Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the fifth Thing. My sister is
here with me, and we're gonna do something different today.
I've got like rapid fire type situation questions, although some
answers might be quick and some might have a little
bit more depth to them. But I put up the
little Q and a box on Instagram and got a
lot of questions. Won't be able to grow all of
them here, but maybe I'll address them over a period
(00:26):
of different episodes. But I thought this would be a
fun way to answer questions. We always start the Tuesday
episode off with a quote, though, and I recently got
a new puzzle from my friend Gracie. It was a
gift and it's a Dolly pardon and a rainbow, and
it's really cute and there's a quote on the top
of it, which is a Dolly quote, and it says,
if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with
(00:47):
the rain So Christie and I are, well, you haven't
really been helping me with that puzzle. I'm not a
huge puzzle person, but you're the one that triggered my puzzle.
I don't remember why I even brought you a puzzle.
Oh you know what, actually brought that puzzle to Stashira.
Oh you did, because I came and I brought the
kids a couple of things, and I brought Stevenson something
little and Stashira the puzzle, and I thought, well, maybe
(01:09):
they actually both will work on it. Well yeah, back
into Simber, I even thought, why did she bring me
this puzzle? I don't like puzzles, but now I love puzzles.
And I haven't set up at my kitchen table so
I can also watch birds while I do my puzzle.
So the whole new you this is forty Well, actually
I'm not forty yet, but I will be forty soon March. Yeah.
(01:30):
I like to do puzzles occasionally, sort of like certain
times of the year Christmas. Well, I'm all in. I
want to puzzle going around at all times. So Christie,
I'm gonna have you read the questions and I'll share
some answers. Okay, So the first question is how are you, like, really,
how are you? I put that one first because a
(01:51):
lot of people get asked how are you these days?
And a lot of people ask that in the little
question box. Do you feel like you get asked how
are you? And it's just like what am I even
supposed to say yeah, because if I said how I
really was, it would be like a lot. I know,
so I get it, but sometimes you do want to
ask someone that because you genuinely want to know, Okay,
(02:11):
what's what's going on this week? Or is there an
update to this or that? Or how are you today?
Because every day is a little bit different and there
might be an update. I'm definitely guilty of doing the
blanket how are you? Two people and two friends? But
I will say on Instagram if there is stuff going
on that like hasn't really been talked about, or like
(02:33):
there was this season where I wasn't on my podcast
and people are like, what's up? How are you? Like
what's really going on? And it's like, obviously, if I'm
very much an open book and if it was something
that we were going to talk about, we would talk
about it, right, but we're not talking about it. And
so that question also makes me think of this guy
on Instagram, Brian Russell Smith and this real that he
(02:54):
put up and in the reel it says when someone
asks how are you? And then this was his response
here you go, oh, um, well, you know, why are
you asking? I didn't realize it'd be such a hard question. Um,
I guess I would say, sorry, what was the question?
Do you mean? Like emotionally well, I'd say good good
(03:15):
good yeah good yeah, and like the context of being alive.
Then I would say yes, I'm good. I'm good good
good good good good good. What I'm saying is, don't
worry about me yet. Don't me ask you? Now? That
guy is so funny you should go follow his account
if um, let me tell it to you real quick.
It is Brian Russell Smith, Brian with a why because
(03:38):
we have a cousin named Brian and he's got an
eye can sell with an eye? Or why? That's right? Okay?
Next question, Okay, where do you see yourself in five years?
That question is too hard right now? Next I mean,
I don't know. I've seen myself as forty five, oh well,
but about to be almost forty five? Yeah. How do
(04:00):
you tell someone you're pregnant when you know they struggle
with fertility? This one is very hard, but I think
if it's a close enough friend, they're going to be
happy for you no matter what. But I would be
gentle with your delivery and just be honest, like Hey,
I can't even imagine what it's like going through what
you've been going through. You're obviously concerned, So there is
a level of pain that you feel as a friend
(04:23):
or a sister, or whoever it is in your life.
So I would say you just approach it with compassion
and empathy towards that person, but you don't hide it
from them any longer than you would anybody else, because
then that's going to hurt their feelings as well if
you're doing it on like a public platform. Lisa, who's
the co host Aboutweigh with Me Lisa Haime on Instagram.
(04:45):
She has been pregnant for a while, but she just
recently released the news on Instagram, and I thought it
was thoughtful of her to include in her stories. After
she announced that she was pregnant, she put up a
story and included some handles of a few different women
that have struggled to get pregnant and been open and
vulnerable and shared their journey. So that way, if anybody
(05:08):
else was triggered by her pregnancy post, they could immediately
go check out some of the stories of those women
listed and then not feel alone. So that's more for
like a public platform I don't know that I would
go to your friend and be like, hey, guess what,
I'm pregnant. But here's some Instagram accounts that you can
check out so you don't feel alone. I just mean,
if you're announcing it on social media and you want
(05:30):
to be aware that other people checking out your feet,
they may come across that, and it's just a way
to help somebody out that might be struggling that day.
It makes me think too, of those graphics that come
out around Mother's Day when everyone is like posting the
pictures of them as a mom or to their mom.
But then there's that flower graphic that someone made where
(05:53):
it's like, here's the flowers to those that have lost
their mom, here's some flowers to those that haven't ever
been able to get pregnant, here's you know, it's just
being aware that not everybody out there online is just
having a good old time for Mother's Day or Father's
Day or at Christmas time or whatever. And I think
(06:14):
it's awesome that you're thinking of your friend and you
want to consider her feelings even though this is probably
a really exciting time in your life. Next question, where
did you meet your husband? We met at church when
I was nine, except for he didn't like me first
at all, like until it was in my twenties. He
were nine, I was nine and he was twelve. Maybe
(06:34):
maybe we're like, you're a little bit older than me,
but he definitely had a crush on my sister first.
And we've told this story before, so I won't get
into too much of it. But he flipped the coin
for my sister and he won, and he had two
weeks to win over her heart. Um, and he flipped
it with his best friend, who my sister is now
married to or has been married to for years and
years and years. I guess my Been, they're both named
(06:57):
Been had two weeks to be like, hey, you interested,
let's date, and she never caught onto any of these signs.
He was thrown down for that wasn't really aware at all.
So once his two weeks were up, then the other
bin was allowed to make his move, which he did,
and then they became boyfriend girlfriend and there's a lot
of stuff in between there, but kind of the rest
is history. Next question your skincare routine. I've done it before,
(07:21):
where I give item by item what I use. But
my sister and I are both fans of Zero or Zoe.
I don't never know the proper way to say it,
but at the Nashville Beauty Girl got us both on
Zoo products. But I will say that everybody's skin type
is very different, So there might be one particular cleanser
that you need that I don't need, or you might
(07:42):
need to use this kind of you know, complexion pad
that I don't like. Maybe you need more oil control
and I don't. So if you'll have questions about Zero,
then I would hit up at the Nashville Beauty Girl
on Instagram in her d M. She's pretty good at responding.
But also I always feel like I need to give
the disclaimer that it's not lost on me that those
products are very expensive, and I always try to remind
(08:04):
everybody there was a time in my life where I
could not afford such products and I couldn't invest in
my skincare in that way. And there are definitely a
lot of products from the drug store that can do
you wonders. I just would recommend you wash your face
every night, no matter what, wash your face in the
morning when you wake up. Serafi Gentle Foaming Cleanser is
(08:24):
a drug store face wash that I really love, and
then I would just recommend moisturize, moisturize, moisturize, and find
a good under I cream. Okay, when you got into radio,
where you star struck, I really wasn't. And actually when
we first got into radio, we were in one city
in Austin, and we weren't that big of a show,
so honestly, we didn't really get that many visitors. We
(08:44):
got phone interviews, which occasionally people would come by. I
remember the first person I actually saw when I was
at the radio station, the first famous person, she wasn't
even famous yet, was Taylor Swift. I went up to
the building in Austin on South Congress to do an
interview and I went out like an interview for the
Bobby Bones show with one of the bosses there, and
(09:07):
in the lobby was Taylor Swift on the piano playing
a song for the program director of Case one oh one,
which is crazy to me that she blew up to
be this big time superstar, but she was not then,
So I wasn't even star struck because I didn't even
know who she was. So I was like, oh, blonde
girl on the piano, that looks fun. And then you know,
by the time we got to Nashville and we were
meeting like Big Times superstars, you kind of just realized
(09:30):
that famous people are just like everybody else. So I
don't really get too star struck. I do get excited,
and it's not lost on me that we have a
super cool job, but I don't really get too nervous
or anything. Okay, all time, non country, non Tupac nineties song.
If I can't pick country or Tupac, I have to
(09:51):
go boy band, probably something by in Sync or Backstreet Boys,
maybe even Boys toom In, but that would be early nineties,
Like trying to think, was that late eighties or I
feel definitely the boy bands in the nineties the dances
or want it thou way, tell me why that's a
(10:13):
good one. How has therapy helped you? I would think
therapy has definitely helped me understand the root of certain things,
like understanding also why I feel a certain way, helps
me understand my triggers. And also a big thing from
therapy when you know you're going for yourself obviously, but
(10:34):
it also helps you understand others, which I think is
a huge takeaway. You can have more empathy and compassion
when you realize how complex we all are, what about you?
Would you have any Well, that's what I've been noticing
even in you, because you're doing obviously have been doing
a lot of therapy and reading and different things, and
I just see so much growth. And if I'm even
(10:55):
bringing something to you about something that happened to me,
you're wanting to meet a folk usign, Well, what kind
of trauma do you think that triggered in them? You know,
like what is going on in the other person? Right?
And trauma sounds like such a big word, but we've
talked about traumas before here on the podcast, and there's
little tease and there's big teas. So trauma can show
(11:16):
up in all kinds of ways, big or small. So
some of that stuff we were talking about might have
been even little tease. But I just I do wonder
some of people's stories and like, oh man, there's a
reason why they're doing that or behaving that way. When
I think as you grow in your own personal way,
you're also growing in your compassion and curiosity and other
(11:37):
people and just more grace for people overall. Yeah, I
had a therapist say the other day, my kids are adopted.
So we've been involved in therapy for a while just
regarding them because I know that there's a lot that's
gonna come up for them and one of our kids.
Therapists even said, continue to approach things with curiosity. I
(11:57):
loved that, like it reminded me to not be confused,
even though I am, but not to take my confusion
out on anything that's going on. To remain curious and
ask questions in a playful, fun way, because there's a
reason why people are acting a certain way. And that
could be with your kids, and that can also be
(12:19):
with your significant other, it can be with your friend,
your coworker. Be curious, and it can help you stay
away from being judgmental and just making assumptions. Yeah, for sure.
(12:40):
How do you stay organized with everything you have going on? Well,
Christie could barely ask that question without laughing. I don't really,
Or no, I should say I'm getting better at it.
I didn't used to have a system in play, but
now I'm using the calendar like you would not believe,
and we got a whole little system. I'm carving out
(13:03):
times I'm doing blocking. I'm not doing blocking in a
sense that some people do blocking where they only check
emails on a Tuesday Thursday, and they'll even say in
the reply, Hey, if it takes me a day or
two to get back to you, sorry, I only check
my emails on Tuesdays and Thursdays. That's one type of blocking,
you know. Mine is I don't like to block out email,
per say, I'm on that kind of all day long.
But I do get behind, and I do miss things,
(13:25):
and I'm the worst with text messages at times. But
I am scheduling and carving out times for different things
throughout the day, even my me time, my workout time,
my lunch time, because sometimes I realized I wasn't necessarily
stopping to eat, or I was taking too much time
to do that stuff, when really, if I would give
(13:47):
myself the scheduled time, and then I know that the
allotted time after that is going to be spent working
on a squaw or working on Instagram, or working on
show prep for the Bobby Bones show, or working on
Women of Our Heart Country. I mean, just really laying
it out. I used to just go to bed and
about to lay my head down, and I'd be like,
oh shoot, I forgot to you know, post this about
my podcast. I forgot to write the description, or I
(14:09):
forgot to send the audio to Houston, or oh, Mike
D needs this. And that was how I was living.
And then now I go to bed and I laid
down and I'm like, oh, yeah, at to fifteen today,
I sent that audio to Houston because it was in
my calendar. And then at three fifteen I sent Mike
D what I needed to do because it was in
the calendar. And at this time I called and caught
up with this person about this because it was in
(14:31):
the calendar. That's my recommendation to you, is like, don't
be scared of the calendar. The calendar used to overwhelm me.
And then something we also got in our house, which
was an investment, but it's good for us to be
able to see. But it's a digital calendar board that
I put at the doorway to our garage, so anytime
we leave the house or walk in the house, you
can see the calendar and it's d a K DAK
(14:53):
board and it's fully loaded with everybody's schedules, mine, my husband's,
my kids, everything's up there. And then you can even
customize it with a picture each day and a new
Bible Verse each day if you want to, so I
always check out the Verse and that's been something that's
been great for keeping our family in line as well
and people keeping me accountable as well, because I will
(15:14):
derail the calendar super fast, but there's people in my
life that hold me to it. Okay, this is an
important question. Can you do a whole show in your
Russian accent? Oh? Man, I don't know. Now. Russian accent
came from my Christie. This came up because when Caitlin,
you know, Bobby's Caitlin, was on my podcast and I
somehow got into that story about the time that I
(15:36):
was speeding and I decided to record a cassette tape
to confess to Dad that I got a ticket and
I did it in the Russian accent, because for whatever reason,
you and your friends would talk Russian and I don't know.
I started with one of my roommates in college and
we'd go to restaurants that she'd always order. You'd always
be like, oh, yes, I'd please like to have you know,
(15:57):
and she'd order in a Russian accent. I don't even
know if this as Russian. No, we don't know, but
this is how because you were our foreign language. You
were at A and M like you're for four and
a half years, and during your half year, your last
half year, I moved to college station and so we
would hang out sometimes, and that's when I was like, oh, hello,
(16:17):
yes we speak on Russian, so that's not nice. Semester
I lived with my roommate who would speak in the
Russian accent. Yes, not from Russia. No, No, Oklahoma, you know, okay,
next lision. No, to answer your question, I could not
do a whole show because I could barely even it
changed laughing at yourself and then you're like, wait, I
don't even sound like an accent right now? Okay, why
(16:39):
does your fifth thing come first? Weekly? So the fifth
Things on a Tuesday, which is weird because four things
are on Thursday. And then what fifth things on Tuesday? Well,
what happened was I only used to do one episode
a week and it was the four Things podcast every Thursday.
And then Bobby was like, hey, you should start doing
some sort of a email episode or Q and A
(17:02):
or something like that. And so the ideal day for
that I thought was a Tuesday, and it had to
be the fifth thing because it was not the four
Things podcast, but it was in that family, so that's why,
which maybe I should have done it on Friday and
done four Things Thursday and then Friday the fifth thing,
but then there would be two episodes in a row,
(17:23):
back to back and a lot. If you subscribe to
the podcast, then things will upload automatically to your phone,
and I feel like I didn't want to upload two
days in a row to people's phones. But this is
also a friendly reminder to subscribe, rate and review if
you haven't yet, have you subscribed to my podcast? I
think I was the first subscriber. Okay, thank you, and
(17:43):
I also left a review, thank you five stars probably okay, absolutely,
I only leave five stars if I'm going to yeah,
we should talk about that thing. Oh, we're going to
do a thing about that. We'll record that and save
it for a Four Things episode because my sister and
I we do we have this whole thing on rating
and reviewing businesses and like when taking it too far
(18:04):
is just a little too far. And you'all know I
have a thing I tell you if you have something
really really serious to tell me that's just rude And
by serious, yeah, I mean rude. Right then email it
to me. I want your feedback, but if you can't
do it in a nice constructive way and you want
to bring down my rating and review with your negativity,
because it's not like I'm I'm ruining your life in
(18:26):
any way, shape or form. And if I was, then okay,
and it's certainly not your intentions. No, anyway, Christie, and
I'll do a whole thing on that. And well, I'll
save it for an episode. What are four of your
favorite things right now? I would say, Well, my new
Dolly puzzle. I love that. That will love Dolly right now,
grat my Gratitude Journal because we're in the middle of
(18:47):
the Gratitude Challenge and I'm using that every night, and
it's really cool to see everybody else writing down four
things they're thankful for every day and posting it so
that we can see it. And well, Christie, you you
would be one of the four things right now because
currently you're visiting me and that's been special. And then
the fourth thing I'm thankful for right now would be Parenthood.
(19:08):
I'm so obsessed with that show. It's so good. If
you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you
go and why the coast of Spain, because I was
supposed to go to Spain to study abroad in two
thousand and one when September eleventh happened, Well, it was
going to be the following semester, so I was going
through a program at Texas A and M for my
Spanish credits, and I was leaving in January to go
(19:31):
to Spain for that spring semester, and I was so excited.
And then in September, obviously the whole world just stopped,
and then traveling to another country just did not seem
like a good idea, and so the university canceled the trip.
Even though from September to January is still a few months,
but everything was just still so unsettled, and I get it,
(19:53):
like you can't take a bunch of kids abroad and
not knowing the state of the world. So that was
a crazy time, And honestly, I could to fit it
back into my schedule because it was my junior year,
and then I approached senior year and it's a whole
thing to fit that in. So I never got to go.
And I guess it's just always been on my list
of things to do, and I'm not someone that like
loves to travel the world. I like to go to
Colorado in Texas and stuff far off. Oh, I really
(20:18):
want to go to Wyoming big time, or Montana. I've
never been to Wyoming or Montana probably yes, because of Yellowstone.
But if I were to look at going somewhere anywhere
in the world, it would be Spain. Would you want
to study there? I think too late now, or actually
(20:38):
South Africa too. I've gone to Kenya, but I would
love to head a little bit further south. I feel
like on the coast, like I feel like the water
and everything down there. I just think it would be
a really amazing experience, like Santa Safari. Tint Yeah. What
is your favorite route house? Coffee blend? Oh? Yes, several
people did ask me that. Christie, I know their roothouse
(21:01):
is your coffee place? I didn't throw any of these
questions in their base camp is my favorite one for sure?
Christie's two. Yes it is. But we do have the
new one coming, but it's not that yet. It's going
to be good, Okay. Wet Brand are your blue light
glasses Warby Parker. They're just the clear frame glasses and
I don't need a prescription because still I don't know
(21:22):
for how much longer that's gonna last, but I use
them when I'm on my phone or my computer a lot,
or at nighttime when I'm trying to wind down and
I still have lights and TV and all the things.
But I do wear them during There was a time
where I was like on my screen a lot and
I would get a headache. I have no idea if
it's placebo or it's really working, but I do like
the Warby Parker ones, and they'll just put in the
(21:43):
lens that has the blue light blocker in there for you,
or if you have a prescription, I think maybe you
could get both things added. But I do love me
some Warby Parker, and I think the name of the
style that I have is Chamberlain or something like that.
So you can check them out. Do you ever feel
mom guilt for not making your kids one of your
four grateful things every day? No? No, not at all.
(22:06):
But I mean I feel like that's a given right. Obviously,
I'm thankful for my kids in those every day What
I mean, do you would you feel guilty not feeling it?
Feel guilty? I mean it's like a given that you're
grateful for your kids, so some days you're not. That's
just grateful for like specific things that happened with your kids. Yes,
(22:27):
like I have special moments sometimes, like I think the
other night, I was thankful for Stashia explaining One Division
to me because I'm very confused watching One Division show.
I like it, but yeah it's on Disney Plus. I
like it, but it's definitely confusing. I watched it last night,
I had no idea what's happening. Well, you need Stuhia
to explain it to you, so I I list specific moments.
(22:50):
You know, is there any other questions? That's the last one.
I mean, okay, we did it. There was a lot
that I pasted that I saved, so maybe we'll do
this kind of rapid fire again. I do enjoy seeing
your emails, though, so keep those coming. Four Things with
Amy Brown at gmail dot com and then also remember
our Gratitude Journal or are four Things. Gratitude Challenge rules
(23:13):
are very loose, so if you still want to join us,
it's not too late. Just get out any notebook that
you have and write down four things each day that
you're thankful for. It will definitely help shift your perspective.
I've gotten messages on Instagram that are happy that we're
doing this challenge, like I'll read one right now from
a girl Chrissie. She said, So glad I decided to
(23:34):
do this gratitude challenge. It's amazing to focus on all
the positive things in life. Was a rough year and
this helps. Other messages we talked about, Yeah how just
not really an easy time right now, but focusing on
things that you're thankful for has helped their perspective a
lot and help them stay positive. So hopefully that can
do the same thing for you. Yesterday was International Women's Day.
(23:58):
If you're listening to this on Tuesday, then yesterday, Monday,
March eight, we were celebrating women, but the whole month
is Women's history months, So just continue to support women
around you. Find ways to lift others up, find ways
to support women owned businesses. Maybe support women on social media.
If you have a business that you love to follow,
(24:20):
you know, make sure you post about them in your stories,
tell your friends about them. Or you've got a girlfriend
you want to encourage, send her a text message and
explain to her why she's important to you and how
she empowers you. Maybe that's your mom, your sister Christie,
sorry and I'll send you a text later. But well,
I did a thing. I did a giveaway. I did
Roothouse Coffee because my sister is co founder, a woman,
(24:43):
co founder of her coffee shop. And then I did
a women Empowered women giveaway with the shop Forward, which
Mary founded, she's a woman, and a Feel Your Feelings
mug which is CATS podcast Merch which she's a woman.
She founded You Need Therapy podcast, which I'll shout out
that too. I mean, she's part of my network. You
(25:03):
need Therapy. I know one of the questions had to
do with therapy, and if that's a place to start
if you're curious about therapy, listening to CATS podcasts can
familiarize you with what to expect if you were to
do any work like that. And then also Lisa's podcast
is called The Truth Eist Life, and she is the
(25:23):
one that I also co host Outway with, so that's
another podcast I will shout out, all women, all women voices,
let's lift them up. So see how you can do
that with people in your life. And then you know,
if you wanted to send them a gift, like something
that you could do is grab a back of coffee
from root House Coffee and send something to them. Or
we have these Empowered Women empower Women pullovers through the
(25:47):
shop for that you could get. Or you could send
someone a gratitude journal as a thank you, or words
are free, like I said, send them a text message,
or get a card and stick a letter in the mail,
like a handwritten note, because that's something that is super
thoughtful and that mean a lot. All right, sister, thank
you for asking the questions, and yeah, we'll see you
on Thursday. Lori Gottlieb will be on which speaking of therapy.
(26:09):
She is the author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone,
which is a really good book. Have you read it?
I love that title. Oh well, I'll give you my copy.
Read it. I'm done. You need to read it. Maybe
you should talk to someone you need therapy. I
