Speaker 1 (00:01):
Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the Fifth Thing, Amy here, and
I'm will buy myself today no partner in crime for
the Q and A episode. Lately, I feel like I've
had someone coming in to like read the questions and
then I do the answers. But it is just all
me today. My dog is up here with me and
she's making a little noise so hopefully it's not picking
up on the microphone, but unfortunately she cannot read. So

(00:24):
I'm gonna be reading questions. I'm gonna be doing the answers.
Um I will say when you'll send the questions to
four Things with Amy Brown and gmail dot com and
you wanted to be for the Q and A episode,
put Fifth Thing question in the subject line like all
caps or something so that way we know it's easier
to separate just emails from you know, actual Q and
A episode questions. So that has a little tip there.

(00:48):
And I love all of the Christmas pull over orders
that have been coming in. It's They're awesome, They're amazing,
They're so cute, and I love that you all are
gonna be so festive for uh Christmas this year. We
are trying to get those made. We still have some
left in our allotted amount that we can get done.
So if you have not placed your order, you still

(01:09):
have got time, but I would encourage you to hurry
up and do so because once we hit that capacity,
it's going to be done. And you go to radiome
dot com or four things dot com to place that
order and just think of your favorite four things that
you love about Christmas and throw them on our cute
red pullover. And I love the detail like on our sleeve,
which you have to see if you haven't seen it,

(01:29):
it says SPA on the sleeve, which if you're new,
that means hope in Haitian creole, and our wholest ball
line supports Haiti in some way, shape or form, and
right now project Meta Share Education there specifically, but there's
on the red pullovers there's a little Christmas tree next
to us faw so it's just a cute little touch
that we love. So anyway, just shout out to all

(01:50):
those that have been on it and have placed their orders,
and a little nudge to those of you that are
putting it off to go ahead and get that done.
First question today is from Nicole Hey Amy love your podcast,
The Shop Forward and all the things you share. I
was wondering where you get your vintage t shirts from
their super cute so Nicole, those are so hard to find.

(02:12):
Velvet's Edge, my friend Kelly. You can follow her at
velvet's edge dot com. I'm actually going to record some
uh things with her this week and she's going to
do like a fashion and lifestyle stuff on the four
Things episode coming up soon. But she is good about
finding them at thrift shops, like she's really good, so
you kind of just have to dig. Uh So a

(02:34):
lot of times I rely on her. Or Free People
has some good ones. They have legit vintage ones, but
they can get really expensive, or they have like knockoff
ones they look like they're vintage, but they're not really.
Now I get it. It's still free People, so still
kind of expensive. But you know, sometimes like t J
Max or uh Macy's or Macy's has really good free

(02:57):
People deals. But sometimes you can find stuff at TJ
Max or Home Goods that are under the free People line,
but there it's not as expensive. So that's my recommendation
for vintage teas is thrift shops and especially when you're
in like a super cool town um, like in Nashville's
got some good ones or Austin and then free people

(03:19):
dot Com or if you have a Free People's store
near you. But I did get a led Zeppelin one
recently from Free People that's yellow and red and it's
definitely not real vintage, but it looks like it and
it's very cute and it's like from maybe it's the
real artwork. I don't know, from a led Zeppelin concert
back in the day, and I have certainly never been
to led Zeppelin. So be prepared if you get a
musical or a musician vintage tea or vintage look like uh,

(03:44):
for people to call you out on it, because I
wear a couple of different kinds, like I have a
Death Leopard one Elton John, I have a George Straight
one that one. Obviously I would know songs, but Bobby
says you shouldn't wear a band on a vintage tea
or maybe all the guys on the show kind of
say unless you can name four songs like or five,
But I mean, who cares as long as the short

(04:05):
as cute you do you. Next question is from Ashley.
I've got a quick question about a facial steamer. Do
you use one, and if so, how have you added
it into your skincare regimen? Now, Ashley, Um, when I
go see Carrie, who is the Nashville beauty girl on Instagram,
she uses a facial steamer on me and she tells
me that I need to get one, But I personally

(04:26):
have not bought one, but it is on my list,
and your email is finally maybe making me the nut
giving me a nudge to, like, you know, finally order
one and find one to put on my Amazon page
so that y'all can use it to But um, I
did talk to carry about the benefits of having one,
and you know, it cleanses your pores, It makes your
skin more receptive to other skin care products, so it

(04:48):
gets it real ready, and when you put serums or
different things on your face, it really absorbs what you're
putting on. It enhances circulation, can remove toxins, and can
promote relaxation. So all of the is pretty awesome benefits.
Right there, I think that I need to invest in one,
and you they're not expensive. Um. I mean I say
that relative like to something some people some stuff is

(05:09):
super expensive, but I mean it's not. I think they're
under or around like thirty dollars, so it just depends.
And if that's something that you can use a lot,
then it's awesome. And I've seen some of you are
using the drunk Elephant Baby facial that I recommended, and
that one feels so good. I wish I could do
that one tonight, but I don't know if I can.

(05:32):
I don't have time. But one day in the next
few days, I want to do that one at night
and then you kind of just go to bed and
your skin it feels like a baby. It's crazy how
it does it to you. But yes, facial Steamer, definitely
find one. If I find the one I'm going to order,
I'll put it up so you'll know, Ashley. But I'm
sure you can find one online or bed Bath and
Beyond or something easy like that next question or Target? Hello,

(05:55):
oh Target. Here our friend Ashley. She works she's been
married is best friends for like forever since high school
and um she also works at the Shot Forward, but
she runs an Instagram account called loves Everything Target, and
she likes to post things up there that she finds

(06:17):
and like really good deals. And here's something that she
posted recently that I even forgot about that heads up
that Target has a one year quality guarantee policy for
all Cat and Jack products. That means if anything you
buy breaks, tears, shrinks, or otherwise does not meet your
expectations anytime during the year after you buy it, you
can return it for a full refund or exchange it
for a new product. Which I thought that was awesome

(06:38):
because Stevenson has a pair of pants that her Cat
and Jack and they got a rip in them, like
straight up a big old hole on the knee and
he didn't fall or anything. Um, they just wore out
and we hadn't even had them a year. So boom.
Target has a one year quality guarantee policy, So I mean,
that kind of blows my mind. So I just wanted
to give you all that heads up. And if you
don't know the Cat and Jack branded Target for your

(06:59):
kids and your mom or dad, listening, hollow to that
brand because it is so cute and so affordable and yeah,
I don't even know. I know the question was about
facial steamers, but when I thought that Target might have
a steamer, it made me think of loves Everything Target,
and you should definitely follow her on Instagram at loves
Everything target. Next question is from Megan. Okay, Amy, I

(07:22):
have a friend who's been trying for a child for
the last couple of years. She has not been giving
many options from the doctors. How can I be supportive
when I have one child and another one on the way,
And well, Megan, this is hard, especially if someone I
experienced it on the side of I was your friend,
I couldn't get pregnant. It seems like my sister was

(07:43):
pregnant with four kids, and my friends were getting pregnant
and having babies left and right. It was definitely in
that time, that season of life where I felt like
everybody around me was pregnant, and I feel like I
would hear a lot of things from people, and while
it was well intentioned, it didn't really comfort me because
there was a lot of like just relax, like maybe
you're stressed out. It'll happen when you're less dressed, and

(08:06):
what's meant to be will be, and you know, like
at least you know maybe there's a possibility you can
get pregnant. Nobody's told you can't get pregnant, because really,
fertility doctors didn't have an answer for me and my husband.
We both got tested, we just were not able to
get pregnant. It really still perplexes me at times because
I don't know why, Like what, what was? What is wrong?

(08:31):
Because you know, sometimes you have an answer, but we
were left with no real conclusion as to why we
haven't been able to get pregnant. So we went the
adoption route. But when we were in the try and
get pregnant phase, like I was taking pregnancy tests like crazy,
I was crying every month when I started my period,
Like it's really hard. So you have a lot of feelings,

(08:52):
a lot of emotions going on. So my recommation, recommendation
to you as a friend would be to focus on
those feelings that she might be experiencying. You may not
be able to um, you know, empathize with exactly what's
going on, but like you could be open with how
you're feeling and share your feelings, including like your hesitancy,

(09:13):
so like share your pregnancy news or stories or stuff
about your children because you don't want to hurt her,
And then that validates her feelings knowing that you recognize
that and trust me, she wants to know what's going
on in your pregnancy and with your children. It might
be hard for her. But if she cares about you

(09:34):
as a friend, she wants you to know. But she
could be struggling with you know, envy and maybe a
little anger and confusion and sadness, and there's some anxiety
that sometimes comes along with it all. So as long
as you share openly your feelings, then it allows her
her feelings to feel validated and then she can open
up and share with you. And even though you'll aren't

(09:55):
in the same place, uh, you know, kid wise, pregnancy wise,
y'all can still have conversations and still bond over it.
And you know, I would say that you should respect
their need for time, like, understand that sometimes they might
need space. Um, they might need some time alone. Maybe
they don't really want to talk about it. And when
they are ready, then they'll hit you up to chat.

(10:17):
Just let them know that you are there when they
are ready. And then I don't know, I'm just trying
to think of other things that I remember. I'm out
of that phase, like this was gosh, when we were
we really really really trying to get pregnant, probably nine
years ago, was when it was really rough. Um, and
I just remember sometimes people around me would be complaining

(10:40):
about their pregnancy and I just so desperately wanted to
be pregnant. So in the back of my mind, I
was like, Okay, we'll least you're pregnant, so keep these
complaints to yourself. But I mean, all of us need
to be able to vent. So it's just be aware
that if you have complaints about your pregnancy, maybe don't
share them with that friend. Find find another pregnant friend
or somebody you've been pregnant that can relate to you

(11:01):
to talk to about that stuff. And then yeah, just
try to be there for them, communicate. I mean, that's all.
And then oh, this is another thing you because you
have kids, and some of other people on my computer,
just because you have kids and you're pregnant and other
people around you are pregnant and have kids, you kind
of start when you become a mom. Your social life shifts,

(11:23):
your activities shift, people you hang out with shifts a
little bit. And just make sure you don't leave that
friend in the dark, like make sure that you still
make time for them, or you'll have conversations of like, hey,
we need to be intentional and hang out, because then
they can start to feel left out, like you're just
hanging out with your new mom friends and your kids,
because your kids play with their kids and you can
do play dates and she's not really included and all that.

(11:45):
So I would say, just be aware of that. So Megan,
hope that was helpful. And maybe for anybody else listening,
maybe you're not in this situation, but who knows, one
day you might be and you might need these these
tips to bust out, because I have been there and
it's definitely not easy, but it's also just, you know,

(12:06):
part of part of life, part of relationships, So you're
gonna know you need to know how to be there.
So I'm glad you sent that in the next question
is from Marissa. Hey, Amy, Um, the wand on your
Amazon Favorites, is that what you use every day to

(12:28):
curl your hair. I just chopped my hair recently similar
to your length, and I'm struggling using a curling iron. Uh. Yes,
the wand the Soultra bombshell is the wand that I use.
And I guess also part of your question you ask
if I use the one inch or the one and
one fourth inch, and I use the one inch. I'm
pretty sure hopefully. I don't know if you click on
my Amazon page. Hopefully that's the one that pops up.

(12:50):
Would be the one inch radio meat dot com if
you want to access that, but yeah, that's the one
I use. I've tried to start even using a curling
iron and I can't quite get it down. Like my
hair dresser us as a curling iron, and I want
to do maybe a tutorial with her. There is a
tutorial at radio mea dot com that I did with
Kelly from Velvet's Edge from a long time ago, but
it's still exactly how I do my hair, even though
my hair is ways shorter um to get like beachy waves.

(13:13):
So y'all can check that out if you want to.
But I do want to do an updated video with
my hair person, leah Uh with the curling iron, since
a lot of you have curling irons and it's different
than the wand so we can help you get the
beach wave with the curling iron. So good luck with
your hair, Marissa. I think you're gonna love it short,
I know I do. I kind of put in some
longer extensions recently and tried to go longer, but I

(13:37):
ended up cutting them back again and I had to
put extensions in after um my mom passed away, Like
a lot of my hair fell out, like it was crazy.
I think I just went through a bunch of stress
and then stress on my body and a lot of
things were happening. And yeah, my hair was so thin
when I used to have like thick tons of hair.

(13:57):
So yeah, and then recently, um, I thought I wanted
a little more length, but I put the extensions in
and now I still have them for volume, but not
really for length, so I went back short again. So tip,
you can do that with extensions. You don't have to
just use extensions for long for length, you can use
it for volume. Next question is from Amy, same name Amy.

(14:19):
I was wondering if you have a facial routine for
your kids. My boys are ten, or and eight years
old and I'm noticing small breakouts and large blackheads on
my ten year old son, so I want to start
them on a routine. If you have any tips, that
would be great. Um. Yeah, Amy, this is a tough one.
I started to notice on my daughter Stasia, especially as
like things are kicking in for her hormonally, like her

(14:39):
nose is exactly where it will go. And as you
all know, like I'm a big advocate of starting a
facial routine as early as you can, because the the
sooner you learn to really take care of your skin.
When you're an adult, it's already gonna be routine for you.
Kind of like if you were forced to make your
bed as a kid, then you're more likely to make
your bed as an adult. And we're trying to instill

(15:02):
that in our kids. So far, Stashia makes her bed
every day Stevenson, and that is a struggle buss, but
she loves making her bed and he you have to
tell him every day to make his bed. So Stashira,
because of her face, we've kind of gotten her on
a routine of washing her face and she is really
good at it and it has helped those little breakouts
on her nose. I have UM these little like strength

(15:26):
like stringent, A stringent? Why am I struggling with that
word pads that she uses? Um? And I'm sure you
can just find some at Target as long as they're
getting that area really clean. But I just keep a
really gentle cleanser in the shower in a pump bottle
next to all their other stuff, so they've got their
soap for their body They've got their shampoo for their hair,
and then they have their cleanser for their face. Both

(15:48):
of them used that. Stevenson washes his face as well,
and um, then they've so they've got that routine down
when they're in the shower. But I'm trying to get
them to also like sushi or to do hers every
morning and night, which is a little bit of a struggle.
But you don't want to dry it out because sometimes
their skin is really dry. So I also have to
get on them for putting lotion on their face. But yeah,

(16:11):
a toner. I know it was struggling with a stringent,
but it could just be a toner, so um, or
if they have acne or maybe black heads you could
get Sometimes I get stufshi or those bor A strip thingies,
and she peels it off her nose and she thinks
it's awesome. And I remember when I was a kid,
I thought that was awesome too, But not that you
need to do that all the time. But I think
it just gets them interested in what's happening with their skin,

(16:33):
and they'll start to pay attention to it more and
then also think about what they're putting in their bodies,
like as they get older and hormones start to change,
like the way they eat could really affect what is
happening to their face. So yeah, water, that's another tip.
I will say that you know your kids need to
drink lots of water and that may help UM with

(16:55):
some of the breakouts that you know he's getting. And
then obviously I'm not a doctor dermatologist, but this is
just what I'm doing in my house with my kids,
so sharing with you if it if it ends up
getting bad, then I would definitely take him to see
a dermatologist. But at ten and eight, I know that
seems kind of young, so you probably don't want to
do that. And I think small breakouts and black heads
are are very normal um for teenagers and young kids

(17:18):
to go through. So I mean I wouldn't freak out,
but um I didn't. I didn't really have crazy, crazy
acne as a kid, thank goodness. But I remember thinking
it was awful. I mean, I thought it was so
awful that I put myself on accutane. I begged my
mom to let me go on accutane. And my roommate
was doing it and her dad was our doctor, so

(17:39):
he put us on it and I mean, I think
I lasted six weeks because it was so painful. I
couldn't even open my mouth to eat or I would
have to sip a straw and like can barely open
my mouth because my lips would crack. I mean, that
stuff is insane. So I didn't even do the full
cycle to wear it. Got rid of acne for life. Now.

(18:00):
Kelly from Velvet's Edge, I've brought her up three times
this podcast, not even really thinking about it, but um,
she did accutane a couple of years ago, like as
an adult, and she mastered it. So and I think
she still has stuff on her blog velvet edge dot com,
just in case any other adults out there are thinking
they may want to do it now. It is, it
does do a lot of crazy things your body, Like

(18:22):
you can't drink alcohol in it because your liver, Like
if you add alcohol too, it could be really bad.
You definitely cannot get pregnant on accutane. So I also question, well,
at the hock is is it actually doing to your body?
But if you're really struggling with acne or something, then
I could see you know, wanting to to test it out. Um,

(18:44):
if you tried other methods listen. I know sometimes I
try to be like the holistic Queen, and that's you know,
that's the way to go. But I've also tried other
things and have friends that have tried other things. So
my job is just kind of give you stuff that
I've seen in my life. So UM, I do know
as adults, a lot of times people wonder if they

(19:04):
should do accutane, and Kelly is a person that you
can go to for that. Maybe some that's something I'll
discuss with her when she comes to do a little
sit down with me and we record a few things
for the Thursday episodes. I think I'm gonna do three
different things that there want to be like fashion. We
talked about doing another one about just being like busy
women and trying to maintain friendships. Um, because she's a

(19:27):
close friend of mine, but I feel like we struggle
with seeing each other a lot because she is on
the road a lot for her job. And then maybe
we can make like facial stuff and accutane and her
tips for that like a thing, But I don't really
know if that would be interesting to a lot of people.
We probably could just send you to her blog if
if you wanted that information. Um. But anyway, that is

(19:48):
it for today's Q and A episode. I have got
to go. Um. But yeah, I appreciate you all listening
to the podcast, downloading, subscribing, rating, reviewing, listening to me ramble.
You know, a girl sent posted something on Instagram which
I thought was really sweet. She posted that she really

(20:08):
liked listening to my podcast, but then she didn't like it.
My sister was on when when we rambled, and then
she tagged my sister so that my sister would see it.
And I don't think she really meant anything rude by it,
because she was just implying she didn't like it when
we rambled, which technically isn't rude, but it's just her opinion.
But my sister was like, oh yeah, I mean my
sister doesn't really get tagged and a lot of stuff.
So she's like, oh yeah, someone tagged me and she

(20:30):
clicked on it, and then it was sort of something
negative about her, like, and I said, oh, Christie, don't
take it personal like it was negative about me. They
just don't like listening to us ramble, which I mean
I ramble all the time, Like I'm rambling right now.
I could have ended this podcast probably five minutes ago,
but I'm still rambling. And you know, if you're not
into it, that's okay, you don't. You don't have to listen,

(20:51):
but we can take constructive criticism. But I can guarantee
you all when my sister comes on the podcast, I
apologize in advance. We are going to ramble. And Sister,
if you're listening to this, I love you and I
love your rambles. And it's Monday when I'm recording this,
um Tuesday when this will go up. But it is
your birthday today, Monday, October, So happy birthday. I hope

(21:14):
you had the best day. And I know it's not
always easy because my my, oh that's my dog, my
talk just knocked something over. Sorry. I know it's not
always easy, sister, because my sister's birthday falls the day
after we lost our mom, like literally Mom died on
and my sister's birthday. So it's just a weird time

(21:37):
of probably a lot of different emotions and feelings. But
I'm so thankful that you were born, Christie, and I
love you, and um, I have gotten through so much
in life having you as my sister, and you make
me stronger and I'm very proud of you and fun
things that are happening for you, and you're cute little
coffee shop, roothouse coffee and pagosas out out and some

(22:02):
secret well not really secret, but possibly some TV stuff
might be in the works for my sister and her family,
which is so crazy, and I will keep you all
posted on that. It's kind of weird. Um. And then
if you're listening to this too, we do need to
talk because we need to create a four Things tote
for the coffee shop that is winter. We had a
four Things tote summer bag at your coffee shop and

(22:25):
we need to create the winter one, So be thinking
of those four things and Mary and I we have
some cool collapse coming up with the totes, like we've
got them at the coffee shop. We have another really
cool place so we're gonna be putting on hopefully in Nashville.
We have to finalize that meeting, but it's someplace that
is really, really, really cool, so we're excited about that.
And a collaboration with the c m A s the

(22:47):
c m A Awards, which is crazy. So cool things
happening with four four things for things totes, um, So
we love when y'all post your bag. So if you
have a toe, post on Instagram and is the hashtag
for things tote so that we can see them, and
maybe I'll repost you on Chopping Spa. And if y'all
aren't following Shop a Spaw on Instagram, you totally should. Okay,

(23:09):
now I'm done rambling. For sure he's out
