you probably go a little bit ofan earlier lunch, and then I'd
say about one thirty is the coffeerun because nobody really gets all the way

till five. Well, I wasabout to say, because it's a Friday,
I don't even know how many peopleare coming back from lunch. And
as the as we get closer tothe tournament, that's gonna be even more
the case because they're not even gonnacome into work. Those you see the
sales pit out here, which dayit is a dirt road out there?

because well, we gotta get thosegames in quicker. We can't have our
games going slow and not being asfast as NBA and football games. This

where a spring training game that startsat what it was today, eleven fifty
as usual. It was yeah,I think noon first pitch right around there.
So I'm honestly impressed that the Astrosmade it into the two o'clock hour.
The way things go these days.Yeah, well was it a couple
of days ago. That's what happened, and that's what precipitated Matt Thomas to
become a snack timer that day.But well he didn't greet the strippers today

or anything. Just gotta say,we feel cheated, like, how did
we not at least get him onthe phone, and I'll set to do
that. He is in Portland rightnow, which means he's probably eating lunch
if he's going according to their timezone clock, Yeah, two hours behind
probably something like that. So anyways, that's the latest as we will get
the show up and run. Ifyou're wondering where Wex is, he will

be along shortly, likely right aroundthe four o'clock mark is when he will
join us. And yeah, lateron tonight, Matt will work, albeit
for another entity. You know,the station's not paying him for the work
he's doing tonight, so he's literallyscrewing the company. Time for the Coach's

what are you guys doing you know, on the home floor that you're
not doing on the road, Likewe might need to kind of replicate that

a little bit and try to pullsome of that magic over at minute Made
Park. No, I could seethat being the case. We're up for
any scenarios of any kind. Butthe Astros weren't up for a scenario of
keeping this thing in a respect themanor early on six' three the final
today against the Phillies, And alot of that was because the guy that

I think a lot of people havean eye on for this upcoming year,
Spencer Arraghetty or Spaghetti as you cancall him, did not have it going
and as the Phillies were able toput up five runs over the first three
innings, he was responsible for allof that basically as he gave up He
only went three innings today, gaveup five runs on those five hits,

four earned runs. I guess Ishould say he did strike out a couple,
but you know, that's part ofworking out the kinks this time of
year. And I do think he'llend up factoring into things before all of
a sudden done. I just don'tknow how. Thirty three and thirteen that's
the number I look at today withSpencer Arraghetty, And I was having this
conversation with a buddy of mine lastnight of you know, people nitpicking spring

training outings, and I said,hey, look man, here's what the
goal is in spring training. Findthe zone. Hit the zone. If
I'm seeing walks, if i'm seeingyou know, just erratic control all those
things, which thirty three strikes thirteenballs does not show me that's the case,
then I'm a little concerned. Butit's a guy that said, hey,
here's what I got. And bythe way, he faced a pretty

good lineup over there and struck outBryce Harper today as well, so showing
he can kind of hold his owna little bit as well. Yeah,
a lot of familiar faces in thatlineup from the World Series still, and
it was It's just I always laughat that kind of thing because you know
that they would unquestionably take some ofthose innings and some of those games back
back from twenty twenty two in exchangefor a meaningless spring training game here today.

But Corey Jolks continues to have astrong springs. He got a homer
in today. Didn't get the Astroson the board until the sixth inning,
but definitely did and it winds upbeing a six to three final. We'll
discuss. We'll get our JV updatein in a three o'clock hour. We

and you knew we're going to departeven before the Astros, you know,
picked up a Josh hater and kindof rearrange things with their bullpen is where

was clicking amongst some of the headlines, like you type in his name and
you see who's writing what about it? Seattle Mariners sign world champion reliever to
one year deal. Yeah, theywould know. They're one of the teams

I mean, people talk about mehaving my sports hate and my hang ups
and my idiosyncrasies about all things youknow that I've I don't like or I
don't care for whatever. Not Alot of things are not on the list
of stuff that will make Adam Wexlerroll his eyes, recoil, whatever you
want to call it. He hatedhearing from anybody that was like where is

it? Stannic pitched, then hepitched his playoff. I mean, where
did what's Dusty doing? Like whyis he not coming out? And you
know, he wound up, hewound up being one of the best moments
in the post clincher celebration in thelocker room. Got a got a very

throaty wu from him, if youwill, holding up the trophy over his
head, in the clubhouse after thegame and after you know, Champagne's flying
everywhere. But one of the bestdudes ever. He and his wife very
active in the community, but obviouslygot the job done in time or two.
And last year, one of myfavorite moments of the season was him

getting after I don't even remember thename of the official, the umpire,
Yeah, a second base the ballyep in Dodger Stadium. Yeah, I
mean he was. That's his animatedand that's saying something for him because he's
got the hair, he's got thestrut and all that. He's got the
wild stuff. But that's that's abouthis most animated. I'd seen Ryan Stanek
in his time, and he wasbut we'll miss that guy. Miss what

he brought to the clubhouse. Allthe guys loved him. But he's a
Mariner one year deal, like allof the guys have left they've signed.
I don't think Mayton got a multiyear deal. I could be wrong on
him, but Hector nariis Ryan Stanekboth definitely one year deals. Yeah,
and also to Mayton, I believethat is what he is in Tampa and
watch he goes and enters the Tampapitching lab there and Bears with the Cubs,

almost an all Star there with Tampa. But no, you know,
happy for Ryan Stanik. I mean, you know, I know there was
a report earlier today that there wasa little bit of contact with the Astros,
but then they decided to go theway they went, and he decided
to continue down his path of allright, I guess we're looking for another
home. And it makes the Marinerswith him there because I share the same
sentiment about him as well, greatguy, always approachable in the clubhouse,

just somebody can go and talk with. I mean him being an Arkansas guy,
I'd always talk SEC football with hima little bit. But you know,
it's just it's what the Mariners,It's kind of the whole thing with
why I don't like them is muchlike the Rangers shoehorning themselves into the Astros
cheater hate kind of stuff. It'slike, why are you involved in this?
Like you have nothing to do withthis, Like this would be like

this would be like another SEC footballexample. This would be like Mississippi State
trying to chirp Alabama, Like youcan't chirp somebody that you're nowhere even close
to being you don't belong in thediscussion. No, one hundred percent.
You're You're not even a little brother. The Rangers are still a little brother.
I don't care they won last year. You're a second cousin. What's
removed? If that you kind ofI think you snuck into the wedding like

a crasher. You're not even related, but you make up family stories like
like Vince Vaughan did. That's that'sthe Mariners, because again, what did
they have. They had the electricfactory, they had the best setting you
could have hoped for in twenty plusyears against the Astros, and I mean
those they were down two oh,they had taken a huge, huge haymaker

at the hands of You're not Alvarezafter game one. In fact, I
talked to somebody after the game.I still won't reveal who this was,
but someone in the media was like, I don't think they come back from
that. I think they get swept. That's exactly what happened, but it's
not at all how we thought itwould happen. Don't forget. Don't forget
the CounterPunch in game two as well. I mean he got him with another

one where it was kind of tothe point where everybody watching those games were
like, why are you still pitchingto him? Well, like, I
guarantee you there are even people inSeattle at the time that were like,
why are we throwing anything that hecan possibly put a barrel on? Because
he was that locked in he wasin. What's funny about that postseason was
that's kind of was his bookend.H he didn't do a lot in between

those two games. And what themammoth blast that he had in Game six
against the Phillies, Well, Imean, I love the thing that's making
its rounds right now on Twitter ofif you can hear this picture and somebody
posted you know, of course theball leaving the bat and I wanted to
right back this game Scott turned upsidedown because I mean, that's I'll turn
the picture up side I will alwaysYeah, actually, that's a good idea.

I probably should have responded with thatof hey, post this upside down
so we'll really get it. Butno, I mean, that's that's been
yord On for the better part ofhis Astros career is when he's on a
heater, he is on a heater, and when he is not really seeing
it at the time, you're kindof like, are injuries involved? What's
happening here? And you know,you just kind of find hope he finds
his way, but eventually he doesto being able to get it going again.

It was funny because I was listeningto a lot of the broadcast today.
Todd Kallis was on the radio side, So if you were listening here
on Sports Talk seven ninety you heardkind of a combination of Space City Home
Network on the play by play andthen what was left of Sparky Lord do
the guy gargle with broken glass thismorning? Yeah, dealing with some allergies,
which I can absolutely relate to,because while Dan was talking just now,

I snorted some affron. Yeah that'sthe magic of radio. You didn't
hear any of that, but itis just this is like it's March eighth.
The pollen is starting to coat thevehicles. If you have a black
vehicle like I do, you canreally see it. There's no sense in
washing your car because it's going tobe covered the next day with a pretty
gratuitous amount of that dust. Butit's like, I'm not usually a spring

allergy guy. I'm usually a fallallergy. Like the ragweed type situation.
But if it gets to you,man, oh my goodness. And it
got to spark you today, Andas the innings were progressing, in fact,
the last inning last I guess thebottom of the eighth. I heard
it as I was driving in andTodd was like, you've got one more

half inning to make it for Sparkybecause it was like going quick. Yeah,
I gotta believe Matt Boltz, theon site engineer for Astros Radio,
probably as Sparky leaves the booth,behinding him a nice cup of hot tea,
probably going into the dining room rightthere getting them one. It's probably
what he needs, you know,get a little good night's sleep and hopefully

be able to get back at ittomorrow. But yeah, with the pollen
thing, I've lived that in larargeamounts. It doesn't usually affect me,
but I think it's starting to becauseI'm getting older. And here's the thing
though, too, is if yougo through a stretch like obviously we've had
some rain come through the area today, so it's kind of tamped down just
a little bit. But the realsign that it's bad is when you go
through stretches and say you're just sittingout in your backyard, a little breeze

comes through, sheets of it comeoff the trees. Oh yeah, that's
the worst. That's absolutely the worst. And again, like I said,
I'm not usually a guy that getsaffected by that, but I think I'm
starting to because it's March eighth,and this is like the fourth or fifth
quote unquote head cold. You've gotcrud and it's both me and the wife.
So we used to blame it onour kid because we've got a five

year old and it's like, oh, the Petrie dish that he goes to
each and every day is bringing thestuff home. And that has happened a
lot. But I don't know.Maybe in my older age, I'm getting
more sensitive. I hear that happens. But we'll see. All Right,

The side is retired, but damagedone as a Dodger scored three times to
reclaim the league, and Stannik isfurious. He is yelling at Junior Valentine,
the second base umpire, who hasus back to him, and pitching
coach Josh Miller out to restrain Stannik, who is now yelling at Benny Gonzales,

the home plate umpire. Stannick absolutelyfurious with the ball call that allowed
to go ahead run to score.Now that is clearly not the highlight of
Stannick's run with the Astros, butthat was from last season. It was
a Saturday. I know it's aSaturday, and I'll tell you how I
know I was. It was meand Junior only that weekend. I don't

know where the misses and the daughterhad gone, but they were out of
town. Was that buzzfest weekend?Maybe it was Buzzfest. Maybe that's what
it was. And she wasn't goingto be there that night, like it
was just gonna be me and him, and I was putting together patio furniture
at the time in our living room, not on the patio, right,
So I'm watching the game and I'mgetting But you know, when you're watching

sporting events, especially at a pivotalage like he was at the time,
I think he was probably he wasstill four, but he's watching everything I
do. And you know, Iknow this isn't gonna surprise a lot of
you listening. I'm a little ragywhen it comes to watching my teams,
especially if they're championship contenders, andso, you know, anything that goes
south from from a stupid point ofview. I told you the other night

when I was watching the Rockets justcompletely botched that twenty point lead against the
Clippers. I was getting angrier andangrier. Me and Fred van Fleet had
that in common, and he hadfinally had enough with forty eight seconds remaining.
I had turned the TV off wellbefore that. Once the Clippers took
the lead and that phantom call onKawhi happened, That's when I shut off
the TV because I didn't need tosee the rest. Yeah, I was

(17:52):
gonna say, I mean, Ijust from rumbored back to that series last
year. So frustrating Friday night,you feel like you could have had it,
you just didn't get the go ahead. Hits that happens sometimes, that's
Saturday. It was a rough onefrom Brian to Bray You and he had
to try to have Ryan Stannick becausethe braid you one. The part about
it that scared me is I waslike, oh no, this is old

to bray You like this is hecan't find it, Like, do not
let that guy back in the building. That is not the guy we ever
want to see again. And thenon Sunday they almost did it again because
Montero gave up like four runs totie the ball game up. But that
was what I call that Sunday game, the Jose of bray You game.
I remember that he was pretty muchtheir offense that game. It was a
weird. It was a weird firstseason for him in an Astros uniform.

I hope it's just even slightly betterthis year. Postseason, he can't really
complain about too much, especially theopening round. But going back to Stanic,
the funny thing about that, Ithink about that whole incident where he's
yelling first at Junior Valentine. Youknow what I remember the most about that
whole thing. It wasn't necessarily himyelling at Junior, although that's part of

it. And then it wasn't necessarilyhim turning his attention then to the homeplate
umpires you heard there. It wasthe fact that junior Valentine stood there like,
why did he put his hands inhis armpits like that and make that
face while Stanik yelled at him.Yeah, he looked pretty dumb. He

had the parcel. He looked prettydumb. No he did. He had
like the par slips like kind oflike, I know I messed up,
but there's nothing you can do aboutit. I mean that pretty much was
the look that he had. Yeah, there's one thing I've always noticed with
umpires is when they know they gotit right, that's when you know they're
not going to run the guy quickly. They're gonna kind of just let him
get it out. And then atthe end it's kind of the I've got

the trump card for you. Igot the call right, Skip, I
got it right, And you goback and look at the replate and you're
like, hm, he did.When they run the when they run the
managers quickly, that's when they're notsure that they got it right. Now.
That's good. I mean, it'sthat's a pretty good rule of thumb
because more often than not, whenyou look back at some of these incidents,
that's how it unfolds. No,it's one hundred percent how it unfolds,

and you know, now with theuse of instant replay, it kind
of alleviates some of those things,so you don't see ejections quite as much.
But no, that's usually the ruleof thumb is you look at the
replay and you're like, he's gonnagive him a runway here because he knows
that he got the call. Right. Yeah, I uh, I don't
like him because of his face.That was the problem with me last year.
I mean, we've got you know, quite got quite a list now,

I mean we got him, wegot Vic, Cara Paza, I
mean, Angel Hernandez is everyone.C B. Buckner is everyone. I'm
trying to think who else. Whowas the guy when they played against the
Rangers opening series of I Believe thenineteen season that he was behind oh Ron
Kolpa. He was another one.No, he's not great. No,

yeah, I mean, and hewas also too. He was being a
complete ump show back there, rippingoff his mask, throwing out aj doing
all those different types of things.Yeah, it's the rule of thumb with
umpires. Never get into an umpshow because you look like an idiot when
you do that. Nobody's there tosee you. Nobody cares that you're there.
And for the most part, ifyou don't know umpire's names, that's
a good thing. No, thatwell, that's a good thing in any

sport, not to go off ona complete umpire or referee or official tangent.
But that's what we always talk about, you know, entirely too many
names in both the NBA and MajorLeague Baseball. You know, some of
the usual suspects in the NFL,but typically that's more so because they are
a on camera personality when you're watchingon TV, and well and basically if

you're in the stadium, it's thesame thing. I mean, for the
longest time, you know, youknew who the who had the guns.
You know, what was his nameagain, Irid Hockey And now his son's
in there, Sean Hockeley is nowe lite official. But with ed you
know, in addition to you know, one thing that took away from what
he should have been known for withhis job was also his readings of war

and peace. When trying to explainwhy a call was made, it did
get lengthy. Oh my god,like the left guard moved slightly before and
it's just like it just say falsestart number seventy three. That's all we
need from you. Keep it moving. I love that. I absolutely love
that. That is so good.Warrant piece. That is a long one.
I don't think I've actually read thatone. It's been a while since
I've actually read a book, sothat one probably is way down the list.

I was one of those kids thatonce you were assigned something, oh
yeah, that's when it became,you know, work, and therefore I

are our lums of the Great HighSchool on Memorial forty five hundred, Forever

kind of gets to a point whereyou're like, this might not be good

I was like, don't admit that, but yeah, I mean, you
know, to say like I'm likea book before bed type of guy.

kind of heard rumblings about but hadn'treally seen. And then he gave us.
Then he gave us the real trumpcard. Underneath he could potentially,
if he wanted to, you know, just leave the show that day and

And again, I know how thissounds coming from me even before you
join the show. This is avery contentious talking point on the program because
I would get mad at the Texansfor doing their their feature Jersey's Day on

who cares start winning games? Now. The problem with that was they
weren't even trying to be a seriousfranchise at the time, which is probably
why I got as mad as Idid about it, and I didn't usually
get that mad, and WEX woulddo the usual, Well, this is
something that every team does, youknow, So why are you getting mad
at the Texans. Well I'll tellyou why I was getting mad at the

Texans because they weren't serious. ButI am probably as excited as I've ever
been to see a team. Theonly team that cataptus is the Rockets.
Finally, after all these years ofme begging and pleading, you know,
get get it right and go backto the ketchup of mustards. You know
what this is. This is JoeBiaginie. This is a guy who's not

very good, not very funny,having goofy jokes because we have patients for
goofy hijinks from organizations and all oftheir you I don't know, showing Davis
Mills walking out onto the field beforethe game and having a post ready to
ball out against who because it ain'tgonna be against those guys today. I'm

not winning and you have that onsocial media. Look at the mentions,
and you're gonna have You're gonna havethis true who are just like I don't
care, man like actually care aboutwinning, and then I will care enough
to not be snarky and mean backto you in return. And I don't
know if blocks were being handed outby the social media team over there,
but they're probably warranted at a certainpoint, but also too as well,

if you were actually doing your job, you're probably like, yeah, we're
not very good. So if peopleare upset with us, I kind of
get it. I get it too. I get it too, but I
also get I get the vitriol Ido, but I am I'm looking forward
to, uh what's revealed. It'sperceived when your team is that bad that
you're you're kidding yourself, You're bsingyourself of just how bad things are.

And I understand, you know,you want to be positive, you want
to be hey, you know,we love our guys, all that kind
of stuff. Yeah, that's fine. But again, now that the Texans
are winning again, when they dothings like that, like CJ. Stroud
coming out of the tunnel. Thenyou have people who are like the Spurs
guy with you the other night,that are like, oh, he's gonna
put up four tds today a forourtuddy day from CJ. And that's what

winning does for you. It's kindof like a head coach that has all

even better for that offense, andon and on and on. What if

so funny. I heard somebody onone of the overnight shows here when I
was driving home one night of saying, he's a backup at best in the

twenty six touchdowns and eight interceptions,a ninety eight point zero quarterback rating.
Yeah, he's a backup. Stayon overnights. You're you're doing great,

oh, well, this guy's gonnabe lucky to get a job in the
NFL. Like Kelly is, youhave two teams already who are willing to

say, yeah, if we hadthis guy, we upgrade immediately for the
production. He gives you no look, Daniel Jones and whoever they are trotting
out there in Pittsburgh at any giventime. You know, whether it's Mason
Rudolph was starting games for them.That's all you need to know about.
And again it's not the Steelers area situation where they're not quite ready made

around the quarterback position. In otherwords, if they just fix that,
they're going to be awesome. Butthey're further along than a lot of other
teams in similar position, you know, similar states of flux at that position.

ago, where it used to beno matter what, early twenty tens,

we have to pay them. Wehave to pay them, like we can't
lose them. Do you really thinkhe's worth that money? Doesn't matter?
We don't want to go with whatwe don't know. At least we know
that they're good enough to do thejob, so that's good enough to keep
them around. College quarterback play hasgotten even better over the last few years.
The quote unquote pro offense, theI formation, it's gone out of
both leagues, so you don't havethat anymore because it's a boring, antiquated

old system that just doesn't work anymore. So now you've got you know,
quarterbacks in college running RPOs, doingdifferent types of things schematically that you do
on the NFL level. That guyswhen they get to the NFL there's not
as much of a learning curve anymore. It's verbage pretty much at that point.
You're telling them what to do,you know, from certain scheme points,

put Simmons because I like Simmons.I think most people agree Barkley's the best
