(00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named athim talking your team, Adam Clinton and
Adam Wexler are the A Team Athree one here on Sports Talks seven ninety
It is a Monday edition of theA Team wex over there, ac right
(00:25):
here. And how about Trey Campbellfilling in for the show killer Dan Matthews.
Good to have him along for theride as we take you guys up
until six o'clock tonight. Lots ofimportant things happening over the weekend. Just
kidding that. Really it was aweird sports weekend. A quality win by
the Rockets the other night. Wellyou laughing already. Tell me the biggest
(00:46):
thing that happened. Welcome into ourfirst show in three days. Nothing happened,
though nothing did happen. Nothing happened. Tell me the biggest thing that
happened that didn't involve a women's collegebasketball record being broken that nobody cares about
on the show. Fortieth on thelist, Thank you me, number one.
Oh, there's a combine. There'sTexans news. There's a combine all
last week players getting released, there'splayers getting signed. I'll tell you when
(01:07):
you move the needle of the Rockets. I just mentioned the rockets. I
don't know what. Literally every weekendsomething happens. I would never never think
of that, nothing like major, nothing major happened. You again, you
tell me something that everybody's like,Oh yeah, man, I remember that.
It's just one of those weekends. It's okay, it's okay. They
don't have to all fifty two ofthese weekends don't have to be action packed
(01:30):
when we get in here on Mondayabout Oh my gosh, can you believe
this happened? I just feel likethat was one of them. I feel
like I'm waiting on baseball more thanI ever have been before. And I'm
starting to agree with you. AlthoughI'm not going to Bogart next segment,
which is our non signature segment,I'm starting to really agree with you about
Justin Verlander, and I don't likethe sound of it. It's nothing happened
(01:53):
that is out of the ordinary thatwould make me change my mind. It's
just the more I think about it, it's not just that, oh yeah,
you were right, he's probably notgonna make opening Day. What I'm
worried about is it should be lessabout go ahead. Well, I was
gonna say, it's not about openingday as much as Okay, well,
when's the first start gonna be.That's what I'm starting to just in the
(02:14):
back of my mind, get concernedabout nothing major. It's not like ruining
my day yet, but it might. At no point, no point should
it ever ruin your day unless somethingnew happens. And like you said,
we'll get to the official EIGHTEAM exclusiveJV update. No one else does about
fifteen minutes. But I mean,I have a calendar. I'm not Karnak,
(02:35):
I'm not a magician. I'm nota fortune teller. I don't have
tarot car. I have common sense. I have a calendar. Yeah,
that's all. That's all it is. I am here at spring training.
I'm not ready. I'm a coupleweeks behind. It's nothing special. I'm
not a genius. I don't pretendto be a genius. And it's not
even a given that he won't beavailable. But it until something changes.
And the great news is from allthe way back to Valentine's Day when he
(03:00):
got to camp and said, I'mbehind schedule. Although I do not believe
it was an injury, it wasjust gonna feel right until something is said
otherwise or some performance on the sideis otherwise or a live VP keeps not
happening, anything like that, Thenyou know, I still see twenty eight
to thirty starts for JV, andI'm not sure what number of people were
(03:21):
expecting, but at its best itwas thirty four thirty three. Like,
what difference does it make if hemisses two or three starts over the course
of one hundred and sixty two gameschedule, especially if none of them come
in October or beyond, if they'replaying into November. I say, as
they have before, that's what reallywill come down to determining where this team
is going to be. And Inothing that's happened so far suggests they're not
(03:44):
going to be a part of thepostseason party, even the Justin Verlander situation.
And we will mix in as wealways do when we get there to
about three fifteen the JV and JPupdate because they go hand in hand.
If you come to camp in thesame day and say you're behind schedule and
say, you, guys, comeson a shoulder issue but you don't believe
it's anything serious and he might evenbe ready for Opening Day, and you
have two easy initials to stick together, then you got your JV and JP
(04:06):
update, so yes, that willcome your way. The starting pitching for
the Astros continues to look like they'redoing all the things they need to do
to get ready for the start ofthe season. You have one run allowed
by Brandon Belak in his one start, and then the start that Framber Valdez
has before we left you on Friday, the Thursday start, and that's pretty
(04:26):
much it. Everybody else has kindof been able to go out there work
through whatever they're trying to do andwhatever stage they're at. Most of their
top flight starters, really the twoof them that are healthy, Jave and
Framber had a week of not pitchingin games, and then that's why Javier
was able to go out there andgive you three innings in his first appearance
since we last were with you.No hits in those three innings, or
(04:47):
Katia another three inning outing where hecertainly looked like he was harnessing what he
wants as he moves forward and getsready for whatever role is in front of
him, and again as we sithere today, that role is almost assuredly
as one of the starters the firsttrip through the rotation, whether it's five
guys or six. I think thatremains to be seen based on health.
But he's done nothing but suggests thisis a spot for me for the time
(05:10):
being. And if and when theygo from four healthy starters to five to
six, to seven to eight,if everybody's healthy, when both Luis Garcia
and Lanspacullor's junior return well, theycan go ahead and figure it out then,
because that obviously would be a tremendouslyawesome problem to have. You might
even feel compelled if things are goingso well and the timeline works out,
(05:31):
that you could utilize some of thatsurplus to not just augment your bullpen,
but maybe augment your team at thetrade deadline. But today is March fourth,
probably not going to talk about theAstros activity at the twenty twenty four
trade deadline just yet, but wewill get there soon enough. Rockets back
at home this week. Couple gamesTuesday and Wednesday. Reminder about that earlier
(05:56):
start on Wednesday, Rockets got toget that National TV Love Worldwide leader wants
to bump that time at Toyota Centerup to a six thirty tip, clearly
because the Rockets are participating in agame and not the Clippers. Yeah,
it's I mean, it's not aKawhi Leonard game. It's not a Paul
George game. It's not a RussellWestbrook game. It is a Rockets gain
jal game. Lately, Jalen Greena couple of good performances, the last
(06:16):
one, even though both were thirtyfour point performance. The last one,
the most recent one, was byfar the better one. Again even with
the same point total. Do Imean the same game was played. He
was fantastic. He was the playerkeeping his cool. Bradley Beal was the
player losing his cool and getting ejectedfrom the game. Devin Booker twisting an
ankle by stepping on a teammate's legin that game, and the Rockets taking
(06:41):
care of business. They took theearly lead and they wouldn't give it back,
which is something in the NBA.It's not a Rockets problem, it's
an NBA problem. It happens allthe time, just the way the games
are these days and the amount ofoffense that can be put on the board.
They end up with a series seasonsplit, two wins, two losses
against the feat Suns and that socalled gauntlet of going five games against two
(07:03):
teams, three against Phoenix, twoagainst OKC. All five of those games
obviously played against two teams that aregoing to the playoffs. Well, the
Rocket's won two of those games, both against Phoenix. Yeah, and I
don't even looking back, I'm noteven mad about the Thunder games. I
think the Thunder are in the beginningstages, are becoming like a Golden State
(07:26):
esque monster. Uh. There wasan article about that today, but just
without even without even looking at it, I knew the gist of what it
was going to be. And it'snot about necessarily the fact that they have
stockpiled draft picks, because I don'tthink any of those draft picks are going
to play for them. I thinkwhat the Thunder are gonna end up doing
(07:46):
is taking a Shay Giljos Alexander chetHolmgren dynamic duo in flipping a lot of
their assets and maybe some of theirplayers they have right now for a Bona
five third superstar and they're gonna wreckshot for the next ten years if they
do it the right way. That'sthe scary part. I'll take the under
on matching Golden State's toes, whichis four. Okay, well yeah,
(08:09):
no, I mean that's not that'snot. I'm not talking about several stretches
of Thunder history where they make thefinals five straight years. I'll go with
that as well. Are how canyou be sure? I can't, But
that's where I would play it.Well, that's probably the field. I
mean, i'd even lower the numberif you want me to. Mean Sh'S
awesome and shape shave. I'm surprisedwith you know, twenty ish games to
(08:31):
go. It seems like it's afoe gone conclusion. Everyone's just ready to
give Nicola Jokic the MVP Award again. I don't I don't really understand why
he does everything for the Nuggets. He's their best player, he's a triple
double machine. And it's gotten thereliterally the well they all have the same
record matter, it's literally the exactsame thing that she's doing. He's their
best player, he's a double doublemachine, he has the most forty point
(08:54):
games in the NBA. He's he'she is exactly like Nikola in that everything
they do run. So you know, what I'm saying comes so easily to
him, you can't stop him. They should at least be won too.
And I don't mean that as anaffront to you know, anybody else,
Jason Tatum and a few others. But you know, Tatum, I don't
think has any chance to win theMVP because his team is so freaking good,
(09:15):
right, And if their roster isinsane and they're gonna run away with
the East, if they stay healthyor if teams ask Steve Kerr for advice
on how to defend them, theyshould be in great shape. Steve Kerr
is probably going to wind up beingthe most overrated coach in NBA history.
But that's just me. I willsay this during our twenty five minute halftime
on Saturday night because that seemingly wasthe best time to it. I mean,
(09:37):
I get it. You induct AmariStodamire into your ring or wall of
honor or whatever they call it inPhoenix there at the Artist formerly known as
America West Arena. It's always goingto be America West for me because that's
where Mario Ellie hit The Kiss ofDeath. Let's face it, well,
that was a different year, which, by the way, Matt didn't know
about. When I made a referenceon the broadcast, I was stunned.
(09:58):
He asked me during the break,He's like, wait, who are you
talking about? I said Modern Reference, just sure that he knew I was
talking about Danny Ainge. Well, there are two things that happened this week,
and Amari Stodomar's jersey being retired andthat ceremony was one. And then
a really nice story in Cleveland withDan Gilbert's son. They had a bow
tie night and they lowered a bannerin his honor and all that's cool,
(10:18):
it's it was super Everything they didin the arena that night was unbelievable.
And the banner drops and you can'thelp but notice with the shot there's a
banner right next to it of anothercavalier whose number is retired. It's zaderunas
Ilgauskis so the super positive always thinkingof the positive way, me was like,
does Cleveland have the worst group ofretired numbers in the NBA? Is
(10:41):
it as pathetic as I think itis? Because the Drunislawski's numbers. Okay,
so who are they? Well,it's like big Z his nickname,
but really like the first thought wasthat. The second thought was, and
compare it to Houston's just their bigMan Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer,
Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer Hall of Fame.
That's their whole list. Nothing butwell in the next one that is
(11:05):
going to be up there will begoing to the Hall of Fame too,
and James Harden much as I hateit because I just I'm bitter, I
mean yal Clyde, Calvin, MosesDream, Elvin Rudy. I think I
actually only did jor sixth, Wellyou only did five, I think,
but I got I think the lastone. But all seven of them they're
all in the Hall of Fame.So let's see who all of them?
Mark Price, they have a Hallof Famer among their eight numbers retired?
(11:30):
Is that him? No, it'sNate Thurman, who played there for three
years. What he only played therefor three seasons. I mean you could
probably think of who Cleveland's pathetic groupof we led them to. No NBA
Dodger. Yes, Brad Doherty theuh same different racing analyst Brad Doherty his
teammates Mark Price and not Ron Harper, Larry Nants Okay, Skywalker, Uh
(11:56):
not a cav one of the guyswho does pre post pre happy Larry answer?
Uh No, that's Kenny Skywalker.Oh duh? Who am I thinking
wasn't Larry Nts in the Cleveland Cavalier. Mister cav is Austin Carr. His
number is retired. He also doesnot have a bust in the Hall of
Fame. Well, they'll get Lebronsoon enough, whenever he decides to stop
playing. And if Lebron played agame against the other eight and they're all
(12:18):
in their prime and it was oneon eight, he'd win. That's so
mean and true. Just sometimes it'sjust things that happen over the weekend,
especially when nothing major happens, theyget you thinking about it. Okay,
thank you, thank you wex forproving my point of what I was trying
to make. Your big thing fromthe weekend was how terrible the retired jerseys
(12:41):
are for the Cleveland Cattics. Thiswasn't much better, which was the root
of it all. That tells methat everything in the Hall of Famer.
Also, I just got who isI'm sorry I forgot the bottom of the
list. They're all Hall of famers, Chuck Connie Hawkins, Paul Westfall recent
inductees, and Steve Nash. KevinJohnson's not on there. He's not a
Hall of Famer. That's actually surprisingto me. Why maybe I'm over over
(13:07):
I like that it's not the Hallof Man. These guys are really really
good. We see. That's howI feel about the Basketball Hall of Fame.
I feel like there's too many peoplein there. We'll get into it,
of course, super huge topic todaywho's in the NBA and Hall of
Fame, and we will definitely getto that next week. We'll get to
our JV update, We'll get morein on the Rockets, and yes,
obviously a focus on the NFL combineand that all the competitions are complete,
(13:28):
the medicals are complete, the interviewsare complete until they interview more people tomorrow.
When we sit in these shares atthis very time or stand, we
will have reached the closed window portionof the franchise tag Era in twenty twenty
four. Three o'clock tomorrow is whenit closes. And there was some news
on that front, obviously as itrelates to Houston. There was a major
(13:50):
signing today involving Houston the area, and we'll get to that as well.
So we continue here on the eighteen. Right now, we're gonna get to
Primeway, Federal Credit Union and thefact that you've got to sign up for
that checking account, because listen,it's absolutely when I say it's the best,
I'm not just you know, readingcopy or playing it up. This
(14:11):
is the best checking account you aregoing to get your hands on Primeway Federal
Credit Union. You can earn upto two percent interest, which is good
enough as it is, but thenthey're going to throw in all sorts of
extras roadside assistants, which gives youprotection and frankly, peace of mind.
But what really does give you thosetwo things is dark web monitoring, which
is absolutely awful that we have toeven have such a thing, but here
(14:35):
we are in twenty twenty four.If you don't have dark web monitoring,
you need to get it. Youalso need to get mobile phone protection.
You need to be able to takeadvantage of things like travel and leisure discounts,
telehealth, and shopping rewards. Allof that is available and ready and
waiting for you at Primeway Federal CreditUnion. Even use your debit card to
pay and get those monthly charges waived. PRIMEWAYFCU dot com is the website.
(14:58):
They've got a user friendly, easyonline application located right there. They care
about getting you the best account available, and they offer three far more superior
checking accounts out there against the competitionat PRIMEWAYFCU dot com. Visit PRIMEWAYFCU dot
com and we meet it here onSports Talk seven to ninety on the A
(15:22):
team, Wex and AC here withyou Trey as well. The Broncos in
their own release have indicated we've notifiedquarterback Russell Wilson, then he will be
released after the league year begins Marchthirteenth. Here's what is head coach Sean
Payton and general manager had to sayin a joint statement. I love joint
(15:48):
statements to both of them. Wespoke with Russell Wilson today to inform him
of his release after the start ofthe league year. On behalf of the
Broncos. We thank Russell for hiscontributions and dedication to our team and community,
while wishing him the best as hecontinues his career. We've informed him
he needs to clean out his officeby March tenth so we can issue that
(16:08):
to Brock Osweiler, who's coming backto the franchise as quarterback emeritus. Thank
you, okay, which I thinkI added that part. Okay, The
quarterback emeritis is a okay. Firstof all, what was the word I
used last week that you were like, you need to use that more,
or we need to use that more. Emeritis needs to be used a lot
more. And then they got tothe post Russell Wilson portion of their Broncos
(16:30):
life together. As we move forward, we're focused on building the strongest team
possible for the twenty twenty four seasonand beyond. We're excited to improve this
offseason. We'll have the flexibility toget better through the draft and free agency.
Sure you will, well, hewas due to hit them even harder
financially based on timing, and sothat's why this move was made. An
(16:51):
additional thirty seven million, fully guaranteed, will now not be in place,
and that's why the timing of thisis what it is. Two years in
Denver, two different head coaches, three different head coaches over the last three
seasons of his career, ages thirtythree, thirty four, and thirty five,
and next year we'll make it fourin four years for Russell Wilson,
(17:11):
and he would be looking for hisfirst season quarterbacking a team to a winning
record seventeen wins and twenty seven lossesin the forty four games he started over
the past two years for Seattle andDenver. That's the record of the teams
he was the starting quarterback for overthe last three seasons. That is usually
the sign of No team in theNFL should want him as their starting quarterback
(17:37):
unless their starting quarterback of the futureis on the team, and it's your
insurance for maybe not putting him onthe field too fast or getting him killed.
But I don't think an those situationsactually occur. I don't have an
obvious answer because this is not newnews really to our minds, it's literal
news. But we didn't think hewas going to be playing there. We
(17:57):
figured he'd be a free agent.Any team in the NFL could sign him.
I don't have an obvious home.I don't think that makes much sense.
Well, to have Russell Wilson onyour roster. I don't know what
your goals are if Russell Wilson isplaying quarterback for you, If you have
him on your roster and he's starting, which is like maybe two scenarios in
(18:18):
the entire league. Maybe I'm notsure, maybe three. I mean,
he's better than a lot of otherquarterbacks, but what's your goal. Your
goal is to have him start forthe first year of whoever you draft,
who you actually want to have startingfor you much sooner. Yeah, I
hate that goal. Well, Imean, Alex Smith did it with with
Pat Mahomes and he's quickly ascending tothe greatest quarterback of all time. And
(18:41):
I know Russell Wilson once was betterthan Alex Smith, but he certainly isn't
now. If Russell Wilson today playedquarterback in Kansas City the year they drafted
Mahomes, he would never last tothe whole Ye would be Alex Smith wasn't
really looking over his shoulder because theyplayed good football the whole year because he
was good, because they didn't needPat Mahomes to come in and play for
(19:02):
them. That's just I don't Again, I don't know where that scenario rests
in the NFL. I don't knowwhat team is looking at that, And
I personally I think there's a really, really good chance that nobody signs him
and he ends up playing in agood situation after the year starts, so
two or three teams, like ifhe signed with nobody last year, if
(19:23):
he were available, very hypothetical. It took all of five snaps to know
where he should be playing once theyear started. As soon as Aaron Rodgers
gets down and Russell Wilson's out there, he and his agent said, oh,
maybe it makes more sense for usto just sit here and wait for
the first three quarterbacks off good teamsto get hurt, and we'll just go
play there. He would have beena Jet in a heartbeat. Awesome,
(19:44):
but he's waited Jets Wilson than theywere with Zack Wilson. I should say,
yeah, exactly. That's kind ofthe point. Now if he signs
with a team, then his onlyhope of really playing is well, the
team is signing me as team leverage. The same scenario, but now the
team has to trade him. TheJets have to call blank team that has
Russell Wilson and will obviously is heavailable? Can we get him on our
(20:07):
roster? There might be a fewteams like that, so again, not
signing it would be one option.Signing and hoping would be another. And
again looking around the league with howmany this past weekend. We started the
weekend with probably four quarterbacks going inthe first round. We might have gotten
to five. We might have gottento six. If Nix, Pennox McCarthy
(20:29):
are added to May's Drake May,Jaydon Daniels, and Caleb Williams. Okay,
well, none of those six teamsthat drafted those six quarterbacks should have
Russell Wilson on the team, noneof them in my opinion. And then
there's another twenty that have starting quarterbacksthat they'd rather see on the field than
Russell. So now you got sixteams left again ballparking it, Yeah,
(20:49):
what do those teams really want todo? And why does he make sense
for them? And what role ishe actually playing or who's he standing in
front of? And is a quarterback? You to an eight and nine record?
By the way, what the moneyis he making that needs a quarterback?
Isn't drafting at the top of thedraft because he helped get you six,
seven, eight, nine wins, which you don't really want, right,
(21:11):
because yeah, how much money ishe making? It's a great question.
I keep hearing from people about JustinFields, like, oh, he
makes no money this year and thenthe fifth year option is a huge jump.
Well yeah, it's a huge jump, but ranking among quarterbacks, it's
nothing. It's twenty five million forJustin Fields or whatever number it is.
That's nothing, way less than allthese other guys. That's half of what
(21:32):
Pat Mahomes is going to make nextyear, and you should be taking what's
he making next year when you pickup the option, and what's he making
this year and average that, especiallyif you could extend him and then you
could redo the numbers. But itis something that will I say it as
a an outsider who does not ownany team, and I'm not the general
manager for any team, guest stockin eight team. My personal belief is
(21:52):
what I laid out. There's noway some team's not gonna sign him.
I know. There exactly all youneed to know to your point about out
Russell Wilson and how it went, which, by the way, I was
shocked to realize that it had beentwo years. It seemed like he just
got there. Well remember the NathanielHackett year. Yeah, but that's what's
I mean, it's so far inthe review, like that's how bad Sean
(22:12):
Payton was. He's replaced the Hackettyear, not the Hackett era. You
can't really have an era if it'sa year unless you're the Texans and David
Cully's there, and it was theDavid Cully era. Coach Cully a shout
out today, stop calling him coachCully, calling David Cully Dave Cully as
he was known apparently in Philadelphia gota shout out from Jason Kelce today during
his forty plus minute long did thatmake him cry? He cried about everything
(22:37):
it was I'm asking and yes,for those of you that were wondering,
and I know this is a hugeman. I wonder if he watched that
entire press conference. I know helikes pressers. You did, didn't you
start to finish all the way throughthe four hugs? Kelsey Kelsey, Kelsey,
Kelsey and Kelsey and Kelsey. We'llget to that for sure, and
all you need to know about thislast season. As far as Russell Wilson
in Denver, if you go toEspens Denver Bronco's depth chart right now,
(23:03):
he's listed behind Jared Stidham. Well, that's because they mentioned him, I
know. And that's how the seasonended. He was just the starter.
It's just when you see it ona page, it really crystallizes just how
things have fallen off for him andride into So everybody knows last year's regular
season leaders and quarterback rating in theAFC Lamar Jackson was one too, it
(23:26):
was two. C. J.Stroud was three. Joe Burrow's replacement,
Jake Browning, was four. RussellWilson was five, ahead of Herbert Mahomes,
Alan Burrow, Lawrence. But whatabout passing yards, because that's the
one that really met. Let's goto passing yards now, Russell Wilson in
terms of passing yards, he wasninth. See almost properly rated. Yes,
(23:49):
well again he missed some time becausethat top quarterback, fifth rated quarterback.
Get out of here, grab somepine. We want Jared Stidham to
play, which they literally said tohim and told him and all that.
Well, the union got involved andthey say they were threatening him with this.
Well, now he's not going tobe a Denver Bronco. As of
March thirteenth, such major breaking newsthat a quarterback I told you nobody should
(24:11):
sign. We had to shelve theJV update for one more segment. We
will do our very very best todeliver you that news when we come back
here on Sports Talk seven ninety backinto it here on a Monday edition of
the eighteen. Appreciate everybody back herewith us for it. You know how
to find us on the Twitters orthe social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
(24:32):
It's now x just called Twitter. That's at Adam Clinton, at Adam
J. Wexler, and you canalways head us up on the telephone lines
seven one three two one two fiveseven ninety and opportunity for us to do
what we do each and every daysince March fourteenth, and that is deliver
you the all important number thirty fivejustin Verlander JV update. Probably won't be
(25:00):
saying it today. We have comepick up in the system, so it's
hard to pick up. Try onemore time. I gotta hear you sing.
No, I can't the whole thingso fine, Thomas show, see
you got it all screwed up.The name of the show. Yeah,
you don't even know what time itis or what we're doing today. Well,
it's it's basically a bitsteal it is. Well, yeah, he started
using this, Oh he did?You didn't know that? What does it
(25:22):
sound like? It was? She'sI think it was Deshaun Watson before that,
I think it was somebody else.Oh okay, it's okay, Oh
yeah it was it was Korea. He was the original Well, I mean
much like the TV and movie producerswho think saying reboot means they're creative.
I guess I did the same withouteven knowing it. Well, that's not
true, because if you could dothe equivalent of sports talk for a Marvel
(25:44):
movie, that would be the otherthing. Does no more good ideas for
TV and no more good ideas formovies. We'll just do a reboot,
or we'll just re release it,you know what, or we will call
it the thirty fifth anniversary of it. Watch. But if you do like
a reunion with the cast, orget new interviews in, or maybe have
a director a commentary, then youcan get away with that. I will.
(26:07):
I will do something I partook inthis weekend and make it pertinent to
what we're talking about here with JustinVerlander. So far nothing, oh of
course, Well I haven't started yet. I was encouraged mightily by one of
our coworkers to watch a movie, and it took me like hours to do
(26:30):
it instead of months. Like you, I had never seen No Country for
Old Men until this weekend. ReallyI not see. I knew that would
get a rise out of you,tre And it's it's as good as everyone
said it would be and more. And in the title and some elements of
the film kind of reminds me alittle bit of Justin Verlander. I mean,
(26:52):
he's basically a mercenary at this pointin his career, albeit he's done
most of his mercenary years in aAstro uniform. But it's a very it's
a very gritty film, and Iwould I would qualify Justin Verlanders's career and
his attempt at getting onto the fieldfor the twenty twenty four season with that
(27:15):
word. Right now, it's prettywhat's the best movie that any of the
first three actors listed as cast membersof that movie have done? If it's
not that movie, we're talking aboutJames bromy Lee, we're talking about Tommy
Lee Jones. Yeah, we're talkingabout Hobby Er Bardon. I've Tommy Lee's
got so many I'm still what's thatw for Burlan? Would be it's good
(27:41):
for him? What's that about?I don't know, so former President.
I think I love The Fugitive, which is also technically, I guess,
a remake, but not really. It's a remake of a TV show.
Didn't you love Under Siege? No? Well I yes I did, but
I didn't like that's a Steven Siegallfilm, so it barely qualifies. Yeah,
(28:03):
so I was kind of just hittingthis just a cook below the belt
kind of deal. When you letinto that, like you telling me to
see Training Day? Is that's that'sreal? Both academy awesome? Yeah,
well No Country for Old Man gotbest Picture among four academies. No chance
you won't watch it? Well, you know, I've never seen it,
(28:26):
but would you you wouldn't. It'sI mean, look, it's not a
typical Uh, it's not an actionmovie from that standpoint, so it's boring.
No, it has action, ithas a lot of violence. Actually,
it's just it's it's a solid movie. It's a really good movie.
I wasn't a huge fan of theend. Is it a Cohen Brothers movie?
(28:48):
It is? Is it hilarious? No, there's no funny parts.
There might be like one accidental joke, but it's very serious. Well,
I'm super positive that I won't bewatching it. And that takes us to
our justin or update, because thatwas the phrase used by his manager,
Joe aspata I saw an upbeat JV. Super positive really like the way he
felt, and he was talking abouthis sixty pitch bullpen yesterday in West Palm
(29:15):
Beach. That's a pretty significant number. That's the kind of work you get
in to get yourself ramped up tomake appearances to be ready for the baseball
season, whether it's for Day oneon March twenty eighth, or Day seven
or Day ten or Day fifteen, whatever the case may be, and all
indications are they are hopeful that leadsthe way to having live VP sessions.
(29:36):
Before appearing in a game. Hethrew multiple pitches, not numbers of pitches,
but types of pitches. What's justa bunch of fastballs with sliders and
changeups without any issues. All thiscoming from our good buddy Brian McTaggart covered
the Astros in West Palm Beach,Florida, Franks Joe Aspata. Even from
pitch number one to pitch sixty,he felt really good off the for the
(30:00):
ball club today from game action andagain, all these appearances and all these
bullpen sessions or side sessions or playingcatch sessions. As we always say,
how you wake up the next day, how things feel the day after and
moving forward is the other part ofeach time you take one of those steps
a live VP. If he feltfine today I would feel like is now
(30:22):
in the cards and sometime on aWednesday or a Thursday, that's probably something
they might do. A sixty pitchbullpen session also means there are probably days
of you know, he's almost intoa more normal routine. You know,
if you go out and you makea start on to Tuesday and you throw
ninety five pitches and you're planning topitch again on Sunday after your normal rest,
there's a day in between where youthrow, you throw on the side
(30:45):
and part of your program. SoI'm sure that comes tomorrow, however they
want to do that. Whatever thatmeans, whatever they do, we'll get
that figured out. They'll get thatfigured out. Whether probably is something they're
now keeping their eye on. Withsome rain over this past weekend and rain
expected over the next couple of daysalso. But as has been the case
with every update since the hiccup, everything has indicated progress, everything is indicated,
(31:10):
everything feels fine, and he continuesto basically ramp up. Fair to
say, this is the types ofpositive feedback, news what have you that
we wouldn't get routinely from a Lancemc colors. For example, he would
try to do something and then therewould be a setback or he wouldn't feel
great the next day. And I'mjust thinking of the most prominent example Michael
Brantley. Another Yeah, and againI think that the way we're getting updates
(31:33):
here is another factor just coincidentally orhappens to be. They're it's spring training,
they're not in the middle of aseason. He's not away from the
team. He's practicing on the field. They're covering every day, right,
so they see him do it.There's no what did he do today?
Well, they watched him do it, and that's just usually not the case
with players rehabbing during the season.I mean, Michael Brantley took sixty took
(31:57):
thirty five swings today with the mediacovering the team at minute, made Park
know that. Well if he didit on the field during VP, because
they had right in front of them. But they have cages, they have
a complex elsewhere. I mean,it's a it's just a different timing.
And he's also in as opposed toboth of those players, you again just
happen to mention they were rehabbing, they had an injury or in both cases
(32:22):
a surgery they had to overcome. He doesn't there was no procedure. There's
nothing definitively even wrong with him. He's just trying to make sure he doesn't
have anything wrong. He could throwit at you know, maximum speed,
whatever that maximum speed is for fortyplus year olds need to get it this
year. Eighty nine. No,I think it's higher than eighty nine.
But he's not going to be,you know, throwing a one to two
(32:44):
fastball at ninety nine miles an hourpast hitters in twenty twenty four and might
get a ninety seven mile an hourfastball by him maybe once in a while.
We see it at ninety seven pointnine where he gets pissed off because
he's been hit around and he's like, all right, I'm ending this inning
right now, and I'm ramping itup to ninety nine. Blumber, look
at that on the gun. Itcould It could happen once. Usually how
(33:06):
it goes, by the way.Thank you to Brian for reaching out saying
the first daily update on the MattThomas Show was the Dwight Howard update,
and I vividly remember that Dwight Howardupdate as in, will he sign with
the Rockets in free agency? Sowe're talking what twenty twelve off season of
twenty twelve, I think is whenthat happened. We're thirteen and now he's
hanging out with JJ Burrea, tworeally likable individuals. I mean, JJ
(33:30):
was just on the receiving end ofa ridiculous Andrew Bidham foul. What else
did he do in his career? Are they both annoyed the crap out of
people if they weren't on your team? Well, JJ did it by playing.
Dwight did it because he was uhunique into this. Oh, Dwight
did it by playing to All hedid was dunk and get fouled and wine
and no get pushed from forgetting thetime where Kobe Bryant routinely called him soft
(33:52):
on the floor, what about whenthey were teammates? What do you call
him then? Much worse, alot worse. It's not like he's not
doing anything that's other people do.That was the problem in Kobe's opinion,
he wasn't doing anything well Orlando,LA and Houston and then almost everywhere else
in the NBA for twice. Didn'the play in China? He did for
a while. China. He playedin China. All right, when we
(34:15):
come back, there is somebody that'sofficially not going to be a Houston Texan,
which we kind of already knew, but now it's basically officially official until
it is official, and we'll tellyou who that is when we come back
next year on the eight team SportsTalk seven ninety. I want to tell
you that no matter who is onthe Texans this upcoming year or any of
your sports teams, doesn't matter ifyou're not seeing it with twenty twenty vision.
(34:37):
And the only way that you canguarantee to get that twenty twenty vision
with the best technology possible and thebest savings possible is by going to Berkeley
Is Center. Berkeley has got youcovered when it comes to everything you need
to get that twenty twenty vision. Why haven't you pulled the trigger yet?
Here's the deal. It's absolutely thebest way to go, especially when you
(35:01):
consider that they're still giving you theleap year savings here in the month of
March. They did not limit itjust to February. They are often offering
you the type of savings that onlycome along every four years on twenty twenty
vision. Get the Lasik procedure doneand get the savings so special that that's
the only time they're going to comearound Leap into Lasik all month long here
(35:22):
in March at Berkeley I Center withtheir Leap Year Lasik celebration. All the
details are available as usual at theirwebsite B E C Lasik dot com.
That's B E C Lasik dot com. Or you can give them a call
it's seven one three five two sixeyes seven one three five two six e
y E s and tell them AdamClanton from Sports Talk seven to ninety cent
(35:43):
you over. Russell Wilson was, let's right, well, he was prepared
for this into the sunset, thisplan of action. Just retire with Sierra
already. Oh, nobody wants tosee you play quarterback or your dumb press
conferences in a Steelers uniform, tombpress. See you again. The Stealer
have no quarterback in if they continueto not have a quarterback of the future,
(36:06):
maybe that's a possible, but they'regoing to draft one. I think
so, but they're not necessarily thegreatest possession to do it. Russell Wilson,
like I said, I assume heand his agents were well aware of
what was likely to come, sowell aware of it that Broncos Country got
a thank you statement from Russell Wilsonthis afternoon, not long after the joint
(36:28):
statement from the GM and head coachabout his exit from the Broncos and the
entire country. I think the gistof his multi country the paragraph commentary,
he talks about being beyond grateful. It was an honor, He's blessed.
Last line, tough times don't last, but tough people do. God's got
(36:50):
me. I'm excited for what's next. He thanked a lot of people,
people in the cafeteria, everybody helpinghim out. He noticed how an inordinate
amount of players thank the cafeteria workers. They see them a lot and they
do a lot for them. Ilike it. It's awesome. Thanks his
teammates and cherishes his time there, countless memories and friendships. Our family grew
(37:12):
here. They had a child duringtheir time post Seattle. So yeah,
Broncos country, thank you. We'llalways look back on our Denver Broncos years.
Is the time we had a childbecause nothing else happened. Again,
your family is all part of it. Jason Kelsey's retirement speech included his family
as well. Almost I'd say abouthalf of it was about him and his
brother, and then Ed, Donna, and Kai and the three daughters.
(37:32):
Ed's great dad name. Donna's waymore visible. Well, she took advantage
of the brother versus brother Super Bowland became the NFL's Mom of the Year.
And then she took advantage of sittingnext to Taylor Swift and having to
act like she's not annoyed by thewhole charade. She still got the first
hugs. I'm well Ed's personality andthe fact that they're not together. Which
(37:53):
one of them do you think theyinherited the taking off my shirt in a
sweet gene from well, that's Edor Donna. Well, I'm pretty sure
Donna's never done that. You don'tknow that she might have gone to Marty
gros Beads, but they don't.It just gets lifted, It doesn't come
off, it doesn't get discarded.Well, something's exposed. Yeah, his
(38:14):
worst belly than the belly took overand in his case man boobs. Yeah,
but he did retire today. Sotwo major pieces of NFL news about
a retirement, uncertainty about a future, and the other piece of major NFL
news affects the Texans. I guessfor those who believe that they were going
to be interested in bringing Mike Evansback to Texas and near his hometown of
(38:37):
Galveston, But in fact, hewill remain a Buck. It's not quite
Altuve like Buck for life, eventhough the Bucks will have you believe that
he's still one of the better receivers, certainly in the NFC and probably in
the NFL overall, very productive, the number one for an offense that played
in the playoffs this past year andwon a game. Imagine choosing Baker Mayfield
(38:58):
over CJ. Stroud. Couldn't beme. He signed for two years?
Yeah, well, I mean,Mike Evans is probably not retiring at age
thirty two. He's thirty right. Now, here's the problem. I have
to call him a buck for life. But ten NFL years, ten one
thousand plus yard seasons, and he'sgoing for number eleven and twelve presumably with
Baker Mayfield, and these should gohand in hand. What are you giving
(39:21):
twenty six million a year to MikeEvans for two years for if you're not
resigning Baker. Well, that's thefunny part. You are in this exactly,
and in this article it says bringingback Evans will not only help the
Buccaneers offense, but will also serveas another catalyst in the recruitment to re
sign free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield. How about the recruitment involves will give you
(39:45):
money to play quarterback for us whena lot of other teams won't at this
point in your career. Yeah,I would. I tend to feel the
same way. And it's really nota shot at Baker. It's more about
business. Well, he did playwell, Yeah, earned the money there.
Mike Evans help that right, Butour other team's viewing it the same
way. We want to bring Bakerin here to learn our offense, to
(40:06):
learn our players, paying this moneyto do it because he's the best way
for us to be great. TheBucks think it because he's already been there
and make the Bucks great again.I'm gonna have some changes because some of
the coaches that they lost, butnot I don't think anything that's going would
set him back. Let's say,but it's the same thing with Russell.
Walk me through the league and pointout all these teams. Now, the
Steelers would be one. Like,if you're the Steelers right now and the
(40:28):
Bucks say, on we screwed thisup. We're bringing Mike Evans back,
and Kyle Trask is our quarterback.Oops, okay, so Baker Mayfield's now
available quote unquote. But by theway, would the Steelers choose Baker over
Russell? Yes? Okay, soright now we walk through a few more
teams that might say, Hey Russellor Hey Baker, we know the Bucks
are going to give you three yearsninety million. What if we give you
(40:51):
ninety five and guarantee another five.I mean, he has a chance to
win in Pittsburgh. He has achance to stick it to the Browns as
well, but it's harder to Okay, that's like so far down the priority
list for him, first of all, but secondly, in a quarterback rich
I guess at least towards the firstten picks of this draft environment we're talking
(41:12):
about, to where you could moveup if you really wanted a guy with
the right deal, why would youtake that scenario over it? Yeah?
I wonder if Pittsburgh really can moveup. That's my personal thought. If
they move up, I don't knowhow they're gonna move up to get one
of the top three, and theymight move by the way, No,
but never done that. They havethe twentieth pick. If I guess they
(41:32):
could get worse if they trade wayup and this quarterback doesn't lead them to
a bunch of victories next year. But they're never bad, so whatever other
first, if it takes another first, if they're trying to get really high,
it would definitely take another first. But that other first is also going
to be bad, most likely becauseyour team is good. I think this
is all an exercise and futility.Russell Wilson's home I still do not have
figured. But Baker Millyfield's home,I think we can rest relatively easy that
(41:57):
this you know, their GM Ithink has a pretty good feel for his
roster. He's done a very goodjob for a number of years, and
he didn't he didn't make one movewithout knowledge about the other. They're gonna
resign Baker Mayfield. You know. It's crazy, though, and that's I
agree, and I think that's whatthey probably should do, because even though
Pittsburgh might look at Baker Mayfield andsay, okay, well, maybe he
could help us win games more thanthis guy could. That is not a
(42:21):
branch spaking new draft pick at thetop of this year's draft. If we
could even get there, which weprobably can't, Tampa Bay is gonna know
better what they already have, plusthe familiarity. But here's the thing,
Mike Evans two year deal when you'regonna turn thirty two at the end of
it, that's a risk in myopinion. Like he might, he may
very well put up the same eyepopping numbers he has, But why wouldn't
(42:45):
you go for a longer tenure dealwith more guarantee. I guess maybe you
couldn't get taking the risk? Areyou saying the players taking the risks?
Absolutely? Okay? Yeah, yes, agreed. I think this is a
it's a very expensive deal for theteam, but a smart one like you
could get. You could have probablylowered your asking figure per year but gotten
(43:05):
more years out of the Texans togo play with c. J. Stroud.
Well, I think that's a wildassumption, because, again Aaron Wilson
over the weekend reporting what I thoughtwould be the case. Anyway, the
Texans did not appear to be ateam that would be interested in his services
when and if, which is nownever he became a free agent. But
that's based on the eye popping numbershe was probably going to ask for.
Don't you think, Well, wouldyou pay him the contract. They just
(43:28):
gave him two years fifty two million, thirty five million guaranteed. If you
added a year to it, justto make it more likely a free agent
move, you're gonna give him threeyears. Doesn't that sound more friendly when
you're talking about signing a guy duringCJ. Stroud's rookie contract. My opinion
is there's no reason for this teamto spend that amount of money on a
wide receiver with what they already haveand what they don't. Have never been
(43:49):
in favor of adding Mike Evans,it has none of Kwon Barkley. I
kind of feel the same way,but it's a matter of what you.
I mean, they need to signa running back to me, maybe first
day, maybe both of them,And I think finally, I think because
Aaron said it, it's got anice little following. But I've been saying
for weeks I'm not against Saquan, but I'm much more favorable towards signing two
(44:09):
running backs, one of them beingDevin Singletary and the other one being Tony
Pollard. No, probably DeAndre Swift. Oh, that's right, you keep
You're a swift guy. You're aswifty I want to start calling you Ay
Texans Jersey with the last name ofSwift, Adorning the back would be in
play. If they sign him, they win a Super Bowl with him,
I'll buy one and then I'll callmyself a Swifty right here on this show,
(44:30):
guaranteed. Can't wait and won't haveto wait any longer for me to

by two lifelong Houston sports guys namedAdham talking Your Team series. Adam Clinton
(45:36):
and Adam Wexler are the A TeamA Our number two is underway here on
Sports Talk seven ninety. It isthe A Team wex Ac and Trey Campbell
filling in for the show Killer DanMatthews taking up until six o'clock tonight.
We've discussed a little bit about Astro'sspring training and specifically that of Justin Bartholomew.
(46:01):
You James Verlander. What's his middlenanny? It is? Yeah?
What is it again? It's avery popular running brand of shoe. Mmm.
Also the last name of a veryshort, blonde haired former Rocket who
then went on to coach in theNBA. Brooks. Yes, Brooks is
(46:22):
a running shoe. Brooks Shoes peoplerunning them. I mean I've heard of
Brookstone, which is a dress shoecasual. I thought that was the place
where you bought weird stuff, butit wasn't sharper image that could be.
Now I'm gonna now it's gonna botherme. Look Brookstone, right there in
the galley of Brookstone, in thismall Brookstone catalog, all the things you
(46:42):
have to have for the house Brookstonelooseite chair. I think you're right.
I think I jacked this up.You know how I know because when I
go to Brookstone's website, the firstthing I see is a sit back and
relax. Find the perfect Osaki massagechair for you. Let's just click and
see how much they're bending me overthe barrel for one of these. Oh.
(47:04):
Look, the Osaki Theramtic Flas massageSharon is marked down from seven thousand
dollars to a mere twenty one toninety nine, which is really twenty two
hundred. You're not fooling anybody.Yeah, very sky Mall catalog of them,
and the thing is, I wantone of these now? Do our
listeners know what sky Mall is?They should if they fly the Friendly Skies
(47:27):
now or twenty years ago, nowthey still have those. It's the thing
that goes in the thing next tothe barf bag, right, you mean
them of your seat, do youUnited or Southwest magazine? Yeah, but
it's called sky mall right. Okay, it's in all the airlines. Okay,
they got a monopoly on it,all right. So where are we
headed. We're headed to what theTexans are going to do, which is
by the time we sit down tomorrow, well, we'll already have been sitting
(47:50):
by for an hour at this point, and five minutes the Texans will have
franchised Jonathan Grenard. Well, threeo'clock tomorrow's when they believe it or not,
window does close. And today theKansas City Chiefs made sure that Legerious
Snead would not be going anywhere. He has been franchise tag as we was
(48:12):
reported last week, that was theirintention if they were not able to reach
a deal. Also means Chris Joneswill not be franchise tagged by that team
since they're using it on Snead.Again, not new news, but it
becomes official tomorrow. The Bengals alreadymade that announcement with t Higgins that wide
receiver will not be a free agent, but again they'll be negotiating with him.
The franchise tag will be on him. The opportunity, like was the
(48:35):
case last year with Lamar Jackson, and there's different tags. Non exclusive tag
is the one they used, sothose two players are on it. The
word today from Miami is their defensivetackle, Christian Wilkins will not have the
franchise tag placed on him, probablyafter Chris Jones, one of the if
not the most impactful defensive player thatcould be available. He obviously plays the
(48:58):
same position, so to speak onthe interior of your defensive line. How
old is he? He's not oldat all, So he's younger than Chris
Jones, significant who will be makingmuch more money. Uh. I think
that's probably fair to say, like, if much more, they're gonna be
two of the five highest paid defensivetackles after this offseason. Okay, so
if Nick Cassario goes out and signshim, I mean you're gonna be ecstatic
(49:22):
if you're a Texans fan. Eventhough it's not Chris Jones. Next year's
only year six. He was atwenty four year old rookie, so technically
he's much older than you would expectout of a sixth year player, but
he's basically done nothing but be onthe field. He's coming off. I
would think most people would grade hisseason out last year as his best and
most productive and most disruptive, whichalso kind of makes you wonder how and
(49:45):
why Miami would let him go.And the answer is they pay a lot
of other players a lot of money, and most of them on offense.
It makes it a little difficult forthem to make a contract for Wilkins work.
So that's one reason why. Butyeah, Wilkins being on the move
is pretty impactful to the off seatand it changes what is truly out there
and what the available talent is andhow you want to do it. Like,
(50:05):
the Texans have a billion different waysthey could go. We can spend
an entire show on they should signSaquon Barkley, DeAndre Swift, Josh Jakes,
or any running back. We've donethat with wide receivers from Ridley to
Evans to whomever else, and it'sno different for these There are players that
are going to make this team significantlybetter. There's no way they can go
through free agency this offseason in yourtwo of CJ. Stroud, off of
(50:28):
a division title, off of aplayoff victory, off of being in the
final eight, and not spend moneyon at least one impactful, high dollar
player. If it's internal, becauseI didn't say free agent, that could
mean they do go long term withJohn Gernad, I wouldn't consider franchise tagging
him significant commitment. It's significant toJohn. It would be a humongous pay
(50:52):
raise because remember this is a thirdround pick working off with that contract,
that's all he's been paid as anNFL player so far, going to get
at least seventeen million. If he'sfranchise tagged, he's going to get at
least twenty million, because it couldstill lead to more money. And if
he's on the open market, he'sprobably going to get in the neighborhood of
thirty five to forty guaranteed million onwhatever length deal. That is. Again
(51:13):
to go back to Evans deal, just so you're aware of two years,
fifty two million, thirty five millionguaranteed the reported numbers on that, and
when you get into the area ofone hundred and five hundred and twenty million
dollar contracts, which is what someof these players probably will be offered.
Well, now you're talking about dependingon position, you know, a forty
million dollars, fifty million dollars, potentially sixty million dollar guarantee, and then
(51:34):
that is huge. In my opinion, Jonathan Gernard is a player they should
want here. If you're trying towin immediately rather than trying to find some
other player to replace what he gaveyou, you take the risk two risks.
You want to take that risk,go ahead. The other risk is
will he provide you another healthy seasonor two or three. If it's a
(51:55):
long term deal, that is alsoa risk, Well recognize it. That's
that the one I would take.But that's the That's why though, I
think he's a no brainer for thefranchise tag because you don't have to make
the decision on Nico Collins for anotheryear, and which because you're going to
be in the same boat with bothof these guys next year if you do
use the franchise tag, but youget to make it a quote unquote prove
(52:19):
it year if you will. Asfar as from the health standpoint, which
I struggle with this because it's ait's a violent game. Literally, anybody
is one snap away from being donefor the year or their life. And
mean, well, I'm not sayingthey're gonna die. I'm just saying career
ending injury. Like if Alex Smithhad had his knee or his shin or
(52:43):
whatever it was ripped up the wayhe did, and then all the complications
younger in his career, that wouldhave been catastrophic. But that stuff can
happen. And if you're talking abouta defensive guy who plays in the interior,
I mean, he's just as asmuch a risk as anybody else.
So but again, like, okay, you want to prove you can stay
(53:04):
healthy and produce and be all thethings we want in a long term deal.
Here it is, And in themeantime, we can go out and
spend this money on all these otherguys if we want to. I mean,
to me, it's it's that you'respending the money on him. I
mean, how much could you givehim more than that? For one year?
If you're franchise tagging him, you'recommitting ninety eight percent of time much
(53:25):
is it twenty one for him?Yes, so the cap is two fifty
five, you're giving him twenty one. That's obviously a little bit less than
ten percent committed to him. Nowyou're down the road, like you said,
you have the same option. IfNiko Collins is not given an extension
this offseason, and there's a lotof people that feel differently on that.
And again, Aaron Wilson seemed tothink what he has heard and what we
(53:45):
all heard two different things. Whathe's also hearing versus what was said publicly,
that it sounds to him that theTexans are interested in maybe finding a
long term common ground with Nuco Collinsbefore he plays in that final year of
his four year rookie DAR, whichwould avoid both Grenard and Collins, let
alone anybody else, heading into nextoff season with only one tag for either
(54:08):
of them. Or again, therecould be an additional player that you're thinking
about. I'm not sure who thatmight be, but it's always something you
have to consider. And I don'tyou can say it because it's true.
Nick Cassario's never used the franchise tag. But it's totally irrelevant, no kidding.
Are you sure this terrible team neverrequired him to use a franchise tag
on a player. It's no indicationof his unwillingness to use it. It's
(54:30):
an indication of they didn't have anyplayers. They didn't have any good players
that were coming up for a contractthat they had to keep. Let me
ask you this, which one ofthese guys, would you feel more comfortable
giving a long term deal to rightnow, because we're kind of talking about
the same thing, aren't we,but for a shorter time and at a
position where I think you're in alittle bit less danger. I'm talking about
(54:51):
to prove it aspect I told youlast week, so I'll reiterate. The
prove it stuff for Nico Collins isout the window. It's been proofn That's
like saying Tank Dell's got to provethat he can stay on the field this
year. Uh. The injury thatknocked him out for the rest of the
season, to me was very fluky. It wasn't from a quarterback leading him
(55:12):
into a big hit. It wasn'tbeing tangled up in two players meeting him
and smashing him. But he alsowas hurt additionally previously this season when he
had a concussion, so that hemissed time for two different reasons injury wise.
And his size is not changing, just like Xavier Worthy was telling everything,
he's going to gross six inches.Xavier Worthy, who by now I
think you all know, ran veryvery fast at the combine, even faster
(55:35):
than a fast player as he wasexpected to run. But he said this
after the fact he said, Oh, by the way, I was one
hundred and sixty five pounds during theyear too, Because now people are putting
him in Tanks category of this sky, but we're so worried about his size.
Well, he plays he's that's thesize he's been playing at. It's
the same thing with Tank. Thisis who I am and the size I
play at. Yes, moving upto a new level the NFL versus college
(55:55):
football presents its dangers, But thequestion you asked, I'm fine with the
risk taking on going long term withNico. I think at some point,
when you have players that can play, and when you have a quarterback that
you can win with, you justhave to commit to guys at some point.
And I think Demiko was not lyingwhen he said it the way he
said it. They have intel outthe wazoo about players in their own locker
(56:20):
room. It's less of a guessinggame. They know these guys. They
know more about them and how they'regoing to perform for them. Again,
barring injury, than hitting the freeagent market overpaying for a player you know
less about other than well, weall know. I watch them on Sundays
and Mondays and Thursdays and Saturdays. All right, when we come back signature
segment on a Monday, as perusual, The Good, the Bad,
(56:40):
and the Ugly. We'll get thatto you next. Now the good,
oh good, the bad that's notgood, and the ugly don't make me
good With the eighteen we're showing youthe good the bad signature segment time here
on a Monday edition of the show. That means the back from the weekend
(57:04):
edition of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I'll get you
started with the good. Trey willwrap things up with the ugly. You
guys can figure out where ac fitsin. I'll take the good that unfortunately
actually has a little piece of bad, which is actually major. But the
good is the University of Houston Cougar'sbasketball team winning at OU on a buzzer
(57:28):
beater essentially from Jamal Shed. Hehit the shot with what was point one
seconds left on the clock. Theyended up putting a couple more points on
the clock, but Manuel Sharp tippedthe long pass away and there was no
shot attempt from Ou so Shed whohad missed a three foot runner, but
off the hands of Juwan Roberts intohis hands and he hit the game winner
(57:49):
eighty seven eighty five, most pointsthe Cougars have allowed all season. But
they win their seventh straight game. They've won twelve of their last thirteen or
better, yet, they've won twentysix of their last twenty nine, which
is the entire season. They're twentysix and three. Why don't he say
that more? Yep? Well, when you have a record like this and
they are the only team in thecountry that does Pexson's won ten of seventeen
(58:13):
this year, yep, or theirlast seventeen, I should say, well,
what you would do that You wouldhave said they've won ten of their
last fifteen because they lost the firsttwo. Oh, that's true. We
would want to make it sounds twentysix out of twenty nine is about as
strong as you could hope for. They have one game remaining on the road,
one game remaining at home Wednesday nightat the road finale at UCF.
Lower in the standings and obviously Kansasabout as low as Kansas has ever been
(58:37):
in the Big twelve standings. That'swho comes to Fortita Center to wrap up
the season. That'll be the lastvictim of the season over at Fortita Center
as they close out another undefeated homeschedule. Jamal shed also on the final
five players on the watch list forthe Bob Coosey Award Best point Guard in
America. He will win, Ithink he might win, and I personally
(58:57):
think he should win Player of theYear in College Basketball, and he will
undoubtedly be a first team All American. Unfortunately, bigger picture, their hopes
were winning the NCAA title took apretty big turn for the worse. Yeap
Jojo Tugler had not played in UHdid not play against OU, had not
played obviously since the game before that, been dealing with a foot injury,
(59:21):
but now so severe the stress fracture. Coach Sampson acknowledged today that they're going
to have his season end and thisweek he will have surgery. They actually
postponed the surgery and then rescheduled thesurgery for a day where the coaches could
be with him before that surgery, after the Wednesday game and before their game
on Saturday, so that's when Tuglerwill have the surgery. He was one
of their three bigs that played ina very tight rotation. The usually used
(59:45):
just eight. He is the lonebig off the bench, so the looking
elsewhere sat a laugh. Probably theplayer that takes that. But if you've
watched the successful Cougar's runs over thelast three years, there's usually a trio
a couple times a quarte of bigs, and they get all the minutes.
They're the guys that he trusts upfront. They're somewhat interchangeable in some seasons,
(01:00:06):
and Tuggler's first year there absolutely tremendoushelp off the bench. Not because
he's given them, you know, twelve and ten every night, far from
it, but defensively and doing whatthey need from their bigs. Remember Jeris
Walker went in the first round ofthe draft with lottery pick last year.
It's not because he was going fortwenty and ten. And I'm not comparing
those players, but statistic looking atthese statistics of those particular players does them
(01:00:29):
a disservice. Watch the games, watch what they mean, and losing a
player of that caliber to what theytry to do, it's a huge knock.
It's a huge hurdle they'll have toovercome to win all those tournament games
in a row, all those dayswhere they're playing two games in three days
each of the first two weekends inthe tournament. Hopefully and just an unfortunate
reminder, they lost a different rotationplayer way back earlier in the season when
(01:00:52):
Terrence Arsenal went down for the year. So two players who would have been
in their eight or nine man rotationall year long won't be a part of
their tournament team. They wrap upthe regular season, like I said,
head to the Big Twelve tournament, presumably as the number one seed. They
haven't yet clinched it yet. Theywill. They can win out and they
will have it. Iowa State losesa game and they would have it.
They also could win a tiebreaker. It's basically based on how you did against
(01:01:15):
the other teams on your way downthe standings. Who finished third. If
i was State in Houston had differentrecords against them than that team that had
the better one would be the teamthat would draw the number one seed because
Iowa State and you have h splittheir regular season games. All right,
I got the bad and I knoweverybody was all about the congratulations this weekend
(01:01:36):
for Lebron James. He's just thegreatest things in sliced bread. He went
into the weekend as the NBA's alltime leading scorer. He came out of
the weekend the same with a fourin front of his tally, and everybody
was talking about that, which isthe most Lebron thing ever because it came
in a loss. Reigning Western ConferencePlayer of the Week. Oh yeah,
that's another thing that really matter.Yeah, hey, did you have another
(01:01:58):
All Star appearance this year? Thatwas equally as an impressive to me and
the grand scheme of thing more thananybody ever. He's just the best,
isn't he. He must be betterthan Michael Jordan. It's funny you can't.
You can't say that he's good withoutknocking him down and saying he's not
Michael. Why can't he just beLebron? Well, because in this case
I can't wait for it, becausein this case, Michael was on record
as saying, if you get ridof my head, coach, I won't
(01:02:22):
play for you again. And Lebrondoes the exact opposite. He's on how
many coaches now that he's literally probablyhad fired. The latest is Darvin Ham
And if you don't believe, oh, he's about to be though, if
you don't believe me, maybe you'llbelieve Lakers insider Anthony Irwin, because according
to him, Lebron basically does whathe wants no matter what. This is
(01:02:49):
uh via Irwin's article. He willfrequently over frequently overrule his coach's play,
calls to run his own play, and sometimes instructs his teammates to ignore his
coach. This is a quote. He sits in the huddle, gets his
rest or water, rolls his eyesas Ham speaks Darvin Ham, and waits
for the huddle to break. Thisis a source close to the situation to
(01:03:12):
Anthony Irwin. If Ham ever doesdraw up a play, as soon as
the huddle breaks, James will telleveryone else on the court with him f
all that and call a play ofhis own. I just, I mean,
I know everybody. There's the contingencythat thinks he's the greatest thing ever,
and you're not going to convince themotherwise because he's been doing this for
(01:03:32):
twenty years and he's scored all thesepoints. And then you have people who
have brains in their heads. Thisguy is a very great individual talent who
is one of the most toxic personalitiesin the history of sports. Goodness,
gracious, it's not like a fordebate. He is he is? You
(01:03:52):
don't think he is. I wouldnever have thought to say that, No,
you don't think Lebron James has supertoxic traits. So he like because
he scores a lot of points andother guys don't that have done the same
thing causing like controversy or disputes withina locker room, nobody else, Or
he's not like everybody else. No, he's like everybody else. He just
scores more and rebounds more and assistsmore. Do you mean he's like,
(01:04:15):
like, give me an example.I don't know anybody who's ever been a
disruptor in a locker room and makesit so bad that people are like,
I got to get out of here, or coaches don't want to coach there,
or I mean who the coach?Like? Sometimes he's today's NBA player
basically, so he's playing he's doingplaying the game that everybody plays. No,
because I don't think it's always beenthis way, And I think he
ushered in this era of this stuffgoing on more frequently in that that's how
(01:04:39):
he's toxic. So he's gotten MikeBrown fired, He's gotten David Blatt fired.
David Blatt doesn't count. Well, see now, how many of these
coaches has he gotten fired? TheDuke count then how many coaches? Yeah,
but you just said what I'm saying, how many of these coaches?
Well, why what's the big dealif David Black got fired or do we
(01:04:59):
think that was a mistake? Probablynot. Then then why are we blaming
my principles? My principles, becausehow many players have even had this many
coaches with you? Like, theonly reason he didn't probably get Eric spolsterra
fired is because pat Riley told himto go bleep himself. Well, from
I guarantee you he wanted to afterthe first season, his first fifteen seasons
in the league, if you didn'twant to play with Lebron, then you
(01:05:21):
weren't interested in winning his all ofhis years in LA definitely should be looked
at as different. Now their goalis winning, he is trying to win
championships. But the first fifteen years, especially after the first few, when
he was able to carry a teamon his back to the playoffs and to
the finals, I should say,and then they won the East eight straight
years his team, whichever team itwas, This is different. Playing for
(01:05:44):
Lebron doesn't mean you're going to winanymore. Playing for Lebron means you get
to wear the Purple and gold. They're not a favorite. They're not expected
to win the title. They're noteven expected to advance even one day.
Might well, they'll probably make theplayoffs because the team behind them is six
back. Yeah, I believe.I thought it was. There's one team,
Utah are the same. Utah iswhat I was thinking of, so
(01:06:04):
it's different. He gets Darvin Hamfired. To me, that means two
things. Darvin Ham he should wanthim because he gets to do whatever he
wants, so that should be anideal coach for Lebron. And two,
it clearly isn't Darvin Ham. Theydon't have the players to win with and
he's one of them. This isthe the you know, and Anthony Davis
(01:06:26):
is another well Jordan in Washington.I don't think it's a very good comparison,
But I don't think he was asgood a player then or offensive player
as Lebron is now. I thinksecond go round with Doug Collins. Yeah,
I think Lebron James is still oneof the ten toughest stops offensively in
the league. But he didn't playdefense anymore. He hasn't played defense almost
at all five years later. It'scertainly not the last few and I think
(01:06:47):
it's why he continues to post awesomenumbers. Anthony Davis continues to post offensive
numbers. He goes rim protector, but they don't defend at all, and
so these games result in high scoringlosses, which is exactly what's going to
happen to them in the playoffs. One twenty four to one fourteen over the
weekend to the defending champs, Ibelieve was the final, well not even
(01:07:09):
the most laughable Western Conference team ofthe weekend that went to Golden State.
Oh my gosh, why do youmention that? Yeah, we end with
the ugly hu the Golden State Warriors, and maybe one of the worst losses
I think, the third biggest lossin their franchise's history to the Boston Celtics.
They lost by fifty two points.I love it couldn't happen to a
(01:07:31):
better bunch of guys. They barelyplayed any of their starters. I think
that their starters played what at mosttwenty minutes. Jonathan Kaminga played twenty had
two, three and six, andSteph Curry played seventeen minutes had won three
and four. The rest of thegame was filled out by their second unit.
(01:07:54):
Of Lester kenyonees, Gary Payton Juniorand the eight Jerome Robinson. Look
at Kurr earning that extension A twentytwenty four first on the A Team,
our first mention of Lester canonez basketballplayer and the last Golden State War here
on March fourth. Here that wasthe guy that hosts that show what Would
(01:08:15):
You Do? What Would You Do? Show? You mean when he sits
at the table at the restaurant wherethe people are being mean to the waitress
or vice versa, the patron.Yes, I was actually John. His
name is John canonas very good pullthough, Tray. Here's what I got
out of Trey's ugly because you knowI love the numbers. There have only
been four games this season where aplayer has attempted nine or more three pointers
(01:08:40):
and missed them all. There haveonly been four games this year where a
player has done that, only fourinstances. Steph Curry's done it twice.
Two of the four instances are StephCurry's oh for nine and as Trey said,
he finished with four points a reboundfor I've been saying for years to
do with him. They installed thisstupid defense and got themselves bl out.
(01:09:00):
They were down forty plus in thefirst half. Yeah, it's time to
blow that team up. When didSteph win finals MVP? Never, I
don't think. Okay, just makingsure you Gadala won finals MVP, He
sure did. I mean, howcould dream not win Finals MVP? Every
player who has ever won it,you would probably say that except for Andre.
The years that Shaq and Kobe playedtogether, one of them had to
(01:09:20):
not win it the other. Well, Steph's playing with other Hall of famers,
isn't he But he's the best pointguard of all time. I mean,
that's that's what I keep being totallyridiculous. That's why I keep saying
he's over rated, saying things likethat he didn't win finals MVP. I
know they won four of them, and it does seem odd and it is
hard to believe. But it's notmy fault. The moronic voters gave it
(01:09:41):
to Andrea Iguidala, and it's notmy fault that he's a two pony that
keeps being shoved down our throats bythe greatest point guard of all time,
because it's not true. He's noteven a top ten all time NBA player.
Stop saying it. I think thegreatest point guard of all time is
on that Oyers team. But itain't Steph Curry. Chris Paulow, Oh
wow, that's the most gen zthing you've ever said, Trey. Thank
(01:10:04):
you. You're welcome, all right. When we come back. We will
continue here on a Monday edition ofThe A Team. There actually is more
NBA News Local Variety. We finallyhad the mystery revealed to us late Saturday
night with the Houston Rockets. I'llexplain when we come back. I'm gonna
(01:10:25):
explain to you about UVC Power SportsTractors and Outdoors. The good news is
we've been telling you the same thingfor a long time about finding those phenomenal
Kawasaki side by sides at UVC PowerSports Tractors and Outdoors, your one stop
shop for all your outdoor equipment needs, especially when you're talking about those Kawasaki
vehicles, all sorts of inventory rightthere in Alvin Foya, specifically the one
(01:10:45):
you hopefully had a chance to seeat the NRG Center over the past handful
of days. That's the Kawasaki Ridge. Plenty of them in inventory right now
on site over at UVC Power SportsTractor and Outdoors. The same vehicle feed
with Stone Cold Steve Austin in theSuper Bowl commercial, which of course is
business in the front, party inthe back. You're gonna have a great
time behind the wheel of the KawasakiRidge x R HVAC side by side,
(01:11:10):
and you'll get a chance to driveit right there on site if you head
on out to Alvin and you enjoytheir test track facility right there at their
massive facility, get to enjoy everythingthat Kawasaki has to offer. We send
you there online at UVC one stopdot com because it truly is your one
stop shop for all your outdoor equipmentneeds, or of course via phones at
two eight one eight two four elevenninety eight. That's two eight one eight
(01:11:31):
two four eleven ninety eight. Yougot any questions about that Kawasaki Ridge,
that's how you take care of it, or you're right there on site in
Alvin for business in the front, party in the back with the Kawasaki Ridge.
Because Stone Cold Steve Austin said,so it is the eight team here
on Sports Talk seven ninety talked aboutUH Mike Evans re upping with the uh
(01:11:55):
Tampa Bay Bucks, which means,I mean you're probably more likely than not
at this point to bring Baker Mayfieldback if you're Tampa Bay. I mean,
it's not like the division is justgoing to be hotly competitive. I
mean, I'm assuming Atlanta adds agood quarterback. Competitive, just not in
the thirteen and four range five ranging. They are going to probably be the
(01:12:16):
worst division in football. Again, could be because the AFC eas just has
the Patriots been now, every teamin and there is bad. It seems
likely that the Souths could easily producethe number four seed in each conference,
just as they did this last year. Would that be the Texans? It
certainly could be. If you don'twin eleven, you're almost locked in to
(01:12:36):
be the four sing first play schedule, right, So I'm not necessarily expecting
a huge win total. I expecta playoff team and they'll be very prepared
for the playoffs when they get therefor what could be a bunch of rematches.
Okay, so that's two players andwe think are going back to their
own team, One official Mike Evansand one unofficial Baker. I can't decide
(01:12:59):
on on Chris Donaldson, Okay,Chris Jones, Chris Jones, I'm sorry,
I'm mixing my names up. Ican't decide on Chris Jones. I
feel like, even with today's news, the fact that it's a non exclusive
tag makes me feel like they're gonnatrade Snead and keep Jones. Yeah,
the non exclusive tag. He broughtthat up earlier to re explain similar to
(01:13:20):
what happened last year in Baltimore withLamar Jackson, the opportunity for other teams
to negotiate with him then potentially needto work out a deal to do it
was what was on the table, and no team was willing to do it,
and ultimately he got a really gooddeal from Baltimore and led them to
the conference title game at home thatthey lost, and Lagarious Snead he also
played in that very same game histeam won. Then they went to the
(01:13:42):
Super Bowl and they also won.I can't envision a scenario where neither of
them are chiefs, and if nobodyput together a deal for a lightning fast
superstar now two time MVP Lamar Jackson, I don't envision a team doing something
for Lagarious Sneak, even though it'sfar less costly, so it's not really
comparing apples to apples. I'll admitthat I envision this resulting in Lugarious Sneed
(01:14:06):
probably playing for the Chiefs, andI honestly think it'll be for the foreseeable
future. If it doesn't work outthis year, eventually it'll work out.
It too good of a player atthe point in his career where he is,
But that means Jones goes elsewhere, doesn't it? Yeah, probably,
and you've got the oppotive, butit's it's likely you have the opposite expectation
of me. Then with the Chiefs, well, yeah, I mean I
(01:14:27):
look at their defense and it isdifficult to overcome it. But I look
at what they've been able to do, and I think we don't even recognize
it, probably as much as weshould, because I've talked about their ability
to draft so well, and mostof that has been you know, some
of those replacement players on the offensiveline, like Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith,
and I'm just overwhelmingly impressed by whatthey were able to do. But
(01:14:47):
it's actually also true defensively, inwhat Brett Veach has been able to do
to make up for players that theyotherwise would have lost. So you look
at what they have defensively and howThey recently acquired them on Karl Loftis.
Although he's not a tackle, he'san end. He was their first round
pick two years ago. He's awesome. They have players that I think can
(01:15:09):
slide right in and I think they'llprobably do the same. They have holes,
but they're not really. They don'tstrike me as holes like other teams.
They know what they need. They'regonna use a top draft pick,
whether it's the first or the secondor even the third, on a defensive
tackle when Chris Jones is playing elsewhere, and by week sixteen or week five
of next year, he'll be agood player on the interior of their defense
(01:15:30):
and they'll be leading the division. And I have that much confidence in what
they do. And personally, Ithink their back end, even with a
very good McDuffie, a second firstround pick they had in the twenty two
draft, as the best team inthe AFC, he's been great. Justin
Reid was a very good addition whenthey signed him. But I think if
they lost Lugerius sneed, they'd bereally not very well situated on the back
(01:15:53):
end. I think they might beable to get away with it up front,
because I don't even it's not likeyou can't run on the Chiefs.
I think Spags help put together ascheme that really really worked, maybe covered
up some of the personnel that theydidn't quite have. We are we can
now officially say next month, we'llfind out what all is going to happen
with regards to the draft and freeagency. Well before that, yeah,
(01:16:14):
exactly, Yeah, free agency essentiallyopens in a week. The eleventh is
the The description of it is comical. They basically say, y oh,
you want to talk to players whenyou're not supposed to, go right ahead,
It's totally okay, go ahead, you can do it, and then
two days later you can officially announceit you've the deal that you've come to
an agreement on. So the eleventhand the thirteenth for those tomorrow obviously,
(01:16:35):
is the franchise tag deadline. Aswe sit here today, there's only two
players with it, with Sneed beingone, and earlier it was the wide
receiver in Cincinnati T Higgins. Idon't know that there's going to be a
whole lot of use with it.I think we'll probably have three or four
more players, which is a lownumber overall. Could be a surprise where
maybe a kicker gets it or somebodylike that, but that won't happen here
(01:16:56):
in Houston, even though he's afree agent. I don't think the Texans
are considering it with any of theirfree agents other than Gernar, and I
don't believe they can even use itwith Kayimi. But there are a host
of free agents that they want back, and there's only so many ways to
do it, and there's only somany again, replacement quality players to do
it with. You're taking a chanceon a draft pick, obviously, because
you don't even know who's going tobe there when you pick, or if
(01:17:18):
you then are compelled to deal upor deal down. If your nick,
you're probably dealing in some form orfashion. And if you spent nine million
dollars on Sheldon Rankins last offseason, you're probably gonna have to spend at least
that much or in that neighborhood ofas much for somebody else. And is
that player even as good? Whynot just sign Rankins to a new deal?
(01:17:38):
All right? When we come back, I promise the update you guys
were looking for on the Houston Rockets, the mystery I was talking about to
round out the four o'clock hour. We've got football at five coming up at
the top of the hour in caseyou missed it, and a whole lot
more still on a Monday edition ofThe A Team, winding down the four
o'clock hour. Here on a Mondayedition of The A Team. So I
(01:18:02):
was talking about this on the postgameshow the other night as the Rockets knocked
off the Suns in Phoenix, secondtime in three tries against that team in
a five game stretch. You heardthat correctly, that they were able to
beat the Suns. We found outafter the game, almost randomly, because
ima Udoka just kind of casually mentionedit in his postgame presser. Oh yeah,
(01:18:26):
By the way, Tarry Easton's havingsurgery today on Monday, and he's
done for the year. I thinkFagan knew an update was now in their
hands, and he asked him,do you have an update on Tari?
He goes yes, okay. Iwas asked multiple times on and off the
air, I might add, what'sthe injury? And I asked that question
multiple times. It sounds like hehad a growth on his knee. Benign.
(01:18:47):
That's a very important word to use. Yep. That was then exacerbated
the pain that he was suffering becauseof it, because it got hit at
one point and that then he justdecid to have it removed, and because
of where it is and all thatkind of stuff that causes this to be
a four month recovery time, whichputs him well on track to be back
(01:19:09):
and ready to go next year.I just would not have guessed that all
of this time and all these gamesmissed, that would that's what it would
have been about. I mean,it's not definitely not good news that he
basically had a second season, whichis a huge growth season non existent.
There was you know, only ahandful of games twenty some odd games will
end up playing this year missing theremainder of the season. Something that was
(01:19:30):
pre existing. This is, youknow, the growth. They were aware
of that, he was aware ofit, but I had not been given
him enough trouble over any other portionof his career until as you said,
as Ema said, when it washit. It is just causing him to
be not one hundred percent and thepain tolerance because of the inflammation, he
just couldn't continue to play through itwithout addressing it. And I think that
(01:19:53):
they really never came to that realizationand maybe didn't have you know, it's
not as easy as we think itis, even with the best doctors looking
at it. That's why he wason a third and fourth doctor and a
third and fourth you know set ofimaging, which Amy had mentioned right before
they went on this last three gameroad trip. And that's the answer which
I think at this point the seasonwe'd kind of assumed, even though we
(01:20:14):
did not know what the actual problemwas, this might be the ultimate result
is that he would not play againthis season. And hopefully this is a
problem that no longer impacts him,but it certainly impacts them this year.
And it sounds like I have unbelievablebelief and how good a player he is,
but I don't have any doubt. And it doesn't make me, you
know, shudder to say it.There's five or six more wins that they
(01:20:38):
have this year if he's out thereplaying well. I don't know if people
think that's too much or too little, or if it's ridiculous. He's just
one guy who comes off the bench, but just the way he plays and
the way that what they miss.Oh we just didn't come out with enough
energy here, Oh we get him. We didn't hit the offensive glass hard
enough. We didn't get out andrun and finish enough. You know,
we weren't able to defend as wellon the perimeter or on the interior.
(01:20:59):
All the things that he does thathas nothing to do with can he beat
this guy off the dribble, Canhe hit a three? Can he hit
a shot in the lane? Andit's none of those things. He always
finds a way without them ever quoteunquote going to him. It's no problem
for him to get thirteen, fifteen, seventeen points a night off the bench
because he's always going to find hisway to the basket. He's always going
to find his way to finish someof the things that he does. They
(01:21:20):
have found a player that does thingssimilarly. That's a Men Thompson, who
is an incredible offensive rebounder, getsalmost all of his points off of things
in the lane and recognizes that that'swhere he needs to play. But it
leaves you with a little bit ofOkay, well, what do we have
next year? You probably have StevenAdams and you probably have Tarry Easton,
two players who meant almost nothing tothis year's team. They're rotation players.
(01:21:44):
They're getting twenty plus minutes a night. What is it that you're after in
free agency? And the other questionmark is the same one that's always been
Now it's just a little bit differentrecipe for what you're finding in the stew
Like, I don't even want tosay, well, did the real Jalen
Green show up, because it's ridiculousthat was two games. He does this
for ten games, he does forevery game the rest of the season.
I don't even think people would beconvinced, Okay, this is who he
(01:22:06):
is. It was just a goodstretch of games. There's too much on
the other side of it, andI don't want to say that. Immediately
after he played arguably his best gameof the season, both mentally by Bradley
Beal and physically by Suns. Hewas great. He was one of the
reasons they got the big lead, and he was one of the reasons they
kept the big lead. He wasfantastic and all the way around making shots
(01:22:27):
makes him look good for one forsure, But the basketball that he played.
You know why was Bradley Beal soticked off because Jalen Green was defending
him? Because Jalen Green was makingit hard for him. I mean,
you don't usually have an out ofbounds play that is okay, bial hits
you in the face two times andthen tries to pass it in because that's
what he did, and Jalen didn'thave any reason to back down, and
(01:22:47):
he didn't. He got a veteranplayer to basically lose his mind. I
don't mean he's crazy, but helost his mind enough to get ejected from
the game. This was the rockIt's our night and day team. If
he's efficient with his shooting, ifit doesn't take thirty shots to get thirty
points, if it doesn't take fifteenthrees to make four, then they're in
(01:23:09):
a pretty good position. If hecan handle that part of his game.
It's just obviously silly to say, yeah, thirty four points tonight, I
expect it. I'm curious and I'veactually I'd actually like to reach out to
the Rockets about this. When youhear benign great and it was to be
you know, particular benign growth onhis left shinbone. I'm just dying to
(01:23:31):
know if this is a lipoma. And I'm the only reason I say that,
and I know some of you listeningmight know what I'm talking about.
That is the most typical benign growththat you know, presue a lot of
men actually suffer from. But there'snothing to it. I have them.
That's why I'm I'm wondering about thisbecause it doesn't necessarily do anything, but
(01:23:55):
it can be painful, you know, considering where it's located in any given
time, if it's near a kneeor a joint or something like that,
if it's smaller versus a bigger one. Actually sometimes those are more painful.
So I'm just I'm wondering if that'swhat this is, or if it's something
completely different. It's it's just different. It's not something I was expecting them
to say, especially when you considerhow much time he has missed. But
(01:24:18):
that's the verdict, and unfortunately thatmeans no more Tarr Easton here in twenty
twenty three, twenty four, butagain hopefully good to go for the upcoming
NBA season and be interesting to seethe team that's around him, because I
do think he'll be a part ofthings and we'll look forward to him getting
and making the full recovery. We'vegot Football at five coming up next to
(01:24:39):
start the third and final hour ofa Monday edition of the Eight Team as
per usual. We'll do that whenwe come back. Adam Clinton and Adam
Wefler are the eight team. Ay, you're right, A fucking football five
o'clock some five o'clock football. Professionalfootball in America is a special game.
(01:25:15):
Football at five is underway as westart the five o'clock hour. As per
usual, I'll give you a choicepro or college, so we can do
both here. That's the answer, both, But which one do you want
to do? First? We'll startwith the guys trying to become one.
Okay. I am so on boardwith something that Johnny Manzel said over the
(01:25:38):
weekend that I never thought I'd bethis on board with something he did,
but I totally agree. And it'sinteresting because he feels like he's in the
news more lately over the past.I don't know when did the documentary come
out. That was a few monthsback. Yeah, and then you know,
he recently was back in the newsagain. And now I was playing
(01:26:00):
celebrity softball over at Minute May Parkin the news, hanging out with Cactus
Jacket Foundation. Yeah, sat downwith Club shay Sha. That's right.
Which was the funny thing about thatwas you got all the stuff you thought
you were going to get in thedocumentary from the Club Shashay interview, But
that's neither here nor there, asour own Matt Thomas would say. And
now he's back in the news again, and this is my favorite. This
(01:26:23):
is absolutely my favorite. So onSaturday he informed everyone people that he the
twenty twelve Heisman Trophy winner, willnot attend the annual Heisman Trophy ceremony until
the NCAA returns Reggie Bush's trophy, which was stripped from him following in Cuba
(01:26:44):
sanctions. I can't help but readthe headline associated with one of the articles
that was written about this topic andlaugh. For the two people that are
supporting Bush and his quest if thereis one to get that Heisman rightfully turned
to him. Manzielle is one ofthem, and the other is Rick Patino,
so a massive cheat and a hugescoundrel, also a cheat. Those
(01:27:09):
are the two people that are backingand showing support for Bush the way Manzel
does that. I don't know howmuch weight he carries, but he's a
Heisman Trophy winner that takes part inthis and it's a pretty commendable stand to
take for him not to attend becauseit's it's a pretty big deal. It's
it's well, some people debate whoshould have won the award in any given
year, and you know, itturned into a quarterback award and things like
(01:27:30):
that. The magnitude, the notorietyit is, it's pretty much in a
category by itself, making All Pro, making All NBA, winning an MVP
in any particular major pro sport.I just don't think it carries as much
weight winning the Heisman Trophy. It'sjust it's the best. It's arguably the
greatest award to win. And theexclusivity of the club is what's one of
(01:27:56):
the things that's cool about, Likethe Hall of Fame and Andre Johnson,
it's just happened. It's super exclusive. Except the Heisman Trophy is even more
exclusive by about you know, eightypercent more exclusive. You only have so
many seasons of college football we have. We're pushing close to four hundred Pro
Football Hall of Famers andres in thethree seventies among the new entrants and all.
(01:28:16):
That's great, but it's super exclusive. So for one of the Heisman
Trophy winers, whoever it might be, maybe, I mean, I don't
think guys are hugely in support ofJohnny's life and life choices, but they
may feel compelled to say, youknow what, Johnny has a point.
I'm also not going to. I'malso not going to. And when that
happens, that's the kind of thingthat lessens the event itself. When fewer
(01:28:41):
it's a big deal. When theyall go on stage, it's a huge
deal. It's cool, and maybethis is something it could be done.
And I tend to agree that heshould. I we know this by now.
I don't think he deserved to winthe award. I don't think he
was the best player in college football. And I was extremely disappointed at how
lopsided the vote was because Vince Youngwas better than him that year. I
thought that was the Iron has zeroto do with this. He won the
(01:29:05):
award rightfully, so they voted forhim. He was eligible to be voted
for. I'd actually like to seehim get it back. How important that
is to him In years that havegone by, at least it seems more
important to him each year that goesby. How many Highsman Trophy winners have
had their their trophy taken away?Is this is That's the only reason we
(01:29:29):
talked about this. Shut up.Answer the question. I answer the question.
I mean, I guess it's onlyUSC running backs. No, who
else? What's the list of players? Reggie Bush? That's it, right,
Okay? Orienthal killed two people andhas his. Uhh, yes he
does. But he didn't get moneyin the house and things. No,
he got two souls. He tookhim out of this this earth. They're
(01:29:54):
gone, they're not coming back.Yes, but his trophy is there.
Killer, but he's not looking forlooking for a trophy. He's got that.
Reggie Bush doesn't have his, buthe didn't kill anybody. OJ has
his. Did kill two people,of course, it's the only reason I
brought this up. You think Igive a crap what Johnny Mane says offus
(01:30:15):
about college or pro I totally justabsolutely these years just missed it completely.
Just you walked right into it.So as obvious telling you it's a Johnny
Manzel story. No it's not. It's an OJ story story. You can
follow it up. Tell me howOJ did at the combine back in the
late sixties, early seventies. That'swhat he did. He laughed at his
(01:30:38):
interviews. So what's your philosophy, what's your thought on this year's sc predicted
projected number one pick. He metwith the media, he met with teams.
He's right. Thing he neglected todo the medicals, which is it's
never basically never happened before. Buthe acknowledged he will do medicals for the
individual teams as they request when hegoes on team interviews moving forward. But
(01:31:01):
he neglected to do the medical partof the evaluations at the combine, citing
I don't really feel the need togo through medicals over and over and over
again here, although he could havegone through one medical and said just share
it with everybody, could have justsay, gone through medicals with the medicals
when he wants to do his medicals. But that's what this is about,
right, So he is the presumedtop pick, and if he's not the
(01:31:23):
top pick, then either somebody's givinga haul for him in some way,
shape or form. He's the toppick. Well, see that's where some
people are not some people. Someof these people, the people that are
covering the game and covering the combineNFL writers, it's almost inevitable some editor
is asking them to or they feelcompelled to. I gotta figure out a
(01:31:45):
way to make some make this astory I don't think they're like out of
bounds. But even reading it,here's a story written about buyer beware.
Whether it's the Bears or a teamthat trades up, here are the things
that have to you have to questionCaleb Williams about can't he handle his emotions?
You know, he checked out ofan interview post game, would not
do it after a loss. Hewas crying in his mom's arms after this
(01:32:08):
game. You know, he didn'tdo his medicals here and they're go,
this bad, this bad x redx red x red x red flag,
Oh my gosh. And then therest of the article says despite all that,
he's likely to still be the numberone pick, Like, you can't
even convince yourself. You're the writer. You're telling us he's got too many
red flags to be drafted number one. And then at the end you said,
but he's going number one. Imean, at the end of the
(01:32:28):
day, you would have to.I mean, there's so much that would
have to go wrong or be wrongwith you. I don't even think he
could flub interviews at this point unlesssome indicator of they asked me, if
you know what we you know, some teams really did a good job this
weekend again of taking you inside theirlittle suite, players that are being brought
in, what they're asked to doand and exactly. You know, here,
we're gonna put a play up onthe board. In ten minutes from
now, we're gonna ask you torecall what we put up there. You
(01:32:50):
know, we want to know howyou ran this offense and what your responsibilities
were here. I mean, hewould really have to fall in his face
well in those literal football instances, which does to me coincide with what you
see on tape. You can't justtake that blindly. You do want to
see what kind of understanding and underin these so called pressure situations. But
nothing that happened this weekend to meknocked him down. But I still agree
(01:33:14):
with this point of view, andit's the one I had going in.
They should have all done it.All three guys at the top should have
thrown because it just opens the doorfor other teams to get interested in the
other quarterbacks. Michael Pennix was unreal. He's gonna be drafted in the first
round because of what he did thisweekend interviews and on fields and that and
McCarthy probably improved his stock by theAlso, how good can he look against
(01:33:34):
you? Like you're throwing out thereyou're better than him? Right, Well,
show it and you're gonna keep otherteams from considering. Hmm, well
maybe I should take McCarthy over you. I don't think that's gonna happen,
but it can't happen if you outand blow them away. Unlike pro Da
Stiller on the Horizon. Yeah, and unlike the Heisman Trophy story. That
is exactly why I wanted to getto this story, because that's that's the
(01:33:59):
point of this. Those guys arewhat they're they're they're not in doubt to
be first rounders necessarily. I meanmaybe some of them are, but probably
not. They're they're gonna be taken. But improving your stock is good for
those guys. Caleb has the luxuryof not having to do that, and
that's why he did what he didbecause he could. So what's different so
(01:34:19):
Caleb is is last year there wasno Caleb Williams. Is that accurate?
I don't know. Depends on whoyou talk to. Okay, well,
then what Bryce Young was talked aboutin CJ. Stroud throw? Why did
Anthony Richardson throw? Because people thoughtthat CJ. Stroud's cognitive test was he
was an idiot. I mean thingslike that were happening. I mean he
doesn't have to go on the fieldto do He can just go to his
(01:34:41):
pro day and don't see the samething with these you know, Drake may
and and Jayden Daniels. Why notCJ threw But but Caleb Williams was talked
about, in part by myself asa guy who was worth waiting on for
this year last year, and nobodywas taught. Now again, when a
year from now, or let's tenyears from now, you look back,
CJ. Stroud may very well bewhat everybody's saying, Kayleb Williams is about
(01:35:05):
to be. And we're saying thiseven more so I think last offseason.
And I don't know if you everput all this together regarding the Panthers deal,
No, anybody not you specifically,if Panthers straighted up from nine to
number one, Rice, what didthey literally give up Caleb Williams. Yeah,
they literally gave up their twenty twentyfour first round pick, which is
the number one overall pick in thedraft. Williams, he splashes onto the
(01:35:28):
scene. It's going to it's gonnabe the second year in a row where
they look dumb, because that's notgonna be fixed by a coaching staff or
players around him. This guy's gotto be whatever they end up doing around
him because he's the guy for theforesee of the future, because they drafted
him until further you know, notification. Otherwise he's got to like bust onto
(01:35:49):
the scene in his sophomore year.Otherwise, I mean, you're gonna start
getting second guessing coming from all areas, not just in Carolina. You're already
getting that there. I bet you'reseeing what CJ. Shroud's doing last year
and you're like, what the bleepdid we trade all of that to get?
Like you got those top four guys, and they were pretty spread out
because you're going all the way tothe second round with Levis Lewis, Richardson,
(01:36:09):
Stroud, and Young are top fourquarterbacks drafted, and all of them
are entering this upcoming season as thestarter for their respective teams. It's obvious
you'd take CJ. Stroud over allof them, but the other three,
like whose future and all things areconsidered the team they're with, the coach
they're playing for, the offense, they're gonna run. Whose future do you
(01:36:30):
like the most of those three andwhose future do you like the least?
Give me the names again? Well, the other three quarterbacks, Bryce Young,
Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis.I don't even think it takes.
It's a take one second. ButAnthony Richardson's like an incomplete for me.
But you'd want Bryce Young's future overhis, probably know, because you're what
(01:36:51):
do you want out of your quarterback? Extreme excellence? Not he's pretty good.
But if Anthony Richardson keeps getting hurt, it's a risk worth taking.
It's the Colts that is a riskworth taking. Like if he can't play
because he can't stay healthy, Ijust wonder or feel bad if I'm the
Colts. I don't think Chris Baleris like a man. What a mistake?
And I just can't play because hecan't play? That's different. And
(01:37:13):
I know I just got done sayinghe better, you know, do all
that. I can't help, Butwonder, Okay, what if he was
in a Look? How many timesdo these guys go to a good even
situation? Rarely, if ever, but any other situation than the perfect storm
of suck that was Carolina last yearand he was a part of it.
Again, look inside that and thinkabout what you said and why it's okay
(01:37:33):
to go into a bad situation. You're the reason that it doesn't stay that
way, and he was not thereason it got better. C J.
Stroud is the reason the Texans aren'tgoing to be a bad situation moving forward
like other previous number one over Yetthey found a way to lose to him.
I can't believe they lost that game. That's one weekend of college of
football. They was out there andlooked like trash. I honestly think that
(01:37:57):
they've played. They played. Theylost to Zach Wilson way, even with
their defense shut out by Zack Wilson, is what you make. So they
gave up thirty points to Zack Wilson. No, you said it wasn't Zach
Wilson. You said it was deemingand dunking. He threw the baseball or
through the football five feet and thenthe Texans throwing a baseball. It was.
It was bad. That's the onethat burns me more than the others
(01:38:18):
because it's just a terrible showing. They could have gotten away with it in
Carolina. They could have still won. They were winning when the kick was
in the air. Same thing happenedwith the Falcons and Desmond Ritter. They
got dominated by the Jets and thenhe got concussed. So all right,
we will get to in case youmissed it, coming up next, as
we usually do this time of day, but not before wex and I tell
you about one of the best thingsthat has happened here in Houston, the
(01:38:41):
arrival of QC Kinetics. And you'relike, well, what is that.
Well, in case you've been livingunder a rock and you haven't heard us
talk about it before, but it'salso a big deal to know what QC
Kinetics is. Not just that they'reavailable here in Houston and now for Houston
area locations the Woodlands, the Heights, Sugarland, and now in Cyprus the
newest location, but they provide amazingregenerative medicine treatments. Why that's important because
(01:39:04):
if you have joint pain of anykind, you can avoid surgery and go
this route which is much safer andmuch more effective. Yeah, the route
that takes you to the best. That's QC Kinetics, the nation's leader in
regenerative medicine. That is the bestcall them now QC Kinetics at seven one
three nine one three fifty two eightyfive. No risky surgery, no pain
(01:39:25):
pills. It's an all natural solution. We're talking about regenerative medicine. They're
transforming lives. They're getting you thatlife back that you once loved living.
And tens of thousands of people satisfiedcustomers now satisfied, patients now reclaim their
mobility, and you get this allin advance of the spring and summer months
ahead here in Houston four area location, sugar Land, the Heights, the
(01:39:47):
Woodlands, the newest location in Cyprus. Get set up with that free consultation
at QC Kinetics at seven one threenine one three fifty two eighty five for
QC Kinetics, as we always dohere at five o'clock hour, segment number
two, in case you missed. It's a bunch of items we deserve some
(01:40:12):
discussion about and just not have notbeen able to do that yet. Couple
of football items all shelve so wecan get to a couple of baseball items
initially, how about this little number. Our good friend, former Yankee Josh
Donaldson, done with Major League Baseball, announced his retirement following a thirteen year
career. It's a one time AmericanLeague MVP Award winner. He's won one
(01:40:38):
time. He's one of several AmericanLeague players that had Mike Trout as runner
up. Trout has four runner upsand three wins. So Mike Trout is
one of five only five active AmericanLeague players that have won the American League
MVP. There's only five of them. He's won. Aaron Judge is another,
(01:41:00):
and the rest are Astros Jo It'sridiculous, Jose L two, they
and Justin Verlander. Those are theonly five active American League MVP Award winners
that are still active in the AmericanLeague. Obviously several al MVP winners are
still active, but they play forthe Dodgers now MOOKI and show Hey,
(01:41:21):
et cetera. But that's how youget to that number. Josh Donaldson was
absolutely atrocious last year for the Yankees. Then he got moved to Milwaukee.
Was equally atrocious and probably recognized, whether it's due to injury or another reason,
age couldn't play anymore. Good career, Probably not definitively in my mind,
not an MVP or not a Hallof Famer. In waiting is another
(01:41:44):
third baseman. Yeah, oh,go ahead, Well, I was gonna
ask about Mike Trout, yep, because seven top two finishes for MVP and
how many awards three three wins forsecond place finishes, and nobody argued with
it. Nobody even batted an eyelash, and they probably shouldn't have at the
time. But looking back in hindsight, as long as you acknowledge that it's
the best player award and not literallythe most valuable because we're always talking about
(01:42:10):
that NBA, Major League Baseball,we don't do it so much in the
NFL, but it's like, whatare you what's your criteria? What makes
you vote for this guy? Inthis case? And to tie it to
what we've been talking about with theDonaldson retirement, just take it to that
particular season. You know, MikeTrout finished runner up. He got seven
votes, the other twenty three wentto Donaldson. That's why he won.
(01:42:30):
They got the first place votes ninepoint six war for Trout, and of
the MVP ballot there was another player, Manny Machado at seven to five and
then Donaldson at seven point one.Mike Trout's WAR was two point five,
a huge number. That nier thenJosh Donaldson. But guess what happened with
(01:42:51):
the Angels and guess what happened withthe Blue Jays in twenty fifteen when the
player on the Blue Jays won theaward, one of them went to the
playoffs. Exactly imagine they would winlike twenty games. Though if Mike Trout
wasn't on the Angels, so hegets yeah, according to the numbers roughly,
that is the other way to lookat it, as fuzzy math.
(01:43:11):
Very few people do it for thatreason. You're right, where would the
Angels be without him? But ifthey're already nowhere with him? Right,
they just kind of dismissed it.That year they had Shohey Otani and Mike
Trout and have bleep to show forit. Blue Jays had the second best
record in the al They ended uplosing in the ALCS to the eventual World
Series champion Kansas City Royals. Okay, seriously, think about what I just
(01:43:34):
said. Though Angels did not makethe playoffs right by one game? Oh
okay, they were one game behindthe Astros. Okay, great, that's
great, But again, think aboutwhat I just said. How bad does
the right and there The thing isthe rest of their organization wasn't necessarily bad.
I mean, other than the timethey killed a guy. But like
(01:43:55):
Brendon's been there, even though it'sbeen poorly spent money, I know,
we always come back to the samething. Well, they just never had
starting pitching after Otani, Like, how can you just never ever have anything
to show for having two of thegreatest players of a generation on your roster.
That's insane to me. Hard thatyou never able to develop much and
(01:44:17):
hard that you'd never be a teamthat you have the money, you're spending
it on rendo and you're spending iton poles, you're spending it on players.
You just never spend it all theright guys take it that go to
other places. Then Flourish Marsh startedon a World Series team for the Phillies.
It was like their eighth the bestplayer, I would say eleventh because
after you factor in the fact thathe just hairs in whatever that substance was,
(01:44:42):
he gets lowered down the wrong secondbase. He hit a home run
off of mccollors, didn't he that'sseen you You baited me and I didn't
fall for it. Say it againand I'll tell you what you wanted me
to say. He hit a homerun off of mccullors, didn't he who
didn't? But I won't say it. I didn't barely Matt another Toronto third
baseman, a former Toronto third baseman. He had his presser today with the
(01:45:04):
San Francisco Giants who inked him toan option laden deal. Get good money
for one year, and if hewants it for another year, he can
have it. If he wants itfor a third year, he can have
it. But it's at his option, three years, fifty four million.
But all this really means is hecan't replace Alex Bregman. No that Scott
Boris had another press conference because thisis another one of his players that now
(01:45:24):
has ada. His hair looked dyedat this one. Sure look, sure
did here in Houston. It alwaysdoes, you know why, because he
dyes his hair. There you go. So he described the market as per
usual, a very strange one.It was a year where you know,
many clubs or you know the competitivenessof he's trying to make it into a
baseball situation as to why some ofhis particular players. Now there's two Boris
(01:45:45):
two the Boris too Blake Snell andJordan Montgomery. His exact quote, there
is a pitching panic going on inbaseball. We've got so many starting pitchers
that are now compromised, maybe shortterm, some long term, and the
calls for elite starters are starting toincrease. Because in his own reporting,
because he would know, and Ihope he's telling you the truth, he
(01:46:05):
says, four new teams since thebeginning of spring training have inquired about these
two free agent pitchers. Of coursethey have, but then they find out
how much stupid money you think theyshould get, and they say thanks,
but no thanks, go take yourhair dye and do what you need to
do with it. He's basically saying, once it's clear they didn't find the
(01:46:28):
money they were looking for, whichwe never would have offered him, why
don't we just make a phone calland see what's up. And there probably
are really good teams who would nothave considered them otherwise, trying to find
out if there is a possibility, even if it is one of those deals
where it is kind of a oneyear deal, Jim Crane would give either
of those guys one year. Itfits under the structure of how he likes
(01:46:50):
to do things. Justin Verlander's statusup in the air now, and again
that vesting option for JB at onehundred and forty million if one hundred and
forty innings. If he pitched onehundred and forty innings, the vesting option
kicks in, and he is nowunder contract for twenty twenty five at thirty
five million, seventeen and a halfmillion. Half will be paid by the
Mets. Okay, so let's justassume it's not Snell, because he's gonna
(01:47:15):
make a much bigger chunk of thetwo regardless of the parameters of the deal.
And we also know the answer tothis question. If Jordan Montgomery signs
with the Astros under these circumstances Fromber'syour opening day starter and then him Yeah,
if Justin Verlander's not available. Actually, I'm not sure because of it.
I only say this because of timing, because Montgomery is gonna be ready
(01:47:36):
to start in the first couple ofgames. But when you get down to
it at the end of the season, look at what you're look look at
what the other team is now facing. In the first four games of the
series, Montgas lost, Cludez andVerlander. I mean, don't I don't
expect the He would be your openingday starter if he was ready. But
then you go back to the original. I mean, how many can these
(01:47:58):
guys be ramped up to to thewhere they need to be. It just
comes down to what have they beenable to competitively do while not playing for
a team or not playing video games. I guess it was the COVID year.
I can't remember for sure, butone year all these guys got together
to work out together to get themselvesprepared together the street and whatnot. Two
quick notes on your favorite team inTexas the plays football professionally. Cowboys are
(01:48:24):
not going to have Tyron Smith back. So no fourteenth year at tackle for
Tyron Smith. Another phenomenal pick oftheirs. That wasn't Jihan Manziel, That
wasn't Johnny. He's had an unbelievablecareer there. They've been very good on
the old line with him and DakPrescott. Quote is definitely confident about a
(01:48:45):
contract extension with the Cowboys as theywere away from him having a fifty nine
point four million dollar cap hit thisupcoming year. I got a question about
Tyron Smith for both of you.I guess fire away, Yes, do
you think he's a Hall of Famer. I think it's if I immediately thought
about it and didn't know yet,I would say, yeah, Tyron Smith
(01:49:08):
sounds like a guy who probably wasFirst team All Pro four or five times,
and it seems like that's the kindof thing that would suggest a Yes,
he was only a First Teamer twice, but he was also on the
All Decade Team. All Decade playersstrike me as Hall of famers. You
were the best at your position overa ten year period. Basically, I'm
gonna say, yes, that's aHall of Famer. I'm gonna say yes.
(01:49:30):
I'm gonna say anybody that plays offensiveline in the NFL the majority of
the snaps for fourteen years is aHall of Famer. I got a question
for you. Trey is a fellowoffensive lineman, new retiree Jason Kelsey,
a six time First team All Proand seven time Pro Bowl Jason Kelsey.
Is he a Hall of Famer?I'm pretty sure he is a lock.
(01:49:51):
He is trade crushed. He isa lock. By the way. Those
first let's see, well, eleventhrough twenty nineteen, he played in every
game, he started, every gamehe played in. He I mean the
least amount he played was thirteen gamessixteen fifteen, sixteen, sixteen, sixteen,
(01:50:11):
thirteen, thirteen, thirteen, thirteen. I mean, he he's pretty
much a lock those first the firstbasically decade he played with the Dallas Cowboys,
he was just this side of pencilhim in every single game. That's
another reason, I mean attendance counts, especially at that position, because you're
you're protecting the most valuable investment ofthe franchise any given time. Unless your
(01:50:36):
name's Davis Mills, then you're notreally a valuable investment. So Antonio and
Dakota. Yeah, Antonio, that'shis name, Antonio Romo, that's Jim's
partner. Antonio, Yeahlifer and Ithink more football that would be a I'm
not sure where the money is.That's a really tough one to figure out.
(01:50:57):
At this stage of his career tothe last four years. He's been
hurt, but when out there,he still holds his own. That's a
team that probably gets better at tacklewhen they sign him. He went from
playing four games in twenty twenty twoback up to thirteen his final year.
YEP played a full season's worth ofgames over two years, so half before
that he didn't play good stuff. All right, we continue here on the
(01:51:18):
eight team Sports Talk seven to ninety. There's still a few NFL news and
notes to get to that we willdo. Plus are we doing Are we
doing the giveaway? I need toask you because there's a trivia question and
we need to give those away andwe haven't yet. Yeah, at five
thirty, we will give away ticketsto go see either Trey's favorite band or
Adam's favorite band. I can't rememberwhich of you loves nickel Back, Moore.
(01:51:41):
Don't you mean closer to like fivethirty five or six? Yeah?
That when we come back from thequote unquote five thirty break, which is
current, so about five minutes, you'll want to be with us as we
give you your chance to win fourtickets to go see Nickelback at Rodeo Houston.
That's next. Both take a giveawaytime here on Sports Talk seven ninety
(01:52:05):
as Rodeo Houston continues, and welook forward to sending you out to as
many awesome shows as possible. Sendsome people to see Hank Williams Junior.
That was fast, Yeah, Trey, what's up? Come on now?
Like you need we need the musicpotential that's that's information that could be exposed
by this song if it keeps playing. Mmm, okay, yeah, you
(01:52:29):
know what I'm saying. No,I hope we all know what you're saying.
When I ask you about tickets togo see Nickelback at seven one three
two one two five seven ninety, they're playing March thirteenth. That NRG Stadium,
that's Rodeo Houston. You can alsoget your tickets. They're on selling
out Rodeo Houston dot com. Ourquestion today to go see. However,
many Kroger's are still in the band. What Nickelback single became the official theme
(01:52:53):
song of WWE Survivor Series twenty fourteen. If you have any idea what song
that might be, that continuing toplay that song might give you some very
important information, whatever song that mightbe, just call Trey at seven one
three two one two five seven ninetyand tell them what it is and we'll
send you to go see. Ibelieve I said four. I must amend
(01:53:15):
that my apologies. I am nota very good reader. A pair of
tickets, that's two, A pairof tickets to Rodeo Houston to see Nickelback
on March thirteenth. What Nickelback singlebecame the official theme song of the w
W East Survivor series twenty fourteen.Name that song for Trey on the column
line and you can go see,Like I said, Chad and Larry and
(01:53:40):
Chad see's that's below your shoe withthere four Krogers of the onset or three.
A lot of people don't know this. Chad Kroger's dad was the founder
of the store Kroger's, even thoughthey spell it with too many ease.
Yeah, there's a whole big thingabout it when they opened up the store
that I believe you're making us up. That's true. Believe it or I
(01:54:01):
believe it. I'm disappointed in you, And let me tell you why.
Well, among the many reasons, today's what's today's reason that you didn't refer
to the lead singer of Nickelback asAvril Levine's ex husband Because I think of
Avril Levine's I only think of Idon't even know who I think of the
guy from some forty one. That'swhy I put her with. Is that
who she's with now? Well,I don't know if she's still with him,
(01:54:24):
but that Derek kid Deck. Yeah, I oftentimes forget that. Chad
Kroger and Avril were an item spouseChad Kroger from twenty three, twenty thirteen
to twenty fifteen. Long long marriagethere and then Derek de r y c
(01:54:44):
K love it. I don't justspell her name normal. You want to
be a rock star, mix itup. Avril and Derek could have been
April and Derek. We also justwant to be big rock stars, according
to Chad's band, and no,they are not still together because that marriage,
although it was twice as long asthe first one, only lasted four
(01:55:04):
years six to twenty ten, andit was actually before them obviously. So
her Facebook page currently says single.Maybe it could be, it could say
it's in a relationship. It's complicated. As my favorite uh Adrian, congrats
you were going to see nickelback onthe thirteenth Edge of a Revolution. For
(01:55:25):
those that didn't hear the snippet, only the snippet of the song that was
played to open this segment. Sothe twenty fourteen Edge of a Revolution was
held in what building? Well, there's two Toyota Center, So I'll say
Toyota Center first, because there's oneout in California and there's one here?
Is that correct? There? Youknow what's funny about that, because the
(01:55:47):
Survivor series is arena stuff. Youhere it is. I'm looking at the
Golden One Center Scott Trade Center inSane Lewis Music, Missouri. Oh,
the home of the Nobody's the Blues. It's so funny you say that because
I went to the Compact Center oncein San Jose. Well that's what it
(01:56:10):
was called in San Jose to gosee Actually it was that year's mania surrounding
festivities like the Hall of Fame's there, the raws there and all that,
and I was like, ah,this is hilarious. This is where the
Sharks play. San Jose Sharks inthe other Compact Center. But at the
time I think that it had alreadychanged to Lakewood Church back here in Houston,
(01:56:30):
So there was just the one CompactCenter, but at one point there
was two. I was was justwondering what the venue was so I could
do an impression of Michael Cole inall likelihoods saying you are looking live.
He stole that from was it Musburgerthat used to say that you did?
Now it wasn't. At first Iwanted to say it was Vern Lunquist,
but I couldn't remember. Yes.The current home of the San Jose Sharks
(01:56:51):
the SAP Center, And let metell you, it's about as unimpressive a
building as you could possibly ever.I mean, just basic. Some of
the like Okay, the Smoothie KingCenter. The only reason it's still standing
in New Orleans is because it's literallyconnected to the other dump that they play
football in. Those are two ofthe worst decrepit, just awful venues for
(01:57:14):
their respective sports. And I hopeChris Gordy's listening right now so you can
get upset too, because they're justawful. The Smoothie King Center looks like
they just put up concrete walls andthrew a basketball court down. There's nothing
to it, concourses all, andyou have limited selections if you do want
to get a smoothie, Like comeon, when you go to a Smoothie
King, you have like what approximatelyseven hundred and fifty choices on that huge
(01:57:36):
menu that they have out in frontof their behind the counter, But you
get like three choices if you goto the Smoothie King Center. Blend it
up, man, raise your game, elevate your level of service for the
customer. Well, you're kind ofworking on a speed business if you're in
arena, aren't you, If you'reat an actual location taking your time and
(01:58:00):
properly blending and asking that they wantto add gin sing and all the other
nonsense. It's fine, Oh youwanted blueberries in that one. Sorry,
you kind of need to got awhittle down the menu a little bit.
Don't you give me a bunch ofstrawberries, give me a bunch of bananas,
and tell everybody they have one choice. That's basically how it goes there.
Yeah, you just got to getthem, get their get their order,
get their money, and get themon their way. And don't get
me started on the super Dome, which is anything but super. It's awful
(01:58:24):
is that it's a dump, haslimited bells and whistles, limited bells and
whistles, It has in none basicallyand yet super bowls And the last time
I was there for a big event, it ran out of concessions. Did
it really? Yeah, we're likemy pregnant wife at the time. We're
looking for a bottle, a bottleof water. We don't have those here.
(01:58:45):
There's seventy thousand people here, whichis part of the reason why you're
saying you don't obviously, but youdon't have a bottle of water on the
premises. Wow, oh yeah,I mean it was that kind of night.
The crowd started chanting, this isboring. During the main event was
Wrestlemannier. Yeah, it was Rainsversus Brock and it wasn't. It was
an awful too long main event, and she was very pregnant and wanted to
(01:59:06):
get out of there, especially onceshe found out there was no water left
all right, final segment of theshow coming up next. You know where
they have bottles of water and theynever run out of inventory. For example
UVC Power Sports Tractors and Outdoors inAlvin, Texas. Scott and Shannon Tracy
are there and they're waiting for youright now to get you into the new
(01:59:28):
Kawasaki Ridge. That's the new Kawasakiside by side that you can get into.
I've seen it in person, sawit at the rodeo this past Friday.
They had their upstairs booth at theRanch and Wildlife Expo and they had
the Kawasaki Ridge right there. Shannonwas standing right next to it with their
table, their booth, everything theyhad there and they had several people coming
(01:59:50):
up and looking at that thing, and why not. It's the best that
Kawasaki has to offer, and theyjust keep making their product even better.
When it comes to Kawasaki, there'sonly one place to get it. UVC
Power Sports, Tractors and Outdoors Rodeois here. Spring is in the air.
That means it's time to get ondown there to Alvin, Texas and
(02:00:11):
find out why they are your onestop destination for all your outdoor needs.
But when it comes to Kawasaki, they've got it and don't forget. You
can test drive them on their fifteenplus acre test track right there on the
premises, right behind the facility, and truly experience what it's like to see
what those machines are capable of.Thinking of taking the little guy down there
in a few weeks cannot wait forit because his mind is going to be
(02:00:33):
blown and yours will be too. That test track has everything you could ever
hope for and you'll have some funout there. Not to mention the inventory
and the deals on set inventory isthey're going to have you covered out there.
Check out that inventory online at theirwebsite UVC one Stop dot Com.
Give them a call at two eightone eight two four eleven ninety eight because
(02:00:54):
when it comes down to getting theKawasaki Ridge, there's only one place to
go UVC Power Sports Tractors Outdoors andagain with that Kawasaki Ridge, it's business
in the front, party in theback. Because stone Colds said so.
(02:01:14):
So normally when celebrities and in thiscase, sports figures pass away, I
don't really it's it's sad sometimes,and there's some that I really I mean,
when Matthew Perry passed away, itwas just like, Oh, that's
bad, Dad's really bad. Youwere a big Friends fan. I was,
and I was actually watching an episodeof it the night that happened.
(02:01:35):
Got in the truck to run anerrand and I saw it on social media
before I pulled out of the driveway, and I was like, I was
shook. But you know, it'sfor the most part, I try.
I just tend to. You know, it sucks. Bob Barker was one
because I grew up with him thatkind of thing. But Chris Mortensen is
a guy that I think all ofus grew up watching at some point because
(02:01:58):
he's so tied to the NFL andbecause he was there for so long and
not not in the same way asChris Berman. There's a difference, Like
Chris Berman's more of like a loudpersonality. Chris Mortinson was like the first
go to This is a national reputableguy who's just really good at his job
that basically everybody universally likes. Yeah, all the people that are on studio
(02:02:23):
shows that are analysts and or reporters, newsbreakers, et cetera. He's among
the first that became a huge televisionfigure. He obviously, I think everybody
knows. He's a beat writer formany, many years. And it's kind
of the path that some people likeMortar, Schefter, Woj or stephen A
take to TV because they're extremely wellrespected for their ability to cover a team
(02:02:46):
or cover a sport and have connectionsand have newsworthy items and have relationships with
people and then turning that into youknow, your television persona. There was
nothing else there like even here onthis show. I do it all the
time. Chefter and Woj like whatI can't stand or why it's Well,
he's a little different because he's onan opinion show. They're still on studio
(02:03:09):
shows trying to break news and often, but they your opinion about Humpy Ange,
but I can't think of I mean, there may have been a tweet
or two along the way, andI'm I can't even think of them offhand,
like when did more ever go on? Or when did he say this?
Or do a report? And someonemight remind me of something, but
it's pretty infrequent over the years whereI thought, Man, I'm that's that's
that's low or that's weak, orthat's bad or I don't like it.
(02:03:30):
And then you're talking about the personalside, which I don't have any background
on either, but you find outunfortunately in these times. And you know
the NFL network, I thought,uh, with the people they had doing
the broadcast was Rich Eyesen and DanielJeremiah. They had a strong personal relationship
with Mort. You know. Richtalked about how Mort was there when he
got there and how he helped himimmensely along the way, and Jeremiah being
(02:03:53):
you know, a scout and tryingto get into the business when he was
young. He described a situation Idon't know that everybody knows. It was
basically Worth that helped him all alongthe way, getting him out to the
combine, having him do work forhim personally as he kind of learned how
to do things and became a scoutand then got back on TV. And
it was pretty emotional for him becausehe was talking about his wife and his
daughter, his son Mortenson's and andthat's who he's thinking about at this time,
(02:04:16):
and I think that a lot ofpeople are as well. A battle
with cancer that took his life atage seventy two. Yeah, and the
fact that Daniel Jeremiah was texting withhim just last night. I mean it
was just about the combine about aboutthe sport, and he even went on
to say, you know, Ididn't want to come in today. This
is the last thing I wanted todo. But he would have quote punched
(02:04:38):
me in the face if I didn'thave fun with this sport that he loves
so much. And that's that's whatreally came across when you watch Chris Mortenson.
So you know, thoughts in anythingelse, prayers, what have you
to his family and people that wereclose to him, because normally, like
I said, not that you knowa guy like that that's universally loved passes
(02:04:59):
and it has been such a bigpart of all of our viewing habits when
it comes to such a big entitylike the NFL, it's a big deal
when he's he's not going to bearound anymore. Now, this guy's not
gonna be around anymore, but it'snot in the same sense. We have
to say thanks to our boy TreyCampbell, who just so happens to be
spending his last few hours here atseven ninety producing our show since Dan was
(02:05:23):
out today. Yeah, thanks Dan. Well, Dan steps aside, so
try and get a little more runhere with us. Wrapping up your tenure
here with Sports Talk seven to ninetyas many do and working towards bigger and
better things. You were a joyto have alongside for all of the shows
ours included always bringing that a littleextra flavor like you do. Looking forward
(02:05:46):
to seeing what the future for TreyCampbell holds. Thank you so much.
Yeah, I've Like I said,my ultimate goal when I got here was
to get to seven ninety, andthat I got here was cool. I'm
glad to have worked here. Howlong it was your tenure at seven to
ninety, I'd say about a year. No, it's been longer than that,
Yeah, because you were s thisfamily of networks. Yeah, Oh,
(02:06:09):
I guess that's true. Well,I guess I should have said iHeart
then because i'd see you around thebuilding at the old place. Yeah,
I was there all the time.Yeah, I always had. I was
always there trying to ask like randomsports questions to people. Now you're still
going to be making people laugh, right, that's the goal. Yeah,
I'm hoping to still keep doing comedy. Well, I still owe you a
visit twenty of your shows. I'vebeen I've legit been wanting to go see
(02:06:30):
you and I just haven't had achance yet. Yeah, there's still time.
I still I'm still gonna do alot of shows, a lot of
open mics this week, so I'mnot moving till the eighth, but i'll
probably I got on a show Saturdaythat went well, so and Dez saw
me. If we all know Deaywe do. Yeah, she was there
(02:06:51):
So that was cool. Awesome,Well, good luck and everything. And
you're you're obviously you're gonna love Austinbecause everybody I don't know anybody that doesn't
been to Austin since yesterday. That'sawesome. I love it. Yeah,
And after this weekend, You've gota daughter at UT and I'll have a
daughter at ut soon, So Ihave a feeling I'll be running to you
sooner rather than later. Trey, all right, all right, well,
(02:07:14):
glad to hear it, and wewill miss you for sure, and glad
that you could be a part ofour show for your last show. How
hold on a second on that music, though, because I got to tell
people one more thing. If you'relooking to get to Austin to see Trey,
I cannot think of a better vehicleto get into than one
