Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay, just a reminder before we get into the questions
that y'all can subscribe to the podcast and you can
write and review, and that's really how we keep this
thing going. So I really appreciate all of you who
have already done that, Like it's pretty awesome actually to
go in there and read the notes and see the
stars and I don't know, it just warms my heart.
(00:21):
So I'm glad y'all are y'all are feeling the podcast.
But I will take constructive criticism and people do email
it by the way, like y'all email me your questions,
but you also email me your thoughts and things that
I can do better or maybe even topic ideas, So
make sure you hit up four things with Amy Brown
at gmail dot com. And you know, this is like
our little community I wanted to be for all of us,
(00:42):
So feel free to say whatever. There's always a nice
way to say it, but I think that I can
take it. And UM, with that set, we'll go ahead
and get right into the questions. The first one is
from carry Hey, Amy, I'm writing you because I would
(01:03):
love advice. I'm a third grade teacher in North Carolina
and today we had a training where many teachers across
our country were involved. I noticed a fellow teacher in
the room as a cancer fighter. I was amazed at
her positivity and her way of participating, even when well
bodied teachers were distracted on their phones and doodling. I
want to do something special for her anonymously. I listened
(01:23):
close enough to figure out where she works, so I
would like to purchase something for her from the shop
forward and deliver it to her school. Do you have
any advice on what I should get for her. I
just wanted to know that she spoke to my heart
today even without knowing it. So Carrie, that's a super
cool story, and I love that you want to pimp
some joy on a teacher. This is what Pimp and
Joy is all about. So I would say, if you
(01:46):
know her shirt sized, you could get her a Pimp
and Joy shirt or maybe even a Choose Joy shirt.
Or if you don't want to mess with a size,
you get a Pimp and Joy hat that might work.
Or in our squall line, we have a cancer fighter
shirt or a four things to whichever one you want
that says chemo radiation, cancer Suck it. I'm not sure
that she could carry that one to school, but maybe
(02:07):
you could stick with the joy stuff. Unless you think
she would like those four things, she can wear it
on her own time. I personally happen to love them.
They were inspired by my dad, so Pim and Joy
was inspired by my mom. The cancer Fighter line for
the four Things was inspired by my dad. Which speaking
of teachers and four things, we are doing a four
things tote specifically four teachers, and Mary and I are
(02:29):
so excited about this, like super pumped, but we're trying
to lock in exactly what those four things should be
and really, right now we're kind of between, uh, the
four things being caffeine eate, which I know some of
you are like, I don't really drink caffeine, but I
would say, of you drink coffee or tea or something
(02:53):
before you hit the classrooms. So I feel like caffeine
eate should just be on there, um And maybe if
you don't caffineate, maybe you should, but I don't know,
Maybe I might might help the situation, might help things out.
So it's caffeine it teach them well, make an impact,
and spark joy. But a lot of people are having
issue with a spark joy because it reminds them a
Marie Condo, and I totally get that now. When we
(03:16):
first put spark Joy on there, I didn't even think
of Marie Condo. I just thought it was like cool. Um.
But anyway, we're playing around with some other things and
we will finalize it and let y'all know, but these
totes are going to We wanted to be an option
for teachers to buy for themselves or to buy for
other teachers in their lives or were like moms like
I would buy one for my kids teachers or something
(03:37):
like that if you're looking for a gift, um, because
I think it would be pretty cool. Uh Like it's
it's like it's just like an easy, cute gift. And
then teachers can actually use it as a little school
bag to carry stuff and which a lot of you
already do. So shout out to teachers that have messaged
and saying it's like their favorite work bag. We really
appreciate that. And then these particular totes will go towards
(03:58):
education in Haiti, so and feel good about that. But
we also want to do like a fill the Tote
giveaway where we take these totes and I cannot find
an easy way to say this, I'm going to simplify it,
and we will simplify it on the website so it's
not confusing. But you can order the tote for yourself
or as a gift for somebody else in your life
(04:18):
and have it shipped to you. Or you can order
a tote that's going to be filled and then given
to a teacher that's sent like nominated. We're gonna take
nominations like you can send in a cool story about
a teacher in your life and why she should get
the tote, and they're gonna win the tote with or
not win but received it. Ituse not like a contest,
but we're going to try to pass out as many
totes as we possibly can. But we need y'all's help
(04:40):
to spread the word so that we can, you know,
have the totes purchased and paid for, and then we're
filling them with awesome things. We don't know exactly what
it's gonna be filled with, but stuff that teachers love.
Like we have learned in this process that you'll love
flair pins. If you happen to be a teacher listening,
you probably know what a flairpin is and you love
post it notes, and we thought you might appreciate some
(05:01):
bubble bath and some gift cards to maybe like Starbucks
or Target or Amazon or whatever, because we know a
lot of you spend your own money on school supplies
at the beginning of the year, so since school is
getting back into motion, we thought this would just be
a cool way to show teacher appreciation. So the toe
will have like two parts. It's a tote that is
legit for sale for you to buy and deliver to
(05:23):
you or a friend or whatever, but then also a
toe where you can go on and you can like
sponsor a toe. I guess that might be an easy
way to say it, Like you just click the toe,
you pay for it, and then we're going to fill
it up. Or if you can't afford to buy a toe,
but you want to be a part of it, and
maybe you can afford ten dollars, there's gonna be a
drop down button and you can donate basically ten dollars
to what we're doing to pay for the stuff that's
(05:46):
going inside the toe. I hope that makes sense. So
anyway back to carry and her email. But since you're
a teacher, I wanted to throw that out there. I
think it's cool that you want to spread some joy
to your fellow teacher and surprise her at work. Really,
anything from the shot forward will be amazing. But since
she's a cancer fighter, the cancer related things make sense
to me. But I realized some of it she might
(06:08):
not be able to wear at school, So just you know,
if you find out her size, keep that in mind.
If not, a hat or a tote is always appropriate,
or a spla has super cute star necklaces. Like I
don't know her age or her style or whatever, but
our star necklace represents hope and spreads hope in Haiti,
and I feel like, you know, if you've gone through
anything in life, like cancer, you got to choose the joy,
(06:29):
but you also got to keep the hope, so or
have the hope or however you want to say it.
Next question is from Grace. Hey, I'm always so impressed
with your skin, and I know intrition nutrition is so
important to you. I struggle with a dult acne and
I've tried every trick under the sun, and it seems
like nothing is helping. I've just started my own health
journey and I'm eating much cleaner and I'm starting to
(06:51):
see some improvements. So I was curious what items you
definitely try to incorporate in your diet for healthy skin
and what items you avoid to keep your skin clear.
So um, yeah, I think that this one's important. Grace
like food play such a role. I saw a major
difference in my skin when I started focusing on what
I was eating. And honestly, sometimes if you're just leaking
(07:11):
on Instagram, like I know, there's like this guilty pleasure
filter that makes your skin look amazing and I can't
help it click it sometimes and then it's deceiving because
then I see my real skin and I'm like, oh man,
that filter is so deceiving. But but I I will
say my skin is is better now than it's ever been,
and I attribute that to a combination of things. But
(07:33):
since you're asking about, you know, diet, and I think
that is so important, I'll go through some foods that
are good to have for healthy skin. First of all,
Like I love salmon. It's a good fatty fish because
Omega three fatty acids are awesome to keep your skin
moisturized and thick. Also, like healthy fats, avocados are really good.
(07:53):
That's a good kind of fat too. I don't know.
I just feel like it's one of those things that
I read an articles over over how important fat like
healthy fats are for your skin, and walnuts are another
good source of essential fatty acids. I just keep a
mason jar full of walnuts in my pantry and I
go by and sometimes I have a handful, or sometimes
(08:13):
I'll blend them into my smoothies. But it's a fact
that your body can't make itself, so it's really good.
And they're richer than most other nuts. That's excuse me
when it comes to like Omega three and Omega six
fatty acids, So keep that in mind. Another snack that
I love to always have or incorporate into my dinners
is red or yellow bell peppers because they are a
(08:36):
great source of beta care team. And this is just
a little research that I was doing to find this out.
I mean, I'm not a nutritionist by any means, and
I want you all to know that, but I do
get the questions and I do try to research the best.
Sometimes I know why I'm eating it because I've heard
it's good, but I don't know how to explain it
to you, So I hit up Google to find out
exactly why. But the bell peppers, they are a great
(09:00):
source of vitamin C and they help create the protein
collagen which helps keep your skin firm and strong. So
I would say a bell pepper is such an amazing snack,
like I take it on airplanes, Like I cut up
a bunch of red bell peppers and I just put
them in a baggy and boom, I bust them out
on a plane if I'm hungry, alright, take them with
(09:20):
me and I keep them in my four Things to
or my purse or whatever. Broccoli is another thing that's
full of vitamins and minerals which is great for your skin.
It also has zinc and vitamin A and vitamin C
all good. And then green tea, which we know I
love drinking Watcha, which is a Japanese green tea powder
like every single day, and it's full of antioxidants that
are good for the skin. And you know what else
(09:42):
I put in there is my vital proteins. And I
have another vital proteins question coming up um in this episode,
so I'll address that there. But the collagen peptides, I
really feel like they work a wonder for my hair,
skin and nails. Now. When it comes to the foods
that you want to avoid, I feel like these are
kind of a no brainer, but we sa times just
need that reminder of like, oh, yeah, my skin is
(10:03):
feeling dry. Oh did I drink a little bit too
much this past weekend. That could be why, because alcohol
leaves you dehydrated, which can equal dry, scaly skin, deep
fried anything, I mean the excess oil and anything deep
fried is going to show up on your face and
lead to breakouts. For me. Dairy products, I stay away
from a lot of milk and cheese and butter and
(10:24):
milk chocolate because it leads to blocked pores for me,
Like my skin cleared up when I cut out dairy.
Coffee is something or any kind of caffeine, I definitely
consume it every day, but it can be dehydrating. So
if you do drink caffeine, try to follow it up
with lots and lots of water. And then another thing
that I think, like as juice has become a fat
(10:46):
is sometimes you have like fruit juice, Like people go
get to green juice, but they get, you know, other
fruits mixed in. It's not just straight greens. And I
feel like sometimes too much sugar, like it spikes, like
you have an insulin spiking type sugar which is left
behind your body, which can sometimes show up on your face.
I know for me, UM, I used to do these
(11:08):
Kimberly Snyder cleanses and sometimes I would get her juices
that had the fruit and them, and I would kind
of notice, like my face start to break out a
little bit, and I was like, oh my gosh, I
bet it's the sugar and the juice. And when I
switched to doing it just straight greens and no fruit
in my juice. Because when you're juicing fruit, you strip
away the fiber, which is really important and like it
(11:29):
it's an important component of the fruit and how your
body processes it, and then you don't really have that spike,
that insulin spike UM when you have the fiber as
bad as when it's just like you've stripped it out
and it's straight like sugar juice. UM, So just be
aware of that. You think maybe you're being super healthy
by getting a green juice, but make sure you're getting
(11:49):
it without sugar because that might end up showing up
on your face. And then also gluten, like I get
inflamed when I have gluten. I noticed my face gets
a little bit puffier even when I have too much sugar. Honestly,
if I'm having like processed sugar, I see the puffiness
show up on my face and maybe not even in uh,
(12:10):
you know, acne form, but just like my nose, Like
y'all are gonna think I'm crazy, but my nose gets bigger,
my eyes are puffier, like everything's just puffier. And then
I know when I take it out of my diet
for like two days and I flush it out of
my system, my inflammation goes down. Like that's just how
Because I'm very in tune with my body, I see it. Now.
(12:30):
My husband's like, I don't know what you're talking about.
I don't see it, and I'm like, I can tell
right away when I've been eating poorly because it just
shows up on my face and in my skin. So
you know, gluten, that's what it does for me. But
I don't know if you. I don't necessarily have like
a major gluten intolerance, but I do know I feel
better without gluten, so I do tend to cut that out.
(12:51):
So maybe if that's something you have in your diet, now,
try cutting it out. And see if it makes a difference. Okay,
I hope that was helpful. Kind of a long answer there.
Next question is from Taylor. Hey, hey, Amy, Um, I
(13:13):
saw in your Amazon page that you have the hyper
I don't even know how to say it, but the brand.
But it's a hyper sphere vibrating therapy ball is what
it is. It's like this green and black ball. And
she said, what exactly is that? And how do you
use it? So, Taylor, it's amazing. It's like this vibrating
foam roller. It kind of does to your muscles what
a foam roller would do, but you don't roll around
(13:34):
on it. So my husband and I use it most
every night, and some nights actually we fight over it. Um.
It's really awesome for my hamstrings and my calves. Sometimes
I use it on my back and my hips, but
mostly hamstrings, and because I really feel like my hamstrings
is where my back pain stems from anyway. But I
just lay flat, like on a mat in my living
room or on the couch. I feel like the couch
(13:55):
is sometimes too cushiony, because you want that firmness so
that it creates that pre sure. So my bed is
pretty firm so either do on my bed or on
the floor on a mat, and I put the ball
under my leg and then I'll put my other leg
on top of that leg to add more pressure to
the ball. And it feels so good. It just really
gets my muscles to relax. Now I can only handle
(14:17):
level one of the vibration. I think there's three levels,
but I think level one is just fine. So if
you're an active person, you're working out and you want,
you know, your muscles to kind of relax and recover
faster than I recommend you trying one out. Next question
is from Ann and this is that Vital Proteins question
I was going to get to. She said, Hey, me,
love the podcast and the Bobby Bones show, and my
(14:40):
question is about college and peptides. I recently bought the
Vital Proteins brand that you recommended. How much do you
take in a day? It says one to two scoops?
But how much is recommended? Thanks so much for your
information and for being you so and yeah, I'm just
being me. I don't know. I'm not an expert, but
Aaron is a big aeron Opria comes on my podcast
(15:00):
from time to time. My trainer she's big into vital proteins,
and she says to consume at least two scoops to day,
and so that's my goal. But some days I only
get one scoop. I don't know why, Like I just
put one scoop in. It's like first thing in the
morning and I'm not quite ready for, you know, really anything.
But I'm making maybe some black tea and I just
(15:22):
throw it in while it's hot and it dissolves and boom,
I get it there. But most of the time in
my Macha latte, I put one or two scoops. So yeah,
it varies. Some days I get one, other days I
get to but I at least try to aim for
that one scoop. So you just gotta kind of listen
to your body, do what it feels. Maybe sometimes I
split it up. I have one scoop in the morning,
and then maybe I treat myself to another matcha latte
(15:44):
later in the day and have another scoop which I
need to get. I'm going to do this as a thing.
In the Thursday episode the Four Things podcast, because Aaron
was telling me how the collegen peptides aren't a complete protein,
so you don't want it to replace there like what
you would do after a workout, because I was like, oh, well,
I'll just put two scoops after I work out and
(16:04):
that'll be twenty grams a protein, but it's twenty grams
of collagen peptides. Anyway, there's I need again, I need
to talk to her because I'm not the expert, but
you there's complete proteins and then this is like not that.
So I wouldn't use it as a post to workout
protein situation. Um, but I will confirm all of that
(16:25):
and make it a thing on a future episode that
you all would know, because that was news to me
because I've been using it I think as a for
like a year, as like a post workout thing sometimes,
and yeah, it wasn't maybe the best for rebuilding my muscles.
So I'm learning with y'all, trust me. Um. Next question
(16:45):
is from Rain Up. Hey girl, My question is about
dit nails. You said you try to wild back. Did
you keep up with them? How do you feel about
the extra cost. I'm trying to decide if I want
to get mine done, but I know it messes with
your nails and Rain now, I will never dip again Nope,
it's not for me. I think I would go even
(17:05):
though gell is super hard on your nails too, I'll
go gel before I go DIP. I did love them
like that first week. I was obsessed. They looked so amazing.
I loved how thick and strong they felt. But when
it came time to remove them, it was awful. And
my nails are still recovering. So it's just not worth
it to me at all to put my nails through that.
(17:26):
And I've been back to kind of painting my own
nails um the last week or two, but I won't
do the dip. So I don't remember the cost from
dip to gel, but if it is more than I
would just go ahead and go with the gel. And really,
I only do that if I have an event coming
up and I don't want my nails to be messed up,
(17:46):
or I have like a string of things and like
for a week or two where I just need my
nails to be spot on, because there is something about
having your nails looking good and fresh, like it's a
confidence booster. Like the minute I get my nails done,
I'm like whoa, And I feel like a new person
for a minute, and everything just feels right with the world.
So I will say there is something to be said.
(18:06):
If you need your nails to be rocking, then get
them done. But I would go gel. Me personally, I
would go gel before dip ever again, but that's just
my personal preference. I know some people that love DIP,
but I wasn't the biggest fan. So the order that
I would do would be do your nails yourself with
normal nail polish, maybe even like the healthy nail polish.
(18:27):
If you want to get all extreme, and then if
you want to be a little toxic, go jill. And
if you want to be like really toxic and then
it's super hard to get off, go DIP. It's really
up to you. That's my personal experience. Um. Last question
is from Tara Hey Amy, I started listening to your
podcast and heard your turkey sandwich story. Did I hear
(18:47):
correctly that you try to eat gluten free? How does
your body react when you have those quote turkey sandwich days.
I eat gluten free, but I want to try to
reintroduce some gluten into it. It just makes me nervous. Um. Yeah,
my turkey sandwich thing is I don't know if I
shared that on Q and A or The Four Things.
I think it was the Four Things podcast. But yeah,
over our summer vacation in Colorado, I was faced with
(19:13):
only turkey sandwich to eat for lunch and a big
group of people, and normally I would have been that
awkward person that didn't eat. But I decided to just
go for it and eat the dang turkey sandwich and
it was so good. But I will say I think
they did have a gluten free They did have a
gluten free bread option, yeah, for sure, So I did
eat that, but it was more the turkey. Like the
turkey meat I had not had him forever, and normally
(19:34):
I would have freaked out that it, like wasn't the
best quality turkey for me, or how is my body
going to handle? I mean, and the fact that it
was turkey in general, um, because I'm only recently starting
to eat whatever kind of meats again. Um. But I mean,
I just stayed chill about it. I didn't let it
throw me off, and it was awesome. So I would
tell you, I don't know why you want to reintroduce
(19:56):
some gluten but I personally still try to avoid at
it because I feel better when I'm off of it,
But I would say if you want to consume gluten,
you could try to make sure whatever you're eating is
really quality ingredients, because that's when I know it doesn't
irritate people's stomach. Like a lot of people here in
America that are gluten free, they can travel till like
France and eat the bread and the pasta and whatever,
(20:19):
and they don't feel sick because the quality of ingredients
there is so much better than what we have here.
So I would just like have that mindset um. But
if you're just trying to be less rigid like I
was being on Turkey Sandwich Day, and give yourself freedom
to freaking eat whatever kind of sandwich or chips or
whatever is there and not freak out about it. Again,
(20:41):
give yourself that freedom, don't stress about it, which will
then lead to you not over eating because it's not
a big deal. Then just give yourself that freedom, and
then see how you feel, take notes, see how you
feel after, and if it's worth you know, if your
stomach can handle it, great, If it's not, then to me,
it's just not worth the It's not worth the freedom
(21:01):
like I get having food freedom. If you're avoiding something
just for the sake of avoiding it because you've heard
that it's quote bad. But if it's something that honestly
makes you feel bad inside and like messes with your stomach,
then it's probably best to just steer clear of it, right, Okay, Again,
not an expert here. I just share with you all
(21:21):
my personal experiences or I try to do research and
look stuff up for y'all too, because I mean, I'm
just as curious. And then sometimes I'm full of information,
but I don't know exactly where I got it or
who I heard it from, and then I'm not the
best that like relaying it in the most professional manner
that makes the most sense. So thank you all for
bearing with me, and again, keep the questions coming. This
(21:44):
is going to be a rap for today's episode. But
um yeah, four things with Amy Brown at gmail dot
com is where you can send them, and then in
the subject line you can put you know, fifth thing
or Q and A, so that way I know for
sure you're sending a question for this episode. Cool, alright,
not this particular episode, but this every Tuesday, this particular
(22:05):
you know show that we do. Okay, all right, you
know what I'm saying good pick.
