(00:02):
Two lifelong Houston sports guys named Adamtalking your Teams series, Adam Clinton and
Adam Wexler are the A Team Ateam that's the first of the back to
back home runs the Astros hit todaywas followed by the home run from Trey
(00:23):
Cabbage, the only two runs ofthe game for the Astros and this four
to two loss to the Cardinals. It was also your play, excuse me,
your player of the game. That'syiner ds three games, three homers
after hitting only three homers the entireseason before the last three games. Player
of the Game brought to you byTwin Peaks. The relief pitcher of the
(00:43):
game goes to the last of thetwo relief pitchers that came in to finish
things off after Renel Blancos five andtwo thirds debut in an Astros uniform.
For a former Astros draft pick,Nick Hernandez, you have h product drafted
by the Astros in twenty sixteen, reacquired by the Astros earlier this week in
trade. And he went out thereand made quick work of the Cardinals in
(01:07):
the ninth inning. I was ableto get three up, three down,
needed just fourteen pitches to do it. He was on the roster today after
Parker Mashinski had thrown each of thelast couple of days, and they wanted
to make sure they had another armavailable today and that was Hernandez Sean Duban
two and a third. He onlyneeded twenty four pitches to get seven outs.
That clearly was the theme of theday in this game. Throw strikes,
(01:30):
sit guys down, and move onto the next hitter. Duman's two
and a third gives him the extremeperformance of the game. Brought to you
by Synergenics. Did you see therelease about the All Star voting? By
the way, just kind of offtopic here, but yet it's iron All
Star voting open now. Astros havenine representatives, ballatable representatives. Name them
(01:51):
everybody you would think, and JohnSingleton rather than Jose Braby to go.
I knew you would nail it.I mean again, I could run through
the list, but I think everybody. Mauricio Dubon is one of the nine.
And yeah, I did notice thatwhen I looked over what would be
there. Singleton is listed in abray you again, number of its bats
(02:12):
time spent here, and I knowthat's roughly the same for those two,
but that makes more sense. Neitheris likely. I can't say for sure,
but neither is likely to win afan vote. Bet my life on
it. I can say it forsurely not going to be selected by the
players, coaches, or special Commissionervote if need be. I think they
(02:34):
will in fact have each of thosedays off. They'll play on Sunday,
they all start week, will beginwith the activities on Monday, home run
derby game on Tuesday. Astros offWednesday and Thursday, and then back at
it on Friday of that All StarWeek, and I will be in Cancun
that entire time, So suck it. As we sit here right now,
I would think there will be threeAstros participating, maybe four. So he
(03:00):
had Jordan and Tucker last season, correct, Yes, that was it.
There was nobody there was. Idon't think there was anyone else for the
Astros. Jose Al Tuvey's involvement inthe All Star Game was taken away from
him during the World Baseball Class. He wasn't gonna have enough games played to
make it. He played well enough, but he had not been on the
field nearly long enough to warrant it. Would that be the three this year?
(03:23):
No, I think the three thatshould make it as of right now,
and I expect them to continue. And today's game hurts, but it
would have been Renel Blanco, KyleTucker, and Jose al Tuve. Jordan
Alvarez is probably knocking on the door, especially since the position he plays is
available, because I think both JuanSoto and Aaron Judge are outfielders, so
(03:44):
there aren't that many other outfielders besidesKyle Tucker. Hitter spot that could easily
be his. It's gonna be anauseating amount of Yankees in this year's All
Star Game. Nauseating Those two willmake it. Luis Heel has been the
best American League pitcher this year,so he will also make it. Clay
Holmes has a really good chance tomake it. Anthony Volpi has a good
chance to make it. It's five. Uh yeah, that sounds like that's
(04:08):
probably the five. Though the bestteam in baseball is totally reasonable. I
don't know, they're not the bestteam in baseball. The Phillies are.
They're definitely right now, you're takingthe Phillies or the Yankees. I'm taking
the Yankees in a seven game seriesright now. I mean, if I'm
really going to start a seven gameseries right now, the World Series.
Yes, if it starts right nowlike tonight, I will kick your ass.
With the Phillies. That means GarrettCole is going to be pitching in
(04:30):
it because he had a rehab startyesterday and everything went fine. He might
have one more and then he'll bea Yankee again. So how many starts
has he made this year? None? And look where they are. They're
fantastic. Well, he won't evenoutpitch Luis Heel. Louise Hill has been
insane. Yeah, and which noone was expecting. Well, he's a
rookie. I don't think anybody expectsthat. But I would be the best
pitcher in baseball right the league.Yeah, totally agree. But they also
(04:53):
have the two best offensive players inthe league. You only have nine spots
in the order. Every team getsnine. They have the two best.
This Phillies team this year is notlike the team that faced off against the
Astros. That was like a feelgood story. I know that everybody thought
they were just gonna ride that wave, kind of like the Nationals did in
nineteen against the Astros. They've beenawesome from the start, like the Yankees.
(05:15):
Yankees got a nice four game boostby coming to Houston and playing this
version, this carcass that wears Astro'suniform but is in no way, shape
or form, plays like the lastseven years of this Astros organization. But
I don't know, I couldn't disagreemore. I think the Phillies straight up
in a seven game series right now. Like you again, I know,
(05:38):
you're playing the first half of theYankee season, which they've done a lot
of times in recent years. They'vehad a very good first half and then
something inevitably happens, injuries, justplay poorly, combination of both, something
always happens to them, or ifthey get to the postseason they run into
the bus saw that is the Astros. That won't happen this year. I
know this is, you know, not all of everything, not the end
(06:00):
all be all, but I dolike to note this because it still holds
a little bit of weight to beThey both have forty three and nineteen records.
The Yankees are sixteen and eight intheir twenty four games against teams above
five hundred. There are only ahandful of teams now. There's seven teams
in the American League above five hundred. There are four teams in the National
League above five hundred. So intelling you that the Yankees are sixteen and
(06:24):
eight in those games, what doyou think the Phillies are in their games
against teams over five hundred? Howmany have they played? Well, let
me just tell you this. TheAstros have four more wins against teams over
five hundred than the Phillies do,four more wins over teams over five hundred
than the best National League team recordwise does. And I don't have the
standings in front of me. Thatwould probably help the Dodgers, the Braves,
(06:48):
the Brewers, that is it.That's the only three other teams,
three division leaders in the Braves. How many times have they played each of
those teams? They have eight gamesagainst teams over five hundred this year.
The Phillies wow, Well again,it doesn't mean they're not good, but
the league is a little bit watereddown, super awesome, top heavy,
(07:11):
and then a bunch of okay teams. The Yankees and the Mariners recently played
a four game set, correct,Yeah, and they split it. As
I recall, maybe it's gonna beinteresting to see who's in the ALCS this
year. That's not the Astros.Well, let's hear from the Astros manager
here as we get things wrapped uphere on the Astros tenth inning show,
(07:32):
fire off on a bunch of otherthings over the course of the day in
the world of sports beyond and stillincluding the Astros as we continue with the
A team. But here's Joe Aspotafrom after the game today before they take
their day off and head out toplay the Angels. Astros lose four to
two. Here's Joe. Yeah,he's pregame swings, kind of got the
(07:53):
hand sore, but he was readyto pinch it there laying the game.
You know, he was available Tuckerpower already and the scratch bread and that
the playing at all if you thinkfor you or your group, No,
you know he's not ideal, butyou know, boys are ready to compete
and and and and play. Youknow, it's it's a team and those
(08:15):
are two very important pieces of ourof our ball club. But you know,
we gotta find ways to to grindthrough, you know, stretches like
this. You know, I throwyou through the ball really well. You
know he was you know, hewas in the zone, makes all his
pitches really well. You know, miss a few spots there, but again
(08:39):
another qualities start, you know, throwing the ball really well, give us
a chance to win where he lookedlike he had short that guy out for
two outs and ugly arms how toflat? Was that the way that turned
that out? You know, it'sdisappointing, but you know, umpires,
mis pitches all the time. Youstill got to find a way to you
know, to get passed that andand and make pitches. But you know,
(09:01):
it was it was a it wasa big pitch at the moment,
but you know we we had opportunitiesthere later in the game to kind of
make up for that. You know, that's kind of like the nick that
I saw many years ago. Theslider really good. You know, he's
the funkiness to his delivery and youknow the fastball kind of sneak up on
(09:22):
you. I thought he was,you know, really solid inning. Yeah,
with the opate tomorrow and just interms of the tim of right here,
what's a realistic best case scenarios inthat? Seriously, I'm not sure
that. Yeah, you know,I think Bregman is in a better spot
to start on Friday, just basedon today and what I've seen and you
(09:48):
know what I what we had today. But you know, Tucker is making
progress. But you know, wewe had to wait and see the travel
and give our training staff an opportunityto work with those guys. I'm much
you've seen diners promos grow. Wejust last three games and vented for Boward.
Yeah, you know, really goodbats overall, Like he's swinging up
(10:11):
better pitches, driving the ball toright, right feel. That's the yawner
that we know. Now he's gotto maintain that right He's got to continue
to make those adjustments. Pitchers aregoing to make adjustments. He's got to
stay with it himself. And andand what I always remind you on here
is that even when you swing thebat or you're not swinging the bat,
(10:31):
your number one priorities you you're acatcher first. You're a catcher first.
Mentality. That's very important. Hesaid, was available for me trying to
avoid having to go to to therewas a spot there where we had an
opportunity to you know, win thegame. Big spot he was he was
going to come up and hit whathasn't happened for block of these last two
(10:54):
starts. After he did so well, you know those first services, But
I think he's throwing the ball exceptionallywell. If he keeps doing what he's
doing, I take that every outingjust that much. No, you know
what, I think he's throwing theball really well. I'm not gonna Terry
pick here one pitcher one there, quality, start, compete, take us
(11:18):
deep in the game. Gives thisteam an opportunity to pay, an opportunity
to win. That's what we wantfor our starters. Couldn't agree more.
I do think Renelle Blanco threw theball well. And there are a couple
other questions there. Of note,Janner Diaz at the plate, they need
him clearly, offense needs him tobe a little bit more productive, and
over the last three games he hasbeen nothing wrong with how he's caught the
ball as the leader of the pitchingstaff so to speak, but most of
(11:41):
the season offensively has been very underwhelming. So if this is a sign of
him getting going, And then theother thing that Joe talked about of note,
as they head into this weekend series, if Alex Bregman is capable of
getting into the lineup as soon astheir very first game on Friday, maybe
you have him going. And thatcontinues yard on Alvarez, Well, he
did not anything productive today. Stilllooks like he is driving the ball a
(12:03):
little bit more and is continuing tobe productive. If Janer Diaz is now
doing that, if you can continueJake Myers being a big part of this
offense, although he had a hugefirst twenty twenty three days of May and
the last ten eleven, twelve dayshave been not quite as much, but
still fully further ahead of so manyothers. They just need more from the
whole lineup. It's not gonna becarried by one or two guys. Doesn't
(12:26):
sound like Kyle Tucker is going tobe playing as early as Friday, it'd
be four days removed from the injury. And then you start getting into have
they made the right call? Youknow? I think waiting and seeing is
certainly the right thing to do onthe front side of any potential il stint
when you're dealing with your most productiveoffensive player over the course of the season.
But at some point, when you'regetting closer to the fourth, fifth,
(12:48):
sixth, seventh day, you mightrethink it and say, well,
we've already missed seven. It's onlygoing to cost us three more. And
then he's even that much healthier whenhe returns and Joe's not playing one or
today, two men down. Iguess Bregnan was apparently available, as Joe
said, That's just something to consideras they begin a six game road trip
(13:09):
against these West Coast foes. Angelsfirst Giants last back home for just three
against the Tigers, three against theWhite Sox, O's Rockies, Mets,
Blue Jays, Twins, Marlins, and Rangers series all still before the Astros
get to the All Star Break.Oof, that's a stretch right there.
(13:30):
We got a stretch to go hereuntil six o'clock here on the eight team.
We'll get to some other topics besidesthe Astros, like the Texans,
for example, when we come backone of the train crashers, Frank's at
deep to left center looking up seeAtlanta DC, Sanior Diaz Sports Talk seven
(13:52):
nineties. It's your home for AstrosBasebay. Yes, other thing's happening here,
and we will continue to welcome yourthoughts in on all of those things
at seven one three, two,one two five, seven ninety. But
talk a little bit about the footballteam that's pretty much done now likely until
July eighteenth, Texans presumed opening oftraining camp, they'll make their way out
(14:15):
of town as the month of Julyends. They'll stay out of town,
likely for an extended period of time, with both games being on the road
and not too far from one another. First game in Campton and second game
with these Steelers, and then probablyreturn home to wrap up their preseason,
their training camp and get ready tohumiliate the Indianapolis Colts in Week one of
the NFL season in Indianapolis against AnthonyRichardson. But today was the second of
(14:41):
their two day mini camp over atthe facility. I was, I know,
I'm sure huge surprise. I wasone of the early arrivals. Wanted
to make sure I was locked inplace so I could fire up the Dana
Brown interview and I wouldn't have tobe bothered by others or other things,
so I could listen in what wasn'ta press conference weekly appearance on The Salisbury
(15:03):
Show with Brian and Sean. SoI wanted to see what he had to
say because it also very not surprisingly. It was moments after the Astros sent
their release out about Urkati and Javier, and we'll have some more thoughts on
that they're both out for the season. Both having surgery, both will take
place this week tomorrow before Christian Xavierand already potentially for jose Erkeaty. But
(15:24):
yeah, over at the facility,it was pretty easy to see it was
going to be tough to have afull practice outside. It was dark.
A joke was made to Demico Ryan'shours later when he hit the podium that
it was their first night practice, that's how dark and ominous it was outside.
They got in some drills, theydid a little bit of a wide
receiver running back work, and thenwith the rain and the horn coming down,
(15:48):
it was time to head inside thebubble. Had not been inside the
bubble in quite some time. It'spretty crowded in there, with all the
equipment they have on the sidelines andin the space behind the end zone where
they can put some their equipment anda host of versa climbers for those of
you exercise enthusiasts out there. Andthen they went through their practice in the
bubble. Nice enough of the Texansto have the defensive lineman all the way
(16:11):
over on our side of the field, which is a complete change from almost
every other practice we attend. Veryhard to see, very hard to watch
them go through their work very hardto kind of gauge what they might look
like as a group, and thatwe got the opportunity to do that today.
Denico Autry, who did practice yesterdaynot practice today, There's nothing wrong
with him. A Daniel Hunter andWill Anderson were going through all their drill
(16:32):
work right in front of us,as guided by their new defensive line coach,
Rod Wright. Hopefully many people hereremember Rod from his days at Hastings,
his days with the Longhorns, andthen many days since as a coach.
He was the assistant d line coachfor the Texans last year and now
moves into the head role among thedefensive line coaches. Pretty easy. I
(16:55):
thought to see that Will Anderson ismuch bigger, and we didn't ask him
for a figure year or what doyou weigh or did you put on weight,
because I do think it's rather obviousactually looking at him last year,
I thought it would be obvious. He was thin. He was not a
large defensive end by any means, probably among the smallers in the entire league.
So not only seeing him on thefield because there were no pads on
(17:15):
so you get a realistic look athim. He also spoke with us today
at the podium, And I've seenhim at the podium now enough times.
I know what he used to looklike, and now I know what he
currently looks like. He's definitely andacknowledged the saying with his nutrition, his
workouts and things, he is abigger, stronger, he added faster.
I'm sure that's true, but Icouldn't discern that. No. I mean,
(17:37):
considering that he did look the wayhe did his rookie year and accomplished
what he did, that should terrifyopposing quarterbacks that are going to be on
the textan schedule. But I meanwe interviewed him prior to the Lombardi Awards,
and if I'm not mistaken, Ithink you probably said I know I
didn't say it, but I kindof feel like you did. As you
(18:00):
have an interview guest every once ina while, after some inning questions from
me, you usually jump in andsay, talking to here with Will Anderson
or talking with Chandler Rome, whoeverour guests is. I really feel like
you said talking with future Houston Texansdefensive lineman Will Anderson. Well, I
was trying to manifest it. Andthis was January, prior to his arrival.
Wow, but the draft you knewwhat yeh the Texans had, You
(18:22):
knew what state their team was in. Yeah, but I was saying that
because I would have them do thatinstead of taking a quarterback. Because,
as I know in my all myomnipotent knowledge of all things NFL Draft,
there was no waste c J Stroudwas worth wasting the number two pick on.
At the time, those conversations werealso how to show it's okay.
Yeah, but but I remember thinking, Wow, you're you're an addresser rusher.
(18:45):
You're slight like I have no doubtthat you are, because it says
here on the paper you are.And I know i've seen you play in
college, but and I have nodoubt that you're good at it because you're
you know, highly touted, butlike real, because I remember JJ seeing
him his rookie year, being aroundhim, I was over there much more
(19:06):
on a regular basis at the time, just given what I was doing on
a day to day basis, andeven as a rookie, which he'd no
doubt put on an enormous amount ofsize. Even after his rookie year,
JJ was a monster his rookie year. He was much bigger than Will Anderson.
Soccer goalie JJ Watt. You knowKent four looks like j Watt Will
(19:29):
Anderson. I think he's still biggerthan he probably, yeah, I mean
it's closed that these also sixty six. And it does bring me to the
other two players that were at thepodium today, and I mentioned both of
them, Denico Autry and Daniel Hunter. They're not small at all. Oh
they are lean, but they arebig, big defensive ends. In an
Autry's case, he's going to playa lot at all spots along the defensive
(19:51):
line, so not exclusively a defensiveend. We will hear from will Anderson.
He had definitely had the best lineof the day, but I wanted
to get Todaniel Hunter first because he'splaying opposite him. I think the duo
last year of John Gernard and WillAnderson was sensational. I don't want to
undersell how tremendous the twenty twenty threeseason was for Gernard in both respects stopping
(20:14):
the run and getting into the backfieldafter the quarterback, because I think he
was tremendous in both cases, andI think he's going to continue that in
Minnesota. Danielle Hunter is much bigger, has a longer history of being successful
as a pass rushing disruptive force andwas again last year. So it'll be
a little different look and probably alittle different results. You may get more
(20:34):
of that, and maybe he's notquite as strong against the run, or
maybe in this defense will prove tobe capable of helping them in the way
that they want against the run.But the edge duo in and of itself
is what I think is going tokeep offensive coordinators up at nights throughout the
week and hopefully again on Saturday nightas they finalize game plans for playing against
Daniel Hunter and Will Anderson Junior andasked that question today, is this something
(20:59):
that is going to be difficult foropposing teams with you playing on the edge?
Hunter said this are you come tothe game, A team gotta choose
a side. So you either gotWill or you either got me or whoever's
in there in rushing the passer,So you hip me or you chip him.
I mean, either way, we'regonna try ma impressure. Most NFL
(21:23):
teams will still only play five offensivelinemen. You may have a big tight
end. Maybe in the red zone, you've got to tackle eligible. But
what he said is essentially, you'regoing to have the additional blocker, whether
it's a running back or a tightend as the guy who's there to chip.
Well, what are you gonna doon the other side, and how
(21:45):
are you going to handle the rest? And that's why I think the addition
of him and Autry specifically, thesethree guys should have minimum thirty sacks between
the three of them, and Ithink that's where this defense will be significantly
more capable than they were last year, off a year where they set the
team record in sacks. That's crazy, by the way, because I mean,
(22:07):
best case scenario, you gotta thinkback. You can't. You've got
to block out everything that we knowhappened going into twenty twenty three. What
was your best case scenario for theTexans defense in particular, forget CJ and
all that, just the defense.I mean, I had I knew that
Collins was a good player, andI felt like Rankins coming in was gonna
be good. Thought how sound Ridgewaywould help turned out and got hurt and
(22:30):
basically was a non factor, Andyou hoped, well Anderson would have a
nice rookie season and John Gernard ifhealthy, I knew he could play,
and then he was even better. But I think about Derek Stingley right just
talking about the front the focus ofour conversation, each of the players that
ended up playing. I thought Ihad a better season than I would have
expected, And when all four guysdo that, you really do get a
lot of things done. If yougo back to Stingley, I felt like
(22:52):
he was good. I felt likewe knew he was good even in a
short time he was on the field, while Jalen Petrie took a step back
ish, no question about it.I don't even have to saunter through my
comments, But I don't take astep back last year like I don't think
it's a Trevor Lawrence step back, like I think he'll bounce back this year.
I don't think he's going to continueto almost regress the way. It
(23:15):
was a matter figured he and thecoaching staff having a little bit of trouble
figuring out the best way for himto play fast and the best place for
him to be on the field. And I hope that this year, a
year together, those things move away. Jimmy Ward being on the field more
probably helps he needs to stay healthyin order to do that. Well,
I'll tell you why I bring allthat up, and specifically as it pertains
(23:36):
to the rush, the front fourand you know, just the rush in
general when we come back, becauseit's going to be key obviously, but
it's going to be key to helpingout the other side of the football and
what the Texans are hoping to accomplishhere in twenty twenty four. We will
do that when we come back.Continues. It is the A team here
(23:59):
on Sports seven ninety. So thisis gonna be I mean, this is
beyond captain obvious statement right here. But you know, everybody has high hopes
for this upcoming Texan season, andI think rightfully. So you see what
CJ. Stroud was able to accomplishin his rookie year, which was a
lot. By the way, it'snot insignificant that he not only made the
(24:19):
playoffs but also advanced in the playoffs. Given where the Texans were before he
was drafted, their uptick in competitionis significant on paper. No matter what
stand Norfleet wants to argue with meabout, you don't know that their schedule
is gonna be tough. Yes Ido, Yes, I Do you know
(24:40):
it, don't you? It's absolutelygonna be tougher. I wonder if only
backup quarterbacks played against them this year, would I still consider it tougher?
And that's the backups of the particularteams on their schedule. If you got
to play Mahomes backup and you gotto play the EFC East's backups and everything
all along the way, would Idefinitely know didn't get better. And that's
why I'm saying, and it's solaughable, it's unlikely. It never happens.
(25:04):
Even a couple of them. Theirschedule is more difficult, and just
all you have to do is reallyis look at last year's teams that they
played. Just take the Colts.Run down the quarterback by themselves. Just
take the Colts because you know you'replaying them twice and they beat you one
of those games where their starter didn'teven finish the first half. The Texans
are also not playing those teams withlast year's roster either. They look like
(25:29):
they attacked the offseason knowing that we'rethe hunted. Our schedules different. We
have a second year quarterback we alreadyknow we can win a Super Bowl with,
so we're not waiting around and we'renot playing already absolute dreads, dregs
of society at the opposing quarterback position. That is the number one reason that
you can say, if you evenstrip everything else away, their schedule is
(25:49):
absolutely going to be tough for simplybased on the fact that if healthy the
quarterbacks they're playing this year, it'snight and day. And so to that
end the act the obvious part, what's the best way? We always talking
about Bill Belichick. Well, hisstrongest asset other than having Tom Brady on
his team, was that he tookthe best weapon from the opposing team away.
(26:11):
Okay, that's fine. The bestweapon for the opposing team ninety nine
point niner percent of the time istheir quarterback. If he's on the sideline,
he can't make plays to hurt you. Now, you still have to
make them. If you're CJ.Stroud, you've got to score and they're
going to be come after him.But your defense and the moves you've made
are designed to do just that, and if they do that job, then
(26:33):
it's going to somewhat alleviate the seriousuptick in the competition, because those quarterbacks
aren't hurting you if they're on thesidelines because they went three and out or
whatever. Yeah, hopefully you havemore of those, and hopefully you run
the ball and dominate the ball enoughhave long drives. Texans were more of
a big play team. The Texanswere also on the wrong side of a
lot of offensive three and outs orvery short drives. Those things need to
(26:56):
be a little bit more balanced. You'd like to have the ball four or
five minutes at a time. Youopen a game with a six to seven
minute drive and you're up seven tonothing before the other team sees the football.
You stop them after you defer, knowing you're gonna get the ball in
the second half, and then youget the ball after your defense is made
a stop and you put points onthe board, and you might be able
to double up at the end ofthe half and beginning of the second half.
(27:18):
A little bit on the quarterbacks they'llplay. They'll probably play three rookies
all in the first six weeks ofthe season. Minnesota, New England obviously
Chicago before both of those should seerookies in all those games. I would
assume Williams and McCarthy and may arestarting in those games. Won't see any
rookies. The rest of the yearunless things change dramatically for the teams they're
(27:41):
playing. And on top of that, over the final eleven games, I
would only say you face a belowaverage quarterback or a poor quarterback in only
two games, and it's the samequarterback. It's Will Levis the rest of
the season from October twentieth until Januaryfifth, no breaks. Well, it's
just you're playing a very competent team, if not also an extremely competent dangerous
(28:04):
If I just add the word dangerous, then now Anthony Richardson certainly fits a
quarterback. Again, the next worstquarterback after Levice is probably Trevor Lawrence.
And if it's not Lawrence, thenit's Richardson. The others are Aaron Rodgers,
Jordan Love, Dak Prescott, JaredGoff, Tua Mahomes, and the
(28:26):
MVP. Oh yeah, I forgotit wasn't Mahomes last year, even though
it was because he beat him.And I still think you're not giving off
credit to the Chiefs like you've talkedabout the margin of victory as if it
was not them squeaking by. Imean, I know they didn't thrash them
on the scoreboard, but I justnever and I remember that particular day,
(28:51):
in that particular game, I waslistening to the majority of it versus watching
it. So maybe I don't havethe correct perspective looking back at it,
but I do remember thinking, Inever feel like the Chiefs are gonna lose
this game, not even a little, not once. I never thought I
didn't think it before the game, and I certainly didn't think it once the
game got underway. No matter whatwas happening, it was like the Chiefs
(29:11):
were winning this game going to theSuper Bowl. I doubt very many people
that aren't Chiefs fans felt the sameway, but that's fair, and I
know the Chiefs fans definitely felt that. I mean, they turned them over.
That's essentially the whole reason they wonthe game. Lamar was not great,
but it's the three turnovers to zeroas to why you fell short.
It's the fact that, you know, the drives. Just I just said
(29:34):
this about the Texans, That's whatthe Chiefs did to the Ravens. Chiefs
had the ball for almost forty minutes. Their drives were play after play after
play after play, and they would, you know, either score at the
end of it, which they didn'tdo any times in the second half.
The Chiefs, like the Texans, scored zero points in the second half at
(29:56):
the Ravens in the playoffs. TheRavens did not reach this Super Bowl as
the number one seed in the AFCwhile giving up zero second half points.
But again their home field. Whatdid we talk about all season last year?
The Chiefs offense never really looked great. It was their defense. And
I don't want to say it cameout of nowhere, because you certainly you
can't have a defense that quote comesout of nowhere when Chris Jones is on
(30:18):
it. You just can't because ofhim. I can't say they lost their
best defensive player, but they losttheir second best defensive player to the Titans
and Lagarious Need. That's fine withme. That's clearly fine with them too.
They sent them away, Yeah, that's true. They just until they
don't somehow find a way though, because they always do. Yeah, that
part of it. I wouldn't evendebate with you. The chief Hey man,
(30:41):
the Chiefs are playing in the inthe AFC title game. Who do
you think is gonna win? Thereisn't a well who are they playing?
Well, what's the line? Well, who's healthy? They're like, yeah,
I think they're gonna win. They'rethe Chiefs. Yeah, because no
matter what, even when they're andthat's that game is a perfect example of
it, they weren't. They didn'tp particularly play their best. In fact,
(31:02):
I mean I don't remember, andagain I'm not having the schedule in
front of me from last season.I don't remember at any point last year
thinking, oh, man Mahomes islike now was he? Was? He
effective? Obviously, but we weren'tlike, oh my gosh, did you
see that. I don't remember havingthat reaction like maybe all of last year.
(31:25):
And again I could be leaving agame or two out, but it's
not like it was in prior seasonswhere it was like every other week I
was like this guy's unbelievable, what'she done this week? In fact,
we were talking more about what CJwas doing in that vein, but they
were winning. They want, youknow, got it done. And then
when the postseason, you know, when those lights are the brightest, I
guess like I just got done, saying they always figure out a way to
(31:47):
do it, regardless of what sideof the football you're talking about. Maybe
it was roster, because they clearlymade some changes. Maybe it was leaning
on a younger player that obviously wasin his first year in Rashi Rice.
But I guess other than his rookieseason where he wasn't on the field until
the very end of the season,I don't even think there's a debate to
(32:07):
be had by He had his worstregular season by an enormous margin, and
he wasn't even bad. He justwasn't unbelievable. Pat mahasks, that's kind
of what I'm saying. Twenty seventouchdowns and fourteen picks and a passer mean's
the all time solid year. Hehas the highest passer rating NFL history's sitting
at ninety two to six last year. Was over one hundred and four for
(32:30):
his career going into last year, and then he was pretty good in the
playoffs. He was very good againstthe Ravens. He only had nine incompletions
on thirty nine passes. But hehad led the league essentially in something basically
every year of his career touchdowns oryards or passer rating or QBR or yards
per game, he led all ofthem. He led the league in nothing.
(32:51):
Last year he was the reigning MVP. He'd finished in the top five
for MVP three times. Yeah, five years, you know what, And
it was not really a consideration atall for MVP. I would argue any
stipid and it's again, I'm nottrying to take away from Lamar, but
that absolutely fed into Lamar's campaign. If Mahomes is putting up usual numbers that
(33:15):
Mahomes does, it's absolutely a debate. It has to be, of course
it is, But he didn't.Lamar was the best player in the NFL
from an MVP standpoint, and thevoters all but one of them agreed.
Who is the guy again? Theperson who voted for Josh? Who voted
for Josh Allen? I couldn't tellyou off the top of my head.
They do reveal the votes though, right they do. Yikes, that's unfortunate.
(33:38):
That wasn't even see Josh Allen kindof had a similar season, I
thought to Mahomes. I mean,he wasn't horrible at all, but it
wasn't like, holy crap, they'rejust running it up like say, the
year prior. I know this becausehe was on my fantasy team. That's
the one read. Allen was twentynine and eighteen TDS interceptions. Mahomes was
(33:59):
twenty seven and fourteen, and thenAllen had fifteen more rushing touchdowns than Mahomes
zero. Well, yeah, andthat's obviously something that offsets that. But
when you're talking about those two guys, you if they're not flirting with a
four in front of their touchdown total, you're like, what happened? What's
wrong with them? Which is crazybecause that's just the bar they've made for
(34:19):
themselves. Everybody can't be dak.Come on, now, how many do
you have to leave the league?Yes, thirty six, that's flirting with
forty. Wow, I thought itwas more. No, I just love
how spectacular their flameout. I'm sorrytheir latest flame out was enjoyed. That
a great deal? All right. The eight Team continues here on Sports Talk
seven to ninety as we will wrapup the four o'clock hour. Coming up
(34:43):
next Adam Clinton had Adam weg Ford. The eight Team still got a bunch
to get to from what took placewith the Texans as they essentially ended their
off season program today with their mandatorymini camp and then making their way through
the remainder of the off season preparefor training camp and their four game preseason
Hall of Fame game against the Bearsand then their three remaining preseason games.
(35:07):
Not heard anything about them having anyjoint practices. I know they will not
have any joint practices with the Bears, who they play in Week two.
Will not have any joint practices withthe Steelers in week two of the preseason.
I don't anticipate they will have anyas they finish off the preseason,
but have not definitively been given thatword as they prepare for the regular season
(35:29):
off of division championship and one postseasonvictory last year, Year one for the
three most important figures that will ifever lead this team, if anybody's going
to do it, it would bethese three, all heading into their second
season, leading this team to somethinggreat, much greater than anything this franchise
has done. Will Anderson, CJ. Stroud, and Tomiko Ryans heard from
all of them over the last coupleof days following their two mini camp practices
(35:52):
mandatory mini camp, and again, most of the players that were not seen
on the field are those that arestill making their way back from some surgery,
some injury, or on some sortof rehab plan so they'd be prepared
for the onset of camp. Sawa couple of those guys today, Titus
Howard was out there not practicing.I mentioned Denico Autry, who has been
(36:15):
on the field a little bit,Laramie Tunsel, Kendrick Green were all out
there but not practicing. It's reallygreat to see. I had seen him
on site but had not seen himon the practice field before. Again,
not practicing yet, and I'm notsure what the timetable is on it,
but Dylan Horton was right there withthe defensive lineman throughout practice today, continuing
(36:35):
to hopefully come back to the NFLafter he was able to recently ring the
bell following treatment for stage four Hodgkinlymphoma. That was pretty cool to see
out there. Demiko had mentioned hispresence with the group a couple times during
this offseason and how much it meantto everybody. Tank Dell yesterday talked about
how much John Mechi meant to himthis offseason and that there are things they've
(36:59):
both had to I didn't get tosome of what Tank Dell had to say
yesterday. We will do some ofthat in the five o'clock hour. We
get to the best of what WillAnderson had to say at the top of
the five o'clock hour during Football atfive. Wanted to get to some of
what Demiko I had to say todaybecause it's something I've harped on since the
offseason ended. We just ran throughwhat was a fairly successful season, I
(37:22):
thought by their defensive line, andmaybe in the postseason game against the Ravens
didn't look very successful as the Ravenswere unstoppable running the football, but for
the most part, their starters andthe reserves who were on the field,
and the addition of Derek Barnett, that was a pretty good group. And
Barnett was re signed and Anderson willbe one of the edge rushers, but
(37:45):
essentially the rest of the group wasflipped over. No Collins, no Rankins,
no Grenard. Instead Autry Photoicasi tosettle obviously Daniel Hunter. A lot
more snaps are coming from people whoare not in Texans uniforms last year,
and it seemed at times kind ofintentional that Nick and Demiko set about doing
that this offseason, even though theyhad discussions with Sheldon Rankins and were probably
(38:08):
second in line in terms of whohe was going to sign with. He
ended up signing elsewhere for a littlebit more money with Cincinnati. They were
first in line with Daniel Hunter, and that's why he is here, to
the tune of nearly fifty million dollarsover two seasons. But I asked Demiko
specifically about that defensive line and whythis was kind of the preferred group,
(38:29):
why they went about putting together thegroup they put together at the defensive line.
So what do I look for aD line man? Why is it
made up the way it's made upfor me? Is I want as much
depth as possible on our defensive line, all right? And when you can
get guys like Deniko, Daniel Tamveteran guys who've played a lot of football,
(38:50):
right, and they've made a lotof plays. They know what it
looks like, and so it's easyfor those guys to come into our system
and transition very quickly, right especiallythere here during the offseason program. And
for having those guys around, Ithink has helped everyone because they understand now
our style of play, understand howwe see the d lin play and how
(39:10):
important it is not only to ourdefense but to our entire team. He
sounds like me talking about the offensiveline. Well, they haven't done that
with that group yet, and thatwould be nice building depth with players who've
competed. I had a follow upquestion right there to try to get to
more of the specifics of the skillsof the players you added, and his
(39:30):
answer to that was still more generalabout the guys that have got experience,
guys that have been productive, andsaid it in a way that guys that
have been productive in other systems,And in Denico Autry's case, he's played
for two different teams over the lastsix years, three years in Indy,
three years in Tennessee, and DanielHunter playing with a far less talented group
(39:51):
in Minnesota in a different system lastyear and the year before. With what
they changed defensively, he said, well, pass production in terms of rushing
the passer probably pretty good indicator ofwhat they're going to do here. And
that's I think why he wanted thoseparticular players, Audrey and Hunter specifically.
Hunter has thirty three sacks since twentytwenty. Audrey has thirty nine and a
(40:14):
half sacks thirty six sacks excuse mesince twenty twenty. I don't think either
one of them is gonna lead theteam in sacks this year because I think
Will or will Anderson still may dothat with that right number. I keep
going with this super low end ofthirty for the Trio because I think Autry's
kind of stuck in a He maystill help the team a ton at non
(40:36):
edge snaps where he's not likely toget a sack. He still might get
into the backfield. He still mighthave five six sacks from a tackle spot,
but I don't know that that's goingto result in a double figure sax
season, which he had last yearin Tennessee, the first for him in
his career. But he's been superconsistent. Like calling last year's best year
is probably true, but I don'twant it to make it sound like the
(40:57):
years that preceded it weren't good. They were really really good in all of
the six years he's played inside thisdivision consecutively. This year will be number
seven. But the leader on thisteam in sacks should probably have about thirteen
sacks if healthy. You know, forty sacks for this trio I think is
very attainable between them if they're healthy. A thirteen sacks season, you're gonna
(41:20):
need that across the board if you'regetting to forty, because thirteen for all
three still leaves you short. Butyou lead the league with seventeen and a
half sacks. Nineteen and a halfsacks, maybe you get to twenty.
Can't one of these three? Really, one of these two the edge guys,
they could be among the league leadersin sacks very very easily. Why
is it when you say the numberthirteen, I just think, gosh,
(41:42):
that sounds low. And I meanyou said you just got done saying you
feel like it's low, but itseems ridiculously low. And then but you
kind of put that against what youwere just talking about. I mean,
you can only get so many sacks. You got to spread the wealth.
The AFE had seven players last yearwith seven or more sacks. John Garnard
(42:05):
was next with twelve and a half. Is that down from average? Would
you say? Well, that justsounds so inemate sadly, I can look
at the previous year and other seventeengame seasons, but then when we get
into the sixteen game seasons, true, it's gonna change it a little bit.
The year prior there were four AFCplayers with thirteen or more sacks,
and that was the first year ofthe seventeen game schedule, correct twenty twenty
(42:29):
one, the color year that wasthe first year of the seventh everybody remember
that, No wonder I didn't rememberbecause I had blacked that out of my
existence. The season before the twentytwenty one first seventeen game season, there
were three AFC players. Oh sothings are better. Actually, I'm completely
off. I blamed that three yearstretch. The year before that, there
(42:49):
was one. Wow, what's goingon? I mean, that's just the
AFC, that's not the NFL.And what was that? Who was that?
Aaron donald T? But AFC ohAFC. I'm I'm sorry. Wow,
that's surprising to me. And I'mwondering if that's a health has almost
always a lot to do with that. You know, if you're out there
for fourteen games instead of sixteen,or fifteen instead of seventeen, that can
(43:13):
pretty significantly impact a stat where you'reall averaging one a game. I guess
when I think about it, andagain, sack, the sack number total
doesn't necessarily you know, dictate ohit's a good defense or not. But
I guess now that I think backto some of those seasons, some of
the better defenses probably were in theNFC. Yeah, and the thing about
saying the texts instead a record formost sacks in a season. They had
(43:37):
fewer sacks per game last year thana previous season. Because they played a
seventeenth game, they set the recordwith forty six. The previous record was
forty five, which was earned ina sixteen game season. So it's not
apples to apples, And in anNFL season, when you add a game
to a sixteen game season, that'sa significant enough percentage of additional snaps,
(43:58):
et cetera that it does make adifferent. So all these comparisons are going
to be a little different. Youknow, these quarterbacks whose numbers were already
out of whack because the style ofplay in the NFL had changed. Now
they're all getting an extra game, like throwing for five thousand yards, maybe
because it's not quite as like threeor four years ago, throwing for a
bunch of yards was common. It'sactually it seemed like it became less common
(44:19):
last year. But throwing for fivethousand yards in sixteen games is different than
throwing for five thousand yards in seventeengames. Beyond the obvious, it's it's
a big difference, and how muchmore of an opportunity you have? All
right, let's take a quick timeout right here. We will get back
up and started on things in thefive o'clock hour with more football conversation.
(44:39):
But we need to tell you, guys right now about QC kinetics. We
need to tell you about the factthat joint pain sucks. You don't want
to deal with it for a littlewhile or for a long while. That's
always like, you know, crazyto me year about this, And I
guess maybe I'm stereotyping, but alot of guys do this because they don't
like to go to the doctor andthey're just like, ah, throw some
(44:59):
dirt out on it. It's it'sjust a knee, it's your joint.
Man. Just because I, youknow, smashed a bite baseball, if
my shin doesn't mean I have tocome out of the baseball game. Put
me on the ten day il.Just because I'm about to be on crutches
for two or three days doesn't meanI have to come out of the baseball
game. Fortunately, that's not ajoint though, that's a shin. That's
true. Fortunately, Fortunately, wellnot fortunately because it's going to keep them
(45:22):
out. But for us, forme, for WEX, for any of
you listening, if you've got jointpain of any kind for however long or
short amount of time you've been dealingwith it. Don't do the surgery route
or the downtime or the drugs thatcome with it. Instead, go with
QC Kinetics and what they have tooffer. They have regenerative medicine to offer.
They're the nation's leader in regenerative medicine. That means they're offering you lasting
(45:44):
joint pain relief without the need forsurgery, for downtime, for drugs for
your aching knees, shoulders back hipsseven one three nine to one three fifty

Two lifelong Houston sports guys named AdamTalking Your Teams series Adam Clinton and Adam
(46:30):
Wexler are the a team a serighted pussal footballs five o'clock some five o'clock
football. Professional football in America isa special game five o'clock hour here on
(46:57):
Sports Talk seven to ninety as allalways on a Wednesday. That means we
talked football because Chandler was with usyesterday. I don't want to talk to
Chandler today, and it's not havinganything to do with Chandler. More on
the Texans. And this is kindof the fun stuff we got today and
it's pretty much standard. Didn't knowthis at the time, and then we
interviewed Will Anderson when he was inthe running and ultimately won the Lombardi Award,
(47:22):
and then he became a Texan andit was reinforced, and it has
been reinforced every time, either athis locker at an event, or at
the podium or postgame podium. He'sjust tremendous. He's extremely engaging, very
I think focused on what you're asking, and he's more than willing to deliver
(47:44):
an answer. He genuinely enjoys theback and forth. He certainly gives every
evidence that that is true, whichis pretty abnormal. And I don't think
there's you know, he's just there'sa lot of players who are very good.
He's the anti clowney and he hasinteresting things to say, but it's
mainly in the way that he saysit. I mean, I can't think
like C. J. Stroud givessuper informative, thoughtful, usually very long
(48:07):
detailed answers, and only occasionally willhe smile about it and make himself laugh.
And again it's not bad or good, but Anderson can't even stop himself.
I can't remember an interview we didwith him other than immediately after a
loss where he wasn't in a goodmood and he wasn't smiling about some story
he was able to recount that reallydrives home the point he wanted to make
(48:30):
while answering a question, while givingyou some background on something you were curious
about. So that will be whatI give you the best of Will Anderson.
Last among these trio of sound bites, Will Anderson today after their two
day mini camp, after being onthe field with the group that he's going
to be going out there with, and I mentioned that we were able to
see a lot of the work thatthey put in today and that they worked
(48:50):
out in front of us, andthat is not normally the case, but
what it gave us the opportunity tosee a little bit more than in some
other practices. Truthfully, if you'vebeen to the practice this facility, they
have three fields. Media usually setsup in between the first two fields closest
to NRG Stadium. The third fieldis the furthest away, and that's usually
where the rehabbing players kicker, punter, holder, snapper excuse me, will
(49:15):
be working out, and then maybesome portion of a group has some small
portion of practice to work out on. Almost the entire rest of the team
is in viewing distance. We're inbetween the two practice fields they use,
so some are to our left, some are to our right. The defensive
line and their sleds and some ofthe other equipment they use is as far
(49:37):
away from us as possible. Withas many things in between us and them
as possible, getting video is nearlyimpossible, and obviously watching what they do
it just doesn't happen. But whenthey get to eleven on eleven we see
a little bit of it. Wesee some of their interactions. One of
the advantages of going to practice versusjust being able to see what everybody else
who goes to practice puts out orother aggregators are able to who give to
(50:00):
you is. You can see alot of the non actual play interactions.
I can see Stefan Diggs talking toJohn Mechi on the sidelines after their group
of eleven on elevens or seven onsevens have wrapped up. I can see
Nico Collins talking with Tank Dell.I can see CJ talking to Diggs and
Nico and Tank after a particular playerafter they've had a word with Jerra Johnson
(50:20):
or Coach Slowock. And I cansee how much talking Daniel Hunter and Will
Anderson Junior are doing. I cansee how often the two of them are
standing right next to each other asthey go through drills, as they go
from a station to station, asthey work together on different things. So
we saw a ton of that today, and that led into one of the
questions I had for Will, becauseit seems so apparent. It appears the
(50:43):
relationship between you and Daniel, despitethe fact you've had a couple of weeks
on the field together a very shortamount of time, sometime in the locker
room, sometime in the meeting room. Sure, but it appears your relationship
is fairly advanced. And you guysreally are pretty close pretty quickly, I
asked him, is that accurate? And how did it get there? He's
very approachable and he's not the typelike he knows a lot. He doesn't
(51:06):
want to keep it to hum Solf. He always pulls me to the side
like, hey, like this iswhat I've seen. You can do this,
you can do that, this,he can do this, this,
he can do this drill like nowwe have this thing in the beginning of
the practice, or we're just workin our hands, getting our hand movements
fast and everything like that, butalso just getting to learn each other.
Like while we do this, whatdo we love to do outside of this?
And you know we meet at thequarterback and then we holding each other
around the neck running down the fieldlike it's been fun so far man,
(51:29):
and I can't wait. If yourecall earlier this week, I mentioned that
one of the maybe the first playof a mini camp that we saw this
week in eleven on eleven's they metat the quarterback they both beat their respective
reserve tackles because both Titus and Laramiearen't practicing, and they did. They
met at CJ. Stroud, whowasn't going to get hit, did step
(51:50):
up in the pocket and did continuethe play, which is what happens to
practice when you're only seeing your ownteam. But they both would have been
probably yelling at each other. That'smy sack, that's my That has happened
already, just in a practice setting. Very good to see and we heard
from Hunter earlier on the show, teams are essentially going to have to decide
where are we committing to stopping, who are we allowing to only be chipped?
(52:13):
And you know what they are goingto be the consequences from it.
If these two players, I thinkboth can be on their way. I
think Daneil Hunters had some very goodseasons. I think his best season could
be next year. I think WillAnderson's best season will almost assuredly be next
year. He only has two toone to compare it to. Also from
Will Anderson, he is now notthe rookie or a rookie defensively, and
there might be a rookie starter forthe Texans this year, and based on
(52:36):
what we're seeing and how he's beingused early in camp, Kamari Lassiter is
that player. The first player theyselected, a player who could easily fit
in on a five dB. TypicalNFL defense four two five is essentially what
you're going to be running out there, because you're going to have five dbs
on the field on first down aton throughout most of your seventy snap day
(52:58):
as a defense, the heavy majorityof them will likely be with five defensive
backs on the field, and certainlylooks like he is capably showing that he
will be one of them. Matchedup against Stefan Diggs quite a few times
today again and not necessarily he gotthe better of Stefan, but the play
was a defensive win play as hewas able to knock the ball down on
one prevent a catch on the other, ball was probably under thrown a bit
(53:20):
from CJ on a deep ball.So a lot of factors but all showing
him out to play. Well. That's what it looked like to us in
the media, and I think veryclearly it was looking the very same way
to Will Anderson and the coaching staff. I've been so amazed by him,
man. He's been making plays leftand right all over the field. He
got the swarm player of the day. He's electric man. Another young guy
(53:44):
that we can't wait to keep seeinggrow and stuff like that, and I
think he can do great things forthis defense and be a part of something
specially that we have going on here. And you know, it's just that
mentality that you have coming from theSEC. So he gets it. He
knows like now is the time,Like he don't have to wait for nobody.
He not scared to jump up infront of the line. He's not
scared to go make plays like that'sthe type of that's the type of mentality
(54:05):
that he has coming from a placelike that. But that's just who he
is and he understands what we're tryingto do here. Turnover chain Swarm Player
of the Day, NFL player atpractice, the Swarm player of the day.
It sounded like he was talking aboutc J. Stroud. You know
that's again he didn't. He wasasked specifically about the player, so he
doesn't need to re announce it inthe in the answer, we could now
(54:28):
use that for you could who thatsounds like any SoundBite about something CJ did
after any game in twenty twenty three, Well, I agree with you.
Will What do you think about stingsame thing? Yeah, SEC player,
Well, always going out there makingplays, and you know he absolutely had
a comeback season, if you will, But yeah, he came back from
playing in Love's defense. You youare meaner to Lovey Smith than I am
(54:55):
to David Cully, And that's hardto do. I'll tell you why,
because it's Cully. It's not evenworth my time, right, not capable
qualified all that. Lovey is agood football mind and a good football coach
of the game. Do you thinkhas chosen to employ a ridiculously outdated,
(55:16):
unsuccessful defense. Do you think Loveyis is suited? I did not think
we would be going down this path, but since we're here, we still
got the Will Anderson quote of theday. Yeah, and I will make
sure we have time for that. But just as an aside, since his
name came up, do you thinkLovey would be a good maybe not the
(55:37):
main guy, but a good personnelguy. Given what you just get done
saying about it's it almost you kindof stopped short of saying, well,
the game's passed him by, butthe scheme is not conducive to winning on
that side of the football in today'sNFL. Well, the first thing about
that, since you brought up personnellike he's the head coach, as you
(55:59):
roll into the first round of thedraft, and you've got the number three
pick to give to Lovey, soto speak, and you give him what
you believe is the best man deaman corner, shut down, this side
of the fields, closed, allthat stuff. You give him. Derek
Stingley Junior well playing in Lovey's defense, Why what difference does it make?
You could play your fifth corner backthere and you get the same results.
(56:19):
So Sauce Gardner would not have hadNo, he would not have. You're
not asking him to do the thingshe's good at. You're not asking him
to do the things that help yourdefense. That's again why I pick at
that so often. I don't knowabout what you saying that he'd be.
But if you're saying that, andthat's fine, I didn't really particularly think
he would be. But if you'resaying that, then wouldn't you have to
argue that if Derek Stingley Junior hadgone to New York, he would have
(56:45):
been the rookie at the defensive rookieof the year, A healthy Derek Stingley
Junior. Maybe yes, I meanespecially just that means Sauces in Houston playing
in that terrible scheme. Yeah,I mean, I think this is a
fair thing to say. Maybe peoplein New York or elsewhere in the NFL
would disagree. They're both going intoyear three. Each of them has had
one season better than the other.First year, Sauce was one of the
(57:07):
six or seven best dB or cornersof football. While I agree with last
year Stingley was better. While Iagree with that, I don't think you
would find as many people that wouldsay that about last season. In other
words, they would say ol Stingleywas buying by far better than Sauce because
it's a reputation thing. It's lazy. Well, in a lot of ways,
we also were first. Nobody waslooking at Stingley last year, and
(57:30):
the year began, he missed halfthe season, played for a joke of
a team. Sauce was the defensiverookie of the year, was phenomenal and
deserved all the accolades he got.I mean to say he had a bad
season, because he didn't. ButI think Stingley's second season was just simply
better. So to that Will Anderson. They have a new quarterback on the
defense from the Tennessee Titans. Fromthe San Francisco forty nine ers specifically chosen
(57:55):
to return to Demico Ryan's led defense, where he once was when the tour
together in San Francisco. Aziz alSchai here is that guy, and he
he is going to mean more, probably to this team than any other player
they brought in for not obvious reasons, for not necessarily statistically based reasons.
But he's gonna run that defense. He's gonna put guys where they need to
(58:16):
be, and he's going to pushguys the way they need to. Was
asked a question about what he's alreadyseeing from Azaz and Will Anderson talked about
how much how important he will beto them, but he did it in
a super awesome Will Anderson type oflet me tell you a story kind of
way. I jumped offside and likeI got mad at myself and he was
(58:38):
like stop outing, and he kindof like hold on, like who are
you talking to? Like, andit changed my Like I respected that because
I was like, bro, likeokay, like I respect that because as
a man and as a player,Bro, that's we all need that,
you know what I'm saying. AndI look at him totally like I looked
at him different, but I reallylook at him totally different now, because
(58:59):
that's the type of like mentality thatwe have to have. But we're going
to go far in this league, and if we're going to win a lot
of games, somebody that's not scaredto get on people when they do the
wrong thing. So it was achallenge for us, and I accepted it.
He had initially begun that story goesfunny story, I you know,
I had never been He's basically saying, I'd never been treated by a teammate
this way. I'd never been toldthis by a linebacker, by anybody out
(59:21):
there. And then he got intothe part we just heard, which is
why after he heard from alscha earstop bleeping pouting, he basically jumped back.
He think, who is this guy? What is he? And he
realized I love this guy. Youknow what's funny about that whole scenario,
though, that probably either happens orsomeone attempts to make that happen in fifty
(59:44):
percent of the other locker rooms orpractice fields in the NFL, and it
doesn't go over nearly as well fora variety of reasons, but not the
least of which is the culture that'sbeen created. And I know It sounds
cliche. I know it does, but I can't not talk about it when
given the you know, when you'rewhen you're juxtaposing it against just one year
(01:00:05):
prior, and then especially the yearprior to that, and just the fact
that Demiko Ryans while CJ is themain reason that they had the bounce back
here that they did it, youjust can't. I mean, you could
give him an extension today and I'dhave zero problem with it. He's that
important to just how people look atthis team. I know CJ is the
(01:00:29):
reason that they're on national television fivesix times this year or whatever, but
like that doesn't get to that pointwithout Demiko Legit transforming how people look at
this organization, and they did likehe did. I just it could not
have gone better for him his rookieyear as a head coach. And yet
(01:00:49):
I'm like, that's if that's thelow end, that's the bottom of the
barrel. It just gets me excitedabout what could what could be this marriage
between him and CJ. Stroud andof course everybody else that's involved in this
ride doesn't play quarterback, but Iactually think Will Anderson Junior means as much
to the future as this franchise. As CJ the person and all the things
you just mentioned, he can't doit all because he doesn't throw the football
(01:01:12):
and guide the offense. In hisyears a leader, I think he was
at least his equal. Clearly hewas much more than that as a football
player, And yeah, I doI think as a leader and a culture
setter he was bad. I don'tthink he is as good at that,
as genuine as that as Will is. No, I agree, Plus Will
(01:01:37):
is coming into a much much youngerroster. JJ had veterans all over the
place, even though they were alsoadding or infusing young talent. There was
vets all over that defense. Incase you missed it, as next and
so, in case you missed it, and if you weren't at practice or
listening into the stream earlier of theTexans, you did miss what Hunter said
about what I think this very topicis all about regards his new teammate edge
(01:02:00):
rushing duo Will Anderson Junior. Sowe will hear that next. Well,
you won't miss anything on Infinity's tenG Wi Fi network. Walldwall Wi Fi
from Exfinity from the ten G networkis the only way to go to ensure
that you've got fast speeds throughout yourhome, a reliable connection in every single
room, and power for all yourdevices. And that includes even when everyone
(01:02:25):
is online. It doesn't matter whatthe device is. If it's using the
Wi Fi, you want to makesure that there's not any lag for you
and what you're trying to do,and vice versa. Everybody can share it
and everybody will be able to shareit with a reliable connection thanks to the
waald Wall Wi Fi from Exfinity nowfor June twenty first, because that is
(01:02:45):
when customers, specifically astros fans forexample, can get started with gigspeed Internet
for just twenty five dollars a monthand that's for two years with no annual
contract and free Wi Fi equipment includedwhen you add unlimited mobile. Go to
Infinity dot com and ask him aboutthis offer. You can call them at
one eight hundred Infinity or just walkinto one of their stores across the entire
(01:03:08):
Houston area today. Visit a storein person and ask one of their helpful
associates in there. Infinity proud sponsorof your Houston Astros. Hey, it's
Craig Ackerman. The rockets are certainlypopping the public back to the eighteen with
Adam Wesler and the Twitter troll AdamClinton. Help me do it with somebody
(01:03:32):
I'm not. I don't try ithere. I don't look for fights.
Why I get irritated. Adam andAdam are on Sports Talk seven ninety set
you with in case you missed it, here some items we maybe got to
(01:03:52):
earlier in the show, and wehad a little bit shorter of a program
with the early Astros game. Ihope you didn't miss it, even though
it's awful news that both hose ARikhidi and Christian Xavier are set for their
seasons to end due to surgery.Got that news officially this morning. And
there's a few other items we've notyet gotten to which we need to hear.
But I mentioned there was one thingin particular from our last conversation to
(01:04:15):
end last segment about leadership and maybematurity that ties into it. Will Anderson
was a rookie last year. Heknew nothing about being an NFL player through
first hand experience because he hadn't beenone before. Heads into his second season,
where he already was a clear leaderwith a bunch of veterans around him,
who's the youngest player out there. He was the youngest player in his
group, and he's nearly the samethis year, but with one year of
(01:04:40):
experience. He's now been on thefield on the practice field for a handful
of days with voluntary and mandatory minicamps with Daniel Hunter, who spent quite
a bit of time in the NFL. Now and what Hunter said about Anderson,
I think lends to what I wassaying about Anderson and the kind of
maturity that you don't normally see froma player with that kind of experience.
(01:05:01):
I'm very impressed by my will technicallystill a rookie, but it doesn't seem
like he's a rookie. I mean, it feels like he's like in year
four or five or six whit players. He carries himself, you know,
you don't see that much like peopleand players that are just year one going
into year two. So that's verybig coming from him. Why is he
(01:05:24):
technically still a rookie because he hasn'tpracticed at training camp twenty twenty four.
That's usually once you've played your lastgame of the prior season, your rookie
year, you're not a rookie. There's two different groups of people that look
at it. The rookie who agreeswith you, yes, and the veterans
who don't. Well, that's thething, like is he making him carry
around bags and gear and all thatkind of stuff? Still, it kind
(01:05:45):
of depends who else has joined yourposition group. So no one has,
then you're still you know, likewho Okay, So when training camp gets
there, who takes over? Well, I don't think he he's going to
make Will Anderson carry his pads, truthfully, but their defensive line group was
pretty much saved at the end ofthe draft. They picked two defensive linemen
(01:06:11):
in the seventh round. Will Andersonwon't be carrying anybody's pads, Solomon Byrd
and Marcus Harris, and probably FildariusPayne, who was an undrafted free agent
who actually probably has a better chanceto make the team than either of those
other two players I mentioned. Theywill be helmet carriers and other donut bringers
to practice or to the facility firstthing in the morning, things like that.
(01:06:32):
Are they allowed to bring donuts?Isn't that against course? That's more
of an offensive line type situation,is it not? Since we brought him
up earlier, how many thousands oftimes has JJ Watt told eating donuts at
the facility stories, And he's stilltelling them now because Bill Cower brings donuts
to the CBS crew every week.Let me tell you something, there are
(01:06:56):
a few things in life as faras just bad for you, guilt,
he pleasure, foods that I willthat I'll put above that, especially warm
from a place that rhymes with notour show, not our gimmick. It
is our gimmick. A local Houstondonut shop. It's fine. There's lots
(01:07:17):
of them, though, I thinkeveryone knows that, but there's only one
that's on the way to everywhere exactly. There's no shout out at the end,
shout out to dub yeah, bythe way people do. And that's
one of those things like people thatsay Kroger's, I hate you. What
about people that say water Burger,I hate you too? What else do
we have? All Right? Sothe buddy cop drama or I guess sitcom
(01:07:40):
in this case the cop drama. What's at the top of the list for
you sorry to cut you off?Is it tangle in cash? Is it
turner and hoots? Is it lethalweapon? Well, maybeles, we can
have a new duo of Micah Parsonsand c J. Stroud. That sounds
terrible. We've heard c J.Stroud check Michaeh. Parsons on whether he's
a killer or not. We've heardhim about Micah Parsons and what he could
(01:08:00):
do if he played in the NBA. Well, how about now before the
two were about to throw out thefirst pitch, I believe at a game
in Tokyo this offseason where Micah Parsonswas asked how well could he do at
hitting a baseball in Major League Baseball? And c J. Stroud of course
right there to try to check himabout two hundred. The pictures are not
good. You might get one sixtytwo day education. Two. Hold on,
(01:08:28):
let me do the percentages, becauseI think I could. I meant
like, I can go about twohundreds, like average two hundred. You
t'ging an average two hundred? Likein the season, like I really give
you an astro Jersey year that wasa bad year for him? No,
but no, what's his average? No? What was his average? Though?
See that's what I'm saying. Ithink I could be about one of
the eighty or two hundred the losionas finest Lady the losion or it's finals
(01:08:48):
per season at eight hundred best Ithink a hundred, maybe twenty, probably
like ten Lucky Famember. He's he'snot good at anything besides throwing the ball.
Noism, not bolling. Yeah,we can do what you want to
do the bit, we could doit. They definitely would be awesome in
(01:09:09):
a post NFL career buddy cop movie. Let's see how their relationship develops as
they play one another for the firsttime and again when this is an offensive
player and a defensive player. WhenI say the play they play against each
other. Micah Parsons will be trying. He'll be on the field when CJ's
on the field. It's not aBrady versus Manning thing. It's not.
This is something that really will unfoldand be fun to watch. Stefan Diggs
(01:09:30):
yesterday, He'll be if Trayvon isalso healthy at that time, and he
should be. They'll be literally playingagainst each other on the field at the
same time. But to the specificsof that, give me a one or
two, Dan, which do youwant to hear first? As I make
the comparison to crossing over into baseballfrom other sports stars, you want one
(01:09:50):
first or two. Let's go one. One is Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow
had the twenty seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen season flirting with a professional baseball
career at each of the three levelsof the minor leagues. His batting average
when he was done with his ninehundred and forty minor league at bats he
(01:10:15):
hit two twenty three in nine hundredand forty minor league at bats. Do
you think Michah Parsons could hit twotwenty three? I don't even know what
his baseball history is. Let's sayit's nonexistent. Oh well, then no
shot, No, all right,Now here's number two. This player graduated
from North Carolina after winning a nationalchampionship, and then he played for the
(01:10:40):
Bulls and the Wizards. Birmingham Baronsbaseball player in nineteen ninety four James Jordan's
son, Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Infour hundred and thirty six Minor League at
bats for the Barons, Michael Jordanhit a very dream worthy Micah Parsons esque
two two. Well, I meanit was so much that they had billboards
(01:11:01):
up in Birmingham of what his battingaverage was. And of note, this
is minor League baseball. We're talkingabout Micah was talking about the big leagues,
right, the majors, the topof the heap, the cream of
the crop. Is the only wayhe's going to hit two hundred is if
he got a miracle hit and quitbefore his sixth at bat when his average
(01:11:26):
would fall below two hundred. JoseBray, you should do that after his
next hit, Just quit because it'sgoing to go much much further down from
there the next several at bats.Yeah, those two have spent a tremendous
amount of time with microphones around thisoffseason, and it's been awesome. It's
been really good. They're they're they'reat each other because it's Texans Cowboys.
(01:11:48):
You heard CJ at him, becauseit's Penn State, Ohio State. It's
phenomenal. When that week is uponus, all of this is getting revisiteds
so much. Yeah, Stefan wasactually asked about that matchup with the Cowboys
and his brother later and he basicallysaid that that's so far down the road.
When we get there, it willbe awesome, but we're not really
(01:12:11):
thinking about that yet. His brotherwill line up against him, basically,
Yeah, he should, that's justdepending on how many. Maybe if the
Texans, depending on the personnel theTexans have on the field, it certainly
should happen. He'll be on hisside of the field quite a bit.
They'll be throwing passes where it's onlygoing to be caught by digs or digs
or nobody passed the digs and digsintercepts it. No, hopefully that's not
(01:12:35):
the case. All right. Wegot about a half hour to go here
on a Wednesday edition of The EightTeam, following an Astro's loss in the
finale of their three game set tothe Cardinals. They did take the series,
but not a well actually, Iwas gonna say, it's not a
happy flight. But technically if they'renot getting on the plane that day,
but aren't they, I don't know, they normally fall, that's right.
(01:12:57):
They take the day off. Theydo that in the city, that's right.
Okay, Well, I mean, you wouldn't you want a day off
in the city of Angels No,because they're going to Anaheim. Yeah,
Los Angeles, That's what I said. You don't want to have a day
off in the city of Disney. All right. My wife keeps trying to
make us go back there again. It ain't happening, you know what,
Why not? I don't want togo back to Disney. I did that
(01:13:19):
once. That's enough, all right, be mean to the families. Your
move. He'll they'll be fine.My family they're gonna be fine. Your
family's not gonna be fine. Though. If you're about to go on vacation
and you start packing contact lenses andglasses, why are you doing that?
Dad? Do you think less ofus? Well? Yes, you probably
(01:13:40):
will make your kids think that youthink less of them if you don't get

a little money as it pertains tothe NFL. And we've kind of actually
discussed this topic earlier this week already. But I until I saw the list,
I could not believe that this wasthe case. What do you think
(01:17:27):
is the highest valued franchise in theNFL? The Cowboys correct nine point two
billion is what Jerry would supposedly getif you decided, Hey, yeah,
I'm tired valued it? Right? You might get more. Oh he would,
he would, he absolutely would.Okay, they're number one, nine
(01:17:49):
two. Who do you think hasspent the most money this offseason on personnel?
I know the Texans are not numberone, but they are. I
think they're in the top three. They are not top five. They are
not what number of the Texans.I don't actually know that right this second,
(01:18:12):
but it's pulling up. I justknow they're out of the top five.
The Texans are one, two, three, four, five, six,
seven eight. I'm gonna look atanother list to verify that, but
I don't know who's number one.The Detroit Lions are actually the top spenders
with a cool six hundred and twentysix million. Oh well, then I
(01:18:34):
either I didn't understand the question orjust wasn't clear. It's the it's that's
the highest spending NFL team this offseason. That's the figure. Okay, now
I understand. There you go.I guess I didn't phrase it. Probably,
Well, that's like when they saythe Dodgers spent a billion dollars this
offseason. Well, I was, unfortunately thinking of what they were spending for
(01:18:58):
this season. Okay, but whenyou put that figure out there and then
you after I've told you that theCowboys are worth nine point two billion with
a B and you find out thatthey are, where do you think they
are on the list. Let's justget your guess. I mean, long
term contracts are where you get thefigure the Lions have because both Penney Sewell
and Amon ross A Brown got themthe Texans big money deals or short term
(01:19:25):
so that's why you don't have them, now I understand on that list,
Yeah, we know, the Cowboysdid almost nothing very good. There's not
long term deals. Their highest paidplayers literally got zero dollars this off season.
They're still waiting. One of themis holding out because of it,
and cost them about one hundred andone thousand dollars to do it. Boy,
that's some good money for if there'sthree days of mini camp that he
(01:19:45):
misses, I take I guess they'reeight, twenty ninth or thirty dead last.
They're dead last at ninety three million. That's why I brought up to
six twenty six. That's the gapfrom first to last, six and twenty
six million to a paltree ninety three. I mean, he's running this like
(01:20:06):
well, I don't even know what'sthe comparison. Well, that's it's I
know, I know there's money onthe way. I do know. It's
not even that there's money on theway. Matter of fact, there the
Lions are now where the Cowboys werebefore. They won twelve games. Twelve
games, twelve games. They spenttheir money on Dak, all right,
except for they've already won more playoffgames. Granted, I'm cumulative. Big
(01:20:30):
huge money deals have a lot ofthem, just not to CD then,
and Dak has been given a bigmoney deal. He's just now trying to
get a second one. Don't youfeel like though, given out, CD's
gonna get a deal this offseason.I think everyone's getting one, and he's
better than all of them. Butit doesn't have anything to do with what
you said, because you're one hundredpercent right. It has to do with
(01:20:50):
the Cowboys. Are people eligible?I should say cow It definitely appears it's
just a Cowboys thing. It's nota CD thing. It's where they are
and where they're going. So isthis hear over again, but with a
different position and a different outcome. They paid Zeke and we all thought maybe
they should have not done that.Well, that's because he's a running back.
But again, this is more teamstatus related. Where are we as
(01:21:14):
a team? Does it make sensefor us to commit to him when we
don't know who's throwing in the footballor how good we're going to be,
or we have just hired a newhead coach, even though I doubt Jerry
forecasts any eight win seasons in hisfuture. But if day, if Dak's
not the quarterback in twenty twenty five, tell me who is and why they're
better and they're more of a contender? Yeah, right, like, because
(01:21:35):
here's the thing, and he's notgoing to be the quarterback in twenty twenty
five, by the way, No, I don't agree. I don't think
he is either, and nor doI think Mike McCarthy's going to be coaching
whoever the quarterback is. So whycommit the dollars to CD Lamb even though
his play warrants it, Because whoeveris the quarterback needs to even have a
remote chance at trying to be moresuccessful, And if you don't have CD
(01:21:58):
Lamb, well that makes it hard. CJ. Stroud's first season in Houston
did not have a CD Lamb paidplayer, but they had a Ceedee Lamb
type production guy because and you knewthat because what because he had almost eight
hundred yards in his career over twoseasons, like Nico Collins being your number
(01:22:18):
one CED LAMB quality receiver did happenin twenty twenty three. Yeah, forecasting
that to happen would have been silly, right, No, for sure,
But it's also why he got themoney he did this offseason. So I
mean, that's the flip side ofit. But if you're basing your what
should he get on what he hasdone, I would probably even though he's
played in the league one more yearand he has the option year since he
(01:22:40):
was a first round pick. Thedeal that Jalen Waddle got three years of
Miami, three productive years in Miami, and he got a huge deal,
a lot more than Nico got, same draft class. And again CD's in
a different draft class, but he'salso the clear number one whereas Wattle's number
two. Yeah, but I thinkthe quality of plays is very comparable he's
been and honestly, he's gotten betterevery year as defenses have focused on him
(01:23:03):
more every year, he's continued tobe more productive. Again, there's not
a debate does he deserve it ornot? Is he on par with these
other guys that are getting paid,I mean DeVante Smith or him, him
or Michael Pittman, and he deservesmore money than both of them in my
opinion. And I realize the Cowboysaren't willing to part with it. It
looks like yet right. And Irealize that all of the trash talk that's
(01:23:26):
been going on, for example betweenCJ. Stroud and Michael Parsons this offseason
will in large part factor into whatI'm about to say. You just brought
it up. They've gone twelve andfive, twelve and five and twelve and
five just to just to be lateralor stam pat at your level of success,
(01:23:47):
you have to do that. Thisyear they are set up to have
a colossal letdown. Colossal. Theyhave all the makings of a team that
will do that. And I knowI'm reading all these articles about how they're
loaded with talent. They were loadedwith this talent the last three years and
they were twelve and five and whatdid they get them? Now you have
another year under your belt where you'renot succeeding, there's even more doubts than
(01:24:09):
they're worth a year before. Whenthere's doubts going into that year, and
the year before that and the yearbefore that if Dak's not the guy,
or just let's say, like, what's their schedule coming out of the gates
first five games. I don't evenhave it in front of me, but
let's just say they go three andtwo. Even you're already gonna hear,
ah, man, he didn't haveit. He can't get it done.
(01:24:30):
He's not the guy. And whenthat happens, it's going to be I
honestly think it's going to be acomplete in some ways, a complete rebuild.
It could be anyways, which iscrazy to say about this team that
has all his talent. They're settingit up for exactly that by not committing
to any of these players. Yep, it's almost like it's already approach and
then we're blowing it up. Oran I'm gonna say, other team,
(01:24:54):
they could come out with wins overDeshaun Watson, Derek Carr, Lamar Jackson,
Daniel Jones, and Russell Wilson.Name those quarterbacks again, Deshaun Watson,
Derek Carr, Lamar Jackson, DanielJones, and Russell Wilson. Those
are the wins. You're definitely takinggames. Oh, those are the first
five, I got you. Yeah, Well, they're definitely being Derek Carr
(01:25:16):
because he sucks. They're definitely beingDaniel Jones because he sucks. And he
doesn't have Sakuon Barkley. He doeshave a former Texan, but it's not
the same. Who are the otherthree? Deshaun and they closed that five
game stretch with Russell or justin Youknow, as much as I hate to
say it, because it would meanthat Deshaun's won his first game in Cleveland
(01:25:40):
and everything. If they win thatfirst game, is it in Dallas?
It's not even the first game forWatson this year, the first game for
Dak this year. It's the firstgame for Tom Brady this year. Is
that in Dallas? It's in Cleveland. If the Cowboys are owing one and
they lost at Cleveland, the sky'sgonna be falling. It's gonna happen,
all right. We got one moresegment to go here on a Wednesday edition
(01:26:01):
of the eight Team Sports Talk sevenninety. Where's your testosterone level at?
Does it feel like you're, youknow, ride and high like your the
Texans and their young stud quarterback ordoes it feel like you got a lot
of doubt in your mind like theother team in Texas. Well, you
don't want to be like that. You definitely don't want to have any sort
of doubts in your mind. Youwant to have that testosterone level where it
(01:26:23):
needs to be. And the onlyplace you can guarantee that is at Men's
Tea Clinic where they are celebrating theirtenth anniversary this year, and you want
to take advantage of everything they haveto offer and they've been offering for a
long long time. You get thesimple blood test done right there on site
at one of their five Houston arealocations, all of which are convenient.
(01:26:44):
I'll be at the Heights location tomorrow, but they also have one in Cyprus,
Pairland, Pasadena, and or Spring. Flexible appointment times, cash and
insurance options are available at all five, making it easy for you to get
in, get out, and getback to being you. But you get
that simple blood test done so youfind out if low testosterone is indeed what's
ailing you. You'll get your resultsback the same day, and if you
(01:27:06):
do have low testosterone, they're gonnago about optimizing an individualized treatment plan for
you to get you back to beingyou, the old you, the one
that you love, everyone else aroundyou loves and the one the best version
of yourself that you can be.It's Men's Tea Clinic and their website Men'stclinic
dot Com. Visit men'st Clinic dotcom. Today continues congratulations by the way
(01:27:33):
to our ticket winner Sean. Hopefullyhe enjoys Jane's addiction and love and rockets.
We'll have more later on in theweek, but he knew. Georgia
defensive Backamari Lasser was today's Texans SwarmPlayer of the Day. I believe that
award will carry over into their trainingcamp practices unofficially and not one hundred percent.
(01:27:57):
July eighteenth or nineteenth, that shouldbe day one of Texas training camp
this year, as we've mentioned acouple of times, be a little bit
earlier than they would normally begin thereget together for the upcoming season because they
have four preseason games. They arethe first team to play in the preseason
with the Bears game in Canton. There'll be a multiple day trip to Canton,
Ohio for the team. Andre Johnsongoing into the Hall of Fame.
(01:28:19):
There will be a whole bunch ofstuff tied to that. Activities and events
that fans who are also planning theirtrip up to Canton, Ohio for that
can be a part of and certainlythe event itself, where Aus Shucks will
be introducing Andre Johnson to the worldas a new Hall of Famer. Gary
Kubiak, the team and Andre announcedthat yesterday. By the way, do
(01:28:41):
they do prop bets for Hall ofFame speeches, They have to right time,
no crying or well, I meanthere's specific words in this case,
yes, that dang, but goodthe national wage setters, the national line
setter, if they knew Kubia,I don't, so no over under on
(01:29:02):
how many dangs you get in thatspeech. I'm four and a half.
First of all, I'm super impressed. It would have taken me a long
time to come up with the wordthat we needed to wager on. That's
it got a first try. That'snot even well, but that's because I
went to every press conference now too. I just that you're right. I
think that I don't know how longGary talks, so how many times you
(01:29:26):
said the number, but it's probablypretty lost. That's on me. Was
the only other real Oh my gosh, he said it again. If he
says that, here's why it probablytook Andre a lot longer to get into
the Hall of Fame for the votersto vote him in because I didn't call
enough plays for him in the redzone. That's on me, and he
(01:29:48):
never I didn't even have him onthe field for all the place. He's
never accomplished double digit touchdowns in hisTexans career and any season. That's on
me. Yep. It's rather that'swhy the Washington game was so awesome.
It's by far other than him beatingthe absolute crap out of Courtland in again.
(01:30:11):
You know my favorite Andrea Johnson gameof his career, you know,
the guy going into the Hall ofFame. It's the one he left early.
It was asked to leave early. That was my favorite game. I
mean, it wasn't even all thatproductive that day. It wasn't even a
great day for him catching the balland scoring points. He just for whatever
reason, he had to leave early. I love that game. I mean,
seriously, you have a choice, you only get one choice, and
you only get two Well, youcan only make one choice and you only
(01:30:31):
get two options. It's a framedautographed Andre Johnson picture. Is it him
violently spiking the ball to the pointwhere people were making Muhammad Ali memes with
the pos in Washington when they beatthe then Redskins, Or is it the
(01:30:53):
freeze frame of him about to knockCourtland in again into next week on the
field that then Rely Stadium. I'mgonna do you one better, and I
hate that it makes me think.I hate that, it makes me think
of it gets by Buckner and theMets win it. But a signed photo
of that play by both Bill andMookie, if you can get me the
(01:31:15):
Andre Johnson beating up Courtland Finnegan framedphoto with signatures from both Andre Johnson and
Courtland Finnegan. I'll take that. That means you had to actually find a
way to be able to and thenapproach Cortland and ask him to sign a
picture of him getting his ass beatenon national television Deer Titans Community Relations Comma
my name is? I mean, seriously, he'd probably do it because honestly,
(01:31:42):
what's he doing with his life thesedays? Now you've seen I don't
know if you've seen it because you'renot as much of a TikToker and a
real watcher like myself. But themost popular merchandising group that works with all
the teams in leagues fanatics. Theyput up a bunch of reels of players
going through like a mass signing, and the helpers are just like putting here's
(01:32:03):
twenty hats, here's twenty cards. But they'll stick in something that they really
should not be signing, like ChristianMcCaffrey is signing a bunch of Niners hats,
and they'll stick in a cow hatand see if the Stanford player wants
will sign it without saying anything, and they'll do that. They've put a
bunch of videos up and they almostnever sign it. They tossed it aside
and say you're not getting me tosign that. That's how you could probably
(01:32:25):
get it done with Courtland. Havehim signed some thirty one jerseys, have
him sign a brand new awesome Titansthrowback jersey that he never wore, and
then slide in a picture of AndreJohnson beating him up. See if he
signs it at Cortland Finnegan on Instagram, where he has posted one hundred and
sixteen times, has nineteen point seventhousand followers and is following just to tick
(01:32:49):
under three thousand people. His bioreads followers are low accounts are high wine
by the glass. I'm a cheapski though, and cheapskate is capitalized for
some reason. His last post, which well, I guess it's his pinned
post. He's skydiving, which isactually less risky than getting in a fight
(01:33:13):
with Andre Johnson if you're him anyway. I mean, that's what he's known
for. Literally, I googled him. You know what it says. People
also search for who's the first nameand face? You see the guy who
beat his ass on national television. That's what he's known for. Yes,
andres going into the Hall of Fame. If Andre was a total g he
would invite Courtland and make him sitfront row. Don't you remember the locker
(01:33:38):
room with Kubiak and Andre after thatgame? While I'm standing right behind him,
he apologized. He's saying all ofthe right things. He's being the
most Andrea johnsonist he's ever been,And I'm like thinking, I almost said
something to him. I almost waslike, dude, No, everybody in
that stadium loved you for that.Everybody in the NFL loved you for that.
(01:33:58):
Every other Marquee wide receiver that's goneup against that jackass. I think
you're their hero right now. Icouldn't believe it, but yet I could
because that's who he is, Soyeah, it's gonna be. I want,
by the way, does that comeup in his speech. That'd be
awesome, I bet you. Imean, because of the way he is,
you know, talking about good times, bad times, memorable times,
the road to hear he might acknowledgethat it took place. I see that
(01:34:20):
happened. A lot of people thinkthat that was pretty cool when I beat
the crap out of that guy.Probably won't sound like that. I mean,
that's the worst Andre Johnson that it'sawful, A little, a little
quicker than you need to be workingup between now and the actual induction.
I took a picture with him atthe Jersey reveal party and it just blew
up. People love that guy, they do. I was like, hmm,
(01:34:42):
I gotta get this picture. AndI don't usually do that with athletes,
but that was one because you neverknow when you're gonna be in that
kind of setting again. He's gota shout out Chris Spyers too. He's
oh why because he became the bouncerin that scenario. He came over and
grabbed again and kind of drug himaway until another Titans Pie. I'm gonna
say this with absolute certainty. Nobodyremembers that except for maybe Chris Myers and
(01:35:04):
Dan. Oh yeah, Dan,Dan remembers that. That's true. Dan
does remember that. I strong evidenceto support that theory that Dan remembers it.
