Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay, it's Q and A Time. I've got another round
of email questions that I'm going to go through. I
am Amy Brown, host of Four Things with Amy Brown,
and then every Tuesday bring you the fifth Thing, which
is Q and A Q and A Time. Um. I
love all the emails that are coming in. I really
appreciate all of them. I wish I could address every

(00:21):
single one on the Q and A or in the podcast.
You know, sometimes they end up here in the Q
and A or it's something that I think could actually
be like a thing so it makes it to the
Thursday episode or in the email shout out that I
do at the end of Thursday's episode. So anyway, you
never know when your email might pop up. But I
definitely appreciate y'all sending them means a lot. Four Things

(00:41):
with Amy Brown at gmail dot com is the email
in case you think of something that you want to
send over. But uh, let's go ahead and just get
right into the questions. The first one is from Brittany.
She said, can you give us tips on fighting face breakouts?
I need to know about the zip cream you're always
talking about, and I'm also wondering about exfoliating is this

(01:03):
something you do year round? And what do you use? So, Brittany.
The zip cream that I post about a lot where
I've got pink dots all over my face is the
Mario Baduscu drying lotion. And I don't know if I
butcher how you say his name, but Mario Bedescu. It's Italian,
but it's be a d E s c U and

(01:25):
it's pink and it's a drying lotion and it's awesome.
And I have it up on my Amazon page. If
that's an easy way if you're all to find it,
just go to radio Am dot com and a link
will be there and you can see all the beauty
products that I have up on there. But Urban Outfitters
carries it, so does North Drum. If either of those
places are near you, you you could just pop in and
buy it, uh, you know. And that's that's like my

(01:46):
favorite zip cream. And I love that it's just like
right there, like I love that it leaves pretty little
pink dots all over my face. It makes me feel
like it's really fighting the acne that's happening. I'll even
just put it on if I think a pimple is
come if I'm like, my sense of pimple might be
coming right there. I just put it on. My husband
is like, what are you doing to your face right now?

(02:07):
So when it comes to exfoliating, I shave my face.
So definitely have a podcast about this from the Thursday
episode and the four things I learned about it from
Kelly from Velvet's Edge like five years ago. And I've
been doing it and that's the best exfoliation for your skin,
and yes, I do that year round. So um, there's
like little tinkle razors which are also on my Amazon page,

(02:32):
and you know you can find them at other stores
though too, like little drug stores have them. But it's
just little teeny tiny little blades with a cute little
pink or turquoise or yellow stick that just shaved your
face and it feels so soft and smooth. If y'all
are not shaving your face as yet, you are missing out.
And then when it comes to fighting face breakouts, I

(02:53):
would say, for me, what I have to do to
keep things in control? And then sometimes it's just hormonal
or stress and there's not much I can do. But
I know if when I'm not eating right, it shows
up on my face, like if I cut the sugar
and eat pretty clean, then my face is going My
face is just better. Like I'm someone where my skin

(03:14):
is directly affected by what I put in my body.
Some people can have glorious skin no matter what they
put in their body. They can eat crapp all day
long and it doesn't matter. Their face is not going
to break out. Is not the case with me. So
that's my advice on fighting face breakouts is take a
look at what you're eating. Dairy will cause me to
break out a little bit more, and actually I feel
like it. I don't. I don't know that I have

(03:35):
like rose a show, Rose a shop, per se, but
I do have different red spots that flare up when
I do consume dairy. So just a heads up on that,
if that's something that's going on with you, maybe cut
back on that if you consume dairy. Next email was
from Elizabeth. What kind of waffle maker? Did your husband get? You?
Listening to you talk about waffle recipe? And I think

(03:56):
you got it from the kale junkie on Instagram. Yes
I did, and Elizabeth, it's such an easy, awesome recipe.
Anyway back to your email, she said you put it
on setting three and my waffle maker doesn't have settings. However,
I've been dying to ask you where your husband got
yours from, because I'm in search for a really good wafflemaker, Elizabeth.
My husband got it at Williams Sonoma and it's an

(04:17):
all clad Belgian waffle maker. Again, I searched it out,
found it on Amazon, and put it on my page
just to make it easy for y'all. But I mean,
if you all just want to search all cloud Belgian wafflemaker,
you can find it too. But radio amay dot com
for Amazon stuff, and you know, really that is just
a way for for y'all to to get to what
I'm talking about. I'm not trying to like push you there,

(04:38):
like go buy it wherever. The Williams Sonoma one that
my husband got me is amazing. It's square, and I
was on their website the other day and it was
on sale. So I don't know when y'all are listening
to this right now, but if you're by a Williams Sonoma,
maybe it's still on sale there, which would be awesome.
And then I found a round one that I put
up on Amazon if you prefer to just order it

(04:58):
and have it shipped to your house. And that one
was um less expensive than the Williams Sonoma one. So
there's that. Next email is from Brittany. I listened to
a podcast where you talked about your favorite yoga on YouTube.
Could you please give a name of the video? UM
or write a blog post about your journey? UM, maybe
I can get to a blog post. Guys, I want

(05:20):
to add a blog element to my website. I just
haven't quite gotten there yet. I'm on the struggle bus
trying to figure out how to balance all of this,
so I hope you all will be patient with me,
but definitely want to add little blogs that they're for
you all, so that way I can refer you all
to that. But yoga on YouTube, I love yoga with

(05:41):
Adrian A D R I E N E. She's awesome.
She has a twenty minute one where she's doing it outside.
I'm pretty sure if on YouTube you just type in
yoga with Adrian D Talx and Digestion, that particular video
will show up, and it's my favorite one. I mean,
she has a lot of really good ones. She has

(06:01):
them for like all kinds of things, no matter what
you've got going on. In your life. But I love
the detox and digestion one because there's lots of like
twists in there helping like ring out your system. So
she's she's just a really good one. So that is
my favorite one on YouTube when I'm trying to do
some yoga at home. Next email is from Megan. Hey, Amy,
I know you have talked about the effects and dangers

(06:22):
of sugar on the show a few times, and recently
I really feel like I need to do a sugar detox.
It scares me though, because I love me some sweet tea.
I'm pretty sure I went straight from bottles to sweet
tea as a child, and that's only the start. Once
I have some sugar, I want all the sugar. I
would love to live as sugar free or sugar limited life, though,

(06:43):
I just don't want to start and fail like I
do basically every other healthy change. Any tips on how
to kick the sugar a realistic timeframe, how I can
drink my coffee every morning without sweet cream? Okay, Megan,
First of all, you got to just give yourself a break,
start off with more of a positive attitude instead of
already approaching it with like acquitter's mentality. Or a failure

(07:06):
mentality like you can do this, it is going to
be challenging. I will say any time that I've had
to like cut the sugar or do a detox, you know,
headaches come in, you get tired. I mean, your brain
literally is craving it. And when you're not giving it
to your brain and it's something that's been a part
of you for a while, your body is gonna have
some detox reactions which sometimes are not gonna be pretty,

(07:26):
and you're just gonna have to power through. They will
be gone in like a day or two. So once
it starts to set in and your body realized it's
not getting it, just power through and stay positive because
you can do it and you will feel so much
better for it. Now. I've never been into too sweet tea,
but I mean I can only imagine there's a lot
of sugar in there, so I could see getting addicted

(07:48):
to that would be really awesome, and it would be
hard to go from sweet tea to like no sweet tea.
I mean my Starbucks order is an unsweetened green iced tea.
Uh so, I mean I just like tea with no sugar.
I feel like, though, if you went and ordered that
you'd be like, this is disgusting, Like I do not
like it. So maybe if you tried making tea. But

(08:11):
then you get some liquid stevia, which I'm a fan of.
I know some people don't really like stevia, but to
nutritionists that I trust, Kelly Lovek and Kimberly Snyder are
both okay with liquid stevia. I like. Uh. New Naturals
is a brand that I like. It's an alcohol free
one again on my Amazon page radio ama dot com.
But um, that's one that I like. But you may

(08:32):
have have another one. Um, you know, maybe add that
to your sweet tea, see if it helps. And then cinnamon.
Cinnamon is another way to just naturally help stop sugar
cravings because there's a lot of studies out there, and
I did a little bit of research because I've heard
this before, but I wanted to make sure I delivered
it to you correctly because it's why I started adding
cinnamon to a lot of things. But there's um polyphenols

(08:55):
in cinnamon, and they help reduce sugar cravings by controlling
your blood glucose levels, and so this will help minimize
insulin spikes that result in you know, you having food cravings,
like if you have an unbalanced meal, it leads to
you being more hungry, craving more sugar, but the cinnamon
can help balance that out. So maybe trying to find

(09:17):
ways dad cinnamon into your life. And then I went
ahead and pulled an article from Mind Body Green because
I know that this is something hard for um. A
lot of you like the sugar thing me included, so
I wanted this m refresher. But on this Mind Body
Green article, it talks about cutting sugar and maybe why
you're a little bit addicted and what you can do

(09:38):
to stop it. So first of all, it said find
the sweetness in your life. So the common thread and
people who suffer from sugar cravings is a lack of
self nurturing. There are often the types who take care
of everyone else and put themselves last, so their reward
to themselves is the sweets, but what is really missing
is finding the sweetness and their lives. So definitely create

(10:01):
space for yourself. Like if you're listening right now and
this resonates with you, then maybe you need to take
some time for some self care and some you time.
Also on the mind Buddy Green article at number two,
it said, drink apple cider vinegar. It helps change your
taste buds to the point where sugary foods taste too sweet.
I mean, I don't know if you'll ever taken a
shot of apple cider vinegar, but it's powerful stuff. I

(10:24):
don't necessarily take shots of it, but I add it
to salad dressings or I pour, I add it to dishes.
I find ways to incorporate it. But yeah, I could
see where I could throw off my taste buds real
quick if I just take a shot of that. Also,
it says here to become a sugar detective. One of
the best ways to quit added sugar is to get

(10:44):
really good at learning how to find it, because, I mean,
the industry has just gotten really good at masking sugar
and calling it by other names. So here's some things
they say to look out for. If it ends an
oase O sc then it's sugar. If it ends insert,
it's also sugar. Some frequent ones that appear healthy, you know,
that are still on the labels are brown rice sugar

(11:07):
and date sugar. So you might be like, oh, I'm
not going to have you know, any added sugar, but
if you see that on the ingredients. Just be aware,
and then of course sucross and lactose are on there
as well to look out for. UM, know that sugar
replacements won't satisfy your cravings. Don't try to replace sugar
with fruit and expect to be satisfied. Seltzer is not

(11:31):
coke and a banana is not a cookie, and that's
totally okay. Let those non sugar items be their own
awesome things instead of a consolation prize. I feel like
this is a really important tip because, yeah, like if
you're just hone in on the fact that the banana
is not a cookie and all you want is a cookie,
then okay, that's gonna get you nowhere. But think of

(11:53):
the banana and how sweet it is, an amazing it taste,
and how awesome it is for what the nutrients it
has to give you, and then maybe it'll be a
little bit different for you. UM renumber another tip here.
I lost count. I don't know what would re'm on.
But another tip that they said was eat almond butter
because it helps keep your blood sugar stable. So maybe

(12:14):
if you're ever feeling like you need some sugar, go
ahead and grab a spoonful of almond butter, and that
will help steady your blood sugar and ward off any
blood sugar crashes. Also, train your taste buds to like bitter.
This one sounds awesome. Try to eat as much plain,
unflavored Greek yogurt as possible, in addition to bitter greens

(12:35):
like watercrest and bitter melon. But they stay here. Within
thirty days, your taste buds will reset and you will
crave less sugar. So if you're really committed to it,
do it. I buy Watercrest and I chop it up
and I add it to my salads just because of
the nutrients, but I've never really eaten it plain. And
I don't really do yogurt because I don't do dairy,
but there is certain forms of yogurt I'm considering to

(12:59):
let back into diet um just from a for a
digestive the benefits of the digestive wise um. But I'll
keep you all posted on that. Also, here's another tip.
Add Nature's candy to healthier homemade dishes like sweet potatoes
and butternut squash, so when those are baked at high
temperatures in the oven until crispy um, they taste so good,

(13:21):
and they they are a little bit sweet. You can
also maybe caramelize some onions or do some crispy coconut
oil fried shallots. That sounds amazing and put that on
top of your salad. I might have to try that.
And then lastly, they say eat fermented foods whenever that
sweet craving kicks in, which kind of is like the
apple cider vinegar um. Yeah, I could see that working.

(13:42):
If you've got a sweet tooth, then you're graving something.
Just take a big old bite of sour krout. I
keep fermented um cabbage, so sour krout in my fridge
at all times. I try to have at least a
table spoon every day. Again, that's something I'll either just
eat plane or at on top of my salads. But
it's really really good for your gut, um really good.

(14:03):
So I hope that that helps. Definitely went a little
deeper with that question and answered it thoroughly because I
feel like a lot of us are suffering from the
sugar stuff. But Megan, I just want to encourage you.
You can do it, I promise you. And when it
comes to having a realistic timeframe, you just gotta do
what works. Best for you. Just take it day by day,

(14:24):
just know if you or maybe meal by meal or
hour by hour, however you want to look at it,
be like, oh wow, I made it this long without
any sugar. Day two, made it this long, Day three, Like,
don't put this crazy amount of pressure on yourself because
you're trying to make a lifestyle change. You're not trying
to just do some quick lamb bam thing. You want
this to like be a part of your life. You

(14:46):
don't want to just go back to the sugar. And
then oh, you also mentioned like how can I drink
my coffee every morning without sweet cream? And gosh, I
don't know. That's gotta be hard. I used to add that,
oh that amazing like flavored coffee creamer, like the stuff
that's like total crap for you, um, because they would
have amazing holiday flavors. I love the peppermint and gingerbread
and all that stuff. Oh, I mean I would pour

(15:09):
that stuff on. And now I can't even imagine putting
that in my coffee. I just feel like it's just
so I can't even pronounce the ingredients on the back
of the bottle, and I just feel like it's carcinogenic
and just so not good for me and probably was
making me gain weight. I didn't even know it, or
just not even feel that great and I didn't know it,
so I don't know. I used to put that trust me.

(15:31):
I feel you sweet, but yours you may be referring
to like actual sweet cream, like just milk and sugar.
But um, let me see. Maybe you could try some
of the liquids divia in there and with some full fat,
like legit full fat coconut milk to give you that
creamy flavor like a tablespoon or something that might be
really yummy. And that'll add some fat to your coffee too,

(15:52):
which might help kick some of the sugar cravings. Maybe
I don't know. Just try to implement these tips, Megan,
and keep us posted on how it goes. Okay, And
this email I got is from Courtney Uh. She says, Hey, Amy,
I'm a first time mom here with a one year old,

(16:13):
and my addiction to diet coke is starting to get
out of control. I would love to replace the diet
coke with something healthier that still gives me that get
up and go when I'm feeling drained. I know you
and Mary love matches. I've stalked your Amazon and I've
had all the ingredients for your machete in my cart
for a few days after pulling some friends. Many say
they love it, but others say, imagine putting your mouth

(16:35):
onto the part of the lawnmower that shoots out grass clippings.
So does it really taste like grass? Um? Okay, Courtney,
it doesn't taste like grass so much. I would say
it tastes more like dirt, but like awesome dirt. I
love it. I really like the way watch it tastes,
for sure. So I guess some people love it, some

(16:56):
people don't. But I would go for it because, yeah,
with the sweetened vanilla almond milk and the liquid stuvia
and the cinnamon or the pumpkin spice or whatever flavors
you want to put in there, which those are the
ones we recommend. Um, they're so yummy. So I definitely
think that you should just make the purchase. If not,
email me back and I will somehow try to find

(17:19):
a way to refund you for your Amazon purchase because
I'll feel really bad. Um. Or maybe you can give
the watch It to one of your friends that actually
likes it and just be like, hey, here's a little
watch a kit half your birth day or something. But uh, yeah,
it's so good and I add the vital proteins. That's
where I put it, and I get a little collagen
um while I'm drinking my macha. And I know you

(17:40):
also asked in the email Courtney if I purchased the
Vital Proteins off Amazon, and I do, but you mentioned
seeing several shady reviews about the quality of the powder
people have received. I ordered off Amazon and have been
a satisfied customer, so at least the ones that I
have linked on my Amazon page should be fine. Um.
But if you want to find it in a store,

(18:01):
go for it. But I have had great, a great
experience ordering it off Amazon, so good luck with the macha.
I love how you're like, does it taste like grass?
And I'm like, Nope, it tastes like dirt, but like
a good, yummy dirt. Am I right about that? Macha lovers?
Am I right? Or? Am I right? This is from
Caitlin and Iowa. Hey, Amy, First off, love your podcast.
I love that you tackle all the issues, both good

(18:23):
and bad. I always look forward to a new episode.
My dog has been my baby since I was sixteen.
We've been through a lot together, from my first car
to her first car ride, high school, college graduation, college graduation. Sorry,
can't talk dating and marriage. She's my writer die. She's
been diagnosed with terminal illness and I'm really struggling. How
did you deal with Josie aging and the loss of

(18:45):
your fur baby? I love your advice, and Caitlin, I
saw your email actually after I already head posted an
episode last week about this, so um, I'm glad I
came across this, and I can just refer you back
to last Thursday's four Things pod cast. It's from April.
I shared some steps on how to prepare for the
loss of your dogs, so hopefully that will help. UM.

(19:07):
Definitely feel free right now. I know it's not easy,
but just a lot of quality time, take a lot
of pictures. But again, you can go back to that
podcast to and check that out and let me see. Okay,
that looks like that's the last email for this week's episode,
So hopefully helpful information for some of you, um, maybe
one of you. Hopefully all of you keep the questions coming.

(19:31):
I really do appreciate them. Four Things with Amy Brown
at gmail dot com. If you'll have not just questions
for the Q and A segment, but maybe you have
topic ideas for the four Things, like topics you would
like to hear about. I definitely I want to know
what you want to hear. This podcast is for you,
So I just want to make sure that you know that,
because I mean, if you all weren't listening or just

(19:53):
be sitting here talking to myself, so I mean obviously
want to give what the people want, So simmy ideas
and or maybe people that you would love to hear
on the podcast. I wanna start incorporating more interviews for sure,
and maybe I can track down some really awesome people
that that you think would be great to have on
to interview. So um yeah, with that said, I hope

(20:16):
y'all are having an amazing week so far, and I
will see y'all on Thursday for the four Things I've got.
Let me give you all a little teaser of what
is coming up on Thursday anyway. Um, I've got my
first official interview with Kale Junkie, So I teased her
last week. Um, kind of just like on a body
image talk that she gave about how to heal your

(20:38):
body with food. But I actually got her on and
she's gonna get vulnerable talk about her eating disorder and
what that was like at the beginning. So I've I'm
gonna divide her up into a three part series. But
she's at kale Junkie on Instagram if you want to
get familiar with her. I've got my nurse friend I

(21:00):
Merse Bobo Adam Bobo. He's awesome. He's coming back on
to talk about intermitt fasting and he does the I
VS here in Nashville. He's super cool. Um, let me see.
I don't know that I have the episode completely built.
But my friend Carla Marie, she's going to come on
and talk about being a female. She works in radio
for my same company, but in Seattle, and we're gonna
talk about being females in a male dominated industry because

(21:24):
we definitely are. We kind of talk about how sometimes
we're just misunderstood because we're just trying to like get
our job done, but because we're women, like it seems
like we're like Diva's or whatnot or bees, if you
know what I mean. So, which, speaking of Carla Marie,
I was on her podcast about a week and a
half ago and it's called Side Hustlers with Carla Marie,

(21:48):
so y'all can check that out. We talked about pimp
and joy and a splaw because those are like my
side hustles. I've got, you know, the Bobby Bone Show
and and being a mom. But then I guess this
podcast we talked about that too, So the podcast and
SPA stuff and pimp and enjoy these stuff that I
work on on the side, things that I'm passionate about.

(22:10):
So y'all can go check out her podcast if you'll
want to hear that she's she's super cool. And speaking
of squat, I'll just say quickly here that the customized
totes are done. Told you all that deadline was approaching,
but we do have pre made Mother's Day totes that
could work for you, or pre made toasts that your
mom might like if you want to get her four
Things tote, or we have cool mom you know, hoodies,

(22:31):
tank tops, t shirts. If you know anyone in your
life that's a mom, it's like a cool mom. Like
Mary and I were talking about it and you're like,
do you think some of these people buying it are
like the moms themselves, and they might feel weird buying
themselves a cool mom shirt, or they don't really care
because they know that they're cool and they're not a
regular mom and they want to feel cool. Or is
it like better as like a gift. And I feel

(22:53):
like there's probably both, which is totally okay. If you're
a mom and you're buying it for yourself, more power
to you. I love it. You are a cool mom.
Own it, But also too, it might be more fun
to receive as like a gift from someone that thinks
that you're cool, you know, so cool mom stuff is up.
The crop hoodie is my favorite, but I know that's
not necessarily everybody's cup of tea. But you can wear

(23:16):
um a T shirt underneath it that will hang down low,
so if you're worried about the crop, then it adds
like a cute little layer and a pop color depending
on what you wear underneath it, which I think could
look awesome. And but the tank tops good because summer
is coming up. T shirt is kind of our best,
you know option at the moment, like it's a well
rounded option. And then I don't know that we've ever

(23:38):
even told people that this is on the website, but
we added cool Dad's stuff, so I don't think we've
talked about that on social media yet, but there is
cool Dad in case you want to get a matching
cool Dad cool Mom shirt or something. So and those
are supporting the maternity center in Haiti right now at
Project Meta Share, which Mary and I and my husband
we're planning our trip to Haiti and we're gonna go

(24:00):
visit there, but we might have to take a helicopter
because Haiti is apparently really dangerous right now, and I'm
just a little nervous about taking a helicopter ride in
the third world country. Not gonna lie, but you know,
I really want to go check out this maternity center
and see the amazing things that they're doing. I mean,
we already know because we've vetted it, but it's like
it's so different to go there and be hands on

(24:21):
and like actually see it and be able to report
back to you guys who have shopped with a squaw
and be like, this is the amazing difference that you're
making with your purchase, and we can really like really
really really connect and speak about it in a way
that's different than just you know, kind of knowing the facts.
You know what I mean. Okay, now I'm rambling. I
will see you all on Thursday. Goodbye.
