(00:00):
And let's bring in mister golf,Ray Hustik and Ray. Good afternoon.
How are you, sir? Iam enjoying every second of this tournament the
Masters. All that rain about alittle over half an inch last night soften
things up this morning. The windis howling this afternoon. Pars are great

(00:20):
scores and we're off to a reallyexciting start. Bryson d Chambeau seven under
parr playing the eighteenth hole with athree shot lead over Danny will at the
twenty sixteen Masters Champion, who's inthe clubhouse with sixty eight. This is
really good scores today. Tiger Wood'sjust birdied on one. By the way,

(00:41):
Literally as we were coming on theair, I looked up to see
him barry a birdie putt. Sohe is one under through one, and
clearly it was a delayed start,and I wasn't even realized. I even
said to Josh what we're going on. I'm like, what's Tiger doing?
I thought he went off at one. He's like, dude, there was
a delay. It was a delay. So and then Josh is so happy.

(01:03):
Bryceon d Chambeau is doing as wellas he's. No, I'm not
field. I did not if there'sone guy in the entire field, I
don't want to see runaway with this. It is that guy. He rubs
me the wrong way. So didhe just I think he just he's on
it too, isn't he? Oneighteen? I know you just hid out

(01:25):
of the bunker. I was watching. So, uh, Bryson that is.
And so he's about to wrap up. I think worst case he if
he even have he three putts,he finishes at six under, and uh,
that's an incredibly solid opening at theMasters, is it not? It
is? And you know, wegot to give a little credit. I
mean, he's already three times thisyear and he's only played four tournaments so

(01:49):
far. In on the Lift DealLas Vegas, he was ninth. He
went to Hong Kong, No SaudiArabi he was fourth, Hong Kong,
you was sixth, and last weekin Miami he was seven. So he's
playing well against against those or thatcompetition. Let's see how he does this
week. Obviously a phenomenal start today, I mean just went out and birdied

(02:09):
one, and other than a threeputt at nine, he's had a great
day. Lots of birdies. Therewere a lot of birdies early again,
the course was soft, not asmuch wind. It was a little softer
than they had practiced in. Ithink we're almost back to the speed and
firmness of the golf course from practicerounds Monday and Tuesday. And if this

(02:30):
keeps up and there's not a lotmore rain really or any rain between now
and Sunday, man, is itgonna be scary over the weekend? Are
these green slow? Because I justlooked up while we're talking and this Ryan
Fox from from New Zealand who's beenon tour since twenty eleven, because he
at one point through nine, hewas like five under. I go,

(02:51):
who is this guy? I didn'teven I don't even know. Josh and
I both were sitting there before we'regoing on, and I'm like, I
don't even know who this cat is. I started going down the people who
were in the lead. I didn'teven recognize half the names at the top
of the leader board. But hejust putted I think what was at twelve?
I think I just saw it.Maybe I don't, I don't know,
something like that, but he I'msorry, No, it was eight

(03:14):
that he was on and he justhit a putt and it was like It
literally was like a foot short whenhe hit it. I was like,
are the Greens really that slow?We know at Augusta though, they have
an amazing system underneath. That's likeit just dries everything up, right,
I mean they as they spare noexpense for something like that. So right,
yeah, you're right. Fox isleading. Actually he was five hundredth

(03:36):
to turn. He's given a coupleback New Zealander by birth, but he
plays the European Tour. He wasvoted like the Sevy Man of the Year
or something a couple of years ago. He's really well liked. He's a
great player. He's got some winson the European Tour, and he's made
the cut I think like in thelast three straight Majors or something. So
it's not like this is an untestedguy. He doesn't have a big resume

(04:00):
and we've not seen him a lot, but he's he's playing some really good
golf and I'm sure he's disappointed withthe way his back night has gone so
far. But you know, alot of the big names. I'm Victor
Hutland, the you know, reigningMemorial champions. Sitting at four under through
the front nine, Scotty Scheffler,Josh's pick yesterday, A couple under through
ten, filled at one under, along with Tiger Tony Fenw's at one under,

(04:25):
Will's Alatorus, John Rahm all atone under. Buck Guy golfer Shipley
the amateur, if you've seen him, he's he's under par through seven.
So we've had, you know,a pretty good start. Lots of lots
of red ones up there, butalso some some big numbers. Pretty disappointing.
Fred Couple's having a tough time withhis back. A couple over we

(04:48):
look at actually now three over par. Camilla Vivegas can't keep it on the
golf course. He was at fourover at one point. Olsapple shot five
over. So really a pretty interestingfirst day. Not a lot of surprises
out there other than d Chambeau. And maybe we're only surprised because we just
don't see him on the PGA tour. We all know the skill and the

(05:11):
strength in his game, right misterdolphray Hustik joining us now it's round one
of the masters, a tradition unlikeany other. And hello friends, you
know we're used to hearing all theand the music and all of those things.
It was so cool. One yearout at Mirfield, Congressman Troy Balderson,

(05:32):
who's a friend of the show,he goes, hey, I'm gonna
bring a friend over. When wewere out there live D was with us.
Then that year Demetrius was with us. D. Yeah, you're talking
about the thing when we got totoe Yeah, so yeah, he brought
jim Nantz over and he came onthe air with us Ray And let me
tell you, that guy is he'she's great, and you understand, uh,

(05:57):
you get his allure, you gethis that intangible thing when he's there
with you. But you want totalk about a guy who was just a
lot of fun to have there anda guy who just rolled with it.
I don't know if you even knewabout that or I ever told you about
that, but it was really funto have him there and hang in with
us and so on. But justkind of a side note there, because

(06:18):
I always look forward to their callon the way CBS handles the whole thing
on the weekends or what have you. But to watch this right now,
I don't know, are you gonnaare you gonna move anything around with regard
to some of your predictions from yesterday, or is it too early still yet
for you to even you know, even think about anything like that. Yeah,

(06:40):
it's way too early. I meanI mentioned Jordan Steve, he hasn't
e keed off yet, right,Morikawa has not teed off. Thomas Kim,
Brooks Kopka. Those guys are stillwaiting to go, chomping at the
bit. I see Dustin Johnson andTommy Fleet would all wait today as well
that they haven't even begun yet.So it's really gonna be wild to see

(07:00):
with all this wind and the golfcourse firming up, how the scores changed
this afternoon compared to this morning, and even the balls we've seen a couple
of them on the higher greens wherethey're starting to oscillate just a little bit
with the wind. So will thatwill that slow things down? Or will
it, uh, you know, will will it make guys a lot more

(07:24):
a lot less aggressive? Let's sayI think it. I think it is
really gonna be interesting. And thenand then what happens tomorrow? Right,
if the golf course is really fast, and if any of that wind comes
in behind the storms. But youknow, it's a great tournament. It's
always fun to see it when theweather does get a little kooky. Uh.
The par fives on the back nineboth head to the west, so

(07:45):
if there's a strong west wind,it's tough for guys to get home into
And that makes a difference, youknow, for the bigger hitters like Deshambeau
and and uh you know Rom andFew and Rory and uh, you know,
the guy that hit it a longway, if they can get just
barely get to those backbane part fivesand two, that makes a big difference,
right, Ray, I think thisis going to be a bitter sweet

(08:09):
Masters Sunday because this will be thelast time we hear the soothing, dulcintones
of one Vern Lunquist, who issynonymous with this golf tournament. I mean
all the way back to when Iwas a kid in eighty six. Yes,
sir, you know that the iconiccalls he called the you know,
the tiger chip in the two thousandand five Vern Lungquist is a master at

(08:33):
his craft, and it's really goingto be not the same after this year,
moving forward without his voice coming fromthe sixteenth hole. Yeah, forty
years of broadcasting the Masters, andthink about I mean, as a sportscaster,
what he's done basketball. He's hadso many iconic moments football, you

(08:54):
know, and to hear that voicelike you say, go away, but
you're not enough to remember Frank theround mound of sounds to cover those last
holes at Augusta. And you knowPat summer All when he did it with
Kenvin Turry and Tom Wiskoff as acolor announcer. I mean the stories and
even Gary McCord who was thrown offfor saying that the greens were so fast

(09:16):
it was like they had been bikiniwax. He was removed from the CBS
and the CBS broadcasting team, andyou know so many great stories about the
broadcasters. They're as much a partof the story and the history and the
laura of this tournament as anything else. Bryson D. Chambeau is the leader

(09:37):
right now at seven under. Hehas a par putt. It looks like
he he you know, I don'tknow, he's getting ready to put that
in and it's pretty close. Ithink he's going to finish leader in the
clubhouse today, well for now atseven under. And I don't know you
get something like that, a guylike him, if what would be your
suggestion to him if you were onhis bag, right, I mean,

(09:58):
would you do you tell him, like, hey, keep the pedal down
on Friday, or do you say, look, just don't shoot yourself out
of it, go out and beconservative. And I mean, I don't
know what would be the game plan. You think a guy like that,
who we all kind of know thatat one point it was like some of
the stuff he did, people wouldscratch their head and go, say,
what what are you doing as faras your clubs or you know, what

(10:22):
have you? And it's just hardto probably I would imagine keep a rein
that guy in if you're on hisbag, you know, yeah, if
I'm cattying for Bryce and I'm gonnaspend Friday and Saturday pushing and pushing and
pushing, that's his personality. Stayaggressive, you know, keep the pedal
to the metal, as you said, you know, hit driver on those
holes, maybe even try to knockit on the green on three, you

(10:45):
know, with a driver. Ithink his personality, he loves that,
he loves being aggressive. And heyou know, if he fired sixty seven
or sixty eight tomorrow on top ofthis, I don't know anybody's gonna get
any work close to him, withthe wind blowing the way to afternoon.
He may have a three shot leadafter round one. If you get shoot
in the high sixties tomorrow, youknow, he could blow this thing wide
open. Then on Sunday, ifhe's got a decent lead, he's got

(11:09):
to start saying, all right, let's take out double bogies, so we
make sure there's no place we canhit it where we make a double,
which might mean we might not hitdriver on a couple of these holes.
But for the next two days,I think you just keep going and stay
aggressive, because that is his personalityand I don't want to take him out
of that, especially when he's hadsuch a great first round. I love,

(11:31):
and I'm stating the obvious here, but I love the fact that Amen
Corner brings so much drama, especiallywhen we're talking about on Sunday for the
people who are in it that areyou know, around the lead or somebody
who could surge and take the leadand even win it, so on and
so forth. I love. Thisis like my favorite favorite tournament every year

(11:54):
bar none, hands down, anda close second would be of course the
Old Course. For me, Ijust I love everything that is all about
that and the fact that you wouldbe able to and you may have you
played the old course. Actually we'retalking about you know over in Scotland.
I have you have. So that'swhat I love about that course. You
can like you you can get onthere. Clearly we're never, at least

(12:16):
I'm not probably ever going to bein a situation where I get to play
Augusta National simply because it's just sotough. You know. Gosh, there
are people we hear stories about millionairesbeing declined as far as multimillionaires, like,
yeah, nope, you got tobe invited. It's a very very
specific, you know, kind ofperson that is allowed in there and play

(12:37):
that and all of that. Butthat's those are the two like at the
top for me. But man, that it's just such a special place.
And we've watched so much drama overthe years. It's so much fun to
watch. Well, you're right, the drama is is the back nine part
five, because you can make threeor seven. I mean they were from
Eagle to Double Boogie. I justwatched Hideki Massie. I'm on thirteen.
Try to lay up and hit itin the water there and so the things

(12:58):
that can happen to you mentally.I mean remembering Curtis Strange, you know,
walking away and knocking it in thewater on the back nine par fives
and losing the Masters, and andother guys who you know couldn't get home
chip back famously laying up and sayinghe could win with the wedge and obviously
didn't. But there's there's so many, as you say, the drama.

(13:18):
Those two par fives are what makethe golf tournament. And if I make
three and you make six and we'retight coming down to Sunday, on that
thirteenth hole, it makes a hugedifference in both the attitude the confidence,
and you know, you can't startlosing confidence on the back nine Sunday on
this tournament. So it's something thatwe watch every year, expecting the great

(13:41):
players to have a chance for eagleon both US par fives, and more
often than not, they're either havingto lay up or somebody's making a soup
and mistake and we all sit andwatch on TV. No, no,
don't hit it, don't hit itthere, don't go or whatever, Yeah,
and they do. Anyway, it'slike the horror movie where he's,
you know, tell them the guyto get out of there right exactly,

(14:01):
mister golf Ray Hustik, Man,this is uh, you know, a
golf tournament like any other, andI'm I'm ecstatic that we get to get
to watch it and have you giveus your thoughts and so on on it.
So, mister golf Ray Hustik, thank you very much for joining us.
We appreciate it, and we'll allbe watching of course, every shot

(14:22):
as we go through the weekend herefor the Masters. Thank you, brother,
appreciate you.
