(00:01):
You look at it. Oh yeah, this is radio and you listen to
it on Sports Talk seven Astro isbroadcaster Jeff Blum on seven ninety is brought
to you by low T Center,And just like that, we're back at
it again. We are here liveat Gallery Furniture, and by we,

(00:24):
I mean myself and Brian Lolima ofThe Sean Salisbury Show. And then,
of course you just heard the intro. Blummer is on with us. He's
not even in the country right now, you know, weam He's on vacation
in Vegas. But at least he'sin the continental United States, although I
guess technically continental applies here, butyeah, in Toronto, that is where
Blummer is standing by awaiting the startof game three of this four game set.

(00:47):
The team's already split it. Butthe most important question, Blum,
is how are things north of theborder up there? What's up yours?
Yeah, other than we're getting spoiled, I bet well. I saw the
weather for the opener, and thenof course, you know last night,

(01:08):
a little bit later in the day. But yeah, you can't complain about
those kinds of temperatures in July becausedown here we're like peeling our shirts off
and changing them just after walking infrom the car. But man, a
comeback attempt that fell just short, and it was looking pretty rough there for
a minute, and then all ofa sudden, you know, Jordon does
Jordon things, and you think maybethe Astros are going to do it again.

(01:30):
It's actually more disappointing at this pointwhen the Astros lose, given what
they've been able to do, andof course what the Mariners have been doing,
which is circling the toilet. Yeah, they brought into some stiff competition
and they have not performed well againstthose teams. And you know, we
all talked about it that starting inthat month of June, with the days

(01:51):
off, the competition that they weregoing to have, if the Astros are
going to make a run, itwas going to be in that month of
June. And they made the run. We just had no idea it was
going to be without Kyle Tucker. So amazingly enough, I looked it up
in the last twelve games, theAstros averaging six and a half runs.
If they would have gotten to thatpoint last night, they would have tied
that ball game up and maybe stillbe playing. But at the same time,

(02:12):
it's still impressive to me that thisoffense can go out and do what
they're able to do. Jeremy Pannawith a couple of big hits the last
couple of days. But I'm infull favor of walking around here and tearing
down the Rogers Center signs and puttingthe Jordan Center because he absolutely obliterates his
place at the Toronto pitching. Imean, it's amazing how quickly he can
make a place this big look thatsmall. Jeff, you mentioned Kyle Tucker

(02:38):
not being in this lineup over thelast sixteen games. The Astros are twelve
and four, and we spoke withgeneral manager Dana Brown this morning on our
show on The Sewn Salisbury Show, and he mentioned that he's still not really
doing baseball activities. And in myopinion, and again this is my opinion,
I think it's a little more thana deep bone bruise off the foul

(02:58):
ball off of his shin. Doyou think it could be more than just
a bone bruise and we're just nothearing about it? Or is it just
something that got so swollen that it'staken this long for him to come back.
Yeah, you know what it couldbe. It could be several things.
I mean, I'm not sure, you know, having solved several thousand
baseballs off my shin, Fortunately Inever got to the point where it created,

(03:20):
you know, the swelling that itdid for for Kyle Tucker. And
we all know that everybody, everyliterally every body is different and how it
reacts to pain is going to bea little bit different. But what sometimes
when it's a severe pain like hegot, like he created by filling that
ball off the shin, I thinkhis body reacted to protect that area.
Now to what extent that injury is, we may never know, or he

(03:42):
may come out later and say thathe, you know, something happened that
we didn't know about. But youknow, it's great that the team is
playing well and it's great that they'reaffording the opportunity for him to get right
because Kyle Tucker's one of those uniqueguys where he's not one dimension. You
know, there's several dimensions to whatKyle is able to go out there and
do, and well he's able toget on those legs, We're not going
to see him for a very longtime, and unfortunately it's taken a long

(04:04):
time for the bruise. You goaway. It's taken a long time for
the swelling to get out of there, but I think a lot of it
is too to make sure that he'sone hundred percent before he goes out there,
and hopefully the Atros can continue toproduce until he does come back,
because once he does come back,it's amazing to think that this offense could
actually and the defense could actually getthat much better. No, you're right,

(04:25):
it's like getting an additional player ora few in this case, because
you're talking about Justin Verlander and youbasically just have to, you know,
relegate and resign yourself to the factthat you're going to be looking forward to
the post All Star Break portion ofthe calendar because that will include at some
point both Tucker and Justin Verlander. And then you know, Luis Garcia about

(04:46):
to do his second rehab start.Lance mccullor is a little bit behind him.
I mean, the names that we'vebeen tossing around for a long time
before these two went on the shelf, but the fact that the Astros are
able to play this way through it. I mean, you were talking about,
you know, Tucker's injury specifically onthe broadcast yesterday or the day before
I can't remember which day it waswhere that swelling actually went up to his

(05:09):
knee. And I'm with I'm like, what kind of bone bruise takes you
out? You know, the amountof time for a broken leg, But
if it went up his leg andyou never know what's going to happen and
got involved in the knee, Icould see why he's still dealing with the
limp that you guys were talking aboutjust a few days ago. Yeah,
and we're we only know what's givento us, right, you know.

(05:30):
And I mean you get around Kyleand he's not gonna you know, he's
trying to protect himself. He's tryingto protect this team. And I'm not
trying to blow you know, Limaor you off. I just literally don't
know because we in our experience withthis organization in the last seven to ten
years, they've been very you know, secretive about injuries. And I'm you
know, whether it's trying to youknow, protect the player from the media

(05:53):
like us, or if it's tryingto protect the ball club against the opposing
team, I don't know what itis. But for whatever reason, we
don't always get the information that wewant. Sometimes we find out a little
bit later on, after the player'sback and they have that honest conversation,
they say, well, actually thishappened or it was something else. So,
you know, I wish I couldgive you guys more, But I
agree with you in the sense forKyle Tucker to not, considering the year

(06:15):
he was having, you think thathe would be on the field as quick
as he possibly could because he wasswinging the bat so well. So that's
what kind of indicates to me aswell, that there was something a little
more drastic than maybe just the initialthought that, hey, I follow about
my shin. There's a little bitof a bruise. I'm going to go
on a ten day, we'll figureit out. But it's obviously been much
more extended. So who knows.Maybe when he does come back and he
finally opens up about what's going on, we'll get a little more information.

(06:38):
But I'm honest to God, haveno idea, you know, to what
extent the pain actually was other thanthe fact that he, you know,
still a little bit of a limpbut he walks. Yeah. Well,
I just know from like, likeyou said, obviously I didn't play in
the big leagues, but playing incollege. I found quite a few balls
off my shin. It's one ofthe most painful things ever. I just
find it very odd that he isstill not back from just a quote unquote

(07:00):
bone bruise. But hopefully he getsback going. Obviously after the All Star
break, I want to go backto last night real quick with you.
Top of the ninth inning, JeremyPeni a lead off double, Joey Loperfidal
comes up to bat. At somepoint, Joey Loperfidal has to at least
put the ball in play, getthe guy over to third base, and
then you take your chances with eitherSalazar or Cabbage. If Joe's Bottle would
have pinch hit for him or not, it would have been maybe a little

(07:23):
bit different with Painty at third andthen al two va obviously, but I
just want to get your take onthe pinch hit for Cabbage coming in for
Salazar, when Salazar, in thesmall sample sizes, really put some good
at bats together. I just thoughtit was a little bit a little bit
peculiar because in the post game hesaid, well, you know, I

(07:43):
was gonna take my chances with Cabbagebecause he could have hit a two run
shot. He could have got afastball, barreled it up and got it
out of the ballpark rather than youknow, if lowper Fiuidal gets it lower
Fidal gets his job done, thenit's a completely different situation. But I
just thought the pinch hit was justa little bit peculiar in my opinion.
Yeah, I think it was amatter of a you know, a new
coach going with a veteran in thatsituation, considering the leverage of the situation.

(08:09):
Because I agree with you Saysar Salazarhas gone above and beyond I think
anything that we may have anticipated withhim, because I think you know,
of the what six or seven hitshe's gotten, he's gotten with five of
them with guys in scoring position. And what was kind of unique about that
situation, Well, I'll get tothe Joey Loperfido at bat, but just
given the situation, all it wastaking was was a base hit to score.

(08:31):
Jeremy Paine, the dude could flatfly, so anything to the outfield
he was going to score and tiethat game up. And that's where I
think you're kind of coming from. And the fact that Saysar Salazar is not
that powered threat in the sense thathe's going to go out there and just
try and step on one and putthe Astros ahead. He's not going for
the glory. He's going for theglory of trying to tie that thing up
and then pass the baton the guylike Josel Tube. So I can understand

(08:54):
that argument and respect that because SaysarSalazar has been putting the barrel to the
baseball. He's been putting together somegreat at bats. You had Chad Green
on the mound, who's filling infor Jason Romano as far as the closer.
So Chad Green is a guy thatthrows eighty percent fastballs two left handed
hitters, and you might, youmight, at this given moment for a

(09:15):
guy who's already got a base itwith in an RBI in the game,
think about leaving him in because you'renot looking for that gap shot, you're
not looking for that home run. You're looking to tie this game up and
extend that ball game. But atthe same time, I also respect the
fact that you know he's going togive Trey Cabot a shot because it was
just a couple of days agoing NewYork. You know he's raking the ball
to the wall, driving in tworuns. He's hitting the ball incredibly hard

(09:35):
since he's been an Astro, soI kind of get the idea, but
it felt like it was more moregoing for the win than he was going
for that basit to tie it up. But just to go back to the
Joey Loper Fido at bat too.I know you're young, I know they're
swinging missing that game, but atthe same time, the pitcher on the
mount throws eighty percent fastballs. You'vegot to find a way to pull that

(09:56):
ball on the ground and move thatrunner to the third. Therefore, you
can give your team a couple moreopportunities to go out there and tie that
game up. I have no analyticssay swing the bat, but when you're
in a tight ball game and you'rescratching for wins, even though the Astros
are above five hundred now, you'restill scratching for wins and you need to
win games. I think that wasthat you've got to play a little bit

(10:18):
of small ball, especially from youryoung players. Well, and this is
real baseball analysis right here as well. Chad Green's stupid face reminds me of
when he was pitching for the Yankees, So it is even worse. Yes,
and I'm very angry about that, because man, pay you on second
nobody out, you got it,you've got You've got to at least tie

(10:39):
the game, at minimum. Andit was pretty frustrating, just a just
a non competitive bat in there.And I get it, it's it's hard
to hit a baseball. This justdidn't But you're right, I mean,
and there was nothing fancy about it. He was doing what he does,
but the Astros just couldn't, uhcouldn't complete the comeback. Part of that's
not getting in the hole to beginwith. And by the way, don't

(11:01):
tell me it didn't hurt a littlebit to know that George Springer is a
big reason why you were in thathole to begin with. Yeah, you
know, it was so interesting tolook at George's numbers because the Astros have
actually handled him pretty well with afew hits and he's gotten the gone out
of the ballpark. And of course, you know those revenge AB's, we
talk about them all the time.I don't know how revengeful they are,
but it's just kind of a phrasethat we use when you face your old

(11:22):
team. Because George is we understoodwhat kind of menace. He was in
the Astros uniform. Now unfortunately wehave to see it in the opposing uniform.
It's Jeff Blum. He is,of course, the color analyst for
Space City Home Network, and hejoins us each and every week here on
the eight team Sports Talk seven ninetyand Blumber. We like to talk about
the fact that Exfinity is where it'sat when it comes to streaming, when

(11:46):
it comes to Wi Fi, that'sreliable connection, everything that we've been telling
you about for a long time. You and I are both beneficiaries of what
Exfinity brings to the table. Theytruly are showing you what it means when
they say X marks the spot.Yeah, they've been fantastic. The wall
to wall Wi Fi is really interestingto me because you know here in Texas

(12:07):
where I have the ability to havea little bit larger homes and you need
some coverage outside even if you ventureout there during the summer and sweat it
out. But I get connections allover my house. And it's kind of
nice too, because there are somany people in my house that I do
like to get away from them alittle bit, as much as I love
them, and even when I do. I still have the ability to download
to stream, and I'll do thatquite frequently before I go on the road

(12:28):
too. I'll be studying for thegame, and behind the scenes, I'm
downloading and trying to stream, youknow, movies and binge some TV shows
while I'm on the road. SoI'm grateful that wallde Wall by Exfinity is
in my house. Yeah, thatis no doubt about it, especially when
you have this time of year wheremore people are in the house more often

(12:48):
than not. And don't forget that. Now through September twenty first, you
can get one hundred and fifty megabitExfinity Internet for twelve months with a one
year contract and for just fifteen dollarsa month. Add the new stream Saver,
then include Peacock, Apple TV Plusand Netflix, Exfinity Internet and stream
Saver for just thirty five dollars amonth, all your favorites all in one
place only from Exfinity for more watchingand less spending. X marks the spot.

(13:13):
Switch to Exfinity, the network madefor streaming and bring on the good
stuff, And you can do soone of three ways by going to Exfinity
dot com calling one eight hundred Infinityor visiting a store today. Exfinity proud
sponsor of your Houston Astros. There'sa space City Home Networks, Todd Kallis,
there's the A Team. You gothim. It's Adam Clinton and Adam

(13:37):
Wesler. Clinton, stop impersonating meon Sports Talk seven ninety. Hey,
we're back at it with the ATeam and Blummer here on Sports Talk seven
ninety. Hey, Blum, Ijust I just have to do that every
time you're on with us, unYeah, you got it talks I do?
Yeah, you a TK every morning? Wait every morning? Sorry,

(13:58):
go ahea blump. No, Ijust love it. No, it's it's
spot on and it's a little tricky. Yeah, it's it's hard for me
to actually say I like it whenI'm in love with the actual peak.
Well so so so the Lima hasone, apparently in his repertoire. I
think we're about to hear it.Oh yeah, so every morning, you

(14:20):
know, Sean Salisbury always gets meto do it, and you know I
shouldn't. I love Todd Cals, but what is it? Imitation is sincereous
form of Flattery's great. So I'lljust you know, be cruising on in
a segment and then he'll say,oh wait, who was that about,
And I'll say that was Jose Altuve. It's coming up to the plate.
That's a deep fly ball to rightfield. Blummer. He's going to catch
it on the wall. It's goingto bring up Joey Loperfido should be terrible,

(14:48):
but terribly good. He's catching straysin Canada right now. He doesn't
even know it. It's just terrible. That's a ground out to the left.
Oh my gosh. Well, okay, let's talk about I know,
right, I agree with you.Let's talk about the fact that, in

(15:09):
you know, full disclosure, sometimesduring games, I'll send you a text
or ten and I'm telling you theother night and I'm cleaning this up for
air consumption, how much I reallyreally enjoy watching Hunter Brown pitch. And
I know you feel the same way. I really do. And it's been

(15:31):
fantastic, And he's started to developa little bit of that edge and you
know the nickname that's come out ofthe clubhouse of the Diesel. I absolutely
loved, you know, being akid from Motor City and now pitching with
the fuel that he has in hisright arm, and then pitching with just
a little extra anger behind it andhaving a little bit of that attitude has

(15:52):
really turned me on. And Idon't know who voted. I know I
voted for Player of the Month orPicture of the Month, And man,
why you even have the boat Ifyou're not going to consider a guy that
had five stars and goes four tozero, you know wins. You know
it basically has been the turnaround inthis rotation. He is one of the
better stories in all the game. And he's been doing it with a fastball.

(16:15):
He hasn't been doing it by tryingto trick anybody. He has just
overwhelmed the opposing competition. And Iknow that maybe the strikeout number isn't as
high as maybe Garrett Crochets, Butat the same time, I thought there
must be a qualification that we don'tknow about, because I do believe Hunter
Brown should have been Picture of theMonth. Sorry, you know, I

(16:37):
mean tell us how you really feel, man, You know Blum, you
know how I know that you're andyou're passionate about it. We got it,
we got it. We have agood back at the ranch. Fantastic.
I love that you're phenomenal. You'respeaking for every Astros fan when you
say that though, because we're alllike, okay, so wait, can
his July Yeah, if his Julyfirst star right, and if his July

(17:00):
first start is on the Ledger, then he there's no way he doesn't win
the award. But because the calendarflip, like give me a break,
Yeah, yeah, because there weren'tthirty one days in the month of June.
I mean, I know that Crochethad one more start, and like
you said, who's this it's frustrated. I don't. I don't understand it.
And it kind of blows a holein the idea of you know,

(17:25):
what qualifies you for being Pitcher ofthe Month. Is it going out there
and helping a team get back intoa pennant race, like the like Hunter
Brown is doing for his team,or is it just being a really good
picture on a crappy team now?I mean, you know, and the
goalposts seemed to move with these typesof awards, whether it be in season,

(17:45):
whether it be you know, postseasonawards. And this isn't just for
baseball. We already know, likethe shenanigans that go on and when you
have somebody like Ramona Shellbourne going onESPN and openly saying yeah, I vote
based on narratives for the MVP Awardin the NBA, Like, we know
that this kind of stuff is verysubjective, and that's what's that's what can
make it fun, but that's alsowhat can make it a little frustrating.

(18:07):
So if you're Hunter Brown, thething I love about him is he's gonna
use this as fuel. Speaking ofwhich, and if you don't believe me,
you can just go ahead and takea gander at his Instagram story today
where he posted the picture of MichaelJordan in the Last Dance saying, and
I took that personally, that's abeautiful thing. And that's the kind of
guy we want a rotation, Andthat's what's that is what is endearing us

(18:30):
to Hunter Brown. He's kind ofturned that corner with the stuff we knew
it was in there, and nowhe's kind of pitching with him. That's
that anger I'm talking about. That'sthat channeling of that of that desire or
overwhelming you know people on the onthe on the playing field. That's what
you love because you know that there'sa lot of guys. You get to
a point where you have the kindof stuff that can compete at the big

(18:52):
league level. But in order tobecome elite, you've got to have that
mentality of nobody can beat me,and that's where he's at right now.
And I love the fact that he'skind of channeling that Michael Jordan idea of
going out there and going you knowwhat. I Am going to take that
personally, because it does still personalwhen I go out there and put up
a one point one nine ERA andI helped propel my team and put them

(19:12):
in a position to go out thereand be the best team in the month
of June. It just doesn't makeany sense he should be rewarded for being
the leader in that rotation during thatmonth of June when the Astros have fought
back so hard to get above fivehundred to get back in the conversation,
A, Jeff, I want tostay with the Astros' pitching staff. And
from your perspective, obviously you've watchedfromber Valdez since he made his debut,

(19:34):
You've been in the booth for solong. Obviously you played the game for
a long time. So I wantto get it from a hitter's perspective.
If I was a hitter and I'mgoing into face fromber Valdez. I have
a good at bat against him inthe first time through the rotation, but
then I come into the second secondtime through and I see him get frustrated
a little bit. What does itdo as a hitter when you see him

(19:55):
try to make a bank bank playat home, throw down his glove,
have a little temper tantrum, andthen he's got to get back on them,
no man, visit, no nothing. What does that do to give
the hitter an advantage? Because I'mjust trying to get our listeners to understand
like the ups and downs of thementality of fromer Valdez. You know,
yeah, unfortunately, that's who heis. And you know what's kind of

(20:15):
interesting is that throughout the course ofthe season. You know, there's been
guys like this throughout the history ofthe game that have great stuff, But
all of a sudden, you geta little crack in the facade and all
of a sudden you start to seeinside and they get a little rattled.
But that's in a scouting report. That's in a scouting report. Before you
start the game, neilt sit thereas hitters, and you'll kind of be

(20:36):
sitting there and you're like let's takesome pitches to see if we can't make
this guy work and get them alittle frustrated. And even when a pitches
on the edge and the Empire doesn'tgive from for a call, you can
kind of see him snatch the ballback or smile or kind of giggle it
like, oh my, he didn'tgive me that. As a hitter,
you're kind of looking for an opening, and those sometimes are the openings.
But when you see him full onsnap like that, slam the glove,

(20:57):
then you're like, Okay, wegot them, and then you can go
out there and not have relaxed atbats, but you have a little more
intent pull at bats against guys likethat because you've opened them up, you've
exposed them a little bit, andnow you want to really just kind of
drive that point home and knock himout of the game because you see that
opening. And that's unfortunately where Fromershows a little too much emotion for me

(21:18):
at times, because the stuff isjust so dang good that, you know,
and he rides such a thin line. It's kind of interesting to me.
I would kind of hope that themore he matured, the more he'd
realized how good his stuff was andthat you know what, I gave up
the base hit. I made abad play, but you know what,
I'm a ground ball away from gettinga double plane getting out of this.
Because that's kind of who we loveabout fromber Valdez is and he can dive

(21:41):
up a broken bat base hit,he can walk to guys, be bases
loaded, nobody out, and allof a sudden he's a pop up in
a ground ball. He's out ofthe situation, where like, wow,
that's just Fromber because he has thatkind of stuff to get out of that
situation. But yeah, to yourpoint, as an opposing hitter, you
do understand. You know that there'scertain mentalities and you're looking for anything against
a guy like romber Valdez, andif he does give you a little bit

(22:03):
of that opening, you've got togo ahead and try and take it.
And in all, before we letyou go all this talk about all of
the pitching for the Astros, andwe haven't said a single word about the
best pitcher on the staff this season. And he goes tonight looking for a
bounce back, which is something wehaven't said a lot about Renel Blanco this
season. No, and that youknow It's interesting because you know, we'll

(22:29):
talk about, you know, HunterBrown a couple of seasons ago, talking
about innings, talking about this yearwith Spencer rag Getty, talking about innings
and trying to protect that arm.You need to remember, as as big
and as strong as Renel Blanco is, this is really his first season being
a full time starter. So Ithink, you know, there's gonna be
there's gonna be fatigue, There's gonnabe a little bit of a hiccup.

(22:49):
But I think his work ethic andhis stuff is going to minimize those maybe
slumps throughout the course of the season. But I know that, you know,
for him, it might just bea little bit of fatigue. And
it was kind of interesting to lookat that start against the New York Mets
for me getting ready for today's game, is that he was really heavy on
the slider for whatever reason against theNew York Mets. I'm not sure if
he was trying to get away fromthe change up because they might have been

(23:11):
sitting on it, or there weretoo many right handed hitters in the lineup,
but he threw a lot of slidersand the change up was elevated and
got hit out a couple of timeswe saw him giving up the home runs.
When you see guys start to giveup home runs and don't that tells
me that maybe some of these pitchesjust aren't finishing where they want them to
because there might be a little fatigue. But I think that Renault is going
to have a bounce back start. You've got to remember, I mean his

(23:33):
first start of the season was againsthis Blue Jays team, where he has
yet to give up a hit.Of these guys this year, it's going
to be in the back of themind Toronto blue Jays. It's also going
to be in the back of themind of Renel Blanco. So I think
that he's going to go out there, He's going to compete and just give
this offense enough time to put upyou know what they've been doing in the
last two or three weeks of sixand a half runs and everything'll be back

(23:55):
to normal with an ashers w.Well, we appreciate you joining each and
every week, Blummer. We appreciateyou doing so from another country. And
if you see Justin Trudeau, youknow, bumping around up there in Toronto,
just give him a kick in theshin for me. Tell him it's
from Adam Clanton and me as well. But also we appreciate the people who
make it possible each and every week, I go, okay, I can't

(24:19):
wait to run into Justin Trudeau. That would be really interesting to see him.
The astros color analysts just smok himright in the shin. But you
get it for good. I mightgo viral, no, but I appreciate
it. Guys. It's interesting.Usually when I'm on here with Lex,
I feel comfortable talking about some ofthe spongers and getting me on. But

(24:41):
now I got two kids, andyou know, talking to me on this
radio show, and I'm exposed myselfbecause Jeff witson Busion Group is where it's

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
