with doctor Lee Warren called the Self Brain Surgery Series
How God Wired You to Heal your Mind. So we're

It's so great to be with you, so great to
have you.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Well, you really need no introduction. You've been on the
Godpod several times and we are going to link our
previous series in the show notes, but in case you're
new here, Doctor Lee Warren is a neurosurgeon who spends
his life operating on the brain in the oar and
helping people heal their minds outside of it. And so
he bridges neuroscience and faith in a way that creates

not just short term change, because that's the easy part,
but the true life transforming transformation. We have a beautiful series.
It's going to be four parts, and today we're kicking
it off with episode one, which is what is self
brain surgery? And you're gonna hear might sound like a
little bit of a broken record when we dive in,
but the reality is is creating this awareness that you
(01:45):
are already doing something anyways. So what would happen if
we took the steering wheel back from what our brains
are doing? Automatically, autoonomically, auto consciously. And we'll make up
other words along the way too, but we're going to
just dive right in. And so, first of all, when
it comes to this idea of self brain surgery, for
anybody who's never heard of this concept, like, wow, I
(02:07):
can actually become the author of my brain? What is that?
In short speak?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Well, so, the big idea is that most of us believe,
for the way we're taught in school, the way scientists
talk about it, most of us believe that how we
are is because of how our brain is. That we're
basically we get our brains from our genetics and our
parents and the things we go through in our lives
and then we're kind of stuck with that, and so
that however your brain acts, is how you act. But
(02:33):
what we learned in the twenty first century neuroscience, and
what the Bible's been saying all along, is that the
brain actually is not a static, fixed thing. The brain
changes dynamically in response to every thought that you have.
It changes structurally. The chemicals in your brain and the
structural ways that the brain cells connect to one another
change in real time when you think one thought or
not the other. The problem is, most of us think
(02:53):
the same thoughts every day that we thought the day before,
and so we literally do just keep recreating our brains
over and over in this same way. And then there's
a thing called neuroplasticity that we talk about that's basically
this idea that your brain gets better at making the
connections that you ask it to make repeatedly, and so
things that you do over and over become habituated and
you don't have to think about them as much. So
(03:14):
when you think the same thoughts every day, you create
the same brain every day, and you less and less
over time that you think about the fact that you're
staying the same, and it begins to feel immovable and
impossible to change. And that's why people feel stuck in their.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Lives absolutely, and that becomes the identity that they live into,
these beliefs of like this is just who I am.
And that's why we need to hear the practical neuroscience
that saying, no, let's call out that lie. That's not true.
It's not static, that's right. So you use the term
mind down control, Can you explain what that means and
how it works? Is it just dovetails and what you
were just saying.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, So again, most of us think that how the
cells in my brain work create how my life is.
But the truth is your mind and your brain are
not the same thing. And when you use your mind
to change the things you think about and direct your
brain in different ways, your brain response. And this is
how everybody's brain is designed to behave. So, if you
(04:10):
can get outside of the thoughts that you're thinking and
the things that you're feeling, and start to think about
the thoughts that you're thinking and the feelings that you're feeling,
that's called metacognition. This thinking about what you're thinking about
instead of just experiencing it. If you can get outside that,
then you can put your mind in charge of your
brain where it's designed to be, and you can start
to gain the high ground so your brain can start
working for you and not against you.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, everything you're saying is this underwritten tone of like
there's a new paradigm that we have to kind of
step into about our ability to influence this, you know. So,
how does neuroscience confirm what scripture has said all along
about the mind being renewed?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
The best example I can think of is shortly after
we lost our son, MITCHI. Our son passed away in
twenty thirteen, and Lisa and I worked together running our
neurosurgery practice at the time, and our office was on
the third floor of the building at Auburn University where
we do fancy functional brain imaging research on the bottom floor,
and we went down one day after we went back
(05:08):
to work shortly after our son had died, and we
were invited to watch some of this research take places,
cutting edge brain imaging research where you could put somebody
in the scanner and you could ask them to think
about something like think about the worst day of your life,
and we could watch them hear a command to think
about something and then decide to think about that thing,
(05:29):
and then we could watch on the screen as the
brain began to react to what they were thinking about. So,
if you're thinking about this worst day of your life,
all the parts of your brain related to fear and
sorrow and pain would light up, and then shortly after that,
the body would begin to change. The heart rate would
go up, and the blood pressure would go up, and
the people would respond to what they were thinking about
by changing what their brains did and then changing what
(05:50):
their body did. And then they could give them a
different instruction. Okay, stop thinking about that bad thing and
start thinking about the best day of your life. And
all of a sudden, the amygdala and all the fear
stuff calms down. The frontel ups come online, and the
parts of your brain they're involved in peace and resilience
come online, and the blood pressure started to go down,
and all that stuff started to improve, and it became
clear at least actually put it together with a verse
(06:12):
from the Bible and the Book of a Philippians chapter
four that says, hey, if you want to stop being anxious,
be grateful instead, think about different thoughts. And that's when
it clicked for me that that's the same thing as
I do in surgery. Like when I make a decision
to structurally change somebody's brain for the purpose of helping
their life, that's exactly what you do when you just
had intentionally to change what you think about you intentionally
(06:35):
structurally change your brain for the purpose of helping your life.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yeah, And it's like when you think about that that
happens one time. When you think about the cumulative effect
of doing that over and over and giving it that repetition,
anything's possible.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
No, And that's where the miracle side of things comes
in and where you know it's just like, Okay, God,
what story do you want to write now?
Speaker 3 (06:55):
That's right. It gives people this, It replaces this sense
that we are the prison of what our brains do,
and it gives you agency and choice and power and
how your life turns out because you're not stuck with
the brain that you have for sure.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
It's the number one thing I hear from women is like,
what if I am hopeless? Like or I thought I
was hopeless. I've tried so many different things, but when
I ask them, like, have you tried actually rewiring the
circuitry and the cause and effect of your thoughts and
your beliefs that lead to your behaviors. And when it's
a no, it's like, wow, that's possible. That gives people
so much hope, Like that's what I feel when you
(07:31):
share it like that, you know. So what would you
say about when it comes to faith?
Speaker 1 (07:35):
You know?
Speaker 2 (07:35):
And honestly, in a way, it's just a change of perception.
We're anticipating something good instead of anticipating, you know, the
fear of the worry, of the dread when it comes
to accelerating healing and when we're talking about destructive thought
patterns and how that comes into play as well.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
So we know now that negative thinking is harmful to
your body. It creates genetics, which is that hurt you.
It can hurt your offspring they aren't even born. And
yet like the more the more time you spend in
a fear based lifestyle or an anxiety based lifestyle, the
more harm you do to your body. And faith comes
along and says, hey, don't be anxious, be grateful. It says,
(08:13):
don't conform to how your brain the world wants you
to think, but be transformed by renewing your mind. And
then neuroscience comes along, in the twenty first century and says,
guess what happens when people are more grateful. They live longer,
their physiology gets better, they have less blood pressure trouble,
they spend less time in the hospital, they don't get
sick as often. So the more grateful and positive your
(08:34):
mindset is, the better your brain helps support your body
to become a person who has less trouble in your life.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, and it changes it from strictly this physiological conversation
where people are chasing symptoms to wait a minute, what
can I either destroy or create in my brain? That's right,
you know, and stop creating this cause and effect. No,
it's so so powerful and this, like you said, this
ability to have authority, right, and to take responsibility of
what we can influence, you know, give the rest to God.
(09:02):
But this is where free will comes in.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
That's correct.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
So what would you say to people who believe that
their personality or their diagnosis or their past defines their
brain forever.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
That's one thing that we're seeing a lot in this
generation is that we've all accepted labels and diagnoses for
just about everything. I have anxiety, I have ADHD, I
am neurodivergent, I have been through trauma, and we let
that become a label or a diagnosis or an identity
if you will, for our life. And what I want
(09:35):
people to understand is allow those things to give you
insight into the ways that you tend to make decisions
and the things that tend to upset you or the
ways that you tend to cause yourself trouble when you're
reacting to those things. But don't let them become identities,
because your identity is who God created you to be,
not the set of things that has happened to you
(09:55):
along the way. And so when you can choose insight
over identity, then you can start making decisions. Okay, I
know when I'm in this situation, I tend to be anxious.
So what I do to prepare myself for that situation
so I don't live out that story I've always been living.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Absolutely, it's just data to be able to give new
prediction and response to change the future, rather than using
it as evidence of like, see, this is just what
I do, this is who I am, and looking for
where we're broken or where our diagnosis is our limitation,
it's a completely different trajectory. So if people are listening,
and they're like, Okay, how can I partner with God
in this process? Instead of this being this self reliant,
(10:30):
self sufficient, I have to do it in my own
strength and might conversation, what would you say to them?
Speaker 3 (10:35):
I say, there's a verse in the Bible two Timothy
one point seven that says God didn't give you a
spirit of fear, but of power and of love and
of a sound mind. And so the first thing I
want you to know is that you were not given
a spirit of anxiety or depression or ADHD or anything else.
The world may have convinced you of that, your traumas
(10:56):
may ever convinced you of that, but the spirit inside
you is one of a sound mind. You are wired
to heal and get better. And in fact, we know
now from neuroscience and from scripture, we know that adversity
actually makes you stronger neurologically. So that means when you're
going through something hard, you can look at it as
an opportunity to trust God's plan and his design for
(11:18):
how your body and your brain are going to heal
and get stronger and more able to face the next
time you have a challenge.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Yes and amen, And that's a choice that we can take.
We can let it be a possibility builder or again
stand in it, and it's so challenging. When we're in it.
We don't think we have a choice, but we always do.
That's beautiful. And you've got a book like the book.

your brain is in charge of your body, and that
you can take command of that process and it's actually
