Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the Fifth Thing. This is the
bonus episode to the Four Things podcast, where I share
emails that you have sent in either answer questions or
maybe just share something encouraging or inspiring that you shared
with me that I think will be good for everybody.
I'm amy and super happy to be here. And also
I got to spend some time going through some of
(00:25):
the emails yesterday, and it was so awesome just to
see how many of you sign off like you send
me a note, but then you know, instead of saying
love or sincerely or whatever, you just sign it your friend.
I had multiple emails that said your friend, and I thought,
that's awesome. That makes you feel like this podcast thing
(00:46):
is working. I want to connect with you all on
that level to where it does feel like a friendship
or even on the Bobby Bones show, that's how we've
always been. We talk as a group of friends just
sitting around, and we hope that you'll be listening to
us while you're in your car on your way to work,
feeling like you're also listening to your friends having a conversation.
So the first email that I'm going to get into
(01:07):
actually signed your friends. So I just wanted to say,
if you'll want to do that when you're emailing me,
that is something that can kind of be our thing.
And the email is four Things with Amy Brown at
gmail dot com in case you didn't even know that
that existed and that you could reach out to me
in that way on Instagram, I'm at radio Amy. Okay.
So we always start these episodes off with a quote,
(01:27):
and this one is from Richard J. Foster. He said,
when we determined to dwell on the good and excellent
things in life, we will be so full of those
things that they will tend to swallow our problems. And
that falls in line with the whole gratitude thing that
we talk about a lot here on the podcast. So
much So, Yeah, we have a four things gratitude journal.
(01:49):
And I know that sometimes when things are really hard,
depending on what's going on, it's hard to think about
things that could be awesome in your life. But when
you sit down and do it, I think you'll be
surprised what really just starts to flow. And Mary and
I wanted to keep it simple doing four things because
that wasn't overwhelming to us, so start there. But maybe
(02:10):
if four things is overwhelming to you start with one thing.
Just get out a pen and paper and try one
thing a day. I know, for my mom, and I've
told this story on the podcast before, towards the end
of her life, we knew that she was going to
be dying soon because she had cancer and things were
not going well. So she was in these therapy sessions
trying to walk her through what her in days should
(02:31):
look like, which was really weird. I mean, having to
prepare for your death. It was such a bizarre time.
But also I'm thankful for it because we were able
to prepare and like have really big conversations with her
that we had never had before. But anyway, one of
the assignments from the therapist was my mom had to
list out fifty things that she was grateful for, and
(02:53):
I think my mom made it to sixteen before she
passed away. It was very overwhelming for her her, especially
with all that was going on, but I mean, she
tried her best to do the assignment before giving up
on it. But I do think that had she really
been able to not get overwhelmed by the number fifty,
(03:13):
if I could go back to that therapist, I might
advise her to, like, hey, maybe have my mom every
day say one thing that she's thankful for instead of
giving her this notebook one through fifty and she's supposed
to write down all these things. And my sister and
I love to joke about the fact that my sister
was on the list. Yogurt was on the list. There
was a couple of other people and things very random
(03:35):
on the list. And I, at the time of this assignment,
was my mom's primary caregiver. My sister and I would
take turns, but I was home from Nashville in Austin,
staying with my mom doing all the things. Pretty sure,
I drove her to that therapy appointment and I didn't
make the list of the sixteen things that she put down.
(03:56):
And by the way, I need to remind you that
you know, she had to get to fifty and she
wasn't able to get there. So anyway, that's our little
family joke. All that to say, if you're overwhelmed even
by four things, start with one thing, and really what
you'll see is that it will start to swallow some
of your problems because even though there maybe whatever it
(04:18):
is going on in your life, there's still are things
that are good and that you can focus on. All Right,
I'm gonna get into that email. I was telling you
about that signed it your friend, and I didn't even
know I was going to end up talking about my
mom there during that. But the email also has to
do with my mom too, Dearest Amy. As I write
this email, I feel like I'm writing a friend. I
know you don't know me, but I look forward to
(04:39):
every four Things episode and every fifth Thing one too.
I share things from your podcast and I tell them
it's from my friend Amy. Well, things have happened this
year and I'm not able to actually set up a
Christmas tree your deck r at my house. I actually
would like to make my house smell like the holidays.
And I remember last year you shared a recipe that
your mom used to make that would make that smell.
(05:00):
I was wondering if you could share that with us again.
My heart is needing something holiday in my home, and
I figured, why not my friend's mom's recipe. Thanks for
everything you do, Amy, your friend Kayla see how she
used the word friend that I was talking about. I
absolutely love that. And I feel like if you're sharing
things with your friends and you say you got it
from your friend, Amy, that's totally fine. You don't need
(05:21):
to go into Well, I've thought it from this girl
that's on the radio that I've never met. I don't
even know. No, we can be friends. Mike D's in
here as I'm recording this right now, right, we're friends, right, Mikey.
We're friends with our listeners with ye yep, like that's
how Bobby likes to be. You like to be lunchbox Eddie,
all the people. Okay, So okay, Like to answer your question,
(05:42):
I do have the recipe here for you. I went
through some old emails from my mom back in the
day to try to find it and I couldn't. But
I texted my sister and I got it. And really,
I feel like that's just something about being a younger sister,
as I never had to write it down or be
responsible about it. Every year, I just text my sister
or call her and ask her for it. And I
(06:02):
was really trying to get it myself. That's why I
went back into the emails from my mom, but I
couldn't find it. But my sister texted and said, here's
what you need. Cranberries, orange round slices, cinnamon sticks, whole clothes,
spriggs of pine and if you don't have that, you
can use fresh rosemary spriggs. Then you add water and
you simmer. You could simmer all day long as long
(06:23):
as your home and just keep adding water throughout the
day as needed. You don't need a lid, and yes
it smells like Christmas. You can actually turn it off
and leave it on the stove overnight and then started
up again the next day with a little bit more
fresh water. You know, you could probably also do this
in a crop pot on low with no lid if
you wanted to, but we always do it on the stovetop.
(06:45):
So Kayla, hope that that helps and anybody else listening
that wants their house to smell like Christmas. It is
something that definitely reminds me of my mom and smells
so so good. You know, I mentioned that I went
back through old emails from my mom, like way back
two thousand and nine, and my mom worked for Taco bell,
a franchise that was based out of Austin, who also
(07:06):
happens to be my sister's father in law, so we
and my father in law worked there too. It's like
this tangled web we weave. But yeah, so growing up
my husband, me, my sister or her husband. We all
ate a lot of Taco Bell as kids. But anyway,
my mom was his assistant and their motto at the
company was here to serve because they really they served people,
(07:27):
and they served people well. If you ever worked at
a Taco Bell that they owned, I think that you
definitely got that vibe. But my mom's emails all signed
here to serve, and it just reminded me of that,
especially during this holiday season. We could all be reminded
to try to serve others whatever that looks like for you,
and it doesn't have to be some major thing where
you're serving people, but it can be something little. So
(07:48):
I love that my mom's emails reminded me of that.
And then I found a note from her that she
sent about her letting me know. She used to send
me show prep for the Bobby Bones show back in
the day, and one day she sent me a note
you can use this for prep. This was in two
thousand and nine. I just got back from the movies.
I saw Media goes to jail. We rolled in the aisles.
It is really funny. You should tell your listeners. So
(08:12):
I don't know if y'all are looking for a movie
that you need to laugh at. But back in two
thousand and nine, my mom was recommending that one and
send it to me a show prep. And while I
am speaking about family and another email that I got,
this one's new. It's not old, but it is from
my aunt, and I'm going to read you what she
wrote to me. My dearest Amy, I'm writing you to
(08:33):
let you know that I have declared myself your oldest listener.
This is your aunt, Caroline Moffatt, and I am ninety
two years of age and still choosing joy. I live
at home with my wonderful daughter, Jeanie and Harrison Arkansas.
I have eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, with so
much to be grateful for. Your podcasts are so inspiring,
uplifting and full of love. I love listening to them
(08:54):
while sitting on my front porch soaking up the sun.
Thank you for all that you do for the greater
good of the world. I know your dad sure is
proud of you and your family. PS. Congratulations on your
podcast network love Aunt Caroline, which, oh that's super sweet.
She's ninety two years old and yes, I heard she's
got an iPad. And she listens to every episode. So
Aunt Caroline, if you're listening to this, you're awesome. Thank
(09:17):
you for all that you did for many, many years
for the greater good of the world. And I'm going
to tell my dad that you sent this email and
that's super awesome. So thank you. Yes, you have visually
one oldest listener nine two years now. The next email
(09:43):
I'm gonna get into is from a listener named Linda,
and she attached a picture with her note, so you'll
understand that once I read the email when I'm talking
about Hey, Amy, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.
This was my view of roadwork one and in Newcastle
it's a project putting in another lane of the overpass.
Work has been going on for at least three years.
(10:05):
As I go by it every day, it is a
reminder of change. I am struggling some but I try
to remember that I am a work in progress and
just like the road, when this stage is complete, another
one will be in the works. Good to hear you
on both podcasts this week. Looking forward to hearing from
you and your friends on future podcasts. Anyway, have a
good weekend. Still praying for you and yours take care
of Linda. So I thought that that was a really
(10:27):
great reminder for us that we are constantly a work
in progress and for her to drive by this construction
going on every single day and probably be annoyed and
frustrated by it in the delays, she took it as
an opportunity to look within herself and see it as like, oh, okay,
(10:47):
I am like this construction work. Sometimes, even when we're
a work in progress and we're working on ourselves, it
can cause delays. It can be extremely frustrating, it can
be hard, it may cause tears, but we will be
better for we're on the other side. And even once
we get there and our road is looking really good
now I'm speaking metaphorically, yeah, we may come up to
(11:07):
another construction zone ahead where we need to work on
something else. So anyway, Linda, thank you for that note
and that reminder. Thought it was good to share with everybody.
And the last email I'm gonna get into is from
a listener named Kristen hey Amy. On October twenty, I
lost my dad suddenly and unexpectedly, at the age of
sixty eight. It's been hard on my mom and my
(11:28):
twelve siblings, so I flew back to Maryland to be
with her for a few weeks and got behind on
your podcast. It's the end of November and I'm just
catching up and finding out that you needed to take
some time off to focus on you and your family.
I love this. I too, am in radio and it's
been so rewarding but challenging, to say the least. At times,
I've become so wrapped up in work and everything around
(11:49):
me that I forgot about the person who matters the most,
God and me. I recently found an Instagram account that
I feel would be right up your alley, and I
felt inspired to share. The account is at Inky Johnson Motivate.
He's also on YouTube Inky Johnson, Go Heavy. Thanks for
showing up. I often remind myself that there is no
competition because there is only one of each of us.
(12:10):
Even though my morning show goes up against yours syndicated
on another country station in Utah, it doesn't matter because
each of us brings something different to the table. It's
a beautiful thing. And I share my competition if you will.
I share your podcast, and I buy from the shop
forward and give his gifts as I want to support
my sister in the business. I recently got asked why
I would share another competitors stuff and that I'm just
(12:33):
advertising for them, whether it be your podcast or four
Things Gear or just something I heard on the Bobby
Bones Show. If we all started supporting others, we would
realize women empowering women is the most beautiful message and
we all have something different or unique to bring to
the table. All this being said, You're amazing and know
that you're not alone during these bumps in the road,
and know that when you return, we will always be
(12:54):
here for you to support and love you. I'm grateful
I found your podcast and what you've shared about your
sweet mom. I know that it has helped me get
through my dad's passing a little easier. Happy Holidays, Amy,
which yes, hey, I love that we have the same name, Amy,
And yeah, I don't know the station that you're on
in Utah, but thank you for still listening to my
podcast and not turning me away or anything from the
(13:15):
Shop Forward or four Things Stuff or anything that you
want to help support just because others might be like, WHOA,
that's your competition. No, we can all still support each other.
And I shared this email as a reminder to others listening.
Maybe you don't work in radio and you have another
female as competition, what's something in your life where you
kind of are having that mentality that you can't support
(13:37):
someone because of X y Z. I mean, because that
doesn't have to be the case. You still can reach
across and support someone and still take care of your
own business and do your own thing and be successful.
And I love that you put that about empowering women
because it sounds like, Amy, you are an empowered woman
and you are empowering others. So it takes an empowered
(13:58):
woman to be able to empower others. And I just
want to recognize you for that because it's not necessarily easy,
but you're doing it, and you're leading by example, and
by me reading your email to others, they may follow
what you're doing or hear what I'm saying and maybe
change the way they're navigating their business or their life
or how they support others in their life. And Amy,
(14:20):
I'm really sorry to hear about the passing of your dad.
I know that that is not easy and there's not
anything I can really say to make you feel better,
but I do hate that for you right now, especially
since it was sudden and unexpected. So I will be
saying a prayer for you and your family and oh
my gosh, your mom has twelve kids, so I'll be
praying for all of you. And I know my listeners
(14:42):
are amazing and they will likely be saying a prayer
for you as well. They're all my friends. It's like
me asking my friends to pray. All right, Well, that's
all the emails that I've got for you today. Oh actually,
as I scrolled down, I see one more that I'll
get into. I'll just throw this in here real quick.
It's from Kristen. Hey, Amy, I'm really in interested in
ordering four things items this year from my family members,
(15:03):
but I'm not so creative with words. If I remember correctly,
you've mentioned a cheat sheet with ideas for four things
that go together. Is that still somewhere on the website?
If not, could you post it again for the holidays,
and Kristen really quickly, yes, if you go to Instagram
under shop Spoa at shop SPA E s p w A,
there will be a post. A lot of times when
(15:23):
we post about the totes, especially come holiday time or
Mother's Day, Christmas, stuff like that. We will post the
cheat sheets, but depending on when you're listening to this,
there may be other posts. But if you scroll down
to a picture of a four Things tote that looks
like it has presents in it at the Christmas tree
and the four things are Texas, Lamas, Beyonce, and the Graham,
that particular post, if you swipe through the other slides,
(15:47):
has the cheat sheets right there for you. So hopefully
I'm on Instagram and you can see that. If not,
email me back and I will try to maybe email
you the cheat sheets, but you're getting on Instagram would
be way easier for me, So that would be off
some So anybody else looking to shop, that's where the
cheat sheets are. And yeah, we still have customized totes
and zipper pouches available for the time being. If you
(16:08):
want to customize anything, we have pre made stuff which
will be able to ship out for a little while longer,
but not much. If you've got people on your Christmas list,
let's start getting it done. I'd put up a gift
Guide episode last Thursday. If maybe you missed it for
some reason, I'll just let you know it is there.
It's Amy's Gift Guide, is what it's called and it
(16:28):
was last Thursday's episode. I had some guests on. Everyone
shared some really good ideas and hopefully could cover anybody
and everybody on your list. There's even stuff that costs
no money that I talked about at the very end.
And then also Steven, I'll have an update on Thursday
for you all about him. But speaking of praying for people,
you know, I mentioned y'all praying for Amy and her family.
(16:49):
But Stephen, who was on that podcast, he runs Home
Street Home, which is a homeless ministry here in Nashville,
and we were talking about maybe you could donate in
someone's honor and that could be the gift to them,
like a really special way to give someone. You know,
someone that has everything and you don't really know what
to get on, Well, that could be a cool thing.
He had some sort of a seizure or stroke. I'm
(17:11):
still trying to get the details. I know that he's
back home from the hospital and recovering and doing better,
but seriously, like a day after he recorded the Gift
Guide episode with me, this happened to him, and I'm
trying to gather all the stuff. I'll have an update
on Thursday. Who knows, maybe he could come on and talk,
because I know that some of you were curious. Okay, well, yeah,
we know we can go to their website and donate,
(17:32):
but what if we wanted to help the homeless in
our community, Like, what are some things as winter is
approaching that we should keep handy in our cars to
pass out to the homeless. So I'll try to get
him back on to help answer that. If not, I
will have answers from his organization. I'm sure they will
have ideas of stuff you can keep in your car.
(17:52):
But just be praying for Steven because I know that's
a very scary thing that he just went through. And
I hope that he is well enough to continue his
work here in town because seriously, they make a huge
difference with the homeless here in Nashville. Okay, I hope
y'all are doing great. Radio Amy dot com for links
to anything or shop, espoa dot com, the shot Forward
(18:12):
dot com. Mary New were laughing during the gift guide
of how many websites we have for things for things
dot com. We just want to make sure that whatever
you google like, you could get there if you needed to.
Y'all are awesome, and I hope you have a great day,
and I will be back on Thursday. Pretty sure it'll
be me hosting. I know, still have a lot that
I'm trying to manage at the moment, but currently should
(18:34):
be me hosting this Thursday's podcast. So I hope you
all are doing well. Talk to you soon. By
