Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dashly and the gam In Morning Show with DJ fourn
It saw t Morning Bustin's number one for.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Hip hop jamming ninety four or five.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Hi, everybody, good morning, Dashing the gym in Morning Show.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I was just saying to Nick Rocco off air, I
was like, you know, for a good chunk of our
audience and that you guys that listened to this show,
you know, we were dialed in when it came to
the Karen Read case. I mean, there was nobody better
to have on this show to talk about it than
Nick Rocco because Nick is a friend of Karen's but
also was inside of the courtroom. And you know, I
(00:39):
think back to the times of Nick coming on after
a day in court and filling us in on what
was going on, and people calling in and battling him
whether they thought Karen was innocent or guilty, and it
was just we were entrenched in it, right, It was
all we talked about for so long, and then boom,
we have a.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Hung jury and.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
It's like on to the next thing, right, I mean,
we see Karen's face still here and again on the news.
But after that hung jury verdict, black thereof I don't
know about you some, but I just felt such disappointment.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I wanted to know one way or the other.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Obviously I don't think she's guilty, that's just a personal
thing there, but I wanted an answer, especially at the.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
End of the day when you think about what the
Canton police did and how they acted like you just
thought there was no way that it wasn't clear as
day what the conviction was going to be.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Back so Nick is back to kind of fill us
in on on the things that have happened since. And Nick,
I know I've asked you this, but just to kind
of start here, you're back in court. We finally get
a quote verdict or an answer. It turns out to
be a hung jury. Was Karen disappointed in that or
did she still kind of consider that a win?
Speaker 4 (01:52):
I would say that, you know, I wouldn't say a win,
but she didn't go to jail, So yeah, I guess
technically a wine.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I think for me personally, not going to jail a win.
I'm not going to jail. Way we found from me,
So I get that.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
The only issue with that is, you know, they knew
they were going to have to do this all over again,
and that's where we are today doing it all over again.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
So let's start there. Hung jury.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
And I remember after that that news came out over
the next couple of weeks, whether it was Turtle Boy
or Barcel like, the certain people were posting that some
of the jury members were coming out and kind of
giving us a little bit of inside info on what
was happening. I know they were a quote hung jury,
but a hung jury can mean just one juror couldn't
(02:36):
make a decision. And what did what did we learn
was really happening inside that jury room.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
So just to start off, there was three charges second
degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a crime.
Five jurors had come out and said that all the
jurors in the jury room were not guilty for a
second degree murder and for leaving the scene of a crime.
And at first it was about six to six stuck
on manslaughter. They came back to the judge they you know,
(03:06):
back and forth a couple of times with a few notes.
They finally gave the two ye Rodrigrez statement to the jury,
which is basically, hey, listen, put your failings aside. You
guys need to come up with a decision. So then
it changed from six to six, it went I believe
eight to four, and then ultimately back to six to
six because the jurors who ended up changing their minds,
(03:26):
was like, no, this is not right. You know, she
didn't do this, So it was ended up being split
and they were hung. Now the reason why, and this
is a big issue in most court cases, you can
get a partial verdict guilty on one charge, hung on
another charge, not guilty on another charge. But in the
judge's instructions, she specifically said, you cannot fill out the
(03:49):
verdict forms unless you're unanimous on all three charges. Now,
they weren't unanimous on all three. They were only unanimous
on two. That's why some of these jurors decided to
speak out once they found out that the Commonwealth was
going to retry her on all three charges again. So
that's when they finally said, hey, whoa, we all came
to a decision on these two charges. She shouldn't be
(04:10):
charged with that again. And that's when her defense team
brought it to Judge Beverly Canoni's attention. She didn't really
seem to care, and that's how it ended up in
the Supreme Court, and.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
That manslaughter charge, the six to six anybody who had
say in that jury room.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
We don't know specific jurors, do we.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Non? Specifically the ones who did come out, some of
them had said that they were not guilty on those charges.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
I was wondering about this, okay.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
And then obviously, you know, if it's hung, there were
clearly some that believed she did it.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Okay, So fast forward, We're twelve days away from Christmas.
It's Friday, the thirteenth of December. I feel like that
was like a summertime thing. Where is Karen Reid at today?
Will she be tried again for these I know I
saw her face on the news this morning because I
see they're trying to get some woman on the stand
(05:05):
that they believe could kind of lend to the theory
that John O'Keefe was in fact attacked by a dog.
There's a lot of moving parts here, but just to
kind of break it down for everybody, Nick, where are
we at today, twelve days away from Christmas with the
Karen Reid case?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
So the Supreme Court basically has it in their hands
to decide what is going to happen with those two charges.
Either they're going to say you have no grounds to
stand on, you're going to be charged on all three again,
or they may potentially make the judge pull the jerry. Now,
the original court case for the second trial was supposed
(05:39):
to be in January. But if you don't have a
decision on what she's going to be charged with yet,
you can't have a court case in less than a month.
So Judge bev did finally decide to postpone it till April,
most likely due to the fact that the Supreme Court
hasn't made a decision yet, because I believe they're out
on Christmas break until like the middle of January. So
once all that comes back, that's really going to determine
(06:02):
how the second trial is going to go, because either
they're going to defend her on three charges or they're
just going to defend her on manslaughter. So that's that's
that's crucial. I mean, that's that's the difference of another
two month case or a two week case in a trial.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
And there is a world right in which she doesn't
get retried again, But they've decided that they want to
push forward and retry.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Her again, correct, I mean, one of the things in
that Vanity Fair article that was said was that they
couldn't even find a prosecutor who wanted to prosecute the case.
Hence why they had to go out and hire Hank
Brennan for seventy five thousand dollars to prosecute this case.
And he's admitted multiple times in court that he didn't
(06:46):
even watch the first trial. He hasn't read the transcripts.
And as far as doctor Marie Russell, the woman we
saw yesterday in court, she did testify in the first trial.
Judge Beverly Cononi declared her an ex in the first trial.
But Hank Brennan says, wait a minute, she's no expert.
She doesn't know what she's talking about.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
I refer to her as the dog lady, But she
is the one who is trying to that they're they're
using to try to prove and lend to the theory
that there was potentially a dog bite on d qspoty okay, yep.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
So they had a What they did yesterday was called
a war deer and it's basically they get to ask
the expert all the questions they want, then the judge
decides whether she's an expert or not. Now is Judge
bev going to go against her previous ruling saying she's
an expert who knows that she's very unpredictable in the
Karen Reid case. And Hank Brennan doesn't want her to
(07:41):
be able to testify because again it goes against their theory.
But I think what people are going to see in
the second trial is you're going to have a lot
more I think a lot more witnesses are going to
be called for the defense as far as experts go.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Right, So, just you know, personally speaking, I know you're
friendly with Karen. There was a chance that this there
was a hung jury. They couldn't they couldn't decide, but
that she could just move on with her life, right
that they didn't go back to trial.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
Now they're going back to trial.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
She asked to do this all over again, potentially, whether
she's looking at just the manslaughter tarde or all three.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Is she tired or is she still have does she
still have that fire?
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Like?
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Is she still like let's do it. Let's she still
had that fire in her.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Because it's it's exhausting for us even to talk about it.
I can't imagine being her through all this.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
Yeah, I mean, she she is one still standing strong.
Nothing is going to break her. I mean, look, you
know if if if anything was going to break her,
it was going to be them trying to humiliate her
in quote with text messages and those voicemails and and back.
Didn't you know She's still showing up every day, She's
still talking in front of the media. Nothing, nothing is
(08:54):
going to stop this woman from continuing the fight because
her and her team know the truth. A lot of
us out here in the public, we know the truth.
It just happens to be that the Commonwealth has a
lot to lose if Karen Reid is found to be
not guilty. Michael Morrissey the DA right. He was caught
using burner email addresses to email judges about Turtle Boy's case,
(09:18):
about Karen Reid's case, and he's one of the main
ones that is most likely going to be the target
of the FBI, which again the FBI is still investigating
this case. The FBI has not closed this case. For
the people who are out there saying they're done, they're
not coming. They may not move for another year, but
they are still involved.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Yeah, and by asking that question, I don't by any
means mean to say that she's tired in a sense
of like, you know, I'm just going to give up.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
It is what it is, but it's dream it's got
to be dreamed.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
And listen, she's she's become, you know, a local celebrity here.
I'm not going to lie to everybody. When she put
her house up for sale, I was looking through every
photo like I wanted to see that a house that
Karen Reid lived in. You know, it's like she has
just become this celebrity in the New England area.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Whether you think she's guilty or not, you know who
Karen Reid is.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
Yeah, and I'm sure I'm sure you know that people
took that into consideration when they went to go buy
the house, right, Like, did they want to buy the
house because of this situation? You know, I guess depending
on what side they were on. If they thought she
was guilty, they weren't even going to that open house.
If they thought she was innocent, maybe they wanted to
buy the house because because it might be history in
the future. But you know, she ows she owes so
(10:33):
much money that the sale of the house basically was
just to pay for what she owed unfortunately, and she
still has the civil trial going on. She's being ensued
by the family for wrongful death, which that that's still
moving along. The most recent update in the civil case
is that Karen cannot be deposed, but everybody else can
(10:54):
be still, So you know, the bars, all the witnesses,
everybody can still be posed except Karen Reid. And my
personal belief is that the O'Keefe family wanted to get
Karen Reid in the deposition so they could use it
against her or try to use it against her in
her second trial, and that didn't end up working out
for them.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Right. Could you ever picture if this goes to trial
and she's looking at whether she's looking at the bandslaughter,
she's looking at all three charges a day where Karen
gets on the stand.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
To be honest, I don't really think she has to.
She has. I mean, you know that's why she pays
Alan David the big bucks, right, I mean, these guys
know what they're doing. And then they just brought on
Attorney Alessi from New York. That guy is a powerhouse
as well. If anybody watched yesterday, he took a very
long time with doctor Marie Russell. The dog expert, just
(11:50):
to make sure everyone understands how qualified she is, no
matter what you know. Hank Brennan says, because she is older,
she can get tripped up sometimes. Some of this stuff
she did thirty years so she might never remember every
slight detail, but she knows what she's talking about, so
she has I mean, if you're going in for Murda,
she has the team you want. It's that simple. So
she really doesn't have to get up there. She may,
(12:12):
but I don't think she's going to.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
We're not learning as much as we were during the
thick of the trial on TV and seeing things on
social as much as we were. But if somebody listening
is right listening right now and they want to follow,
you know, every little update that you've given, maybe something
that they didn't even know. Maybe they had no idea
that there was a dog expert on the stand yesterday
involving the Karen Reid case. Is the Facebook page that
you started still active and is that the best place
(12:36):
you would say to go for accurate, up to date information.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
Yeah, you can go to the Facebook group Justice for Office,
John o'keith and Karen read Turtleboy Official or what I've
noticed throughout the Karen Reid trial. There's a lot of
independent media on YouTube. You can follow Turtle Boy, Melanie Little,
the Young Jerks, Masa Media, Brian LTL Media. I mean,
(13:01):
all these people cover this case almost on a daily
basis on YouTube, and it's not you know, it's not
coming from Channel seven, Channel five, where they're only telling
you what they want you to hear. Karen Reid had
court today didn't look good? Well why didn't it look good?
You know what I mean? And and you go, but
you go on YouTube and you find you can see
all the court. You can see everything there. Yeah, because
(13:22):
no one's being censored. So I think the best information
you can get is definitely going on YouTube or you know,
checking out the Facebook page. But it's very, very active. Still.
We are all still involved as much as we were before,
still raising money for her because the second trial is
going to cost her I'm sure over a million as well.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Crazy And just so we're clear, she has the same
squad behind her, correct, every all lawyers, her team, everybody's
going to stay for this next round yep.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
And then just added the uh, the actually in the
attorney from New York is doing a pro bono. That's
how much he believes in it.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Wow, he's got the chills.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
All right, Well, we all know how it is when
you come on. You've pissed people off and you've made
people happy giving us an update on where Karen is.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
And I think it's in our best interest, probably with
all this movement, to have Nick on at least once
a month leading up to the next childcause I just
don't want to get we were behind. I don't want
to play catch up anymore. So Nick, if you're cool,
we'll do that.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
That way.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
We're up to date on the very latest, getting ready
and gearing up for another Karen Reed trial.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Absolutely all right, buddy, thank you.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
You got it.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
It's just again, things happen, and Christmas is around the corner.
I mean, we just have things get There's so many
things happening in our own lives that you know we
might miss it.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
But this this woman's about to be literally tried again.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
And even when things are in a lull, it's still captivating,
you know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (14:41):
And true?
Speaker 1 (14:41):
And now to think that she has to spend a
million bucks again.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Yeah she I mean you just heard her there. First,
she sold her house not because she wanted to get
out of the neighborhood. She has no money, like, she
needs the money to pay her lawyer fees.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
I also heard she's doing some of those interviews too
because she's paying all these fees. Yeah, and lawyers are
not cheap.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
What could you offer her interview?
Speaker 1 (15:02):
I have an amazing tongue, man, Oh my god, I
don't so no, Like I can speak and I can
convince it to come on, where was your mind?
Speaker 4 (15:10):
Dad?
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Wow? Karen, if you're listening, my apologies.
