(00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adamtalking Your Team series, Adam Clinton and
Adam Wexler are the A Team ALet's see to twenty four here on Sports
Talk seven ninety Connor, why aren'tyou playing the Matt Thomas Show? Intro?
(00:26):
That guy is not gonna work today? Unbelievable. What's happening snack timers?
Yeah, that's that's exactly right?Or is it? Is it coffee
run timers? At this time ofday? It might be coffee run timers.
You get that big lunch in ona Friday. I was gonna say,
you probably go a little bit ofan earlier lunch, and then I'd
say about one thirty is the coffeerun because nobody really gets all the way
(00:47):
till five. Well, I wasabout to say, because it's a Friday,
I don't even know how many peopleare coming back from lunch. And
as the as we get closer tothe tournament, that's gonna be even more
the case because they're not even gonnacome into work. Those you see the
sales pit out here, which dayit is a dirt road out there?
Right? Oh man? Tumbleweeds blowingby? All right? That's Dan Matthews.
(01:08):
I'm Adam Clanton. It is theA team very very early today,
because well, we gotta get thosegames in quicker. We can't have our
games going slow and not being asfast as NBA and football games. This
is how the people talk, bythe way. We gotta we gotta spraight
it up. So that's what itis. Now. Gone are the days
(01:32):
where a spring training game that startsat what it was today, eleven fifty
as usual. It was yeah,I think noon first pitch right around there.
So I'm honestly impressed that the Astrosmade it into the two o'clock hour.
The way things go these days.Yeah, well was it a couple
of days ago. That's what happened, and that's what precipitated Matt Thomas to
become a snack timer that day.But well he didn't greet the strippers today
(01:53):
or anything. Just gotta say,we feel cheated, like, how did
we not at least get him onthe phone, and I'll set to do
that. He is in Portland rightnow, which means he's probably eating lunch
if he's going according to their timezone clock, Yeah, two hours behind
probably something like that. So anyways, that's the latest as we will get
the show up and run. Ifyou're wondering where Wex is, he will
(02:15):
be along shortly, likely right aroundthe four o'clock mark is when he will
join us. And yeah, lateron tonight, Matt will work, albeit
for another entity. You know, the station's not paying him for the work
he's doing tonight, so he's literallyscrewing the company. Time for the Coach's
Corner, brought to you by ToiletPortland is the venue. The Rockets will
(02:39):
be there tonight to take on theBlazers. Hopefully they can contain Anthony Simons
that he doesn't score thirty three ormore on him on them like he did
the last time those two teams gotit got together. But that will be
here for you on Sports Talk sevenninety tipping off at nine o'clock, which
means eight thirty Network, which meanseight o'clock. Dan is gonna be pulling
(03:02):
double duty because you're also producing thegame to Now that's it, you know
it. So it'll be me onRockets launch Pad getting you ready for this
one tonight. It's a gettable one, but the road has not been kind
to that Rocket and a little bit, so you're hoping that maybe you can
turn that luck around just a littlebit. I mean, I said it
at the beginning of the season, when the Rockets are struggling on the road,
(03:23):
you know, maybe you need tosend a contingent down the street,
maybe take them lunch, do somethinglike that. Asked the Astros, Hey,
what did you guys do? Likewhat worked for y'all to be able
to turn things around? And thenyou know, look, the Astros could
return the favor. Hey, youguys play so well at home, Like,
what are you guys doing you know, on the home floor that you're
not doing on the road, Likewe might need to kind of replicate that
(03:45):
a little bit and try to pullsome of that magic over at minute Made
Park. No, I could seethat being the case. We're up for
any scenarios of any kind. Butthe Astros weren't up for a scenario of
keeping this thing in a respect themanor early on six' three the final
today against the Phillies, And alot of that was because the guy that
(04:05):
I think a lot of people havean eye on for this upcoming year,
Spencer Arraghetty or Spaghetti as you cancall him, did not have it going
and as the Phillies were able toput up five runs over the first three
innings, he was responsible for allof that basically as he gave up He
only went three innings today, gaveup five runs on those five hits,
(04:27):
four earned runs. I guess Ishould say he did strike out a couple,
but you know, that's part ofworking out the kinks this time of
year. And I do think he'llend up factoring into things before all of
a sudden done. I just don'tknow how. Thirty three and thirteen that's
the number I look at today withSpencer Arraghetty, And I was having this
conversation with a buddy of mine lastnight of you know, people nitpicking spring
(04:48):
training outings, and I said, hey, look man, here's what the
goal is in spring training. Findthe zone. Hit the zone. If
I'm seeing walks, if i'm seeingyou know, just erratic control all those
things, which thirty three strikes thirteenballs does not show me that's the case,
then I'm a little concerned. Butit's a guy that said, hey,
here's what I got. And bythe way, he faced a pretty
(05:10):
good lineup over there and struck outBryce Harper today as well, so showing
he can kind of hold his owna little bit as well. Yeah,
a lot of familiar faces in thatlineup from the World Series still, and
it was It's just I always laughat that kind of thing because you know
that they would unquestionably take some ofthose innings and some of those games back
back from twenty twenty two in exchangefor a meaningless spring training game here today.
(05:31):
But Corey Jolks continues to have astrong springs. He got a homer
in today. Didn't get the Astroson the board until the sixth inning,
but definitely did and it winds upbeing a six to three final. We'll
discuss. We'll get our JV updatein in a three o'clock hour. We
will talk a little Rockets and definitelytalk some Texans. We have some semi
(05:54):
breaking news. Yeah, it's makingthe rounds right now. And you know,
kind of like I did yesterday ofbeing show killer, I accidentally buried
the lead there for a second withWex, So I promise to not do
that today at the JV update,I got the look through the camera.
Yeah, after I had interrupted himwith it was pissed. He was not
happy he did not have a chanceto get you guys that Christian Javier note.
(06:15):
And I apologize to the audience forthat. That's on me, that's
not on wex. And I'll bebetter today. I will be better.
I've learned the air of my ways. I've gotten in the film room.
I'm ready to go. I willnot repeat the same mistake. Well,
we appreciate that, because after embarrassingyourself and your family, we need to
bounce back to formance. I dishonoredmyself and the platoon. I had to
eat the jelly doughnut in front ofyou guys, and I'm sure now I'll
(06:36):
probably get the bars of soap.Well, try not to give you a
sock party between now and six o'clock. All right, that's Dan Matthews.
I'm Adam Clanton. It's the eighteen. Conder McGovern sticking around. At least
one member of the Matt Thomas Showworking today, as we will take you
up until six o'clock. Obviously theeighteen usually starts at three, so maybe
we'll play our show intro again. You never know, you guys, stick
(06:59):
around for it. A lot toget to will give away nickelback tickets to
some point today, A whole lotto do here. On a Friday edition
of the eighteen, Adam Clinton hadAdam Wegford the eight Team, eight Team
rolling along here on Sports Talk sevento ninety following a Astros spring training outing
that saw the Phillies get the six' three victory. Amusing air quotes Dan
(07:23):
Matthews, Adam Clanton, with youtaking up until six o'clock tonight, wex
will be along in the four o'clockhour or so ish, however you want
to call it, we'll and we'lltalk about a lot of the things we're
gonna cover over the next half hourhere with him, because I want to
get his reaction on a number ofthings. One of the things we didn't
mention last segment that is now Ithink I believe it's the final Domino because
(07:48):
Mayton is signed and Nerris is signed, and of the guys that departed,
and you knew we're going to departeven before the Astros, you know,
picked up a Josh hater and kindof rearrange things with their bullpen is where
was Ryan Stanet gonna go? Itwas late late in the going, but
he's gonna stay in the division.He's a Mariner. I love the I
(08:11):
was clicking amongst some of the headlines, like you type in his name and
you see who's writing what about it? Seattle Mariners sign world champion reliever to
one year deal. Yeah, theywould know. They're one of the teams
that were in the way of theAstros and that twenty twenty two World Series
championship And what's funny about that runwas how many times? And boy there's
(08:33):
I mean, people talk about mehaving my sports hate and my hang ups
and my idiosyncrasies about all things youknow that I've I don't like or I
don't care for whatever. Not Alot of things are not on the list
of stuff that will make Adam Wexlerroll his eyes, recoil, whatever you
want to call it. He hatedhearing from anybody that was like where is
(08:58):
it? Stannic pitched, then hepitched his playoff. I mean, where
did what's Dusty doing? Like whyis he not coming out? And you
know, he wound up, hewound up being one of the best moments
in the post clincher celebration in thelocker room. Got a got a very
(09:18):
throaty wu from him, if youwill, holding up the trophy over his
head, in the clubhouse after thegame and after you know, Champagne's flying
everywhere. But one of the bestdudes ever. He and his wife very
active in the community, but obviouslygot the job done in time or two.
And last year, one of myfavorite moments of the season was him
(09:39):
getting after I don't even remember thename of the official, the umpire,
Yeah, a second base the ballyep in Dodger Stadium. Yeah, I
mean he was. That's his animatedand that's saying something for him because he's
got the hair, he's got thestrut and all that. He's got the
wild stuff. But that's that's abouthis most animated. I'd seen Ryan Stanek
in his time, and he wasbut we'll miss that guy. Miss what
(10:01):
he brought to the clubhouse. Allthe guys loved him. But he's a
Mariner one year deal, like allof the guys have left they've signed.
I don't think Mayton got a multiyear deal. I could be wrong on
him, but Hector nariis Ryan Stanekboth definitely one year deals. Yeah,
and also to Mayton, I believethat is what he is in Tampa and
watch he goes and enters the Tampapitching lab there and Bears with the Cubs,
(10:26):
almost an all Star there with Tampa. But no, you know,
happy for Ryan Stanik. I mean, you know, I know there was
a report earlier today that there wasa little bit of contact with the Astros,
but then they decided to go theway they went, and he decided
to continue down his path of allright, I guess we're looking for another
home. And it makes the Marinerswith him there because I share the same
sentiment about him as well, greatguy, always approachable in the clubhouse,
(10:50):
just somebody can go and talk with. I mean him being an Arkansas guy,
I'd always talk SEC football with hima little bit. But you know,
it's just it's what the Mariners,It's kind of the whole thing with
why I don't like them is muchlike the Rangers shoehorning themselves into the Astros
cheater hate kind of stuff. It'slike, why are you involved in this?
Like you have nothing to do withthis, Like this would be like
(11:11):
this would be like another SEC footballexample. This would be like Mississippi State
trying to chirp Alabama, Like youcan't chirp somebody that you're nowhere even close
to being you don't belong in thediscussion. No, one hundred percent.
You're You're not even a little brother. The Rangers are still a little brother.
I don't care they won last year. You're a second cousin. What's
removed? If that you kind ofI think you snuck into the wedding like
(11:35):
a crasher. You're not even related, but you make up family stories like
like Vince Vaughan did. That's that'sthe Mariners, because again, what did
they have. They had the electricfactory, they had the best setting you
could have hoped for in twenty plusyears against the Astros, and I mean
those they were down two oh,they had taken a huge, huge haymaker
(11:58):
at the hands of You're not Alvarezafter game one. In fact, I
talked to somebody after the game.I still won't reveal who this was,
but someone in the media was like, I don't think they come back from
that. I think they get swept. That's exactly what happened, but it's
not at all how we thought itwould happen. Don't forget. Don't forget
the CounterPunch in game two as well. I mean he got him with another
(12:20):
one where it was kind of tothe point where everybody watching those games were
like, why are you still pitchingto him? Well, like, I
guarantee you there are even people inSeattle at the time that were like,
why are we throwing anything that hecan possibly put a barrel on? Because
he was that locked in he wasin. What's funny about that postseason was
that's kind of was his bookend.H he didn't do a lot in between
(12:43):
those two games. And what themammoth blast that he had in Game six
against the Phillies, Well, Imean, I love the thing that's making
its rounds right now on Twitter ofif you can hear this picture and somebody
posted you know, of course theball leaving the bat and I wanted to
right back this game Scott turned upsidedown because I mean, that's I'll turn
the picture up side I will alwaysYeah, actually, that's a good idea.
(13:05):
I probably should have responded with thatof hey, post this upside down
so we'll really get it. Butno, I mean, that's that's been
yord On for the better part ofhis Astros career is when he's on a
heater, he is on a heater, and when he is not really seeing
it at the time, you're kindof like, are injuries involved? What's
happening here? And you know, you just kind of find hope he finds
his way, but eventually he doesto being able to get it going again.
(13:28):
It was funny because I was listeningto a lot of the broadcast today.
Todd Kallis was on the radio side, So if you were listening here
on Sports Talk seven ninety you heardkind of a combination of Space City Home
Network on the play by play andthen what was left of Sparky Lord do
the guy gargle with broken glass thismorning? Yeah, dealing with some allergies,
which I can absolutely relate to,because while Dan was talking just now,
(13:50):
I snorted some affron. Yeah that'sthe magic of radio. You didn't
hear any of that, but itis just this is like it's March eighth.
The pollen is starting to coat thevehicles. If you have a black
vehicle like I do, you canreally see it. There's no sense in
washing your car because it's going tobe covered the next day with a pretty
gratuitous amount of that dust. Butit's like, I'm not usually a spring
(14:13):
allergy guy. I'm usually a fallallergy. Like the ragweed type situation.
But if it gets to you, man, oh my goodness. And it
got to spark you today, Andas the innings were progressing, in fact,
the last inning last I guess thebottom of the eighth. I heard
it as I was driving in andTodd was like, you've got one more
(14:33):
half inning to make it for Sparkybecause it was like going quick. Yeah,
I gotta believe Matt Boltz, theon site engineer for Astros Radio,
probably as Sparky leaves the booth, behinding him a nice cup of hot tea,
probably going into the dining room rightthere getting them one. It's probably
what he needs, you know, get a little good night's sleep and hopefully
(14:54):
be able to get back at ittomorrow. But yeah, with the pollen
thing, I've lived that in larargeamounts. It doesn't usually affect me,
but I think it's starting to becauseI'm getting older. And here's the thing
though, too, is if yougo through a stretch like obviously we've had
some rain come through the area today, so it's kind of tamped down just
a little bit. But the realsign that it's bad is when you go
through stretches and say you're just sittingout in your backyard, a little breeze
(15:16):
comes through, sheets of it comeoff the trees. Oh yeah, that's
the worst. That's absolutely the worst. And again, like I said,
I'm not usually a guy that getsaffected by that, but I think I'm
starting to because it's March eighth, and this is like the fourth or fifth
quote unquote head cold. You've gotcrud and it's both me and the wife.
So we used to blame it onour kid because we've got a five
(15:37):
year old and it's like, oh, the Petrie dish that he goes to
each and every day is bringing thestuff home. And that has happened a
lot. But I don't know.Maybe in my older age, I'm getting
more sensitive. I hear that happens. But we'll see. All Right,
We've got another segment to go herein the two o'clock hour before we start
the A Team proper. We willcontinue on here on a Friday edition of
the show Sports Talk seven ninety. We now return to Adam Clinton and Adam
(16:00):
Wexworth on Sports Talk swaying in afoul tip held on too by Diasm.
The side is retired, but damagedone as a Dodger scored three times to
reclaim the league, and Stannik isfurious. He is yelling at Junior Valentine,
the second base umpire, who hasus back to him, and pitching
coach Josh Miller out to restrain Stannik, who is now yelling at Benny Gonzales,
(16:26):
the home plate umpire. Stannick absolutelyfurious with the ball call that allowed
to go ahead run to score. Now that is clearly not the highlight of
Stannick's run with the Astros, butthat was from last season. It was
a Saturday. I know it's aSaturday, and I'll tell you how I
know I was. It was meand Junior only that weekend. I don't
(16:48):
know where the misses and the daughterhad gone, but they were out of
town. Was that buzzfest weekend?Maybe it was Buzzfest. Maybe that's what
it was. And she wasn't goingto be there that night, like it
was just gonna be me and him, and I was putting together patio furniture
at the time in our living room, not on the patio, right,
So I'm watching the game and I'mgetting But you know, when you're watching
(17:10):
sporting events, especially at a pivotalage like he was at the time,
I think he was probably he wasstill four, but he's watching everything I
do. And you know, Iknow this isn't gonna surprise a lot of
you listening. I'm a little ragywhen it comes to watching my teams,
especially if they're championship contenders, andso, you know, anything that goes
south from from a stupid point ofview. I told you the other night
(17:32):
when I was watching the Rockets justcompletely botched that twenty point lead against the
Clippers. I was getting angrier andangrier. Me and Fred van Fleet had
that in common, and he hadfinally had enough with forty eight seconds remaining.
I had turned the TV off wellbefore that. Once the Clippers took
the lead and that phantom call onKawhi happened, That's when I shut off
the TV because I didn't need tosee the rest. Yeah, I was
(17:52):
gonna say, I mean, Ijust from rumbored back to that series last
year. So frustrating Friday night, you feel like you could have had it,
you just didn't get the go ahead. Hits that happens sometimes, that's
Saturday. It was a rough onefrom Brian to Bray You and he had
to try to have Ryan Stannick becausethe braid you one. The part about
it that scared me is I waslike, oh no, this is old
(18:14):
to bray You like this is hecan't find it, Like, do not
let that guy back in the building. That is not the guy we ever
want to see again. And thenon Sunday they almost did it again because
Montero gave up like four runs totie the ball game up. But that
was what I call that Sunday game, the Jose of bray You game.
I remember that he was pretty muchtheir offense that game. It was a
weird. It was a weird firstseason for him in an Astros uniform.
(18:37):
I hope it's just even slightly betterthis year. Postseason, he can't really
complain about too much, especially theopening round. But going back to Stanic,
the funny thing about that, Ithink about that whole incident where he's
yelling first at Junior Valentine. Youknow what I remember the most about that
whole thing. It wasn't necessarily himyelling at Junior, although that's part of
(18:57):
it. And then it wasn't necessarilyhim turning his attention then to the homeplate
umpires you heard there. It wasthe fact that junior Valentine stood there like,
why did he put his hands inhis armpits like that and make that
face while Stanik yelled at him.Yeah, he looked pretty dumb. He
(19:18):
had the parcel. He looked prettydumb. No he did. He had
like the par slips like kind oflike, I know I messed up,
but there's nothing you can do aboutit. I mean that pretty much was
the look that he had. Yeah, there's one thing I've always noticed with
umpires is when they know they gotit right, that's when you know they're
not going to run the guy quickly. They're gonna kind of just let him
get it out. And then atthe end it's kind of the I've got
(19:41):
the trump card for you. Igot the call right, Skip, I
got it right, And you goback and look at the replate and you're
like, hm, he did. When they run the when they run the
managers quickly, that's when they're notsure that they got it right. Now.
That's good. I mean, it'sthat's a pretty good rule of thumb
because more often than not, whenyou look back at some of these incidents,
that's how it unfolds. No,it's one hundred percent how it unfolds,
(20:03):
and you know, now with theuse of instant replay, it kind
of alleviates some of those things,so you don't see ejections quite as much.
But no, that's usually the ruleof thumb is you look at the
replay and you're like, he's gonnagive him a runway here because he knows
that he got the call. Right. Yeah, I uh, I don't
like him because of his face. That was the problem with me last year.
I mean, we've got you know, quite got quite a list now,
(20:25):
I mean we got him, wegot Vic, Cara Paza, I
mean, Angel Hernandez is everyone.C B. Buckner is everyone. I'm
trying to think who else. Whowas the guy when they played against the
Rangers opening series of I Believe thenineteen season that he was behind oh Ron
Kolpa. He was another one.No, he's not great. No,
(20:45):
yeah, I mean, and hewas also too. He was being a
complete ump show back there, rippingoff his mask, throwing out aj doing
all those different types of things.Yeah, it's the rule of thumb with
umpires. Never get into an umpshow because you look like an idiot when
you do that. Nobody's there tosee you. Nobody cares that you're there.
And for the most part, ifyou don't know umpire's names, that's
a good thing. No, thatwell, that's a good thing in any
(21:06):
sport, not to go off ona complete umpire or referee or official tangent.
But that's what we always talk about, you know, entirely too many
names in both the NBA and MajorLeague Baseball. You know, some of
the usual suspects in the NFL,but typically that's more so because they are
a on camera personality when you're watchingon TV, and well and basically if
(21:30):
you're in the stadium, it's thesame thing. I mean, for the
longest time, you know, youknew who the who had the guns.
You know, what was his nameagain, Irid Hockey And now his son's
in there, Sean Hockeley is nowe lite official. But with ed you
know, in addition to you know, one thing that took away from what
he should have been known for withhis job was also his readings of war
(21:51):
and peace. When trying to explainwhy a call was made, it did
get lengthy. Oh my god, like the left guard moved slightly before and
it's just like it just say falsestart number seventy three. That's all we
need from you. Keep it moving. I love that. I absolutely love
that. That is so good.Warrant piece. That is a long one.
I don't think I've actually read thatone. It's been a while since
I've actually read a book, sothat one probably is way down the list.
(22:15):
I was one of those kids thatonce you were assigned something, oh
yeah, that's when it became, you know, work, and therefore I
don't want to read it. Yeah, me and young Connor d McGovern we
are our lums of the Great HighSchool on Memorial forty five hundred, Forever
Saint Thomas High School. We hadthem all. We had mythology, we
had I think Lord of the Ringswas our senior reading. So yeah,
(22:40):
I mean, you know, fromgoing to college preparatory high school, it
kind of gets to a point whereyou're like, this might not be good
to say out loud, but Idon't want to read as much anymore.
That's a really dumb thing to sayout loud. It really is. Trust
me. As soon as it wascoming to the forefront of my mind,
I was like, don't admit that, but yeah, I mean, you
know, to say like I'm likea book before bed type of guy.
No, I'd like to be.I'm just not the wife does that a
(23:03):
little bit more than I do?All right, Still a number of things
we're gonna get to as we kindof transition into the official start of the
show. Right around the corner,in case you missed it, we have
discussed a little bit about Ryan Stanick. He's now Seattle Mariner. That is
what precipitated all this officiating talk thatwe've just had. Again, I'll tease
(23:25):
this and we'll talk about it withWex obviously as well. I was driving
in and we got a text fromfrom Wex and it was something I had
kind of heard rumblings about but hadn'treally seen. And then he gave us.
Then he gave us the real trumpcard. Underneath he could potentially,
if he wanted to, you know, just leave the show that day and
(23:45):
go get a sneak peek the Texansnew threads. How much are you cause?
And again, I know how thissounds coming from me even before you
join the show. This is avery contentious talking point on the program because
I would get mad at the Texansfor doing their their feature Jersey's Day on
the calendar when it would come out, because I'd be like, you know,
(24:08):
who cares start winning games? Now. The problem with that was they
weren't even trying to be a seriousfranchise at the time, which is probably
why I got as mad as Idid about it, and I didn't usually
get that mad, and WEX woulddo the usual, Well, this is
something that every team does, youknow, So why are you getting mad
at the Texans. Well I'll tellyou why I was getting mad at the
(24:29):
Texans because they weren't serious. ButI am probably as excited as I've ever
been to see a team. Theonly team that cataptus is the Rockets.
Finally, after all these years ofme begging and pleading, you know,
get get it right and go backto the ketchup of mustards. You know
what this is. This is JoeBiaginie. This is a guy who's not
(24:49):
very good, not very funny, having goofy jokes because we have patients for
goofy hijinks from organizations and all oftheir you I don't know, showing Davis
Mills walking out onto the field beforethe game and having a post ready to
ball out against who because it ain'tgonna be against those guys today. I'm
sorry, Sorry Davis, you caughtastray. But that's when your team is
(25:11):
not winning and you have that onsocial media. Look at the mentions,
and you're gonna have You're gonna havethis true who are just like I don't
care, man like actually care aboutwinning, and then I will care enough
to not be snarky and mean backto you in return. And I don't
know if blocks were being handed outby the social media team over there,
but they're probably warranted at a certainpoint, but also too as well,
(25:33):
if you were actually doing your job, you're probably like, yeah, we're
not very good. So if peopleare upset with us, I kind of
get it. I get it too. I get it too, but I
also get I get the vitriol Ido, but I am I'm looking forward
to, uh what's revealed. It'sperceived when your team is that bad that
you're you're kidding yourself, You're bsingyourself of just how bad things are.
(25:56):
And I understand, you know, you want to be positive, you want
to be hey, you know,we love our guys, all that kind
of stuff. Yeah, that's fine. But again, now that the Texans
are winning again, when they dothings like that, like CJ. Stroud
coming out of the tunnel. Thenyou have people who are like the Spurs
guy with you the other night, that are like, oh, he's gonna
put up four tds today a forourtuddy day from CJ. And that's what
(26:18):
winning does for you. It's kindof like a head coach that has all
these goofy sayings and all these thingswritten on the wall and T shirts and
everything like that. When you're makingSuper Bowl runs, people enjoy it.
When you're going four five wins ina season, people start to just say,
dude, stop talking. Yeah,no, that's absolutely the case.
And fortunately for the Astros, theyhave been winning. You know, when
(26:40):
they change their uniforms, it wasat the beginning of a very rocky run.
But I still like the new Digs. Oh I love them. I
mean because it's kind of a throwbackto the ones that everybody loved, the
you know, the Orange Star andyou know, being able to kind of
get back to when things were firstreally good in the eighties. But you
know, it's also I mean,I'm with you on the ketchup and mustards
(27:02):
with the rockets. I mean,is it necessarily a coincidence? That the
Pistons finally won a world title whenthey went back to the Red, White,
and Blues. I don't know thatthat was literally twenty years ago this
year. Crazy scoring like eighty pointsa game. Don't like that with Ben
Wallace and Shauncey Billups. Don't likerip Hamil that that's twenty years ago this
year, which means the Rockets arecoming up on the thirtieth anniversary as of
(27:23):
literally this year, and twentieth highschool reunion coming up this fall. For
me, man, damn man,we're all getting old, all right.
When we come back the official startof the A Team. There is a
lot of NFL stuff we're gonna getto on the program today. Mentioned again,
wex will be along to start thefour o'clock hour in all likelihood.
(27:44):
Dan Matthews sitting in as we continuehere on a Friday edition of the program.
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named athim talking your Team series, Adam
Clinton and Adam Wexler or DA TeamA. What's Up Houston three h two
(28:07):
here on Sports Talk seven ninety eight. Team officially underway, A little bonus
coverage coming your way, and theprior a couple of segments or so.
Dan Matthews is sitting over there,Adam Clanton right here, Connor McGovern sitting
in for Dan, and then we'llall do the shuffle. Lex will be
here in about an hour or so. Yeah, it'll be like a hockey
line change there. I'll jump overthe wall, skate over, and you
(28:32):
know, he'll skate off the iceand we'll be back in our normal rotation.
I can't decide what I think ifHouston gets a hockey team. By
the way, I would love tosee it happen, but I'm wondering how
it would go long term. Ifit happens. I'm telling you right now,
I've said it numerous times. WhenI lived in a city that had
an NHL team, I would bea season ticket holder. So if that's
the case, then I will definitelybe following suits. So let's make it
(28:55):
happen. Come on, Arrows comeabsolutely, absolutely, and I can I
can only imagine what the names.I mean, just bringing Arrows back.
So say the natural thing. No, absolutely, it is. The logo
is sick. The gear would beamazing, Like, yes, absolutely,
bring it back. You know wecan have the old Mike Freer days.
Dave Tippett, all of those guys. Yeah, I watched Little Arrows hockey
when I was a kid, bigCalder Cup Championship fan. It was even
(29:18):
pre Calder Cup days, that's right, even before that, I think,
when they were in the IHL,before the AHL. So all right,
that'll conclude the honkey time. Iwas gonna say, most people out there
are like, well for the show. I listened to a show in the
Midwest, in Canada and in theNortheast. I don't even know how much
they get talked about. I meanit calls next. They'll get talked about
if there's a team. Oh yeah, sports talk, but I wonder how
(29:41):
much. So one of my nerdythings that I have done in the past,
I haven't done it as much anymoreas I would listen around to other
cities. And of course, youknow New York sports radio, which people
think is like the Godfather Church ofsports radio. It's not. It's awful
radio because all it is is youknow, Alan Si acid Al, what
do you got. I mean, that's that's basically what New York sports radio
(30:02):
is in a nutshell. But likelistening in any of those stations and like
they're talking the Rangers, the Islanders, all of this, and I get
it, it's huge up there, but it's crazy. What can you really
talk like? Like, people allthe time will ask me, Hey,
why don't you guys do more soccertalk? What do you want me to
talk about? Like? What doyou seriously want me to talk about when
it comes to soccer? Yeah,it doesn't translate it. It's not a
(30:23):
radio sport to talk. I agree, And you know what, there are
more. There are better radio sports, and I think you just got done
hearing one a little less than anhour ago. Is the Astros dropping their
spring training matchup today to the Philliessix to three. The final, Corey
Jolks did get a homer, butSpencer Araghatty did not exactly perform well in
his outing, as he gave upfive runs in his three innings of work.
(30:48):
So that's the update on that. We'll get you your JV update.
Don't worry. I told you guys. There's a lot of NFL stuff as
well today and along the course ofthe next three hours, and well we
will revisit once Wex gets in here, because I definitely want to pick his
brain about a couple of these items. In the NFL. So the and
(31:10):
I talked about this at about Ustalking about it yesterday. Running backs right
now in the NFL, And Ibring this up for a couple of reasons.
Saquon Barkley's been tied with the Texansand now he's being tied with another
team in his division, which Ithink is fascinating. There's actually an there's
a couple of fascinating things going onwith the Giants right now. So Saquan's
(31:32):
there, they're not going to franchisehim. So who's he flirting with.
He's flirting with the Eagles. AndI'm like, if you're looking at everybody
who's saying, Saquon Barkley to theTexans would be fantastic. Look, it's
a nice, young, talented quarterback. I think about adding the dynamic of
(31:52):
him in that backfield and how itcould make, you know, things go
even better for that offense, andon and on and on. What if
you're already a little bit more wellnot a little bit a lot more established,
to the point where you've gone tothe super Bowl in the last three
hundred and seventy five plus days, whatever it is, and you add that
dynamic to a Jalen Hurts that is, and you're it's addition by subtraction.
(32:16):
Not like the Giants were going tobe a roadblock at all. But look
at the Cowboys in your division, and now all of a sudden you're talking
about adding Saquon Barkley to the Eagles. That division just got a lot more
juicy. If that's indeed what wouldhappen. The Eagles are kind of a
little bit of a buyer beware whenit comes to the Texans of don't just
(32:37):
think that your success is going totranslate to the following year. We see
it all the time in the NFLof oh yeah, and this team looks
great. I mean, were theyninety seven the year before? They went
to the Super Bowl the year before? No, no, I'm talking about
the Giants. Oh yeah. Imean, you know, so they were
a team that people thought was goingto take a step forward. I mean,
they they were at least were notin the dregs where it's you know,
(32:58):
hey, we really need a coupleof years of good drafts to kind
of pull us out of this. But I mean the Eagles are exactly one.
I mean, you thought that comingoff that Super Bowl run, the
defense being the way that it was, Jalen Hurts playing the way that he
did, you got aj Brown back, you got Dallas Goddard. Oh,
by the way, we just addedDeAndre Swift over from the Lions, so
we feel like he makes our offenseeven better. And it was just something
that about midway through the season justcompletely got off the tracks so much to
(33:22):
the point where people thought that NickSirianni was out. Like you had the
talking heads on TV saying he's lostthat locker room. I mean, you
just don't even see remotely close tothe same amount of respect that it looked
like they had for him a yearbefore. And people also point to remember
him coming off the field that Mondaynight they beat the Chiefs and he's yelling
(33:43):
up at Chiefs fans. People wonderedif that started to with like players in
the locker room being like, comeon, man, like you're gonna tell
us to be composed, and thenyou're doing crap like that, Like how
are we necessarily supposed to listen toyou? Like, just just walk off
the field, man, Nobody wantsto hear from you. Yeah, I
just if you're so, I said, there's two things going on with the
Giants. If you're talking about SaquonBarkley, you know, leaving the Giants,
(34:07):
but not leaving the division, stayingthere and he's with the Eagles.
That's definitely interesting. What I meansthey probably keep aj Brown too, because
I mean that would be you know, thought about as well as Hey,
I mean, is there a retoolingthat's needed? And if that's the case,
then we gotta dump this guy that'sgot a you know, a huge
contract coming his way. And sothen if you're the Giants, what are
(34:28):
you doing with both your backfield andthen also your quarterback position? Did you
see this story today from Schefter? So we all have kind of like,
I don't think we've assumed that RussellWilson was definitely going to sign with the
Steelers, but it felt like thingswere rapidly moving in that direction. Had
(34:49):
a meeting set up with them today, but he tweeted this morning Adam Schefter
that before traveling to Pittsburgh today,Russell Wilson stopped in New Jersey for what
one source described as a quote exploratorymeeting with the Giants. I mean,
(35:09):
I a lot less pressure, butyou just gave Daniel Jones all that money,
So what are you what are youdoing? You gave Daniel Jones four
years, one hundred and sixty millionjust last offseason, and believe me,
I don't I totally get why theywould look at another quarterback. And you
(35:30):
know, if you are looking tokind of bridge the gap to when you
could really get that franchise quarterback, you could do a lot worse, I
suppose than a thirty five year oldRussell Wilson. But it would just be
crazy to me that we could potentiallysee a Giants team that not only doesn't
have Saquon Barkley, but then maybedoesn't even have Daniel Jones starting and Russell
(35:52):
Wilson as their starting quarterback in twentytwenty four. Well, Daniel Jones,
I mean, it's the old sayingyou're folding a hand that you know is
not gonna win because he's not goingto win. Can he at least,
you know, play capably at theposition. Sure, but if you're trying
to overtake the other teams that we'vebeen talking about, that's not going to
happen. They're at number six inthe draft. So that's the other part
of it as well, is ifyou get Russell Wilson. You kind of
(36:14):
feel like, all right, wegot flexibility there. I even think if
you get Russell Wilson, it doesn'tpreclude you from, say, if you're
in a position to get a Drakemay Or. I know a lot of
people are talking JJ McCarthy and Godbless you if you go that route.
I would not do it backside JonesMcCarthy. I mean, it's here's the
thing that I've been getting into withpeople on Twitter about JJ McCarthy. Oh,
(36:34):
you know, the intangibles all ofthis. I say, that's great.
Why wasn't it showcased at Michigan?Well, you know what they wanted
to do offensive. I get allof that, but can I present you
Joe Burrow who played in an offenseand at a program that had no history
of quarterback play ever none. Hecreated it himself. Guys that are supposed
(36:57):
to be in that position to bedrafted, they create eight the plays and
make them happen. A lot ofpeople think that's got to come from dual
threat options. No it doesn't.I mean, Joe Burrow can be mobile
enough, but it's not his firstmove. It's not what he's going to
do. And he was a guythat was able to create on the field.
I didn't necessarily see a guy inJJ McCarthy that created out there.
(37:17):
And it's also too playing for thequarterback whisper that he was. Wouldn't you
think he'd want to feature him becausethat makes him look even better? Yeah,
I'm just I'm stunned at the Thisis why the NFL is king because
we're talking about, like the playerswe're talking about going to the teams we're
talking about are not like eye popping, attention grabbing. This is amazing storyline
(37:43):
stuff, and yet at the sametime it's still it's still interesting. Well,
here's the beauty of it all aswell, we're doing the same show
for somebody else that we were doinga year ago. Here. Yeah,
I mean there are even people talkingabout, well, you know, you
could do a lot worse than Jimmygarossee now what I'm getting at? Like,
Okay, the three win Houston Texansand they weren't again they got CJ
(38:07):
in April, Nobody was talking aboutthem the way we're talking about them now
until several weeks in two the season. People were all talking about, what
the hell are you even doing ofnot going to a pro day, not
going to Twyce Young's pro day, which it's kind of window dressing at that
point. I mean, it kindof is almost like, you know,
the Who's who party, Oh hey, they're here, they're putting in FaceTime
(38:30):
kind of deal. Is a lotof times when you see head coaches and
gms there because you see scouts, they can get the footage if they need
to see it, and they canbe able to make an informed decision.
Talk to these guys at senior bowls, maybe even you go to a college
game here or there and talk withguys and their coaches and everybody, trust
me, there's enough information for youto be able to make an informed decision.
But it was also too at thetime, the perception here was you
(38:52):
don't know what you're doing, Likeyou seriously. I mean, we were
talking about this being the final seasonof Nick Cassario, and all of a
sudden, after the first two draftpicks that he made last year, people
were like, the hell would youget rid of that guy? For Yeah?
Yeah, Well that's everything changes quickly. That's again goes back to the
original point. When it comes tothe NFL and Wyatt's King, there's a
(39:15):
number of reasons, and that's certainlyone of them. We'll continue here in
our number one of three here ona Friday edition of The A Team Sports
Talk A seven ninety. Dan Matthewsover there, AC right here, Connor
McGovern govern, I should say kindenough to sit in. Wex will be
along in a little less than anhour or so, and we'll continue on
here on a Friday edition of theprogram. Yeah us write this is a
(39:37):
Trillo jeebubbet get into Babe Bo whomwe roll over with the A Team,
Adam Wexland Adam Klann right now, let's go two Adams for the price of
one on Sports Talk seven ninety TheA Team rolling along here on Sports Talk
seven ninety AC right here, DanMatthews, the show Killers, sitting in
Wex's chair. There's two things thatI've seen people point out on Twitter with
(40:00):
that stantic balk that we were talkingabout last year as Junior Valentine incident.
Yeah, and a shout out touh Jake DC six on Twitter for uh
you know, posting the video againand it's Junior Valentine. He looks like
a nerdy guy that upsets somebody atthe bar and he's never been in a
fight before, and he's kind ofnervous and he's like trying his best to
(40:22):
Hey, I need to try tolook cool. I need to try to
look tough, and you just can't. And if Ryan Stanek was storming towards
you, I mean, he's he'sgot the look. I mean, he's
a guy that probably could play outsidelinebacker if he had played you know,
football, he was he was thatlarge of a dude. So it was
it wasn't only that, it wasalso whoever the homeplate umpire went total ump
show with Manny emphatically pointing at theplate of you get to come home.
(40:47):
It's like, oh, just pointat all you have to do, very
joy Crawford of him, you gotto you gotta make yourself the center of
attention. That's like you know NBAreps whenever a charges call, you know,
they'll do that or no charge,They'll just point, you know,
just point. I don't need theshow. Like the blocking foul would happen
and Joey Crawford would do the littleskip before he did the hip thrust and
(41:13):
was it Billy Kennedy that will dothe travel call of like kind of like
almost like a little bit of astrut. I think he's still doing it
well. And I think Bill Kennedy'sthe guy who's he's the Warren piece of
NBA officials'. He's very but it'seloquent and you never walk away not understanding
what he said. And a viralmoment too as well, of one of
the ones since we started going tothe NBA referees explaining the call on a
(41:37):
review where he was willing to riskit all for the chick that walked by.
Oh yes, I forgot about that. Yeah, that's uh, there's
down there in any NBA arena,in any given night, there's going to
be talented. It showed me like, see, if Scott Foster did something
like that, I'd be like,oh, that's creepy, But when Bill
Kennedy did it, I was like, the guy seems kind of funny.
Actually, I actually think I likethis guy all right? You know who
(42:00):
else? You probably like? JustinVerlander. And as we've been doing so
often during this segment throughout the thecourse of spring training, especially since the
hiccup happened, we've had to gowith our official unofficial signature segment. Uh,
the Justin Verlander as we call itthe JV update update. It was
(42:21):
today JV update. All right,So we're not gonna we're never going to
outperform WEX when it comes to theseyou know, vocal stylings now. But
it's good news. It's about asgood news as you could get our own.
Brian McTaggart, friend of the show, friend of the station, makes
(42:45):
weekly appearances and to steal a linefrom you, a proud University of Houston
Cougar. Proud University of Houston Cougar. I'll say that line tonight later on
when Matt Thomas decides to start workingfor a change. He tweeted four ish
hours ago that uh and again thiswas a quote tweet of his own tweet
where he had a picture of JustinVerlander throwing from the bump. This morning,
(43:07):
he quote tweeted that and said Verlandersaid he ramped up the intensity through
sixty ish pitches and was throwing inthe low nineties. And again, he
can throw sixty ish, he canthrow thirty ish, you can throw whatever
the key is to feel good afterhe's done doing said work, whatever amount
it is. Yeah, it's oneof those, you know, like last
(43:28):
night Steph Curry rolled his ankle, and it's, oh, you know,
we gotta wait and see. Imean, that's with Verlander right now.
That's where we're at, is wegot to do the old wait and see.
I'm guessing tomorrow probably they'll get someworking in the morning before they get
on the Cacti Park field for springtraining action, and I'm sure they'll put
a microphone or two in front ofJoe Aspada to get an update and we'll
(43:51):
see. And if I had toguess what it is with the numbers that
you just threw out there and theintensity, so I guess I answered the
second stands of that song he didthrow intensely. Is that we're talking live
hitters next week. That's a goodthing because you know he'll miss the opener.
But if we're wanting to get himin like game one of the Rangers
(44:14):
series or whatever game that would be, which is in Arlington, is it
not? First series is up inArlington and Yankees Blue Jays here you go
up to Arlington, so it's nota far road. It's another one too
that gets one of those Apple TVgames as well. That'll probably be the
one where he pitches. He makeshis twenty four debut. That'd be fun,
stupid Apple TV game. Well,it'd be fun from the standpoint that
(44:37):
he's making his debut. It'll benot so fun from the standpoint of if
you don't have a subscription to thisout of other twenty services, you can't
see it. Well, it's globelifField as well, which is you know,
the Astros home away from home, which is actually better than their home,
which, by the way, goodfor the Rangers. You know,
the Cactus League home run leader isWyatt Langford. They probably shared that on
(44:57):
their social media. He's gonna beawesome, that's meaningful. He could be.
I mean, there's no doubt thatthey've got talent in their farm system.
How could they not after picking ashigh as they did for as long
as they did, for sucking aslong as they did. Last year was
all about to me, the twomega contracts you gave out actually performing up
(45:19):
to that money, and then havingsome young talent that either performed up to
expectations or in a few cases Iwould say, just performed out of their
minds. I need to go backand double check here, But if I'm
not mistaken, Corey Seger is aquestion mark to start the season as well.
It's Nathaniel Low. That's a questionmark. Man. Now maybe Seeger
(45:40):
is as well. The turtleneck isa question but the last time I checked
Nathaniel Low because it's an oblique nowthat is a big deal. Well,
you know, mock turtlenecks. They'retight, so you know, it's one
of those things that it's kind of, you know, tugging on the rest
of the body there. So youknow, maybe that's that's an issue for
him, so soon mock if Imean, but in all seriousness, that
(46:02):
is what that's what kept out.I believe both Jordan had one last year,
I believe, but did now toothey have one. I think he
did if I'm not mistaken. Andyou know it's one of those things someone's
driving around right now in six totwo. Who do you go is not
know this dude? It was abouttwo hundred days ago that man, Yeah,
exactly. So you know, I'vegot a lot of meaningless stuff up
(46:23):
here. That's one that probably slidoff the conveyor belt there for a second.
But no, I mean they happenall the time. They happened to
hitters more than they have in thepictures. I've been told it's because of
just the poll that you have muchmore than it's a different direction of poll
for pictures, whereas you know picturesare more elbows and shoulders, that that's
(46:45):
the issues. But you know,it kind of circles back with JV what
me and you've talked about shoulders I'mnot concerned with and people say, how
can you not be because we've seenit in the past. And it's also
too it's a trained response from uswith this organization, if we're being honest
now, we don't necessarily know howJoe is going to handle situations like this,
but we had almost kind of afootball like approach when it came to
(47:07):
injuries. Oh yeah, hey, they'll be out there, not you know,
we're shutting them down for a littlebit. Like where's the consistency here?
I'm kind of trying to follow alonghere, but you won't let me.
You want consistency in sports of anykind, well, especially too with
injuries. I mean, the alltime best was Kubiak. You know,
hey, hey, Gary House,so and so he's got a knee.
(47:27):
Well, I know he's got aknee, but how's it feeling. No,
he did that a lot, andit was always the body part and
then him being a dang good kidand battling and fighting and of course battle
fighting. It was all on thetable there, one of the nicest guys
out. That's all me. Andyeah, all of that I gotta look
in the mirror. All that stuffthat gets that will grind on you as
(47:47):
the losses. Again, what wewere talking about earlier, it's stuff like
that that people will point to whenyou're losing and saying dude, like that
was always the thing with him.Dude shows some fire and it was,
oh well, he shows it behindthe scenes. It's just like we're focusing
on the wrong things here. Yeah, from time to time during the show,
like every segment, I'll get distractedby something I see fly by on
(48:12):
my feed if you will. I'mnot touching this subject. But yes,
I'm aware of what's going on,Rockets fans. I'm very aware. I
understand that you're very aware about it. And I can tell you the amount
of segments that myself, that Danand that especially WEX are going to spend
(48:32):
on that subject is whatever is lessthan zero. So I'm just letting you
know that I know that you knowI know that you know that I know,
and I also know that none ofus are going to be talking about
it to This is going to bethe second sopranos mentioned from me in the
last couple of days, and maybeit becomes a daily thing. I don't
know. Tony Soprano once famously said, I don't get involved in matters of
(48:55):
the heart. I don't get involvedin matters of the heart. I don't
want to talk about Jeffrey or whicheverof the Jordan kids that got with Larsa
Pippen. It's all. I don'twant to do it. I definitely don't
want to do it with regards tothe Houston Rockets. So I'm aware of
it. I'm letting you guys knowthat we're all aware of it, and
(49:16):
we're not We're not We're probably nottalking about it. It's gonna be a
pretty close to zero. I mean, you know, it's yeah, it's
not happening for me. It's notabsolutely it's not happening. All right.
We'll continue here on a Friday editionof the A Team Sports Talk seven ninety.
Don't forget still to come. Nickelbacktickets we will be giving away about
(49:37):
an hour from now you're gonna wantto know your nickelback trivia, So just
giving you a heads up that that'scoming as we take you up until six
o'clock on a Friday edition of theprogram. Listen to Sports Talk seven ninety
on the free iHeartRadio app. It'sall your music, sports podcasts, and
talk free never sounded so good.It is the a team here on Sports
(49:59):
Talk seven nine. You know what, going back to the Russell Wilson stuff,
color me shocked that there is morethan one team that is maybe realistically
interested in at least one year withhim. That's the deal he's gonna do,
So he's getting his money from Denver. He didn't have to worry about
(50:20):
that. But the fact that maybeI don't know if I'm more surprised at
which scenario, the fact that thereare two teams at least that we know
of, that are more than apassing interest in him, or the fact
that there are two situations where theyou know, the climate is ripe to
have him join the team and itnot be laughed out of the building by
(50:42):
both the administration and the fan base. Well it's also too I mean,
it's two teams that are doing whata lot of NFL teams do. Now
they're punting. I mean, youfinally realize, hey, this guy is
not going to be a reason wewin. You see. I feel like
there's three different categories of quarterbacks. There's the ones you win because of they
are the ones you win with, and there's ones who you just can't win
with altogether. And you know,I think that, you know, at
(51:06):
least the Giants look at Daniel Jonesand say, you know, if we
had the right crew around him, maybe we could win with him. But
it wasn't going to be because ofhim. And he's not necessarily in the
quality where you're like, well,we just can't win with this guy.
Russell Wilson, I mean, he'sintriguing to teams. And that's why it's
so funny. I heard somebody onone of the overnight shows here when I
was driving home one night of saying, he's a backup at best in the
(51:29):
NFL. A sixty six percent passerlast year, over three thousand yards,
twenty six touchdowns and eight interceptions,a ninety eight point zero quarterback rating.
Yeah, he's a backup. Stayon overnights. You're you're doing great,
you know. I mean, it'sjust like it's laughable to think that,
oh, well, this guy's gonnabe lucky to get a job in the
NFL. Like Kelly is, youhave two teams already who are willing to
(51:51):
say, yeah, if we hadthis guy, we upgrade immediately for the
production. He gives you no look, Daniel Jones and whoever they are trotting
out there in Pittsburgh at any giventime. You know, whether it's Mason
Rudolph was starting games for them. That's all you need to know about.
And again it's not the Steelers area situation where they're not quite ready made
(52:19):
around the quarterback position. In otherwords, if they just fix that,
they're going to be awesome. Butthey're further along than a lot of other
teams in similar position, you know, similar states of flux at that position.
You know what I'm saying. Quarterbackis also and we saw this paradigm
shift, and you know, wewere talking about this a couple of days
ago, where it used to beno matter what, early twenty tens,
(52:42):
we have to pay them. Wehave to pay them, like we can't
lose them. Do you really thinkhe's worth that money? Doesn't matter?
We don't want to go with whatwe don't know. At least we know
that they're good enough to do thejob, so that's good enough to keep
them around. College quarterback play hasgotten even better over the last few years.
The quote unquote pro offense, theI formation, it's gone out of
both leagues, so you don't havethat anymore because it's a boring, antiquated
(53:05):
old system that just doesn't work anymore. So now you've got you know,
quarterbacks in college running RPOs, doingdifferent types of things schematically that you do
on the NFL level. That guyswhen they get to the NFL there's not
as much of a learning curve anymore. It's verbage pretty much at that point.
You're telling them what to do,you know, from certain scheme points,
and you know ideas of how youwant to do it, and they're
(53:27):
ready to go. I mean, and look at the amount of quarterbacks that
have come into the league out ofcollege the last few years that have found
success quickly. It's because of howwell they were coached in college, and
it's also to the ability playing out. You're seeing the same thing now in
the NFL of teams that are withinthe top ten. If they kind of
fit into that category. And Idon't know where the Steelers are drafting.
I've told you where the Giants were, but it really opens up the idea
(53:50):
for you to say, hey, yeah, let's go with that guy,
and we think day one he's goingto be ready to go. Speaking of
the Giants, and speaking of youjust mentioned New York Talk sports Talk radio.
Did you see where is it?Greg Gianatti? You know what?
No, let me let me takeback that side. I actually like Geo.
(54:13):
Okay, there's there's others on hisstation that if I see anything from
them, I'm like, I stoppedlistening as soon as you mentioned their name.
You mentioned JJ McCarthy, because again, there's all these The Giants are
a They're an interesting, if notfascinating case this offseason because they could go
in a number of different directions ata number of different positions. It's not
(54:36):
just a quarterback position. But let'sjust take that one aside. Would they
be interested in drafting JJ McCarthy.Okay? Like, and again I see
her. So for those of youwho don't, you know, can't hear
over the radio, what Dan justdid. It was a textbook. Adam
Wesler eye roll. It was aneye roll. It was loud through the
(55:00):
nostrils, breathe, just to kindof like let you know, like I'm
getting ready for when you finally openthe gate and I can run out.
Yes, well, okay, soour boy that we're talking about here,
Greg Gionado. Is it Gionato orLeonado? Gianatti? Okay, Gianotti?
That guy? That guy as hegoes by Boomer and g o's the show.
(55:21):
He floated this idea, this isa quote. The Giants are going
to do the exact same thing theydid when they drafted Daniel Jones. They're
going to reach for JJ McCarthy, and we're going to be sitting saying if
they really wanted JJ McCarthy, theycould have traded back to get him,
just like we talked about with DanielJones. Then McCarthy's going to be the
(55:42):
quarterback for the Giants, and that'sgoing to be the end of Brian Dabole
and Joe Sheen. And it's it'sthe sixth pick too, don't forget.
It is kind of deja vu here. Well, I mean it's not quite
the Mitchell Trubisky situation, but Iremembered watching the draft that night with a
buddy of mine who was a diehardBears fan got bless them, and as
soon as they drafted Trubisky, hishead immediately hit the bar top in front
(56:05):
of us, not hard enough togive him a concussion, but you get
my point. Is a nice littlebuzzy. He was showing that, yes,
we've just done it again, andthe Giants used to not be that
organization like they're very what people usedto think of the Jets being. Okay,
I'm glad you said that, becausehe goes on and the scenario he
describes here as textbook Jets like you'resaying, or just textbook fill in the
(56:29):
blank organization that screws it up nomatter how many times, no matter how
many different ways, kind of likethe Texans used to be. JJ McCarthy
will be there for them, andthen some other team out there is going
to convince them that they would takeJJ McCarthy just like Dave Gettleman, it's
gonna happen again. I know fora fact the Giants love this kid,
and that means they don't care wherethey draft him. Here we go again.
(56:53):
What happened? When did the Giantsbecome the Jets? If this is.
Indeed, we went from talking aboutRussell Wilson having Glory Tory talks with
them to now they might cause Again, far be it from me. I've
said this on record. Not onlydo I not watch a ton of college
football, I just can't. Idon't have I don't have a room in
my life for both. I payattention. I know who's good, but
(57:15):
I'm not sitting there like I amon Sundays just soaking it all in.
But I do know this McCarthy, and again, everything's a crapshoot in the
NFL draft. It's why I don'tlike draft shows. I hate them actually,
because everybody's it's paralysis by analysis. It's up dudes, it's too damn
long of a process, and guysthat are too close to the top of
the draft are constantly miss misdiagnosed orwhatever you want to call it, good
(57:38):
or bad. Look at CJ.Shroud. No, it's one hundred percent
a great you know, a greatexample there. But it's also too people
look for reasons because you know,it's one of those hey have a take,
you know, have a prediction toit. Put yourself out there.
When it comes to the draft.People want to do the opposite. So
then that's how you get the Stwo test. That's how you get the
well you know in high school hedid this. That's how you get all
(57:59):
these different things that people can givethemselves an out and say, hey,
hey, hey, don't look atus. We didn't take them because you
know, we we had all allof this research to show that, you
know, he was going to besomebody that wasn't going to be a right
fit for organization. And it's justkind of to the point where, you
know, I heard somebody mention it, and I liked the idea. Move
the draft up, like, like, move it up? How far this
(58:22):
month? End of this month? Why? Why so basically a month?
Yeah? Why should it usually theend of April? Yeah, so why
shouldn't it be at the end ofthis month. I don't know, you're
closer to the combine pro days couldstill happen feasibly. They squeeze them all
in easily. They're what I'm sayingis college programs are doing nothing, and
(58:43):
I think that I honestly think theprospects would appreciate it more because you can
only work out so much in Florida, California and Arizona to get ready for
the draft and you've finally done enoughof Hey, I'm going to run my
fastest forty in Indianapolis, and thenyes, you can go catch the passes,
throw the passes, do all thosedifferent types of things in order to
try to impress teams out there.Yeah, but it's also too you know,
(59:05):
with all the love for JJ McCarthy, it's one of those things that
I actually was talking with somebody aboutthe other night, as I said,
why and they're more love for JordanTravis. I understand his leg exploded,
but if you give me those twoquarterbacks, I'm taking Jordan Travis over the
other guy that just won a nationaltitle because I've seen what that guy can
do. I've seen him get betterand I've seen him take over games in
the college level. I have notseen that from the other guy. And
(59:27):
that just part of me is justlike, Okay, if you're risking your
gig in all likelihood, like BrianBrian Daball would be, m you're you're
gonna do that for this kid.The only way I'm risking my my job
is if I have a If thisreally works, it saves us all.
If it's one of those. Okay, is he the player that could do
(59:50):
He's not see see And I feellike even I know that right. And
that's the thing as well, isthat you, if you're being honest with
yourself, say no, that's notgoing to be enough for for us to
be able to keep our jobs.If anything, it can only really go
the opposite direction. Then, likeas you said, everybody gets blown out.
Yeah, no I don't. Ithink it's more likely that's the way
that things go versus this. Soagain you're talking about JJ McCarthy and Russell
(01:00:15):
Wilson. If you're the Giants atquarterback Russell wow, yeah, well,
especially if you're gonna be using thenumber six pick on one of those.
I have a guy who is stillproductive at this level. And yes,
I get he's awkward, Yes Iget that. Is he's nursed and Daniel
Jones next year? Or is hemarketedly better? It sounds like Daniel Jones
(01:00:37):
is at least a likable guy.But if you're the paying time, I
don't care about being likable. IfI'm throwing for over six if I'm throwing
for over sixty percent completion, andI'm throwing for about thirty thirty five hundred
yards has nothing to do with this. Aaron Rodgers is not likable at all
for a lot of people, andwell, I do two but some people
don't. And that doesn't matter.Either. You play, you can play.
(01:00:58):
If you can't, you can't.And if you're paying Daniel Jones that
kind of money, but you're givingRussell Wilson the veteran's minimum because he's getting
the lion's share of his exorbitant salaryfrom the Denver Broncos, then just pretend,
just pretend that the money you justgave him Daniel Jones is going to
Russ Well, I mean, andthat would also be do you go,
(01:01:19):
you know, the the drafting aquarterback route, because I mean long term,
that would probably be the better optionfor you to do. And also
too, of who could be availableto you at that point. It's J.
J. McCarthy. I'm saying now, I'd much rather have Russell Wilson
because I know what Russell Wilson cando. There's a lot of I'm not
sure what this guy can. It'snot lost on me. The ability,
(01:01:42):
it's not lost on me. Thearm strength, it's not lost on me.
All these different types of things thathe could develop into being that guy.
And maybe I'm eating this microphone ina couple of years when he's a
pro bowler and an All Pro.I just don't think that he's going to
be that guy. Well, I'vebeen eating it all year about c J.
Stroud, so it's not that bad. Of course, that's here why
lesson as always? Thank God forc J. Stroud, you know,
(01:02:04):
marrying into an Ohio State family,I had a chance to see enough of
c J. Stroud. But withhim, that was the interesting thing is
people didn't think he did enough incollege. It was like, you've got
Marvin Harrison junior. Youve got aMecha Buka. Okay, you got Traveon
Henderson. You've got all these differenttypes of guys. I watched why aren't
you doing more? One game ofhis last year Georgia. Yeah, it
was the last game of the seasonand they took the ball out of his
(01:02:24):
hands. It's Ryan Day. Whatdo you expect? But yes, and
I was like he himself was winningthat game for a while to a point
where I'm like, all right,if the Texans get this guy on Draft
night again. Going back to myoriginal point, I'll maintain it. I
don't know one way or the other, but I felt good. I didn't
feel bad. I didn't feel likeI would feel if I were a Giants
(01:02:45):
fan and they used the number sixpick on JJ McCarthy. Let's put it
that way. Let's just also saythis from my draft analysis of a couple
of years ago, standing in frontof the guy talking to him at SEC
Media Days, I immediately as Iwas passing the microphone back and forth with
Rice Young, sink he's kind ofsmall. Yeah, Like, I mean,
that was a thing like to meis like I was like this.
(01:03:06):
I was saying that too, butI was going to translate to the I
wasn't nearly as eloquent about it.You better get in the weight room.
You better start eating a lot morefried foods. I mean, I don't
go with al Pacino about some someplatform some jambalaya, some platform cleats.
Did you like the jambalaya? Ohmy gosh, I'm taking over the Alba
cookie franchise, all right, finalsegment of the three o'clock Hours coming up

Talk seven ninety eight winding down thethree o'clock Howard is the a Team Sports
Talk seven ninety Matthews, what's that? Where did it go? What?
Three o'clock hour? It flew by? We were just we were we were
on the premises and it was flyingby us, just like our lives.
You'll see, Dan, when youhave a child, that's just gonna start
(01:04:55):
going so much faster. Dude. It's already doing that with me. Like
I mean, as I mentioned about, you know, the twentieth you know
reunion coming up next year. I'mlike the hell man, like, slow
down a little bit, all right, it's not great, especially on this
side of things now, you know, life wise, you'll be down before
you know it. It's saying, definitely triggering that direction too. I got
to make some better life choices. And no, we all do it at
(01:05:18):
any given time. Dan Matthew's overthere, ac right here. Connor McGovern
kind enough to sit in. We'llall do the little rotation when WEX gets
in here, sooner rather than later. I don't want to necessarily get into
the depths of this story. Buthow much of that Dynasty New England Patriots
(01:05:38):
Apple TV documentary documentary Have you watchedof the Patriots? The it's called The
Dynasty, The New England I gotup to right before the chase for perfection?
Did you see or have you readabout I guess when Brady spoke to
the team about deflate Gate. Ihave not seen that part yet, so
(01:06:00):
I had forgotten. You might haveforgotten this. I don't know, remember
when Darrell Reeves was a patriot?See. And that's the thing too,
is like you remind yourself like,oh, Chad Johnson was a patriot for
right. I mean that was alsotoo like part of that where they were
making, you know, these trades, I mean Randy Moss. When they
traded for Randy Moss, people thought, oh, he's washed, he didn't
have it anymore, and he provedpretty quickly, No, I still got
(01:06:24):
it. I'm still that guy.I just think that this is fascinating.
When Deflategate happened, he apparently, according to Revs, addressed the team,
and he was because he was theone that was at the storm, at
the center of the storm. Youknow, spygate was more about the coaching
(01:06:45):
staff. It involved the Jets,so it was I don't know, I
felt like even though that was probablymore like over the line or whatever you
want to call it, when whenthat's so Belichick too with it, like
what can you tell us about spygate? Yeah, I've already covered that,
you know, that's how you answerthat question. Like, I know,
(01:07:06):
we make fun of him. Hehe handled the media the way most NFL
coaches should if they're not going totell you anything anyways. And it's kind
of like Marshawn Lynch, I'm justhearing out to get fined. He was
just more eloquent about how he saidit. He was saying the same thing
every week. I will say this. I mean with Belichick, you know,
(01:07:27):
I had a good track record. The few times that I've asked him
a question is maybe it was becauseI asked him a question about football.
You asked him a question about football, he'll talk. Yeah, But if
it's that's why he's there to talkabout, Hey, who's gonna be your
starting quarterback? I suppose we'll findout Sunday. That was always my favorite.
I remember, you know, JohnMcClean. I remembered he had asked
him that final game the nine seasonwhere it was Texans win, Let's wait
(01:07:51):
and see what happens with everybody else. And I think that who was it?
I don't think Edelman was quite himselfjust yet. But I think it
was well and like other players, and I loved his response in the conference
call, he laughed for a secondand goes, I suppose we'll see John.
Yeah, well I could see thattoo. Or it was I'm sure
(01:08:11):
they'll be there Sunday or something likethat. You know, it was it
was still being vague, but itwas Okay, Hey, this guy's got
a little personality. That's fun.That's that's nice to see. I like
that. Well, uh, flatek deflate Gate happened obviously with regards to
that the Colts game the AFC Championshipgame back in twenty fourteen, and you
(01:08:32):
know, the allegation that Brady hadordered the deliberate deflation of the football is
used in the game to give thePatriots an advantage, gripping and throwing them
in the cold. After he appealedhis suspension, he ended up being forced
to sit out the first four gamesof the twenty sixteen season. Patriots were
also fined one million and forced toforfeit two picks in the twenty sixteen NFL
(01:08:55):
Draft. Read this, this iswhere he comes in, said, when
did flate gate happen? This isa quote, and Tom was the headliner
of the whole situation. He addressedus as a team. You could tell
he was distraught. He would,as he did with the media, deny
to his teammates that he had anythingto do with the footballs being deflated in
that game against the Colts. Andwhat Revis said was that he tried to
(01:09:15):
back this up with the team bytelling the players he would never do anything
to jeopardize their season. Quote,he said, this is something I wouldn't
do. I would not ruin thisseason for us. The allegations are false.
And Revas went on to say hewas actually balling his eyes out in
front of us, and that DannyAmendola went on to say Tom can be
a very fiery person, but hecan also be emotional. It took a
(01:09:39):
massive toll on him because of hiskids, and according to Amendola, that
was because they were hearing about thedeflate Gates scandal from fellows, students and
teachers at their school. So that'swhy it really got to Tom Brady,
who's not a guy you would thinkof as much of a crier. The
(01:10:00):
NFL Network thing a few years agowhere it was I think the Brady six
or whatever, and when he finallygets drafted, he's remembering back to that
and he's like, my parents areso supportive, and he's it's it's now
become a meme of him where he'sgot the longer hair and he's wiping away
tears, all of that. SoI've a least seen that, but I
mean, he can do it.It's like Jordan, right, it happens
(01:10:21):
well, And it's funny you saythat. I actually thought about that today
of the Kobe memorial where yeah,he goes and damn it, he did
it to me again. Yeah, and everybody started laughing. Was already out
there and then he did. Butthe funny thing about that is if you
watch the Last Dance, there isa whole section after they finally break through
the Pistons and win the first titlethey I mean, the Lakers won game
(01:10:45):
one of that of that finals.Nobody ever remembers that, and then the
Bulls. The way it's characterizes, well, we just played a terrible game
and we barely lost. We're gonnakill these guys, and they did.
They run the next four won thetitle. He gets to the locker room
and he's crying and guys like Idon't remember who all the quotes were,
but they were just like, thisis a guy we had never seen this
(01:11:08):
from. Well, it was aguy that most of them hated, I
mean, just because of how hewas. And remember he had the whole
thing. You don't want to playthat way, don't play that way,
right, and I mean you understand. I mean it makes them who he
is, and that's that's what youknow. It's fun and it's fascinating to
be able to kind of get intothe mindset of the players who are the
best at what they do. Andyou know, I mean, let's take
(01:11:28):
another example of the golf example ofTiger and who he was. He was
a stone cole killer on the course. And then once his dad passed and
also too everything happened with the forearmto the back window, all that kind
of stuff, you saw a differentguy. You saw a much more likable
guy. You saw a much moreyou know, personable guy, even though
he was always loved on the tour. I mean, you had a guy
who was showing up the tour eventssaying hi to his competitors. On the
(01:11:51):
tee, they're kind of looking aroundsaying, who the hell is this guy?
It was crazy. It was absolutelycrazy to see and it was.
It's it's interesting. I haven't beenable to I can't. I didn't like
hate on the Patriots the way alot of people did. But it's more
about their fans. I just can'tstand Boston sports fans in general. Well,
(01:12:14):
it's kind of been around them inperson. Well, it's also too
that little kid that had the signof I don't know any other way,
it's like, screw you, man. Yeah, it's also too. You
go through Logan Airport, right whenyou go through security at one of the
checkpoints there, they have all ofthe banners from all the teams that have
won, and it's kind of likewhat again. Another sec football example Alabama
fans who are lamenting what life willbe like now, and most people are
(01:12:36):
looking at them and saying, dude, for fifteen years, screw you.
When the Astros run is finally over, whenever that is, nobody's gonna feel
sorry for you. They already don't. And I mean that's part of it
as well as it kind of leadsinto another point of all of this is,
man, when you're going through them, enjoy them, like, don't
just expect that this is going tobe the case. That's why I loved
that JV gave that speech last year. Think about what you guys have done,
(01:12:59):
because this is unheard of, Liketeams don't do this. This This
isn't an expectation. It's a hope. The Rangers are about to find that
out, and we've made it intoan expectation. Yeah, I mean,
can you imagine the day that thatwe're gonna do a show on here that
they don't make an alcs and inthe amount of reaction on that call screen
right there of it's over. It'sall it's all these different types of things.
It's say, hey man, whydo you bring that up right now?
(01:13:21):
I'm just saying, like when you'rewhen you're in it, like,
don't immediately start to oh man,you know, but what's coming next?
I mean, I understand the inclinationto do that, but brother, enjoy
it. He's very wex blanket ofyou. No, but like, I
mean, look, sometimes I willbring the wet blankets. You brought it
yesterday, as we pointed out inthe show reposting. So you know,
(01:13:44):
everybody's got to have their turn. We've all got to do it. We're
gonna have our turn with the fouro'clock hour coming up next to you a
lot. Do you want me totalk like them too? Yeah? As
we go to break, like howwould how would WEX send us to break?
Aren't we doing a signature seg Nowit's a Friday, We're not doing
a signature segment. Maybe they're realWex will be along in the four o'clock
hour. I have a feeling hewill sooner rather than later. Here on
(01:14:04):
the eight Team, two lifelong Houstonsports guys named Adam Talking Your Teams series,
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler are theA Team, a power number two
(01:14:25):
of a Friday edition of The ATeam. Here on Sports Talk seven ninety
wex on his way, Dan Matthewsin the saddle, Adam Clinton with you
as well, Connor McGovern producing, just working just overtime. Is just killing
this guy right now for one day. No, he's good. Appreciate him
sticking around. And we've touched ona lot of topics over the first hour
(01:14:48):
and change. Here is the Astroskind of got done early with their six
' three loss and their latest springtraining outing to the Phillies five runs,
including a two run homer at theexpense of spaghetti. Today, Spencer Aroonatti,
not having the best outing, didget a Corey Jolks siding once again.
(01:15:11):
He had a solo shot to getthe Astros on the board late in
the game, sixth inning variety. So that's a little bit of that.
We talked about Justin Verlander, thefact that he threw sixty ish pitches off
the mound earlier today. According toour own Brian McTaggart. Obviously, the
next step, as it has beenwith most of Justin verlanders physical activities lately,
has been to check in and seehow he feels right after or I
(01:15:33):
guess the day after. So obviouslyhave touched on that. I have touched
on a lot of NFL news andnotes, an inordinate amount of Giants discussion
on the show today. But that'sjust basically because they're the latest team that
is not only being tied to youknow, where's Saquon Barkley gonna play that's
not New York Giants next year, but also are they a team in the
(01:15:56):
running for the I don't even wantto call them the Russell Wills and Sweepstakes,
but that's kind of what it's becoming. The most the most pathetic small
time sweepstakes ever in NFL history.Maybe for a quarterback well, I mean
only to be rivaled by this timelast year. Of Well, like I
said earlier, you could do alot worse than Jimmy Garoppolo. The problem
(01:16:18):
is you can. And it's oneof those things of oh, is it
such a precipitous jump over Davis Mills. I don't think so. So if
the Texans had gone that route, they would have been in what they've been
as their franchise existence. Where weare right now has never been a thing
here Deshaun. I understand it was, but it was how it ended that
(01:16:38):
tarnished the beginning of that of thinkingthis is our guy, We've got him.
Plus he put up big numbers hislast year and it didn't matter,
which is still I think one ofthe top five sports anomalies that blows the
mind of one. Adam Lexler. He would always talk about all those stats
he put up, and he didgo back and look at him, and
it was for nothing. I'm gonnago a cool kid talk here. I
(01:17:00):
usually try not to do it becauseI just think it's disingenuous and it's dumb.
I don't talk like this, butthe I'm him moments, how many
of them with DeShawn during his Texanstenure could you point to and say,
man like, yeah, he isthe guy that we hoped we were getting
out of Clemson. The collision ofthe defenders behind him as he made that
move in the playoff game against theBills. Okay, his first ever start
(01:17:23):
on the Thursday night game where heran for forty nine yards. I want
to say for that touchdown against theBengals. I'm sure I'm missing an obvious
one. But then let's look atCJ. Stroud boom every week Steelers game,
Bucks game, the final game ofthe regular season, SNATI Colts Cincinnati.
(01:17:45):
I mean, you see, youget my first playoff game exactly,
So over one season, we alreadygot that out of this guy, of
enough to show you that this isgoing to be the guy. And I
understand, you know, we madethe jokes about amber Rose, all of
those different things. I have adifferent opinion about that. I'm like,
hey, you want to go havefun. You strike me as a guy
that's gonna know when to ramp itup on that side. But then when
the turn it down and really rampit up, on the other side,
(01:18:08):
because, as I've said, we'regoing to get the reports hearing about a
month or two. Hey, CJis out in California. He's got Dalton
Schultz out there, he's got NicoCollins, he's got all of these guys.
He did it as a rookie. They're probably out there now. They
probably are. But I mean himjust being a guy that's not going to
necessarily be a Hey, we're puttingin the work today, you know,
if we've got to get those reports, because I always know how people will
(01:18:29):
get on the weekend warriors of youknow, does anybody know you worked out?
If you don't let them know thatyou worked out. Whereas I think
a guy like where a guy likeCJ. He doesn't have to do the
mere selfies, he doesn't have todo the you know, the the Hey,
I've got the squat rack in frontof me. He's just gonna say,
I've got the squad rack in frontof me, and it's for one
It's for one reason only for sure, So you know, we will we'll
(01:18:51):
see how it all unfolds. We'llobviously see what the Texans wind up doing
to supplement CJ. Stroud is ita Sakwal Barkley or is Saquon Barkley gonna
wind up staying in his own divisionwith the Giant or with the Eagles,
which is something else we talked aboutin the first hour. Well it's also
too. I mean, the Eaglesare in a much different position than the
(01:19:11):
Texans are because you potentially have adead coach walking scenario there. And I'm
almost wondering when the Cowboys start toshoehorn their way into this, because I
mean, you've got the whole thing. Jerry Jones. We've played the cuts
of not only him, but alsoMike McCarthy giving you the wonderfully rousing You
know, this is why I'm singingfor my supper, So buy into us.
(01:19:33):
I'm not really much of a salesguy. Well, Cowboys Football twenty
twenty four really be excited about it, which they will. I talked with
a buddy of mine's a huge Cowboyfan the other day and I said,
Dude, it's the same cycle. You have the absolute gut punch of a
loss in the playoffs, and thenyou get enough time to get over it,
where then finally you get towards Julyand you're like, oh man,
(01:19:54):
Yeah, here we go. Wegot Michael Parsons, we got Ceedee Lamb,
we got Dak oh Man. We'refeeling really good again. They've got
you hook line and sinker, andit's not going to change anytime soon.
While that guy who tells everybody thatthey're all in is still in charge.
Yeah. No, it's it's wildhow things unfold sometimes. But again,
(01:20:15):
going back to the Texans, you'renot the Giants. You're not even the
Eagles, although they have their franchisequarterback, and the Cowboys since you brought
them up, you're not even thembecause I think the Cowboys, while it
looks on the surface like they're notin a terrible spot, if you're not.
If the guy you have, whetherit's his fault or not, and
(01:20:36):
you can debate till the cows comehome about how much of it who is
responsible for If he's not the guythat's leading you there, one could argue
he's not the guy and you're aboutto pony up to that guy. I
lived this life for a really longtime, the last few years with a
guy that wore number two in Atlanta, Matt Ryan, because he had the
crowd that Matt Ryan sucks, thatcrowd was never going to be on his
(01:20:59):
side, but the numbers in theproduction and everything else that he gave you
showed no, he's actually really good. And people wanted to say, now,
come on, man, it's Julio, it's Tony, it's Roddy White,
it's all these other guys. It'snot him. Dak kind of lives
that life. And the reason whyI make the comparison there is because Matt
Ryan never addressed it, like itwould be brought up to him and he
just would completely shew it aside, same deal with Dak. Dak's not the
(01:21:21):
reason, but that's for the bettermentof his team. But it's also too
in the locker room specifically, andthat is and that's why, you know,
quarterbacks, it's one of those justbe boring, don't take away from
the team, do all those differenttypes of things. And that's the life
that he leads. And look,it works for him, but it's also
too when people are so ready topounce on the opportunity of you losing like
(01:21:44):
you did last year to the Packers. Like, let me ask it this
way, was it Dak's fault thatthey lost to the Packers last year?
Or was it the fact that thesecondary for the Cowboys looked like they had
never practiced together before, which wasastonishing seeing how they played all season long
and you saw some of the defensebreakdowns, I was just like, how
is this happening? It was causeand effect because you cannot you cannot throw
(01:22:06):
a pick in the playoffs the wayhe did. But it's not his soul
crushing if you're not already down twentyone nothing in the blink of an eye
because your defense is getting rolled. So it was definitely an equal opportunity blame
game there. But because he's DakPrescott and makes what he does now,
and because he's Dak Prescott and he'sabout to make what he's about to make,
(01:22:30):
because again they're in that spot, you cannot let him walk because whatever
is his replacement is not going tobe better. And if you sign him,
then you're locked into a guy formultiple years who you're not sure and
you might not even be fifty tofifty if he's ever going to lead you
to the Promised Land, which isnot the first time you said that in
(01:22:50):
Cowboys Land. And to get itback to the Texans for this, I
feel like you know at least, the you know, overview look at the
Texans this offseason is there are nowrong moves. I mean, I think
that there are most moves next weekwhen free agency and trades can happen,
all of those different things that wesee being announced of this guy's coming to
the Texans, I think most peopleare going to have the response of Okay,
(01:23:11):
yeah, you know, if it'sa little bit of a need,
but it's also too as well.I think that kind of parsing what Nick
Cassio said last week at the combine. They don't want to be the headline
winners in the offseason. They wantto be the headline winners during the season.
And who are the headline winners usuallyduring the offseason, Well, you
know, losing organizations that just think, hey, if I bring in Chris
Jones, if I bring in MikeEvans, I bring in Saquon Barkley,
(01:23:32):
then all of a sudden, we'rea Super Bowl contender. Well what else
do you have around them? AndI think that the Texans kind of look
at it, and I understand ifthere's going to be people that are disappointed
of saying, come on, dude, you got all this cap space,
You've got a quarterback on a rookiedeal for the next couple of years.
This is when you go all in. This is when you do it.
It's at no, absolutely the timingis. Timing is of the essence in
(01:23:54):
a lot of different ways in theNFL. And that's that's another example.
All Right, we're gonna take aquick time out here. We still have
a nickelback tickets to give away thishour as well. Dan Matthews, Adam
Clanton with you on a Friday editionof the A Team Sports Talk seven ninety
Adam Clinton and Adam Wexler. TheA Team Now continues. I have it
(01:24:15):
on good authority that Adam Wexler isgoing to be joining us for the next
segment. Maybe we shall see DanMatthews over there ac right here on a
Friday edition of the program Sports Taxseven ninety. What do I need to
do with his setup right here too, because like Danielle like kind of like
sit over here in the corner.Yeah, he he angles all of the
monitors that face him to the exactopposite of my vision because he's hiding stuff
(01:24:41):
back there, right. He's gotcameras, he's got monitors, he's got
multiple laptops. He wears an IFB. I mean, he's just did I
send you guys that TikTok the otherday? Of the guy that goes to
the door and hello, have Itold you about our Lord and Savior?
And he pulls out a coffee cup. Microsoft that Oh my gosh, do
you remember all the updates? Oh? I mean still get them all the
(01:25:04):
time here on the computer as is. I tell you what, I'm not
trying to tell people how to livetheir lives. But the best decision I
ever made, I loved your lifedoesn't crash. I don't get a ton
of everything's connected. I'm just sayingit's not. Look, it's not the
(01:25:24):
most user friendly. It's not.I I got so used to it that
get used to it, but youhave to get used to it. When
I had to start using a PCagain, I was like, wait a
minute, that's not supposed to bethere, Like where's the top button?
You know, all those different things. I need a new one. It's
way overdue. It's a great investment. I will give you that. No
free shoutouts, of course, butit's a great investment. Not even a
little bit. Okay, I'm gonnagive Nathaniel low a shout out because as
(01:25:49):
we get closer to the end ofspring training, not going to gloat,
not going to just any of that, but I am gonna say that when
we tell everybody that, well, when we meaning like people like Dan and
I because I think I think Wexthinks that the Rangers are going to be
good for a while because of theirsystem, which is a perfectly logical way
(01:26:12):
of looking at it. But Idon't know if he's as willing to admit
that last year they played out oftheir minds and it was a big part
of it as maybe some people.I think he's trying to give credit where
it's due, which is admirable,but I just can't. I maybe it's
like how I was with UH,with Nico Collins or John's I got to
(01:26:33):
see it a second consecutive year beforeI believe it. Well, I mean
even Ranger fans were like that withthe bullpen. I mean I had a
good buddy of mine that all throughoutthe ALCS I was talking with and I
was like, man, your bullpenis pitching unreal. He immediately texted me
back, stop talking, like Idon't want to jinx it. I kept
waiting for them to show it.I mean, now the Astros could take
advantage in one home game. Imean Spores, I mean La Cleric,
(01:26:55):
all of those different types of guysthat when they got knocked around, they
did al tuove hello right exactly. He has risen to the moment again.
Another great Joe Davis called during thepostseason for the Astros. Love that guy,
but I mean, you know thatwas just the thing is that they
pitched out of their mind in thebullpen, that they had not done that
all season long. I mean,I remember my good buddy RJ. Choppy
(01:27:16):
who does mornings there in DFW.I had him on the preview of the
series and I said, what's thebiggest concern and he said, of course,
it's the bullpen. He was like, I mean, these guys have
pitched well in the wild Card andthe Alds, but I mean we're kind
of waiting for that other shoot todrop. So to your point, I
mean, you had hot hitters,he had starting pitchers who are unreal.
(01:27:36):
In Montgomery, Evaldi pitched well. They kind of ran into a little bit.
Yeah, I know how you feelabout natives, bum, but I
mean a lot of things went theirway but we've seen it twice here now
as well that the Astros. Youlook at it and you say, things
got to go your way seventeen.I'll never forget the anticipation for Game six
(01:27:58):
of Verlander and you're like, it'syou know, that was a let down,
man, if it's if it's gonnabe our chance, this is our
chance, and you're just looking atthe hitters. You're like, come on,
damn it, guys, like comethrough like you like what you bumps
everything that's happened since then to thisday, March eighth of twenty twenty four,
and I tell you that the Astrosare in Los Angeles and they blow
(01:28:20):
it on a night where Verlander gotthe start, but you get you have
one more chance. It's game seven, but you've got Lance mccullors going.
You had McCullers who helped themself withthe bat in that game, just would
not be confident today like you wouldmaybe would have. I remember that night
taking video of him because we weresitting along the first baseline, just shy
(01:28:42):
of where you get to the foulpole. So we're we're on the first
baseline side. Whole group of usthat that Mattress mac had brought and it
was electric until it wasn't. Neverever have I had my wife squeeze my
hand as hard as she did onthe way out of that stadium because Dodger
(01:29:02):
fan we're wearing like I had abright orange Verlander jersey on. Yeah,
Dodgers fans are getting as close tomy face as this microphone is screaming in
my face. And she knows mem M. And she goes, if
you don't get to that bus assoon as possible, we're gonna have because
(01:29:24):
she knows what I wanted to do, even though it's just a baseball game.
But I was like, these areDodgers fans. These are the worst
of the worst scum of the earth. This is California trash over here.
It's you know what I like tocall West Coast tough guy. They love
to be tough. It's also though, too. Bill Murray taught us a
lesson in the Life Aquatic with SteveZissu. The people who fight don't talk.
(01:29:45):
The people who fight just punch.I'll tell you what, man,
it's Dodger Stadium. There's a lotof history. There's a lot of this.
There's a lot of that I don'tcare if it's a hot take as
the most overrated stadium I ever beento my life, from the from the
riff raft to get in and outof it, which is everywhere in LA.
But look, that's part of it. I'm sorry, right right,
(01:30:08):
I don't. I don't want tosit for an hour, but one way
to get to this supposed great experience. Of course, you're outdoors in Los
Angeles, the weather's gonna be great. What else you got? It's not,
It's just not. I was like, Matt Thomas loves he loves their
jerseys. I think Matt Thomas isactually a diehard Dodgers fan. He just
doesn't want to admit it. Andyeah, they're they're classic, the colors,
(01:30:31):
all that. It just didn't.I was like I was expecting,
like maybe it was. It wasbecause it was a world series featuring them
against my team. I don't know, No, I mean a lot of
that plays into it. And youknow, I haven't had a chance to
do much of the road trips.I mean I got to do the one
Arlington last year. That was fun. It was a pretty fun atmosphere,
all those different things, and well, it died, especially when you had
(01:30:56):
as Sparky called it the from Downtownthree pointer. Yeah, the three run
homer from Jose Like when he hitthat home run. At that point,
I thought this series has flipped, like if that guy just ran into one
like that this series and it wasone of those. I looked at the
Rangers dugout and it almost kind offelt like I was like, is that
the Astros redemption for Jorge Solaer rightthere? Like is that is it that
(01:31:20):
type of home run? I mean, I look back and I still can't
believe they lost that series, andit didn't even it doesn't even have anything
to do with the fact that Josedid that. You know why, as
stupid and as crazy as this sounds, I expected him to. He did
it, and it was awesome andwe were all like freaking out. But
then it was like, yeah, that's his latest, and now they're gonna
(01:31:45):
come home. They're gonna win oneof these games, probably Game six,
and they're going to smash. Atthat point, I think it was still
in doubt. I don't think theDiamondbacks had finished off the Phillies. Now
they had, and I think theydid it a day after. If you
tell me that they win one ofthose two games in the diamond Backs are
sitting there waiting on them. Ourimaging is the home of the back to
back world champion Houston Astro. Imean, it's just it. That's almost
(01:32:08):
it's almost twenty nineteen depressing. No, I mean twenty nineteen was an alzheimer
because I still also to maintain andpeople can say it has nothing to do
with it. I don't care. You're not gonna get me off this point.
If Brandon Toobman shut, if heshuts his mouth in the clubhouse,
Astros win that World Series. Whydo you think that? Because it was
(01:32:29):
it was a distraction. It waseverything that took away with distraction, you're
leading going into the seventh inning ofGame seven at home. I understand what
the hitters didn't do, because thatwas that series. It was at home
trying to get that clutch hit. They couldn't get it up. In DC
they got it. But I justthink that straneous things that they did not
(01:32:50):
need to have at the forefront oftheir mind. AJ Hinch is getting questions
about it. Bregman's getting questions aboutit, Garrett Cole Verlander, all of
these guys getting questions about you know, hey, he is your organization this?
Hey is your organization that? Andof course you know the Nats became
the media darling all that kind ofstuff. I understand that you know,
some things can be overcome, Butis it just a foregone conclusion though everybody
(01:33:13):
thinks that it is. Is itjust a foregone conclusion that Garrett Cole comes
in there and just cleans up?I that's what I thought. I thought,
if nothing else, well, thatmakes it. That makes you easier
for you to argue your point. There you go. I think, if
nothing else, if AJ had puthim in and you still have Howie Kendrick
at the home run, you're kindof like, what do you want from
me? Your cat? I putour best guy out there, and you
(01:33:35):
could you as AJ could have madethe argument you did put your best guy
out there in that situation because youweren't bringing in Garrett Cole the entire season.
I realize it's Game seven, Iget it. I get the situation.
Will Harris hadn't been hit. WillHarris was untouchable, and then the
one time he does, it's thatgarbage off the foul pole where he where
(01:33:57):
he threw that pitch. Go backand rewatch it they were just meant to
win that game in some respects. And you're talking about the similarities between this
year as well, where the AstrosGame six, they get out early,
the broken bat single by Jordan Yep. But it was the other opportunities that
they would have as it was somuch on the table, And that was
the thing is it is soon asthey were unable to cash in on those
(01:34:18):
opportunities, you were kind of like, damn it, man, it wasn't
just the home team lost every gamein that series. That was hardly the
only similarity. Weren't cashing in rI mean it was even Game seven of
them falling behind the way they didin the first inning, and then they
put together a little bit of acharge in the bottom half and you're just
kind of like, just keep theline moving, run in the one,
(01:34:40):
like find a way to be ableto make a huge inning at this point
and do something. As the memesays, no, one hundred percent.
And I mean that was the thingyou know the World Series year part two
is that they kind of got itgoing and the opposite of what I talked
just talked about with the Brandon Toddmanstuff. Michael Branley Yeah, Michael Brandley's
saying what he did won them thatWorld Series. Yeah, because I think
(01:35:02):
that there was a little bit ofdamn, you know. I mean,
twenty seventeen was one thing, butmaybe maybe we can't get over at this
point. And it was him kindof you know, giving the lou Brown
or a heart attack thing speech inthe clubhouse, and guys were like,
yeah, I'll always think during thisrun they should have had a minimum of
three and probably four. They shouldhave won last year. And that's saying
(01:35:25):
something because last year. I'm notgonna say it was the worst because I
think I think Atlanta was the worst. But by the time they got there,
you didn't have Verlander, Right, mcclors was your ace, Jose was
hurt, and mccaullors wasn't even pitching. You fielded the worst, even more
than eighteen, where you ran intoa cheating buzz saw and Joe West.
(01:35:48):
You just fielded the least healthy versionof this monster. Right. Nineteen hurts
because it was the best team. You'll never be able to convince me otherwise
because I watched every regular season gamein just about the postseason. They destroyed
major League Baseball that year with theexception of Garrett Cole in the first month
of the year, it was likeit was a boat race man twenty one,
(01:36:11):
And I remember I even asked youthis when it was pretty much a
foregone conclusion They're gonna lose. Iwas in a bad mood every one of
those home games. But it wasalso though too. It was where I
was like, does this kind ofstart to become like a can they do
this? Like like can can theyfind it? Because even Astros fans and
and you know me included of Iwanted another one because I wanted to have
(01:36:31):
that feeling in it was No,I wanted to have that feeling again.
Like I will never forget how Ifelt. Remember when when Clemson beat Alabama
and Dabbo hit the hit the floor. Yeah, my legs legit. When
the when the ball was hit toAltuve and he was he gobbles it up
throwing it over to first. Mylegs gave out like I filled out here
(01:36:53):
because no, because I was justlike the first It's it's just that there's
nothing like it, and it's thebeauty of Like I always think, like
when your team wins a championship, you think about the years that sucked,
and you're just kind of like manlike, you know, being at a
not even half empty astronome that whenit like that, you're just like,
you know, are we ever goingto be that team? That's why I
(01:37:14):
become that team, and you're justkind of like, wow, Like I
put in all that time for thisnow, That's why I said that.
The second one, I kind ofI resent it because I wanted the valid
I wanted the validation almost too muchto enjoy it. That's why I want
number three. We'll see, allright when we come back, We're gonna
give away Nickelback tickets to the RodeoFinal Day this week that we've done it,
can you will you join Adrian,Matthew Rubin, and Alex in winning
(01:37:40):
a pair of tickets to see Nickelbackcoming up on March thirteenth. We'll find
out when we come back if youcan buy Rockets Gearonics. You can hear
us on its listen live for freeon any smart device. Ryan Stanik's a
Mariner. That's about the most Iwanted to grab what His wife, Jessica
(01:38:02):
sent out a long video and shebegan her social media post with I've had
this in the drafts for a whilethey knew this is kind of what why.
There's more to it than what weusually talk about. I'll cut this
guy and get rid of him andgo do this, go sign this guy,
and y'all what he makes millions golive. So there's other parts of
what baseball life is. And yes, they make millions and millions of dollars.
(01:38:25):
And he will sign with the Marinersfor many many Greenbacks and got many
of them from Houston and many ofthem from Tampa before that. But all
your whole life is gits you gosomewhere else. You just made all these
friends here. Both of your kidswere born here. You want a championship
here. Your best baseball was here. And when we were talking about the
Boris four now two, for somany weeks, I kept trying to bring
(01:38:46):
up it isn't even just the Borisguys Pitchers as capable as Ryan Stanneck.
If Ryan Staneck pitched as well ashe did here in Houston but did it
for another team, he would havebeen signed because he would have been doing
that in the eighth or ninth inninghere he was doing it in the sixth
inning or the fifth inning, orthrowing one pitch in the postseason in a
(01:39:08):
huge game in Arlington against the Rangersin trouble and getting a double playball out
of it. But he was justa guy here because they had so many
of them. And I don't meanit to demean him at all. I
just mean I just don't think peoplewere paying attention to how effective he was.
He was unreal in twenty twenty two, and it was still more than
capable last year. He's got adeal now, and yes you said he's
going to the Mariners. J D. Martinez still looking for a home.
(01:39:30):
We just saw Chapman, one ofthe Boris guys. We just saw kek
Hernandez get a deal in the lastweek. There are still players. And
look how far into spring training weare. February fourteenth was when pitchers and
catchers reported for most teams, notthe Dodgers and Padres who are already there.
And that's the day we began givingyou our JV updates for the following
day. That was two weeks ago, and last month and a week into
(01:39:55):
this month. These guys aren't goingto mean hitters. They'll probably be ready.
You think Blake Smell or Blake Snellor Jordan Montgomery are going to be
pitching Opening Day Opening week, theymight, and then you might be worried
about when they're not going to beable to pitch because they weren't ramped up
properly. And I don't know ifyou guys mentioned what your best friend in
Major League Baseball said the GM ofthe Texas Rangers yesterday, saying, I
(01:40:18):
don't want to close the door completely, but yeah, we're not interested in
bringing Jordan Montgomery back at this point. So it's just another team. If
you didn't know already, it doesn'tappear to be on the radar for a
Montgomery, so he and Snell thethat just means we want too much money,
right, probably, or God forbid, the Rangers run out of money
(01:40:39):
because their TV deal isn't what itused to be. Is that a thing
up there, that's what they continueto claim their bally's right or they wor
yes, correct, they will befor one more year, but then the
amount of money they're getting is way, way, way, way less.
Yeah, but then what happens. Is it going to be like what's happened
with the Astros and Rockets. Probablynot. It will probably be more like
(01:40:59):
what's happening with the Padres and acouple others. Major League Baseball wants to
take them over and possibly screw upMajor They want to help. They want
to create a little bit different networkin a way that the I mean,
it doesn't really matter who buys it. It was just very easy to do
here because of the teams that wereinvolved, the two teams that were involved
with the then AT and T Sportsand at A now Space City Home network,
(01:41:20):
that they were able to do that. And obviously they're in charge of
running it and it will be alittle bit different there. But they spent
so much money the last couple ofoff seasons and got suers are under contract
again. His money is like nothingcompared to what Seeger's making, Simeon's making,
and de gram is making. Butapparently that's enough. Enough is enough.
At some point, Yankees usually reacha stopping point. Most of the
(01:41:42):
non major market teams reach a stoppingpoint. Also, we talk about talk
about Jim Crane's stopping I mean,if he didn't have a stopping point,
if he didn't have a ceiling,if the CBT was just three letters of
the alphabet to him rather than acollective bargaining tax. Then we wouldn't be
having these conversations every single year.Jeremy Paanea would be riding the bench behind
Cars Korea and Jake Myers will bethree players behind the three players in front
(01:42:02):
of him, behind George Springer.Good. I mean, it's just not
like that for anybody. Everybody hastheir their bottom line of where the spending
ends. It's just a little bitdifferent for every team. By the way,
congrats to Cesario in Alvin, whoknows the gym of the Texans.
According to Tom Brady, Yes,that's right. How he butchered Nick Cassario's
name many many times while he workedwith him for almost twenty years as hilarious
(01:42:27):
Casio in Alvin. No just kidding, Cesario in Alvin knew that. Before
Nickelback changed its name to Nickelback andthey were a cover band, they were
actually referred to as Village Idiot.Come out to our watering hole tonight.
We've got great cover band, VillageIdiot. Well's two dollars. I look,
(01:42:48):
that just rolls off the tongue foryou. It's like an actual actual
ad. All Right, We're goingto take a quick time out because I've
actually saved some things from when yougot through the door, and one of
them is probably what matters the leaston the list of things to talk about,
but is also the most interesting tome, and I think some people
(01:43:08):
will agree with me. It hasto do with the Texans. We'll tell
you about that when we come backnext here on the eighteen. Hey,
it's Blommer. The eighteen continues withAdam Clinton and Adam Wexler. There's more
asses on this show than a certainmix a lot video. I'm like,
your mother would not be proud.Right now, baby's got those hot takes.
(01:43:30):
We are almost to our football atfive segment, but that doesn't mean
it's too soon to talk about thenew threads now. As I was driving
into the show today, I gota text message from wex and it was
basically like one of those rumor tweets, and I don't have it in front
(01:43:51):
of me. To be honest, this is completely unconfirmed. But I have
exactly the information you need about theupcoming uniforms for the Houston Texas, but
it's unconfirmed. You know what I'mtrying to do. I'm trying not to
get too amped up about it becauseI think I'm gonna ultimately be disappointed,
not from the fact that they'll lookbad, but just from the fact that
they won't be that starkly different fromwhat we've seen. Uh, it's important
(01:44:14):
what CJ. Stroud is wearing whenhe wins the Texans a super Bowl,
is it not? Yes? ButI can't even fathom any team in the
history of professional sports where he said, Man, that's awesome, except I
don't like their uniforms. Okay. Now, see here's where you're wrong.
Okay, If John Stockton doesn't hitthat shot and the Rockets go on to
(01:44:39):
play the second three peat incarnation ofthe Bulls, or they disrupt that incarnation,
they disrupt that threepeat and they winthat title, and that's what they're
holding the trophy wearing for the nextforever, you'd have been mad. Yes,
really, you know why? No, Because you don't change your uniforms
(01:44:59):
the exact year after you win backto back championships, Okay, And if
you do, you don't do itto that. So you put all the
work in to change them, whichis years in the making. It's not
overnight. You got focus groups anddesigns and league approvals and hurdles and everything
that you got to yea. So, in other words, they didn't know
they're going to win any titles whenthey started the process. They only knew
(01:45:21):
they had a title, and thenthey got another title. Oh hang on,
you're telling me, and you probablyhave a better idea than I do
that Les Alexander bought the team innineteen ninety three and immediately said, we
got to get rid of these they'veworn them forever. Well, let's take
it to what's actually happening with theTexans when the problem. We know this
for a fact because we've talked toCallan Hanno about this before, and we've
(01:45:43):
talked to the marketing people there. They've gotten in front of us multiple times,
all before they had any idea thatthey were going to get it right,
all while they were being led byLovey and Davis or Dave and Davis.
This is when all this were began. Well, now they're actually very
good. Now they're reigning division champions. They're gonna head it into next season
(01:46:06):
and CJ. Stroud is going tobe known for his career with the Texans
in another uniform for the next five, ten, fifteen, Every year of
the rest of his career hopefully otherthan year one. Okay, this would
be like if Yao Ming and TracyMcGrady and roun Our test had all been
healthy at number ninety six our testsand they finally broke through. Because I
(01:46:29):
think a lot of people thought thatteam if they if they didn't win the
championship, they had a very goodshot at getting to the finals that year.
Let's put it that way. Theywould have played the Celtics. So
there's no guarantees. It's not likeeighteen where you knew they would blow the
doors off the caves. The Rocketswere gonna go to the finals and play
the Celtics. That never happens exceptfor the other two times that it happened
in the eighties. But no,they would have gone and won that championship,
(01:46:54):
and then you would have been ableto say, oh, I've got
a yaoming rookie jersey. The onlyyear he wore the pen stripes those rookie
year. The jerseys they currently wear, all the iterations blue on white,
white on red, red on red, all these things and what they have
and their helmet in the fact thatthey're despite they have very very demonstrative adjectives
in front of the colors. It'sa red, white and blue team.
(01:47:15):
It's going to remain a red whiteand blue team, per the team.
They've never said otherwise. They've neversaid, you know, we're changing the
colors. They may add some colors, and I think that's what we're going
to find out as they unveil theuniforms and the color that's long been discussed,
that's been made people mad and otherarenas for the college football team that
trotted out the Houston blue, notthe Oilers blue. Houston blue. That's
(01:47:38):
the same thing the Texans are goingto do. It will not become I
don't suspect their primary color, andnobody believes that it will in need.
The rumored unconfirmed reports say the verysame, but it will be featured on
at least one, if not acouple, of their new jerseys. They
got seventeen games to play, plusthe two preseason games that are one per
(01:47:58):
year. That's hard to say eachyear that nobody really cares about. They
did care what they look like onSundays, as evidenced by the fact that
people did throw a hissy fit whenthey had to play the Titans and the
Titans looked like the Oilers and theylooked so awesome. I was watching a
highlight today of Will Levis throwing theball to Stephen Nelson. I loved it.
It was great. He made aterrible decision, but yeah, there
is Stephen Nelson doesn't play for theTitans, or he didn't that game.
(01:48:19):
He doesn't play for either team currently, well for another couple of days before
his contract technically expires, and hecould head into next season as a free
agent, which he will. Itlooks like because there was a report about
another player heard right here on SportsTalk seven ninety earlier today when Jonathan Alexander,
the beat writer for The Chronicle onthe Texans, joined Chris and Stan
(01:48:40):
on Next up, they signed DaltonSchultz, and they made that official today
with the announcement they signed Kyami Fairbairn. And the possibility still exists that another
Texans player, Blake Cashman, perJonathan Alexander, is someone they are working
to prevent becoming a free agent bysigning him in advance of the free agency.
(01:49:00):
That is a good thing, andit's it's not a small thing either,
But it's not the big splash slashkeeping our guy news we're thinking of.
But to get back to your point, and this is where you were
headed. I'm sure the entire time. The most important thing. Yeah,
who let's I'll give you four.If they're going to be four jerseys,
(01:49:23):
then that means there are going tobe four models. Who are the four
people modeling the new uniforms when theyunveil them, either digitally or literally in
person? CJ? Okay, CJwill go CJ for one? All right?
I like that? Right? Okay? Who else? Will Anderson?
Okay? We like Will Anderson atCJ. It sounds like it makes this
offensive leader, defensive leader, cornerstoneplayers. I love it. Good choices.
(01:49:46):
Who's three? Who's four? Asmuch as we'd like to put him
in one because he still looks likehe could play. It won't be Demico,
Yeah, Demiico never wears the uniform, so I wouldn't have him modeling
it, same as I wouldn't haveactual models modeling the Unifor I'm gonna go
with Dalton Schultz, Wow, yep, yep. And the last one is
going to be Saquon Barkley. Iwill give you that. The timing would
(01:50:12):
work out. The Texans will beactive in free agency, and I do
have a question for our listeners onthat very topic which will relate to this
topic. Well, free agency opensa month before they're going to unveil him
at least, and in that veinthey're gonna have somebody, somebody of significance
is going to be a Texan, whether it's John Bernard coming back, Saquon
Barkley coming in, DeAndre Swift comingin, Justin Simmons coming in, Christian
(01:50:32):
Wilkins, Daniel Hunter, somebody willhave signed a deal. In my opinion,
and again that's the very question Iput to everybody else when we continue
at football at five, I thinkit would make a lot of sense to
have that player do so because intheir case, it will actually be the
first time people see him in theirTexans uniform. It's not like college recruiting
where the moment for the oldies outthere, the moment the facts comes in.
(01:50:56):
You see the player modeling the uniformbecause when he went on his official
visit, he put the uniform onand he's wearing the gloves and say you
have h on him and all thatstuff. It doesn't happen in the NFL
when players like Russell Wilson. Doyou think the equipment manager had a Russell
Wilson three jersey just sitting in amade up locker for him, and not
only was it there, he actuallyput it on with pads, with his
(01:51:17):
helmet, with his pants, withhis EyeBlack. I don't think so.
He's not a college kid or ahigh school kid looking to be a college
kid. But yeah, I'll givethat to you. A Saquon Barkley and
Dalton Schultz. I'm gonna say yesthough on two of them. You have
the right idea on Barkley, butit will be somebody else. And that's
why I asked the question, whoreally is the fourth guy? Because I'm
(01:51:39):
feeling somebody else? Are they alreadyon the roster. They're already on the
roster? Okay? Uh? Superpopular? Oh Tank Dell, Yeah,
Tank Del feeling Tank Nico or Stingbefore Dalton. But CJ's one of the
guys, right has to be.He's your quarterback. My god, he
could be terrible and he would beone of the guys. He has to
(01:52:00):
be there. Though, where doyou think he's going to be a usc
basketball game? Maybe? Wait hewas? Or keep going. He's made
a lot of appearances a basketball courttoday what's he doing playing basketball? I
don't remember. I saw him onsocial media and I immediately thought I should
see an argument with about this. Was he Why is he on the floor
where he could rip up? Washe with one of the renowned NBA trainers
like at the with Chris Brinkley.Maybe could be well, grows a little
(01:52:25):
older generation. Yeah, but I'dstill say I'd go with him. That's
what he transformed him to from basketballball and back again. Some would say
the only transformation Jordan got from whathe was to what he became was by
Dean Smith. Now that he'll actuallygive me the ball. No, some
people remember he held him back andnobody realized how good he was going to
(01:52:45):
be. Remember initially from Matt Damon, he didn't want to hire Phil Jackson
because Phil was going to take theball out of his hands and Doug Collins
had put the ball in his hand. Isn't he one of the points of
the triangle. I mean, howmany guys do you have? A text
winner was a triangle. Phil wasjust a guy that passed around piece pipes
and books and managed egos and gaveDennis Robin vacations. People in the locker
room and then Lakerland maybe when hewas GM or the Knicks wherever Chicago obviously
(01:53:12):
were. They had to be lookingaround the room at each other when he
was talking to them, like thisguy, for real, What's who is
this guy? Dennis? I knowhe win a lot of games. Didnis
come back on time from his vacation. Nope, they can't get him out
of bed. We don't care.Is he gonna be there for the game.
So there was a knock at thedoor and it's Michael Jordan and I
just hit him too the blankets becauseI didn't want him to see me like
that. It was great. Justshow up forget the game ten minutes before
(01:53:35):
tip off, go go play basketball, leave without showering, and go to
the club on your motorcycle. Yeah, well that's why he didn't shower.
He knew that he would air dry. All right, five o'clock hours,
air dry, Jerry tal No,thanks, I air dry. It's one
of the greatest underrated lines from Jerrymaguire by Rod Tedwell. All Right,
(01:53:56):
five o'clock hour, Football at fivecoming up next here on the Talk about
being Elite. Love talking to youabout classic elite Chevy Sugarland Classic Elite Chevy
Highway six. As a matter offact, Classic Elite Buick GMC, same
thing, all under that elite umbrella, and all with you having the opportunity
to work with the great owners overthere. I'll find yourself that brand new
(01:54:16):
vehicle of your dreams. Boy,will you be happy about a lot of
people here inside the iHeart Radio familycan talk about that very same thing.
I am among them, AC isamong them. And right now, if
you're looking over at Classic Elite BuickGMC, how about eleven thousand, eleven
thousand dollars off the Sierra elevation. How about sixty two fifty off twenty twenty
three terrains. How about thirty fivehundred of twenty twenty three Yucons. You
(01:54:42):
know where they're at. You canfind Classic Elite Buick GMC right off the
KD Freeway just west of Highway six. We are professional great. When you
want to go find that brand newvehicle of your dreams, you go find
Classic Elite Buick GMC and you tellthem. Adam Wexler sent you on by
two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adhamtalking your team series. Adam Clinton and
(01:55:08):
Adam Wexler or the A team.A ay, are you right at brushing
football? It's five o'clock some,it's five o'clock football. Professional football in
(01:55:29):
America is a special game plan ofaction for football at five is altered slightly,
with the Baltimore Ravens taking to socialmedia to announce moments ago they have
agreed to terms on a new fouryear contract extension with a highly sought after
defensive player. It's been talked aboutquite a bit these last couple of weeks
here on this program. His nameis not Patrick Queen. I thought he
(01:55:51):
was a collaborator with David Bowie. No, it's Justin matab Buquet, who's
a collaborator with David Bowie. Queen. No, no under pressure Patrick Patrick
Queen not just a queen. Well, I know, but I just not
just any old queen like fred Ie lead singer of the band Yeah Mercury.
(01:56:13):
Frederick Mercury is good band. Didhe have a sibling that you could
have attached instead? Freddie Mercury's sibling? If you can think of this,
Freddy is this is not real?Is it what he has? A Like?
There's no real sibling, is there? I don't know? Okay,
A big not following along? Whois it gonna be? Tell me who?
What am I miss? What amI missing? His sister's name is
(01:56:36):
Jill. I'm kidding, I'm makingthat up. Jill Mercury's brother Freddie.
Yeah, that's what you would say. That is what I would do.
I got you. I'm with you. It only took me about two minutes.
It's five oh three here on theA team. Let's get the football
at five again. Justin Mattabuke, second player in as many days who had
been franchise tagged this cycle to thenreach a long term deal with his team,
(01:56:58):
four year contract a little under onehundred million per reports. You can
rap report among them. That's anotherplayer that that's how you that's the best
way for both sides to have thefranchise tag used. The team used it
to essentially buy time to not allowhim to hit the market. And in
(01:57:19):
the time that you know they hadwith him, which was extended because they
tagged him, they now know thathe'll be there long term. They spent
the money on Matabuque. Maybe thatmeans something different for Patrick Queen. Maybe
it means something different for Jadevian Clowney. Keep in mind, the mastermind of
last year's Ravens defense is gone. He's the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks,
(01:57:41):
Mike McDonald. There's a reasonable possiblepipeline if he wants to go,
say, well, I know whatthis guy can do, and I know
how well he can play in thedefense. I want to run if we
can find our way. Maybe hecan ask his advisor, Pete Carroll if
they have some extra money, andhe can find their way to you know,
bringing those guys in. And Ithink there'll be a strong reason to
believe that could happen. But theseare the types of things that are still
(01:58:03):
going to happen before we get hereon Monday, and the tampering period is
open, before we get here onWednesday, and the deals become official,
those that we know about for twodays but haven't become official, and that
tiny, tiny sliver of door isstill open for a player to agree to
terms with Team A, and thentwo days later, now I ended up.
No, I'd really rather do thisand end up with Team B.
(01:58:25):
But the question I ask, inmy opinion, this is a statement.
The Texans are spending money in freeagency a significant player who will impact the
team in an extremely positive way.Next year is coming in free agent.
One of the biggest names in freeagent will free agency will sign with the
(01:58:45):
Texans. But my question is who, and I'm going to put it out
a pole question here in just asecond, who would you prefer? Multiple
choices? Yes, who do youbelieve what would make the most sense?
A number different ways you could lookat it, so I kind of leave
it open ending who will it be? Christian Wilkins, the defensive tackle of
the Miami Dolphins who appears almost definitivelyas a not going to return there.
(01:59:09):
He's going to test the market andthey kind of made that clear and that's
why he's there. Justin Simmons wasjust released yesterday by the Denver Broncos.
Again he is a Bronco according tothe Broncos, but according to how the
NFL works, he's available to everyteam because they released him. He plays
safety. Danielle Hunter is one ofthe best young disruptors of the backfield on
the defensive line. Has had goodyears and a couple of stops, and
(01:59:31):
he will be available. Or thename that's been mentioned the most this entire
offseason, Saquon Barkley, so it'sareas different areas of the team. In
light of the fact that this signingwas made, I want to add a
fifth player, But in light ofthe fact that Elon Musk's social media network
does not allow for a fifth choicein the poll question, I won't.
Otherwise, maybe I would have probablyadded Patrick Queen to kind of give you
(01:59:55):
a little bit more of an avenueof where do we want this great new
player to be? Edge rusher?Do you want to detackle? Do you
want a running back? Do youwant a safety? Is one way you
could look at that question. Wilkins, Hunter, Simmons, Barkley, Who's
going to be a Texan? Who'sgoing to be what makes you believe the
most in next year's team being betterbecause they signed that player. I still
(02:00:17):
think it's probably Saquon for if foronly because he's going to be the most
visible with what he and you wentfor the splashiest one. And I don't
mean it's the wrong way, buthe's going to be the most noticeable because
the ball is going to be inhis hands on offense, He's going to
be helpful in the past game.I would presume if he's healthy next year,
(02:00:40):
I'd set the over under it probablyten and a half touchdowns. I'd
set the over under at fifteen hundredsixteen hundred and fifty yards something like that,
neighborhood of three hundred touches, evenif they have another running back in
the stable. That is a splashymove. Now, Christian Wilkins might play
seventy percent of the snaps every week, Justin Simmons might play every single snap
of the entire season at safety witha couple of passes defense, maybe four
(02:01:03):
picks, and a couple of sacks. He's not giving up bombs, but
he's also playing the same level he'sbeen at. All these players are perennially
among the best players at their position. Wilkins is arguably the second best defensive
tackle, and we don't know ifhe'll be first, because Chris Jones will
be first if he gets there. We're not there yet to free agency.
(02:01:25):
I mean, it's your preference onwhich safety you like the most. I
put Simmons because I like Simmons.I think most people agree Barkley's the best
player at his position in a veryvery good crop. Maybe you think it's
Saric Henry. I don't know,but it's a reasonable guy at the top
of the list, and obviously Ifeel the same way or close to it
with a guy like Hunter. Idon't think John Grenard's that far behind.
And that's kind of how I wouldpersonally look at it. If you say
(02:01:47):
Barkley, then you're saying he's goingto give you that much more than what
you got last year. He's goingto be that much more explosive. When
you're getting two point three on thefirst half of the game, and ten
carries from from Devin Singletary, wellmaybe now you're getting three point three or
four point three. And again DevinSingletary's numbers, you could argue we're actually
worse than what they were is lasttwo years in Buffalo, but they are
(02:02:10):
almost identical, so even I wouldn'tquibble. There are still I didn't mention
an offensive lineman mm hmm. Andthat's the area that probably makes your offense
better all by itself. If theexact same group of skill players returned next
year, including Singletary, but youhad a much better line, they would
all be better. Yeah. I'dbeen saying that well before the Barkley stuff.
(02:02:32):
And if you're watching what's happening again, because in the last three days
and we haven't gotten a whole lotinto it. Dotson Cleveland and probably one
or two other offensive linemen are goingto re up with their teams before they
even get to free agency, andthey're not even the best players at their
position in the league. But theirteam knows, well, we can't let
(02:02:53):
them walk. We can't start overfrom scratch. These guys are why we
can be good. They recognize theirvalue, recognize their value. And the
Texans' biggest weakness on the offensive linestill remains on the interior. There's hope
that You Scruggs is very good. There's hope that Jarrett Patterson is very good,
and there's hope that Jack Mason cangive them another season at least as
(02:03:14):
good as he had last year. And going back on all three spots right
and then going back to the offensiveline, there's hope that that Titus Howard
will stay healthy and performs, notjust one or the other. Yeah,
it would be nice. Like Isaid, the team had to do what
they did. I didn't like itany year, and I know he didn't
like it either, And it doesn'thelp now, but I understand why if
(02:03:36):
he'd just been a tackle his wholecareer. We wouldn't even think twice about
it. They signed him to bea tackle twice, drafted him to be
a tackle, and then this extensionhe got before last season was to play
tackle, and there he played somewhereelse because too many other guys that can't
perform or weren't healthy, couldn't doit, not even on the right helping
(02:03:56):
the team. He was doing whatwas necessary for the team to be better.
But goodness, if they knew hewas going to be playing on the
interior, you can spend your moneya little bit differently. He should be
back on the outer edges of theoffensive line again next year, and not
the edge that Laramie plays on.So and that one could have easily been
another option for you. I don'tknow that Laramie fancies himself as much of
a uniform model, but he's gota lot of tenure and seniority on the
(02:04:20):
Texans. Nobody wants to see that. Just put it on when it's time
to play the game. Put iton your little costume, and don't let
CJ get sacked. By the way, Kashmira Bulsara is what you were looking
for. That's Freddie Mercury's sister's realname. What's his real name? Is
real name? You're not gonna believethis. You're actually not gonna believe this,
(02:04:42):
and I gotta scroll back to getto it. Farroh Bulsara? Why
would you change that? Are?Ok? I think the h is silent
Bulsara. We'd like to introduce ourlead singer. I hope you can help
us pronounce it. Good choice, strong move. He was born in the
Sultanate of Zanzibar. Yes, Ithink that was a strong move. One
(02:05:04):
last thing on the breaking news thatopened this segment, as it relates to
the Texans. This is a defensivetackle, an elite defensive tackle, Justin
Bodabuke. Ninety eight million dollars, four years guarantees could put will be in
the neighborhood of seventy five and hegets fifty three plus a little bit more
than half right out of the gate. If you answer my poll question,
(02:05:27):
Christian Wilkins, then you're looking atthat amount of money as your starting point.
Maybe he only gets a million moreor two million more, but it's
probably a deal that looks very verysimilar to that. You're going to go
into free agency and spend nearly twentyfive million a season for four years if
the contracts played out for a playerthis year. As you head into year
(02:05:48):
two of CJ. Stroud, yourtwo of Will Anderson, your two of
Dmiko Ryans, yes I would, but it's for you guys to answer.
But you're thinking about the other AFCpowerhouse is that you have to get pass
to get to where you want togo. He'll help you do that because
he will help stop their offenses insome way, shape or form. All
(02:06:08):
right, we will get to incase you missed it, coming up next
here on a Friday edition of theeighteen Sports Talk seven ninety, we now
returned to Adam Clinton and Adam Wexlwerthon Sports Talk. You've not yet had
(02:06:30):
a chance to discuss. Let's dothat. Now, what do we got?
I'm backing my hole over here,so you know I had fun in
there with you guys while I could. All right, So Steph Curry left
last night's Warriors game with an ankleinjury, but reports are out that he
is not expected to miss much time. No exact timetable put on how much
time he could be out. ButI bring this up of this significance of
(02:06:53):
the Rockets are still technically in therunning for one of the final play in
spots. They're six games right nowthe Warriors and the Lakers. Now,
another reason why I bring this upto is ankles are an uncertain thing.
You might think you're good to go, but then you get back out there
and it kind of flares up onyou again. Okay, so the Rockets
are twenty eight and thirty five. That means they have nineteen games remaining.
(02:07:15):
What's the absolute best record they canhave. How many games are remaining?
Nineteen and they've won how many twentyseven? Whatever that is? Excuse me,
they have twenty games remaining. Theyplayed sixty two games, so twelve
to eight. That went from twentyeight. That's twenty quick. I never
said twenty eight. No, I'msaying it seemed like two days ago.
(02:07:36):
To answer the question for everybody.Let's say they go a miraculous thirteen and
seven. So basically, you're tellingme they're gonna go six games over five
hundred. The Warriors, who arefour games over five hundred, are now
going to go six games under fivehundred, and that's how they're going to
catch them. I don't want tobe a wet blanket. But the Rockets
are not going to be a partof this year's playing tournament. I already
(02:07:59):
said that, and like Barkley andothers have said during some of the national
broadcasts over the past six weeks,I want to punch people who ay the
constant focus on the last two ofthe ten teams that are going to part
of the playoffs. If the Lakersdon't have a two game winning streak after
(02:08:20):
the regular season, they're not inthe playoffs. If the Warriors don't have
a two game winning streak after theseason, they're not going to be any
It wasn't the Warriors, no onewould care, but it is, so
they do. And the answer toyou should care is because, well,
if they get in, they canwin. No, they can't. Bingo,
They're gonna get the being or moppedwith their faces. And it's not
(02:08:43):
because Minnesota is unbelievable. It's notbecause okay, it's because they're not right.
It's because they're not. Minisota isnot going to be mopping anything up.
If Karl Anthony Towns isn't there, they found a way to win last
night because Anthony Edwards said the blockof the century this century. Yeah,
it was unbelievable. I was actuallywatching at the time it was in it.
It was more sensational than the AaronGordon followed dunk, oh way more.
(02:09:07):
Everybody was trying. They put AaronGordon's dunk on the front page of
ESPN dot com. So I'm like, all right, I'll take a look
because I hadn't seen it. Good. Yeah, it was fine. It
was just a playing a game andacted like it was Blake Griffin, like
putting somebody in a casket. Yeah, and Edwards basically had all their points
down the stretch, although he didmiss a free throw that led to the
awesome block shot. Uh what elsewe have? All Right, So the
(02:09:31):
Dodgers having to switch things up upthe middle in their defensive alignment, Dave
Roberts saying that Mookie BET's not gonnaplay second, He's not gonna be their
shortstop, and it's permanent, atleast for right now. Gavin Luks go
back and repeat yourself. It's permanent, but for right now, So it's
not permanent exactly. Gavin luck isgonna play second. He's had throwing issues,
(02:09:52):
Yeah, he had. He's oneof they've had a bunch of these
guys. Dustin May and he areprobably the two most recent and prominent that
future stars and we he even sawa little bits and pieces of it before.
Massive injuries have gotten in the way, and that's what's happening with Lux.
He's not quite back they thought hewould be. They're very concerned,
like Dan said, about his abilityto play that position, so much so
(02:10:13):
they're gonna take Mookie Bets and movethem over to shortstop because of it.
I can't wait till Mookie Bets isno longer a part of my life.
Of all of the people in baseballonly and includes Manfred and executives, is
he really that high on your list? Well, here's the problem I have
with Mookie Bets. He was thebest player on a team that chieved Adam
(02:10:35):
plant and I hate people in baseballlist if you guys were follow Yeah,
get on board. Man. It'simpressive, But seriously, like they probably
cheated more than anybody actually realizes, and they get none of the flack for
it, and no one ever talksabout this very obvious point. That's why
their fans don't ever pile on theastros. You ever noticed that they just
(02:10:56):
kind of whistle and keep to themselveswhen the sub comes up because they know
better. Unlike Yankees idiots and especiallyDodgers dorks. Those guys can't keep running
their mouth because they just assume thatthey would have won that World Series.
At least the Dodgers can say theywere in the World Series and didn't keep
looking at curveballs from Lance mccullors tonot get to said World Series. Yankees.
(02:11:20):
Just for those that don't know MookieBets and his lifetime as a major
leaguer at shortstop, in the thirdinning of the first game he plays next
year, he will then have amass more than one hundred innings at shortstop
as a major leaguer in ten years. Wow. He basically doesn't play really
well versed in that position. Hedid play all of those innings last year,
(02:11:45):
the first time he'd ever played shortstopas a major leaguer. He's going
to be there, not permanent, but permanent for now shortstop. What else
do we have? It's temporary, yes, yeah, in that you can
rub off. Ah, there yougo. That's all about the wording semantics,
right all right. So, accordingto Mike Silver of the San Francisco
Chronicle. Bill Belichick actually was offereda coaching job this offseason, wasn't to
(02:12:09):
be a head coach. According tohim, the San Francisco forty nine ers
called up the Hoodie to be theirDC. This was before or after they
thought they could go get Steve Spagnolafrom the Chiefs. This was after he
had been told no by the Falcons. So I don't know necessarily that is
in that timeline. Yeah, SteveWilkes was their DC all the way through
(02:12:31):
the Super Bowl, and even KyleShanahan made it sound like they weren't going
to make any coaching changes and asbecause they were permanent, except like less
than forty eight hours later they madea coaching change with Steve Wilkes not being
brought back. Steve Spagnola's contract didactually expire with the Chiefs after they won
the Super Bowl, and that's whenthe Niners made overtures to him. That
(02:12:52):
would be quite a football family ofcoaches, with the Shanahans running the offense
and the Belichick's running the defense. That would be incredible. The Rats and
the Hoodies. That's that's that wouldhave been something. So is the word
from Silver that he said no.To them. At least the report that
(02:13:13):
I've seen is it doesn't say anythingabout a rejection other than they called.
But it didn't seem like that thetalks really went anywhere, So I did
not call them back. Did theyleave a message with his dog on his
answering machine? With his dog thedog that runs the draft Sometimes there's husky
us, there's just a CLEEQUEI Iremember that that was the name of the
(02:13:33):
dog, an Alaskan cleek Ey thatsometimes you know, it's one of those
you know, hey, you know, if you ever thought about doing what
they actually did. We never talkedabout that. Nick Sorenson is their new
DC, but Brandon Staley is alsoon the new Niners staff, and he'll
probably flourish because that's what people dothere. I'm sure he'll flourish. That
(02:13:54):
he has plenty of talent to workwith. He is a good defense of
mine. I think he even asa very very smart football person. I
think he really understands the game.I think he does a good job of
doing things schematically. But he madefor a really bad first time head coach.
I think he'll get another opportunity. But the amount of mistakes that they
made and just bad coaching decisions overhis time with Justin Herbert and the Chargers.
(02:14:18):
It's amazing for someone who I reallythink knows football to be a good
head coach. Here we talk abouthow polar opposite personnel men or I guess
front officeman John Lynch and John Elwayare. It's like staggering. Remember when
he got hired though, too, people were like, Wow, the forty
nine ers are a dumpster fire becausethey're like this. Nothing turned them around.
(02:14:43):
He himself has. It's pretty incredible. Can we get to my favorite
item of in case you missed ittoday because I know we haven't talked about
it. What else? Yeah? Please you guys follow at Hey k Adams
on Twitter. Yeah, she hoststhe show. She hosts it, she
runs it, she gets guests,She has regular Gronk visits, regular Sham's
(02:15:03):
visits, and they playfully banter backand forth like they're an item. She
got a visit from yeah I knowthat, Uh, from some guy named
at Flizzy mob Sports today. Youwant to know what you had to say?
I would love to tell the class. If k Adams had ass she'd
be one of the great I don'twant to know now, white women of
(02:15:24):
all time. No Kizzy at Hey, k Adams, you're still a batty
dough. Now you want to knowwhat she responded with, So I got
to back it up a little bitlit beep beep as you can. I
know you're not scouring k adams postsand replies. This was brought to your
(02:15:45):
attention because twenty five thousand people haveliked her because she responded correct. Okay,
she quote tweeted that and said great, thanks with THHX. That's it.
She didn't even spell out the wordthanks. That's like I did.
It's so good I probably would doif somebody said that to me same thing.
THHX is the ultimate throwaway rights dadway of saying thank you because you're
(02:16:09):
just too lazy to type it out. It's half as long, no letters,
verse six true. Think he wasgenuine just thanks. It's just kind
of like a the back of yourhand kind of flipped to the person is
even worse. And you had youhad an option with your comment to you
know, say, who tweeted thisat her? You could have either given
his handle or given his Twitter name, and I don't know how you picked,
(02:16:31):
because they're both awesome. You wentwith at Fizzy mob Sports, right,
you could have chosen what he alsogoes by mister Brizo Beans. I
mean again, three point eight millionviews of her response. I have to
go to his page so I canlet everybody know everything about him, any
(02:16:52):
rights. He was suspended at onebillion followers according to him all caps less
than four interesting since he has twohundred and forty one one followers. Actually
yeah, this probably has had toopen up a new account. Yes,
less than two hundred and fifty peopleare interested in what mister Breezobans has to
say, and he isn't even interestedin as many as four hundred other accounts.
(02:17:16):
I thought this was, as Idescribe it each day, some of
the things we've not yet had hada chance to discuss worthy of our discussion.
This fits mister Breezo Beans calling outKay Adams about her backside. Yes,
because then other people would attach picturesof her on the sideline and he
(02:17:37):
would quote tweet those and say thisis the research that people needed. Excellent
work, Bruv. Like if Rdoes something when I see her next that
like she forgot to empty the dishwasher, or I have to go pick something
up, or some one up becauseshe didn't Huh, could I finish our
comments before I walk out the dooror do the dishes or whatever? With
(02:18:01):
the final line that he gave toK would that fit the final line,
I'm gonna need your Oh it's okay. Are you still a battie dough?
Is that what do you want fromme? Is that why you brought this
to our listeners attention? I thoughtso. I didn't even think I was
gonna get that gym for drops purposes. Yes, tremendous o. Man,
(02:18:22):
you should you know you should changeyour handle to at Flizzy Wex Sports.
The first time I came across KayAdams was I'm going there tonight to the
newest iteration of the network Space CityHome Network when it was its original iteration
CSN Houston. I want my CSNHouston. There were, you know,
(02:18:43):
five o'clock was Sports Talk Live whenthey would have their show every day and
that have local panelists myself included, and she would come on as the NBC
Sports Fantasy Football expert. So shewas already national at that point. She
this was like her first, thisis who she is, this is what
kind of where she again with alittle bit of a national person. They
would pipe her in via satellite satelliteswork. Where was she based then,
(02:19:07):
I don't know, probably New York, but that's only a guess. Still
again, I thought her information wasexcellent all right there now, right from
there to Good Morning Football, toher own show with her own name on
it, with great guests, andthey provide us a lot of content.
(02:19:28):
And just imagine if she had evenmore. Apparently, according to this one
person on Twitter, shams likes whatshe's got a lot. All right,
there you go. We're not gonnatop that. Probably here on the A
team. Thanks Pleazi, moob loveit. I gotta tell you about your
one stop shop for all your outdoorequipment needs, all of them right there

Power Sports Tractors and Outdoors. Ifyou can buy Astro's gear on it,
you can hear us on it,tell us live for free on any smart
device. Canfreny Simon's over under thirtythree and a half points tonight. Thank
you. He's literally the only gotafraid of Anfrey oh because he scored thirty
(02:21:18):
three on the Rockets last time.My sister and her son Anthony. I'm
still mad at her name, notnaming him Anthony. No, I did
not watch Mean Girls last night.Yes, you did it, and it
was on cable. Yeah it was. So it's on T and T.
I'm assuming Paramount last night. Ithink. So there's I went to Mountain
School of Rocks directly into Mean Girls. So this was not this is the
(02:21:41):
Paramount channel, not the streaming service, that's correct. So there was commercials
the old Spike TV. Yeah theywere commercial Spike TV. Okay, I
didn't even know that that's what thatwas had become now yeah, because I
mean it's got bar Rescue on it. So that's what made me. Yeah,
bar Rescues on all the time. That is exactly the time that I
turn it off because he yells atpeople. It's just not interesting. He
goes and win. He yells atat him at first, and then he'll
(02:22:01):
build him up of saying I wantto help you save your business. That's
interesting to me. That you don'tlike that show, but you'll watch like
below Deck Well Ramsey, I don'twant I wann't watch him yelling at people
how to cook. So it's theyelling that gets you turned off. I
mean, he's there's a there's anothercooking show where they basically the same do
the same thing. They save yourrestaurant for you because you don't know how
(02:22:22):
to handle your finances, you don'tknow how to run the staff, You've
let it get run down, youknow all the things that like, yeah,
of course you need to be saved. You did everything wrong, Like
you didn't even give yourself a chance. You're doing everything wrong. It's it's
not like the food was bad oryou were in a bad location. You
did all the things that you canactually control, and you did him wrong.
He comes in and say that RobertIrvine does that. He's not quite
(02:22:43):
as mean to them. He's moreof a you know, I gotta be
honest with you. You're you know, hard truths, Yeah, hard truths.
So I'll give that a watch, but not not to not mister barr
Rescue, not Gorda Well. Peoplealso say that Taffer basically ripped what's his
name's restaurant show, Ramsey. Ohokay, well again, how many different
(02:23:03):
things can you do? Now I'mcooking food, I'm competing, I'm saving
a restaurant, or you're the worstchef in America. There's only so many
things you can do, right, like Top Chef and Chopped and like they're
all the same, it's just witha different channel and different hosts. You
know what I would like to like, sit down and do but I never
will. But somebody like you wholikes spreadsheets would actually probably do this if
(02:23:24):
you had the time, which younever will. Does that make it clear
as mud sitting down and just absolutelypouring over everything that is on television right
now, whether it's streaming or otherwise. How much of it is reality television
and how much of it is likeoriginal programming. It's not a remake equalizer,
luckily enough for you and me now, because you made me put an
(02:23:46):
assignment on my plate. Huh.If you go to Netflix, Hulu,
name several others, they're usually brokendown into categories. Yeah, and you
can see how much it can takeyou, how much scrolling you have to
do from the A series start ofreality shows to the Z series. There
are it's never ending, and Ijust it really is a very popular genre.
(02:24:09):
Yeah, and I hate it andit's kind of like movies. Now
that's our Come on, man,Not only did I not hate it,
you like every iteration of individual showsfrom it, like you love vander Pump
Rules, and then you love whateverspinoffs from that. There, I went
through. Love Southern charm, youlove Southern hospitality, you love the fact
that there's how Real Housewives is likenine different cities. Now, I know
(02:24:30):
you watched all five seasons of BasketballWives. Nope, none of that's true.
Did you do any Basketball Wives researchtoday? No, none at all.
I don't think, not even forany of their main characters for the
first two seasons. Probably not.Not anybody that used to be with Orlando
Scandrick. No, not anybody thathas a child with Orlando Scandric and someone
before that, and now likely anotherone. Because what I did was say
(02:24:52):
that we weren't going to talk aboutthe fact that Jalen Green apparently knocked up
some thirty nine year old again,it's all in the delivery at the age
of twenty two. Jalen Green anNBA player who's been with someone for quite
some time, also an adult, just like he is. They're expecting their
first child, so you see howdifferent thing. I didn't call her a
predator like other people, neither oneof us did. I just do.
I do think that's interesting though, that you can call a woman a predator
(02:25:18):
in this situation and seemingly get awaywith it. On International Wedness Day,
Chris Hansen's headed over to her house. Let's have a talk. What's her
Namerian? Michelle? Oh? Isit Dria or Drea? I mean it's
the ending of a longer first name, Andrea. There you go, Drea.
Let's have a talk. She whyhe doesn't need she didn't do what
she knew and you brought things andlemonade? Oh? How old did he
(02:25:41):
say he was? He said hewas an adult? And how old is
he an adult? It's fine? And what's the age difference between the two
of the difference? Does that make? That's what I'm talking about. If
it was a man and it wasa twenty two year old woman, So
the woman would have to be theextremely rich pro sports star, and the
(02:26:03):
man would have to be someone witha product line who's bounced from woman to
woman in the public eye over theyears and has multiple kids with other women,
Like for example, you brought upthe housewise right, did that sound
ridiculous? Who is the uh whois the one on Beverly Hills who had
the really really ancient husband who wasrich and they had a messy divorce recently,
(02:26:24):
Jane? Yeah? Who was whatwas her? What was his name?
Uh? Tom Girardi. Wow.Look at how he rattles that off.
Well, you're also gonna believe whateverhe says. Probably, but it
sounds. I know Erica's right becauseI've seen the show. He could have
said, I think his last namewas uh, Marshall, and I think
her last name was Smith, maybeAnna Anna Nicole Smith. I think I
(02:26:46):
can't remember. Look, she's whatthirty, she's almost forty, and he's
twenty two. The first call hera predator in the right. These people
didn't see that. In the reversethey could it would call Erica a gold
digger. They're always after the woman. It's it's not fair. Well,
the other thing is the assumption, which I believe is incorrect, is that
there's no money on her end. There is, it's probably not what he
(02:27:11):
currently had money, and I don'tmean his age, and he's going to
make more, and there's it's justit's definitely for the next at least five
years. I think there's more comingAnna Nicole Smith. They didn't last five
years because he kicked it. Thatsee to me, there's don't you think
there's a difference between this whole trialand that relationship. I'm not saying her
(02:27:31):
motives. I'm saying the actual Likewhen I say, who cares about this
age difference? I don't really careabout her Anna Cole's age difference, but
it was clear that the end,the end was near and him also from
Houston, they lived here. Iknow, loved her a naked gun thirty
three at three and a third, loved her in the trial when she was
on the stand and Rusty was grillingher and she goes screen you, Rusty,
(02:27:54):
get that audio for us. Thatshould be a drop on the show
because inevitably, somebody we report onfrom an athletics standpoint is going to get
into trouble and they're gonna call onRusty and we're gonna need to have that
and him saying, well, oneof the reasons I was looking at basketball
wives is because I just couldn't placeher with anybody like I knew she was
with Orlando Scandrick, but I didnot believe she was ever married to a
(02:28:18):
basket an NBA player, which shewasn't. But she was on the Basketball
Wives Show because she had been linkedto so many. Do you think the
lifestyle met the show's premise? Doyou think Dan'll have any of this in
the local Rockets launch Pad pregame tonightbefore the Blazers game. I wouldn't think
so. I mean, there wasa really nice article written about Jayalen Green
and Cam Whitmore by Kelly Eco todaythe athletic that might make its way into
(02:28:41):
launch Pad. They had a goodenough game you think they would won it
with some of the numbers that cameout of the Clipper game. They've won
two of their past three. They'reon a one game road winning streak heading
into tonight's game. There's plenty ofgood stuff for launch Pad. They're gunning
for their seventh road victory of theyear to night. Yes. I mean,
if you can't beat the Blazers withnobody but Anferny, then I don't
(02:29:03):
know what to do with you. They don't have no Jeremy Grant tonight to
see out Uh, the last timeI looked, he was doubtful. They
had a couple of players that weredoubtful. Is that super important to me?
He's doubtful? Oh he's p upgraded. Yes, Jermy suck Man as
evidence. They are terrible and AnthonySimon still scored thirty three on the Rockets.
(02:29:30):
I guess somebody had to score thepoints that night, but I feel
like he played with more people thatnight. Jeremy Grant played in that game,
did he not? The game thathe hit the tying shot at the
buzzer and regulation to send it overtime. Just like I said, he played
in that game. Simon's basically hehe is the reason they were where they
were. Rockets actually did a goodjob on him at the end of the
game. They never should have letit gets overtime. He was born the
(02:29:52):
year they're winless against the Blazers thisyear. He was born a month after
I graduated from high school. SoI hate him automatically, nothing personal.
I just you know, that's whenI looked that up last night and I
saw he was born like June ofnineteen ninety nine, I was like,
I hate it. I hate thatguy. Have to all right, Well,
that that's the Blazer side of things. Well, hopefully I think we'll
(02:30:13):
see the same group that was availabletwo nights ago, but that's pending Jeff
Green's status. Well, maybe ifthey can't field an entire team, they
could like sign up mister Brizo Beansto play two guard for him or something.
Fizzy Lizzy Flizzy mob sports in atthe point. All right, final
segment of the week coming up nexthere on the eighteen. To be a
Houston sports fan isn't easy. Buthey, imagine living in Los Angeles or
(02:30:37):
New York and not understanding dignity inclass. Now that's gotta be hard,
really hard. Back to Adam Clintonhad Adam Wexler on on Sports Talk seven
ninety, have you been taking youacting wrestlers, Rusty? I thought she
(02:30:58):
said screw you Rusty? Is thatis that inappropriate censoring or unnecessary censoring that
Dan just did? Well. Ithink it was fine. It was part
of Court TV a few years ago. Well, why can't you say screw
you Rusty on television? We canstay it on the air. I just
did it. Well. Yeah,But so maybe they want to go for
a factor that needs to be strickenfrom the record, he's Jerry Jones.
(02:31:22):
He wasn't wearing an attorney. Hewasn't wearing a seersucker suit though that's kind
of his calling. Was he wearinga radioactive color tie like he usually does.
It's a power tie. I likedwhen he was representing Roger Clemens in
front of Congress. I liked thatCongress and was involved in steroids and sports.
They have nothing better to do withtheir time than to get to the
(02:31:45):
bottom of what's what's going on incheating baseball? How are they cheating?
You have nothing to add to that. It was a sad day in our
sporting lives. I'll never forget. That was one of the first times doing
this job where I was like,Wow, this is like wildfire. If
I want to take phone calls,I have an endless amount. I was
down the dial. YEP. Iremember going to that press conference at his
(02:32:09):
office. Oh, you were inthe boardroom. I remember that. Everybody
says he's done this, but whatthey haven't asked is this dude. Listen,
he said, you will about RustyHarden. That's who I'm calling if
I have the money and I'm introuble. If I get in that kind
of trouble. That's who I wanton my side, him or the guy
with the tank in his front yard. We served as co lead Trial Council
(02:32:30):
and the litigation in jury trial surroundingclaims made by Anna Nicole Smith and j
Howard Marshall Hill. First of all, it pronounced jury like he would because
you wouldn't say it like that jury, Jerry, Yes, Yes, in
a very notable and recognizable list ofclients. How old is he now?
He's got to be in his seventies. I believe he is. He's been
around since like God was a child. H he's old and he's still working,
(02:32:56):
still practicing consantual. That's my favoritepart of the whole show. On
his age. He's eighty two.I was gonna say seventy seven. He's
eighty two and he's still working. Why he's a named partner of Russell Harden
and Associates. Really, yeah, where do you get that name? You
know what's great is this isn't actuallygreat at all. This is actually the
opposite of great. He's one ofthose people that when he you know what
(02:33:20):
I'm gonna say, don't you it'sgonna be awesome whatever. It's one of
those people that when he stops,it's over, as in you mean like
Paterno, Yes, like these peoplethat work like this in these high pressure
cooker jobs. I'm asking like notsay he lets off steam in the front
row at Rockets games and has foryears. I know I see him every
(02:33:43):
night. Usually he's wearing said powertie. That's how you can spot him.
Well, also I know which seatshe sits in. But people that
work in those pressure cooker jobs, when they walk away, it's like not
long after. You remember who herepresented in twenty nineteen. You were definitely
on his side in this case baseballcase. You like to mention the defendants
(02:34:05):
as murderers, even though all theydo is run a baseball team. He
represented the player who was killed viafentanyl in the Angels Fiascas. Yeah,
so the murderers, you mean that'swhat I just said? Oh you said
killers, No, I said murderers, said they killed a baseball player.
(02:34:26):
You know what that makes them?Murderers? Got it? Stop killing your
players and then trying to say thatwhat the Astros did was worse, That's
all I ask? Is that toomuch to ask? Sports people? Anybody
is in part of organizations running organizations, plays for them, coaches for them,
or roots for them, to saythat it's probably bad what the Astros
(02:34:48):
did, but a lot of peopleare doing it and it wasn't murder.
See, that's the thing you wouldnever say the other if if the situation
was reversed or different, like yeah, the Astros can say because we all
know it's true. Other people theirteams have actually even gotten in trouble for
it, have been punished for it. But no one else has killed a
player. Not like that, Notlike that, I mean, yeah,
because that's actually bad. We'll revisitthis on Monday, what I'm about to
(02:35:11):
talk about, not what we've beentalking about, and I'll get your final
answer that whole question I mentioned viaFree Agency, the defensive tackles winning,
isn't he? Christian Wilkins has morethan half the vote. I didn't vote
for him, followed by Saquon Barkley, who as exactly one third of the
vote, and virtually about fifteen percentor fourteen percent have voted for either Hunter
or Simmons as Fuzzey mass So Wilkinsis currently I'll run the poll all the
(02:35:35):
way through when we get here onMonday. Who the Texans might like to
add, according to the fans, what percentage of the vote does Lincoln Riley
have. Lincoln Riley doesn't have anyof the vote. He still has a
job and is not being pursued bythe Texans, nor is he being pursued
