Speaker 1 (00:04):
Happy Tuesday. Welcome to the Fifth Thing with Amy and Cat.
It is Amy and Cat chat and yes, Cat is
a licensed therapist. Now, if you've been with me for
a very long time, you know the Fifth Thing has
changed a little bit. I've changed it a few times.
I've gotten a few emails. I guess I had noticed
when I'm going through things that are like, oh, you know,

(00:24):
it seems like the Fifth Thing now is just a
therapy podcast and not all of us need therapy. And
I thought, okay, well that's a good point, Like I
can take that constructive criticism if that's what it is,
or that inside that input the feedback. Yeah, to maybe
try to not make it so therapy ish all the time,
even though you're a licensed therapist and you host a

(00:45):
podcast called you Need Therapy, and I am in so
much therapy and I often feel like, yeah, we just
naturally gravitate towards that. But you're also capable of other
forms of conversation. Yeah, so well you know we'll be
aware of that. The quote I'm going to share today

(01:05):
is actually off some Christmas cards that I saw, and
one of them was don't get your tinsel in a tangle.
And I was like, oh, this is funny, and that
makes me think of I know that I'm going to
go therapeutic here for a second. But I've just had
several encounters lately where people have had their tinsel and
a tangle, like they are just not happy campers and

(01:30):
they're displaying it in public to strangers, and that's throwing
me off. Like Kat was with me in line. You
maybe heard me talk about this on the Bobby Bones show.
But we were at the mall and my daughter was
in line at cinnabun and this girl behind me. My
daughter was in line before I walked up to give
her money, and I wasn't even really stepping in line.
I was just walking up there to give Stashia money.

(01:53):
And the minute I stepped up there, the line was
not long, by the way. It was like basically Stashia
was next to them and this woman was behind her.
And I mean, Cat, I w you're you were an observer,
so I need you to share. I already shared it
on the Bobby Bones shows. I and I don't feel
as though I was exaggerating, but no one it's hard
to explain how angry she was. Well, we were telling

(02:15):
the story the other day, and I couldn't even make
my voice sound as angry as she was, like the
way that she said it did. She say excuse me,
excuse me, excuse me, like I'm in line, there's a
line you can't cut. And I thought we went just
like shocked, because first of all, my thought was like,
if you think somebody cut you, is that how you

(02:35):
approach it? So I was like, surely something has to
be going on here. And then you just you did
a great job of being polite, where I don't know
if I would have been as like calm back. Well lately,
I've had practice dealing with people in public, so and
I've tried to remain calm the entire time. So yeah,
I just calmly, kindly looked at her and said, oh,

(02:57):
I'm just giving my daughter money. And then and I
looked away because I cannot make I wanted to stand
there for like three minutes. So it's like the longest
three minutes ever. And she she definitely was like, oh
I'm sorry. She did say sorry. She did, Okay, yeah,
I was. So it was so awkward though, because I

(03:18):
think that she probably caught herself of like, wow, that
was uncalled for I'm assuming in her head yeah, which
I can't. But like your response, how you were so
kind back to her, probably made her feel some kind
of regret or remorse for being so dramatic in her approach,
because it's okay to think that somebody cut you and
be like, hey, I'm in line, but the way she

(03:38):
did it was yeah, she had wild Yeah tinselona tangle
and as though the holidays bring about a pressure that
sometimes we may act. Maybe that's normal from her, maybe
it's not normal for her, but either way, just again,
be aware of your surroundings. If you know you need
to take a few deep breaths. I mean, there was

(04:00):
the other day my son and I we needed to
get outside, We needed to be with nature. We needed
a break. So we went and we were intentional and
we went to the park and we took in the
trees and nature. We did we untangled our tinsels and
it helped like we both were in a better mood
when we got back in the car. So that leads

(04:20):
to my email that I'm going to read right now,
which is from Catherine. She said, I want to share
something that's really been distressing for me this year. I
just had a baby via emergency C section and moved
to Southern Pines, North Carolina, as well as having my
own baby girl, and that has brought up a lot
of bad memories that I had a failed relationship with
my own mother and we actually haven't spoken in eight years.

(04:43):
All this to say, I started cross stitching and could
not stop. I know, I'm only twenty six years old.
I felt like such a grandma, and I'm okay with that.
Much like a puzzle, I feel like it really helped
me slow down time and my thoughts and just relaxed.
I think it's something you would really enjoy. And there's
so many designs, yes, even birds, that you can do.

(05:06):
It's easy. I know across stitch can't fix everything, but
it's a good start and I often listen to your
podcast and stitch while the baby sleeps. I think you
would love it, so, Catherine, thank you for that. I
have zero desired across stitch at all whatsoever. But it
was this time last year that my sister brought me
a puzzle when she came to visit with her kids,

(05:27):
and she thought it'd be a fun thing we could
all do together. And I looked at her like she
was crazy because I didn't like puzzles and I said, well,
we're never going to do this. But it was in
that moment was she hit me at just the right
time of desperation, and I started doing the puzzle and
it ended up being amazing. So that could be the
same thing for crustitch or somebody else listening. If you're

(05:48):
looking to pick up a hobby I don't know, design
and just yes, you cross stitch it into a piece
of fabric, design it and then it's like pretty you
can it? Yeah, to make a pillow or something, can't you?
I don't know. I never crosstitch, but I haven't. I
would have a client who started cross stitching as one
of her coping and now she is like obsessed with

(06:09):
it as well. Sit there for hours and put a
podcast in and cross stitch well and not to get
like too therapeutic or anything with cat and I thought
it'd be fun to talk about things that have gotten
you through. How have you survived this year? I mean,
of course the last two years been a little talkers.
I'm personally vaccinated. I know I have some friends and

(06:32):
family members that are not, which is totally fine. Not
here to talk about that, but it's like, I feel
so okay, I got vaccinated. I'm kind of out in
the world. I'm not that affected by it, really, but
I just heard about a friend that just lost her
parents to COVID just recently, like last week. It's and
it blows my mind. And you know, my kids are

(06:54):
back in school, they're not really in masks. They kind
of just do whatever, and we're living our life. But
it is still very real a lot of places so
and for a lot of people. So I want to
be sensitive to that as we speak, anytime we talk
about that. So, how what have you done to get
through this year? You know what's funny is I honestly

(07:15):
am combining the past few years. But what's funny is
when you started doing puzzles then, Remember I was like,
I'm not doing a puzzle, and you were like, just
do it. My mom found a who's cleaning out our
storage room in her house and she found a Spice
Girls puzzle from when I was probably like I don't
know nine, and so I took it home when I
did it, and so I became obsessed with them. What's
funny about this is cross stitching puzzles and what I'm

(07:37):
about to say, I feel like they're all things that
you would think are like grandma, which I say that
in like the kind of like bird watching, like all
these things. But really I was sitting here thinking as
you were saying that, as I'm like, wait, one of
my things is I've started like playing card games, like
a deck of card card games, like not like you
know or something. It's like just go and get a

(07:59):
deck of cards and play cards again. And that seems
so like I guess, Grandma E, grandpa E, whatever. But
really it's just because they're simple things that we're doing.
We're doing simple things, and I've had some of my
favorite nights I think the last two years at home
with my friends playing cards er, what's you? Oh my gosh,
it's What's funny is this was a game that when

(08:21):
we go to our family reunions in West Virginia, all
of like the older people would all sit around and
play Yuker with each other and then the kids would
go play. And I always just maybe that's why I
think it's like a grandpa things. It's all these like
older people. I just thought it was like an old
person game. But it's really fun. It's like um Spades
but different. It's really hard to explain, but it's people

(08:42):
can google e U C h R E. Okay, I'll
look it up. I a dice game that I love
if people are looking for something to do is Farkle.
My mom used to play with her friends and it's
it's you can just order it. It comes in like
a little camera role film container, but it's got dice inside.
And that's a fun game. We've been playing, you know,

(09:03):
a lot with the kids, but also Pictionary, which has
been fun, and blank slate. You played fish Bowl? I haven't,
but we just got a fish speaking of a beta
beta fish male half moon or something like that. I
think that's the name of it. I don't know. It's
blue and send my daughter's bathroom in a bowl with

(09:23):
the door shut so that the cat doesn't eat it.
Oh my gosh, you can think about that. So we're
trying to keep that alive. And then both the kids
want a bird too, So that's how I'm surviving here. Okay,

(09:46):
so wait, but there's a game called fish Bowl. Yes,
it's very fun. You can look up the rules, but
it's like a charades game. It's a party game like
it just gets gets the mood going. I guess which
I think. Yeah, people are having different get togethers, especially
because of the holidays. What I've been doing lately was
getting me through some stuff this month. We'll probably ever
since late October when they came out. But it's just
Christmas movies from Lifetime, Hallmark, Netflix. I love that every

(10:10):
network has their own version and they're all so good.
Like I'm just and my kids will watch that. I
watched one um with Brookshields the other day that was
actually really good. Okay, I have that one on my list.
I forgot about it, but it's actually a good movie
my mental list because I keep one. Have you seen
Reba's It's called Christmas and Tune so good. Hulu also

(10:31):
is doing something cool if you have that. I don't
have a TV provider, so I use Hulu is my
live TV, and they have a thing where they've gathered
together all holiday episodes from TV shows, you know, like
How I Met Your Mother has holiday themed episodes from
all the years, and so they've pulled each one that's
a holiday episode and you can just go to the

(10:52):
show that you like and watch all of the Christmas
Eve ones. And that's smart and so it's still gets
you in the mood, but you're not watching the whole movie.
You're just watching an episode fits the Hulu go the vibe.
I know, I remember seeing a commercial for Hulu years
ago and being like what is this? And who? What
a horrible name and what a weird Who's ever going

(11:12):
to use that? I think Alec Baldwin was actually the
person in the commercial, and I think it was at
the Super Bowl they aired a commercial which was like,
oh my gosh, they just who is this company that
just paid millions of dollars to have this? And then
now look at now I use Hulu every day. It's
like Netflix. I never thought that was gonna be a
thing you'd like order DVDs and now like that's all
I have. Yeah. I mean my mom in two thousand

(11:32):
and fourteen, after dvs she passed away in two thousand fourteen,
but she was still getting the actual DVDs in the mail.
Was like, okay, Mom, we need to graduate to the streaming.
But even it's not like we've been streaming that long
because she was still doing the DVDs. Kind of crazy.
I know, you mentioned puzzles and now you're into them.
And so before you leave cats at my house right now,

(11:52):
I want to give you a four Things puzzle because
I'm doing a one thousand piece one right now. That's
you need to put that one to side and do
ours because it's five dred pieces. It'll bring you joy
because it's got fruit and doughnuts and Kara my dog
and Maggie my cat fish. We didn't have the fish
fish carry on the puzzle, but there it's so cute

(12:14):
and it's like, it's fine. I'm fine, everything is fine,
and it's bright and colorful. So I'm going to give
that to you. It's my gank to you a late
birthday present addition in addition to what I already got you.
But just shameless plug if anybody else is looking for
a puzzle and a gift that gives back our puzzle
supports Haiti and you can find it at four things

(12:37):
dot com. And I don't know, I'm obsessed with it.
I've already done it like four times just because well,
trying to put it together for pictures and different things.
And my mother in law came to town and she
put it together and I might have to do it again. Well,
that's the good thing. About a puzzle. You can keep
doing it, yeah, and then you can don't let you
get done with it, and you can give it to
friends or different things. But what else do you have

(12:58):
on your list of things that have been getting you through? Well?
So I had the card games was a huge one,
and then I had these other things that aren't really
like activities. But this is not gonna be surprised to you.
But when I was thinking about this list, immediately thought Crumble.
Oh god, yeah, I know. If you have a Crumble
near you, it's Crumble without the E on the end
as the cookie company, and they have the best cookies

(13:20):
in They're so good. So what's another thing that's gotten
you through this time? So this is not an activity,
but another thing that I am looking back on that
I'm like thank God for. This is my um stainless
steel face roller, which do you have one? Minds not
stainless steel. It's more plastic, but it's ice or something.

(13:43):
I keep it in the freezer. Do you have a
like a crystal one? It's like plastic. Well, I keep
buying the freezer and it is so helpful. I use
it every morning usually because it just feels good. But
if i'm having a bad day, I will just get
it out of my freezer, lay on my couch and
just roll my face. No, it feels really good. I
do do eye patches in the morning. No, I've done
ey patches one time in my life. Oh well, I

(14:05):
buy like a jar full of them. There's like thirty,
so one for every day of the month. Target has
some good ones. You can order them one Amazon, norchdrom
Rack if you have a norchdrom Rack for you that
near you. They've got some good brands and you get
it at a discounted price. But really, I think they're
all the same. So I mean, honestly, I've spent a
lot of money on them, and then I've gotten the cheap,

(14:27):
cheapy ones, and I'm like, okay, I have no idea
if there's a difference here either way. It's just soothing
to me to keep them in the fridge and then
immediately when I wake up, wash my face, pulled them
out before I put any face products on or anything.
I just put them under my eyes for about ten
fifteen minutes. If I want to go extra extra, I
take them from the fridge again. This is if I
have time, I put them in the freezer for five minutes,

(14:47):
because you definitely don't want to store them in the
freezer because they won't peel apart properly. But you put
them in the freezer and then you put those bad
boys on your eyes, and I mean, the coldness doesn't
last long because it's going onto your skin, but it's
just so refreshing and that split second, I like, want
to go do that now as a pro tip. Okay,
so something fun I wanted to do since we're talking

(15:08):
about how we survive this year, is do you ever
just type into Google search a few keywords and then
see what other people have been searching? So sometimes you know,
you can type in you don't even to finish your sentence,
and you see whatever Google populates, like what the Google
thinks you're about to ask based on what's asked by
a lot of people. So I put how to survive,

(15:30):
and then I left it blank. So the first option
is a zombie apocalypse, a tsunami, a plague, and then
how to survive COVID like actually having how you ever
searched those things yourself? No, No, it's stuff that just
comes up the most popular and if we take it
down a notch and just type in how to It

(15:51):
says how to screenshot on a Mac, how to get
rid of gnats, how to get rid of stink bugs,
how to tie a tie, how to watch yellow Stone? Yeah,
some people don't know what to watch where to watch it?
If you just type in how how many ounces are
in a cup? Do you know? Eight? Oh? Yeah, you
didn't know that with confidence? Was that not confident? With

(16:15):
the question mark how many days till Christmas? How many
ounces in a gallon? I do not know that? How
many weeks are in a year? Do you know that?
How many weeks are in a year? Two? Good confidence?
How the gridge stole Christmas? And so that's like, it's
just a fun. If you're you're different than mine, Yeah,

(16:36):
I don't know why on your phone or I have
no idea what makes them different. But they are different
for different people. But it's not Sometimes it is based
on what you previously searched. The more it's just random mine.
If I said how to get through, it says how
to get through a breakup? How to get through to
it does make sense to me? So I'm like, wait,

(16:57):
is this me? But I've never searched how to get
through to the eye r s, how to get through
the Lost Woods? I mean, yeah, so it's gonna be
different for every how to get through depression are very
fitting for you. So that's a fun game you can
play if you're yourself and board. Yeah, so you can

(17:18):
just you know, and then you can see if you
can answer any of the questions. It doesn't even have
to be how to It can be like, can I
pet that dog? Can I came up COVID twice? Can
I get a COVID booster shot? Will you marry me?
Will you be my bridesmaid? Will you press the button?

(17:39):
Will you still love me tomorrow? Lyrics? Will you talk?
I mean I don't know why I am just yeah.
So there's a computer active. You get bored with your puzzles,
there's your next game. Yeah, that's your next game. So
hopefully this wasn't too much therapy for y'all. Definitely tried
to just have a little talk and share with you
all at least things that are helping us through. You

(18:00):
know something I did the other night that I haven't
done it a long time, as I took a bath
and it was amazing. I guess it's the colder weather
that's making it more appealing. I used to take a
bath all the time, and then I just didn't for
a while. And when I did it the other day,
which I was out of bubble bath so I had
to use my son's Spider Man bubble baths felt like

(18:20):
I was like, okay, bubble gum. Yes, basically something really
barry and bubble gum like. But it's still relaxing. Sat
in the bath, took my computer, put it on the edge,
and put on a Christmas movie that was very relaxing.
So encourage you, whatever it is, make time for yourself.
Try to find this time if you can. I know

(18:41):
it's a crazy time of year for sure, but it's
definitely important that way you don't get your tinsels in
the tangle, right your tinsel where we started. And then
I will say, since today is Tuesday, December seven, at
least today that this is coming out. I know we
mentioned our four Things puzzle, but this whole my four
Things podcast only ever got name four things because our

(19:01):
original o G four Things item is our customizable four
Things tote and a lot of people get those as
Christmas gifts for people. I will say today is the
final cut off for customizing a tote. We do have
pre made totes available that make great gifts that are
already made and ready to ship, and they say different things.
But if you want to customize the four Things for

(19:23):
a friend or a loved one in your life, because
it's a really special, thoughtful gift that also gives back
to Haiti, today is the cut off to go to
four things dot com if you want to get that ordered.
And then like we've got cheat sheets that all put
up or at least they might already be up if
you're listening to this on Radio Amy that's my personal
Instagram or at shop espoa by cheat sheet. I mean,

(19:46):
we have a list of a lot of different things
that fit perfectly on a tote, and it makes it
easy because all you have to do is pick four
and then while your tote is done, so you just
think of that person that you're shopping for and narrow
down the four things. And it may because it's super simple,
because I get it, it is overwhelming to narrow down four.
And then also if you're doing it today, it's super

(20:06):
last minute. So we were trying, you know, trying to
throw things out there that make it easier on you
and and helpful. So a gift that gives back that's
definitely near and dear to my heart. And again, I
know it's a biased thing, but it really does make
a great gift. I saw someone the other day carrying one,
and I said hi, because most of the time they

(20:27):
know who we are because they only bought it because
they know us or listen to the show or whatever,
and she had no idea who I was. I was like,
I love your bag and she was like thank you,
and I was like, I make those, yeah, Because then
it was awkward because she was like it was a
gift like I and I was like, oh, I only

(20:47):
said something because that's that's my company that I have
with my friend Mary, and we started making those to
support Haiti, and now yeah, there's I asked Mary the
other day how many totes she thinks are out there,
and she thinks around a hundred thousand, and so yeah,
this woman she got it as a gift, and so
she did not know who I was. But anyway, she
loves the toe and she was carrying it and she
thought it was a great gift. And I was like,

(21:09):
I can't remember her four things, but one of them
was angiogram as one of the things. Um I gave
my mom one of those last year I think last
year for her birthday at Christmas. She loves it. Oh good, awesome,
Thanks for the endorsement. All right. I hope y'all have
an awesome day and I will see you on Thursday
for four things. Bye bye
