(00:00):
And Josh, I don't know ifI look any different today, but I
am a dad who is a prouddad of a graduate of high school.
Finally, Josephine, she did it, man, she graduated. I can't
believe it. She did it overthe weekend. She finally graduated. As
a matter of fact, Yeah,it was yesterday. And to say that
(00:20):
I'm proud is an unbelievable understatement. And just to watch this whole thing,
this is my first can you tell? Yes? All right, fine,
but it's a proud dad moment andI am beside myself, so is her
mom. And what a fantastic day. It was yesterday, wrapping up the
weekend. But it was I heldit together and at one point thought I
(00:46):
was gonna I was like, okay, I'm not crying your cry, and
it was. I held it togethersomehow, some way. But I got
to tell you, I didn't thinkI was going to. But it was
pretty exciting to say the least. So there it is. Finally, that's
one of the one of the milestones, one of the finish lines that you
you know, try for, orthat you envision or you fantasize about if
(01:10):
you're a parent, getting them acrossthat quite frankly, and uh, all
right with that, let's bring inthe FLP President. I'm here in uh
for Lodge nine. Brian Steele joiningus. Hey Brian, how are you
man? Hey Blazer, how areyou? Thanks for having me today.
Yeah, thanks very much for joiningus. So let's start with I know
(01:33):
you're a golfer, so a coupleof different things on the from the golf
side of our lives at this point. First of all, wire to wire
winner for the PGA. I mean, I don't know if you know,
I've always messed around since I've beenplaying golf. I mess around and I'm
like this putt to win the Masters, you know, kind of a thing.
(01:53):
And yesterday we watched Xander Schoffley makethe putt for Birdie to win it
and then post the first ever Majorwith that low of a score. So
a couple of different things were onthe line, but wired to wire winner,
so that was actually pretty cool. And that was not only the big
news from you know, Valhalla andthe Louisville, Kentucky area, but as
(02:16):
we know, on Friday, ScottyScheffler was arrested and I'm telling you that
popped up on my feed Friday, and I was like, what the what
is going on? And then youstart looking into this whole thing. So
what were your thoughts when you sawthat Scheffler got arrested. Oh the first
thing I did, I said,oh, here we go, and I
read it and then it comes downto comply with the officer's commands and none
(02:38):
of this happened. And listen,if the winner wants to donate to the
FOP Foundation, two, we're morethan happy to take some of his money
for that coup, right. Ijust didn't know if you did, were
you able to actually kind of breakdown what types of you know, the
nuances and so on with that situation, because it seems like it's a very
(03:00):
stark division online when you start readingpeople's comments about that whole situation, And
you know what, that was oneof the things we've always talked about that
Brian, where it's like we'll readthese stories where you know, these bone
heads get pulled over and you know, they start resisting or they don't comply,
or they don't listen to instructions andso on, and unfortunately, a
(03:21):
lot of times the reason we're talkingabout is because these people end up dead.
Because they're shot, they try torun, they try to do something
that appears to be life threatening toofficers, and so on. In this
particular situation, he's claiming he grabbedonto the vehicle and was drugged for a
little bit or what have you,And I just don't they're also talking about
the charges might be dropped at thispoint too. Yeah, so you know,
(03:45):
I read it too, and Iread the online warriors. At the
end of the day, I alwayssay, until the facts that the case
come out, the investigations complete, and the evidence is in core, I
generally reserve judgment. But I say, if you're driving a car and there's
an officer on the hood of yourcar or being dragged, it's probably a
good time to stop what you're doing. Yeah, I guess there's no question
about that, no question if youwere in that situation, because I don't
(04:08):
know that that officer even knew whohe was during that like, and I
don't know that it's tough to see. It was supposedly dark, it was
raining, it was in the morning, it was early. The road the
only one way in and on.There's just you're right, there's a lot
of I guess moving parts here andyou got to get like full facts from
top to bottom. I suppose surethe officer may not know who he was.
(04:30):
Maybe Scotty just you know, thoughthe was holier now and didn't have
to listen. Or maybe the officermade a complete mistake. Right, we
just waited the facts that the casecome out, and then we'll determine.
As always, if the officer doessomething he's wrong, then let's hold him
accountable. If Scott does something wrong, then we're going to hold him accountable.
Yeah, yeah, for sure.So did you get out? Did
you get to play any of thisweek? And I got to ask you
(04:50):
that before we get serious here.Oh I did last Friday? I did,
And like I said, I golf, but I'm certainly not a golfer.
But I've never had a bad dayof golf. So I enjoy it
with some good friends and I can'twait to get back out next weekend.
How many balls did you lose?I don't know, you know what what
you internal affairs? I don't wantto I don't want to answer that without
a ret That's fantastic. I loveit. Okay, the answer is a
(05:15):
lot. I suppose at that pointwith that answer, I guess you can
kind of assume that that might bethe situation. Look, I'm right with
you, man, so so beit. Uh, And I buy I
don't buy the really cheap ones becauseevery once in a while, if I
catch it in the center of theclub, I do like it to do
what it's supposed to do. SoI'll spend a little bit of money on
the on the golf bomb. Boy, it hurts extra when that thing gets
lost. Man, Oh, nodoubt about that. I'm a straight Kirklan
(05:39):
Man. Oh good, Okay, cutting is saving a little cash. I
like it, man, good stuff. So yeah, Wow, over the
weekend, that was probably kind ofa dumb you were probably gosh, you
were probably fielding all kinds of calls. Kind of a dumb question to see
if you did much golfing over theweekend. But with these five shootings and
(05:59):
the five people killed and so onand so forth, what do you know
about, like, what can youtalk about so far that has been founded?
I mean, everybody is not incustody, the purps aren't in custody
and so on as of yet.Correct. Yeah, that's correct, to
my knowledge. They don't have everybodyyet. I'll tell you this bodies everywhere.
That's what I was told when Icalled one of the first responders on
(06:19):
scene and I said, what wasit like? He said, bodies everywhere.
And this is an individual who servedin Iraq. And we're not talking
about Iraq. We're talking about fifthin the Summit area, which is literally
the university district. I know themedia likes to call it Wyland Park.
Wyland Park is in the university district. Why are not we re reporting that
as a university district. Well, that's simple. It looks bad in the
(06:42):
paper and it upsets civilians of practice. So that is also right next to
the Short North where there was anothershooting. These are areas that typically you
do not think about of high crime. But like I've always said, crime
spreads like a cancer. Yeah, unfortunately we are witnessing that in real time.
Yeah. I don't even I'm guessingthere are a lot of things that
(07:05):
have to do with these shootings.I mean, I can, you know,
look over the stories and the differentthe way these uh have played out,
the way that they're being reported andso on. But really I don't
know, I mean, what what'syour overall thought with regard to you know,
policing is it is. Does itfeel like to you that it's getting
(07:29):
it's getting better or you know,we know how much scrutiny police officers are
under. And fortunately there were noofficers involved, if you will, in
any of these shootings, at leastit's not being reported. Is that correct?
That is correct? Please? AndI'll tell you we are doing our
jobs. We are continuing to puthandcuffs on people that commit violent crimes.
(07:49):
We're removing them from the streets andhere in all these in all these situations,
it's really the same. We haveindividuals that are repeatedly arrested for legal
weapons offense, is violent crime offenseson to be let back out in the
street by the court system, visa the low bail or an ankle monitor.
It's this recidiism. It just keepsrepeating. This isn't the first time
(08:11):
one person or a group decided togun down six people at an interception.
Right. We know there's violent criminalsand we have to continue to put them
in jail. The court system hasto do their part to ensure that they
remain incarcerated. There is no rehabilitatinga group who guns down six people on
our street. So when these situationsthat happened over the weekend. Is that
(08:33):
really kind of what you were summingup? They're surmising there that these are
repeat offenders that you believe are thepurpse here. There is no doubt in
my mind. Again, I amnot officially involved investigation, but with speaking
with some investigators and the officers onthe scene, they know who these individuals
are, they know what they're about. These are some of the most violent
(08:54):
of the violent. We have tocontinue to go after them, vigorously,
prosecute them and simply lock them.So is a gang related then? Is
that? Or is that like anoutdated thing or is that a real thing?
To call it that or speculate orare we speculating? Uh? Well,
right right now, there I haveno indication I could say right now,
And we try not to talk aboutthe gang violence, but we try
(09:15):
not to name them. We don'twant to give notoriety to one other gang
over the other. I could tellyou what these are not churchgoers out at
three in the morning, that much, I could tell you right right.
So these all seem like were they'requote unquote innocent people you know involved in
this? Or what is it?You know what I'm trying to ask.
I mean, I don't know howto say it without sounding I guess,
(09:37):
you know kind of But is itinnocent people that were gunned down? Or
is it returning fire and everybody's carryingguns and they kind of knew what they're
getting into kind of a situation.I could tell you any victim of the
crime. I always I am notcallous to not think about them. I'll
pray for them, I'll pray fortheir family. And I'm not saying this
happened in this instance, but sometimesthe person killed at three am is a
(10:01):
loser out of gun battle. Welive in this world where you think it's
good versus bad. Sometimes it's badversus bad. And again I'm not speaking
to any one particular incident. Justin my two decades as a police officer,
that's often been the case. Now, there's certainly times that innocent victims
get gunned down for no other reason, but in my experience, around that
time of day and in that typeof environment, sometimes it's kind of it's
(10:24):
a mutual thing and just one personhappened to lose. We're talking with FOP
President Brian Steele. Brian switching gearshere as far as recruiting goes for CPD,
what is that like now? Iread that there's been some trouble with
this. What are your thoughts onthat or what are you hearing? So
we are having a difficult time, and I openly talk about this. I
(10:45):
think Chief Brian and the Division ofPolice, I think they are doing an
outstanding job at trying to recruit.I'll give the mayors off in the city
credit. They are funding this outfit, they are trying to recruit. But
we still have scar tissue from twentytwenty. Some individuals in a city vilified
the police. I had said intwenty or in twenty twenty, it'll take
ten years to overcome this. Howdo you get your young men and women,
(11:09):
your best and brightest, to goin a profession that was so deeply
vilified and just blamed for society's failuresin twenty twenty. It's going to take
time. I will tell you.I do think this is an outstanding division
of Police. This is an outstandingcareer. I welcome any young man or
woman to come out and join yourpolice forces. We'd love to have you.
But we are having a difficult timeright now recruiting FLP president Brian Steele,
(11:33):
thanks very much for jumping on withus today. Man, appreciate you
all right,
