Two lifelong Houston sports guys named AdhaimTalking Your Teams series, Adam Clinton and
Adam Wexler are the A Team AWhat's Up Houston? Back at it again?
A Monday edition of The A TeamHere on Sports Talk seven ninety wex
(00:25):
over the air, AC right herethe show Killer Dan Matthews is our producer
as we take you up until sixo'clock tonight. Win At that point tape
delayed Astro spring training action we'll getunder way, so we are not allowed
to tell you the result of whathas already been concluded today. They did
not win. You're the worst. You're the absolute worst. It took you
(00:47):
less than twenty seconds to unfurl yourwet blanket and just slop it all over
the show. I'm not gonna changewhat i was doing before we ran tape
the lay games. I'm certainly notgonna change it to test the point of
us broadcasting. And if you're gonnabecause whether they win or lose doesn't bleeping
matter, Dan, do you thinkit matters? I think it matters at
least a little bit. It doesn'tmatter at all. Zero point zero percent
(01:11):
four really matter or the first twoand then they go to all minor leaguers.
But what Okay, Well hang ona second. Then if that's the
case, then they matter a little. If the first two innings matter,
result of the game doesn't matter. To may, I just said the results
don't matter. I gave the result. You can tie it together more.
(01:33):
Yes, the actual individual pitch bypitch results and some of the at bats
and some of the plays made inthe field do matter. It's nice to
see Bryce Matthews make up some playsat shortstop this past weekend. It was
great to hear maybe at six SpencerArraghetti throwing major league pitches against aj Hinch's
(01:55):
spring training ball club. But whenthe last pitch is thrown and the last
out is made and they tell youand our final today was, it just
doesn't matter. Okay. I'm gladto know that. So March twenty eighth
is when it will matter. Yeah, kind of. But you got another
one hundred and sixty one games togo, you're fine, Yeah, after
that exactly. So that's that's thenext level. You know where I come
(02:17):
in. And no, they matter. They matter because we actually care what
the standings say. If you careabout what the spring training standings say,
then I'm glad that you are ableto live the life the want that you
want to live. But I don'twant to live that life. Everybody can
live their own life. That's whatI said, interfere with ours. Yeah,
whatever, I'm not here to tellyou what to do. I'm telling
you what I think. I've nowadded that to some of my opinions.
(02:38):
The result of the game doesn't matter. But you know, to me the
most, there you go if Imust. And you know the most ironic
part of that whole thing, becauseI remember last year and the year before
that and the year before that. We've been doing the show almost well over
and nearly five years now. Infact, we're like a month shy,
I believe, of our fifth anniversary. And you're not gonna want to miss
our fifth anniversary party, by theway, he tell us to fall,
(03:00):
We're not going to Vegas. Andit doesn't have anything to do with a
Twitter follower account either, So noneof that, none of that's happening here.
But all the times I came inafter a harrowing loss or a brutal,
gut punch type defeat, and he'dbe like, that's just one of
one sixty two and then you getdown to the final day of the season
(03:21):
and you're having to rely on theSeattle Mariners to win, and you win
just so you win the division, which in hindsight, maybe they should have
lost it because the road team wonevery game in the ALCS. Those games
did matter. Well, it's moreabout you would come in like the sky
is falling. It's okay to careabout the result, but you cared more
about Oh my god, this teamis awful. How can these guys even
pretend to be they were off theattitude. I can read the attitude.
(03:45):
I can read your body language ina game they should have won that they
don't is You're done with these guys, Get them out of here. This
is a joke. They're not eventrying. This is awful. How am
I supposed to wake up tomorrow now? How am I supposed to do the
show today with that nonsense they puton our radio last night as they fall
to forty seven and twenty four. Now you are describing the fourth quarter of
the Rockets game. What about thethird quarter? Well, I was being
(04:08):
nice, I mean, Mike, good about the second quarter. The end
of the second quarter. I justlike, come on, man, much
much better team. Unfortunately, theRockets teased us by out playing that much
much better team for about eighteen orso minutes, built a sixteen point lead
against the Thunder, and then theThunder outscored him by thirty over the next
about eighteen minutes or so, obviouslyflipped a seventeen point deficit and into a
(04:31):
sizeable advantage and evened up the seasonseries with the Rockets a win a piece.
The next two games against the Thunderthis season will both be played in
Oklahoma City, the next of whichis your atypical late night Tuesday evening start
from OKC. Because gotta get theRockets Thunder in front of the national audience.
They got a TNT game coming up, they got an ESPN game coming
(04:54):
up, though, just in timefor them to not be playing their best
basketball. This season will featured infront of the big eyes of the nation.
Yeah. I don't like that onebit. I don't like that.
Every time we hear an update quoteunquote on Tari Easan, it's not an
update, it's more we don't reallyknow, and I feel like they should
go ahead and shut him down.Yeah, we're so close to the end
(05:15):
of the season. Twenty five andthirty two. There's twenty five games remaining.
He missed a thirty third game ofthe season last night. I was
there when he may was talking aboutit in pregame and obviously spoke with us
on the radio side as well beforeour game last night. And they continue
to try to get more information becauseI think the initial information indicated that he
(05:38):
needed to rest and then when hecame back after rest and rehab, he
would be able to ramp it upand he would be okay. And then
when he rehabbed and got ramped up, he wasn't okay, and there was
still pain there, discomfort in it, you know, just not really what
it should feel like. So theyhave kind of gone back to the drawing
board and are still waiting for moredoctor's information. Yesterday he said more imaging,
(06:00):
and I'm sure each day preceding agame or post practice he's gonna get
asked about it because you get toa certain point, you know, is
their value in having him get allthe way ramped up again to play the
final three weeks, or is itmore make more sense to have him spend
the next six months making sure thatyou know our course of action made the
most sense, is there a surgerythat's necessary. Whatever the case may be,
(06:24):
the end of the day, it'sit's the same story, at least
for twenty twenty three twenty four.Tarry Easton, coming off an awesome,
almost iron man rookie season, unfortunatelyhad a complete and total waste of a
year. And it's even worse becauseit's due to injury. He didn't just
not play this year. There wasa reason he didn't play any of significance
again. Even if he comes back, it won't be that he's going to
(06:44):
come back in the year three saying, man, I loved what I did
on the court last year. I'mlooking forward to making and taking the next
step I was all supposed to happenthis year. He's one of the core
Rockets six, a pair of playersfrom each of the last three drafts.
The most recent two are the onesthat I think everyone's most excited about,
and they keep showing that on afairly regular basis. Of men Thompson and
(07:05):
Cam Whitmore, and then on downthe line, there's enough basketball left for
a few guys to I think stillmake statements towards their future, but obviously
the future greatness of the Rockets maydepend on outside forces and basketball players that
aren't currently wearing Rockets uniform. Oh, I think that's very much in play.
I think very much. So youcould say that the Rockets. I
(07:27):
would even go so far as tosay they're in an NBA purgatory right now,
because the definition of purgatory, andthe Texans know it all too well,
is you're not quite good enough tomake any noise, whether it be
playing or even a playoff appearance atthis point. But you're not bad enough
and or your draft picks aren't goingto be there for you in the case
of the one that's going to okaysee this year, in all likelihood to
(07:50):
do anything about it in the draft. I wouldn't agree with purgatory because I
think if you're in purgatory, ifyou've put yourselves there and you can't get
out. They didn't put themselves therefor multiple years and are banking on some
player that isn't going to be great. And I know that even that statement
there has people shuddering, probably slammingon their brakes and hopefully you're paying attention
to the roads. But it's theyhave all the avenues to not be in
(08:16):
purgatory. Their record suggests you're ina place you don't want to be.
If you're going to be bad andmiss the play in tournament or playoffs,
then you want to be as badas possible and raise those lottery chances from
five point six percent to twenty sixand seven and whatever you can get to.
It makes obviously, it makes perfectsense. And they're they're a kind
of a bad spot in the standings. Although this year's draft is not too
(08:37):
inviting if you ask me, Hopefullyit's inviting to another GM when they put
that deal together. But that's thething. They've got their pick in this
draft, a pick in this year'sdraft because of the Brooklyn trade, and
they have assets in terms of bothplayers and future draft picks. If they
want to make a move, ifthere's a player that clearly wants out,
and there always are, they havethe ability, I think, to do
(08:58):
that. But I believe that ofthat six player corps, they have at
least one star, they might havetwo, and they have multiple players you
could see being on in my opinion, could be on an upper level team.
They got to make sure that theyknow who those guys are and those
guys continue to develop and now weactually get a chance to see it.
It's not like year one of Jalenand Alpern and then year two where we
(09:22):
see nothing and then finally they're runby a realistic coaching staff and we're starting
to see progress. We will seenothing. But with all these players,
I mean, it's to me it'sphenomenal that Amen Thompson and Cam Witmore have
played for only ema Udoka rather thanJabari and Tari and Jalen and Alpern that
spent a year or two years withthe previous coaching staff. And let's be
(09:45):
fair, the OKC Thunder are oneof the best teams in the West and
they're one of the best teams inthe league frankly, and they're gonna get
better. And that's the sad part. Like why I'm I'm so concerned about
the I'm honestly not. It's it'sit's never been about that. I mean,
at the end of the day, gets to be about that, But
when it is, I'm okay withthat. That's exactly what it was for
the Rockets. It wasn't about them. It was about Golden State being in
(10:07):
their way every year or somebody elseand that's the unfortunate part. But I
didn't care. In the big picture, you're winning fifty games, you're winning
sixty five games that you've built achampionship team. You just might not win
a championship. So I don't careif oka See gets gets good or gets
better. And they will and you'reright, but it doesn't matter to Houston
until they're a competitor of theirs that'sequal, and then they're not right now,
(10:31):
no, and it's probably not anovernight thing, but they've they will
turn. I think we'll look atthis season as a major building block and
not just the record I hope, which will be significantly better guaranteed, But
it's about how they play. LikeI like the fact that people complain about
what kind of offensive set is that? Or why is this happen? They're
real basketball complaints, not what arethey doing out there? They play good
(10:54):
defense for most of the most ofthe night, most of the nights.
And you know, last night wasa matchup of the best three point shooting
team in the NBA and the bestthree point shooting defensive team in the NBA.
Well, they won the match up. They hit seventeen of their thirty
five threes and beat down the Rocket'spretty good. So one of the items
that obviously sends us into the lastthree games against only Oklahoma City and Phoenix,
(11:16):
a five game stretch of only OklahomaCity and Phoenix. It goes back
to the table tomorrow night against OKCand then the rest of the road trip
takes them to Phoenix. Today wasa road game for the Astros, so
very few regulars were involved, butwe'll give you a little heads up on
what took place there over the weekend. And today we got an update on
(11:37):
number thirty five. So you knowthat's a staple of our spring training era
programming. I love it all throughoutthe late stages of this month and throughout
almost an entire month of March,we get to give you a JV update,
and we will do that when wecome back here on the A team.
Hey, it's blummer. The aighteencontinues with Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler.
(12:01):
There's more asses on this show thana certain mix a lot video.
I'm like, your mother would notbe proud right now, Baby's got those
hot Takes. Eighteen continues here ona Monday at issue of the program Sports
Talk seven ninety final Monday in February, and it feels like it. It's
like eighty five degrees outside, SoI hope you enjoyed winter. Although inevitably
(12:22):
WEX I know that sometime in themonth of March it'll be like forty degrees
for no apparent reason for a dayor two, and then we'll be back
up to the blowtorch and before youknow it, games will start counting.
Will Justin Verlander be ready for OpeningDay? We've already established he won't,
because WEX said so very first day. Just remember that, even though it's
(12:43):
so obvious, I'm no genius, yeah somewhat. What do we say today?
I sent a tweet out about somethingand someone said, Man, you
called that two weeks ago. I'mlike, Man, I guess I thought
whatever it was, I'm sure itwas obvious. I mean, I'm not
trying to be some you know. No, Matt, No, you don't
self gloss either most of the time. Now, would you come up with
(13:05):
a wet blanket or did I?No? I doubt that was me.
That doesn't sound like something I wouldsay. I wish I knew for sure,
But AnyWho, I think today's JVupdate non signature segment is significant,
don't you. I mean, that'sfor the listeners to decide, and that's
why we give him the opportunity todo so, to check in with what's
taking place down at MP in theseason and of course right now over at
(13:28):
Cacti Park of the Palm Beaches. That is, unfortunately for us, with
our lack of broadcasting games, youand I individually, it's not gonna be
much of a tongue twister because wejust don't say it normally. When you
are an in game broadcast or TVor radio, you often mention where you
are playing. That's gonna take alittle getting used to. But I was
actually just watching Travis's ceremonial first pitchto launch the new name of the ballpark,
(13:54):
plus the cutting of the ribbon. He threw the pitch. He first
of all, he came out, black jacket, black pants, black tank,
and lots of ice, super shiny, super awesome. He was definitely
dripped out. And then he wentout to the mound took the jacket off,
so he could, you know, like the baseball players that don't want
to be restricted by these awesome newNike Vapor jerseys, he didn't want to
(14:16):
be restricted by his blazer, hisjacket, so he took that off and
he set up on the mound, not on the rubber, but on the
mound, and he can, mindyou, this was over the weekend when
they opened their home portion of theseason. The day after they played on
the exact same field as the roadteam. Yes, he threw the pitch,
and it was just it was gooddistance. The catcher had to lean
(14:37):
over. It was a Nationals player, and he leaned over and caught it
in the left handed batter's box.But he didn't have to stand up.
He didn't have some great play. And it's definitely not gonna make the fitty
sent John Wall and others infamy ofmy gosh, you're an athlete and this
is what you can do with abaseball. Jeez, please. So it
was certainly I mean, I mean, you tell Curtis he's not an athlete,
(14:58):
and then see how we respond.I'll show him the video of his
first pitch and then I'll see howhe responds. Those other athletes are I'm
like, I seriously cannot believe thisis real. But it was good enough
that as he was coming off themount, he was obviously very hyped.
He was screaming, he swung atit, sit down. It was awesome.
But nonetheless, over the weekend wegot because we weren't with you since
(15:20):
Friday. We were here Friday forour normal show and we are back here
on Monday for our normal show.So in between, it's oftentimes really getting
you caught up with your JV update, and we'd love to do that for
you today. JV update from Saturday, JV update. It's all good news.
(15:45):
So take you over the weekend. What took place over the weekend when
manager Joe A. Spot A caughtup with the assembled media to give an
update on his picture and what didhe say? So, he's gonna go
no throw for a week. Hecame in and inflammation was down, but
(16:06):
we're just gonna, you know,be safe and we we're gonna reevaluate him
in a week. Nah, that'sjust a joke. That's the Forest Whitley
update. That's the Forest Whitley update. I'm sorry I shouldn't have done that
too. If it's true, ForestWhitley does have some finger inflammation, they're
gonna shut them down for about aweek and then they're gonna reevaluate they're being
very very cautious with us. Nowto the actual JV update from Joe Aspata
(16:30):
over the weekend. He's going tobe a light day today, and you
know the goal is for JV nexttime he gets on the mound probably you
know, just increases intensity and seeif we could just start mapping out maybe
place some light hitters. That's apoint a possibility for him. I'm not
gonna speculate on that, you know. I think the next bullpen the next
few days will determine that. Doesn'twant to speculate on opening GAG because that's
(16:52):
our job and we have already speculatedthat he will not be ready. That
that update with Brian McTaggert and theassembled media that remains there in Fla throughout
camp was from yesterday's availability. Today'savailability provided to this from Joe as he
said it would be a light dayyesterday. The anticipation is for Verlander tomorrow,
(17:15):
that is Tuesday, to throw anotherbullpen and increase the intensity as he
moves forward in his rehab. Andif you caught up with our good friend
Chandler Rome on the Athletic where hepens his articles and he joins us each
week Wednesday's usually at five o'clock. He had a lot more from Verlander,
saying the same things. Things havegone in the right direction. Progress,
(17:37):
progress is being made. Where it'sgoing is what you'd hope to see.
But if you were watching or listeningto the games over the weekend, they
also you know, Josh Miller andothers were talking about the situation, which
to me was obvious the day hesaid he was a couple weeks back.
Well, if he said all thistwo or three weeks before spring training and
he was trying to get restarted, then that would be fine. Spring training
(18:00):
isn't twenty weeks long. Makes itvery difficult to make up a couple of
weeks when you only have a coupleof weeks. So the idea that he
would be ready for spring training neverentered my mind, and it shouldn't matter
to people. It's like any otherinjury of significance. He's going to miss
time or he's not going to beat his best. When would you like
that to occur? If you feellike you have any control over it,
(18:22):
no rush, take your time.Come back when you can pick me to
have an April in the first inthe day on the day that he would
have been starting, if you wantto look at it that way. Yeah,
I mean roughly thirty games into theseason is where they will be when
they hit May. And last yearhe ended up pitching in the thirty second
game of the year for the Mets. But again there was a definitive termed
(18:45):
we found this, you got hurthere injury. In his case, he
continues to work and continues to makeprogress in a way that suggests, at
least to the non doctor that's talkingto you right now, there's no injury.
There's no problem. This is purelytiming. He's not going to make
five spring training appearance. He's notgoing to ramp up as normal unless they
(19:07):
tell us something different, unless hefeels something different, unless something occurs.
This is just that this is atiming issue. When we start getting the
Lance mccolors esquebs though, that's whenyou can start panic. Well, the
good news is Lance, and Iknow this is not against Lance. This
is any picture during the regular season. If Lance is going through a rehab
program and is throwing, unless Ieat, sleep, and drink at minute
(19:27):
made Park or his personal workout facility, I'm not going to see it.
But we're at spring training. He'sgoing to work on the spring training fields.
You're going to see it, andthey're going to tell you about it.
We actually are part of watching thisunfold. So that's why I don't
think it's any kind of you knowwhat's going on here? Go to our
last segment. You have you beenwatching Tarry Easton ramp up his workouts.
(19:49):
No, it's a little bit moreof a dark situation. I mean,
I was able to walk up tothe guy and ask him when he was
coming back, but he had aboutas good an answer as anybody else I
could have. And keep in mind, he said things that just turned out
to not be true. They weren'ta lie, but he didn't know what
was going to happen in the future. And that's guy's well, it's based
on how he's progressing, right, and Lances has fallen to that as well.
(20:11):
Has nothing to do with the individual, has nothing to do with the
comments that he's making because they're onpoint and they're accurate. He's more frustrated
than all of us come by theway, So again I don't I definitely
there's no panic Bush button at allon JV. I don't care that he
misses a Yankee series, I don'tcare if he misses twenty thirty games.
That stuff doesn't It doesn't FaZe me. With this team, they're not on
such a oh my gosh. Withouthim, they're sunk. They's played almost
(20:33):
an entire season without him, andthe guy that got back isn't even the
as the kids say him, versionof Justin Verlander. He's a top starter.
He's a front end of the rotationstarter. He probably will get zero
votes on anybody's ballot for the CyYoung Award this year or year in the
top five. If he does, that would be unimpressive. But to me,
(20:57):
that is a huge prize. Ifthat actually happened and he was one
of the five best American League pitchersthis year, I mean by Rangers,
by most of the American League. You're sunk if that happens. Yeah,
And look, I hope there's apleasant surprise with one or both of Lance
McCullers and Luis Garcia. I don'tthink there will be, not at this
(21:18):
point anyways. But well, whilewe're at it, don't you want to
hear about JP France from Joe Aspota? Yes? Maybe one more side,
a really good side but his firstidea that they looked really good and sharpened.
I'm bull what's coming out nice.So we'll see the next time he
gets from the mount and see howit feels in light of when he might
throw live VP talking about JP Franceagain. All good news there. Although
(21:40):
I couldn't help my childish, hungrybrain. I heard him talk about maybe
another side. It was a reallygood side. I feel like we'll need
to grab that for a future Idon't know, Fantasy Vive Steel or eighteen
Friday draft where we draft best sidesand we get Joe Aspada to a spouse
about it was a really good side. It was a good side for him
(22:00):
and well, I felt like itwould fit in there pretty nicely. We
try to grab audio we hear ona whim, like if someone says that
of the A team is gonna takethe field, we'll probably pull that for
you and use it in the future. Yeah, maybe very very soon.
You never know. All right,We'll continue here on the A Team Sports
Talk seven nine. He don't forgetcoming up in the four o'clock hour,
The good, the bad, andthe ugly from over the weekends, Several
(22:21):
candidates are in place for that, but how about this, how about some
misdirection. Let's put it that wayon not only Alex Bregman as to whether
or not he might remain with theAstros, but there's chatter about his agent.
We'll explain when we come back.If you can buy Rockets gear on
it, you can hear us onits listen live for free on any smart
(22:47):
device. A team on a Monday, I hope everybody enjoyed their weekends as
much as everybody else enjoyed their weekends. Wex say, seeing Dan here with
you and plenty to get into. There was action, real life overnight baseball
activity on the free agency front thisweekend. I know it's supposed to be
four twenty in the afternoon, butthe least Jeff Passon could have done when
(23:08):
he broke the news on Cody Bellingerwas bang that out at four to twenty
in the morning. I mean itwas like two twenty two thirty or whatever
time it was. But he justdidn't want to get beaten by all the
other people that did not wake upto the text from the agent, and
he did so. Cody Bellinger getsnot tremendous length and not tremendous money,
(23:30):
but pretty good money to remain ina Chicago Cub the first of the Boris
four, like the Fantastic four, except not even close to get a deal
this offseason, so he only misseda handful of day as a Cubs camp.
He's obviously familiar with some of thethings the Cubs liked to do.
I would say he's familiar with hisuniform, but nobody in Major League Baseball
is familiar with their uniform because ofthe awesome changes that have been made.
(23:53):
But nonetheless, he finds a homeand he can now go back to.
Well, the answer to that questionshould be really fun for the Cubs to
find out what will he go backto? Will he go back to what
he did as a Cub or willhe go back to what he was before
he was in a contract year thatgot him the money he just got from
(24:15):
the Cubs. Definitely something to consideras you think about the other Boris three
and the other Boris clients. Beforewe get to Alex Bregman's situation and some
of the stuff he had to say. He was on a Baseball Tonight podcast
and some of the things that thetwo hosts had to say about he and
his agent's situation with Houston. Maybethe next client is ready to sign a
(24:37):
deal, and that could be JordanMontgomery. We know where he was all
too well, unfortunately. I'm surethe Yankees know where he used to be.
I'm sure the Cardinals knew where heused to be. But it looks
like there's a possibility that a differentAmerican League East team will be the team
that says, here you go,Monty, come pitch for us. And
again it'll be about the money. The Rangers have put a pause on their
major spending. It's pretty fair tosay they've spent plenty of money. They're
(25:00):
paying Seeger, they're paying to Gram, they're paying Simeon, and maybe it's
just at some point enough was enough. No one says they're out of it,
but it certainly doesn't feel like he'sgoing to sign there if it's been
this long, and other teams arestill talking deals with him, the Red
Sox being one of them, andthey're not. But I couldn't let this
little, you know how our goodfriends over in the TV business. Usually
(25:25):
sports directors will take some time outof their sportscast to deliver a you know,
final take my column before your version, you know well before you go
sounds more like here's what's going ontonight on our late night talkie show.
But you know, just kind ofmy my. My editorial in this case
(25:45):
was called an extra point. Wego to we go to Dallas for this
very important plea from w FAA,and I cut out only the parts that
Adam wanted to hear. How manyopportunities are you going to get to defend
a World's Series championship? This maybe the only opportunity. I cut it
right there. He's making a pleato Rangers owner, it's time to go
(26:11):
get Monty. How many times areyou going to get an opportunity to defend
a World Series Championship? This maybe the only time. I decided to
cut it right there because I thinkthat, in fact, it will be
the only time they have a chanceto defend their World Series Championship. Is
that a Dallas guy? Well,of course WFAA, Dallas station. That's
Mike Leslie. Okay, that's allright, I'm familiar now. I was
(26:33):
trying to put the voice to aface, or at least a person.
I've heard his name many times, and I have never seen him in before
today, not even when we wereup there in October. He he meant,
I should amend that I never sawhim and said, oh, that's
Mike Leslie. He could have walkedthrough the room exactly, never would have
known. Okay, you know,I agree with you. By the way.
What's the team that you think inthe ala Austin? Oh okay,
(26:56):
I didn't know which one you were. I mean, there was reports today
that they've will continue to engage inconversations. Their payroll suggests. Again,
I wouldn't exactly say they're going forit, because their rosters suggest they have
the fourth best team, fifth bestteam in the division, which is if
you're fifth, you can't go tothe playoffs. But I do think they
usually spend money and try to youknow, after they unloaded all these players
(27:19):
over the last handful of years.I think they're willing to be that team.
I actually think teams are as afraidof him as maybe anybody else on
that boris for group like he's gonnaturn into a pumpkin. Well, just
like you're going to if you ifyou're the team that pays them what they're
asking, then you're paying him tobe your race. He's been the ace
of any staff for about twenty minutesof his major league career, and it
(27:41):
was last year. It's the perfectstorm. Not only did he become an
ace, he became an ace fora team that was going to the playoffs.
He the as the ace. Hehelped them blow through everybody before they
got to Houston, ultimately helped thembeat Houston, and then part of the
team that beat Arizona won a worldSee everything about that team and everything about
the way things went for the Astros. It took for them to squeak by
(28:06):
Well, yeah, I mean thatthat was everybody. Yes it is.
And we'll play something from Jim Crane. He and Dana Brown were making the
rounds during the Astros games this weekend, so they were on with the with
the broadcast, and something he saidabout that it's just the way that it
came out was exactly what we sayall the time. And I don't mean
to say Jordan Montgomery's not a verygood pitcher. He was good for the
(28:26):
Yankees. I was a little surprisedthey gave him up to get Steph Curry
to go play center field for them. Oh wait, that's Harrison Vader.
Another mouthpiece chure. It's hard totell them apart. No, he doesn't
show it. He keeps it onthe outside of his mouth. That's the
correct nomenclature there. So it's ais it a lip piece, it's a
(28:48):
it's a DNA display. But henow, in fairness to Harrison, what's
the big deal. They're not aplayer within seventy five yards of him,
feet him, and when he getsangry and throws it down, it doesn't
hit anybody in very expensive seats mostof the time. Yeah, I think
you're you're You're probably okay. You'reprobably okay. But Montgomery went from being
pretty good with the Yankees, tooreally good with Saint Louis to an ace
(29:11):
with the Rangers over about a thirdof a season, and now he'll get
paid. Streams are a little concerned, and they should be. Why would
we, I know, he wasan ace again for twenty He's been pitching
since twenty seven seens. Two teamslet him go. Well, Yeah,
like I said, I think thatthe Cardinals were smart. We're out of
the race. Let's go get something, get going. I mean, they
(29:33):
have plenty of pitching today, Ithink. But the deal that they made
looks awful because Harrison Vader is alsonot a Yankee anymore. And they didn't
do anything with Harrison Vater as ateam. Yeah, they got swept in
the ALCS. If that does anythingfor you, Yeah, just basically it
didn't work. So that's why Ithink that. But it's it's something to
consider as to why they're out there. We heard the nonsense reason about Blake
(29:56):
Snell not being able to handle itup East signed Bob knighton know Nothing,
and then you got to figure what'sMatt Chapman. Those are the three Boris
four Cody is a cub where willthe others land? And most importantly to
us, Boris is the agent forAlex Bregmant. Yeah, and I was
talking to Gordy before the show aboutthis and it's, you know, it's
(30:17):
kind of the prevailing thought. Now, I do want to say before I
go any further that, by allaccounts, next off season of free agency,
a lot of people think it's goingto be much more wild, whatever
that means, Like, would yousay this has been a pretty tame offseason
from that standpoint. I mean, some deals have been signed, it's tame
(30:38):
in the free agency world. Imean except the biggest deal in the history
of baseball was signed in free agency. But that's almost like its own category
because we knew that was coming. And the most available American League player went
to the National League, and themost available National League player went to the
American League. And I don't meanlike, I mean the best player that
could have possibly moved. Yeah, want Soto changed teams this offseason? Show
(31:02):
Hey Otani changed teams this offseason.Only one of them has a long term
deal. How could you imagine moretalent than that? Like that's honestly,
those are the two biggest difference makingplayers that anybody thought could end up on
a new team, and they bothdid. Right. But even having said
that, though, I think nextoffseason there's going to be a slew of
names that while they will definitely probablywell a lot of them might change teams.
(31:27):
I'm just wondering whether or not theBoris clients, for example, get
the money that they're after. Andthat includes Alex Bregman. Like, all
we're hearing about is Alex Bregman aboutto have the best season of his life.
A he's been working out like afiend and documenting it. He said
it, yeah, exactly literally usedthose words. But you know, other
people are alluding to it like they'renot gonna be surprised. I've said it
(31:49):
because this guy's the ultimate. I'min a contract year and I have the
resume to do it. Guy.Now you know something that that Chandler Rome
said. His numbers have been steadilydeclining from I think it was the twenty
nineteen season was his best ever. Now injuries have factored into that, but
he looks to be healthy, andhe's in a contract season. I'm not
(32:12):
gonna bet against that guy. Justput it that way. And where is
he batting in the lineup? Well, definitely a conversation to be had on
the twenty sixth of February, Butagain in his own words about being the
best season upcoming, I feel likewe are in a ten times better spot
than we even were then last year. In the second half. It's just
how I'm moving and we've found whatwas good, what kind of drills we
(32:37):
needed to do, and I expectto have the best season I've ever had.
I expect to have the best seasonI ever had. His last four
years have been pretty comparable. Ifhe asked me, OPS plus ranging from
one twenty two to one thirty four, but three of those four seasons were
between or well one thirteen and onetwenty two, which is very very similar.
(32:57):
Obviously, his ops has been betweenseven and seventy seven and eight oh
one. Last year it was eightoh four. His seasons before that eight
twenty seven, nine twenty six,and ten to fifteen. Those are the
three best seasons of his career.Ten to fifteen was what eighteen, I'm
runner up to Mike Trout for MVPH How many home runs do you have
(33:17):
that year? Forty one? Ithink he had forty. The next year
in nineteen correct forty one was nineteenoh forty one was nineteen had thirty one.
The previous year as no seasons overtwenty five cents, but one of
them was a COVID season, sothat's a little unfair. Yeah, he
was awful in twenty twenty, onlyhad six homers, so were the Astros,
and they still almost went back tothe Mickey Mouse World Series. Good
(33:39):
thing they didn't win that one. That'd be embarrassing for whoever did. All
Right, so when we come back, we're gonna hear more from Alex Bregman,
And it's a very interesting SoundBite becausehe talks about, Oh, I
don't know, some very choice namesthat have not only come up in free
agency but then left the Houston Astros, and how that pertains to his Sitch
(34:00):
situation. You're not going to wantto miss that when we come back.
Adam and Adam are very, verydedicated fans, such big fans. In
fact, one of them actually paysfor his favorite porn. Paying for porn,
Now that's dedication. Folks. Backto eighteen premium on Sports Talk seven
(34:22):
ninety. You're gonna get your money'sworth. It is the eighteen here on
Sports Talk seven ninety. All right, So will he or won't he?
And that applies to two guys.I think he will be awesome this year.
I do too. Do you thinkthe other guy will be awesome in
the postseason because he can't be muchworse? Yeah, but will he in
terms of Tuck he's coming back,We're good. Yeah, he's got another
(34:45):
two years in an Astros for guaranteed. Yep. Who is more likely to
be in an Astros' uniform in twentytwenty seven. Yeah, it's a great
question. So we alluded to thefact that Alex Bregman was on the baseball
to podcast with Dave chanfel Buster Onlyand obviously a couple of different topics of
interest to us came up during thatinterview, specifically this upcoming season and Bregman's
(35:10):
sole focus. He has some experiencewith this looking around the locker room,
but initially he was talking about howhe's planning on, you know, tunnel
visioning his twenty twenty four season withthe Astros. You know, honestly,
it came this offseason. The bestadvice I got was from our hitting coach,
Snit. Him and I are likebrothers, and he the first thing
(35:34):
he said to me when we gotwhen he came to Arizona for us that
when we started hitting, was hey, this year, we're not talking about
a single thing about anything. Butthis year that's it. We're focused right
now on being the best player wecan possibly be. I don't want to
hear you talk like he'll he'll checkme on things like if I if I
(35:55):
start talking about something like, we'renot talking about that. So I've kind
of taken that mentality from the startof the offseason as the a I'm completely
focused on being a good baseball playerand helping this team win and not let
my mind, get off of it. Fifty home runs in coming, fifty
(36:15):
home runs in coming. Suck it, al West, You're done. You
mentioned he with this locker room thathe's been in during his career. Became
an astro in twenty sixteen. He'sbeen here for all of these postseasons of
CS's and World Series and World Serieschampionships, and he should not been to
the ALCS since coming up. That'scrazy. So he's experienced some of this
(36:36):
with a lot of those guys whono longer are experiencing it with him.
So that was the beginning of hisanswer about his focus. Listen to how
he describes these former teammates and whathe's saying from them and definitely who they
are. I've been fortunate to bearound guys, like you said, like
Corre, Don Springer, Don Colengone into their final year, and the
(37:00):
guys were great teammates, completely focusedon winning, completely focused on helping our
team win, and for me,that's the most fun thing to do in
baseball. So I'm going to tryand do that. And you and I
having been around for all of thosedepartures and the seasons prior to them,
including the postseason runs, that isone hundred and fifty percent accurate. And
(37:21):
with the exception of Cole, whoyou know, went scorch darth right there
at the very last second, theyall were I mean, you know,
as as teammates, as members ofthe organization, as members of the community,
as anything that you wanted them tobe. They were on top of
their games in all of those facets, including on the field. And I
heard him say it, and I'mlike, did he intentionally leave a certain
(37:45):
phrase out? Did he accidentally leavea certain phrase out? Was it intended
or obvious that that's what he meant? Because he said, you know,
Korea and dud and Cole all wentinto their final year, and then they
went on and played really good andhelped just win and Da Da Da the
final their final year as an astro, their final year of their contract,
(38:06):
or as he literally said it,they all went into their final year like
it was a foregone conclusion. Mhm, you guys can interpret it any
way. You wish he didn't mentional too. They well all two they
didn't go into his Finalistically, hedidn't go into his final year either time.
Correct. So the moral we've learnedfrom this, Adam Wexler is that
(38:29):
as long as the Astros signed Bregmanto a deal before opening day will be
good. Rationalize this, you said, you know he came up in twenty
sixteen, first full season, twentyseventeen, nothing but CS's since then a
couple World Series championships. So he'sgonna go out there and best season of
his career. He's gonna hit thirtyfive bombs. He's gonna have eighty plus
(38:52):
extra base hits. He's going tohave an OPS plus in the upper one
forties or fifties. Is gonna havean OPS in the nine hundreds, and
be one of the handful of playersthat the Astros see on the MVP ballot
and deservedly so. He's gonna helpthis team win ninety five, ninety six
ninety seven games, win a division, easily, have an off week when
(39:14):
the playoffs begin as a one ortwo seeded division winner, and do what
they always do, advance in theplayoffs to at least the CS. If
they get to the World Series again, and it turns into his final year,
at some point, you have tosay, man, he gave us
eight straight CSS and five World Seriesappearances, maybe a third title. You
(39:37):
can be greedy. You can besad, but what else I mean,
Okay, you gave us everything hehad. I'd love to keep you here.
Here's how he's gonna go. Ifhe does leave, You're going to
do the same thing you did withKorea and the same thing you did with
Springer. You're not gonna do thesame thing you do with Cole because that's
different, especially with where he went. And you're going to say, you
(40:00):
know what, it sucks, butit sucks more for him because we're gonna
keep winning here in Houston, andhe's likely not going to keep winning at
that level wherever he goes at fillingthe blank, unless he's a Yankee or
a Dodger. You mean specifically ifhe's a Yankee, not unless well,
uh, now they're gonna win becauseBregman got there. Well yeah, now
(40:20):
they have championship pedigree. Bums onthat team right now. I have done
heading into the final year for Cole, Correa Springer. As again, as
you headed into that year, youcould have easily guessed Garrett Cole was going
to be a Yankee. The followingyear you would have never guessed George Springer
was about to be a Blue Jayand Carlos Carrea was about to be a
twin by way of the Mets andthe Giants twice. It's just incredible.
(40:45):
So that's the kind of well Ithink we're forecasting. He's going to either
go to a huge spending winner,or he's going to Arizona. He's going
to Arizona. That's where it's goingto be if he does leave. It's
all the signs are there. Actually, there's never been more of an obvious
destination for a guy going into hisfinal year. If he does leave the
Astros, he's already put his houseon the market. He's been training in
(41:07):
Arizona, and Arizona is actually theclosest MLB market to his home with Albuquerque,
New Mexico. It makes too muchsense. Plus, they have money
to spend on a guy like AlexBregman, who will get his bag and
they'll never win anything. I know, they just went to the World Series,
but they're not gonna win anything. They already have a World Series in
franchise history. Well, Randy Johnsonand Kurt Shillings Slock aren't walking to men
(41:28):
doors. I should know that obviouslywas the year that George Bush threw out
a first pitch of the World Series'stwo thousand and one, so it's two
thousand and one strategery. So sincetwo thousand and one they've won one.
The Rangers have won one. Everybodywanted the Yankees to win after nine to
eleven, but it didn't go asplanned. The Diamondbacks won because Gonzo was
(41:50):
rooting, so he hit a bleederthat went just over. He would have
grounded out to third. He hita he muscled a ball just over the
drawn in infield to say, sorry, Mariano, isn't that the most like
horrific way to lose a World Series? A bloop that's like getting doubled off
(42:13):
by Michael Brantley. That's like hittingthe foul pole. Why did you have
to do that? We were makingfun of other teams, and you made
fun of the Astros. That's nothow it works on this show. WEX
so what so what's one more? What's what's it like? It's like what
it's like? I ran out. That's why I went to the other side.
I went to the dark side. It's like losing the Division on the
last day of the year to sometriple A pitcher. There you go,
(42:35):
yeah, but then they beat theAstros and won the World Series. That's
what you'd say next, That isa bad guy. What if I was
the guy at last night's game wearingan Adulas Garcia Jersey? What an absolute
a hole? For real? Howbig of at last night's Rockets game between
the Thunder and the Houston rock wearingan Adules Texas Rangers number fifty three?
And it was crazy Jersey. Hegot up and he had a syringe out
(42:59):
of his ass. It was thedamnest thing I've ever seen. Drinking an
adult beverage too. Yeah, yeah, he looked like he had been overtraining.
Nonetheless, he helped us get throughour number one of the show,
two more hours still to go,hit you with the good, the bad,
the ugly, as we always doduring our signature segment. Some more
from what took place over the weekend. Everybody's favorite quarterback from Denver via Seattle
(43:22):
and the all the rage to talkabout college basketball and the unsafe conditions that
we're asking our athletes to compete in. Well, I mean, after the
buzzer goes off, of course,we can't be storming those courts now,
can we? Let me tell youabout being elites? Classical Elite Buick GMC.

(44:32):
Adam Talking Your Teams series. AdamClinton and Adam Wexler are da Team A.
It is the A team here onSports Talk seven ninety hour, number
two of three. Here on theprogram wex AC show Killer Dan Matthews with
(44:54):
you until six o'clock when Renault no, sorry, I'm sorry Araghetty, which
everybody's calling Spaghetti on the Socials today, Yeah, I won't be doing that.
Spencer Araghedy got the start today forthe Astros for a game that we
will bring you. When we completeour broadcast day here on Sports Talk seven
ninety, you'll get to hear alittle bit from Robert and Todd working today's
(45:17):
radio broadcast Spaghetti. There was noTV game today, There will be tomorrow,
and we will have all you baseballgames for you, whether live or
via tape delay. Almost all ofthe games will bring you this spring will
be live. Today's game is notone of them, So that comes your
way at six o'clock. I cantell you because I don't mind telling you
that Spencer Araghedtty did the same thingthat their previous starters have done, as
(45:43):
they've sent you know. They hada split squad game on Sunday, Hunter
Brown through in the Big League orthe Big Game. I guess of the
two, if you would call itthat Spencer threw in the only game today.
Renel Blanco got the start in theirinitial game over the weekend and you
got two shut out innings from allthree of them to start up there,
twenty twenty four spring training, workingon pitches, working on stuff they've been
(46:07):
working on all off season. That'swhat you get out of your first handful
of spring training games, and it'sall good news. I did have a
chance to watch a lot of thesepitches between Blanco and Brown and some of
the highlights from Arighetti. I'm surewe'll get to see definitely look pretty sharp,
and I hope there is more ofthat to come. But again,
I'm not going to too much therebecause very easily go back out the next
(46:30):
start and it's a completely different story. Bottom line is go out, get
your work in, get ramped up. Something interesting I thought that we heard
from Dana Brown over the weekend andhe was on with the radio side this
weekend is and I think it's asmart decision. They want to keep Renel
Blanco stretched out as a starter,as in he could very well be an
(46:51):
option to be on the opening weekstarting rotation. Broke camp with the team
last year. I think there's reasonsto believe they will have questions about who
is actually going to pitch, youknow, as of today, for Amber
Valdez is good to go, ChristianJavier is good to go, Hunter Brown
is good to go, Jose orKeaty is healthy, like I would call
(47:14):
him good to go, But thenthe other four of the eight or not.
Obviously, it's it's a knot forJV and JP, and it's clearly
not going to be available for Luisand Lance for quite some time. Once
that's only four guys, So Renelhas to be at least a consideration,
and some of the other pitchers thatthey have in camp would all could also
become considerations. Brandon Black always fitsin that group. But these are all
(47:37):
things they have to concern themselves withbeyond just watching how does this guy pitch
and where he might fit. Atsome point this year, they're opening set
of games, somebody is likely goingto factor in because they're not going to
give the ball to Framber in Gamefive after he pitches in Game one.
I hope, yeah, no,it's again. This is a This is
(47:58):
also somewhat of a February twenty sixthdecision or conversation, Like we're like talking
about Jordan hitting in the two spot, for example, Well, we'll get
to that and I do want totalk about it because that one's funny.
Oh, I think the other one'sreal. I mean the other four pitchers
literally to me, cannot pitch openingweek. JP Frantz better be ramping up,
(48:19):
like immediately. If you're really gonnatrot them out there in a game
against Toronto the opening week of theseason, expect them to give you sixty
five or seventy pitches and that's maybefour innings, maybe just depending on how
things go. But JB. Camptonand that leaves you short at the beginning
of the season. They won't beshort for much of the season, I
don't think. But again, ifanything else happens, and that's the real
(48:39):
reason that you do it, iffor some reason one of the guys you're
counting on to be healthy at thestart of the season has to be slowed
down or something comes up. Whenyou don't want to get caught, I
think I'll say this right, Youdon't want to get caught with your new
sea through pants on? Is thathow the saying has to go now,
regret, I don't think you're supposedto say you don't want to get caught
(48:59):
with your payants down. But thenew sea through pants would actually be the
same thing because you can see throughthem, right, So you don't want
to get the Astros don't want toget caught with their new sea through pants
on. That's correct, God,as weird as it is. But yeah,
do you want to dive into Jordonnow? Yeah? Tell me where
this comes from? Jordon batting secondfor the Astros. Somehow in our vast
(49:21):
social platforms out there in the sportstalk radio world, this became a thing.
Why, I believe, Well,I don't know if Brian McTaggart's tweet
was the first example of this.Jordan Alvarez will make his spring training debut
in the game tomorrow back at theirhome field, okay, And it was
(49:42):
based off the conversation he had withJoe Aspatta, who was saying he was
toying with the idea. I guessis how and I'm paraphrasing how he was
sort of phrasing it. I guessof putting Jordon in the two hole,
which would mean Altuve, Jordon,Bregman and Tucker, which someone I think
had responded to McTaggart's tweet saying, well, if that's the lineup, then
(50:04):
I'm fine with it. And McTaggartresponded, that's what it would be after
four. You know, we'll assumehow could it not be? Well,
right, But you know, Idon't know. If I don't know what
the other option would be, Idon't want I don't know what the alternative
would be. If you look atit from the standpoint of Jordon's getting more
at bats purely, I mean, the math tells you, yeah, that's
(50:29):
great, he's behind al Tuove. But there's some people that said that would
say, well, I like Bregmannbeing protected by having Jordon behind him in
the lineup, and I understand thattoo. But the bottom line is you're
getting a guy who is capable ofnot just you know, crushing homers,
but getting hits of all types, getting more at bats. That's what this
(50:52):
comes down to. I mean, you strip everything away. I know that
sounds simplistic, but sometimes baseball issimplistic, you know, like playing your
best catcher for example. Sometimes it'sjust very simple to make a decision that's
good for the team. Well, what if he played him and batt him
ninth, you wouldn't be saying thatputive. But if he was the best
catcher, he wouldn't be batting ninth. Freddy Freeman six hundred and thirty seven
(51:16):
at bats last year, batting second. Corey Seeger four hundred and seventy seven
at bats last year, and againhe missed forty games batting second. Alex
Bregman, for the majority of lastseason was the number two hitter. Julio
Rigez spent more than half of hisseason as the two hole hitter. Arson
Judge was almost exclusively the Yankees twohole hitter. This isn't nuts and jord
(51:43):
just have to do it. I'mnot sure that I would do it.
I'm not going to complain about it. No, But where did be holes
hit? U not second? That'swhy people are like, well, oh
my god, he's got your homerun here. He's not just a home
run hitter. Where did you putyour infield to defense? The game's changed,
man, right you could shift fourback, you cannot shift now.
(52:07):
So you just gotta the idea ofthese guys batting higher in the order,
first or second, because both ofthose are options. I didn't mention Otani.
You know how many times he battednear the top of the Angels order
last year ahead of the third spottrout. Same thing because I mean hitters.
Yeah, I don't want to giveTony Laruss any credit, but not
betting the pitcher ninth. Not thedumbest thing ever. He just thought there
(52:30):
was. There's some sound reasoning toit. I guarantee you there was.
It's it's the same philosophy here toa certain degree of why you would want
to do that. What kind ofyou think Altuve is gonna see fastballs if
Alvarez is on deck every time hebats. I mean, it's gonna help
Altuve. It's gonna have guys onbase, and the pitcher's gonna be in
(52:50):
trouble when Bregman comes up, whenTucker comes up. You're gonna ambush teams
in the first inning, maybe evenmore if it again the if, the
theory and then the what you're tryingto happen works. You don't know that
it will. And even Dusty wouldlike this lineup because it's righty lefty,
righty lefty. Yep, that's allyou got for that one. I mean,
he's not he's not here anymore.I know, I know, I'll
(53:14):
let it go. I'm still madabout Yeah, you'll thank me later for
what I just if he hadn't saidthat forty two career at bats for Albert
pool Holes in the two hole fortytwo seventy seven hundred as the three hole.
I was waiting for the other number, twenty eight hundred in the cleanup
spot. What happened on those fortysome odd days? They probably happened in
(53:36):
his first couple of years, maybesome spots start actually became a regular interested
to see when those actually were, because that is crazy. What did you
say? Seventy seven hundred, almostnine thousand played appearances batting third, forty
two batting second, and I stillcan't hate him as much as I should.
Nice, nice enough, fella,it's very notice what are you talking
(53:58):
about? He's one of the nicestguys. Ever. If you ever get
to meet alert Pooholes at like asigning show or something like that, I
can almost guarantee you I will bejustified in saying that I don't like the
home running hit. The Astro stillwon the series, although if he hadn't
hit it, then Roy would havegone in Game one and they probably win
the twenty two thousand and five WorldSeries. Seems like a reasonable theory.
(54:19):
Not Blummer, Sorry Blummer, buthe got that that was mentioned in the
TV booth by the owner Jim Crane. They were talking about team chemistry and
winning and you know what it's liketo win a World Series and you won
one Blum against us the White Socks, And what did Blum say? He
was nice. He didn't dive backon it and say you bet I did
or anything like this. Yeah,Clinton hates it. He did not say
(54:42):
that, and then Jim would havebeen like, who's Clinton? Probably not
all right? When we come back. It's our signature segment every single Monday,
the good, the bad, andthe ugly from over the weekend.
That is straight ahead, not beforewe tell you guys about joint pain.

fact that you might be in painin any of your joints, your knees,

procedure to get rid of that jointpain. Far from it. As a
matter of fact, just go aheadand check off surgery or downtime from the
surgery, or addictive pain medications rightoff the list, and instead on the

(56:13):
a Houston sports fan isn't easy, but hey, imagine living in Los Angeles
or New York and not understanding thedignity in class. Now that's gotta be
hard, really hard. Back toAdam Clinton had Adam Wexler on Sports Talk
seven ninety Now the Good, Ohgood, the bad, that's my good
(56:37):
and the ugly. Don't make megood with the eight we're selling you the
good the bad signature segment. Itis the good, the Bad and the
ugly from over the weekend. Wexis good, I'm very bad and Dan
(56:59):
is ugly? Whatx I will getit rolling here. I'll get it rolling
here with our good friend. Contributorto the station and contributor to KPRC Channel
two, Aaron Wilson made a regularappearance on their sports program last night.
(57:22):
It's on Sundays and it's about sports. What's it called. It's called Sports
Sunday. Okay. He was alea. He was part of a panel
discussion with Randy mcklvoy and Ari Alexandertalking about they're talking about the combine,
which I guess technically starts today becauseplayers arrived late yesterday and are going through
the initial parts of the combine. Most of what you think about when the
(57:45):
combine gets going is what we see, and the only thing we get to
see of any consequence is when theyget out on the field. It's a
five day stop for each position, group, and they don't get on the
field till day four, So nobody'sgonna be on the field for a couple
of days. So thinking about what'shappened at the combine, we'll hear from
Demiko Ryans tomorrow, we'll hear fromthe vest on Wednesday, and then players
will get on the field to getin positioned by position. Over the four
(58:07):
days that follow, they'll get achance to interview guys and whatnot. But
what took place on Sports Sunday,it was a discussion about number twenty six
for the New York Giants, SaquonBarkley. A lot of people have linked
him to a team not in NewYork or New Jersey, as in,
he's not going to be back.Adam Schefter reported today that he's like just
(58:29):
about every running back that goes intofree agency this offseason that's been good either
last year or in the past.None of them are expected to be hit
with the franchise tag. Doesn't meanit's a given because they have until March
fifth. The window doesn't close untilthen, but it doesn't look like the
Giants are interested in the second franchisetag on Saquon Barkley. Josh Jacobs,
Tony Pollard and others all seem tobe going down a similar we're not going
(58:51):
to get tagged spot. We alreadyknew that saquon social media had given us
the completely accurate and always on pointclues about his interest in becoming a Houston
Texan, and that he'd liked thispost, and when Paul Wall reached out,
he liked that one too. ButAaron went further than that, saying
he has communicated with c. J. Stroud about a desire to play football
(59:15):
for the Houston Texans, and youand I and Dan, most sane people
when covering the game recognize the obvious. You have a good team, you
have a great and young quarterback, and even in just a year's time,
you look like you have a stablelikely to win franchise for many years to
come. Those are appealing things tofree agents. Money is the most appealing
(59:38):
thing, but that's part of anysteps that it might be necessary to get
in front of Saquon Barkley. Iwould be in favor of it, even
if it's a non team friendly typeof contract, even if it puts you
in a bad spot if things don'twork out. It's kind of saying we
are here to win. And ifyou think he's the best running back on
(59:59):
the mark, he probably is,and probably I think he fits what you
like to do very well. Thenyeah, go ahead, get after it.
Have his wishes become truth. SaquonBarkley to the Texans. That's my
good. See. Now I wantto go in a different direction with that
topic, but we'll have to waituntil next second ninety more minutes after the
(01:00:22):
second. Yeah, I think weshould do that because I need to pick
on somebody from last night's Rockets game. And I could pick on a lot
of people, and I'm not gonnapick on the guy. You'll probably think
I'm about to pick on I mean, he gets picked on all the time.
So instead I will pick on Alperaand Shingoon who in last night's game,
and frankly, it was it wasmost of the night he put he
(01:00:45):
put in some uh well, I'lljust it was garbage time stats. Let's
put it that way. Once thegame was clearly out of hand and the
Rockets were, you know, scoringtwenty seven points in the fourth quarter,
he put up some you know, some some shots and kind of padded those
stats to make it look like adecent night at the office of nineteen points,
(01:01:06):
twelve rebounds and you know, acouple of assists to steal a block
shot, that kind of thing. But he had six turnovers. He was
getting I'm just gonna say it,he was getting bodied by sixty five pounds
chet homeguns. So you're saying itwrong. What am I supposed to see?
He was getting owned by him.He wasn't bullied by a broadstick,
is what I tweeted. But hewasn't. He wasn't. The performance was
(01:01:30):
dominant, but you're making it likeit was a physical dominations. Dunked on
him. What's the word that Ackermanowaysuses prodigiously. He did get one up
over the top and kind of pushedthrough him, dunked over him, like
you said, should never happen. But he missed no shots in the fourth
quarter. All seven of his shotswent in. Yeah, but they were
down by twelve. No, I'mtalking about check oh chet. Yeah,
(01:01:52):
he's the word. What? Butthey were you know why he may kept
needing to call timeouts and kept gettingmad at his players and his defense because
they were I'm imagining sometime in thescouting report they mentioned their best three point
shooter is seven to two. Yeah, but nobody seemed to care, and
most specifically alprint the three point looksthat he got. Some other member of
(01:02:12):
the Rockets was like, well,I bess I I got should close out,
I get her go just make itfor he got dominated by chet Chet.
I don't know if it'll happen.He I think he should win Rookie
of the yearly games and his performancesmatter. Here's why he's not though,
And look at what we say, because since you're bad as sheng goon,
like we're talking about all these things. This this is not a new last
(01:02:36):
night, no thing. He's beenplaying bad for a month. His his
numbers this month are not good. He's been playing poorly other than his three
point shooting, which is weird. But yeah, everything else is down.
His overall play is down, hisdefense is down. And that's what their
problem with him was last night, not to mention the six turnover. Here's
the thing too, this is whyI think they're an NBA purgatory, because
(01:02:59):
you have the conglomerate of Rockets fanbase, fandom, whatever you want to
call them. They were like, you need to build around this guy.
And I'm sitting here like no,I think you need to trade him while
the Just like with Jalen, Ithink you need to trade them while their
value is in an all time high. Jalen's keeps falling with each passing game.
(01:03:21):
At least Shngoon has showed flashes inyear three to where you could package
him and get something back. Becausethere's like four guys on this roster right
now that I'm good with like keepingfor the foreseeable future, and two of
them were signed this offseason in freeagency. The other two are a Men
Thompson and Cam Whitmore. Building aroundShan Gun is probably a very poor way
of saying it. Keeping Shangoon ona team you want to build into a
(01:03:44):
winner, I don't think is aproblem as long as he's like option three
on a championship contender, and rightnow, honestly, at the end of
games, close games, he's optionone, right they go to him specifically,
very clear, not option two,not on a championship. Yeah,
I think that if a men, let's just play it. Best case scenario,
if a Men Thompson and Cam Whitmorerise to the level of being Anthony
(01:04:08):
Edwards of the Timberwolves and I thoughtof this yesterday and it sounds weird,
but I do think a men hassome capabilities of being a likable, right
handed, healthy Ben Simmons. Oh, he can't shoot, but he can
affect every other aspect of the gamepositively. Yeah, but it's all bounding,
blocking shots. He's big. Benis in year fifty one can't shoot
(01:04:31):
and can't stay healthy, and amen is in game forty and can't shoot.
So I don't think it's a foregoneconclusion that that is permanent. I
like it clearly is with Ben Simmons. Here's the thing. Every time he
gets on the floor a lot likeCam Whitmore, although Whitmore is probably a
little less polished. But I don'tthey're They're the same to me. He
ran out of control a few times, both of them did last week.
Well one of those he got fouledon. They didn't call it. Those
(01:04:53):
officials suck. NBA officials in generalhave been brutal this year. Yeah,
like the way I would normally see, we're in bounds, no jump ball
at mid cork. Yah, thathappens way too. They had two calls
that one of them that the rocketswere like, well, we'd like the
ball, so I guess we haveto challenge. I know we're going to
keep it because we're going to winit. I mean, Jalen Green threw
the ball right off a thunder playand it rolled out of bounds, so
(01:05:13):
nobody went after it because everybody knewwho it went off of except for the
three people whose job it is.And one official was in a tough spot.
The other one of the other twoofficials definitely should have seen it.
And then there was a call latein the game the same thing kind of
happened, and we're kind of immediatelylooking at the rocket. Especially. You
have to challenge this. You haveto. It's just it's like in the
NFL when they say, well,at least they thinking challenges. You're making
(01:05:35):
the teams fix obvious calls, challenginga call that they might have missed or
could help you with a spot orI don't know if that happened. That's
one thing you shouldn't be using challengesbecause they've made such an obvious are you
just can't live with it because itimpacts your team. So we got got
a good and we got a bad. We get better officials. NBA they
(01:05:57):
one hat tip to the NBA,at least as opposed to say Major League
Baseball. If you're a consistent underperformer, especially if you're a younger official,
then you're done. They don't justkeep you forever. They don't keep advancing
you forever. They replaced. Ithought you were going to say they don't
get to do postseason games, whichis what THELB does. But there are
officials that I bet you you canrecall a handful of names for the past
(01:06:19):
several years that we've been doing gamesthat you never say anymore because they're not
there any Yeah, Jake O'Donnells.Oh wait, that was a older retired
group. Well he got retired afterthat run in with Clyde in nineteen ninety
five. I don't know if thatwas personal or not. What Let's do
an investigation. Let's figure this oneout. There's a spouse got involved,
I do at least she's the onethat wrote the letters to the league and
(01:06:41):
it worked. Apparently he didn't officiateanother game after that. Rockets league correspondence
over the years as if not,Jake, we're going to give you a
sizeable retirement package. You can justleave now. So she communicated with the
League. We know JVG communicated withthe league during the mevs. Series.
It's cost him one hundred grand. We know Darryl communicated with the league on
a daily basis. I believe he'sin a file at one point. Yeh
(01:07:04):
yeah. We don't like ref shows. We don't like other shows of sports
officiating or in this case umpiring.College baseball is where we go fifth inning
yesterday between Grand Canyon University, andI only bring this up because the video
has gone viral. Tyler Wilson,a senior for Grand Canyon University, hitting
a fifth inning game, tyme grandslam well. As he is approaching first
(01:07:28):
base, he's almost about to gofull patro Serrano. That's when he flips
the bat in the air. Roundsecond, round third. Probably when he
gets home the homeplate, umpire says, you're out of here, showing up
the other team. As the rulesdo state, if you throw it towards
an opponent or they're dugout, thenyou can get thrown out. But umpire
going full up show in this regardwhere he could have very easily just let
(01:07:51):
the game police itself. I'm surethat next time Tyler had come to the
plate probably would have been wearing afastball off the Wex does not like policing
yourselves the record. He just doesn'tlike it. He didn't throw it?
Why not? And we talk aboutmaking the game more fun. So how
did he police it? What didhe do? Well? He got thrown
out of the game. He wasdone. No but the but the players
(01:08:13):
didn't police the game right. Well, they didn't get a chance to because
he get a chance to get achance to do what put one in his
ear? That's what? Put whatin his ear? A baseball? How
hard is he gonna throw it?Ninety? Yeah, that's good. I
like that. Come on, umps, let the players do that. Dan.
We were once at a lunch witha baseball official, baseball higher up,
let's put it that way, whosaid, just let him polease their
(01:08:36):
own And I just could not stoplooking at Wex's face because I knew how
much he wanted to throw the tableover, but he couldn't. Like I
know, trusting the umpires to getit right is a really bad play,
especially in college, very much so. But I'm not sure you can trust
the players also in college, toproperly dance around that line of police seeing
(01:09:00):
themselves. Would you at least makean exception this upcoming Major League Baseball season
with a Doulas Garcia wearing one, because I'd like to see that. Don't
be throwing your bat down and mfing the other dugout and trotting around the
bases with a syringe hanging out ofyour backside. You don't need to see
that. I was watching highlights ofthe Nats Astros series. How about the
(01:09:24):
bath holding escapades. That's okay,no policing necessary. Just play a World
Series gameman to hit more holes. So the ugly was the UMP Show?
Yeah? The UMP Show very much. It's always ugly, and it's in
college all over the place. Imean these guys, seriously, it's like
you're not going to get noticed. You're going to be umpiring in college.
(01:09:45):
That's the best you're going to do. Just do the job, man,
nobody's there to see you. Whatwas your good again the UMP Show?
No it wasn't. Oh it wasAlbera and Shinga. No, that was
me. It was Barkley. Therewe go. I need to you go
down that avenue this next segment. All right, hopefully the old line will
open up a hole for you.Looking forward to their blocking when we come
(01:10:05):
back. If you can buy Astro'sgear on it, you can hear us
on it, listen live for freeon any smart device. It is the
A team here on Sports Talk sevenninety. So I'm gonna I'm gonna combine
something that WEX hates and something withWEX something that WEX doesn't. I guess
(01:10:28):
mine, he doesn't love it.So let's see. The first thing is
first thing is James Taylor, andthe second thing is Billy Joel. I
thought you liked. I can't findanybody that's just okay man. His new
song is so good. I allright, So what do I What do
you got for us? So?Uh? You like when you hitting?
(01:10:50):
When I say you like, Imean, this is the part you hate
when people just kind of like aretalking about these people obviously are just talking
about free age coming to the Texans. For example, this time of year,
you know, Combine's about to getunderway. Free agency is about to
get underway. Franchise tags or evenare either about to be given out or
it's been designated that they will notbe given out. In the case of
(01:11:12):
Barkley, like we talked about acouple of segments ago or last segment I
should say, And then inevitably youhave people that just kind of all,
right, well, I'm just gonnaput these marquee free agents in different markets
because I need to fill five thousandwords and one player all thirty two teams
and blah blah blah. Where yougo. I gotcha. Who do you
think is in this particular article likethat? So what's the what's the phrase
(01:11:36):
that they're going with? Twenty twentyfour NFL Free Agency predictions? So they
predict who does this entity predict willbe agency? Colin Kirk Cousins, your
favorite quarterback, Josh Jacobs, andMike Evans each sign with new teams.
And the sub headline is NFL freeagency is just around the corner. So
(01:11:58):
da da da da da. I'mnot going to say their name is offering
up one predicted acquisition for every teamin the league. I get it.
That's very much like everybody has todo five versions of their mock draft.
They're correct, angry, unnecessary exercises. But I totally get it, and
that's what this is. But whois the new text? And it's obviously
not sau No, Okay, Idon't honestly, I don't think Mike Evans,
(01:12:19):
even though they said he's got anew team. I don't think it's
Mike Evans. You're doing good sofar, you're two for two. I
mean, we did kind of hearthe expected news that Xavion Howard will be
available, not him, and theTexans have an opening at corner. They
Stephen Nelson is a free agent also, and Xavion Howard is better than he
is or has proven he's played betterfootball than he has in his other home
(01:12:44):
in Miami. Offense or defense defense, defense, So I think big,
it's the biggest fish out there, the biggest defensive fish out there. Tell
people who it is. We justhelped the Chiefs win some jewelry again,
so I kind of figured that thatwas where they were going. But that
lines up with the what I saidto end last segment. They're in win
(01:13:05):
now mode whatever you think. Theythink that, and they should. You're
building, you're taking chances, howeveryou want to term it. They should
be trying to win a super Bowlwith their twenty twenty four roster and twenty
five to sixty seven, et cetera. But I mean immediate. It's also
additioned by subtraction if you're trying toget where the Chiefs are very Garrett Cole
like, Yes, taking a goodplayer off the teams, it's in your
(01:13:27):
way. Also, you'll love thisthe first sentence. Jones will hit unrestricted
free agency after posting twenty six sacksover the past two seasons, because sacks
are the be all, end all. Now, Chris Jones is an elite
disruptor. He's he's hard to block, he's almost impossible to block with one
He's stupidly left unblocked on what turnedout to be the niners last offensive play
(01:13:50):
of the season. And he's notWillerson now and Grenard is still involved.
Well, hopefully they again keep himhowever you need to. But by March
fifth, I actually do expect theywill franchise Tag Grenard. You mentioned the
franchise Tag, so I just wantto mention that the Bengals did officially franchise
Tag T Higgins their wide receiver. There's other ways to go get him,
(01:14:13):
but no, I don't think theTexas would be involved in doing that.
Only concerned with Chris Jones. Iguess basically is, you know, what
amount of seasons do you feel likeyou're getting out of this contract if you're
signing are so if you're signing toa four year deal expecting to get good
three, maybe you find a wayout of the deal in year four when
the guarantees a runout or it's notso unbelievably cost prohibitive you can maneuver your
(01:14:38):
way around it. He is athirty year old defensive tackle, not huge,
but he doesn't need to be theway he plays. He plays through
strength and quickness. He's he doesn'tstrike you you look at him, I
wouldn't think he's six six three hfive three ten, but he is.
And yeah, of available interior defensivelineman. I don't even know who the
(01:14:59):
next guy is and how impactful youthink that player would be. This is
that's shooting for the moon. Sowhen you are going to put pen to
paper for CJ on that astronomical deal, that's when Jones's deal will either be
up or he's going into the final, you know, year of it.
You kind of have to weigh itagainst what they did last year. What
they did last year was really reallysmart and unfortunately only got to see half
(01:15:23):
of it play out. You obviouslyhad Malie Collins under contract. You went
out and signed two interior defensive linemen, Assund Bridgeway and Sheldon Rankins, and
in Rankins case, a nearly ninemillion dollar contract for one year. It
obviously worked. I mean to me, it did. He was very very
good. Ridgeway got hurt and basicallydidn't contribute last year. You can spend
(01:15:45):
way less on a plan like thatwith no future implications, or you can
go after a player like Chris Jones. I tend to lean on the way
they went about it last year.Let me ask you this then, because
that makes perfect sense obviously, andyou're Nick Cassario. You can do whatever
you want. Do you give ifyou're gonna give big money to one of
them? Are you saying you wouldrather give it to Barkley? I think
(01:16:10):
going yeah, I'm yes, becauseI think the dynamic changes more adding him
to the team overall. Because takeit the same way and we brought it
up last week. Okay, let'snot sign Barkley, Let's bring back Devin
Singletary and for a little bit lessmoney, signed DeAndre Swift or signed DeAndre
Swift and other other running back thatyou feel like is better than what you
(01:16:32):
have, So instead of spending evenmore on one guy. You're spending slightly
less and you're getting two players thatcan get you the requisite you know,
forty some odd sixty some odd snapsper game with better production that you've gotten
twenty twenty three. I think maybethe drop off. I mean, it's
probably comparable Barkley to the next guy, unless you're a big, swift guy.
(01:16:55):
And I think they can win witha different defensive line makeup. But
what's wrong with having a dominant frontfour? All right? What's wrong with
having Jones, Anderson, Grenard andCollins on the field in a must stop
the other team drive at the endof the game. If you do subscribe
to the theory that the game iswon in the trenches, then the move
(01:17:17):
to make would be Jones out ofthose two. Well, when Barkley after
he gets the handoff, isn't hein the trenches? Yeah? And he's
slamming into a less than stellar offensiveline blocking for the run. Yeah,
I'm not in. And again I'mnot even like gung Ho. This is
a certainly going to work if yousigned Barkley, but I'd be all for
watching his play out. I mean, I'm just thinking of Jones next to
(01:17:41):
Anderson next to Grenard. So whymy question to ask, and maybe we
extend it next sec. Why havethe Chiefs been unwilling to do this?
They've had him for eight years becausethey got to pay Pat Mahomes. I
mean they've let a lot of guyswalk Tyreek Hill at the top of that
list, I mean they sent himaway. Harry Astros like Lugerious Sneed is
(01:18:01):
potentially in that spot. Yeah,it's just an interesting thought. And this
was not an out of nowhere yearby any means. This is a good
Basically, he and Mahomes have beenawesome over the exact same amount of years.
Yes, he wasn't going at thebeginning of his career, but the
last six years have been elite.Yeah. I remember going to Kansas City
(01:18:23):
several years ago in the middle ofthis run that they're on. Much like
the Astros, It's like, manJones is awesome for you, guys.
Leader in the NFL Clubhouse for mostboring superstar name is it? Only more
boring would be if it were eitherJim or Bob Bob Smith the new player.
Yea shore up the middle of theD line. Nope, we got
Chris Jones. We're good. Imean, I'll take it. I don't
(01:18:45):
care what his name is. Ijust wanted to kill the other quarterback.
Which of which do you think isa better follow based on his name only
his Twitter follow or his Instagram follow. I'm gonna go with Instagram. They're
usually more creative. Well, youwould be wrong at the real Chris Jones
lame Twitter at stone cold Jones.Do you believe you missed that one?
(01:19:09):
Now we have to sign him herein Houston so that I can bring those
two together. I think I canmake it happen. All right, we'll
wrap up the four o'clock hour comingup next. Uh. By the way,
there's not uh that he's not theonly big name in the NFL.
Let's put it that way. Whocould be on the move? And man,
the reasons why this guy could beleaving, we'll tell you when we
(01:19:31):
come back. Adam and Adam areso Houston. And even though they don't
smoke, they still have twenty fivelighters on their dresser a bit, Mike,
Yes, sir, they've got toget paid. So back to it,
guys, how cringe is Russell Wilsonright now? He is serious?
(01:19:57):
You guys love talking about the NFL. Right, that's right. You love
the NFL season, you have theNFL personalities. He love the NFL for
the games and obviously with all theproliferations, celebrities, singer spouses. There
are podcasts, there are players tribunearticles, there's social media, there's a
never any supply of Man, thisguy cannot stop topping himself with cringe Like,
(01:20:20):
how many years running is he atthe top of the list of most
cringe worthy NFL players? Why doeshe say it like that? He's awesome,
He's the best and he did notdisappoint When he sat down with Brandon
Marshall the im Athlete pod. Hehe was talking about his future, talking
(01:20:45):
about the Broncos, talking about hisdesire to do what he's already done,
but maybe more winning, and maybemore than just winning, but finding a
home and just doing what he lovesto do. So I'm gonna have some
fun with this. Hope you guysdon't mind Russell Wilson talking about wanting to
win and where he's at and wherehe hopes to be with the Brandon Marshall
I Am Athlete podcast, I gotmore fire than ever, honestly, especially
(01:21:09):
over the past two years of whatI've gone through. Whether it's in Denver
or somewhere else, I hope it'sin Denver, you know. I hope
I get to finish there. Icommitted there. I wanted to be there,
you know, I want to bethere. For me, it's about
winning. Over the next five years. I want to win too. I
want to fill the chill that trophyagain. You know, I love the
city and everything else, but youknow, you also want to be a
place that wants you too. Sothe thing that I want to do is
(01:21:30):
a win, man, That's all. That's all I care about. He
wants to be where somebody wants himto though. Okay, that's where the
problem sets in. I'm amazed atthis. You know, what was that
mystery illusion we had a few yearsago? What color is the dress blue?
Or what? Oh? Yeah,so I'm having that happen with Russell
right now. I don't know ifyou picked up on that, but he
(01:21:51):
said he wants to win, youknow, two more in the next five
years. And he said something aboutthe trophy and I listened to it like
fifty times before the show chill,So you thought he said, chill.
Uh uh, that's not what Iheard the first time, it sounded very
different than that. I want tofeel the chill that trophy again. And
now I'm convinced he definitely said chill. What did you think it was?
(01:22:14):
Originally I thought he was trying tosay thrill and said trill. I want
to feel the chill that trophy again. Boy, he said it fast,
even for bun Bee's standards. Iwant to feel the chill that trophy again.
It just made no sense. DoesBernard know that he's ripping his copyrighted
Hamburger so you can see what Iheard, right, It's close enough.
Yeah, And I never heard chilluntil just now. You know why you
(01:22:38):
didn't hear that? And I watchedhim say it right because it's the video.
No one would ever describe feeling theLombardi Trophy with the word chill.
Did they have it on ice?No, it's political means like the chills.
Maybe, yeah, the chill ofthe victory. I guess that's thrill.
I thought it's what I thought feelingthe thrill of the trophy was all
(01:23:01):
about. How did this guy everget Sierra? That's why I can't get
back to every time all of thisstuff comes about I go back and I
watched the Goodies video and I'm like, how did he like? It's probably
how people think about me all thetime. How did you? How did
you land that hot chick that you'remarried to? I don't know, but
(01:23:23):
I do know this. I mean, you might never gotten in front of
reporters and said that's right, likeyou're not. You might not be everyone's
idea for greatness or excellence or beauty, or you got the best catch out
there, but you're not cringe.No, I think I don't think I
am, I mean, not likehim anyway. You might think I'm cringe.
I'm never going to be Russell Wilsoncringe my worst day, I'm never
(01:23:45):
gonna be Let's right, cringe. What do you think it would sound like
because you mentioned Goodies? What doyou think it would sound like if she
brought him to the recording studio andjust had him recite the lyrics to that
song. Well, I'm gonna needto have a refresher and it's probably gonna
need to be heavily censored. Well, it talks about the truth and the
(01:24:08):
sick reputation. Obviously, Goodies, basket of Fruit, things like that.
Well, What's funny is that theyfin Howard Russell sound not. He doesn't
have to sing it. It doesn'thave to harmonize it religious though, right,
Just what would it sound like ifhe did a did a dramatic reading
of Goodies lyrics? I would haveto the lyrics just because you drive a
(01:24:30):
bens Yeah, you know everybody elsesick reputation for handling broads? Would he
be done? Right? Then heput he put it down and say I
can't do this. I've got astellar reputation for squiring about young ladies.
How's that bought a boom? Boughta bam but bam. Yes, I'm
bad, I got it and it'sa rap. Tell Valet is a rat
(01:24:55):
to bring my lack and I ain'tcoming back. His next pass is gonna
be thrown in what uniform? Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh. I like Tomlin and Russell.
I like the marriage of Tomlin andRussell Wilson because as much as he's
just cringe and annoying and a dork, Tomlin and him, well he is.
(01:25:19):
I mean, come on, there'sa that's right, Like Tomlin needs
a guy who is no nonsense, but also like you know, still has
some talent left problem. That's theproblem his quarterback. Well yeah, but
so is like that plunger over there. But you know, like he's not
(01:25:42):
he's not washed yet. And inthat offense with that team, it's very
stable and definitely you know who's incharge. He's not gonna be walking in
there having a power struggle with SeanPayton. He's not gonna walk in there
demanding corner offices and whatever else hewanted. And if he gets up in
front of a podium, if hegets up in front of a podium and
(01:26:03):
says that's right or some stupid Pittsburghkeep in mind this was for social beauty.
It wasn't like he gave the speechand then ended his team meeting.
Tom did this pregame hype on thefield. He said, all right,
guys, hands in Tomlin will backhandhim. Don't do that again. You're
embarrassing me and you're embarrassing your family. I can just totally see him doing
(01:26:25):
that. So Russell Wilson to Pittsburgh. So Justin Field's not going to Steelers
fans, you wouldn't hate it much. I mean, the reality is they
could win. Justin Field is gonnago to Atlanta anyway. So just I'm
definitely feeling that, Yeah, thatpipe dream is over for you Steelers fans.
Sorry atx Hobo Girl Jaz, you'regonna get Russell, the Russell Wilson
(01:26:47):
experience. Well, it's still betterthan Mason Maya Rudolph. That's basically who
he is. Hey, I saidit, Wow, you might as well
have Maya Rudolph back there. Samething I sold school reference. I appreciate
that. Let me tell you aboutUVC Power Sports Tractors and Outdoors real quick,

(01:28:26):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named AdamTalking Your Teams series Adam Clinton and Adam
Wexler are the A team. Aay, are you right? If Brussel
footballs it's five o'clock some five o'clockfootball professionals. Footballs in America is a
(01:28:56):
special game football. At five,we have a conversation as per usual this
time of day. Well, we'vetalked a little bit about well, we
talked a lot about Russell Wilson.Last segment. We won't talk about that
this segment. But we talked alittle bit about whether or not you want
Chris Jones or Saquon Barkley in aTexans uniform, and FYI, there are
(01:29:20):
other options. Yeah, but thoseare the Okay, we know that,
Like so, Josh Jacobs, SaquonBarkley, they're not gonna get franchise tags.
Chris Jones probably not gonna get one. We don't even know for sure
on him though, do we notone hundred percent. I do not believe
there was a qualifier in that dealhe signed that does not allow for it.
(01:29:45):
They're a handful of players who getto that stage and when they finally
come to it, well, we'llgive you a one year deal. And
then the player and his agent say, well, if you do that,
then you cannot use the tag onme or something like that. And t
Higgins gets the franchise tag today fromthe Bengals. So that's all well and
good. That's franchise tag talk. That's fine, that's fine. Let's get
to the good stuff. I wantBill's Jets hate smack talk. That's what
(01:30:10):
I want to talk about here.So you're familiar with Dion Dawkins's work for
the Bills, he plays in thetrenches. Huh and are you aware of
the resume of one Michael Clemens forthe Jets. Okay, so, Dawkins,
you could one could say he lashedout against the Jets and specifically Clemens,
(01:30:32):
in an interview that dropped last week. He called him a Now should
I do this like the Matt Thomasshow. I would prefer if you could
figure out a different way to doit. So I don't You don't want
me to rhyme it? Correct? It rhymes with mitch. Okay, See,
I didn't do what you thought Iwas going to say, which is
used the word which Clemens is amitch boy, excuse me, and accused
(01:30:59):
of accused him of instigating their postgame scuffle in the tunnel at high Mark
Stadium back on November nineteen. Iimagine some of you remember it. But
they both teams exiting and through thesame tunnel. Yeah, one locker room
is in advance of the other,so one team just walks a little further
to theirs. But they're walking throughthe same area after they've just you know,
especially these particular players. Thirty twoto six was the final by the
(01:31:23):
way Dean Dawkins plays offensive line.Yeah, Michael Clemens will plays defensively,
so they've been pushing each other aroundfor sixty minutes of actual on the clock
time. But here's the thing. You know, guys will sometimes make comments
about the other team, sometimes makecomments about the other team's players. And
this happens in every league, it'snot just the NFL. Rarely, though,
(01:31:45):
do you get a paragraph like this. First he started off by saying
weirdos being weird. Then he getsreally descriptive. I hate them. This
is Dawkins talking about the Jets.I hate them, all of them.
Bro. When it comes to sports, there are people that play the sport
because they love the sport, andthen there's people that play the sport just
(01:32:06):
to try to be cool. Ifeel like they play the sport to try
to be cool. Those are abunch of dudes that just want to take
pictures on Instagram. That's whack. So he basically is saying the entire Jets
roster are ig models. That's whathe's saying that they he goes, Quinn
(01:32:28):
Williams is valid. Quentinn Williams bethe guy that can cuss at CJ.
Stroud. For those of you outthere who might need a refresher. He
said, I like him. Therest of them don't care, don't like
them. It's just I mean,I hear guys say, oh, we
don't like them all the time.Who is the guy that was, uh,
Taylor Lawan that was on the fieldin Tennessee that was like, we
(01:32:49):
hate them? Or was it theEagles talking about them? You know what
I'm talking about. Somebody was runningoff the field saying, bleep them,
we hate this team. Probably notTaylor, only in the fact that he
was just hurt or not a memberof the team this year. The years
could have been and I knew peoplewould do it. So what did Deon
Dawkins talked about them wanting to basicallybe you know, influencers IG guys.
(01:33:11):
So someone and I'm trying to verifythe information IG influencer in quotes Michael Clemens,
the person on the Jets. He'sreferencing no IG account at all,
but he just tries to be cool. Deon Dawkins, the author of These
Barbs and Words three hundred and seventyseven IG posts, five current posts on
a story right now, and Idon't know if if one measures out,
(01:33:34):
but it's any selfies. I'm surethere are. I'm sure there are.
I have not gone through at all. Okay, but I've listened to him
say all these things you're saying. It's funny, especially since he's sitting there
during this podcast with his shirt off. I mean, that's what I'm saying.
I'm fine with trash talking. I'veI love when guys go out of
(01:33:57):
their way they say they hate it, like remember it. Look, we're
in a city where Andre Johnson justgot elected to the Hall of Fame and
one of his top five greatest momentsis beating the crap out of a no
name cornerback for the Titans one daybecause you got tired of him putting up
with his bs that. I'm finewith all of this, but like you
just pointed out, if you're goingto accuse the other team of that exact
(01:34:19):
thing, you might not want todo it. When the guy you're you're
picking on doesn't have an IG accountyou do, and you're sitting there shirtless
on a podcast saying it, we'reprobably taking it a little bit too far
with all that total nonsense. Whathe's saying is also total nonsense. But
this means there's a rivalry. Yeah, and the Jets should have been good
(01:34:42):
this year, right, and probablythat the Dolphins, the Bills, basically
everybody but the Patriots, right, the Dolphins, the Bills, and the
uh oh my gosh, Jets,Bills, Jets, We're supposed to be
good and they would have been.I think Rogers. There's no reason next
year should be much different, andif it starts badly, they'll probably fire
(01:35:03):
Robert Sala. This shouldn't go intothe game beyond I'm gonna beat this guy
as a football player. I don'tknow if Michael Clemens will feel a little
differently being called a Mitch boy,but I suppose he could, and I
would be very understanding if he did. Here's the thing, though, but
(01:35:27):
again they did have a literal, verbal, somewhat physical meetup after the game.
Based on the two organizations prior seasons, starting with last year and going
further back to several seasons, Iwould have thought this would be coming from
a Jets player, I e.You guys haven't wont anything, You're not
doing anything, So you have toreplace that with this, like why is
(01:35:49):
a Bills player even like listen tothis? First of all, why are
you talking to my quarterback, becauseapparently he said Clemens was trash talking Josh
Allen during a time out in thefourth quarter. Why are you talking to
my quarterback. Don't talk to myquarterback. Stay over there. Don't say
nothing to none of my guys.Just stay over there. Son, Son
is my favorite. Don't talk toseventeen. I'm really serious about that.
(01:36:11):
Don't talk to him. Don't saynothing to him at all. Right,
are you kidding me? Do youknow what it's like to play in an
NFL game? I mean I don't, and I know this. There's talking
all game long. He's supposed tojust play and then go back over to
the huddle and then do it againlike several more times. Come on,
And I mean, I get tryingto take up for your quarterback, but
(01:36:31):
you seriously don't think anybody is supposedto say anything to him at all.
Happens every game in every stadium, every year, and usually the ways people
are shut up is scoreboard or dominationindividually, and in this case, the
Bills did that. So why ishe chirping about a thirty two to six
final where somebody supposedly said something toJosh Allen and then took Instagram photos that
(01:36:57):
he doesn't have an account for.Well, hopefully this will elevate their team's
presence and then networks will recognize.I mean, the good thing about the
NFL is when odds are will beable to see it, even if you're
not a Sunday ticket subscriber. You'vegot so many options. We'll make it
a Thursday night game, We'll makeit a Sunday night game, We'll make
it a Monday night game. We'llput it during one of the weeks of
the season where they play Saturday games. We'll do it all tonight where they
(01:37:19):
have two Monday night games. They'llrecognize this, hopefully and try to get
it in front of our eyes.Dion Dawkins been in the league for quite
a few years. Clemens will beentering year number three next year. I
hope the Jets are good so thatthis actually means something. Well, that
part of the Jets was good, and hopefully their team will be next year.
(01:37:39):
Their d line was very, verygood, and he was part of
it. I feel like they playthe sport to try to be cool.
I feel like they play it fora lot of money. That's what I
feel like they play it for.I don't know if you are going to
run up on somebody, run allthe way up on somebody. And this
guy is just full of it.But it is true if you were if
he's rolling around Jersey or New Yorkwherever he is, and they're like,
(01:38:02):
hey man, that it's pretty cool. What does he do? Oh?
He say he works over at MerrillLynch. What does that guy do?
He plays for the Jets. Oh, that dude's so cool. I bet
his selfies are way better on hisnon Instagram account. That's just it's just
crazy, and it's ticking on thethe whether they that they want to be
popular and I like he said somenot they aren't even really bad words,
(01:38:27):
but they're like the worst son.Yes, don't sun anybody unless you're gonna
back it up. Now, he'ssix five three twenty so saying all these
things you said, and this isa battle, not a physical battle off
the field. And we're not goingto put Cam Newton at football at five
at all. No, we're savinghim for in case you missed it,
because it could be the whole segment. This guy is. He still can
(01:38:51):
handle his business, no doubt, very very large individual and prove that much
over the weekend. All right. You don't have to be a lot arch
individual. You don't even have tobe able to handle your own business to
know that when it comes to anysort of plumbing job, big or small,
aqueduct plumbing company is where it's at. They are Southeast Texas whole water
(01:39:12):
repiping and under the foundation drain experts. That's a fancy way of saying they
know what they're doing. Especially whenit comes to something like the pipes in
your home. You don't want tomess around with that, especially when the
cold weather comes. We're getting intothe part of the year where you don't
have to worry about cold weather forlike a gajillion months. But what's gonna
happen is you're gonna think it's allgood because it's like one hundred and six
(01:39:33):
degrees for like nine months in arow, and you'd be like, I
don't have to worry about my pipes. I don't need to call Aqueduct Plumbing
Company at two eight one four eighteight sixty two thirty eight and have them
repipe my home while the weather ishot. And then the temperature is gonna
drop next February and your pipes aregonna burst and your sheet rock's gonna be
ruined and you're gonna be like man, I should have listened to Klanton.
(01:39:53):
That's why you call them now andget them out to your home for a
free estimate. By the way,Aqueduct Plumbing Company will come out up there,
assess the situation and tell you whatyou do or don't need when it
comes to repiping your home. Attwo eight one four eight eight sixty two
thirty eight. That phone number againtwo eight one four eight eight sixty two
thirty eight for Aqueduct Plumbing Company providingthe full range of plumbing services, including
(01:40:17):
a free estimate to repipe your home. Two eight one four eight eight sixty
two thirty eight. The third CoastCoast the only time where being third is
actually right where we want to betheir host. Back to our home grown
Adams the eighty find Sports Talk sevenninety Undoubtedly on a Monday back from the
(01:40:45):
weekend. There's a few items we'venot had a chance to get into.
So much going on, that's whywe love sports talk radio. Wexay c
Dan Matthews. In case you missedit, what's first today? All right,
so we've got some details on theother viral video from the weekend that
of course Cam Newton getting into aseven on seven altercation with three other guys.
Wait wait, wait, wait wait, so there were seven people fighting
(01:41:08):
seven other people. Well, no, it was seven on seven like as
in like the football tournament. Yes, yes, so this is the time
of the year when seven on seventournaments are happening and high school football hotbeds
like here in Georgia and other stateslike that. That's what's going on.
So TJ and Steph Brown apparently usedto work with Cam Newton as part of
(01:41:30):
his seven on seven teams, andthey had played in a tournament over the
weekend. On Sunday, apparently,Newton pulled up to the tournament, got
out of his car and started yelling, what are we betting? I've got
plenty of money. I ain't neverrunning out of money. That's when he
told him, that's your problem. All you care about his money. You
think about money is everything you can'tbuy me and I walk off, That's
(01:41:51):
what TJ said. Well, thenapparently Cam was chirping at their players while
warming up for the next and that'swhen the confrontation started. Punches were thrown
and we start seeing Cam Newton throwingpeople like their little kids. I mean,
is it like, is it anadvert to say he was jumped?
(01:42:14):
Well, I mean yes, Ibelieve that that's the confrontation. It's just
hard to say like somebody threw apunch. Yeah, it seems more like
whatever was said created an intense enoughsituation that they just decide, all I
will just start a fight. AndI don't think he physically started the fight.
I think he I wouldn't say heended. It's not like he knocked
a bunch of people out, butthere was no He basically stood his ground
(01:42:35):
and as others came in, theywere pushing the other smaller people away from
him, and he was standing therelike is this it? Are we done?
Now? He's such a like mountainnext to them too. I will
do you guys one better during thebreak, I will tweet it out.
There is a photo of me whenI worked in Atlanta I took with Cam
Newton, and it just shows youhow large of a man he is.
(01:42:56):
Because I think we can agree.I'm not a small person. I mean,
I'm probably a little bit or rowTon than I was back then,
but still I compared to him,I look very small. There's two people
that have made me look small. He's one of them. Jack was the
other. It's obvious that was whatwe hit on first. I think many
people in our world would. Shouldwe not also at least acknowledge, like
(01:43:20):
the element of youth sports that thistakes a part in And it's not little
kids or whatever it's or you know, teenagers likely to be athletes in the
future in college, et cetera.Whatever, it doesn't even matter, Like
why there This happens too often atevents, whether it's a celebrity or we
didn't even talk about the Matt Barnesincident. Matt Barnes, who's the only
(01:43:45):
former NBA player that Matt Barnes shouldprobably never want to bear out Fisher.
So Derek Fisher is the coach ofhis son. Imagine why so Derek Fisher
is the coach of his son's team. That's where the story starts. Well,
and Derek Fisher had nothing to dowith this. This was an incident
where he just didn't like the waythe game was being officiated. A technical
fouls called on his son, andhe just started yelling and he was walking
(01:44:08):
on He's a fan, he's aparent of a child, he walked onto
the court and was delaying the gamebecause he was being demonstratively loud and causing
his stir and all that, andthe student announcer that's calling the game for
their stream of the school was basicallychallenged by Barnes put his hand on his
shoulder and said, don't you besaying this right? You know, I
(01:44:30):
don't don't do that, and hethreatened him with a you know, I'll
knock your teeth in or something alongthose lines. Which all this happened,
and there's no disputing some of thosefacts of it. All. You know,
maybe what was said and who saidwhat first there certainly could be well,
the Sacramento King said all right,we don't need you anymore. He'd
been a part of their pre andpost game TV show. Gerald Green did
this right now, except of coursethat would never happen that Gerald Green's not
(01:44:56):
a douche. He's the opposite ofit. He's a nice guy. And
Matt Barnes always been this guy,and Matt Derek Fisher, by the way,
Matt Barnes happens to be, youknow, a celebrity parent, and
obviously Cam Newton being around these kidsas a celebrity as it shouldn't. It
makes no difference parents of kids playingkids' games. It's you just gotta pipe
(01:45:16):
down at some point, and youcertainly can't be challenging officials and challenging other
coaches and all that stuff. Maybewe just see it more because of social
media. Yeah, oh god,it's everywhere. And by the way,
just so we're clear, that's howbad Derek Fisher is. He made Matt
Barnes the sympathetic figure in their littlething. The villain wasn't really Matt.
(01:45:40):
Just I mean I always did.I alway tell you about the time you
remember Jay Fizzle, right, JeremyFoster. Of course, one time the
Rockets were gonna play the Jazz andit wasn't the playoff series, but it
was back when memet Okur and AKforty seven and Matt I like to break
photographers, harpring Wood, photographers Beckshout Out, Alan Reid, all those
(01:46:04):
guys that just a you know,a typical unlikable jazz squad. And Derek
Fisher was on that team. SoJeremy goes, hey, you want to
go to pregame Chappa with me?I said, all right, I'll go
in there because players are part ofthis, but you can go in there
too. So we go to thislittle room off of one of the tunnels
(01:46:24):
in Toyota Center and we sit downand I mean, we're not in our
seats. Thirty seconds and Derek Fisherwalks in. And I turned to Jeremy
and I said, I can't dothis, man, I can't sit in
the room with him. Like, and I'm saying it very quietly. I'm
like, what is he doing here? No, he's a really spiritual guy.
I'm like, no, he's not. I've seen him on the court.
(01:46:45):
It's a bad dude. I don'tknow he's Jeremy. Come on,
man, it's Derek Fisher. Andthat was when he was with the Jazz.
He came back to the Lakers andwound up, you know, the
whole Louis skullt thing, all thatstuff. Bad dude, very very bad
dude. And now he's parent, living with Matt Barnes's ex wife and coaching
their sons. What else do wehave today? Much happier? Soff like
(01:47:06):
we've made it all this way withoutmentioning that U of H is the number
one men's college basketball team in thecountry. Who's house According to the ap
kuk Kooz House going back to lastweek, this was inevitable if they took
care of their business. Yukon losingthe Koog's welcoming Iowa State, the second
best team in the conference to FortiitaCenter, handling them and knowing that Baylor
(01:47:30):
was in front of them at theirbrand new Foster Pavilion this Saturday, and
then they handled them as well, even though it did take over time hugely
in the first half. And thenBaylor played an awesome second half, though
they missed a late free throw whichcould have given the lead with under five
ticks, can we talk about something? So they are the new overwhelming number
one. Fifty four of the votersof the sixty two said Koog's best team
(01:47:50):
in the country as of today.I turned that game on and I think
there was about five forty five leftin regulation, so most of it had
been decided, but really it hadn'tbecause it was going to overtime. Just
like you said, yeah, ifyou turned it on, then you thought,
man, this has been an awesomegame, and in reality had Cougs
dominated the first half and Baylor immediatelygot back in the game when the second
half begins, and I'm just like, okay, but this this is good
(01:48:12):
character building, you know, notthat they need it, but this is
this is a Coog's team that findsa way to win. That's a description
you kept hearing afterward. Can westop building brand new venues like in Arlington
where the camera is on the roofof the facility for the shot. I
felt like I was in the rafterslooking straight down directly at the court for
(01:48:34):
the camera angle. On that gameyou mentioned it's a brand it looks like
it's a beautiful facility. Eighth gamein the building, I mean, where
do they put these cameras? Ifeel like they're on the halo. So
early in the day I had seensomebody who was there, a KOUG fan
had posted a picture. This iswhere the cameras will be, kind of
alerting me. Anybody else well,I at uh, let's see eleven eleven
(01:48:56):
am. So the game was aboutsix minutes old, I tweeted, I
imagine Foster Pavilion is a great newbuilding, but the spot they carved out
for TV cameras is not good.I was being as nice as possible.
There is at one point during thegame because it has those those tall windows
and you know the spot in minutemade where you can sit and you're basically
right next to the roof of theUnion station next door. It's that section
(01:49:17):
that kind of jets out right likeyou know, just ya north of the
foul pole. It looks like they'vegot seats like that. It's a very
steep building. It's like sit atthe top of Toyota and it is small,
like for Tida Center. As collegebasketball on campus arenas go, it's
not large. It creates an unrealatmosphere. Their atmosphere is very good lower
(01:49:38):
that roof. Their team is verygood. They're just not quite as good
as the Cougars, which is somethingyou could say about every team in the
country right now, all of them, all of them. Big game at
the end of the season still looms, but the Cougars are an unbelievable position
to win the conference. Also inthat if they if they gain a game
on Kansas or a better set,if Kansas loses a game on the Cougars
(01:50:00):
between now and then, that gamewon't even mean anything. They will already
have won the conference regular season titlein year one of what was previously the
best conference in basketball, which theynow potentially own making it even better than
it was before. Where's the finalfour this year? Phoenix? Okay,
the coup's likely. I wouldn't saythey've sewn up a number one seed yet,
but they're very close and if theydo, odds are reasonably good they're
(01:50:25):
going to get in their pod whereverthat might be and then go through regionals
in Dallas. Ooh, road trip. I was with them a couple times.
A couple of seasons. We goto Kansas City. There, I've
been well. I went to KansasCity with the Deuce a couple of years
back, yep, and he mademe announce that we had a brand new
show here while I was out therein the middle of Kansas City live trying
(01:50:47):
to take to put some live shotstogether. It's like, hey, dude,
could you like put your other careeron hold? We have a show
to announced here. But they wentto the final four in India a couple
of years ago when they played andlost to Baylor. Well, the last
time a team was this good inconference play this late in the season.
It was Baylor on their way tothat championship and everything that people have said
(01:51:08):
that we probably should have as well. By Now, I know there's a
lot of good players in college basketball, but in terms of an MVP,
there's definitely no doubt Jamal Shed shouldbe the MVP of college basketball. It's
the best player award, and maybesome people would vote otherwise because of that.
There's no player that means more totheir basketball team anywhere in the country
than him, and honestly, I'veseen them all play. The kid at
(01:51:30):
Tennessee is probably close because I thinkTennessee stinks except for their leading scorer,
so I would credit him for beingan MVP caliber player. But Jamal Shed
is unreal. Definitely. Right downthe stretch of Saturday's game, he hit
the game winner just after the buzzerwent off. He's the first team All
American he will be. It isawesome. It's so fun to watch what
(01:51:50):
he's done from the beginning of hiscareer there to where he is now.
Speaking of college basketball, We've gotsomething else that came up over the weekend
and has to do with storming thecourt. We'll talk about that next.
Hey, it's Craig at Listen tothe Home of the Rockets on yours smart
speaker. Just pass Hey, Googleplay Sports Talk seven ninety on iHeartRadio.
(01:52:13):
We've all seen it in college basketball. Happens every now and then on the
grid iron, on the college landscape, kids painting their faces, not getting
and some entities, some conferences, some legislating bodies have said, we really
cannot have this anymore. It's justnot right, it's unsafe. We can't
have you storm in the court,we can't have you storm in the field.
(01:52:33):
You can yell overrated, which alsodoesn't make sense. After you've just
beaten them, you're now saying they'renot as good, so your wind means
less. But that's okay. Butyeah, we saw some court stormings in
the last several years that have resultedin unwonted consequences. The danger of the
players on the court is and it'snot even always the opposing players. There's
just too many people that don't belongon the court on the court, and
(01:52:55):
so you've had some conferences step forwardand institute penalties for it, which has
obviously slowed it or completely ended it. And you've had instances where, you
know, Matt Painter talked about it, the Purdue coach earlier this year,
that we're idiots for just waiting forsomething even worse to happen. It's it's
going to because we keep allowing theseplayers that are have just lost and are
(01:53:18):
trying. All they're trying to dois either get to the handshake line or
get off the court. And thesecollege students, that's the majority of who's
running on the court or out ofcontrol and feeling very very very courageous because
there's so many of them that theycan kind of do whatever they wanted.
It happens far too often. It'skind of the same thing that kind of
social media has created, this eraof confidence that doesn't belong there. So
(01:53:43):
court storming is is, it's dangerous, it's very very simple, and it's
not very well policed literally from security. We saw Caitlin Clark get bumped earlier
this year after a game. Andit's teams that bring in it's just because
they're good. Duke's a great exampleof that. When you're in a conference
with a few teams for a numberof years, because now there's a bunch
(01:54:04):
of teams in their conference they don'thave rivalries with. But Wake Forest beats
them this weekend. You know, has a couple point lead, four point
lead late, and everybody knows what'scoming. And if you missed it,
there was a player and college studentincident on the court, to the point
that that player had to be helpedoff the court by his coach and some
other staff members. And he's apretty good player. And this is what
(01:54:27):
he had to say. He hadto say about it after the game.
The player involved in basically getting runinto and taunted and yapped at by the
opposing fans. If you've seen it, you can debate whether or not he
also initiated anything with these on rushingplayers. But here's what he had to
say. All hell goes crazy, and you know, you've got these crazy
(01:54:48):
cousites just doing whatever they want, and you know, it's just gotta be
at gotta be a little more protectivewhen things like that happened. So I
absolutely feel like it was personal, you know, intentional for sure. You
know, like I said, there'sthere's no reason where they see a big
guy like me trying to work myway up the court and they can't just
(01:55:10):
work around me. You know, there's no excuse for that. No,
everyone was just waiting for the momentand they did what they did. Do
anything that's out like, they didn'tdo anything that's out there. It's you
know, that's just ridiculous. Tendto agree, and that's Kyle phil Powski,
one their best player, probably areone of them and certainly a prospect.
We'll get to all of our analysis, but we'll hear from the head
coach next. This is my goodpersonal friend John Shire, the head coach
(01:55:35):
of Duke. When are we goingto band course storm? Like? When
are we going to ban that?Like? How many tons does a player
have to get into something where theyget punched or they get pushed, or
they get taunted right in their faceand it's a dangerous thing. It's he's
being as simplistic as you can possiblybe. Is it fun to watch?
(01:55:57):
Sure? Is it fun for theuniversity? Is it fun for the kids?
Yes? So I would think youhave two options, and I do
think they're also very simple in nature. Execution might be a little bit more
difficult, but simple in nature.Neither of those two options were suggested by
Jay Billis when he was on GetUp. He had a different option.
One time. All you have todo is once they're on the court,
(01:56:20):
don't let them off, just sayyou're all detained and give them all citations
or arrest them if you want to, and then court stormings will stop the
next day. There's no accountability forthis. The fans feel like it's an
entitlement, and the universities like it, and the truth is we like it.
(01:56:41):
I want that to play out sohe can see how ridiculous that is,
so we won't have enough handcuffs.Instead of roping it off or using
the manpower to keep them off, allow them to come on the court,
and then use the rope and manpowerto keep them on. This is kind
of what he's saying, is kindof the equivalent of the rule they made
(01:57:02):
in the NBA where you don't leavethe bench or you're going to get suspended
next game. I want to talkabout court storming, and I do have
solutions, but I cannot believe thatreminded me of what I mean, league
leader, all time, greatest.I don't care what anybody says. Bruce
Bowen is nowhere near him. PatBeverly's nowhere near him. Jose Alvarado's gotta
(01:57:24):
go. Oh, he's got togo. He's such a turd. If
you didn't see what he did thispast weekend, there were fines and suspensions
handed out for an altercation at theend of their game with the Heat the
Pelicans in the Heat stem from alate hard foul with Kevin Love Jes Kevin
Love, and the player wasn't veryhappy out of teammates warrant. So there
(01:57:45):
were some shoves and then Jimmy Butlergot the face of Naji Marshall shoved him
away and his hands were close toMarshall's face. Then when Marshall retaliated,
he basically was pushing back Jimmy Butlerby his neck, and so the whole
scrum, which was basically at thethrow line, just kept traveling further and
further away from the Heat bench andcloser and closer to the Pelicans bench.
Two players from the Heat came offof their bench, but only along the
(01:58:10):
sidelines along the scorers table, butthat's still leaving the bench area, but
they didn't get into the scrum, and Jose Alvarado did the same thing from
the Pelicans bench. He was notin the game. He just made his
way across the scorers table and thenwas basically standing next to Thomas Bryant,
the seven foot big for the Heat, who was not in the game at
the time, and they began talkingto each other, and the more you
watch, it didn't even seem likeit was rising to some level of anything
(01:58:32):
was gonna happen. They were probablygonna draw suspensions because they left the bench,
but that was it. And thenwhatever Jose Alvarado kept saying, I
wouldn't say he was in his face. He's about a foot shorter than him,
but he's super confident and brave andeverything, and he ends up throwing
the first shove punch, and gosh, this video is so perfect and describing
(01:58:54):
and showing Jose Alvarado. He pushesand shoves him and Bryant can't quite get
to him and throw any kind ofreal punch, but he There's a secondary
altercation involving two guys who had nothingto do with it and decided that they
were interested gap at each other, initiated by Alvarado. But as soon as
that happened, a staff member anda player are in between them, and
(01:59:15):
that's when Alvarado became Oh, nowI want to pretend I want to fight,
pretending to try to get past thepeople in between them, pretending to
want to climb on the scorers tableto get back at him, and not
so shockingly immediately being able to calmhimself and walk off the court. Because
it's all an act. Like asan NBA player, he's a great actor.
He got a three game suspension, well deserved. I'm looking at it
(01:59:39):
right now in super slow mo,and you're right, it's like, oh,
now I'm going to get up onthe scorers table. He's such a
turd. It's just a lot oflike the antics from a basketball standpoint.
You know, if they're successful, they're annoying. But if it works better,
you know, power to them.Good job you've hidden on the court
and run up. But he triedto do it to Men Thompson in their
(02:00:00):
last meeting, and a men luckilysaw him in time. I mean,
he's an NBA player who will literallybend down, get in a fetal position
on the court in the corner wherehe thinks nobody will see him, and
then try to run from a runbehind a player and still after her additioned
all the other Pat Beverley type andgetting you know, post play antics.
He had postplay antics in this gamethat weren't even related to the last one
(02:00:25):
I mentioned. Did you see whathe did after he got to the tunnel.
After being ejected. What he didhe turned around and mimicked like he
was, you know, a boxer, like throwing air punches, and it
was like, oh, okay, that that further makes what you're talking about
where he waits till there's fifty peoplein between him and the guy even dumber.
Yeah, court storming to go backto that briefly run something we'll hit
(02:00:45):
on in the final segment. Oneother item we haven't gotten to today.
But you know, there are betterways to handle it than what most colleges
and most conferences do because they literallydo nothing. They let it happen.
They don't legislate anything, they don'thave security to handle it. They just
watch it unfold and hope nothing happens. Like a better way someone getting trampled,
(02:01:08):
because that's really what is I thinkwhat the people are afraid of that
are trying to dissuade this type ofbehavior. But anyway, I digress,
because one place you're not gonna haveto worry about any of that is when
you're in a Kawasaki mule, specificallythe new Kawasaki Ridge and you can see
it in person at the Houston LivestockShow and Rodeo. It's the first time
(02:01:29):

they also have scars from ice skatingat the galleria, not on their knees.
But they're rejected little hearts. Yougo away. No couples skate for
these two. Back to Adam Clintonand Adam Wexlers on Sports Talk seven night.
(02:03:00):
Do you remember earlier this year whenthe Rockets lost to the Lakers in
LA and it was just atrocious downthe stretch? How many free throws the
Lakers and specifically Lebron James got inthat fourth quarter. Well, I'm glad
you asked, because the Lakers werevery frustrated after their loss to the Suns
the other night, the disparity andtheir errand boy Dave mcmannimon, by the
(02:03:27):
way, wrote the article, Oh, I'm sorry, did you not think
that that was an astute description ofhim? He does not work for the
teams. Believe fowls not being calledequally. So the Suns shot a mere
nineteen free throws you how many forthe Lakers? Eight? So it's not
that big of a deal. It'snot forty three to ten. The officials
(02:03:47):
kept calling the Lakers for all theseadditional fouls. They had two more fouls
than the Suns. So how manydid they lose by? Ten? Okay,
so it wouldn't have made a difference. What would have made a difference
if they were I think played better. I think well, I mean maybe
I don't know. I don't knowif we're kind of getting out of hand
here. An eight free throw gameis probably among the league's lowest this season.
(02:04:12):
I'm gonna go back to November nineteenthagainst the Rockets, a one oh
four or one oh five, oneoh four final, in which I believe
the Lakers shot. Oh here,it is, yes, twenty nine to
ten advantage Lakers free throws attempted inthat game. The Rockets made eight of
(02:04:36):
ten. The Lakers made twenty oneof twenty nine, so they missed eight.
But I mean the Rockets only gotto make eight because they had ten
attempts. I mean, that's thefree throw disparity in a one point game
that the Rockets lost by one. They've bludged the Lakers two other times a
lot of game has been played thisyear, There's only been twelve where a
team has shot fewer than the eightthe Lakers had the other night. So
(02:05:00):
am I supposed to feel sorry forthe La Lakers who have had I mean,
how much he's got advantages of alltypes they've gotten over the years.
You think you're a Super Bowl commercialreagency and he's got advantages. I just
love how many times he says advantagesin that scene, Todd kill you to
play some organize competitive spots once ina while, Would that make you love
(02:05:25):
me more? I just anytime nonsenselike that it happens, like come on,
well, anytime the Lakers have awhole whole ass article that I like
to say written about this topic,it should happen to them. Every team's
writers would do the same thing.Yeah, but not every team's writers are
(02:05:45):
as much of a dork as Davemcmanimon. It's worse when he writes it,
That's all I'm saying here. Lakersare sixth in the NBA and free
throw attempts per game fourth. Okay, there you go, and uh,
I can't wait till Lakers don't makethe plan it's gonna be glorious. Don't
make the plan, Yeah, don'tfall Utah is gonna pass them? Sure,
(02:06:09):
okay, why not? That's nothappening. All right, I'll tell
