(00:00):
Augie, how are you brother?Free, Free Scotty Seffler. Free,
Free Scottie Seffler. From the gateto the t Scottie Seffler will be free.
Perfect, man, I thought you'vebeen working on that a while.
That's perfect. He nailed it,Thank you very much. Yes, you
know, in spirit with all thecollege kids who were too damn lazy to
(00:20):
take a final and had to go, you know, build a build a
where did they even make? Whatdid they call it an encampment? Wasn't
that what they called it? Anencampment? Yeah? Well, I think
Scotti Scheffler should have his own groupof encamps or whatever. I think it's
interesting when when we started getting ready, it was like charges, Look,
you know, most likely to bedropping the boom. Charges are dropped.
(00:42):
Yeah, and then you look atwhat they're saying about a local prosecutor asking
a judge to drop the four chargesagainst Shuffler, who was not required to
be in court. This was earliertoday, and then they reviewed the case.
Listen to this in a thorough andexpeditious manner. I bet they expedited
it is that video came out ofthe cop line his ass off. Yeah,
(01:03):
there's some receipts where Scheffler's like,hey, wait a minute, there's
no guy chasing me or me draggingany police officer anyway, They said the
account of the incident's a big misunderstandingand was corroborated by the evidence. So
there it is that the officer hasbeen disciplined for not activating his body worn
camera, and also on that failure, he wrote that Scheffler demanded to be
(01:26):
let in the golf course. Sowhy are they even putting anything else that
this officer said, because clearly hewas embellishing. He was embellishing. Yeah,
and I don't know if I don'tknow if you saw, but there's
a new footage that came out ofScotty Scheffler in the back of another CoP's
car and he's telling the cop,you know, and he's shaken. You
(01:49):
can visibly see Scotty Scheffler shaken andhe's telling the other cop like, he
hit me with his flashlight. SoI guess that motion, like when the
cop runs up to the sign.We thought he'd banged on the window.
The window. Scotty said his windowwas down and then that guy just hit
him in the shoulder with his flashlight. He hit him with a mag light
like his or a small I don'tknow. Scotty Scheffler just told the officer
(02:12):
that whose car he was in?The other officer. Yeah, yeah,
that he got that that gill Ushit him in the shoulder with the flashlight.
I hope that didn't injure him.Clearly he needs his shoulders. I
mean, you know he kind ofuses those on the daily basis, you
know he doesn't. Yeah, it'scrazy, that's crazy. Let's bring in
radio voice of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Bob mcgella. Get joining us.
(02:36):
Bob, Welcome again to the MarkBlazer Show. How's it going, brother,
Well that's pretty boring, not muchgoing on, you know. Yeah?
Yeah, how about were you reallyhappy? I know you sent me
about four text going Scotty Scheffler,He's it's getting dismissed. You were really
excited about that? Yeah, Iwas really very very I mean great video
(02:57):
that they had to go off of, and yeah, can you believe that
they couldn't find a better video untillike two weeks later? Yeah. Just
kind of odd, isn't it.Yeah. Yeah, kind of seems like
it's that way all over the placein the judicial system these days. But
anyway, yes, you would bespot on, that is correct. I
gotta tell you guys about first ofall, the last time I saw Bob,
(03:22):
well, the time before last, because I saw you in the radio
station last week. But then thetime before that was in Las Vegas and
we were at a place called theChandelier Bar, which is inside the Cosmopolitan,
which is where I'm staying right now. And so excuse me, So
Bob, I was there last night, hanging out at the Chandelier Bar.
(03:42):
I was thinking about all the funwe were having, all of us hanging
around and so on and so forth. I was lost. I was just
looking for directions and I haven't bestanding next to it. I don't know
what you're talking about. So youmust have accidentally ordered the one round that
you've got for Okay, that's fine, that's good. Den I deny,
deny. I like where you're goingwith that. Sure, sure we had
So upstairs is a place called superFreco. Have you ever heard of that
(04:05):
place there? It's an Italian joint. Uh No, I have not.
Okay, and place upstairs? Thatplace is popular. No, that's like
the hidden one that's not even ontheir menu. Like you on the like
on the if you go on thewebsite for the the you know the the
property that that pizza place you're talkingabout isn't even listed on there. It's
(04:26):
like a secret kind of pizza place. Right o'clock, Yeah, exactly.
So we went to this place,Super Frico. It's an Italian joint,
and about every fifteen minutes they dothese random performances. It's it's almost like
it's it's like a circus type. One guy had these glow in the dark
like plastic rings. He was hewas juggling him, and then a roaring
(04:49):
twenties gal came out and was dancingaround and act staggering around like she was
drunk and doing almost like slapstick typestuff. It was. It was really
cool and uh packed, I meanabsolutely packed. And then you know,
we had all this different stuff broughtto us relatively simple menu for the type
of place. But the real funwas there's a speakeasy in this place and
(05:13):
it's called the Ski Lodge. Sowe ended up there after and it's just
this kind of secret hidden part ofsuper Freako. And then you go into
the ski Lodge and you know there'sthe behind the bar looks like there's a
huge scene. It looks live likesnow and stuff, so it looks like
you're literally sitting in a ski lot. It's just one of the really cool
things about Las Vegas. They gotall these cool little little different things that
(05:35):
you can do and so on.Did you happen to do any of that
stuff when you were there? No? No, it's a work trip laser
when I go there, you knowthat, Yeah, working on cores lights.
And so I've just made notes ofeverything you told. Yeah, the
draft, cores light draft exactly. That's perfect. Yeah, at least you're
admitting it. That's yeah, that'sgood. I mean, you're admitting it
(05:58):
for sure. So all right, doctor Jack. In fact, I'm gonna
I'm gonna pick your brain because I'mtaking my wife with me to the draft
this year. I'm speaking of atthe East Coast Hockey League meetings right before
the NHL Draft, and then's stayingto work the draft. So I need
scouting reports from you. Yeah, well, okay, which makes me nervous,
but I need to do that.I'm all in on that. You
can rely on me when it comesto Las Vegas information. That's one thing.
(06:21):
One area I'm really good at andthere's no question. When is that?
By the way, what month June. I'm gonna okay out there from
the twenty second to the thirtieth.Okay, it's gonna be really hot for
starters, So keep that in mind. Okay, So we'll start with that
and I'll get the rest for youlater. So the Jackets hiring Don Waddell,
who just stepped down as the CanesGM. He's gonna be GM for
(06:44):
CBJ and president of hockey Operations.I tend to think I start kind of
digging into this guy's pedigree. Boband the radio voice for the Columbus Bluejackets,
Bob mcgelligan is who's joining us now, And so I start digging down
on this guy's pedigree. Is ispretty strong. He's a guy that looks
like, I don't know, hecould be another big piece of the puzzle
(07:05):
here in Columbus. Well, he'sgot a lot of experience on both the
business side and the hockey side ofoperations. You know a guy that played
you know, he played minor leaguehockey. He had one game in the
NHL because of injury, didn't getmore than that. But he's spent a
lot of time with the USA Hockeyprogram. He was the general manager for
(07:27):
the Atlanta Thrashers. He was ascout for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was
the president and general manager most recently, as you said, at the Carolina
Hurricanes. So he brings a wealthof experience into this job. And oh,
by the way, the Hurricanes havebeen pretty good in the last number
of years he's been the GM therethe last six They're constantly in the playoffs
and pushing for you know, atrip deep into the playoffs to the Stanley
(07:49):
Cup Final. They haven't gotten tothat point that they've been to conference championship
games. And you know, he'sgot he had that team right where they
needed to be so that they canbe in the discussion every single year.
And as he said today during hispress conference and one on one talk I
had with him, he feels andlooking at you know, what he has
(08:09):
in this organization, the players thathe has. I'm not saying they're all
going to make the NHL, theseyoung guys, but you know, you
can use them as chips to tradeand get other things that you need.
But he feels like he has thetools to be able to do the same
type of thing here in Columbus.Hey, when you look at his assistant
GM when he was with the RedWings in ninety eight and the Stanley Cup,
(08:31):
was it So was the league sodifferent then or is he so far
removed from that success? I mean, certainly, you never really. I
think there's always a way to win. Certain formula's work, and I think
they kind of transcend time even butit has the game changed enough to where
(08:52):
any of his really strong ideas orthe stuff that he's bringing with him,
is it Do you feel like ittranslates with the Jackets or and at the
current time the way I mean, think about when you started watching hockey and
how different it is now the waythe players play it and so on.
Yeah, well now it's just lesscontact and it's more skill and speed than
it was. I mean, thebiggest difference from when he won that Cup
(09:13):
with Detroit and now is there's asalary cap in place that you have to
adhere to. But in the game, like I said, the style has
changed. But you know, ifif he hadn't been in the league since
then or for a long time,or if there was a big gap of
time that he wasn't in the leaguewould be one thing, but you know,
he's been there, and as Isaid, he's coming from a team
(09:35):
that he just turned into a prettygood juggernaut in the Eastern Conference here.
So yeah, I think it's goingto translate really well. To be honest
with you, and his personality,I mean, he's a guy, he's
from Detroit. He just fits rightinto this culture here in Columbus. He's
a very friendly person, a personableguy, you know, so he'll be
(09:58):
able to to fit in with thefans and then doing the dirty work he's
going to have to do when itcomes to this roster. There's no doubt
because there are things he's going tohave to do that he's not going to
like doing. Some players aren't goingto like what he's doing, some fans
aren't going to like what he's doing. But there are things that are going
to have to be done, andhe's going to be up to all those
challenges. Radio Voice of the ColumbusBlue Jackets, Bob mcgelli, get joining
(10:22):
us now, and yeah, it'sDon Waddell, GM, President of Hockey
Operations for the Columbus Blue Jackets. You know, did they have their crosshairs
on him for a while or clearlyyou know, you can't really, I
guess in quotes, get serious ifyou will, while he's with another organization.
(10:43):
But the fact that he's stepping downas the GM for the Hurricanes,
was that something that was a notebrainer when it happened in your estimation for
the CBJ Brass, Yeah, itwas a strange situation in Carolina because even
though he was GM, he hadpermission to talk to the team. And
this happened a couple of years agowith him too, when Minnesota had a
job open, he interviewed for thatjob. Eventually, Minnesota hired Bill Garon
(11:07):
away from the Pittsburgh Penguins and didn'ttake Don at that point in time,
but he was allowed to interview then. So and it's not, you know,
the the owner in Carolina, it'sa you know, it's a younger
guy, a new wave guy,and you know, they he just does
things differently. It wasn't that hedidn't like Don Woodell. It wasn't that
he wanted him to leave, buthe's the kind of guy that I think
(11:28):
I think they both kind of gotto the point where they felt like,
you know what, maybe it's justtime for a change. So I don't
know that he was always on theBlue Jackets radar. I don't know if
they knew that he was going tobecome available, But as he said in
his press conference today, he's knownMike Priest, who is the Blue Jackets
president, for a long time.So I'm sure once it got to a
point where he thought that he mightbe looking for something else, then those
(11:50):
conversations began and then they worked out. Because you still you can't be buddies
with somebody, but you still don'tknow if it's going to work out and
if it's going to be a goodfit for you. But once they started
talking, they both figured out thatthis would work quite fine, fantastic,
and we all know how this works. You can have the best management,
the best brass, the best Idon't know however you want to label it
(12:11):
in place, but the players stillgot to put it in the net.
They still got to you know,do their thing, and they still,
you know, have to bring allof those different things. You got to
dodge somewhat the injuries, because that'sunfortunate that it happens to every team in
the National Hockey League. So thoseare all clearly important pieces with you know,
the the hire of Don for theGM and President of Hockey Operations,
we know that's a step in theright direction, but yeah, the players,
(12:35):
they ultimately have to be the onesthat play the game. So yeah,
you can get the best pieces inplace, but it doesn't you know,
hopefully it translates, is what I'mtrying to say. I guess yeah.
And you know, it's first timein the soon to be twenty five
year history of this organization that there'sa general manager that has been a general
manager in the NHL before they camehere. The three previous ones didn't have
(12:56):
GM that be the main guy inthe assistant GM or something like that.
So this guy's done it, andhe's done it with two different franchises,
and he's done it for a longtime. So yeah, I think it'll
work out. He's not going tocome in here and start RiPP or and
firing people right away and hiring newpeople. He's the kind of guy's going
to come in and figure it out. He's going to have conversations with the
(13:18):
coaches, with the other people onhis staff, and he's going to figure
out, you know, who's who, what's what, he's just not going
to come in like a bull inthe china shop. He's going to figure
it out. He's going to bethorough. But at the end of the
day, I think it's going tobe really good for this organization. Last
you were in Las Vegas, thenext stop for the Columbus Blue Jackets was
Phoenix. I know you were headedthere after here. We had talked about
(13:39):
did you end up teeing it upwhen you were there and was that the
last time you played? Yes,yes, and yes. Actually, to
be honest with him, in fact, I played so well with the rental
clubs that we had there because theywere these tallaway clubs. I just talked
to somebody today about trying to getthe three with because I can't. The
(14:00):
three would save my life for thelast couple of years. And I swung
that one two times on that courseand hit it chrisp both times. So
I'm trying to I know somebody thathas a callaway in that I'm trying to
get a deal. You know. You know, well, typically the saying
goes, you got to have theswing before the thing, but clearly you
had the thing there and the swing, so that's hurt. So we were
(14:22):
playing and I was riding with DaveMetsold from Bally Sports in the cart and
I said to him, I go, I go. All of my fears
are coming true right now. Andhe said what is that? And I
said, well, people always tellme that if I would play a little
bit more often, if I hada little bit better clubs, I could
be pretty good at this. AndI said that these clubs are, you
know, pretty much better than whatI have. So it was all coming
(14:45):
all coming to fruition that day.So it's going to cost me money,
I called that day. Now,it's going to cost me money. Yes,
and there is something to technology,Bob. Yes, the better clubs,
well, if you hit it inthis enter, they have no choice
but to maybe hit it a littlebit farther. So that's good. There
you go. Did you get thankyou, by the way, Yeah?
(15:07):
I did. Thank you for sayingI look like Trump? I love it.
Yeah, even though it's a mugshot, I don't care. You sent
me a selfie and I swear itlooks like Trump smugshot. I'm not.
I've been working on going for that. Yeah, I've been. I've been
working on it. We'll tee itup we're tearing it up this year.
Just get ready. I'm gonna keepbugging you, Bob, so I can
(15:28):
actually have a chance. Okay,he's the radio voice of the come up
his Blue Jackets. Bob, Thankyou so much, brother, Talk soon,
all right, Thanks Martin.
