind of takes the weight
off your own shoulders to be like, I'm just in
I don't know what I'm doing. Is this ever going
to get better? Believing that someone you trust and someone
who has your best interest and the knowledge behind it,
you know what I mean, that can help guide you there.

(08:43):
You're like, oh, I don't have to worry about this,
Like that's not my problem. My estheticians got this and
we're working on it. It's just gonna take some time.
That kind of like kind of gain control over the situation.
That's what helps me, at least, I find that it
helps those clients to Yeah, when it comes to the
magnifying mirror, what do you recommend for your clients? Like
do we need those or do we not? Are they

(09:04):
doing it's more harm than good? I say, no mag
mirrors in the house. Try to avoid them if you're
staying overnight, somewhere at a hotel. But then my other
most important things like no hips on the sink, back
away from the mirror, like step away. Um, I guarantee
you nobody's looking at your skin that close. If you
look that close, it's kind of like digging for dirt,

(09:26):
Like you're gonna find something because skin is the way
that it is. But nothing, nothing needs to be extracted
that just because you're seeing it that close that you
just don't need to pick out it. Leave extractions to
the professionals. If they need to come out, it'll come
out at your appointments. But yeah, the hips on the
sink my main rule, and like get the hips off

(09:47):
the sink. No leaning into the mirror. So hips off
the sink. Some sort of something with our hands, fidgets,
spinner or whatnot, ice cube, self talk before bed building,
our team finding an aesthetician that's gonna you know, you know,
you're on a journey somewhere, like you've got to support

(10:07):
and you don't have to tackle all of this stuff
at once. But like if you could just start doing
like even tonight before bed and this, maybe you're listening
to this and you're like, okay, well, my thing isn't
really skincare, it's you know, how I feel about this
part of my body. Maybe it's not your face, it
might be x y Z, but how you talk to
yourself about your body, which I think even before BED

(10:29):
I've heard from multiple people, even just reminding yourself that
you are safe, and you are loved and you were kind.
You are telling yourself all these things then somehow translates
later to you feeling safe in the days to come
and feeling kind and I mean kind to yourself. You're
probably really kind to other people, but then we're not

(10:51):
so kind to ourselves. But somehow reminding ourselves of that
before BED helps. I'm even thinking only because I'm super
pregnant right now, but like the something early pregnancy that
a therapist had recommended was like just repeating to yourself,
like I am safe in my body. My baby is
safe in my body. There's so many things, especially in

(11:11):
the first trimester, I mean even in the second trimester.
What you're just anxious. You're like, how do I know
that he's getting what what he needs? Like, like you know,
you just have this like crazy anxiety about it, and
you're just just repeating that through this entire process of
your body changing and seeing ultrasounds and just being like,
oh my gosh, like getting notifications on your phone that

(11:34):
literally are telling you you're like making a spinal cord today,
and you're like, holy crap. I'm like, I'm safe in
my body. My baby is safe in my body. Those
sim I know that's not about skin, but like it's
so important and I feel like I'm going to carry
that even way after having a baby. I think the
constant in all three weeks that we've talked is just

(11:57):
this gratitude for what your body is doing for you.
That our skin is actually working really hard to protect us,
that our bodies are constantly holding onto nutrition and goodness
keeping us alive, you know what I mean, Like we're alive.
That's crazy. So I am like, just before bed, I'm like,

(12:18):
I am safe in my body. Or overcoming anxiety for
me is always about grasping for just whatever, like a
little bit of control, and if that is just saying
thank you, that has always helped. But you know, obviously,
if you're dealing with a skin condition, finding the right
people in your corner that can help you with the

(12:40):
real tools for your specific skin condition or something like
that that makes all the difference. To Hannah, thank you
so much for joining us the last three weeks. Y'all
can find Hannah on Instagram. She's at the Nashville Esthetician
and then her practices Hannah Ellis Skincare dot com. That's
website where you can find all the details. And I

(13:01):
don't have to book an appointment. I want to come in.
I want to after talking with you and just seeing
how much you deeply care about the well being of
your clients, like, oh, I need Hannah Hannah Ellis touch
because I just know that I'll be in good hands.
And I'm sure all of your clients feel that way.
After they leave there, they've walked away with more than

(13:22):
a facial or a skincare treatment or whatever it is
that you're doing. And I think that I hope it's
more common than I think, but I'm just thinking, yeah,
you're building a team that at least is putting this
out into the world. We really just want to help
people achieve healthy skin and let them know that it
is not as much about all these crazy vanity things.

(13:43):
It's just it's like self love, self care and really
nurturing yourself and believing in your body to do what
it's supposed to do with the right tools and the
right information. Yeah, and I love that people are gonna
they lay down at and Hannah ellis what do y'all
call it? Is it like a bed? I can't just
try table treatment table? Y'all lay down on the treatment table.

(14:07):
And know that Hannah does not care what you ate
the night before. You do not need to explain it
to her because she's going to celebrate whatever you ate.
It doesn't even matter. So we don't want you to
feel guilt about your skin because you consume it X
y Z because it's not about that. And thank you
Hannah for being that light in this space. And yeah,

(14:28):
y'all just check her out at the Nashville Esthetician. Thanks Hannah,
Thank you
