Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, here we go. He's part of our best
Buckeye coverage. And yes he was at the game. He
was at the Cotton Bowl. Let's bring in Roy Hall
joining us. Now, Roy, welcome again to the show. How
are you, brother?
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I was doing well until you started telling my personal
business to where I was over the weekend.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
I guess I shouldn't have said anything. I have kept
it more quiet. Oh wait, there was that picture you
posted on socials. They kind of gave it away.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Hey listen, but that has nothing to do with the
people listening to the radio. They're driving in their cars
right now. You're just telling people where I was. And
what if I wanted to keep that private just for
the social media.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Man, Well, then I guess I spoiled it. Uh Friday night,
Let's go to the game, twenty eight to fourteen. By
the way, real quick Buck guys have covered in all
the playoff games so far, seven and a half was
the favorite versus Tennessee forty two, seventeen Final two and
a half, versus Oregon forty one, twenty one Final five
and a half, versus Texas twenty eight to fourteen in
(00:57):
the Cotton Bowl, and now the Buckeye started off as
a nine and a half point favorite coming up for
the Natty on Monday, a week from tonight, but it
is dropped to eight the They are now eight point
favorites versus Notre Dame. So back to the game first
and foremost. When I start looking at the bonuses for
these coaches, Roy, I'd be jumping up hugging Sawyer too,
(01:17):
I think. But we'll leave that for later. We won't
have to talk about that right now. Man, I'm telling
you that that game was unbelievable and it was really
I like the description. It was basically two plays. Traveon
Henderson's play and then of course Sawyers scoop six too.
I don't know the rest that happened. Your take on
that because there were a lot of penalties against the Buckeyes.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yeah, those are the two. The two. I think the
play with Trayon Henderson was probably more impactful from a
momentum standpoint than Jack Sawyer's, I mean getting the stop
in general. If he had just got the sack and
it was on fourth down, that would have been a
big play. That the touchdown was the icing on the
cake or the cherry on top or the heightqu outside
of the rap or however you want to describe it.
But the trail Avion Henderson touchdown, you're talking about Texas
(02:03):
who's being down, held to zero points the entire first half.
Blade then they go down finally get a drive, they score,
They have all the momentum twenty five seconds or so left,
and then we run the simple screenplay and Trayvon Henderson
takes it to the house. It steals all the momentum
from the Longhorns going in the halftime. So now they
got to address that and get the momentum back and
(02:24):
try and figure out a way to get down and
go or coming into the second half. So I felt
like that play was probably the biggest play of the game.
But it's nothing like seeing a two hundred and sixty
five pound defensive end not only get a sack, not
only get a strip sack, but the ball divinely bounces
right into his hands. You can drop a football one
hundred times and you probably can't get that ball to
(02:46):
bounce back to you in that way while running while
having another grown man in your right arm, and so
to see him running down the field, I thought the
funniest part was the fact that Coach Day's hamstrings look
like they wouldn't let him open up a little bit
and taking them like it looked like you had that
old man trot like he was running a marathon. You know,
it took him about twenty seven steps to get to
(03:08):
almost a full stride, which is why when finally Jack
Sawyer got to the sideline, he had a little bit
of warmed up hamstring and goops so he can get
a little vertical jump into the man's arms. But it
was an exciting play. The stadium erupted. It definitely was
probably sixty forty horn fans the Buckeyes, but it sounded
like it was all Ohio State after that play. Man.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
When you saw that happen, and then when you look
back at all the replays and all the different ways
people are doing it on social media now, putting music
to it and all these other different things. The one
that I thought was the greatest was, you know, Coach
Day pointing like go that way, go that way, like
pointing toward the end zone like he was got turned around,
like you know Sawyer could get turned around or something
(03:50):
like that. That was so fun to watch. And clearly
as we come out on top know, and we're headed
to the national championship. There there's only one way to
you know, kind of described that, which is just pure elation, jubilation,
all of those things. And when you start talking about
so that was amazing, no question about that. The fact
(04:11):
that they were roommates, I guess at one points from
what I understand too, is probably extra icing on the
take for their cake for Sawyer. And now, so the
National Championship coming up obviously in a week Notre Dame
and Marcus Freeman, of course, the coach for Notre Dame,
your former teammate with the Buckeyes and so on. But
(04:31):
when you look at the Notre Dame hasn't beaten the
Buckeye since nineteen thirty six, and Notre Dame hasn't won
a national championship since nineteen eighty eight, all that stuff,
if you ask me, goes right out the window because
this is a whole new era. First of all, you're
not talking about the same players from those times, and
you're also talking about a very different coach. This guy,
(04:51):
he's a worker man, he's gritty. You and I talked
a little bit about him, you know, late last week.
But your thoughts on this game coming up. This is
going to be.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
I think, yeah, it's gonna be an epic showdown. I mean,
he's gritty, he's a former linebacker, and according to all
the interviews post game, apparently since he's black, that's like
a huge situation. Ideally, I guess that's gonna make him
win the football game. I love the fact that Marcus
redirected and just said, you want to get coaches, no
matter what their race is, and good coaches, good men
(05:24):
coaching other good young men to be great leaders. And
so when you have a person who can literally put
himself aside and all the attention and deflect it onto
his team, that's the mark of a true leader. I
don't really like all the attention being able to be
pointed towards one person. We know, in life, like and
in general, you need the help of other people. You
(05:46):
need to be able to have a good support system
around you and with you, and Marcus has done a
good job relating to the players. You see a lot
of these older coaches kind of bailing out because they
can't do it the old way. There their inability to
adapt and adjust to this new way of football, and
so many people complaining about it just here to state
and it's only going to keep evolving. So you see
the life of Coach Day, who's still in his mid forties,
(06:08):
and also Marcus Freeman, who's in his late thirties. These
guys are relating to these players. They have the energy
to help their players support them. They're listening to the
same type of music. If you look at Coach Day's
shoe collection, it's better than half of the NBA players
that throw their shoes on Instagram. He loves Aaron Max's.
Marcus Freeman listens to all types of great music. Well,
(06:29):
I don't know if it's great music, but it's the
music that the players listen to. But at the end
of the day, he's able to relate. Man, I'm super
excited for him. They're going to lose. I mean, I'm
not rooting for him by no especially the imagination, but
it's great to see him just dive into character and
integrity and use that to build this Notre Dame football team.
He's made Notre Dame somewhat likable because he's overcome some
(06:51):
great odds.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Coach Meyer said he thinks it's going to be close
in the first half and then the Buckeyes are going
to do what they always do, which is put the
hammer down in the second half, and they're not gonna
get be able to keep up at that point. Do
you like that assessment.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
I think this really it's a wise assessment. I look
at Marcus Freeman's Notre Dame team as a modern day
Jim Trussell, who coached both of us type of team.
Field position is extremely important, so there's a huge emphasis
on special teams. So they're not gonna make too many mistakes. Obviously,
they're gonna try and win the turnover margin, and they're
gonna try and use those running backs to win the
(07:28):
rushing margin, so they're gonna try and keep it close.
They don't have a lot of explosive players to make
explosive plays, and so they can't allow Ohio State to
get out in front. I think that's the thing that
helped kind of save Texas is Texas took the ball
or got the ball and open it, unlike Oregon, where
we went down to score right away, stopped them and
scored again. I think Marcus, They're gonna try and play
and keep it close until the second half, but we
(07:50):
just got too many weapons. I mean, you've got to
figure out what you want to do. Even with Jeremiah
Smith having one catch for three yards, I mean, here
you go, Cardnell Tate has seven catches and then you
got Treveon Henderson taking seventy five to the house. So
we have too many weapons. So you got to pick
your poison. I think Texas did a good job against us,
Notre Dame of probably trying to take some of those
things out of their cookbook. But at the end of
the day, that second half is going to be owned
(08:11):
by us as long as we don't turn the football over.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Very good, all right, in one week we will see
how this shakes out. The National Championship. Buck guys in it.
After a decade, they're back in it. Roy Hall, talk
to me about your foundation, Driven Foundation. Can people get
involved still? I know it's heavy during the holidays going
into the holidays, but what can people do right now
with the Driven Foundation and you know, get involved?
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Hey, I appreciate it. Well, the first thing they can
do is send me some high chooes, I mean a
kid like high cheoese. So we could send boat loads
send boxes of high choose to the station and then
we'll get that taken care of. But the second thing
is right now, it's huge on mentorship, and so right
now we're trying to figure out a way to get
more programs and more schools around the city of Columbus.
So if you'd like to get involved, you can sponsor
(08:56):
the program. You could sponsor a kid to be involved
with the pro program. You can also volunteer. There's so
many great listeners with great expertise. But if you want
to get involved and this sounds like something that you
would like to do, to sponsor an eight week program
to have a former Buckeye going and mentor young men
and young women on leadership and character and integrity, all
the things that we talk about. You can go to
(09:17):
stay driven dot org again that stay driven dot org
and sign up to be a volunteer or contact us
and let us know, hey, I'd like to sponsor a kid,
or sponsor the program, or my company wants to get involved.
So many people have been helpful from that standpoint, but
that's a great opportunity to teach these kids what it
takes to be successful in the real world.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
When are you leaving for Atlanta or are you leaving
for Atlanta.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
See see, here we go again? Like you like there? Yeah?
See like what like I can't tell you my schedules
after you just kind of craft on my high trewths.
Like now all of a sudden, you want to ask
me where I'm going?
Speaker 1 (09:53):
What are you talking about? I love them?
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Well, I'm talking about Chuck always acting funny man Like, Yeah,
I'm saying it's probably Strawberry. So try the rest of
them before you make the assessment. I think I'm gonna go.
I think I'm gonna go to Atlanta. I'm gonna try
and figure it out. You know, I'm trying to go
down there. I got a lot of brothers and cousins
and street cousins down there. You know, it's a lot
of brothers down in Atlanta. Man, we fit in down there,
So we're gonna go down right. I know Blazer won't
(10:19):
say right, he ain't got no cousins.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
That was me. I did say right that yeah right,
See I was trying to sound like Chuck right, Yeah, Yeah,
that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
No, I'm gonna make the trip, man, it'll be awesome. Yeah,
I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Man. Well, the reason I was asking is because hopefully
we can have you on if you're gonna be available
Friday or at least Monday, it would be nice. Now,
I don't know what you got going on, but I'll
do all that off the air. But man, it's such
a pleasure having you on to somebody who was there
and part of our best buck eye coverage, a storied
buck eye, all of those things. Roy hall Man, thank
(10:53):
you very much for joining us, and we'll talk to
you again soon. Again, it's uh the Driven Foundation website again,
it's uh driven dot org.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Correct, Yes, they driven dot org. And send those high
TuS the two three two three West Fifth Avenue, perfect.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Roy, Thanks man, we'll talk soon. See you man,
