(00:00):
Glad you guys are all here.As you guys know, we released uh
Jose Braho today and uh, youknow, I'll take any questions that you
guys might have for me a littlebit about the timeline of you know what
when you guys decided that this wasthe necessary stuff. Yeah, I mean
we've been talking about it over thelast week or so, and you know,
(00:22):
ultimately, you know, a braywho is an outstanding human being.
He's had an outstanding career, andso you know, we tried different things
to get them going, you know, like sending them down, and so
as we talked through the process, you know, this week, we felt
like it was time to make achange. Yeah. I mean, ultimately,
(00:47):
you know, when when when guyslose their timing, you look for
them to go down and to regaintheir timing and to get on time with
the baseball, to have quality atbats and things like that, and you
know, we just didn't see it. We didn't see that there was a
change any at bats, and wefelt like, look, it was probably
time to make a change. Wellno, I mean I led this thing
(01:11):
myself, you know, ultimately,as a GM, I always talked to
my owner in terms of you know, giving him my thought process, and
you know I talked to Gym,but I pretty much led the process.
Yeah, very difficult. I mean, make no mistake about it. It
was very difficult. But you know, ultimately, you know, throughout this
(01:37):
game of baseball, we all makea lot of deals, right, and
you know, we hope that thesedeals will work, and they don't all
work out, you know, andsometimes you have to try to make adjustments
to get them to work out, like sending a guy down and doing different
things, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But it's difficult when
it doesn't work out. But ultimately, they've made a lot of decisions in
(02:00):
here here in Houston. You know, Jim has made a lot of good
decisions as well before I even gothere. So you know, it's always
tough when the deal doesn't work out. But it just didn't work out this
time. Yeah, we talked tohim this afternoon. I thought he took
(02:21):
it well. I think one ofthe things you have to understand about major
League baseball players, these guys areall good because they're critical. They judged
themselves before any of us judge them. And so you know, he was
critical as to how he was playinghimself, and so he understood what his
struggles were. You know, hestruggled a lot, and he was trying
(02:43):
to battle through it. That wasone of the reasons why he allowed us
to send him down for three weeks. And so it was a difficult thing
for him. But I thought hehandled it well. We sat down,
we talked about it. You know, we laid out like, look,
we tried everything. It wasn't becauseyou didn't work to tell all off,
you worked your butt off to getback. You lost your time and you
couldn't find it, and you dideverything we asked you to do. It
(03:07):
just didn't work out this time.I mean, right now, John Singleton's
gonna get most of the playing time. We're probably gonna maybe platoon when there's
the when there's a left hand pitcher, you know, it's gonna be Joe's
call as to you know, whowe would put there. I could see
some scenario of Dubond playing there, you know, in certain some games.
(03:30):
But for the most part, JohnSingles was gonna get most of their bats.
I mean, look, ultimately,John Singleton, if he could step
up now he's getting some playing time. Let's say, if he grabs the
bull bott horn and he takes off. You know, we don't have to
address that at first base. Youknow, I would like to get a
(03:51):
bat anyway if we could, ifit makes sense for the organization, if
we don't have to, you know, mortgage the farm, it'd be nice.
And as and as far as thetrade deadline, you guys know,
I'm always in the market of pitching. If there's an opportunity to get a
pitcher, we'll do that as well. Yeah, I don't think it was
(04:21):
a I mean, we ultimately hada timeline at some point, we just
didn't know when it was. Imean a big part of this is when
you set a timeline, you say, look, we want to see better
at bats, and those better atbats should come in this period of time.
And so we got to the timelineand we were like, look,
(04:42):
the bats are not better. Theguy's grinding. It's not like he's not
shown up for extra work. He'sdoing extra batting practice. And so,
you know, we got to thepoint where we figured, look, we
have to make a change. Youknow, we're twenty seven days right prior
to the deadline. You know,we're like twelve games away from being halfway
through the season, and so rightnow we felt like, look, we
(05:04):
got to really turn this thing aroundnow. I mean, we'll do what
we have to do to try tomake this thing work. We want to
get back to the postseason. Ultimately, we want to win the division.
(05:26):
You know, we have, youknow, debt money in baseball. You
know, it's just part of howit works. I mean, you're you're
banking on human beings, and sometimesthese human beings, you know, they
take a fall, you know, and so we have debt money all over
baseball. We just at this point, we know we still have to keep
moving forward, and if we getan opportunity, you know, to make
(05:47):
some type of adjustment or add something, you know, we'll try to do
it. We can't let this holdthis back. You know. It's just
it goes with the territory. Isthat nobody bats a thousand in player positions,
and so some of them, someof them are gonna work, some
of them are not gonna work.So you're gonna end up with dead money
at some point particular. Going forward, Uh, I mean, well we
(06:16):
we we're gonna give Singleton most ofthe playing time. I mean hopeful,
hopefully that hard line leads us tosome good at bats, a high ops,
some balls in the seats and thatkind of thing. But he's gonna
get an opportunity to play. Andif you call that opportunity a hard line,
uh then yeah. But ultimately he'sprobably not gonna play much against lefties,
(06:40):
so we're gonna plat tune that out. But he's gonna get most of
the playing time. He's gonna getan opportunity to show it's what he can
do. And you know, hopefullyyou know, we're not back here in
a month and a half looking fora first basement. We hope Singleton could
be the answer. Yeah, Imentioned earlier, maybe Dubond will get it
(07:00):
in there, you know, Uh, we can you know, we're looking
at rosters things right now. Whowe can call up, what adjustments we
can make uh there, So youknow, we we have internal options that
we're gonna give opportunities. So we'llsee what I mean Singleton, As you
(07:20):
guys all know, he's as goodat bats. You know, he swings
his strikes. You know, he'llwork his walks. Uh, you know,
he can hit balls into the seats. Hopefully the more he plays,
the more production we can get outof him. But we're gonna gi him
an opportunity and you know, hopefullyhe can, you know, like as
I mentioned, grab the bull bythe horn and really take off with this
(07:42):
this opportunity. I think he's gotthe talent and he's capable. Everything he's
done, and yeah, I don'tknow if this is the end. You
know, last year Pooh Hoosc gotreleased and he ended up with the Cardinals,
(08:03):
and you know, he did apretty good job there. But as
far as his legacy in the game, I mean, the guy was an
MVP. That's very hard to doin the major leagues. And so you
know when when you guys signed himprior to me getting here, I think
this guy was on the market. There were a lot of teams that liked
him, and so ultimately, youknow, first baseman with he had close
(08:26):
to an eight fifty ops for hiscareer, and so you know, he
had a good run. He hada really good run. Signed in international,
uh you know, the international signing, and so I had nothing but
good things to say about him.I thought he was very graceful, he
handled it well. He understood Imean, he understands baseball, and he
(08:46):
understands that he wasn't producing and thathe ran out of time. But he's
but as far as his career,he had a really good career, a
very impressive career. No, Imean it wasn't just it didn't come down
(09:11):
and just won at bad you know. I mean we we have been given
Jose a lot of opportunities to play, and even when he came back,
we were given them most of theopportunities to play. And even when we
sent them down, uh, wewe gave him more opportunities to get it
right. And so I don't thinkit comes down to one at bat,
one series. It's just one ofthose things. As a hitter, you
(09:33):
lose your timing, it's tough toget back and you know, and these
things happened to the latter part ofuh the careers of certain players. So
you know, I don't think itwas one at bat. You guys want
(09:56):
well, I mean, low Perfido. We're hoping that he can adjust to
playing first base. But right nowSingleton's gonna get their bats. At some
point, you will see Loperfido backup here as soon as you know.
Probably the twenty first is when hecan come back. Uh, so you'll
you'll see him back up here. There is a chance we give him some
opportunities at first base, depending onhow well Singleton's playing, depending on how
(10:20):
well McCormick's playing in the outfield. So there'll be summ at bats for him
somewhere here. But I'm not gonnasay that Loperfido is gonna come and you
know a rookie player is gonna beto savior for first base for us.
I mean, he may get someopportunities, but I would say Singleton's gonna
get most of the play at leastinitially till we find out what he can
(10:41):
do. Trade Tal, yeah,I mean we have pictures that are really
good in the minor leagues. Imean that you know we could trade if
we decide to trade. I don'twant to trade pitchers. I think you
know, you have to have pitching, pitching, pitching pitching. You need
(11:03):
the pitching depth to get through seasons. It's a long season. So ultimately,
you know, we'll have some piecesto move if we decide to move
them. I just don't want toget into what we're going to do with
the trade deadline because we still havetime. You know, we still have
time to make some adjustments. Uh, we have time to climb back in
(11:24):
it. You know, I justthink this is a really good ball club.
I was mentioning earlier that I've neverbeen a part of a club that
was good that end up becoming sellers. You know, the clubs that I've
been with that became sellers were notgood clubs. This is a good club.
We think good things are going tohappen. I know that these guys
(11:45):
are really good. I mean, these guys have really performed a lot.
I mean, seven straight CSS.I mean, I don't know what more
I can say about the grit thatwe have in that clubhouse and the good
the good players that we have. This is a good group of guys that
will turn it around and at somepoint I think they're gonna do it.
(12:07):
Teams system, yeah, I don'tthink we have needs to where we have
to clear out the farm system. You know. I think, you know,
we can get another arm great. You know, we can get a
back great, But to clear outyour farm system for those two guys.
I don't think anyone's trading you abig time player. You know, maybe
(12:28):
they will, but it may bea rental that you may not want to
waste prospects on you know, evenlast year when we did JV, we
gave up two pretty good players, but we felt like, look, we
were getting JV for the rest ofyou know, twenty three, and we
had them for all of twenty fourwith the potential of him to be around
for twenty five, so that mademore sense. Ultimately, we don't want
(12:50):
to give away a bunch of prospectsfor rentals. And I think that could
come back to haunt yous. Yeah, I mean, I don't think there's
like a teaching moment here. Ithink the deal here is ultimately you were
(13:13):
looking at Hoseaiah Brady when he wassigned before I got here, he had
really good numbers. There were alot of teams that were in the market,
uh for first base, and soyou know, as I mentioned earlier
a L I mean, a lotof these deals work out and and and
and you know, Houston's did goodthings before I got here. So I
mean, I can't come in hereand start being critical towards the Houston Astrals.
(13:37):
Houston Nationals has been a s successfulorganization and to try to pick them
apart, I mean it would belike you know, throwing rocks from a
a glasshouse. So I would saythat, you know what, there's some
uh, there's some deals that work. There's other deals that don't work.
And when a team has consistently beena part of winning, I think to
(14:00):
pick them apart for one bad signor two bad signs, it's like it's
not a good precedent to set.I think ultimately, uh, you know,
you can't be gun shy. Youhave to be aggressive. You have
to go out and get players knowingthat sometimes they're gonna it's gonna work out
and sometimes it's not gonna work out. Yeah, yes, Yeah, Cooper
(14:30):
Hummels, he's having success, youknow, and so ultimately he's having quality
at bats. And I think that'sone of the things that I've been preaching
to our staff. Look, oneway to get the guys going with the
bats is to have quality at bats. One thing Cooper Humo's gonna do is
he's gonna have quality at bats. And I think the difference between a team
(14:52):
that's on a row and a teamthat's not on a row, it's a
couple of things. It's one,you have to have quality at bats,
and two you have to make picturesas as a pitcher when you have to.
And I think when we can startto do that with some consistency,
this team will get on a rollableI mean, ultimately, that's what UH
(15:28):
is going to look like. Youknow, we signed him for a long
term deal, He's going to getolder and agent to that contract the same
way. I think Al two isa pillar in this organization. I think
he's going to be outstanding. AsI mentioned before, some of these signs
will work, some of them willnot work. I won't I'm I'm not
the type of guy that's going tobe in the habit of signing a lot
(15:50):
of older guys. I think sometimesyou have to sign older guys, particularly
when you have an opening and youhave to you know, plug that opening.
Uh, you know, you mayhave to do it, and you
know, I think the older theyget, you should try to go less
years. But ultimately, you know, I think a guy like Altuve's gonna
(16:10):
be one of those guys that's older. But I think I think he'll age
through his contract very well. Ithink he's a hell of a player.
I mean, yeah, I mean, both those guys are really good players.
I don't know how it's gonna workout contract wise, but I mean
Tucker is probably gonna get a youknow, a bit a long deal with
(16:30):
his age. At some point, you know, hopefully we'll, you know,
we we're going to try to makea run at Tucker. I don't
know if it's going to age untilthirty eight or not, but I'm sure
the agents are probably gonna be lookingfor something like that. But ultimately,
you know, when it comes toTucker, when it comes to Bregman,
(16:51):
I mean, those those are conversationsthat we'll have down the line. But
you know, I don't like tothink about signing players into their thirty eight,
thirty nine, forty years old.Uh. Some of them work out,
some of them don't.
